Trey Carter & Dwayne Orso – A Different Kind of Athlete

We’ve already done a post about Trey Carter on here. And we’ve sung his praises and what I originally intended to do when I started this post was to talk about Trey briefly and then move on to talking about Dwayne Orso (who I think is fantastic). But as I wrote about Trey I just couldn’t stop writing so I’m going to have to break this up into two posts. And to be honest Dwayne Orso deserves his own post. Just as a reminder Dwayne is OU’s most recent DL offer (Homewood, Alabama)

Let me tell you some things about Trey…

Trey Carter is a freak. It’s as simple as that. Trey is the hardest working kid you’ll come across. People close to Trey are actually concerned about Trey’s work ethic – not because he lacks one but because he works so hard as a high school student they’re concerned he isn’t enjoying his HS years. Trey doesn’t care about going to parties or “hanging out”. Trey wants to work. Trey wants to get better. Physically he is as impressive as any DLineman you will find in the country. Long muscular frame with PLENTY of room to add a lot of good weight. He’s got huge hands. He’s quick off the ball, runs well in space and NEVER and I mean NEVER quits. If the game is over and everyone, including the coaches are done, Trey is still going 100%. Trey is originally from Louisiana and his father played NG at LA Tech. He is a different kind of athlete. And I can tell you that he is at the top of Oklahoma’s board. Coach Montgomery saw Trey and didn’t hesitate to offer. Trey along with guys like Charles Walker are just the type of athletes on the DL that Oklahoma has not had in recent years. Trey is an NFL guy simple and plain. Barring any injuries and assuming his work habits continue, if Trey ends up at Oklahoma he will (God willing) flourish under Coach Montgomery’s watchful eye.

I’m not going to spend a lot of time explaining the recruiting game to y’all right now or explaining how bogus a lot the corporate recruit rankings are. I will simply tell you that Trey has been good for a while. This isn’t something new. He was a ball player back in Louisiana before he moved to Texas. There are a number of reasons people don’t initially get offers. One of those reasons is that coaches are human beings with the same uncertainties and insecurities that other human beings have. You know how a lot of guys will ask you if their girlfriend is cute? Why in the hell do they care what you think? They’ve got eyes! They care because most people aren’t always certain of themselves even if they can see it. They want assurance from others.

Trey camped at Arkansas and he camped at OSU (two schools not known for defense) – they did not offer. Trey camped at TCU (a school known for defense) – Coach Patterson saw him and asked him to do a very athletically challenging thing and Trey did it. Trey got his offer. No one else at the camp could do it and Coach Patterson knew exactly what he was looking at – an athletic freak. Good knows good. Coach Montgomery saw him – offered him on the spot. Good knows good. Well recently the offers started rolling in and guess who should offer? Oklahoma State and Arkansas. My guess is they didn’t need to see any more back at those camps in the summer. They just didn’t trust their eyes. And now that the offers have started rolling in the corporate recruiting websites will (or already have) magically decide that Trey isn’t a 2 star anymore and he will be (or already has been) bumped up to a 3 or 4 star. But Trey has been good. Real good.

As most of you saw in our update about Trey this week, Alabama has even begun to get in the picture. But I don’t care if Alabama likes him. I don’t care if TCU likes him. I don’t care that Miami offered him. I don’t even care that Oklahoma likes him. I like him. I trust my eyes and good knows good. And Trey Carter is flat out good. Oklahoma needs a freak like Trey Carter. Oklahoma needs a hard working kid like Trey Carter. Oklahoma needs a high ceiling kid like Trey Carter. If Oklahoma is going to take that next step on defense then Oklahoma needs young ball players like Trey Carter.
