That Just Happened! – A Flea Flicker? Seriously?

1st down 10; 13:00 in the 4th quarter

Coach Stoops read this chapter last night! This was the flea flicker TCU attempted but you can see Coach Bob Stoops on the side line yelling to his players to watch for it. We play this beautifully. TCU shows trips open gun strong with a running back flat motion. OU is running a cover 4 over the three trips receivers.

TCU’s #3 receiver goes deep on a vertical route and Shannon reroutes him carrying him to Hayes while Colvin is underneath/short. Colvin actually sees the receiver late so if TCU would have run a dig route or deep post the play might have had a chance. Both WR #1 and #2 are blocking for the running back who has swung out of the backfield. Running back receives the ball and is looking to throw.

Young Dom Alexander does a great job of reading the play and gets there first but misses the tackle. But never fear, Eric Striker is there to light the RB up!

Unfortunately, it was negated by a poor facemask call but I loved seeing Dom’s instincts and speed closing on the RB. And I loved seeing Striker continue to pursue after he’s chipped by the linemen. Hustle and good leverage on the ball is something we see time and time again with this defense and if not for, what looked like, a bad facemask call that hustle pays off in a big way.

I agree! The defense played this beautifully! What’s awesome about this year’s defense is the way everyone hustles to the ball like they used to when Stoops first got here. Now when the ball is handed off in the back field or on a bubble screen there are usually 2-3 defenders around the ball to make the play!

It will be interesting to see what impact Corey not playing will have on the defense…

786, yep you’re right! Lots of hustle this year. But it also helps that we are playing man coverage with two high safeties as much so that more people have run responsibilities. To your last point, we actually had the Corey Nelson question sent in yesterday so our take on that should be up 🙂
