Super K’s Recruiting Summary

We’ve been dropping recruiting information on y’all in various posts so we figured it would make things easier for readers if we periodically did a recruiting summary to bring some of it together in one convenient place:

Courtney Garnett (DL) – Courtney had a great visit this past weekend at Oklahoma. Perhaps more importantly, his mother loved the visit. The reason that is so important is because Oregon is trying to become a major player in Garnett’s recruitment. They were trying to get Courtney to come up this weekend and join other former Texas commit, Trey Lealaimatafao. I don’t know if the door is completely closed for him to visit next weekend but what I do know is his mother has said Oregon is too far away. Additionally, Courtney’s mother just seems comfortable and attached to Oklahoma and our coaches. Courtney said that his mother won’t stop talking about Oklahoma. A visit to Oregon could still happen but Mama is definitely in our corner right now. Additionally, Courtney himself loves OU and I got the impression the trip to Oregon would be more about the experience to Nike U than anything else.

Steven Parker (DB) – Steven Parker put out some tweets earlier this week that left some OU fans concerned. The tweets seemed to indicate that he may be rethinking things. The fact that the tweets went out on the same day as Texas A&M visited further added fuel to the fire. I haven’t had a chance to talk to Steven’s father since then. Last time we spoke was for a while last weekend and he said Steven loved the visit. Steven’s father and I shared some texts during the week but they were unrelated to football. I’m still optimistic about where OU stands but to settle any uneasiness, if I get some time I’ll try to rap with Steven’s father this coming weekend. But until I’m told differently, I’m still very optimistic about where OU stands.

Jordan Thomas (DB) – Oklahoma picked up a commitment from Jordan Thomas this past week. With that commitment it appears Oklahoma is finished with DB (other than Steven Parker of course).

Walter Brady (DL) – Got word from friends in Alabama that Oklahoma was actually talking to the coaches at Florence HS about a DL named Walter Brady. Unfortunately it appears Walter isn’t quite qualified yet. So it looks like Oklahoma’s pursuit there has been stifled as well. Coach Aiken from Oregon actually started to recruit Walter as well. It’s too bad because the young man is ridiculously athletic for his size (ran a 4.7 at the Mississippi State camp and measured in at around 6’4 242 lbs). He’s also a fantastic kid. Not sure if Oklahoma turns elsewhere for a DL backup plan or not.

Miciah Quick (ATH) – We’ve felt good about Miciah for a long time and nothing has changed on that front. The connection Oklahoma has with Quick through coach Perry, coach Viney, Hatari, LJ, etc. appears to just be too much for other schools to overcome. It’s not done till it’s done but from everything I’ve heard…this one seems as close to done as it can be without an actual commitment. But the more I’ve dealt with recruiting the more I’m becoming an “it’s done when it’s done” kind of guy.

Kenyon Frison and Lukayus McNeil (OTs) – It sounds like there were three Oklahoma coaches (Montgomery, Norvell and Bedenbaugh) in Utah earlier this week all at the same time. I asked 2015 OT, Andre James, if they were all there to see him and he said “no” so my guess is they were each there to see different people but something tells me that since Coach Montgomery was Frison’s initial recruiter perhaps they were all there to put the full court press on Frison. The word I got earlier in the week is that after Frison decommitted from Utah following his ASU visit, Oklahoma wasn’t feeling very confident. Frison is a high priority obviously. Frison will be visiting Nebraska this coming weekend. McNeil also made a decommitment following his visit to Indiana. McNeil decommitted from Lousiville after what was reported to be a very good visit to Indiana. McNeil’s coach confirmed that the visit was indeed very good. No one I talk to seems able or willing to give any concrete information but obviously distance does not favor OU in either case and with McNeil being and Indiana native who is surrounded by Indiana fans (including his coach) I’ve got to think they’re the favorite right now.

Andre James and Toby Weathersby (2015 OTs) – While coach Bedenbaugh is still trying to bring in another OT for the 2014 class he’s clearly going full speed ahead with the 2015 OT class. A number of offers have already been made and a number of visits have been made. This week coach Bedenbaugh visited, among other people, Andre James. Andre hails from Utah and already has offers from Oregon, UCLA, Arizona St, Wisconsin and others but if you want to know how quickly the perception of Oklahoma has been renewed listen to what he said when I asked about his interest in OU. He said, “I am extremely interested! They are probably one of my top schools right now!” I asked him whether he’d take an official visit to OU and he said “Yeah I definitely want to take an official to OU!” Coach Bedenbaugh has already visited Andre twice in the past week and a half. Toby Weathersby received an offer last weekend. He is current OU DT commit, Du’Vonta Lampkin’s friend. I asked Du’Vonta how interested Toby is in OU and he said it’s his “favorite school”.

Breidan Fehoko and Canton Kaumatule (2015 DL) – I don’t have a ton of information about these two monster DLinemen but what we do know is that coach Jerry Montgomery is making them a priority. He has visited them in Hawaii multiple times and in fact did so earlier this week.

Darrion Daniels (2015 DL) – Darrion told me that he is going to be at Oklahoma’s jr. day.

Trevor Elbert (2015 OT) – Got word from a friend in Dallas that coach Stoops went by earlier this week to see the talent offensive tackle. Again, high priorities in 2015 are going to be OL and DL.

I think that covers most of the things we’ve been talking about on the site this past week or two. If I remember anything else I’ll update this post. Thanks for reading y’all.

Woohoo! You win games in the trenches. The new staff seems to be all over recruiting quality big guys. Love it!

    • Super K says:

      Yes sir!

    • Cole Williams says:

Agree love bedenbaugh and monty, look what they did with the crop they didn’t get to recruit themselves…. gonna be scary when they start working with their own hand picked class

  • Cole Williams says:

Love that you guys go the extra mile to find things, this is great stuff I’m appreciative of the time you put in.

  • Ed Cotter says:

The commitment to getting the top notch talent in the trenches is going to get OU back to having those strong lines we had in the early to mid 2000’s. Love seeing this and the passion that Coach Mont and Coach B have for recruiting. BOOMER!!

  • SoonerfanTU says:

We can be VERY selective with our 2015 lineman (except may OT), due to the depth we already have committed next year in Wariboka, Lampkin, and Overton. And we probably lead on Barnett as well.

  • lovethemsooners says:

    Great update. Thanks for posting.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Been waiting for another summary, keep us updated between now and NSD! Thanks K.

  • Any update on Jalen Barnett? Thank you

  • Indy_sooner says:

Heard that Courtney cancelled his Tennessee visit, so hopefully we’ll be hearing what we want to hear soon

    • Jordan Esco says:

Not sure that’s entirely accurate. I think it might just be rescheduled. And think he still had plans to potentially visit both Tenn & Oregon, though we’ll see if both/either actually happen.

  • soonerinks says:

Super K, excellent summary of our recruiting. As info, my two sons are now avid readers.

  • Sooner4life says:

Love the recruiting summary… great stuff!!!!

  • Atlantasooner says:

Trevor Elbert is going to ATM this weekend, if he leaves Dogland uncommitted then OU has a shot.

  • j l says:

Excellent info as always, much appreciated. Im guessing we wont hear much on clark until after his visit this weekend to LSU?

What % chance would you give us to land, adoree’, guessing sub 5%?

    Thanks again.

  • Borba22 says:

No Clark news? Are we for sure out of the running with him going on his visit to LSU this weekend? Really hope we Michiah* (hint hint) Quick and Parker though.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I think the only reason Clark wasn’t included is just b/c he’s been talked about in posts earlier this week. But you seem to be up on the latest, had an in-home w/ Les Miles earlier this week and is scheduled to be at LSU this weekend.

After that, we’ll hopefully know a little more but I definitely would NOT say OU is out of the running for him at this point.

  • Coach_AElliott says:

If Parker and Clark both commit to SEC schools, does this cast a bad light on OU in losing the states top QB, DL, and DB to the SEC?

    • Indy_sooner says:

QBs is debatable. David Cornwell was not recruited by OU. I understand that this has to do with the fact that he is a pro-style QB whereas Hansen is a dual threat.
Yes-on the last part. Irrespective of position, any time you lose your top in-state talent, it sucks. No bones about that.

      • Jordan Esco says:

I’m w/ Indy on Cornwell. It doesn’t at all fit what OU wants to do offensively, so that’s not really applicable.

As for Clark, look if he sticks w/ LSU can you really blame him? That’s where D talent goes right now. And the fact OU is even in the position they’re in currently is a borderline miracle considering where things were at months ago after Shipp’s dismissal. He basically said after he didn’t really want anything to do w/ OU and that they shouldn’t waste their time recruiting him.

With Parker, I (like many) don’t think you have much to worry about.

  • soonerinks says:

One of the real diamonds in this class may be Samaje Perine and have not seen a lot of mention of him. He reminds me of a back that the Sooners had that came in with James Allen. Can’t remember his name but can still see him running down field with a full head of steam. With Perine and Mixon we might end up with a similar duo to what USC rolled out with Reggie Bush and the big fella (can’t remember his name either, old age is hell).

    • Jordan Esco says:

I’d agree w/ your sentiment that he tends to get taken for granted, IMO b/c he’s been committed for so long and obviously b/c Mixon was/is more “high profile.” But I also very much agree w/ you that the kid looks to be very talented and like a friggin grown a$$ man already.

Did you hear the stories from his OV last weekend when other visiting recruits mistakenly assumed he was a sophomore or junior?

      • soonerinks says:

No, didn’t see that. From looking at him on film he reminds me of that big back that USC had with Bush. Had tons of respect for Bush’s abilities but the guy that scared me to death before the Natl Championship game was the big guy. He was like a mack truck with speed/moves. Hope and believe that Perine is that type of back. If so, he could tear a passing league up especially with Mixon’s speed and ability to catch the ball.

        • soonerinks says:

Another back that Perine reminds me of is big Wayman Clark who was just an absolute monster of a fullback back around 79/80. Wayman was a head case but the guy could just flat out ball. Think he played only a year before getting kicked off the team.

        • DrZemus says:

          Ha, nevermind

    • Sooner316 says:

      Lendale White

      • soonerinks says:

316, that’s the guy, Bush got all the acclaim but that guy could go beast mode on you in a hurry.

    • Rashad See says:

As far as the guy you are trying to remember that was at OU it was Jerald Moore and the guy at USC was Lendale White

    • Sooner Ray says:

I have loved Perine since the first film I saw. Can’t wait to see him on the field.

    • Rob Turner says:

Gerald Moore. Allen and Moore we’re know as thunder and lighting.

    • Jake says:

Jerald Moore, the Thunder to Allen’s Lightning!

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Who do you guys think will be our next couple of commits? Courtney and someone from the 2015 class?

  • Rich says:

…What would you say the (slim) odds are at landing Andoree’ Jackson..?

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

From what I’ve heard, it’s possible, but very unlikely, and yeah, slim.

    • Cole Williams says:

He wants to go to the olympics for long jump so he wants a good track program giving his list narrows it to usc and florida and lsu. Also his sister goes to florida. But he said he felt like family on his visit here so I still think there’s a shot. Its in the dark but its a shot imo

  • godman says:

Is there any particular reason why we mainly have only line commits for 2015 as well as hearing mainly just recruiting for the same? At first glance one might assume these particular recruiters are more aggressive than all others on staff.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Primarily b/c that’s where championships are won, it’s a significant need (at least on O), and b/c they identified guys they really liked earlier than they’ve ever done and closed the deal early.

    • Cole Williams says:

From what I’ve read the coaches are putting an emphasis on OL and DL.

  • Gary Robbins says:

I’ve read so many OPINIONS on how the lack of a conference championship game could hurt the Big 12 in next years 4 team playoff games. What does everybody on this site think? By the way an excellent site without all the venomous posts! Very informative. Another quick silly statement. Are the Oklahoma coaches trying for the “frequent flyer miles champion of the year”? Excellent work coaches-leave no stone unturned.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Can’t get the oil if you don’t punch the well! Our coaches have been working their B’s off. I’m not sure we will be hurt by the championship game, We still have to win the conference to be there regardless.

    • Leroy Jenkins says:

The NCAA reportedly will create a separate division for the 5 “power conferences” (SEC, Big XII, B1G 10, Pac 12, ACC) soon, according to Yahoo (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaa-poised-to-create-separate-division-for-sec–big-ten–acc–pac-12–big-12-212725211.html?soc_src=mediacontentstory).

It’s inevitable that a rift was going to come within CFB as a result of the new playoff format. This, IMO, means that all of the conferences will soon have a conference championship game. Several schools not in the “power conferences” that have had recent success will attempt to move up. Don’t know what schools would move into the Big XII or how all that would work out, but I think that’s coming soon. The Big XII should consider adding UCF for sure since we missed out on Louisville.

Also, I think creating the seperate autonomy for the 5 power conferences is a horrible idea that will put a sour spin on this whole playoff format. Schools like Houston, Rice, and UCF will really get hit hard by this. It’s all about the $$$ and TV deals now.

  • Shifty says:

    Anybody visiting this weekend?

  • Borba22 says:

I think Michiah’s name is spelled with two h’s.

  • Leroy Jenkins says:

Is the 4* 2015 LB Justin Hilliard visiting this weekend, or is it for the Jr Camp?

  • Jason Rudd says:

What are our chances for Trey Lealaimatafao?

  • akbuc says:

Okay, I know this sounds crazy, and it is. I’ve posted about it on other OU websites though, so I’ll continue to preach the word here. Alaska. Yes. Alaska. Monty wants Polynesian linemen. We have the highest percentage of Polys of any state outside of HI. We have the really big ones too, straight from Samoa and Tonga. They came up to fish, and just never left. Now there is a thriving Poly community in north Anchorage. Bartlett High, East Anchorage High, and especially West Anchorage High, all have tons (literally and figuratively) of them. Outside of Anchorage, Kodiak is another school teaming with them. BYU’s starting NT, Manumaleuma, is from up here, and everyone saw what he did to Texas. Lots of them wrestle too, and as anyone from Oklahoma knows, that means that they’ll have great balance and just plain toughness. If Monty just made a contact with the three big north Anchorage high schools he could find a hidden gem on a consistent basis. Right now all the good ones go to Pac-12 schools or schools in Utah (most are Mormon. Weird but true) Am I biased? Absolutely. Am I a little bit delusional about my dream of an Alaskan wearing an OU uniform? Probably. Is there truth to what I’m saying? Definitely.

    • Super K says:

Interesting. Thanks for the unique perspective. Do they play a lot of ball up there? I’d love to see some film

      • akbuc says:

They don’t play sevens. You’ll never find a D-1 QB up here. You’ll find athletes though. Bartlett alone has produced two NFL players, another kid that now plays OL at USC, and another that could have played D-1 ball but decided to be a 3-time NCAA shot put champion. That’s all in the last ten years. Not a lot of high schools can say that. West is where you’ll find the big bodies though. Tevita Fehoko (West) is really raw, but he has all the measurables you’d want in a lineman. He was down to a lean 6’3″ 285 at summer wrestling practice. He carries 300lb easy during football. Lui Fa’amasino was a bruising 230lb all-state RB (decent but not great OLB) at 230lb. He’s top 4 at 220lb right now. I don’t know much about Leo Sega from Kodiak as a football player, but he’s a full 6’4″ 285lb wrestler on his way to a second state title. I don’t think you can discount the wrestling experience in OU recruiting. The Stoops played at Iowa. They respect the sport. “I love wrestlers, they are tough and they make great football players.” – Mike Stoops

    • Sooner Ray says:

I could see it happening if the schools could somehow contact each other. A lot of recruiting is done through couching contacts and we probable just don’t know anyone up there yet.

  • Atlantasooner says:

    Courtney Garnett just tweeted this,ONLYFORAKING
Core GPA came out to be 2.5 ! Which meaning I only need a 17 ! But i have 19 super score ! For rumors about me not qualifying there you go!

Is Patrick Au still a possibility for 2014?

  • Alexander says:

I read about a video that came out last week of Fehoko doing 37 reps of 225. Only 2 players have ever done more at the NFL combine and this freak isn’t even a senior. Started to get the vibe he is the biggest target of the coaches out of everyone
