Spotlight | Erick Wren

Image via 247sports.com

The first time I heard his name was coming out of the spring game in 2015.  I believe one of our readers pointed out how well they thought he had played and asked if I knew anything about him.  At the time I had to admit that I didn’t.

Per Soonersports.com Wren measures 6’2″ 308 and he graduated high school in 2013. He came out of Arizona Western Community College, and before that he went to Mesquite Horn HS.  He has a few hudl clips from when he was at Horn and Arizona Western, which we’ll get to in a minute, but beyond that, there’s not a whole lot to go off of.  When you snoop around the depth chart for last year, he quietly was the backup for Ty Darlington and was listed 16 pounds heavier than he is now.  Wren played a little last year but based on numerous reports he’s pushing for the starting center position. Whatever path he took to get to OU, it’s clear he’s earning the trust of the staff.

You’ve heard me rant and rave about dependability in the past.  I was a no-star nobody from 8-man Cromwell, Oklahoma, when I reported to camp at Missouri Southern in the fall of 1995.  I had pieced together my tuition and room and board with an in-state tuition waver because of my ACT score, some academic scholarships, and a partial athletic scholarship.  In the mean time I barely had enough money to do laundry on the weekends, so I made friends with the team equipment manager, Eddie, who would let me into the laundry room and basically looked the other way while I used the machines.  By the end of camp, myself and former teammate Jason Owen, also a true freshman, from Midwest City got called into Coach Lantz’s (the HC) office so he could tell us we had both made the travel squad and that we were in if either of the guards happened to go down. While I know this was only D-2 Missouri Southern, we had some salty teams in the mid 90’s that saw a few guys go to the NFL, so as I look back I can see now as I’m older why they had decided to get us ready.  Both of us made really good grades, and didn’t skip class.  Both of us were on time to all of the meetings, and kept our mouths shut.  We both, along with a guy who was a year older than us, Andy Saltink got all the extra film we could.  We saw it as a point of pride to move the ball in practice on our first team defense who had quite a few all-conference guys. We just outworked other people. For the next couple of years, the coaches kept trying to recruit over me I know for sure and Andy, but whoever they brought in we just beat their ass.  We were tougher than they were and we knew it…more importantly they knew it.

I must admit that anytime I hear about a Dominique Whaley,  Aaron Ripkowski or this year a Nick Basquine or back in the day a Cory Heinecke I get excited.  I absolutely love it when a guy comes in and takes the job.  I love it when a no-star nobody forces you to remember their name because they beat out everyone else.  Like I said before, obviously Coach B has to seen something in this guy.  The fact that he’s in the conversation to be the starting center with the depth that Bedenbaugh has brought on campus speaks volumes about the level of trust that Bedenbaugh has in him.  Like respect, trust is something that can’t be gifted.  It has to be earned.

Right now, Coach Bedenbaugh has just a matter of days before the five guys he feels like he can depend on the most trot out against Houston.  The defense that the Sooners will face on Labor Day weekend is one that has the ability to give an offense fits.  The Cougars will line up and attack, blitz, stunt, twist, mix up the looks and they will be absolutely disruptive.  While most average fans have already put the Sooners at 1-0, those of us who know football understand that if Oklahoma isn’t assignment sound on both sides of the ball that they could come out of NRG stadium scratching their heads, and pissed off at 0-1.  So even moreso, with such an early season test against a team that intercepted Florida State 4 times in a 38-24 win in the Peach Bowl a little over 7 months ago, Bedenbaugh has to have a lot of trust in this guy.  So what do I think about him?

Watching his HS tape I saw a kid with loads of power.  But I also saw a guy who was very raw and maybe needed to trim down a little bit.  But even still there was a guy who moved people with ease.  Then you fast forward to the tape at Arizona Western.  The obvious power in the hands is there and very evident…especially in the run game.  While the lateral movement isn’t eye popping it’s good enough.  Frankly at Center you need a guy who can root people out of there and move them in a short area easily.  In a nutshell that’s who he is.  It’s rare that you’re going to see a center go one on one, but you need that guy in the middle who’s a stump.  Thing about a stump is that you can spend all day out beating and chopping and hammering and burning, even chaining a truck or tractor to it and a lot of em won’t let go.   You need a guy like that in the middle who’s almost like an immovable object. It seems like when I watch his game that’s exactly who he is.

Wren saw a little time last year so I went back to take a look at him in action late in the Akron and Kansas games. He’s probably one of the heaviest handed linemen that Bedenbaugh has. He wasn’t great in the zone game as the lateral movement isn’t his strong suit, but the power he displays is something that can’t be sniffed at. No way you get stuffed on the goal line or in short yardage with him at center. He will generate movement vertically and root people out. Hands are absolute weapons.

Honestly I hope he gets the job.  He’s a scrapper and a guy who seems like to me has worked his butt off to get the job.  He’s earned his place at the table and if he’s the guy Bedenbaugh believes he can depend on the most, then I’m all for it.  A lineup of Brown, Ford, Wren, Alvarez and Samia across the front is one that I like a lot.  Looking at his run blocking ability, if he’s equally good at picking up blitzes etc, this offense is going to be a lot of fun to watch.  Guys like Perine, Mixon and Abdul Adams will benefit greatly from an improved physical offensive line.  The need to keep Baker Mayfield healthy is paramount, and I’d expect the Sooners to lean HEAVILY on the run game early on with unproven receivers.  Bedenbaugh knows this.  Lincoln Riley knows this and Stoops knows this.  Erick Wren has had to shown his ability to be a difference maker up front to unseat guys like Ben Powers(sliding Alvarez over) and Alex Dalton who were both very highly thought of.  At the end of the day it doesn’t matter where you come from, it’s what you do when you get there that counts.  I can’t wait to see who the final five are up front, and personally I hope Erick is one of them.

Great write-up, JY. Most of us love these underdog type stories. Wren sounds like a high character guy who has done it the way you and others have. Hope he gets the start and earns end-of-season recognition and a chance for the next level.

Thanks for the break down. I too hope he gets his shot to be the starter and takes care of business for his team. Boomer!

jy………..jewel of a write-up, you put yourself into this one. There was a brief article in news recently that related how he’s overcome every obstacle in his path to get to this point. Really hope he’s able to pull it off in a very big way. Thxs…………

  • Sooner Ray says:

Nice as usual JY. I really like the size of this kid and if coach B and the staff think he’s doing better than anyone else at the position, gotta put him out there. I just hope they can put five out that work well together.

    • JY says:

Yeah me and you both. Not too worried about the physicality, just the assignment sound mental homework the guys have to do up front.

      • wolfbuilder says:

Love the idea of wren, and alverez side by side it 2 pair of eyes thay play center and could help each other make sure they get in the correct protection

      • soonermusic says:

Great article, as usual, JY. “just the assignment sound mental homework” this phrase sums up why some folks are puzzled about who gets the call at center, sometimes. It’s a huge difference maker. Great to have overwhelming physicality as well, maybe this guy will have both.

  • Scott says:

Brown , Ford , Wren , Dalton , Samia would be my starting lineup. JY i think this oline will surprise some people this year.

    Great read

  • AgedBill says:

Thanks for the excellent write-up. It helped to sooth my nervous anticipation for Houston.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Gotta love the versatility of this line. It seems that practically all of them can play at least two positions like G/C or T/G. It makes the depth that much greater.

  • hOUligan says:

I loved Ikard and Ty but Wren is that powerful guy in the middle. Where those guys used great technique and positioning, they worked to gain the weight and power that is natural with Wren. His arms look like an avg guys legs and he has that heavy base. Evidently he is also a student of the game and is able to get the calls right. I know this line needs to come together in a hurry but IMO they are going to just wear teams out and keep coming if the D doesn’t have some depth.

  • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

    Good article JY.

  • RBear says:

The kind of guy that makes OU the family it is, look forward to watching him succeed.

  • CcrBoomer says:

I just become a big Wren fan! 100% pulling for this young man.

  • AdamsHall says:

I read that Wren and Alvarez come from the same High School. They must have been stout with both of them in the line at the same time.

  • Brent says:

    OU is walk-on U.

  • Tony B says:

Great write up JY. Do you think his physical play or knowledge of the position won (assuming he wins the job) him the job over Alvarez? I’m sure making the correct line call is as important as his blocking ability.

    • JY says:

Not sure being on the outside, I know there’s a lot of mental, physical and attitudical that goes into winning a guy like BNB over.

      • Tony B says:

I like that new attitudical. Pretty much sums up what is probably going on with Wren getting the job. LOL

  • Kody K. says:

Hey JY, just wanted to give a fellow alumni a shout out. Man you just missed playing with Rod Smith. I believe JT and Richard Jordan played in the mid nineties though. I remember Switzer’s son played for Southern at some point but can’t remember how well he did. Anyway thanks for the write up.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Thrash was there during JY’s time I believe. Guy was a freak athlete

Edit I just read JT, my bad ha!

      • JY says:

Yeah I knew of Thrash growing up as Wewoka is right down the road from Cromwell. Thrash was a genetic freak and went 6’2″ 215 and benched 425 as a wr. He got 225 something like 30 times for the scouts and ran a 4.2. Dude was crazy athletic. Works in the NFL league office now.

        • Dustin says:

Met JT once. He married a girl from my hometown and he was here visiting. Seems like a genuinely nice person. Good guy as far as I’m concerned.

        • Jpsooner23 says:

Those are the exact same numbers my buddy used to say about him, Bobby from sap town and I were/are good friends and he was always talking about what that guy could do

    • JY says:

Yeah man JT was one of my rb’s and Richard Jordan a.k.a “Dirt” was a guy who got drafted by the Lions in 1996. Both great teammates and unforgettable people. I’ve got some funny stories about JT!

  • Jim Slemaker says:

So, that really wasn’t about Erick Wren.

  • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Way off topic, but the Last Chance U kid was beaten out at Auburn. It is hard to be sure of the total picture on any documentary because they can be so heavily edited, but I just could not see how he was going to be the starting QB at Auburn. At least early on, he will not be.

    http://247sports.com/Article/Auburn-Tigers-name-Sean-White-its-starting-quarterback-46968911

    • j l says:

I looked at his stats on 247, and he didnt put up much outside that final game where he scored 6 times in a half.

If you cant beat out a kid who cant even walk on to MSU, you arent going to win the job at auburn.

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I was surprised he got the offer.

        • j l says:

same. Thats why you dont look at the play against a 2-7 juco team as the reason so sign a kid lol.

      • Jesse says:

That’s because he wasn’t the starter on his juco team. And if anyone did watch it the starter was finally told he could be a preferred walk on at Mississippi State

        • j l says:

Right, he didnt start because he wasnt that good lol. Really good athlete, mediocre passer. He should have got to play a lot more considering how many blowouts they had.

I watched the entire thing, and it didnt say anything about wyatt being a preferred walk on, only that he was going to MSU, and mullen wouldnt even let him walk on. If he did, then thats cool.

    • Drew says:

I’m not in the least bit surprised. Kid never showed an ability to throw beyond TK9’s terrible TCU performance.

  • Stephen Dale says:

nice story……..hopefully Bedenbaugh can rotate enough players to keep guys fresh….

  • j l says:

If dalton’s hand was 100%, who do you like at RG better, alvarez or dalton?

    • JY says:

I’ve always been a big fan of both. Dalton was an absolute beast on tape as was Alvarez. Still it comes down to dependability. To me you can play with a broken hand especially on the o line. Who can coach B depend on the most.

  • Bob Edwards says:

We need a few guys like Wren on the team. Not only is it great to watch the story unfold, but they are good lessons for the other guys. Just because you are a star in HS doesn’t mean you can walk into a big time program and succeed. It takes hard work and a lot of heart. Guys like Wren teach that to his teammates in a way that a coach can’t. Young guys often turn off when the older folks are talking, but when one of them demonstrates it in his life then it’s much easier for them to learn.

  • SamSooner says:

JY, awesome, awesome, write up. Wren has jumped off the film to me since day one. I’m rooting for this kid.

  • LottsSocks says:

God bless Cromwell OK and Okemah OK! My uncle was an all state RB at Okemah way back in the day, went to OU to play football before a lady caught his eye and he gave football up. That was a good read, thanks for the info!

JY – always love your stuff. You understand line play and give us insight that most of us would never have. I hope there will be a trench warfare after the UH game so we can see how the line worked together and how the individuals did. Until we have a game in the book, we are all hoping, but don’t have any evidence.

          LOL!

Swim tea is gearing up. We are having a golf outing tomorrow. Should make a lot of cash.

  • Mike Reed says:

If it’s any consolation….James Hale told the OU Club of Tulsa tonight that Alvarez would start over Wren at center.

    • JB says:

So, Mike Reed, what you’re saying is that Erick Wren will definitely get the start? ??

      • JB says:

Hate to reply to myself (ok, not really) but I remember hearing Hale tell a caller a few years ago that OU was only going to take 1 DT in that class and the coaches were content with only 1. I believe they signed 3 that year. Good call!

  • SoonerHat says:

I don’t think it’s about Alvarez over Wren tho, it’s more about Wren being better at center than “insert name” is at right guard. If that’s the case, Alvarez will slide over to guard and Wren will play center. I might be wrong but that’s the way I took it. Cuz Alvarez can play both. You want your best five. Samia can move around too, they have many movable parts.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Remember that Jordan thought Alvarez player inconsistent last year, so he may not be the best choice at LG.

  • SoonerHat says:

To further that point, from what I’ve read it seems that Brown, Samia, and Alvarez are the three linemen that r definitely in ther. But since two of them are movable parts (Samia and Alvarez) that affords us the opportunity to just simply find two of the next best linemen, regardless of position. And whoever they are, you expect that they are the two weakest of the bunch so you want to put them in ther strongest positions. If Wren is one, then he definitely plays center based on his strengths (and lack of positional flexibility) listed in the above article. If Bobby Evans is one, he appears to b strongest at right tackle so you move Samia into guard. Based on everything I’ve read, it feels like that’s what’s going on.

    • SoonerHat says:

My replies aren’t going where I expect them to, sorry, I’m not much of a social media person. I’ll get it figured out tho..

  • Sacramento Sooner says:

man, great stuff! Been wanting some insight on this battle. Thanks for the insight!

  • DrewChubbs says:

Awesome observations and analyses, JY. And it’s pretty neat you gave a shout out to one of my old teammates and classmates, Jason Owen! He was a helluva guy. I have to agree that there is usually something special about those guys that come in, work hard, and assert themselves. When those types of players come along, they can really inspire the guys around them.

  • metzker says:

    Great read,JY thanks.

  • metzker says:

  • MoJoOkie says:

Good stuff JY. One question I have is more about Wren’s smarts. The center calls what’s about to happen from the defensive side and a good center is responsible for making the right calls to the other guys. Having said that, if I know that, I’m sure Bedenbaugh lives it. Thanks for the analysis.

  • Roger Nixon says:

“We saw it as a point of pride to move the ball in practice on our first team defense who had quite a few all-conference guys. We just outworked other people. Awesome, JY.

    Great Post!

  • Hollerback says:

Can he make the calls at center? Center has to have a quick thinker. He said he had a learning disability but he has obviously overcome that to make it this far. IDK if that would even have any bearing on “football IQ”, just curios what you all think
