FOOTBALL

Incredibly cool moment for Caleb Gastelum caught on camera. (SSTV)

If Monday is any indication, the local media is really, REALLY excited about the SEC story line(s) angle this week. (NewsOK)

Truthfully, I really don’t have that big of a problem with GameDay not coming to Norman on Saturday. But I also don’t enjoy it and haven’t for some time. I can appreciate the pub it brings for the program, so strictly from that standpoint I’d understand why some might be disappointed. So I’m cool if they want to go elsewhere, but the fact one of their talking heads would have the nerve to claim ESPN doesn’t have an SEC agenda is beyond laughable. Doesn’t surprise me in the slightest they’d try to make the claim mind you (and I don’t buy the implied conspiracy that they’re not coming to save the SEC face assuming OU were to win Saturday night), but still rather humorous. (Landthieves)

The Big 12 suspended a replay official (no, his name wasn’t Gordon Riese) from the KSU/ISU game. Because that’s considered to be a “punishment.” (Big 12)

That shine is coming off Charlie Strong real quick like. (Daily Texan)

OSU QB, J.W. Walsh, reported out 6-8 weeks with a broken foot. (NewsOK)

We had a Waterboy sighting in yesterday’s Pittsburgh game.

I don’t know if you watched the Texas game, but the second half was ugly. They looked really bad offensively and defensively. It was fun to watch honestly. Still pisses me off we stayed in this conference for them and could’ve been in the Pac-12.

I watched the game in case Mike Stoops needed some notes from me (it could happen!). The Texass defense looked freaking fast in the first half, I kid you not. I was thinking THAT defense is going to stretch OUs offensive potential. Then the second half, I don’t know what happened….. It was like they all got neutered at half time. I don’t buy the “the offense not moving the ball caused the defense to wear out” line because it was four consecutive scoring drives out of the half for BYU. Can’t call it a conditioning issue because Texass has one heck of a conditioning program. That Texass o-line is very raw. If the shorthorn offense ever gets it going then they will be tough. Texass fan base is showing why several coaches passed on the offer- Strong is catching it and I don’t think that’s fair. Once he gets his guys in there and the Mack Brown guys are purged this team will have its “new identity” .

      • Swanny says:

I would agree with you, but the body of work just isn’t there for Strong. He’s only played like 4 top 25 teams in his career as a head coach. He’ll play more top 25 teams this year.

        • blaster1371 says:

True. I thought it was an odd fit- Strong and Texass- from the get-go. I loved the fact this beat down happened in Austin. I think over the last four years, maybe five, Texass has a losing home field record.

      • Jed says:

Strong is an excellent coach, we’re all underestimating how broken that team was. Mack flirted with disaster last year and this year the ravens have come home to roost. Seriously, Charlie would have been better off dismissing all their players and firing everyone on the staff down to the janitors. There was nothing left to salvage after Mack had broken it for so long.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

They were/are less broken than OU was when Stoops took over. Good coaches find a way to get the most out of their team. I haven’t seen that yet out of UT. They have TONS of talent. Strong should be able to impact them with his coaching.

          • FeedtheMonster says:

I am personally not buying the TONS of talent line anymore. If that where true, they would have at least hung with BYU at home. Maybe they have tons of Track talent or some other kind of combine talent, but actually playing football, I don’t think so. I’m not saying they are Northwestern State, but they aren’t Oregon or Florida State either.

I watched every minute….and loved it.

I saw the Gastelum video last night. Very cool the way the team responded to Stoops announcement.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Too early to judge Charlie Strong, he’s cleaning up Mack Brown’s mess this year; not an easy task.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

True but he might be making a mess of his own.

      • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I thought about that, as well, but only time will tell. Either way Texas fans need to be patient, though that may be asking too much.

    • LXXIV says:

Considering they have been getting all of those 4 and 5 star players for years you would think Charlie could find enough to put together a defense. After all, he is supposed to be a defensive genius. Perhaps this new stage is a little to big for the new Texas coaching staff. LOL!

    • Daryl says:

I agree. The bigger thing I worry about is our boys looking past them again and getting routed again in Dallas. I know we all say oh now way, but as I remember it that is exactly what we said last year.

      • LXXIV says:

Yes, that was a travesty last year. Disaster awaits a team that enters a game poorly prepared and over confident, and you can take that to the bank.

      • Jared William Reininger says:

I agree completely with you. Said that several times already to so many people. Our team seems focused now, but the RRR is a game that it is whoever wants it more, anyone can win it any year.

As far as Strong as a coach, I don’t know how I feel about him. I mean last year, they lost to BYU at BYU. This year it was at Texas. And the natives seemed more than restless, they were starting to leave when down two scores. I think Strong is doing a good thing and trying to enforce greater discipline, and if given the time it could lead to a much better Texas team, which for the Big 12 would be great. But right now they look like the exact same team as last year. I saw them making the same mistakes, I don’t know why they would sleep on BYU after last year, but they appeared to.

Their run defense looked AWFUL, they appeared so flat on both sides of the ball. If Heupel will commit to the run against them, something I didn’t understand about last years RRR game, I think we will have our way with them. And from what I saw of their O line, our front seven should be very familiar with their QB.

That Pittsburgh video defines the meaning of the word FOOTball.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

    The Gastelum video is awesome!

    • soonermusic says:

tied with Striker for leading tackler, plus a sack and a goal line interception. Pretty good day at the office.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Any idea when we might find out the start time for the @WVU game?

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Wow…that Gastelum video is awesome. You could tell the players especially those who were Senior and been around were as excited as he was.

As for the Tennessee game. Last night I was thinking how cool is it that we are fans of a team that strives to play good teams. (Yes scheduling is so far out that team can go up or down) But think about it…the past couple of years we have had a series with Notre Dame and before that Florida State and before that Miami. There is so much hype and talk about these games, way cooler than just another Savannah State. Make me really appreciate Joe C. and Bob Stoops.

  • soonermusic says:

Strong says he knew during warmups the team wasn’t ready to play. Never heard that admission before…yikes.

    • Stats says:

I wonder if Mack was ever that observant…

      • soonermusic says:

Well, on page 2 of the Coach-Speak Handbook, it clearly states, “We had a good week of preparation, everyone seemed focused and ready to go.”

On the other hand, if he’s really spotting that stuff during the warmups, Strong might need to revisit his motivational strategy.

  • j l says:

The gastelum video shows how much love these guys have for each other. I think thats really the difference between us, and teams that have a bunch of hired mercenaries.

  • James says:

This just in SEC fans are delusional! I was watching the Paul Finenbaum show(self inflicted tourture) and a Tennessee fan called in and asked if Tennessee beats OU and runs the table did Finebaum think the SEC could get 3 teams into the playoff…. Literally laughed out loud…. Good grief.
