Sign “send them on the trail of tears”, insensitive, but in the age of all getting a ribbon and being PC it’s ok to do the ‘tomahawk chop’ while chanting some stereotyped movie sound-byte aaa-ooo-aaaa–oo-aaaa—aaa-aa-oooo over and over. Got it.

    • spools89 says:

To be fair, there are plenty of Indians who disagree with those actions you mentioned. It is not at all okay, and FSU using the ‘Seminoles’ as their mascot actually opens the door to behavior like the OSU sign and the ‘tomahawk chop ‘, which plenty of Indians I know personally find quite offensive. Just because FSU does it regularly, does not make it any more okay or less offensive.

      • JT says:

Plenty of Indians I know couldn’t care less.

        • spools89 says:

Don’t get me wrong, plenty of Indians I know feel the same way. I personally couldn’t care less about mascots as long as it’s the same for all races. I think the cartoonishness could be toned down a bit though, especially in the Cleveland Indians case. The point is, as an Indian myself, is that while I may not personally feel offended by a mascot like the Seminoles or redskins (which I am not), I can totally understand if another Indian is. I know the history and I respect it, and I feel that there is no malice meant in today’s mascots. Historically, maliceful intent may be a little more muddled. I also feel that other Indians do have a right to feel offended at some of the ridiculous things portrayed during football exhibitions. I can definitively see how someone could easily and justifiably be offended by things like the redskins based off of my own experiences in today’s world. I have plenty of friends and family who don’t care, but I also have tons who really wish the mascots would go away. The biggest problems I have with it are that Indians don’t really have a say in whether the mascots can be used or not. I guess their voices are being heard more now through the media, but I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the blowback that the discussion is getting from the general population. The other problem I have with the mascots is where is the money going. Everyone knows the struggles of American Indians in America in the past and, especially, present. Yet, our image that my people have worked to cultivate is being used to make some guy in a suit, or in FSU’S case, an institution, a boatload of money, which they hardly use to help American Indians at all. Everyone gets so mad about college players not being able to make money off of their likeness, but when Indians say something about someone else making money off their image, they are casino hungry and money grabbing. I don’t mean to cause strife because I really enjoy this board, and felt like I can offer a unique perspective without being trolled or shouted down. I think that is a testament to the posters here. I didn’t mean to ramble, but, so is life

          • FeedtheMonster says:

I think you have a very good point about the money. It would be awesome if every member of the tribe got a commission from the money brought in. I know people who are Seminole, and they like FSU. I think if it is done in a way that honors a tribe, and they get input from the people of that tribe that is good. The thing on FSU’s campus that says “Unconquered” is pretty cool. The Cleveland type of stuff should not be anymore in my opinion.

      • Clint Lenard says:

You’re going to get a bunch of white people claiming they know Indians who don’t care or “consider it a term of endearment”. But people on the Rez do care, which is why it’s become an issue.

    • paganpink says:

In all fairness when the PC crowd started acting outraged a few years ago the Seminole tribe itself stepped up and said that they consider themselves warriors- as the only tribe to have never surrendered to American troops- and they considered it an honor to be memorialized on the football field. The fake native Americans had to slink away since they were actually white people trying to stir up outrage at THEIR feelings, not those of the real Indians.

      • hOUligan says:

To be clear in light of my sarcasm, I find both actions offensive and what I have trouble with is the idea I need to differentiate as to which is most or least offensive, NoDak Fighting Sioux or Seminoles, or OK, the Seminoles’ chant, because one administrative body says so. An issue emotions run high over and would rather we talked football so am sorry I chose to comment. How ’bout them Sooners!!!

    • paganpink says:

I think it’s incredibly offensive to even reference the trail of tears where so many died. But OSU is known for their lack of class. Case in point- the end of last years game against us where they were throwing things and one student was trying to trip an active player on the field. Plus they keyed my truck that one time! A Ford Lightning, at that! The gall of those punks!

      • FeedtheMonster says:

It’s even worse because these jerks are in the state where the trail ended. Also, newsflash – those Seminoles where in no way a part of the Trail of tears. UNCONQUERED.

    • Ed Cotter says:

Suffice it to say that OSU fans/ students can be insensitive and ridiculous. Trail of Tear sign, tripping guys after defensive touchdowns. throwing snowballs, just a few examples. ABC/ESPN may think long and hard before having Game Day there again.

  • Jason Vos says:

Lol funny how ppl forget Dmitri Flowers is a freshman. Its like Trey Millard is still out there

  • Jason Vos says:

I think Mead will become a weapon soon, looks the part. Just needs some experience

    • Zack says:

I agree. He and smallwood just need some more reps but I think it will get better by the time we play Tennessee and we will need one of them to make a big catch. I’m still not worried about our offense I think they kept it simple and didn’t want to ask knight to do too much since his backup was the starting TE.

  • JT says:

The OSU fight song is the *real* embarrassment. I’m looking over my shoulder for a carnival when I hear it. The sign? Meh.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

I just re-looked at Shep’s TD (the one he got credit for anyway). There is no doubt he got a “low 5” from the referee. Hope the dude doesn’t get in trouble.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Perine and Flowers already look like seasoned vets, Quick, Mead, and Parker just need some time on the field to gain some confidence. All the freshmen show signs of true talent and the future looks bright for all of them.

    • Zack says:

Did you see how high zack Sanchez jumped to get that pick? If he plays like that all year we may be looking for his replacement soon.
Also Grissom looked extremely athletic from the jack.

      • Sooner Ray says:

Yes I did and he is very good in pass defense but I would like to see him be a little better at wrapping up on runners. He will need to be a complete package to go high in the draft. I hope we keep him through his Senior year, but I’m selfish that way. 🙂

        • Zack says:

No doubt I hope we get to keep him that long too. I’m sure the coaches turned on the film and said let’s aim for the ankles next time, your 175 soaking wet, if it didn’t work against la tech it’s not going to work vs anyone else.

      • lovethemsooners says:

That pic as well as the blocked FG were extremely athletic moves by Sanchez. He does need to wrap up better though. If he continues to rely on a one hit tackle, he’s going to get burned at some point this season.

        • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I thought the same thing. There was one play where he did that and I screamed at the TV, “HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING?”

      • blaster1371 says:

Grissom completely shut down the passing lane to his side. Guy is amazing at timing his jump.

        • Zack says:

I think he’s going to end up with a first round grade. It will depend on how his combine goes but I don’t see why teams especially late in the first round wouldn’t want him as their pass rushing olb. To me his ceiling his Demarcus ware and that’s a pretty good potential.

    • blaster1371 says:

Flowers looked every bit like Millard as a freshmen. He needs to clean up his game but he did more good than bad. Now if he has that hurdle move we saw in Millard then we shall all be intertained!

  • lovethemsooners says:

I finally read where there are several(if not all) of the OU coaches that are disappointed in how the Frank Shannon situation is being played out. Wonder if we could get some insight as to how this could effect our recruiting. Are the recruits aware of this situation, and if so, would any be willing to comment on how/if these actions have effected their thought process in regards to coming to play at Oklahoma.

I know we made quite an impression on Malik Jefferson during his visit, but the fact that he is related to Frank makes me pretty skeptical on how he views OU now.

    • hOUligan says:

Watching Boren and Castiglione during the broadcast fawn about their working relationship with each other and Coach Bob, kept wondering what kind of strain this is causing.

      • lovethemsooners says:

I’ve been wondering the same thing.

        • roygbell says:

Don’t want to cause a fight, but Boren and Joe didn’t start this mess. I know it is hard to understand, but the whole thing goes back to Frank. None of us know the “real facts” of what actually happened.

I know this is hard for some to understand, but David Boren and Joe Castigilione have to protect OU’s interests as that is their job. I hate it as much as the next guy, but blaming Boren and Joe for this mess is simply putting the blame in the wrong spot. At least that is my opinion/thought on the situation.

It is just like Mixon’s deal. Had Joe taken care of his business and just walked away from a really bad situation he would be playing this year. You simply can’t blame OU for him being suspended either.

You want to blame someone other than Frank then blame the US Congress for passing a flawed piece of legislation and the US Department of Education for the way they are enforcing it.

          That is who I blame.

          • blaster1371 says:

            Can’t argue with this.

          • paganpink says:

Hey- I can and I did! LOL! Everyone realizes it’s a political decision and then throws their hands up and gives up. Even Blevins and John Holcomb were complaining last night, as much as they can given FCC AND of course NCAA restrictions on broadcasters. What if it were YOU in his shoes, Blaster?

          • hemisooner says:

            Great post

          • Gary Robbins says:

I agree. Has anyone read the Title IX law. Is it automatic suspension from the school for 1 year and lose of scholarship? Are there any lesser penalties like suspension for 3 games? Are you allowed any type of due process or appeal? Is there any way to prove your innonce?

          • blaster1371 says:

I have looked into this and the penalties are not “adjustable” to fit the situation. If found in violation the minimum is one year suspension the maximum is expulsion.

          • Gary Robbins says:

As I was wondering above who actually found him in violation?

          • blaster1371 says:

            The OU title IX committee.

          • Gary Robbins says:

Thanks man. I love those secret committies. It’s on to Tulsa and a big win for OU. Anxious to see the improvement this week.

          • paganpink says:

It’s a politically driven process to show the federal government is concerned about violence against women. It is obviously very biased against males at every stage and that can result in some ludicrous cases where there is no proof, there are no criminal charges, and they then run what could best be described as a Kangaroo court where the burden of proof is very low, and the defendant is essentially required to prove his innocence! That’s un-American and unconstitutional.

          • paganpink says:

If none of us know the “real” facts then how does it all go back to Frank? That makes no sense at all. If he is innocent then the rest of this is nothing but Kabuki theater to keep the Federal Government happy, with no consideration for the young man involved whatsoever! As shown by the decision to not play him even though a judge has ruled him eligible. We all understand CYA- but I for one won’t declare a man guilty that has been convicted of nothing, simply because the legislation is “flawed” Don’t you have an obligation to do the moral thing regardless of what some bureaucrat, simply driven by an ideology that believes the man is always wrong, tells you to do? And what happens when the woman says nothing happened and you still punish the person? As is our present case. Is that Congresses fault as well? Because the school can play him if it wishes to- and I wish they had the courage to do so.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Well, they always fawn over each other in interviews.

      • blaster1371 says:

I don’t think this is causing strain. It might be a point of disagreement but Shannon is a small part of what they all do. I think OU is acting on the side of caution and unfortunately that impacts Shannon. Of OU were to suffer a financial title IX penalty then you would be talking several students taking a hit. I think title IX is the problem and is somehow being overlooked media scrutiny (we have scrutinized the heck out of it). I would love for ESPN outside the lines or 30/30 do an updated examination of this policy.

    • blaster1371 says:

Where did you read about the coaches take on the Shannon deal?

      • Zack says:

I would like to know the story also but I do think the coaches want shannon on the field and believe this was a political move by the university. Why else would they practice shannon with the ones until the game week prep.

But I hope this gets resolved in favor of shannon because it don’t like the he said she said scenarios. I wonder if she was expelled from school? If not then I think Shannon’s lawyer should have a field day.

      • lovethemsooners says:

I read it on OUI, but they didn’t name the coach for obvious reasons. However like Zack says, I didn’t need to read it anywhere for confirmation. He was running with the 1’s all the way up until about 10 days before the season. I find it very hard to believe the coaches would have played Gastelum ahead of Shannon. Those facts pretty much back up the fact that his not playing was not a coaching decision.

        • blaster1371 says:

I can understand why the coaches have to stay out of this discussion. They really have no bearing on its outcome and they still have a schedule to play and 84 other scholarship players to tend to. I thought a Cleveland country judge had suspended the sentence (I am not sure of the legal term for this) while Shannon’s appeal was going on, meaning he could play. Guess it would be a strange situation if his suspension was upheld somewhere in the season and he had played x number of games. How would that work out? The rest of this season and some of the next? I can see having him set out now would allow Shannon to play next year if the suspension by title IX is upheld. But it’s a wasted opportunity for Shannon if the suspension is overturned as he will have sit out for nothing.

          • Won says:

I thought it would work out where he might be able to play while the appeal was pending, which would go on until after January and then he would either get to stay in school or go NFL …

School: We think you violated Fed Law and so we suspend you
Frank : Let me get my due process under the Fed Law and appeal

            Judge : Y’all chill-out until we review
School : You are suspended despite your appeal being in process
            Frank : ???

          • Gary Robbins says:

Who is keeping Shannon from “playing”?
            1. NCAA
            2. Federal government
            3. District Attorney
            4. Norman police dept.
            5. Lie detector tests
            6. Alleged victim
            7. Bob Stoops
            8. David Boren
            9. A “secret” council of faculty, students, plus a chief of staff of student affairs.
            Just wondering.

          • blaster1371 says:

The only body on your list that is empowered to do such 1,2,7,8. I have not heard anything about the NCAA in this. Federal government only of the Justice Department has a title IX over watch agency. My objections to the title IX committee have been voiced clearly and several times on this site.

          • Gary Robbins says:

I guess Boren has the final say so but was reading somewhere that he follows what the council of student affairs reccomends. Some have wondered how this might affect recruiting and would other schools use it as a tool against OU. Nobody knows and we will have to wait till February for the real answer. If the team wins all their games everything will be ok. How about this: Shannon, DGB, Mayfield, and Mixon come back next year madder and meaner than ever on the football field.

          • blaster1371 says:

I’ve thought about its impact on recruiting too. I’ve come to the conclusion that recruits are so wrapped up in their own self interest (which is understandable) that this won’t matter what happens with Shannon if they think OU will get them to the next level.

          • soonermusic says:

i agree with you Blaster about it’s impact on recruiting.

  • blaster1371 says:

I read the OSU student’s apology on Newsok and I thought he was sincere and he stated himself well. He offered no explanation or excuse and said “my bad”. Basically he saw it one way and when others brought it to his attention about how it came across he realized his offense. The only thing that makes the PC thing more galling is when someone does offend unintentionally that they are crucified. This world has become intolerant of honest mistakes or learning from a bad decision and even scarier—– skeptical of sincere apologies. This young man and many others got a crash course on native American experience in the U.S and I for one think that is a good thing. Mistake turned learning experience. “Let him who has not sinned cast the first stone.” Don’t care what your beliefs are, that’s a good standard right there. End of sermon.

    • Pokerman says:

Enough of the PC crap. If people don’t like it, then just ignore it. Bunch of whiny little girls.

      • SamSooner says:

If something is offensive, it’s offensive. Political correctness has nothing to do with it.

        • Pokerman says:

Offensive only if you choose to be offended. And yes, that is the basis of political correctness. No matter what you do, somebody will take offense.

          • SamSooner says:

And knowing that we’ve offended someone should be enough for us to stop doing it anymore. Is there anything that offends you so much that you wish someone wouldn’t do it, say it?

          • JT says:

You do understand that the mascot you celebrate is a remembrancer of the unlawful entry of white settlers into tribal land ceded to the U.S. government, right? I am offended by your user name. Take it down.

          • paganpink says:

Sooners were cheaters, LOL. Who knew?

          • Pokerman says:

Sure, if it’s directed at me personally. Where I get really offended is when somebody tries to tell me what I can or cannot say or do or how I should think. If someone doesn’t like what I say or do, let them ignore me … but when you try to censor me you’ve got a problem on your hands.

          • boomersooner says:

The thing that gets me is that its not the people who should be offended that say something, its usually the people whiter than me who want to cry foul

  • Zack says:

Just curious who asked stoops if he had a chance to talk with gundy after the osu game on Saturday night. His answer was no, in case you were wondering.

I was watching parts of that game with my friend and he was wearing his cowboy boxers or something. And kept telling me we need osu to be good. I kept telling him then tell them to stop sucking so bad.

  • rphdenton says:

? for jy if he’s around, or anyone…….I couldn’t see the game, but there are several posts on oui saying that bell had a rough day in the blocking dept, in their opinion………any thoughts here……thxs

    • thebigdroot says:

Stoops said he doesn’t know where either are. Bell had a few real nice blocks but from what I understand and the little bit I have seen he struggled a little. Still have to watch the entire game but Bell lined up all over the place.

    • Zack says:

People are going to complain about anything. Was he as solid as rip may have been in that situation? Probably not but he’s probably as good of a blocking TE as we have on the roster. The other guys may be more used to blocking but bell is probably stronger than McNamara and ijalana. He at least got in there and got pushed around but that’s better than whiffing completely.

    • Drew says:

He had a few really nice blocks (i.e. first td ran right behind him), and a few whiffs. It’s a process, but I was personally excited by his performance.

  • JT says:

I know I’m looking too far ahead, but I’m dying to see Kasitati pull around and blow up Shawn Oakman. I hope the coaching staff posts one of his little media gems on every Sooner locker (taken from NewsOK):

“That game from OU last year, that should have showed you that that product was nowhere near as good as the product that Baylor was putting on the field,” Oakman told the paper. “The execution, the players from each and every position … You could tell we were on a different level from OU. Just straight out.”

    • Zack says:

I hope they keep poking the bear. They did play much better than ou last year. But everyone there wants ou fans to quit talking about the past and the 7 national titles and however many conference titles (I lost count) but yet they want to talk about last year? That’s the past right?

      • JT says:

Yeah, and they seem to gloss right over their bowl game fiasco. “Just straight out,” says Oakman (whatever the heck that means). Go Knights!

  • Randy White says:

I can’t help myself, I love a mystery. QR posted a pic today on his FB page with his friends while wearing an OU football shirt. His mother also posted Sat morning wishing him luck and saying she loved the Sooners. The fact he was a no show at the game is puzzling! Feels like there’s more to the story than we know.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Most of you probably already saw this, but Austin Seibert tweeted that he will be in Norman for the Tennessee game. He’s coming in as Hunnicutt is leaving. NEXT MAN UP!
