Eric Striker made Sports Illustrated’s preseason All-American team. (SI)
This, from ESPN, is pretty horrible, IMO. But for some reason I suspect I’ll be in the minority on that.
Bit of an odd story with two former Sooners getting into it at Broncos training camp. (Denver Post)
Former OU asst. Brent Venables included on this list of DC’s most likely to get a HC job. Mike Stoops is not. (Fox Sports)

I guess if you’re Kansas then you really have nothing to lose.
Kansas Jayhawks new look this year. Super wild. Looks like something off Angry Bird. http://t.co/235XtbkjuV

The only reason Venables would possibly be a better HC candidate is the fact that Mike was already one, and wasn’t all that successful at it.
I don’t’ want Mike Stoops going anywhere.
Yeah, neither do I.
Venables is a good coach but he can’t hold a candle to Mike Stoops. And yes, Mike had limited success at Arizona but, in my opinion, it was more a result of the crappy athletic department than anything Mike did. He left it much better than he found it.
I think BV will make a better HC than a DC.
Good for Brennan!
I hope and believe that this is the year that Ryan Broyles finally gets his chance to show the greatness that he displayed while playing for us at Oklahoma. He’s had enough bad luck in tearing tendons and ligaments for two careers, and the NFL needs to see just how good the guy really is! Hang in there Ryan, this is your year to shine buddy!
Kendall looked pretty good running the ZR
Kendall has looked good with his legs but I’m reading that he struggles with the deep throws, I’m thinking it is because he was used to our faster receivers. 🙂
It’s time for Ryan to pick it up and have a solid, healthy year. Show some Sooner flash out there on the field.
I believe Venables is an excellent defensive coordinator and wish him well. But there is something special that seems to happen when the Stoops brothers team up to create defenses that are truly nasty! We are significantly better under Mike S. even using a team he didn’t recruit, and that was universally picked to be a weak spot last year and beset by injuries. I know one of the reasons for my excitement about this season is because I want to see more of our brand of extraordinary smash mouth defense that really comes from great schemes and hard work paired with the great talent. Seems like we lost a little bit of that edge for awhile but now I think it’s back!
Good Lord, Kansas
You mean “Angry Kansas”.
I say, I say, I say Foghorn Kansas boy! That bird has always reminded me of the Looney Tunes chicken.
….which is larger……the bird or weiss?
Mike doesn’t need to be a head coach. Making a million a year concentrating on just the defensive part of the game. Financially he has to be pretty doggone set. If he puts together a really good defense, and you know that will draw him mucho attention, that should sufficiently feed whatever ego he may have and desire to “make a name for himself”.
Not to mention, with some of the personal issues he has had over the years, being close to Bob would help with those, I’d think.
What personal issues are you referring to?
I thought they were public knowledge, but that said, I really don’t want to clutter the board up with that stuff. Mike likes alcohol, and Mike likes college girls. I’ll leave it at that.
If Admins want to delete this, I understand. Shouldn’t have mentioned it above, I guess, but like I said, I thought it was public knowledge.
Who doesn’t like college girls and booze. LOL!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an actual jay hawk if there is such a thing. That bird on the helmet looks like a very happy punk rock crow. Have to hand it to Kansas football, at least they’re trying.
Hahaha!!! You’re right, on both counts. It’s like a punk rock (rawk?) Heckle and Jeckle!
I think the hidden agenda is to get the opposing team laughing so hard they wont be able to play effectively.
I just watched the clip of the “brawl” between the cowboys and raiders in the joint practice (joint as in together not the other). Living in Cali I live and work amongst many raider fans, most of whom never played the game and have the football IQ of a mushroom. I’m convinced most raider fans are to football what the audience of a Jerry Springer show is to civilized society.
Was Thompson also playing some wide receiver in that scrimmage? There was a #1 who is wearing the yellow over-jersey at times down field (while it looked like Thompson wasn’t wearing a colored jersey when he was behind center). Looking at their roster, the only other #1 is a defensive back. I wonder if they’re intending on him being a change of pace ZR quarterback who can split out wide and make a defense unsure where he’s going to actually line up ????
Thanks for the Robin Williams tribute video. Can’t show that man enough respect.
It’s a little odd for me. For one, I know I’m gonna miss the guy, but it also seemed, to me, that he had already transcended any other comedy actor of our time. He was already a legend in my book, which is usually something reserved for hindsight, at least in my experience. You never really notice the genius of a person until you don’t have that person anymore. With Robin Williams, you couldn’t help but notice it. It slapped you in the face and made you take notice. R.I.P.
Very well said Toats. His passing almost put tears in my eyes, and that hardly ever happens. What a brilliant actor. Most people forget about the movie he played in called Awakenings. He was truly a master!
One of my favorites! In my opinion, one of De Niro’s best as well

Dang, Q Carter must have gotten upset when Clay made him look bad on the KOR drills. Throwing the ball at a guys head is bush league. Glad to see Clay stand up for himself and give Q some tonic.
Why Venables is on anybody’s head coaching list escapes me. The perception of him doesn’t match his reality and it never has. There are still Sooner fans who think he was great which was never the case.
Actually, I’ve seen a lot of hard data, comparisons, numbers crunched, that suggest he was way better at OU than he was ever givin’ credit for. The dude didn’t just forget how to coach, and though he was the DC, every defensive decision wasn’t his alone.
I don’t know what data that would be. What I see is that he only fielded one defense during his entire time here that cracked the top 50 and his defenses were routinely porous and unreliable. I also see that that has continued during his tenure at Clemson thus far. He’s not exactly facing offensive juggernauts every week in the ACC yet he get’s the same poor results and Mike already has us back in the top 20 in defense.
When mike was here the 1st time, from his 2nd year on our defense was top 10 in scoring D and and total defense. Soon as mike leaves, our rankings plummet.
Mike comes back, and our defense trends in the right direction again.
You dont really even have to look hard to see that mike is 10x the coordinator venables is.
I’ll try to find the study. And my argument isn’t really that Brent is better than Mike. I don’t believe that to be true. My argument is that Brent wasn’t nearly as bad as many OU fans made him out to be. When Mike started out at OU, we were going against some pretty crappy offenses, and weren’t playing very “fast” ourselves. Mike leaves, the Big 12 offenses explode, and OU starts playing faster. Sure, if you just look at the counting numbers like yards and points, there was a huge difference. But when you look at it in terms of efficiency, and you factor in better offenses, Venables doesn’t look nearly as bad. Again, I’ll go try to find the stats I saw a year or two ago. They did a nice job of laying out the case.
Sorry Jordan, you are awesome, but I love that poster.
R.I.P. to a classy lady, Lauren Bacall. Despite all her difficulties and heart break she lived out her full 90 years with dignity.
