FOOTBALL

While I’ve never been that big of a stats/advanced metrics guy, even I’m smart enough to know that Bill Connelly is an incredibly intelligent individual and knows a lot about CFB (even though I often disagree with him — not that he or anyone really cares — when it comes to assessing things OU related). So I’d strongly encourage you to give his OU preview a read. (SB Nation)

AD checks in at No. 4 on this list of the Top 10 ‘Freaks’ of the last decade. (Fox Sports)

Also, ICYMI, Trevor Knight is taking part this week in the Manning Passing Academy and at least one early review was pretty positive.

Enjoy.

BASKETBALL

Get to know OU newcomer, Khadeem Lattin. (Sooner Sports)

Good read on former Sooner Danielle Robinson who continues to make a name for herself in the WNBA. (ESPN)

RECRUITING

While neither was a surprise (both that OU missed on each and/or their respective choices), ICYMI Kahlil McKenzie committed to Tennessee last night and Andre James chose UCLA.

OTHER

So if we start a podcast here at TFB, I trust you all would do everything within your power to get us on this list, right? (Celebrity Net Worth)

Quick, not a single person rush to help this woman. (Deadspin)

Oh, hells no.

Looks creepy and the wife will want to see it because Ryan Reynolds is in it.

LOL, those guys at crff are a bunch of crack smokers! HAHA! Jordon are you even allowed to view that sight? We still banned right?

  • Jim says:

That was a great read from Bill Connelly. If you’re able to read it with an unbiased, non-Crimson glasses viewpoint, you cannot argue one point he makes. He addresses the strengths, the weaknesses, and the potentials that could reverse the strengths and weaknesses. It’s a great read and one OU fans should digest before kickoff. It will prevent aneurisms for those who might be expecting perfection.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I do like what Quigley has to say in comments. Very thoughtful, especially how rating services just total up points for stars rather than looking at balanced classes. What good does having a bunch of 5 star WRs do you if you don’t have enough recruits on the OL?

    • FeedtheMonster says:

I find it interesting how he mentioned the defense losing Nelson, but then completely fails to mention that they lost 6’6″ 340lb. Jordan Phillips at the nose tackle position. It comes off sounding like Phillips wasn’t injured, just lousy.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Yup. That’s the problem with being more of an advanced stats person. You miss out on details like this.

    • thebigdroot says:

“But unless some of the younger pieces — sophomore tackle Jordan Wade, maybe junior tackle Jordan Phillips — grow stronger against the run with maturity, last year’s strengths and weaknesses will be this year’s strengths and weaknesses.”
This part and proclaiming that losing one fumble would have cost the Sooners the game is what got me. There is no way to predict a changed outcome due to one turnover. Teams change from year to year and to proclaim that those struggles will continue just because “I said so” is a little much. I know we have issue that need to be fixed but these just didn’t sit right with me.

  • SoonerPhins says:

What a Cozy looking Hive. Microfiber makes for the best hives.

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I thought about posting a link to CRFF’s predictions about the FSU game to Tomahawk Nation, but a) I wouldn’t really wish that on anyone, and b) they really don’t deserve that kind of traffic, even if it’s a bunch of blustering Seminole fans.

  • Jared William Reininger says:

I really enjoyed that read about OSU. I mean it isn’t me being an “overly cocky sooner” by saying they need evidence. We will win Bedlam cause I just said that and the sooners are cocky….Top notch journalism.

  • Dana Rogers says:

Hmmm. Not sure exactly what BC meant when he finished the TK section with “Somebody’s going to have to.” Gotta be meaning either TK is going to put it in the air one way or the other or referencing OU’s lack of proven receiver’s. However, could be one of the more salient points in the article… and on the field this year.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      It’s in the Open Post.

    • HoustonChiver says:

Smart kid. Too many wasted scholarships on guys who can’t qualify academically.

    • Kody K. says:

I’m anxious for Danley’s decision. It’s starting to linger. Beginning to wonder if his postponements are about time constraints or something else. If I’m a lineman with NFL aspirations there is no way I pick MSU over OU. I wouldn’t even have to visit OU to make that decision.

  • SoonerBold says:

Fair article. New offensive and defensive systems implemented in the offseason so there was always going to be growing pains Seemed to get more disruptive as the year went on, no real answer/excuse for the UT game though, other than our guys thinking they could just trot out there and win? Bell did play poorly and the UT DL was all over him. Hoping Andrews is ready to roll and this is Smallwood’s year.

    • SoonerBold says:

Also, not sure how “lucky” it is to get a fumble when it’s your guy who is causing it…

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Because it’s a ball that’s pointy at both ends. Up to a certain point, turnover margin can be making your own luck. But when you put a ball on the turf, it can bounce all sorts of ways. Getting it very single time (including your own fumbles) is very lucky indeed.

    • soonersd says:

Losing Phillips and Nelson in the middle right before the UT game definitely played a roll in that loss. I’m not suggesting that with a good game plan that we couldn’t have walked out of the cotton bowl with a W but that was a really young linebacking core we put on the field that day who didn’t have the luxury of lining up behind our most disruptive DT.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

CRFF…HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I wondered if they had washed the sand off yet…guess not.

  • Josh says:

I’m not much on advanced statistics being used in football. I’ve been around the game my entire life, played in college, and coach TX High School football and sure we look at statistics when game planning for opponents but to look at it like some kind of football moneyball is going too far. Do you know how many “what ifs” you can apply to any football game… There were 9 fumbles and OU recovered them all.. Ok what about all the “what ifs” on the other 300+ plays during those games? A pass 3 inches too high gets tipped and picked instead of going for a TD, a receiver slips, a holding penalty is/isn’t called, on 3rd down your blitzing lb just steps over the line a split second too soon… you can play “what if” for forever and a day. In the end most football games come down to a handful of plays in critical situations. You win more of those plays and more of those situations you are most likely winning that game.

  • I like Boomer Sooner says:

Oh CRFF, talk about a shot in the dark.

On the Bill Connelly article: I enjoyed it. Although the way he forgot to mention the extent of our injury history which I felt merited a mention.

Other than that, I think whatever hesitations I have about our defense are assuaged by M. Stoops’s talent with DBs and the fact that now we actually have an offseason to install our system.

He has a valid point about our schedule (specifically TCU as a trap game), and the fact that last year’s strengths and weaknesses could be the same this year as well. But even then, I would take good defense and inconsistent offense over great offense and shaky defense every year.

  • CcrBoomer says:

I can’t stop laughing at the Espin bingo card! That is hilarious!

  • DCinAZ says:

I’ll go ahead and post the poke delusion here. They’re gonna blow us out you guys!

    2. The Cowboys will beat OU.

Not only is Oklahoma State going to beat OU, it is going to be a blowout. The Sooners are going to come into this game so cocky. They’ll be fired up for a sold-out home crowd, but it won’t be enough. Gundy finally pulls it together and coaches a miraculous 48-20 blowout.

    3. The Oklahoma State Cowboys will win the 2014 Big 12 Championship.

    • EasTex says:

Why would they even think that, much less post it?
Must be their diet. They should try a salad once in awhile and leave the turkey legs alone.

  • CRFF says:

I’m perfectly fine if you don’t ever post a link of ours here EVER. All it did was bring trolls, since it was posted by one.

I stand by my compliment that I openly gave you on Twitter a couple of days ago. You are a knowledgeable football guy.

But you also lack basic respect, and that’s disappointing. I don’t like what and how that went down after Bedlam, but I would never go to a Sooner site (or any site for that matter) to gloat after a gut wrenching defeat. I know what it feels like as a fan, and I respect that. Some of that is going to happen, I understand that, but as a representative of your former site you acted disrespectfully and refused to cooperate when asked NICELY to back off.

Unfortunate really, because you are a good writer and analyst.

Delete, block, whatever you do is fine. I won’t be back here again, which I’m sure will be ok with you.

    • Super K says:

CRFF – I apologize on behalf of our website for the derogatory nature of the post above. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to read this post today. I haven’t had a chance to speak to Jordan yet and I don’t know the details behind some of the things you referenced in your comment. But we (Jordan certainly included) try treat everyone with respect. I won’t try to speak on his behalf but as I said, on behalf of TFB I apologize and I will edit the post now. Please feel free to shoot us an email [email protected] – I’d be happy to talk to you or even give you a call and extend my apologies over the phone.

      • Sooner Ray says:

Super K, IMO, those guys over there are not owed an apology from you or anyone else. If they post an article on a public forum and someone logged in to dispute the article, that has nothing to do with you. Jordan wasn’t wrong for posting a link, IMO, for us to read because it involved OU. I’ve been to their site in the past and it is as trashy as anywhere I’ve ever been. They never would have said a word if Jordan’s name hadn’t been at the top of the post, it’s personal with them because he stood up to their trash talking last year. I was there when it went down and I was proud of the way JE stood up for the Sooner Nation.

        • FeedtheMonster says:

While I agree with you and believe every word of what you said, I love how classy this site is, and Super K is off the charts. Not Saying you are wrong or not classy yourself, also not saying anything against Jordan Esco, he’s awesome! Actually he’s the reason I found this site. I tend to be the kind to rub peoples’ noses in it after the smoke clears, but I am trying to be more like Super K. I just keep telling myself that we know that OUr program is superior, and they (opponents) know it too. That’s why they act like that. BOOMER!!!

          • Sooner Ray says:

Appreciate the reply, this place is like bible school compared to some other places, HAHA. That situation that reared it’s head today is from conversations that took place over the days and weeks leading up to bedlam and exploded afterwards. Most people that weren’t there during that time might assume it was an attack after the game, it wasn’t about rubbing their nose in it after the loss, it was more like asking them to take back all the vile things they had been saying about our program leading up to the game and when the sparks started things got out of control. Several people were involved and there was more than one conversation taking place over that several day period leading into the game. We won and Jordan ended up in a good place along with several posters who came with him so all is good. Apparently they haven’t gotten over it.
I replied to you in the open post about the “like button”, didn’t know if you were serious or not. If you were, the ^ symbol to the left of the word “reply” is a vote up or “like”. Just click on it and you have liked. The one voting down is seldom used.

          • FeedtheMonster says:

HA! I am a knucklehead. It’s right in front of me, even before the reply. I am obviously pretty new to this discus stuff, but I’m glad I made the other guy laugh. Whether it’s at me or with me, making people laugh is a good thing. Thanks for the tip. As far as the ongoing conversation with the (other) team’s fans, I think we all understand how infuriating they are. I know I do!

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Honestly, it just sounds as though these guys are just trying to haunt Mr. Esco. He shared a link to their site, which I wouldn’t have done if I were him, and then they act like he was out of line. It’s ridiculous, really.

    • Jordan Esco says:

“Delete, block, whatever you do is fine. I won’t be back here again, which I’m sure will be ok with you.”

      Yep, perfectly fine.

    • Deiter Gutboots says:

I should apologize. I was partially responsible for trolling CRFF this morning. After reading that “article” I felt compelled to troll Chokie State fans a little. It is Friday after all. Boomer!

  • Jordan Esco says:

Not that I suspect anyone truly cares, but I just went ahead and took down the CRFF link. Probably should have listened to the voices in my head initially and just never posted it for the reasons Eric already listed. Well, those and that apparently it’s still really, really sandy over there.

Feel free to carry on about your day 🙂

  • Super Keith says:

I’ve never been much of a metrics guy either, but sometimes there is some they work out. I guess that’s why I’ve never been a “traditional” baseball fan, because it seems all of the old school guys live and die by the numbers.
