Sooners News Daily 6.17.14

RIP, Tony Gwynn

FOOTBALL

However much stock you can put into a mid-June bowl projection, here is one with OU beating Bama in the Rose Bowl and facing Oregon for a national title. (Sporting News)3

Would of course always prefer to hang half a hundred on ’em, but I’m not gonna be greedy. I’d be just fine with a 38-13 win in Dallas this year. (DMN)

Here is another preseason All-Big 12 team. (Athlon)

Urban Meyer talkin’ out his a$$. I’ll maintain to my dying breath OU was the better team that night in Miami. Not to mention countless other teams, including any number of OU incarnations, that could just as legitimately lay claim to Meyer’s self-professed title. (NFL)

BASKETBALL

Isaiah Cousins talks about his recovery after being struck in the shoulder by a stray bullet last month. (Sooner Sports)

Ok. State is going to play Mizzou at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. (Twitter)

OTHER

I can totally understand why some dislike soccer but that aside, these reactions to yesterday’s game winner are beyond awesome. (Deadspin)

Those reactions are always awesome. I love the giant park celebrations.
I went to Pluckers (a big wing/sports bar) for the game and started the “I Believe” chant (thanks to a few beers) after the 2nd goal. Because half of the Austin population sucks and cannot remove their burnt-orange blinders, only half-3/4 of the restaurant chimed in. It’s the freakin’ USA team! Get the hell up and get excited!! It was still pretty cool though. The bar managers got so pumped they gave me a free meal. I’ll take it!
And I love Onikuno. That dude’s videos are incredible.

Not a huge Soccer fan but I always try to watch the USA games during the World Cup!

  • Zack says:

I just read the headline of that urban Meyer story and exited. Seriously without demarco and I believe another starter? And if football did a 7 game series or even a best of 3 that ou team would have figured it out and won.

  • Brad Warren says:

Anybody know which key 2014 signee just made it to campus? Soonerscoop teased w that.

    • Zack says:

Jordan just shared on twitter that it’s frison that he’s showing up online. I was thinking that’s who it was SS and them are good about teasing you with info that really isn’t “insider” info.

    • vargo05 says:

Looks like Kenyon Frison. He’s now in the list of people on the ou.edu search engine. Wasn’t there a day or two ago.

    • JR Kamm says:

      Let’s hope Frison.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Meyer needs to retire again, he has lost his mind.

  • AlvinMack55 says:

That 2001 Miami team was the best team I’ve seen play. Urban is a goon.

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

OU could have won that game, but didn’t. It really came down to them having Harvin, and us not having Murray.

That being said, I’m not a fan of second guessing titles based on what we think could have happened that day.

    • Zack says:

That’s a fair point no woulda coulda shoulda. But ou was held 40 points below their average for the year from a good but not great defense.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Our defense did a fairly good job of shutting down an offense that scorched the SEC that year. McCoy even intercepted St. Timmy!

        • Zack says:

Yeah we just couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down it was like watching a car wreck.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Anybody looking for a job. OU is hiring for a Director of Player Personnel.
M-F evenings and weekends as needed.(8-5 normal hours)
Just a couple of the many requirements: Must pass OU Tuberculosis Test policy, and valid drivers license not required, huh?

  • Roger Nixon says:

OU beating Bama in the Sugar and facing Oregon in the NC? I don’t know if the old ticker could take that much excitement! I’m willing to risk it.:)
Wait, Oregon couldn’t get the 2006 officials back on the field, right?

  • Zack says:

Get Gibson on the phone and let him know who QBU is. http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/85498/position-u-quarterbacks

  • Mr. Jones says:

To this day I still have nightmares of 4 stuffed goal line rushes in a row … *Jermaine Gresham waives to the OC begging for one throw*

    • BigJoeBrown says:

I remember all of us yelling “Don’t run it up the middle!” Because it seemed like the entire world of college football knew where the Sooners were running.

This…yes it was a woulda, coulda, shoulda, but that day it seemed like our entire offense changed from the one that we had seen all season.

      • FeedtheMonster says:

Wilson choked. I don’t think that is up for debate. Still would have loved to have Murray.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

After the game, Meyer said that the matchup that Florida was scared to death of was Gresham vs. whoever they put on him. He was as baffled as anyone that we didn’t target Gresham more, especially in the end zone.

    • HoustonChiver says:

Hell, I kept screaming at them to kick a field goal to see how Florida would’ve responded to losing the lead! Didn’t happen much for them all season

    • Sooner Ray says:

      He’s a Big O Boy.

    • hOUligan says:

Now THIS is who I want to talk about. An OL with a nasty streak who tweets out an offer by ‘THE Oklahoma Sooners’. And he has an invite to ‘The Opening’. Looks like Wariboko’s replacement is on deck. Get it done, Coach Bede.

  • j l says:

You guys see ESPN today and all their offensive position rankings since 2000?
OU #1 at QB, #2 at RB, #4 for o-line, #7 at WR.
We are pretty much ‘Everything-U’. Boomer!

  • Ryan says:

Love the website and I join the rest of the fans here in saying thank you for the amount of work you guys put in to bring us this information. Just spoke to a fellow Sooner fan and word from a Mizzou message board is that DGB is attempting an NCAA appeal to be allowed to transfer FBS this year and play immediately. The same post on the board said if he was given the waiver he would come to Oklahoma. Have you guys heard anything about this?
