Sooners News Daily 5.9.14

So what’s the over/under on articles from Texas people today on Louisville having three first round picks and how that equates to Charlie Strong being the next great Longhorns coach? I’m setting it at 77.5, any takers?

FOOTBALL

Sam Bradford came away as one of the “winners” in last night’s first round of the NFL Draft. (Yahoo)

I didn’t watch a single second of ESPN’s draft coverage (I roll with the NFL Network) and this (and the fact they still employ Chris Berman) tells me I made a wise decision. (Deadspin)

Nice story on Aaron Colvin and how his family helped support him thru his knee injury. (NewsOK)

Baylor or Oklahoma as Big 12 champs in 2014? (Athlon)

David Boren spoke on the football stadium renovations. Didn’t say much, but he did talk about it.* (Transcript)

*And am I alone in worrying they are focusing on the wrong things here? Which is not to say the stadium itself and what they’re reportedly planning is unwarranted or not needed. But how will a new pressbox help in recruiting? Or more suites? Or even more seats in the stadium, with or without chairbacks? A new weight room would be great and is needed, but they need to do WAY more than just that in terms of their facilities and keeping pace in the recruiting game. I’m reserving judgment until actual plans are revealed, but I just don’t hear the people that matter talking about the things I think should be more important than something like a new pressbox (for example).

Watching little johnny suck the bottom out of those water bottles last night was very entertaining.

Surprisingly, Berman wasn’t really too bad last night. I think he’s out of his element at the draft, so he’s not so annoying. The Manziel thing was so annoying though. Luckily the Heat game was on for me to watch in between picks.

Didn’t “watch” the draft, but would turn it on once every 30 minutes or so just to read the streaming banner of who selected whom. Whenever I did, it was the Miley Football show. If they weren’t showing his mug they were talking about him. Seriously, I do not understand the infatuation with the punk, I really don’t. I never wished for any player to get dropped out of the first round as badly as him. I’m just thankful he is now going to be so far away from Texas.

Gotta love Colvin, I wish him every success.

That piece on Bradford made it seem like it was all his fault he hasn’t been successful. Kind of hard to be great when defenses have a free run at the QB.

In other news, the Notre Dame Fightin’ Frenchies have a new recruiting video, guaranteed to wake up the echoes.

Gruden was having a love fest over Johnny all night. Got really annoying.

Watching him drop, especially to Cleveland, was very satisfying. Watching him get pummeled by the Ravens, Steelers, and Bengals will be even more so.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

It’s funny to hear commentators describe him as having only been an average QB to this point. He won Offensive ROY, and he’s never really had a decent healthy group of receivers, much less a great line to block for him.

      • EasTex says:

With me it’s not even about whether he can ball or not, it’s about him and who he is, his behavior and his family history. Wouldn’t want him in the same fox hole or watching my back.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Admittedly, I haven’t been keeping track so I’m quite certain there are many more out there already….but we’re officially off and running.

You make some good points Jordan (about the focus on the upcoming renovation/upgrades). However, it’s a tightrope walk when you start doing these kinds of things. On one hand you have to keep the fans happy, and on the other is the recruiting issues.

From what I’ve heard, our press box is the worst in the league, and that’s just crazy. We shouldn’t have the “worst” anything in the league, even if it doesn’t directly affect recruiting. So, sometimes it’s about maintenance.

I’m not sure they could raise the money they need to raise if they didn’t include things that will benefit the fans and the players, so if they had try to do just a pressbox upgrade, it probably would never happen.
