Sooners News Daily 11.11.14

Thank you to all of our veterans who have or are currently serving. And to the families who serve these brave men and women.

FOOTBALL

Let me be perfectly clear. This is in no way shape or form me saying I want Bob to go, because I DO NOT. That said, I very much do want him to stop constantly referring to past accomplishments. We all appreciate what he has done in years past, some more so than others but nevertheless it is appreciated. However, we, as a fan base (or at least this OU fan), want to hear about what you’re going to do, not what you’ve already done. We know what you’ve done.

If someone asks you what is wrong with the program, as something currently is, and your immediate response is to reference the end of the 2013 season and a Sugar Bowl game that took place about 10 months ago….well, frankly that’s getting pretty old.

And, like I said, it’s appreciated. But this is about the present and, more importantly, the future. That’s what I want to hear about. Thanks in advance.

ICYMI: Yesterday Stoops clarified his comments on OU fans following the Baylor game. (NewsOK)

Another ICYMI:

RECRUITING

Congrats to McKinley Whitfield who committed to Tulsa yesterday. (Twitter)

BASKETBALL

I’m having trouble thinking of anything more useless than a preseason CBB bracketology, but never the less here you go. OU is a No. 7 seed. (CBS Sports)

Good for them!

This is less than ideal.

What he hell part of his body is this guy even trying to work out?

This is outstanding.

Not sure what it says about me, but I laughed pretty hard at this.

Obviously the cross fit dude is training to be the anchor on a tug of war team.

  • Bill Duncan says:

11 am games are a direct result of Fox not wanting to compete with SEC games at 3:30 est. Fox and the schools may make more money, but the fans and local economy get the short end of the stick. This will have a negative effect on the game day experience.

    • Jed says:

…and, though anyone who’s ever watched needs not to be told, Fox is the worst sports channel in the history of forever. Camera work that could be surpassed by grade school students given their first cameras that day, Play announcers who perhaps were flown in from a country that has never seen football, color guys who might as well be dead, technical/producers who do nothing that does not detract from the viewing experience…
They succeed in making one pine for ESPN.
Group suicide is probably the best solution for them.

I have not been to a day game since 1985 and my last home game was in 2007 against Baylor which started at 5-ish. What is the ideal start time for the home games in the Fall? I figure the student clubs and such wouldn’t care for it as they do fundraiser lunches and the sort (did in the 70s and 80s). I would think the weather is better at 11. I’m now living on the west coast and I like the 0900 game time for us.

      • soonerschooner says:

The good old days, kickoffs were at 2:30, which is great for a cool fall afternoon, and people who drive up from Dallas or come from Tulsa don’t have to leave at 6 am to get there!

I don’t know what part of the body he’s trying to workout… but he just gave my funny bone a good workout.

  • boomersooner says:

Yes. Thank you to all our veterans. Freedom is something you can’t put a price tag on but it has been bought and paid for by many wonderful, brave people who fought for everything we are and everything we have. People who paid the ultimate price and those that made the ultimate sacrifice that are still with us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts

  • Jared William Reininger says:

Was just reading on facebook where ESPN said Bob Stoops should leave….the comments…

    Come to Miami!
We would love you at Michigan Bob!
    Please come to Florida.
    ETC
    ETC

Just wanted to point that out for anyone calling for Bob’s head.

    • CS says:

Yup, all said and done, winning consistently in the current landscape of cfb when the MissSt and the Baylors and the ASts are doing well, is hard business. I will take a coach who is 5 points away from a 1 loss season than risk losing him for an uncertain future. The Baylor game was embarrassing, no doubt, but that is going to light up a fire under Bob, I am certain. Will not be surprised if we turn back to look at this Baylor game as the fall that made us rise again. fingers crossed and encouraged like Bob, always.

      • Gary Robbins says:

Unless we get a good bowl game it doesn’t look like OU will beat a top 25 team this year. Feel like OU is better than that. I know they came close in a couple of games. Everybody agrees we have the athletes to be better-just something is out of sync.

        • CS says:

Just throwing it out there, but I will be very excited if we play LSU Auburn ND or MSU in a bowl game. We will see how it goes, but some matchup against a good team like that in the bowl game will be a very good consolation.

          • Stephen Dale says:

CS…………………have to disagree about having a tough postseason bowl opponent. THIS OU team really needs to stay home and bypass any bowl game; however, if it does ‘go bowling’, it needs to be the most minor of bowls that would have the weakest of teams available. Don’t think OU can beat a very good team right now. This group’s physical prowess is overshadowed by its frail psyche . Not a good combination against any team with a pulse.

          • Jared William Reininger says:

I don’t understand the logic here. I mean I agree, we are not playing well. We couldn’t have beat many teams last saturday but we should avoid a good team in a Bowl game because we might lose? I am sorry, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I would rather go into a Bowl game against the best team and lose than play the worst team and win. The only way they will earn their pride back is to go out and fight. Season isn’t over and they could be a 10 win team. We got our ass kicked by Baylor but doesn’t mean we will by every other team.

        • j l says:

WVU was top 25 until the loss to UT. Its not much, but its something.

        • Stephen Dale says:

OU finishes with TT, KU, OSwho———none of whom are anymore than a .500 type team. That said, TT is likely to hang 40-50 pts on OU Saturday so, NO, this OU team is very unlikely to sniff a top 25 finish. Easily the most disappointing team in Stoops regime. Not even close.

      • eastoksooner says:

Thought that was what last years loss to Baylor was supposed to do, and this years loss to TCU, and KState, and Baylor…….SMH

  • CKill1 says:

Is Whitfield someone we haven’t offered yet? PLEASE tell me he didn’t commit to Tulsa over OU. Please!

  • lovethemsooners says:

Yes I found it peculiar that Coach Stoops who has never been one to state the percentages of anything, knew that he had won 93% of his home games. He threw that number up several times during his press conference yesterday.

Also the expectations that “he” helped establish. While that is true, those “expectations” have been linked to the OU program for decades. He didn’t establish them, he just lived up to them……..and I’m hoping that he’s able to continue that trend in the future. I know I’m rooting for him.

  • JJsooner1 says:

That pee clip is priceless. Hilarious!!

  • Malicong says:

Very good for Whitfield, glad he is staying in state. I still think he would have been a good pickup for the Sooners.

  • James D-Space says:

Stoops is a great coach and I do NOT want to see him go…. I think he and the staff do have a bit of arrogance to them, but honestly… It’s a love & hate quality. To me, Coach & staff have gotten too comfortable. He used to have that gritty edge, that “as a matter of fact” attitude. We saw some of that return during the Alabama game, but it’s gone again.
Somehow Stoops, staff and players need to rediscover that gritty edge, punch you in the face and make you like mentality. Somehow!

    • boomersooner says:

Completely agree. When we were hot, everybody else hated stoops demeanor and attitude and we loved it. Now, I still love it, other teams fans make fun of it and some of the fan base hates it. I too want to beat teams into submission and then see the smirk and smart alek answers

  • SoonerCindy says:

I personally do not have a problem with the way that Stoops handled the presser yesterday. I think that talking about the consistancy of the the program for the last 16 years is a great way to put this one game in perspective. It is one game, one season. Bob Stoops has never let the Sooner Nation down as far as working to keep the team relevant and I don’t expect him to start now. Yes, I hated watching the game on Sat, but I have not lost faith in Stoops or any of the coaches. I believe the team and coaches will learn from their mistakes and improve.

  • ND52 says:

We all appreciate what he has done in years past, some more so than others but nevertheless it is appreciated.

Not sure if that’s the proper sentiment. Stoops is compensated more than all but a handful of coaches in his profession—-he’s simply doing (more like done) what he’s paid to do and that is win championships.

IMHO, Stoops has gone what we called “R.O.A.D” in the military: Retired On Active Duty. The end is in sight and he’s just mailing it in……………

  • Sean Post says:

OU is averaging 3 losses per year over the last 10 seasons (including this year). Is that acceptable? Honest question.

    • blaster1371 says:

Remember when many of us wanted more than “just” a conference title? I would like OU to win another one of those. I personally don’t think three losses per season is acceptable. The fact OU has been beaten at home four times in the last 16 home stands cannot be a good sign.

  • blaster1371 says:

I wish Heupel would just try calling plays from the sidelines. He went straight to the booth because that’s what Wilson did. Come to think of it, so did Long. Maybe that’s a Sroops thing. I’ve heard several coaches say there are just things you can tell about your players when you can look them in the eye and watch body language. Not to mention, it would seem beneficial to be able to talk to the Qb and WRs together. I don’t know, just seems like something’s need be given a shot.

  • CKill1 says:

We should all be SO proud that Stoops & OU have mad ESPiN’s “Bottom 10” for I believe the first time in school history! Granted, it’s as one of Hayden Fry’s deciples and couched that way, as most of his old coaching tree lost this past weekend, but still…
