Sooner Squad 17 Update – Game 1

Sooner Squad 17 (SS17) was a very hyped class for the Sooners. It featured some good talent and a lot of promise. What will be exciting is to see the development of these players during their time at OU. SS17 started out with 27 players. Although one is no longer on the team, the late additions of Dillon Faamatu and, for the purposes of this post, Jeff Badet made it 28. (Yes, I know Badet is not technically in the recruiting class).

Something that Oklahoma fans saw in Game 1 was the use of a lot of the roster. Most of the starters sat in the fourth quarter, with many coming out in the third or not even playing after half time. As our own Super K wrote this week, this does two big things for the players who came in:

1. It keeps them invested and rewards their efforts.

2. It allows the coaches to evaluate these players in a game.

Game 1 was a great time to see some of this young talent that was in the latest recruiting class. With that in mind, I wanted to take a look at what they actually did on Saturday: who started, who played, what did they do?

One measure is seeing how many actually played in the game.

SS17 – Game 1 Played

– Jeff Badet

– Robert Barnes

– Marquise Brown

– Tre Brown

– Grant Calcaterra

– Dillon Faamatau

– Addison Gumbs

– CeeDee Lamb (starter)

– Tyreece Lott

– Kenneth Murray (starter)

– Tre Norwood

– Trey Sermon

– Marcelias Sutton

That’s a lot of that class playing in Game 1. While some may not play regularly this season, many will. Out of those who did not play, some are healing from injuries and some are planning on continuing to develop through a redshirt year.

Another way to see the contributions of SS17 is through stats.

SS17 – Game 1 Stats

All stats courtesy of soonersports.com

– Jeff Badet: 4 rec, 91 yds, 119 APY

Those contributions accounted for:

– 42% of the carries

– 57% of the rushing yards

– 25% of the rushing touchdowns

– 44% of the receptions

– 41% of the receiving yards

– 50% of the receiving touchdowns

– 60% of the all purpose yards

– 28% of the total tackles

That’s a lot of contributions.

Will the number who play and the total stats be that high in games against opponents not named UTEP? Probably not. However, it’s fun to see the start of what looks to be promising OU careers for SS17.
