Sooner Magic! (UPDATED with JY’s post game thoughts)

Image from twitter.com/OU_Football

Congratulations Sooner fans! All the injuries and the ups and downs on offense and Coach Stoops still pulls off 10 wins. Big wins against OSU and Notre Dame! And an outside change at going to a BCS game. And let us tell y’all we we’re closer than folks think to being undefeated.

New coaches, new passion, new defensive scheme and young athletic players with many more that y’all haven’t seen!

Sooner Nation is happy tonight and the future bright 🙂

UPDATE – JY’s thoughts below:

Wow.  I mean how can you put it any other way?  Right on the opening snap, they take it to the house on a simple off tackle play to the left.  The wife immediately rises to her feet and walks out of the room, knowing this isn’t going to be pretty today. But wait!  A flag.  Then, somehow we hold them.  Then we held them again.  The offense couldn’t get it going until the 2nd quarter, and then it finally got untracked gashing them down the field.  Then Trevor gets hurt.  Has anyone had any more significant injuries this year?

1.  Trey Millard

2.  Corey Nelson

3.  Jordan Phillips

4.  Trevor Knight

5. Colvin playing injured

6. Damien Williams gone (not an injury but still)

Anyone who says that Bob stoops isn’t one heckuva coach is lying or doesn’t know what they’re talking about.  Mike Stoops kept those young guys scrapping and fighting all day.  Time after time, they stoned Oklahoma State on 1st down, forcing them to get off schedule and throw the ball earlier in the set of downs than they wanted to.  The guys played with that never give up, fight like hell and the outcome will take care of itself mentality you love to see.  Case in point was that Gabe Lynn gets juked out of his shoes, and Julian Wilson runs the guy down to force the 1st and goal.  Gabe showing great character steps in and helps out on two key stops to get the big goal line stand!  By the way, have Chuka Ndulue and Charles Tapper played better than they did today?  Tapper went off on that last drive, and Chuka was hitting Chelf all day long.

Today’s game really illustrated why you recruit young men with character.  Our guys fought, scrapped, scratched and took everything that was given to them.  While it wasn’t pretty, Oklahoma State only outgained us by 42 yards.  I texted K, and said that they kept letting us hang around early on.  When you do that against a well coached high character squad, you’re setting yourself up to lose.  That’s exactly what Oklahoma State did.  All week long, family members, friends and even guys I worked with were chirping about what the pukes were going to do to us.  I had a conversation last night right before I left work with one of my guys (an Oklahoma State fan).  I told him that they really expected to just roll their helmets out onto the field and get a win.  Our sooners were going to cower and quake under the mighty banner of that goofy looking cowboy thing they trot around…Really?!  I told em heck no man!  You guys are gonna get a fight tomorrow whether you like it or not, and our guys don’t roll over for anybody.  I admitted that Oklahoma State should win the game based on injuries and how hot they’ve been lately, but that we were gonna hit em in the mouth and not back down.

There were so many big plays that made this game for us…

The punt return by Saunders

The goal line stand tackle by Tapper and then Chuka

The catch by Moneycutt

The pick by Julian Wilson

The throw coming off the goal line to Shepard to switch field position

The catch and run by Brennan clay, and then the stiffarm down to the seven and get out of bounds to stop the clock.

The great throw by Blake Bell and the great job by Jalen Saunders securing the ball and getting his feet down to win it.

Then, to close it out, the D Pins their ears back and dominates on the last drive to force the turnover and get the insurance TD.

It would have been easy for Blake Bell to have been pouting all year after getting benched, but the kid just has a great attitude.  Comes of f the bench and wins the dang game.  Who can dispute that he just has Bedlam’s number?  Two years in a row that he comes up big with less than 30 seconds to go to beat Okie Lite.  Gundy’s going to see Blake Bell in his sleep.  There wasn’t a huge disparity in the statistics..

Okie Lite, 200 rushing, 200 throwing for 400 Total.

Sooners, 168 rushing, 193 throwing for 358 Total.

Desmond Roland’s 51 yard run, had it not occurred would have actually had the Sooners outgaining this mighty Oklahoma State offense.  While you can’t play what if, what you can do is just see how well this defense played today.  They were gritty and tough and all of the things that you want them to be.  Mike Stoops is building a defensive juggernaut.  With the experience these guys have gotten this year, adding Devante Bond at the jack position, getting Jordan Phillips back and hopefully getting Corey Nelson for one more year (long shot but it aint over), will have this defense playing absolutely lights out.  Then you get those young bucks another year in the offseason strength and conditioning program, and look out man.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens with the QB competition in the spring.  While you love Trevor as a player, he can’t seem to stay healthy.  We’ll see where it goes, but man oh man.  I am so glad that we shut them up today up in Stillwater.  I can’t stand orange of any shade.  Enjoy the rest of this chilly day Sooner Faithful, and make sure you soak up the warm rays of kicking that cowboy tail today!   Boomer!

On a business trip and was on the plane for the whole first 3 quarters. But caught the 4th quarter and I’m glad I did! BOOMER!

    • Indy_sooner says:

Best quarter you could’ve picked…lol. Outside the razzle dazzle magic on 3rd Q.
Ridiculous injuries, OL decimated, down to third person on depth, 3rd string QB and LB that forced us to field special teams folks on defense. This is NOT magic or chance folks. This was pure determination and effort from a great bunch of guys and winning or losing wouldn’t have changed that. What a way to go out!

  • godman says:

+That was a fun game to watch.

    • Super K says:

So glad I caught the 4th. Can’t wait to fly home on Monday and watch the whole game

      • godman says:

I missed the first half myself. I had to just catch the ESPN gamecast when I could. Where can I catch the whole game later?

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

How’s this for crappy…: When I thought that OSU had picked that Bell duck, I turned the t.v. off and effectively avoided all social media. I left and did a little Christmas shopping, scowled at everyone wearing an OSU shirt/hat. Came home, read this and the article on CCM…color me shocked…I missed one of the greatest endings in Bedlam history, but we got the win!!

  • Yost says:

Amazing game! One for the ages. Congrats to the sooners! Played hard through adversity. This has been a great season and gets me pumped for next season!

  • Jesse Wall says:

    Great win sooners !!!’ #BOOMER!!!

  • Ace says:

Most fun watching Oklahoma play in awhile, honestly. I was wrong though Ford would have his most carries but that’s just Clay. Ran very hard and Phillip Fulmer told me ” a mark of a good running back is he always falls forward.” Clay didn’t just fall he punished. A gutsy performance by all and great play calling. Sooner Magic! Is it too early to crack a beer? I think not.

    • soonerinks says:

Clay is just a workhorse. I swear he has a little of Demarco in him this year. I thought Demarco was one of the best short yardage backs I had seen and Clay has developed into an excellent short yardage back. Just so proud of this team. Their talent is not as good as in years past but they sure make up for it with heart. I also have to give it up to Blake, great 2nd half. And Big Game Bob finally made his long awaited return (think it was 4 for 4 on 4th down). Just a great day to be a Sooner and Ace I will join you in cracking a beer, Cheers!

    • JY says:

      keep it cold man!

    • JJsooner1 says:

Ace, its Bedlam Day. NEVER to early to crack a beer!!

  • JY says:

A simply unbelievable game. I knew that as we were driving there was no way that they would be able to stop us. I thought as the Okie Lite player almost picked the ball, that there’s no way it could end like this. Then it was incomplete. I literally thought that it would be the play that wasn’t made there that allowed us to win it. The difference is that our guys really EXPECT to win, and their guys hope to win. Watching how cool Brennan Clay was catching it, hitting the stiffarm after getting the first down, and then jumping out of bounds to give us 1st and goal…man. He just trots back to the huddle like it ain’t nothing. That’s just ice cold right there. Then, Blake Bell who hasn’t hit a corner route, ever, drops a dime on em to Jalen for the game. Just one of the more fun games I’ve watched in a long time. Our guys fought their butts off, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

    • soonerinks says:

My son and I were just talking before he hit that corner route that he had never even came close to completing a fade or corner and man he laid it in there. So glad for Blake, you love to see good things happen to those kids that do everything right.

    • boomersooner says:

man oh man what a game. i dont know, nor feel like lookin, but how many times did we throw the fade wide side this yr? seems they wanna go short side. the run off routes to the wide side seemed to create so much room to exploit one on one..see you guys kinda got me doin it now! love the leadership from the seniors. bob can say what he wants to media…you guys know my story…i loathed media..he wants lite and ut so bad..the sneer after taking the lead, the hug on bell during jalen’s interview, he was so proud of how hard they fought…as are we all. BOOMER

      • JY says:

We’re here to educate the masses my friend! This team has more heart than a lot of teams in recent memory. That’s what makes me more optimistic than most against Bama!

        • soonerinks says:

Heck, yes. Sooners will be the dog but I don’t mind, we seem to play at our best when everyone doubts us. This is a great opportunity and I think we will respond just fine. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Not predicting a win here, but sure ain’t scared to see our boys line up with’em.

          • JY says:

Me neither. There will be no other team in the country more engaged for this matchup. OUr guys will no doubt be ready to play.

  • TheRyanBroyles says:

Boomer Sooner! I’m always proud to say I played for the University of Oklahoma! Sooner Magic is real baby!

    • Super K says:

      Yes sir! Abracadabra suckers!

      • JY says:

If they could bottle cowboy tears, that would be my drink of choice tonight!

        • soonerinks says:

And we were proud that you wore the crimson and cream!

        • ctsooner says:

Great win and your assessment is dead on as usual. It was Sooner Magic and it always will be. Lil sis is just that. How many more ways can we whip her ass? Every year I hear the same damn thing about how pretty their ugly orange unis are (that’s why they try all black and any other color). They now have better players than OU. They have a better coaching staff and their stadium is so pretty (sits half of OU’s). They couldn’t afford AC in their indoor facility. Great job on those insurance policies TBum!
F those slow pokes as you just lost in a game I’ll forever call ‘The Frozen Meltdown in Stoolwater’

    • Cary Newman says:

      Ryan

You were the Best in my book. Thanks for being a great Sooner.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

Refreshing to hear a former Sooner giving props to the program! You’re all class, sir!

  • Cary Newman says:

What a shot in the arm to finish this recruiting class with. Boomer!!!

  • Drew Warner says:

What a wonderful effort today by the Sooners! They had the heart of a champion, up and down the board nobody quit fighting till the last whistle! Gotta feel good for Blake Bell, what a performance, what leadership and heart. The proudest I’ve been of an OU team for awhile! Boomer Sooner!

  • Adrian says:

You also forgot we had TWO lineman (starters) out today for key injuries! Man I have been on a roller coaster with Blake Bell but 10/16 and the 2 min. drill drive for the win, ill take it!

  • Drew Warner says:

Sugar Bowl Bound?! I’d love to see us play the Auburn/Missouri winner!

  • CoachStauder says:

JY you didn’t even mention the loss of Shead and Thompson! Go back and watch the game and you will see that OU rarely ran to Farniok’s side. When Thompson wasn’t playing I thought our offense would be lucky to get to the 20’s…just a gutsy, gutsy performance. I about threw our little foster baby into the ceiling fan…luckily i have 10 foot ceilings! lol

    • JY says:

My bad on that one. Nila has played so much I kind of consider him a starter, but I forgot about Thompson.

    • Indy_sooner says:

You’re right. I kept asking my self why Clay initially was running a pre-defined route, even if it was a pile on the RHS and never noticed that it was away from Farniok’s side. That being said, he got into rhythm in the 2nd half and I could’ve sworn the announcers singled out his much improved blocking.

  • Travis Tyra says:

All week long I listened to all the OSU fans and never said a thing but kept to myself knowing that all their hype was off of one game against a Baylor team who had been through a few tough big games coming into Stillwater. I knew this team had some Moxy and wouldn’t lay down. Proud Sooner fan and Alumni today

    • CoachStauder says:

My father in-law and wife are both huge OU fans (wife and I are alums), but my sister-in-law is a poke grad and most of the rest of my father in-law’s family are poke fans. I humbly said if I had to pick I would give OSU the edge by a few points. Didn’t say a whole lot else. However, was quietly confident about the game among all of my friends here in Arkansas. Was pumped with the outcome…will be a great Christmas get together.

      • Travis Tyra says:

My mom is a huge poke fan and talked to dad earlier, he said she hasn’t spoke haha. Got to love bedlam families. Take it easy on them coach lol

      • JJsooner1 says:

I’ll ditto that to all of my OSU fans. When pressed, I said “this is why they play the game”.Stayed humble but confident.

      • JY says:

Oh yeah. Been givin my sister grief all day(mom dropped her on her head or something) about the pukes!

  • CoachStauder says:

Yost, who were you rooting for today?

    • CoachStauder says:

I would assume/expect OSU, but was curious.

      • Yost says:

I rooted for OU! I was raised a sooner. I don’t know any of the guys on the OSU squad now either so it’s hard to root for them when playing OU. When they play anyone else I want them to win. Awesome game either way! Gotta love bedlam!

  • bjwalker82 says:

Did anyone else see that OSU cheerleader try to trip an OU player in the end zone or fans throwing rocks and snowballs at OU players and fans??

    • Yost says:

Yeah that’s never good to see. What’s funny as players we usually respected the other team win or lose. So to see fans react/act that way it’s pretty sad.

    • JJsooner1 says:

No I didn’t see that but that’s just a few terrible fans acting out of sorts, with no class. That includes the cowleader hag.

    • RedDog says:

yes…there are pictures and vids all over the net and on other football sites…plus the pelting of the OU players with snowballs…

    • bjwalker82 says:

I know it doesn’t represent all OSU fans, but this is pretty pathetic.

  • Isaac Wright says:

How will this win help our recruiting further down the road into NSD

    • JY says:

Definitely can’t hurt. You go on the road to win against K-State and O-State, and if we can win our bowl game, we’ll have a ton of momentum going into signing day and into next season.

  • JJsooner1 says:

OMGosh, what just happened??? Sooner Magic is all I can say. I was in line to take some serious grief at work. Thank you Jesus for some mercy!!

    I love this board.

Did I say I love this board??? Oh yeah I did:-)

  • Cary Newman says:

It’s apparent to me that, through out his Sooner career, Blake is much more comfortable and confident coming off the bench, either as the Belldozer or as the QB.

  • Jesse Wall says:

I hope this win helps to bring some recruiting dominos to fall our way!!

  • Indy_sooner says:

The pokes almost remind me of how we rolled into the cotton bowl to play Texas, expecting to just show up and win. They have terrific players on both sides but they seemed to let it all go to their heads*. Perhaps the Texas game was a turning point for us, on getting ahead with mental aspects of the game.
*Case in point, The bonehead play by their veteran CB (Gilbert) which, with his ejection, could’ve completely changed this game.

  • JJsooner1 says:

The day is surely complete. Texa$$ got beat by Baylor. What a good day for Sooner fans everywhere………:-)~~~~~~

  • Sonny Schovanec says:

Good stuff. You are right Brainiacts Stoops is a heck of a ball coach. Good too read a site that has staff that know good coaching when they see it not like one other site who had staff calling Coach Stoops an emperor w/o any guts. Cough Cough 24….. oh never mind. Appreciate the job you guys do.

  • AlexOU says:

Boomer baby!!! Clay…..is one tough & unsung hero of game. Some of most important yards of day. He exemplified the heart & chemistry of team.

  • Kdubracing says:

What a fun game to watch. Unbelievable. It was very nice to see OU on the winning side of a crazy game. Seems like we’re on the other side too often. Anyway, if they can get some health back and a solid defensive game plan, a win against Alabama (assuming that’s who we play) could be a program changer. I hesitate to use that phrase being it is OU, but it could be enormous based on the recent national perception of OU and the Big 12. I have faith this new staff will be able to prep for the bowl much better than in recent years, especially on D. While I’m a little skeptical of Heupel, the plan for OSU gives me hope. Just didn’t really like the on the fly decisions that were made. And to complete my ramble, the heart this team plays with can not be underestimated.

  • Jared William Reininger says:

Absolute insanity. I could barely believe what I saw most of that game. But I was so happy our guys not only fought but showed why you should always respect the ONE Oklahoma. And while I give props to Gundy for building a most consistent program.. I gotta say on a side note…the fans are still in the old days….act like you have been there before kind of thing. Never have I seen such poor sportsmanship and lack of class. Glad we came into their house and reminded them which team runs this state!

  • Allen P says:

When the earthquake struck that day friend of mine said damn an earthquake. I said “That’s no earthquake, that’s Bob tapping the keg of Sooner Magic”
