Scattershot Thoughts on Oklahoma Vs. K-State

Man I’m excited after the win last weekend.  Anytime you can win in the Cotton Bowl against Texas is a good thing.

–I think that this week the guys will be ready to go.  I get the sense that both coaches and players alike have learned from their mistakes and will keep getting better.

–Baker Mayfield will need to take what’s there against K-State.  The Wildcats historically play off coverage, so the screen game, short passes, & having to work your way down the field will be there.  If Baker takes what’s there, it’ll be a good day.

–The O Line needs to come out and dominate.  K State has one of the best rush defenses in the league, allowing 124 yards per game.  The guys up front will need to win the physical battle to open up the play action game.  If they can do that, I’d expect Dmitri Flowers and Mark Andrews to have big days.

–I’d expect Rodney Anderson to get more touches this week.  I think the Sooners got away from the run game a little too early last week, and 40 carries between him and Sermon seems about right.

–Unfortunately, I don’t expect a lot of blitzing this week.  When facing a QB run game heavy offense like K-State will have, it’s all about assignment football.  Slants, twists, & stunts against an option offense can leave you out of position and yield big plays in the run game.

–If Ertz is out and unable to go, we’ll see a heavy, heavy, heavy dose of QB run game.  Alex Delton can absolutely fly at the QB position, so the Sooners will need to be assignment sound, stay in their lanes, and make sure they control the line of scrimmage defensively.

–Big plays in the play action game to Schoen  are a possibility for them.  The safeties can’t get sucked up and beat over the top.  He can absolutely fly, and one mistake equals points.

–Oddsmakers have the Sooners winning this one 44-34, but I got a feeling the defense comes out trying to make a statement.  If Ertz can’t go, and the front 7 can shut down the run game, this one could get ugly without a few lucky big plays from the wildcats.  Not calling for a blowout here, but it could turn into one.

–I don’t think we’ll see the Baylor, Tulane, Iowa State version of the Sooners this week.  I just think they’ll come out with their hair on fire and get it done.

–I expect Trey Sermon to have a big game.

–I expect Dmitri Flowers to have a big game.

–I expect Du’Vonta Lampkin to have a big game.

My final score prediction is 42-24 Sooners.  I think that we may be getting ready to go on a run like what happened in 2015 when everyone wasn’t sure about how they’d end up.

—Finally, it’s almost Friday!   Boomer!
