Rodney Anderson Commits to Oklahoma

Image via ESPN

In the weekend Open Post we mentioned that we’d heard it could happen (here) and it did! Per Katy HS Football (@KatyFootball) RB Rodney Anderson has committed to the University of Oklahoma.

I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that OU has picked up another excellent RB. Coach Gundy has been bringing in the best for year and years! Congrats to Rodney, his family, the coaches and all of Sooner Nation!

I go on vacation for a week, and I come back to two big recruits giving the good guys a verbal. I need to go on vacation more often!

  • Super K says:

Starting to pick up some steam!

  • Sooner Ray says:

Good pickup here, got a little momentum going again.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Been a feel good week for OU and all us OU fans. What was that story about Texas athletes staying in Texas to play. Four of our six commits are from Texas. I also feel good about our chances with Barnett(og), Sunderland (safety), Haughton (safety), Wheeler (lb), P. Allen (ot), plus maybe Patterson,Whitfield, and Daniel (if they are offered. I also read that Josh Waribo’s little brother was in camp??

      • Sooner Ray says:

Good time for sure, this is why I’ve never really been worried. These things always come together, just not at the pace we would like to see. These Texas kids can see the quality of coaching and the quality of the programs and the wise one’s make the right choice. I think Texas not putting anyone through the draft is not helping them either. Not sure what’s going on at aTm but it’s turning some kids off. Haven’t heard any news about Josh’s brother.

      • Zack says:

I think the numbers is going to come down to whether a few players leave early or if anyone transfers.

        • Steve Cooke says:

Did the Marrs ship open for this last class or will be free for this years class like for an EE. I remember the OL Brown put us one over on signing day but i think that was taken care of earlier this year.

          • Zack says:

I would have to think we were right at the max before marrs decided to transfer could be wrong. With horky coming late I can’t imagine we would sign him without having space or knowing marrs was leaving.

          • Steve Cooke says:

I can’t believe I forgot about the Horkster!

        • Gary Robbins says:

How many rb’s does a qb need? OU has K. Ford, A. Ross, D. Smith, D. Brooks, L. Luna, J. Mixon, S. Perine, Rodney Anderson (2015) plus D. Flowers and A. Ripkowski. Jamabo, Ware, and Gray were high on OU’s list. Does OU take 1 more?

          • Ed Cotter says:

Rip is a SR, so he will be gone next year, so expect OU to be looking for an FB in this class.

          • Gary Robbins says:

That’s right didn’t OU offer someone out of Florida named Cox? Is he still on the board for us? I think he was a fullback maybe.

          • Ed Cotter says:

Not sure, but I think he has either eliminated OU, or has committed. Believe TFB has posted about Chandler Cox sometime this week.

          • Ed Cotter says:

            Cox has committed to Auburn.

      • Dana Rogers says:

Agree all but man – that Whitfield kid; Geez. Not sure how much longer he’s gonna stay under the radar….

  • Jared Tyra says:

I watched Katy play cibolo Steele some a couple years back in the playoffs. Rodney looked like the most explosive back on the roster and in the state when the coaches would sub him in for Taylor. Gundy always gets the job done on these guys, without fail it seems.

    • Super K says:

I’ve seen him a couple times as well and talked to coaches in this area (Houston) and everyone seems to be in agreement that he fits what OU is doing far more than TAMU

      • Jared Tyra says:

I am so glad that he does too! Maybe this will be OU’s big month for this recruiting class instead of scooping them all up late like the last few.

      • Shifty says:

        Reminds me of Clay…very versatile

        • blaster1371 says:

That’s a good comparison- one move then get upfield type. And as you pointed out can line up anywhere.

          • Shifty says:

Gundy seems to like this type of reliable back…not over the top but gets the job done…Chris Brown fits this category…good at following the blockers also

          • blaster1371 says:

Sure does. The high school players that just try to gain the edge quickly don’t seem to do,as well as those that set ups blocks and cut according to them. I thought Clay was especially good at this his senior year.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Watched the tape yesterday. Has great route picking abilities and his speed is legit. If he has a good blocker all bets are off with this young man.

      • DCinAZ says:

TAMU has done precisely squat with their backs as far as I can tell.

  • CoachStauder says:

Heard good things about the type of kid Rodney is as well. Always a good thing.

    • Super K says:

That’s excellent! And character and work ethic are right up there with talent as keys to success. Need to keep the great vibes going that OUs current team has.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Even on a tight year we’ve got no issues picking up elite RBs, not mentioning all the interest we get from the others . Not that we doubted Coach Gundy is a BOSS. Now if we could do this with LBs and Linemen…

    • Ed Cotter says:

Coach Gundy is the bomb. I would imagine that all the OU RBs hold Gundy in pretty high regard. He tells it like it is and expected total commitment in all duties of his RBs.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Great pick up. Welcome to Sooner Nation Rodney!

  • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

So, what about Soso Jamabo? Not like we’re hurting at RB.

    • Gary Robbins says:

My thoughts exactly, that’s what I was asking Zack in a question below.

      • Zack says:

Were loaded at running back but I think it’s possible we have 4 guys transfer after the next season or 2 depending on them graduating and getting open transfer opportunities. But if we just take one this year then maybe the rotation can work. Smith and brooks are not going to get much time.

        • Gary Robbins says:

Thanks man. Heck of a good situation for Gundy to be in.

          • Zack says:

Also Luna is not on sooner sports roster unless I missed that. But also I think if it is jamabo that wants to commit I don’t see any way we don’t take that commitment. He’s a relative of wariboko.

          • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I’m curious who is out there for next year. Perhaps take Rodney, call it a wrap, and move on to next year. Soso and Mixon aren’t the same, but they’re not as far apart as Mixon and Perine.

          • EasTex says:

There is always Anderson’s back up RB, Kyle Porter.
            /i can dream

          • Chase Korenek says:

            Plus Jamabo is nasty

  • j l says:

Is he the only back we take this class, or are we still pursuing jamabo?

  • James D-Space says:

    BOOM!

  • Chase Korenek says:

From his vids he reminds me a lot of Demarco. His somewhat upright running style and the way Katy lined him up in the slot/WR really looked a lot like what OU did with Murray.

    • DCinAZ says:

Yep. Not sure if he’s as ridiculously athletic as Murray but I’ll take all the Murray clones you can throw at me.

      • leatherneck1061 says:

Agreed. To this day I still torture myself with thoughts of what might have been if Murray had been healthy for the 08 NC. If only…..

    • EasTex says:

His balance and the way he slips tackles, kind of reminds me of Dorsett.

  • JJ says:

    Good stuff

    • EasTex says:

      Brevity. :}

      • JJ says:

Brevity… I am no FSU diatribe writer. Brevity, levity 2 of my faves

Would hope with camp there will be more news…

        • EasTex says:

I understand, but I am quite pleased with this one great news event.

          • J J says:

            As am I

          • EasTex says:

82 days and the incoming freshmen are already hitting campus, including Mixon, who last tweeted from the airport six hours ago.

          • J J says:

Which is about 75 days too long for this girl 🙁

          • EasTex says:

Look at it as the third trimester.

            /ducks

          • J J says:

            Nice…..
            Referring of course to /ducks
I can’t punch from this far away, I’d hit a construction pylon

          • EasTex says:

Okay, then, like a kidney stone…this too shall pass.

          • J J says:

            So glad to reconnect

          • EasTex says:

Glad to see your nic once again.

          • J J says:

I wondered about you after the exodus…

          • EasTex says:

            I appreciate that.
The negativity was just too much for me and thought it best to just leave.
Here, there is a definite positive vibe, which is to my liking.

          • J J says:

            I understand!

          • Gary Robbins says:

You and a lot of other posters have been doing this recruit following for a long time. Here’s something I don’t get. Must be glass of water thing. If it’s half way up on the glass are you a half way full type person or a half empty type?
            This is 247 Sports.
            OU has a #32 ranking with a 89.33 average. Includes our #1 kicker with a 2-star rating.
            Clemson with a #2 ranking and a 88.04 average
Miss. State with a #6 ranking and a 86.94 average
Fla. State with a #9 ranking and a 89.03 average
            Tenn. with a #10 ranking and a 87.94 average
            That’s it I need another beer-maybe 2 more lol.
            Which is the most important?

          • EasTex says:

I’m definitely a half full kinda guy.
Don’t pretend to understand their formula or the “advanced metrics.”

          • blaster1371 says:

Advanced metrics is the way Alcott at the BON (burnt orange nation) explains how much Texass really has not sucked over the last half decade.

          • EasTex says:

Exactly, which is why I don’t understand them.

          • EasTex says:

Also, this is my 58th year of following OU football. The things I have seen over the years with respect to recruiting have conditioned me to not get too high or low. I am not only pleased with the status of OU football as it stands, I am confident 2014 will be an excellent season and with a few breaks and bounces, a superlative season.

          • soonermusic says:

nicely said, et (not too high or low…)

          • Zack says:

It’s a combination of both from what I’ve gathered. I don’t know rivals formula at all but I’m sure it’s similar. The ranking is based on your total commits grades. So average is important but so is the number of recruits. Right now our average is 6th best on rivals.

          • blaster1371 says:

Wins are most important. To be serious, The quantity of pledged recruits figures into those rankings as well. For example, a team with six commits, three four star and three three star would rank lower than a team with say 12 commits with two four star guys and the rest being three star.

          • Sonny Schovanec says:

            # 32 ranking with 89.33 rating?? Wtf is all these rankings and averages your talking about?? Does that help you get in the Playoff or something, Who ranks these kids? So Adoree Jackson is a 99 and Mixon is a 98 that makes Adoree .1 better? What is crazy is there are multiple paid sites that people pay their salaries to put this stuff out. About 16.17 year old HS kids. After reading through the blogs after Wariboka de commuted you would have thought OU had dropped their football program. It blows me away how people get wrapped up and pay for scoop on decisions 16, 17 year old kids are making. Heck there are recruiting gurus who make a living ranking these HS kids. Thank you Football Brainiacts for supplying some sanity to an insane process

          • Gary Robbins says:

Yeah I don’t know why people pay for these services either. Being born in the forties I’m too tight or stubborn to pay for services. Besides as I’ve said before it would cut down on my “Happy Hour” money.

        • EasTex says:

Ah yes, the verbose FSU fans.
They thought it was funny that their player gave freshman RB Clay a concussion, then whined like a child when their WR got knocked out of the game on a legal hit.
If I never have to interact with them again, it will be soon.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      Lip licking good.

  • Ed Cotter says:

LOL, Can we call him Tim UnSettle. He spurns OU, loves Tennessee, now has a new #1 favorite in Clemson. Anyone else hope that OU is done recruiting this kid?

    • EasTex says:

It’s tough being a kid, even more so for some.
If he really is that indecisive then I’m with you and good luck to the young man.

    • Zack says:

I would still like to know what happened when he dropped us. But yeah I think this has red flag all over it. He might want to commit somewhere soon before all the major programs back off.

    • Sooner Ray says:

He may be under the impression that he has qualified for DIVA status.

  • Eddie and Amber says:

Gundy comes through again. Welcome aboard Anderson!

  • Super Keith says:

This commit will end up being really big in a couple of years. Cale Gundy is underrated as a recruiter!

  • EasTex says:

The legacy of great RBs began at least 62 years ago. May it never end.

    • soonermusic says:

Just got around to watching this. thanks for the post, EasTex. It’s great, and there are many other sensational ones that they left out. I can never see Joe Washington too many times, tho’. ..

      • EasTex says:

Yeah, to include all the other Sooner RBs that made significant contributions would have made this video 3 hours long.
Joe W., my favorite ankle breaker of all-time.

    • DCinAZ says:

Jesus……….what a tradition we have here. Forgot how smooth Spencer Tillman was as a runner.

      • EasTex says:

There have been so many memorable RBs.
One RB I was always fond of was David Overstreet. From tiny Big Sandy, Tx he was in the same back field with too many great players to list from 1977-80. Sadly he died far too young just three years after leaving OU in a fiery car accident near Tyler after his first season with the Dolphins.
This video from the 1980 game at Boulder is memorable, it had Switzer and Fairbanks facing each other, 124 points scored, with OU setting a new NCAA record with 875 yards total offense. Overstreet had over 280 on 18 carries and Sterling Shepherd’s Uncle Darrell having a big game. I wonder how many here at TFB ever saw J.C. Watts and Buster Rhymes play?

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Safe to say we won’t have to worry about RBs for a long time.

  • Robert E. Mann II says:

OU will be unstoppable this year…..
