Recruit Reaction Notes

Wanted to start posting some notes on the reaction of recruits that made it to Norman this weekend. We will continue to update this post or add updates to tomorrow’s Open Post:

Jordan Parker: Haven’t spoken to him since last week but as you all know by now, he committed to OU. This was a big grab for the Sooners and an indication that Kerry Cooks is hell bent on creating a lot of future competition in the secondary.

Baylen Buchanan: Another DB that made it to campus this weekend is Baylen Buchanan. Buchanan told me that he “loves” the visit. I asked him if he had a chance to spend time with coach Cooks and Viney and he said, “yes…I love those guys”. After exchanging some messages with him and talking to sources, it sounds like Buchanan is really considering a commitment. When I asked Buchanan if a commitment was possible, he laughed and said he didn’t know…he definitely didn’t rule it out.

I have checked to see if OU would consider taking one more DB and I have been told that they would for the right player. Buchanan, I’m told, could take the final spot but I suspect it would need to happen sooner rather than later because there are still a couple other DBs considering OU and it sounds like they won’t be able to stretch the numbers much more, if at all.

Blake Williams: For those of you who don’t know 2016 TE/H-Back/ATH Blake Williams (Mustang, OK) get familiar with his name. He is an elite jumbo athlete at 6’3 225 lbs. His change of direction and straight line speed are extremely rare for a guy that size. He was battling a medical issue the past couple years which kept him off the field (he has now recovered). Blake camped at North Carolina this past summer and without film he was given an offer based on his camp performance alone! He’s that kind of athlete.

OU has begun recruiting Williams and coach Gundy went by and saw him live this past Friday. Williams made the trip to Norman for yesterday’s game. I spoke to Blake and his mother. Blake said the trip was great and he “loved every moment of it”. He and his mother tell me that the OU coaches have requested his transcripts which is usually a sign of a forthcoming offer. They also said that coach Gundy told them he would be speaking to Blake over the phone early this coming week.

Boom! So K would Buchanan be the “right” player?

    • Super K says:

Yes, according to my source. Though I’m not convinced he can play outside CB. Looks like he could be a very good inside CB. He also has the pedigree so I suspect he has the smarts to turn into a cover safety as well.

Where there any OLine recruits at the game? We need to get some more talent on the interior in my opinion. What do we do at Center next year?

  • Swanny says:

Thanks for the leg work K!

  • Boom says:

I hope Blake receives an offer and curious when he turn 18? K, do you or your team members see him as a TE or on the D side.

    • Super K says:

Everyone is recruiting him as an H-back/TE…including Alabama (they like him a lot). I think he would be great there but could definitely see him flipping over to the defensive side of the ball. When you have the kind of COD that he does, there are so many possibilities.

      • Boom says:

Good news and hopefully he will work on his blocking. What do you project his size to be in college.

    • BoomerDave says:

According to family members, OU sees him as a TE/inside WR, much like Andrews.

  • Scott says:

Hey K thanks for the info , Did Brandon Burton have a good visit?

  • Swanny says:

Usually these hype videos are relatively unbiased… this weeks, not so much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvc9LypHPUo&feature=youtu.be

Aw, geez, another 11:00 game. That’s 9:00 here in Cali. Well, the one good thing is that you don’t have to wait all day to see the game. Is saxeT the home team? Appears so.

Yes, that JT never gets old, and of course my personal list of others that never gets old (in no particular order):
        1) Case McCoy getting flipped heels over head (even though the refs blew the call by calling a penalty);
        2) Marcus DuPree running down the middle of the field for a TD (i was in the endzone, student section when he ran down to the OU endzone) – utter pandemonium; i literally thought all the students were going to explode;
        3) Superman
        4) Fleming’s forced fumble and return for a TD;
        5) #26 breaking the UT player’s ankles as he goes the length of the field
(I have more, but I will stop here …. suggest to the TFB folks that we have a “What are your fondest memories of the RRS?” post)

Gawd, I’m giddy with excitement for Saturday, and I just made the 7 hour drive back to St. Louis from Norman. It’s a great day to be a SOONER!!!! (btw, i lost my voice I was yelling so much at the game)

    • Scott says:

Man was Kenny Stills really good and he had a attitude verse texsa

    • cheezyq says:

LOL, those highlights make it look like we’ve been paying North Texas all this time instead of UT.

  • kt-raida says:

TFB putting in work on a sunday!

  • Sooner 76 says:

With all these CB commits, any chance that OU will play JUCO CB Maurice Chandler as a safety? He is the same size as most of our safeties.

    • JR says:

No, he will come in and play corner. Will give young DB’s time to adjust instead of being thrown in the fire.

  • BoomerDave says:

I like the large number and the quality of CB’s that we are getting commitments from. Let me ask those of you that are more knowledgeable than I about this? Would it be advisable to put 4-5 CB types on the field at the same time to combat the 4-5 WR looks we are seeing? Perhaps some of the larger CBs could be hybrid S/CB and cover the slot WRs and help in run support. Feasible?

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

No it would make it easy for teams to run the ball on us.

    • eastoksooner says:

BoomerDave I was thinking about this yesterday. I was wondering why nobody has tried that. Why not have 4-5 CB types on the field with a couple of them being bigger, help in run support but still be able to hang with the WR’s these spread offenses are throwing out there. Just might work.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

4-5 might be too many, but I’d like to play 3, and have two safeties like Parker and Thomas. I think that would be a better lineup against the true spread teams. Let Parker cover when needed. Use Thomas in run support with the LB’s. Would love to see us keep getting PJ playing time, so that formation might be an option later this year.

    • MrBigsby says:

Didn’t we try that against WV a few years ago, resulting in Tavon Austin clowning Mike’s D all day long?

  • John Garner says:

No. 10 in the new poll. Awesome! Maybe that will help some recruits make up their mind. Hey, Paul Finebaum, I think we’re relevant!

  • guest says:

Is Farniok the new permanent starter at LG? It looked like the WV LBs didn’t know what to do with him and just by default decided to go through the motions of making general contact with him.

  • Stephen Dale says:

Blake Williams must be a true Sooner to be : he has already shrunk 1 ” and he’s not even been offered !

    • Brian Cloar says:

Stephen i live in mustang the kid lived down the street from me! he is an incredible talent! If it wasnt for his medical issues would be recruited by everybody! I am sure he is concerened about how ou uses there tight ends as of now not much! I am hoping that changes because i would love to see the kid in crimson and cream!

      • Stephen Dale says:

its because of his medical issues that questions about his health and durability exist. hopefully his doctors approve of his college football participation. it isn’t worth it if any questions exist about a catastrophic potentiality, however…….

  • KJ1123 says:

Good to see JM on the Greenbay sideline today.

  • JJSoona says:

Did I mention that texa$$ still sucks!!.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

NO, but now that you mention it …. I agree with you. Please don’t stop ‘mentioning’. Some entities embody the definition of suckage better than others … UT has the corner on this market.

  • Randy says:

Tyrie Cleveland narrowing list… I hope we make that cut.. Big time playmaker.

  • EasTex says:

    Thank You, Hambone.

    • Kuzi says:

Well done. Did anyone else notice that at the end of the Ahmad Thomas interception, one of the West Virginia offensive linemen tries to spear Thomas on the ground and misses. It was a really dangerous play, and it looks like he may have hurt himself to some degree. Didn’t see that live.

  • Boomer4life says:

    texsa sucks! BOOMER!

  • Sooner Ray says:

Antonneous Clayton, 4star de, tweeted we’re in his top 5. Haven’t heard anything about this kid. Been offered by about every big program.

  • Boomer4life says:

    Yep…

  • ellisbr says:

Maybe it’s already been discussed but has anyone heard anything about Drapers visit?
