– Frank Shannon has an upper body injury but nothing else has been confirmed
We will post notes, quotes and other information as we get it once the post game press conference begins. Stay Tuned.
Coach Bob Stoops
– Proud of the teams ability to answer when it was really needed. Offense made some critical plays and the third down conversion percentage was important. Meanwhile Tech was less than 50% on 3rd downs.
– Got to be more alert on those special teams plays.
– Trey Millard is out with ACL tear. HUGE NEWS
– Lost our momentum in the 3rd but loved the resilience of the team and their ability to regain the momentum
– The big plays sparked the offense.
– Talked about Blake getting help today and said when he gets help “he’s a good thrower”. And said that the more Blake plays the more he’s going to be able to buy some time and continue to make plays like he did on the last minute dump off pass
– Ran the ball well and said that when the other team can’t stop it…you’ve got to keep running it.
– Talked about how the need for multiple backs showed up today. Talked about how the RBs complimented each other.
– Complimented the two true Freshman (Dom and Jordan Evans). Said they did an excellent job in a big game.
– Said he’s unsure about what’s the situation with Frank Shannon
– Re-emphasized the resilience of this team.
– Also complimented the fans, student body and band…they helped “charge the players energy”.
– Feels good about how the defense is playing as a team and feels they will be ready for Baylor.
– Said Brannon Green did a nice job out of the bigger sets once Trey Millard went down.
– But Trey is versatile and not many teams have someone like him
– Said that they did remind the players what happened last time there was a weather delay.
– Admitted that the injuries are starting to hurt. Two captains down now. Said he feels good about the team but its obvious Coach Stoops knows the injuries are starting to mount
Coach Mike Stoops
– Said he was generally pleased with the play but said the TE (Amarro) is a tough matchup, especially for two true freshmen.
– Said he anticipates Frank being back but they will know more Monday
– Said it doesn’t get tougher than to play with 3 freshman at the LB spot.
– We weren’t perfect by any stretch but made plays when needed to.
– 2nd half the TE releases hurt as they came through the zones
– Missed a lot of traps on the TE – on the quick throws
– Pressure was pretty good. Decent pressure and pretty consistent when we need it.
– Said the first half defensive play was critical, holding them to only 7 points. But eventually if you give them enough opportunities its going to hurt you.
– We have to play together as a team, the offense helped by keeping the ball away. Have to play all 3 phases and defense carried offense at times and offense carried the defense at times.
– When you play a team like Tech you have to get turnovers and while we controlled the run game there was definitely some slopping tackling. Said things could have definitely been cleaner.
– Said Texas Tech is a very foolproof offense, they are one of the best offenses in the country. Said he was happy that we were able to get critical turnovers and sacks to help win
Coach Josh Heupel
– Talked about Blake Bell making some critical plays on 3rd down.
– Said he felt when Blake was given the opportunity to throw the ball he played well.
– Disappointed that they didn’t start faster. Said they missed a lot of holes in the run game and that gets them behind the chains. Said they’ve got to clean things up and start faster, especially against a team like Baylor coming up.
– Emphasized how well Blake read the defense and got the ball to the player with leverage
– WRs are doing better at one-on-ones
– Said he told the team to enjoy the win tonight but know that there is still a lot that we can be better at.
– On the loss of Trey Millard, “he’s the best in the country at doing what he does…we’re going to miss him absolutely…other guys are going to have to step up”.
– Felt like Damien played his best game of the season
Blake Bell
– Offense did a great job “hardly anyone touched me all night”. Complimented his WRs for getting open.
– Said that the things they’ve been practicing are starting to show up more and more on the field.
– Talked about the need for the offense to continue pushing through even when things aren’t going their way…offense was in bad shape early but the resilience paid off.
– Said that he didn’t feel any different tonight. Said that its really more a combination of things; “team chemistry”.
– On Millard’s injury “its a bad deal”
– Says he feels the offense is moving in the right direction…running the ball…getting the big plays in the passing game was great but there are still plays to be had out there.
– Said he doesn’t pay attention to the outside criticisms. Said all he can do is come in everyday and get better.
– Was really excited to see all the fans still there despite the weather.
Eric Striker
– Turnovers happened because they did what they were supposed to do…running around, having fun, getting your hands on the ball.
– Said he felt the defense did pretty good but definitely could have done better.
– Said the loss of Trey is big “he’s a leader…someone that a lot of people on this team look up to…including me”
– On Jordan Evans play “Jordan stepped up today…I thought he did a great job…he had a good practice all week”
– Said he felt like he was wreaking havoc, “that’s my job”
– Said he’s very excited about the Baylor game. Said “I’ve had that one in the back of my mind for a long time…a long time…I can’t wait!”
– “We respect all our opponents but this (win) definitely gives us a little boost and hopefully we can dominate two Thursdays from now”
