OU Stat of the Day (sort of): I compiled the 22 score predictions from yesterday’s “Prediction Thread” and here are the results:
47 – Avg. OU score
15 – Avg. Tenn score
32 – Avg. spread (only prediction (see below) didn’t have OU beating the spread)
55 – Highest OU score (Stats, Mr. Jones, & thebigroot)
34 – Lowest OU score (SoonerBred)
21 – Highest Tenn. score (Swanny)
10 – Lowest Tenn. score (Gary Robbins, thebigroot, Jon Nakata, & JT)
45 – Biggest Spread (thebigroot)
17 – Smallest Spread (SoonerBred)
I will preface this statement with the following: 1. Dont log in over there and 2: be respectful. That said, I am on the VOLNATION forum reading their game thread. Pretty entertaining.
Some of this play calling is still really conservative. Not sure why we are settling for middle runs on 1st and 2nd down putting a lot of pressure on 3rd.
Don’t get too excited…. They relied on two VERY UNLIKELY plays and a penalty to score. They will wear down in the second half and our run game will take over…. Just breath 😉
yeah, we need to get the run game working… it’s putting a lot of pressure on the passing game. don’t think we’re there yet to completely rely on this WR group.
Ross is not a RB he is a return man/track star. He has straight line speed. Zero power, pad level, or wiggle. I like the kid but let him return kicks/end around.
VOl fans are SCREAMING about that (what fumble?) right now. Also, apparently, OU is not good enough for the Playoff (they can tell after 1 half), and our O-Line holds on every down. Even when our Defense is on the field.
Classy of Jones, obvious slant by that reporter. Sheesh, at best it was a disputable fumble, and the ruling on the field was down (whistled down I might add).
Defense wins championships, and our D is real good. I don’t think it’s entirely the OL’s fault, Heupel is not calling a very good game. OT’s are struggling a little bit. All in all this is exactly what we needs. I think our guys were reading a few too many headlines. Reach down and grab your balls, sound off like you have a pair. Now man up!
I thought our D line looked top notch….Ford is looking good….TK has had some pressure on him….Throws looking good….I’m hoping we come out and score right after half
I’m very impressed with Blake Bells hands….Velcro hands…..His play so far this year has exceeded my expectations….I was hoping he would excel….So far, I like what I see.
Aaaah!
The comforting sensation of a 75 yard drive for a TD to start the second half.
Think I’m ready for some Braum’s Strawberry/Banana frozen yogurt, now.
Checkin’ in. That play was open about 3 times in the first half. Glad he kept it. They sure are loading up to stop the run. Some issues, but nothing serious. The good guys are nicely in front. Looks like another 300 yard passing game against an SEC team!
This is what you do. If there loading the box, use that genuine dual-threat qb we’ve all been boasting about – and find more ways to bring in the TIGHT END!
I really don’t like shepherd returning punts. All we need is him to get injured on special teams for us to have another oh-crap-we-lost-ryan-broyls-and-now-can’t-play kind of season.
What about a sluggo or something? It seems like for years now our route combos have been very lackluster. I’m pretty sure when landry was here we just ran all verts
Evans save 6 with his tackle and created a 10 point + swing with his pass deflection. We dominated the first half more than the score indicated and the second half has been much closer than the score indicates.
no. no. you are still not allowed to lead with your helmet. As in Lowering your helmet when you tackle in the head or shoulder area. If your head is down it has to be above the knees and lower than the shoulders.
They loaded up on the box. We didn’t take advantage of the screen passes and adapt to stretching them out. You could see the gains every time we faked the inside run, or got AJ Johnson to bite
great point. they’ll harp on the youth…haha and the red zone to’s but they didn’t get 4 yds per play…only had a few big ones and our penalties kept how many drives alive?
Exceptional work by Striker and the Defensive line. Solid performance Bell, Thomas and Wilson. Lot’s of work with the offense remains on the throwing game and slant routes but receivers have to CATCH the ball
Not to take anything away from shep and Neal, but right now our options are small, smaller, and smallest. Really missing a deep threat on the outside IMO
I will say this is the first game I was disappointed in our receivers. Someone besides shep, Neal and bell have to make plays for us. And heupel needs to give smallwood, mead and Todd some time to come on and help us out.
Yeah it looks like we are holding back and not calling aggressive plays. We should have thrown more on first down. Hopefully ford is ok because we are not the same without him.
On the with The deflection off Young”s face ask, he rounded his route. He makes a strong cut and the defender keeps going upfield and he has separation. I think Norvell, said it’s been a problem with the whole WR group.
They’re talented we need a couple of them to step up. No quick or mead appearances. Heupel needs to get away from the heavy looks if the team is loading up to stop the run. It didn’t hurt us tonight but it could in the next couple games.
Wait I’m confused wasn’t everyone complaining that we needed one more threat and now 3 show up and we need more again …. no offense … but typical OU fans. It wasn’t a great game from what I saw in highlights and stats, unfortunately wasn’t able to watch the game in its entirety, but Tennessee was also a huge step up in competition from Tulsa and LA Tech. They will get better as the season goes on.
I think it’s fair to say that people wanted a bigger receiver to step up and make plays and that hasn’t happened yet. Our receivers not named Shepard were not able to consistently get separation from the defenders but…No offense…you’d only know that if you watched the game.
Fair enough… but the fact is they haven’t stepped up if they had they’d be playing. And I’m in the process of watching now so don’t worry I’ll see what everyone saw. Also,Everyone knew coming into the season. That the WR group was a question mark for this offense so why is that you act surprised or disappointed in the lack of a real deep threat or multiple receiving options? Like I said originally I’m simply confused as to why people say they want one thing, get it and then demand more.
IMO shep didn’t have as big of a night as were used to seeing, tennesse was keying on him and they have the athletes to match up but he still played well. What I mean is having 4 receiving threats at all times with bell or flowers being one or two of those so you can still be multiple and run or throw. I want to see us go 5 or 6 deep at receiver because that’s what it is going to take to win.
Ya I did expect to see flowers used more this game I think he will be used more going forward. Hopefully. And you do have a valid point on needing more depth in order to compete, especially if one of the 2 main threats went down.
Yes and Neal and shep both had a couple plays where it looked like that could have happened. Shep has great awareness and saw a potential big hit, decided to t-Rex arm a pass to avoid that big hit. I’m sure bob will look at the film and say where is my f-ing h back?
Tennessee will be a scary team in a couple years, they have a total of 6 penalties I believe on the year so they are well coached and the talent is headed to Knoxville.
That’s what I’ve been getting flamed for saying here all week. I’d bracket Shep and let the others be the ones to best me. Woods leaving the game early took away a potential WR to be that other guy.
Neal is coming on. Kj young needs more time but looks solid creating space down field I don’t like him on swings or screens yet. Would like to see quick a lot more and I believe flowers will be a mismatch for most teams because of how smooth he is and the fact he lines up as a fullback. And bell looked good tonight much quicker/faster than expected.
Never said they were “lethal” actually far from it, that’s my whole point. I was one that expected the d to carry this team until about mid season. And I’ve now completed the game BTW. I would blame a lot more on knight not going through progressions and the play calling being sub par at best tonight. Hopefully it gets better, if not we lose 2 games this year. I’m also hoping the lack of creativity is due to the coaches holding back for the future and not because the team isn’t able to open all the way up. We should see next week with WVU. Who has givenOU a good game the last couple of years.
I watched on the espn app. What exactly happened? I saw him walk off the field following the pick 6, which he obviously wasn’t even on the field for so I was extremely confused.
Only saw stats … I’m in nowhere PA… and a couple highlights but overall looked like a sloppy win . But still a win, lots of room to improve in the run game still from what I saw on the stat tracker.
This is true. I think this was a test and they stayed vanilla to not show a whole lot. But at some point they just have to open up the play book and let the offense overwhelm our opponents.
There’s a huge difference between being vanilla and not recognizing what the defense gives you. We had single coverage most of the night with them loading the box. Shepard by himself could have burned them for some long TDs. Granted, TK’s downfield accuracy hasn’t been very good this year. I expect that will improve and I sure would have loved to see him throw a few more for practice.
Phillips is a sophomore. He will be back next yr. I don’t see Tapper leaving early, just hasn’t been playing football competitively for long enough. Striker, probably.
It sure was! OU blew them out at home and was in a fight at their house! the end result was the same but a play here or there and the outcome could have been different.
I was just a wee primary oocyte in 1945. LOL!
Evans did a great job in his coverage.
Sure proud of Wilson for being so alert in grabbing the deflection and taking it to the house.
We may over analyze some stuff, the defense outside a couple penalties was consistent. It took a bit but the ground game got going against a talented LB, passing is was ok, no turnover aside from the freak interception before the half.
My questions: KJ Young hasn’t been consistent, so do we see him starting next week? Ford injury? Sanchez injury? Where is K and J. Esco?
Was it not KJ that tipped the pass up that lead to an interception? And yes referring to the inability to get open like Shepard and Neal. We’ve already got two shifty smaller receivers, why not use a big WR like Smallwood, Todd, Mead, to add some versatility to the offense like Bell did late in the 2nd.
Think it might have been broken up. He’s got some of the best hands on the team. But yeah I agree with you. I’d rather have Todd or mead out there and bring shep back in the slot
I was hoping for it this week, but no such luck. Maybe the freshman aren’t where they need to be. I know Smallwood isn’t catching the ball consistently but something definitely needs to change
Our OL is overrated. They didn’t need to stack 8 in the box; their front 3 managed to get through easily enough.
I thought Heupel took a big leap forward in play calling vs Bama. I thought he took 2 steps back tonight. They continued to stack the line and left 3 behind for coverage, and we…run? WTF? Maybe it’s just me but I was always taught to test their secondary when they load up against the run like that and take what they give you. We did not do that often enough.
Our defense is awesome. Their QB will be hurting by tomorrow. It’s a win, can’t be unhappy about that. I just think we could have played better than we did.
Ehh, I wouldn’t say OUr o-line is over-rated, Tennessee was a smaller group with quickness. Just like we used to OUr advantage in the Sugar Bowl to beat Bama. Alabama has 5-star recruits across the O-line that will be playing on Sundays but we used our quickness to beat them. Tennessee did the same against us tonight. I think we should have just kept pounding them to wear them down.
I agree 100% on Heupel!! Could he not see that the DEs were crashing down inside all night which would dictate TK pulling on the zone read but it looked as if he was told to hand it off anyway! it took us a quarter or so before we decided to stretch the field, wow!!! we had 1 on 1 match ups to throw to way before then!!! Where is the offense we ran against Bama. We are plain vanilla!!!
Quick post-game thoughts. We need some more WR’s to step up. We need to run the ball more consistently on 2nd down and not be so dang predictable (although I do give credit to the Tennessee defense tonight). I really thought with our size advantage we should have pounded them more to wear them down. OUr defense is LEGIT. Striker absolutely took the game over at one point. It is a bit discouraging though that when we do not send pressure, it seemed a bit easy to get 10 yards a play on us. 3rd down conversions. We. Sucked. That HAS to improve…but they also need to be manageable 3rd downs.
the one i wish(this is hindsight) he would’ve done different was the all out blitz. i wish we woulda showed it but dropped out. great call on the screen beat it. otherwise, yikes. i would not wanna be an opposing qb
I think on that particular play, he was just testing Tenn to see HOW dominant our D really was. They made a decent play, and I don’t remember Mike sending “all out” again after that…
But you’re totally right, would not want to be a QB against these dudes..NASTY
On the ESPiN website, the vols lost because of too many turnovers. Never mind the fact that we also gave them the ball twice. These people just can’t help themselves.
We need to improve converting 3rd downs. I don’t believe we converted a single 3rd down in the second half. I thought Adam Shead got really roughed up. Not his best game
VANILLA offense the whole 2nd half. We ran into 8 and 9 man boxes all night without one real play action. Offensive staff knows they’ve got the run of games that will determine if we’re in the playoff coming up. WVU, TCU, Texas. Excited to see them open up the playbook next week.
1. TK doesn’t consistently make his reads. Makes up his mind pre-snap too often.
2. Any doubt about Julian Wilson at corner should be gone.
3. IMO the offense was still kept fairly simple.
4. Sanchez still can’t tackle, but has great coverage skills. Props to him for playing through injury.
5. More touches for Ford and then Perine. I expect Ross to be used in a different role from now on. Maybe 6-7 touches a game.
6. Pass rush is elite.
1. how many starts? 2. yup 3. yup 4. check 5. Ross in different role is interesting. He has good hands and is good in space and OU needs more receivers….hmmmm…and would like to see Daniel Brooks get some touches with his quickness. D is looking very strong vs rush, too.
Wasn’t doubting whether Knight could get better. Was just stating observation. You are right. He is young and still learning. More game experience the better he’ll get. Ditto about DBrooks.
Oh, definitely. Was just agreeing with your overall assessment and adding a bit. Pretty excited about the progress Knight is already showing. 300 yd game and he has few options at WR. Next season with these WRs having another year of experience and with DGB in the mix will be monster!!
Stoops vs SEC:
5-4 all-time:
– all 4 losses were in bowl games
– in 3 of the losses OU was the lower ranked team (so never upset),
– and the other(25-27 vs. Ole Miss) was Stoops’ first season (not sure who was favored)
3-0 (undefeated) in the regular season
18-3 combined against Mizzou and A&M when they were in the BigXII.
Well, considering that those losses (for OU) are largely to blame for (starting) the SEC Propaganda Monster that we all know and love today… I suppose it should be left up to us to fell the beast…
you don’t have to go rain on my parade of anti propaganda do ya? i wish we had everybody healthy for them games. woulda been a good run for us and we would be getting seig heiled on espn
See, I don’t mind Coach Lou. Its nice of the SPiN to give a guy with age-onset mental disabilities a job. Anyway, its not like I can understand what he is saying when he hates us anyway… I just assume he is slobber-parroting what Reece and Mark say.
Was listening to an interview with Lee Corso recently. ESPN has also kept him hired while his having suffered a stroke some years ago. He doesn’t talk during the week to be able to do game day. Their not all bad. just 98% SEC homered!
no..the Ohio state blowout loss to Florida in 06 was when the sec became “the SEC”…No one gave Florida a chance going into that game and then they blew Ohio State out and everyone started saying “wow the SEC must just be really good”…OU didn’t help the propaganda but they certainly didn’t start it
I thought for the most part we played well tonight. We still have some things to work on and with some of these guys getting more playing time especially the backups we’ll be fine.
Game notes up at Soonersports. Some good stuff.
For example:
*Stoops is 24-7 (.774) overall against current SEC teams. Oklahoma is 107-46-8 (.689) all-time against current SEC members.
• Oklahoma owns a 13-0 home record against current members
of the SEC under Bob Stoops: Alabama (1-0), Missouri (4-0), Tennessee
(1-0) and Texas A&M (7-0).
To God be the glory always ! Great win by the team , couldn't more proud of these men ! Needa tackle better regardless of the shoulder !— Zack Sanchez (@ZSanchez15) September 14, 2014
He had a great game and will give him a bit of a pass as he played with a lot of heart for being hurt. He will do himself a favor using better form tackling and less shoulder hits.
Takeaways:
1. Defense….yup.
2. Offense…sometimes
3.Team good enough to play like crap and still win decisively…yup.
4. Julian Wilson is legit…yup (although he needs a new celebration…just running away from everyone looks kind of weird and he probably missed his chance to get another pick because of it).
5. Perine is one helluva grave digger.
I’ve got to say that when a defense goes from dominating to not so much dominating but still extremely opportunistic when the offense hits the concessions for almost an entire half, this is a very good thing IMO.
Watched the game with a garage full of Husker fans and they all oohed & aahhed over our defense. Heard lots of comments like “That D-line is downright scary” & “Damn, that big-ass cornerback is legit!” Made for a fun evening of football.
– Very, very satisfied with this NASTY defense, especially considering they were on the field almost the entire second half it seems. First time in years I’m almost more excited to watch Defense than offense.
– Offense needs to do a better job at being consistent and running some clock. Not sure why our O-line is supposed to be sooo good, yet we couldnt sustain hardly any second half drives, against a weaker opponent.
– Perine needs many more touches. Ford and He should split darn near evenly, but I think Perine is the type of back that can, and will, close out games in the 4th for us.
– Ross is just a speed back who can outrun almost anyone, but struggles with ball carrier vision (reading blocks and finding holes), and shoudn’t be in the backfield as an RB. Coaches need to put his talent and speed elsewhere.
– Play calling took a step back this week compared to past few games, dating back to Sugar Bowl.. Heupel has got to continue to step it up if we expect to win championships..
– Overall, Proud of our team, and am actually PLEASED we have things to work on. Don’t PEAK until the end! BOOMER!
The offense was very poor in the 2nd half heupel needed to call more first down pass plays. I somewhat agree about ross but they need to do misdirection type plays with him so he can find that hold on the backside. I don’t think ford and perine should split 50/50 though, ford is the best back on the team and should get the most carries.
I have no issues with your assessment.. Nice! Agree about the misdirection plays if Ross is in. Ford is the best all around too, agreed; but Perine is the beast that should arise and punish, every 4th quarter.
Playcalling must be a bitch, lol. Seems so simple to all of us watching during the game, but so hard for the actual playcallers to figure out during game!! I remember myself always bitching about K. Wilson too!
I didn’t like Kevin Wilson when he had AD and would just line up and run 30+ times. Peterson was obviously a beast and could handle running vs 8 in the box but that’s all he faced thanks to Wilson.
You’re right about perine it looked like they finally figured that out on that last drive where he got a couple big runs but they went away from him again at the end and that drive stalled. If ross keeps getting those 1 yard runs then they’re gonna have to give his touches to perine and I would be more than ok with that. And as bad as Tennessee has been that may be the most talented front 7 we face this year.
Yea, you could certainly tell their front was a cut above Tulsa’s and La Tech.. Possibly most talented we’ll face though? I was unaware of that, and thats great news!
They may not be the best front 7 but the big 12 doesn’t really have stifling defenses so I don’t know who else besides texas will have the talent on defense to slow the run game and man up on our receivers. We have to use our other receiving threats like flowers and one of the big freshmen.
Oh, and how about that ROCKY CALMUS!!!??? That was a badass moment! He certainly enjoyed himself. Happy to see him get one more run through the tunnel. Linebacker coach anyone?
Once again I’m gonna give it up to q Hayes. He played about as good as I’ve seen him play. He and striker were all over the field. Ndulue is having a great season I think everyone is worried about Phillips, tapper, striker and Grissom and leave chuka one on one.
I spent some time going through the comments at volnation’s game thread and I have got to say most of the people on that thread are absurd.
They not only were saying unkind things about Stoops, OU fans, the Schooner or our players, they were complaining about the officiating w/o mentioning or realizing it was a sec crew.
The howling and moaning over the pick six was hysterical, they mostly blamed their coaches for the play call. They claimed that abc/espn was in love with OU and hated them and the sec.
All in all, if the people on that board are a representative sample of Vol fans in general I sincerely hope they never have major success in FBS football again.
HA! Did they watch the same broadcast as we did?
The commentary for OU was actually better than I was anticipating, but they certainly didnt fail to mention (over and over) how Tenn was losing because of their youth.. failing to recognize publicly (until late in the 4th) that OU is damn near just as young.
Seems Herby has a thing for Striker though! ha, but then again, dont we all!!? 😉
Going by what I saw and they commented on, it must have been, but clearly they have filters that are only issued to them.
Oh, they hated Striker and the announcers.
See, those are the fans from any team I can’t tolerate. When I see an outstanding player from another team and that’s usually when I see them play OU, I have to respect that. I may not like what they are doing to my team but I have to respect the talent and work they out in.
Believe me, there was no individual praise for OU players, only contempt. Some grudgingly claimed the OU defense was legit. Any variation from the group think that the Vols are the greatest EVAH was quickly shouted down and accused of trolling.
I noticed that they said that OU was 1-2 in national championships…not that I really want to dredge up bad memories, but OU has played in 4 total NCs since Stoops arrived. Did they forget 2004, does it not count because USC vacated the win, or did ABC/ESPN only want to highlight the losses to SEC teams in the NC?
Do they realize they only got called for one penalty? And that so called fumble was dependent on the call on the field, had they ruled a fumble I don’t think the booth would have overturned.
They were claiming OU was holding on every play.
Some were actually calling for Knight to be injured.
They did go over the Perine alleged fumble from every nonsensical angle, including tin foil theory about the officiating.
There was a lot of holding but from both sides. The umpire and ref were as about as consistent at no calls as I can remember from a crew I’ve seen in the past.
Broadcast crew showed so much love and kindness to their kiddies (made them all sound like pups) without mentioning the youth on OU’s team.
i grew up in the middle of this. memphis is the epicenter of sec crap. i got out at a good time, before this perceived awesomeness run(its perpetuated by an infatuation for a few coaches and somehow snowballed into a whole conference wanting to cede from the union). anyhoo, even when i was a kid and these teams were just alright, they would argue with each other about what 5 things could have gone differently in all 5 of their losses for them to win a title and you just realize that college football in the south is a whole different animal. the delusions these people have make the 60’s and woodstock look like sunday school and i’m just guessing cause i wasn’t even alive then
Just curious if its just me, this actually just popped in my head.. but is Striker a damn good comparison with Roy Williams? Think Roy could have played Striker’s positions nearly the same and succeeded as well? When I just visualized Striker, with his bravado and talent, and ferociousness… an image of Roy also popped into my head.
In the time Roy Williams played yes. He would likely have to cover a TE or RB when in man and he could have just out quick the tackles back then. Today? Not sure. His lack of coverage skills were exposed in the NFL. Today’s tackles are more athletic than 13 years ago. Striker is still a “tweener” but he seems to be powerful than his size would indicate and his coverage skills are proving to be better than most linebackers.
You’re right, Roy’s cover skills def were exposed in NFL. To me, Striker looks better all around, but I’m wondering if thats just because I’m looking through the window of the present time. But when I truly think back about Roy, he was damn dominant in college, even in coverage. So yea, tough one for me..
Very dominate. That’s why it’s so difficult to compare players from different eras. The style of play has changed, the size of players in certain positions has changed and what they were asked to do is obviously different. I would still take a Roy Williams for my team no matter the decade….. Striker would be there too. I’d find a way to get them in a position for success.
They just seem so similar in size and athleticism, if Roy played in this Defense, wondering if Mike would use him the same as Striker, or left him at safety. Then again, Striker is a rare, rare combination of talents. So he’d probably win out..
Talent wise; yeah bout spot on, but thinkin a different mind set (Williams was surgical w/ Stricker being a destroyer) as to approach between the two … Still – close, dang close.
True. West Virginia is going to be a dog fight. That offense will be the best we see until Baylor. In a way I’m glad the Tennessee game wasn’t a blow out; showed this team still has a lot to do to get better and needs to get better.
Apparently ford will miss next week but there’s a reason it’s not posted here, it hasn’t been verified and could be an overreaction that the pay sites ran with. I will wait til I hear stoops or tfb say he is out.
Striker has to be the best conditioned player for OU. That guys motor was running in fifth gear ALL GAME . I don’t recall him coming off the field either.
On the defense:
1. Man, I was really stoked at the pressure we were able to get defensively all game!
2. Seemed like every single player on the defense had some sort of amazing play. The game notes on soonersports.com highlighted pretty much every defensive player.
3. How awesome would it be if Sanchez got at least 1 INT every game this year?
4. I loved how Striker wants to be relentless on every play – he never gives up on getting to the football, whether it’s attacking the QB or blowing up a RB/WR at the end of the play. He also wraps up when he tackles!
5. How many times did “Striker” and “220 pounds” get mentioned?
6. Any doubts of whether Julian Wilson could play corner effectively are probably erased…or put on hold.
On the offense:
1. We had some small creases that the RBs (especially Ford) turned into pretty nice gains.
2. TK had some great passes, and then others that were not so great. That deep pass to Shepard towards the end of the 2nd quarter had some great touch.
3. It takes at least 3 people to slow down Perine once he gets to full speed.
4. Offensively the second half was disappointing. I’ll let the experts determine whether that was due to playcalling, execution, defensive skill/scheme, or all of the above.
5. How many times did “Trevor Knight” and “escapability” get mentioned?
6. Bell had some really awesome catches and still has that Belldozer power to break tackles. While we need more receivers to step up, Bell is shaping up to be a good go-to big receiver.
I found this article interesting, since Saban wasn’t listed high on “coaches I’d want my kid to play for.”
Read on game:
-D has potential to be Great, and then….
-O is inconsistent
-TK is streaky as heck as earlier post stated
-TK had poor 2d half and stunk on 3rd down passing
-TK may not be only QB if Mayfield is reinstated by NCAA
-O line desperately needs to figure out how to combat D line Angles thru gaps. Had 50 lbs per man on them and could not get consistent run game push
-Ford and Perine separated themselves from Ross, partially
-With good blocking we can have a good run game because of the stable of quality RBs
-Young is a legitimate WR as a freshman; Neal finally showed some of his jitterbug elusiveness. Why not have him return punts too? Shepherd is at risk if only returner just like Demarco
-Special teams are improved despite punt hitting Parker for theoretical fumble
–
I know we want a perfect win: by that, I mean, perfect play. It’s not going to happen. In business, you have to keep going. OU will be fine. It’s not always easy.
Agree with SamSooner. We just won a game against a quality opponent by 24pts. If a couple plays go differently in Tenn favor we win by 10-17. If a couple of plays go differently in our favor it’s a 31-38pt win. All in all, I’ll take the 24 pt victory in a game that we were in complete control of from the beginning and be happy to do so.
This defense is special. If Sanchez learns to tackle properly, we have two very special corners in him and Wilson. Hayes is really coming on as an impact player. The front seven is just big, strong, fast, and mean. A little more fine tuning in pass coverage and this D can carry us to a championship.
I’m a little more concerned about the offense. Trevor has real bright spots and then seems to get off track a bit at times. I don’t know whether he has trouble seeing over/through the O line or if receivers aren’t exactly where he expects them to be. Our O line was out numbered most of the night so I can’t jump on them for leaving guys unblocked, I have to question why we didn’t have a better set of plays ready to defeat the box loading. This is how we will be attacked by upcoming opponents so a solution better be in the works.
The receivers looked to be improved but we still lack that big deep threat. Bell showed he is capable of getting down field and making tough catches, that was nice to see.
Overall I feel good about the conference match ups. There will be some tough games but I expect improvement every week so I like our chances.
Yeah I’m really starting to LOVE Julian Wilson. I don’t know how exactly his speed compares to Sanchez, but his ability to be physical and lay the wood even on bigger WR’s is freaking awesome. As for that poor Tulsa WR, I’m pretty sure even his grandkids will be born dizzy.
Team wins by 24, fans are still ragging on problems. Some see this as annoying, I effing LOVE it. Would rather have humble fans than Tech or Baylol fans (y’know, the ones that think they have the greatest team ever fielded because their team beat a FBS team by 60). Seriously, imo, we’re fans of the best team in the Big XII by far, but we’re still looking at ways to improve. Last season, I visited the Baylol fan page and they were so cocky it made me hate Baylol. The fans here, for the most part, may not expect perfection, but they at least know that there is always room for improvement.

And here in Denver!
Boomer Sooner! Clap! Clap! Clap Clap Clap!
Watching in Mississippi!!
I feel like stealing someone’s moonshine! BOOMER!
Zero hour folks. Let’s kick their dixie lovin asses.
OU Stat of the Day (sort of): I compiled the 22 score predictions from yesterday’s “Prediction Thread” and here are the results:
47 – Avg. OU score
15 – Avg. Tenn score
32 – Avg. spread (only prediction (see below) didn’t have OU beating the spread)
55 – Highest OU score (Stats, Mr. Jones, & thebigroot)
34 – Lowest OU score (SoonerBred)
21 – Highest Tenn. score (Swanny)
10 – Lowest Tenn. score (Gary Robbins, thebigroot, Jon Nakata, & JT)
45 – Biggest Spread (thebigroot)
17 – Smallest Spread (SoonerBred)
I’d say we’re fairly optimistic. Boomer Sooner!
BOOMER!
SOONER!!!
Come on clean fast start!
No wood tonight, that’s ok. A traditional a$$ whoopin is better than an alternate a$$ whoopin anyway,
Those home jerseys had white helmets. I’d prefer to have as much crimson out there as possible. I mean creamsicle?
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU!
Yeah Baby!
Let’s go!!!!!
BOOM!
Time to punch it down their throat.
Bell!!!
O line needs to get a better push
MONEY!
Defense needs another 3 and out.
STRIKER!!
YES!!
BOOM!!
Great play by Hayes
KJ stepping up.
BOOM!!!
TD!
obvious that they gave up on running already Mike Stoops recognizes it right off ,, sends the zone blitz ,, Boom
O….O…O… OU!
Awesome
What kinda motor you runnin in that Ford anyway??
Twin turbo ecoboost 3.5L V6.
Nah, there’s no exoboost in this one. It’s all power.
Herbstreet, sheesh, quit making excuses for them
Ten points in ten minutes…I’ll take 60 points.
BOOM!!!
I bet he doesn’t run the next one out.
SACK!
BOOM!!!
Chuka Chuka Chuka Chuka. Toot Toot!
HELTER SKELTER!!!!
Shut up HERB! Quit making excuses, gosh
HE HAS TO. He’s on Contract for ESPiN. He can’t say anything nice about OU.
I mean, he’s mentioned “young” for UT and “veteran” for OU like a dozen times apiece already.
A football truth: the more you hit the QB, the worse his passing gets.
Sa-MA-jay…Sa-MA-jay…Sa-MA-jay…
why does the run block all of the sudden look like a few years ago…??
watching espn uk online ,, commercials are very entertaining ,, in a weird way 🙂
SHEP!
atta boy shep
Shep the MAN!
Shep almost broke that one
Ah, he tripped on the spin move. Too bad.
Our oline is like arbys. We have the meat. Run north and south heupel.
We’ve got six blocking eight. We need to hit them wide and deep to get some of those guys out of there.
Diamond. FLowers, Rip, Samaje…. I bet that D Line gets tired real fast….
same formation same motion end around
Their LBs are pretty good i must say
They are quick.
they will slow down…
Running will get better as game wears on..
One pound of flesh is due in payment for Woods.
Indeed. Need somebody to lay a lick on whoever tripped him.
Darlington is getting whooped. Tenn is acting like punks.
A few times, but he has had more good plays than bad. I saw Shead get whipped too, never thought I would see that.
Yeah it might be because they are loading the box and attacking. Just noticed it a few times.
Yeah, Darlington is struggling.
Texas is holding their own against UCLA right now.
As much as I hate UT, we need them to be good.
Yup, and Malcolm Brown is carrying that team right now.
Our Oline is doing okay but you have to have good blocking from Wrs and TEs to run on the edge. That may hold us back some this year
Well so far, I think our outside blockers have been doing really well, Tenn is just reading well.
I will preface this statement with the following: 1. Dont log in over there and 2: be respectful. That said, I am on the VOLNATION forum reading their game thread. Pretty entertaining.
Perine.
Probably waiting for a short yardage situation to put him in.
Some quotes from the Vols page on SBN… “We are stacking the box, and still getting rocked” and ” ALL OF THE BAD WORDS” are my favs so far.
Some of this play calling is still really conservative. Not sure why we are settling for middle runs on 1st and 2nd down putting a lot of pressure on 3rd.
Because they probably thought Tennessee was just going to lay down…I gotta be honest, I’m not loving what I’m seeing as far as the running game goes…
Agreed, not much urgency. Need to pull away while we have a chance. No need to let Tennessee settle in.
balls gotta be out front
Trevor needs to start leading those receivers so they have a chance.
We should get a punter sometime.
ROmAR!!!
Dangit, my feed crashed. What I miss?
Two sacks in a row.
nope, second one negated, then they got a 1st down./
What negated it?
Offsides penalty
Damnit Bomar… I mean good job Romar
TAPPERRRR!!!!
hayes…
Burned by the damn screen.
all the way to the house? only 50 yds away
Wilson locked down that inside arm…surprised there wasn’t a call on that one
Got lucky.
Sanchez missed a tackle? Hmm…
Really?
Wrap up son
Can’t tackle with your shoulder!
For the life of me cannot figure out Sanchez’ tackling.
Really?
Welp…
DAMN.
Gotta Answer that one. You can bet that Mike will fix it with angry saliva.
No shut out. 🙁
we didn’t shut out Bama either. Just need to fire it up and make a statement.
Yes I know, I’ve just been waiting for a shut out is all.
nice lil shove
Let’s see if we see any urgency by the OU offense and coaching staff, now.
Thomas wasn’t even trying.
Sanchez cost us that one… We’ll first Hayes, then samchez
Sanchez would be a perfect DB if he would use his arms when he tackles
If last week didn’t teach him that, nothing is going to.
their receivers are out physicalling our coverage
Hard to play man if there is no discipline. The Tennessee receivers are legit and others not named Julian need to step up
Don’t get too excited…. They relied on two VERY UNLIKELY plays and a penalty to score. They will wear down in the second half and our run game will take over…. Just breath 😉
I know, I know..but it doesn’t make me feel any better about Sanchez’s tackling…
Well, at least he tried to use his arms that time.
And I hate hearing them pump tenn…
they adjusted to our blitzes pretty well on the tail end of that drive… we’ll adapt. don’t worry.
Let’s go!!
Neal seems to be rather meek this game…
Wow…
Did JH go downstairs for nachos?
Yup, looks like FUJH took over
He’s on the phone with Travis Wilson wondering how actually run an offense.
Why do our return men run straight into defenders?
I honestly don’t know why Ross is out there.
wow. is this the ut feed?
Come on D.
Nice escape by Knight, though.
Ford clearly outperforming Ross right now
IMO, he has in every game so far.
samaje too
Somebody has a tell, the LB’s are creeping up.
That offensive series was a yawn.
damn, really needed to give the D some rest there
Our run game is flat
Yup. Very disappointing…
yeah, we need to get the run game working… it’s putting a lot of pressure on the passing game. don’t think we’re there yet to completely rely on this WR group.
Tennessee keeps completing those quick passes…that’s on the DB’s…
Need a huge defensive play here, don’t even want to think about giving up a td
Ross is not a RB he is a return man/track star. He has straight line speed. Zero power, pad level, or wiggle. I like the kid but let him return kicks/end around.
Yeah, he is a more, pitch it to em and let him go around end.
This isn’t how you play/coach in front of big time recruits.
Here comes a pass right near the sticks, and I bet they get it.
Damn…
stop it
Right?
too much cushion…smh
Why are we playing off coverage?
no idea….wow
Crazy
Even herbie knows not to give the receivers a cushion
you can learn a lot from a dummy
Lets go baby
wtg philiips!
PHILLIPS GETS ONE!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO U U U
i love our front 7
Phillips got some dance moves! Lol
That’s a play that will get you time on Sunday’s!
Wow, Shepard looks scared back there…
he is the only rx’ing threat right now, needs to stay on the field
I know, just wonder why he’s still returning punts….
Texas beating UCLA 10 to 3!
wait… are we wanting the whorns to win?
Um, yeah…
Hope the OC is back in the booth.
Thanks for calling him
I can’t believe we are not seeing any running from Trevor….at all!
BOOOOOMMMM!!!!!
There we go
Nice fing pass
There it is!!
BOOM!
Whoop that trick
When in doubt, throw the Shepard.
they are stuffing the inside running lanes, need to stretch
Knight needs to pull it and run.
This game is killing me!
PERINE. Nice call to screen to him!
PGrind
Nice! Samashe PGrind!
I’m just not getting this intention to run through the middle. PLAY ACTION PLEASE
Veteran move right there. Pump fake and ball on the money
Well, it looks like all they have to do is cover Shep and our passing game is non existent.
We will live or die by the screen.
unitl another rx’er steps up , yep
SAMASHE!
looks like he samashe his thumb
Yeah, saw that…hope it’s nbd…
Offense is keeping this game tight.
in a bad way
if its blown dead plays over right?
pass to KJ or use the tight end mismatch….hell what do i know
yeah, the TE play was looking good earlier… what gives
Heupel
No one mentions that knee hitting the ground
This is total bs…
False start doesn’t count as a play being run?
Exactly!
Guy says that he doesn’t have control of the ball, but 23 has to “rip the ball away”….
How about that head to head contact!
suck on that tennessee tv crew
You take it from that bicep bitch
We may have gotten away with one there
Knee was down before #23 ripped the ball away.
There we go.
Finally!!
It’s like Heupel forgot it wasn’t Landry back there. Run the qb.
and he did it right too. Get good yardage, can’t beat the Defender so get Out of Bounds.
Ford got some moves!
Feed FORD!
Nice run!
wow. that boy good
Called it.
TD FORD!!
Ford needs to be getting more carries. I think a lot of people forget he was a 5* recruit for a reason
BOOMER.
SOONER!
O… O… O… OU!!!
The OL will wear them out eventually. Just gotta keep pounding it.
LOL what fumble?
Didn’t see nuttin.
I’m blind !!
Beat that horse huh?
Give credit where it’s due. Great job JH mixing up plays. Play action, naked bootleg and power runs
Agreed
Keep Ford in……he’s the one gettin er done right now
USC losing, wow.
love it
Hope samaje comes back. Valuable experience with ball handling.
snap count or big uglies giving them boys trouble?
both
they keep shading to the excuse side of the ledger
Good stop.
VOl fans are SCREAMING about that (what fumble?) right now. Also, apparently, OU is not good enough for the Playoff (they can tell after 1 half), and our O-Line holds on every down. Even when our Defense is on the field.
haha
SEC SEC SEC SEC
there we go
nice grab
nice bell
hmmm “target Bell MOAR”
Nice catch by Bell.
x2
Holy Sweet Chili Doritios Batman! Heuple remembers we have TEs!
CATCH THE DAMN BALL
of course you think he timed it perfect
Controversial non fumble
20 to 7 i’ll take that
Damn, catch that ball!
Wow. saved TEs for this game. Bell is alive and well
Overall… solid half. Should be a much bigger margin, but I’ll take it.
i mean, we are one offside penalty away from not hearing about the sec every single second
Yeah, great call out
Why didn’t we call a timeout?
I’ll give any of them my car/house if they could grab that “fumble” from perine’s bicep. Douchebags…
Our RT. He is getting beat often
Classy of Jones, obvious slant by that reporter. Sheesh, at best it was a disputable fumble, and the ruling on the field was down (whistled down I might add).
watch out for the onside outta the half
Huh, Texsa is up by 7 at the half.
Because… Injury…
Who got hurt?
UCLA QB, The heisman hopeful… Hundley
Loved the play by Bell….would definitely like to see him get more touches in the 2nd half, especially in the red zone
I am interested to see if we avoid the “flat” 3rd quarter that we had the last two games.
I don’t think the coaches let that happen, they aren’t getting pats on the back in there.
lots of the stoops spittle flying around from bob and mike
Mack u suck
We miss u
Defense wins championships, and our D is real good. I don’t think it’s entirely the OL’s fault, Heupel is not calling a very good game. OT’s are struggling a little bit. All in all this is exactly what we needs. I think our guys were reading a few too many headlines. Reach down and grab your balls, sound off like you have a pair. Now man up!
Need to get some style in the 2nd half…
Why does JH do the “don’t take the ball TK, let him run straight ahead all day” play over and over???
I’m assuming that we don’t have too much faith in the back up qb and we wanna keep TK clean.
They expect our line should be able to beat their line, and they should. This 2nd half may see our guys finally wear them down up front
I’m looking forward to them putting that weight advantage to use
Well, normally I’d agree, but when they’re stack the box with 8 guys, we’re rarely gonna get anything.
With 8 in the box you would think one of our receivers could get wide open.
True. That’s my biggest concern so far. If they’d get oopen, we’d be up by already.
This, why aren’t our receivers getting open?
Yeah, hopefully there will be some good 2nd half adjustments….hopefully
Right now they do seem like they’re just daring us to pass
Man I can’t let go of that offsides by q.hayes. Would be a whole different game.
me too
I didn’t see the play, is it controversial or something? Or did he just blow a really good play?
blew a sack, by being offsides
Our DL had just obliterated their QB on that third down. They would have been punting out of the endzone.
I thought our D line looked top notch….Ford is looking good….TK has had some pressure on him….Throws looking good….I’m hoping we come out and score right after half
Yeah, a nice score and drive would take the wind out of Tenn. sails and eventually OUr depth on both lines will take it’s toll on the Vols.
Knight really gave our offense a spark with his run on that last TD drive.
hopefully keep em a lil more honest 2nd half
I’m very impressed with Blake Bells hands….Velcro hands…..His play so far this year has exceeded my expectations….I was hoping he would excel….So far, I like what I see.
Looks like we are going to need him.
I’m surprised we haven’t seen much flowers.
There was a play that looked like it was going to Flowers but Tennessee called a TO because they didn’t have the personnel to cover him.
Only highlight shown from the first half was Tennessee’s TD, hmmmm ESPN.
sounds about right
44-7 final. “they don’t gain another yard”
Tulsa getting taken apart by Florida Atlantic….not exactly what I had hoped
Redone offense and special teams needs to step up 2nd half
TN is gambling on run blitzes and 8 in the box. If knight and the WRs cant win 1 on 1s, this season will be tougher than expected.
Commentators are pissing me off…..We need to hang 100 on them
I wish we would go with our BIG run set, run and throw out of it not giving Tenn. a chance to sub and catch their breath.
We need to score. Come out kicking teeth.
Running game late in the 2nd should open up some passing here in the 3rd.
As I said…
Nice!
Neal!!
We can do that?
and we’re off and running!
There we go….Nice catch Neal
more excuses…weird
do we run ANY offtackle?
play catch pass to Bell?
All Knight long.
All Knight
^What you did there… I saw that Lionel Richie
That’s better
That’s how you beat men in the box!
There we go!
Great block by Blake!
BOOMER!!!!!
SOONER!!!!!!
Bell on the edge!
And that was QUICK.
Yessir
what excuse you got herbstreit…you and kliff need to douche around together more
Was that blown coverage as well?
miscommunication cause of the youth
no, it was because they are only HS Seniors… Thats what the Spin will say after we hang 20 more… we beat HS Seniors…
1 point from covering the spread. Good
Jennifer Garner is still pretty good looking. Just sayin’
Agree.
She is, but she sure married down.
Yeah, but so did my wife, so I’m happy for a girl who marries down.
Yeah, but you ain’t him.
This is where we need a turnover or a quick 3 and out. Go down and score and this ones over.
Well what do you know…. Knight keeps on that same play and eight in the box looks a little foolish!
Upvote if you think Herbstreit is a HATER!
You suckered me into it.
he HAS to hate, he’s under contract…
All of Espn for that matter… Game day at a 52 point spread?…
Aaaah!
The comforting sensation of a 75 yard drive for a TD to start the second half.
Think I’m ready for some Braum’s Strawberry/Banana frozen yogurt, now.
Oh yeah!
Wait, they have that?! If I was in OK right now I’d get some.
They do and they have Braum’s here in Dallas.
I’m in St Louis for school, they don’t have ’em here.
All they got is racial tension flavored smoothies
sorry, i had to
Fair enough.
mmm i’ll have that
thank you. im glad someone else has my poor taste in humor.
i’m all over it…haha
Lol, we’ve laughed about that plenty here already, you’re among friends.
Not any further south of that, unfortunately.
I keep checking in on the UT/UCLA game, it’s like watching the most expensive high school production of what terrible football looks like.
haha
haha. that one got me
Blake is starting to have a “this is why we use tight ends” type of game
Checkin’ in. That play was open about 3 times in the first half. Glad he kept it. They sure are loading up to stop the run. Some issues, but nothing serious. The good guys are nicely in front. Looks like another 300 yard passing game against an SEC team!
This is what you do. If there loading the box, use that genuine dual-threat qb we’ve all been boasting about – and find more ways to bring in the TIGHT END!
Boston College scored on USC again.
welcome to norman 🙂
Getting sick of giving up 3rd and long
can we please stop blowing 3rd downs…
double turds
Nice, let’s go get 7
Great stand D!
Time to get creative and put them away.
I hear ya, but I vote for pound the rock and put them into submission!
jon jones style?
I really don’t like shepherd returning punts. All we need is him to get injured on special teams for us to have another oh-crap-we-lost-ryan-broyls-and-now-can’t-play kind of season.
Yeah but I would rather have a sure handed fair catch guy back there than someone who wiffs and turns the ball over.
I’m just think of Murray every time now.
mark stoops beating Florida
Hearing Jordan Phillips just limped off the field
Jordan’s Fine
TOO MUCH AIR
Ford’s good hands on display.
Oh wow they are talking about us
yeah but the youth of these vols in…5…4…3
Oh my God theys just babies
mmmhhhmmm yes lawd
Fresh off the Rocky Teets
Play action quick slant on first or second down. They are loading the box with 9 and playing run first.
What about a sluggo or something? It seems like for years now our route combos have been very lackluster. I’m pretty sure when landry was here we just ran all verts
Yeah I’ve noticed that as well.
Wish we woulda made that, but the pass protection is bloody awesome. Nobody with 5 yards of TK
Should have pump faked and ran.
Could’ve drawn in coverage too.
And the sack!
It’s pretty clear who has the biggest sack
total
Oh. I see what you did there!
OMG our front 7…
Striker is hungry.
more excuses…new ncaa record for a telecast
D on fire right now
Mike’s Saliva… it will grease the wheels on your Defense…
Pgrind!!
these guys will have trouble bringing perine down…cause…cause of….cause of the youth
If our O line couldn’t wear them down, Perine will.
Ground and pound.
Loving the physicality……that is what traditional OU football is all about!
knight needs to calm down some. hes got all day..
Knight is gonna get someone killed
oh yay! They showed our Cheerleaders, and none of them looked like a man!!!
Technically, Ross has good YAC because of that long run vs Tulsa but he wont play against good competition unless he breaks some tackles
He’s a swing pass/sweep runner, they should use him as such.
TK makes up his mind where he’s going with the ball before he reads the defense too often.
Too cute on that run
they weren’t going to pound it with ross out there tho.
Exactly, ten knew that and stayed wide
go for it
I say go for it!
I think we can safely say because of his speed, Ross is a better run to the edge guy
Offense!
option to the wide side
i’d like to see a pass to Flowers or Ford, or Trevor draw.
I would not mind seeing the bootleg on this play
or just another timeout
Now we should run our field goal pass play.
Worley looks like a space cadet
Really?
It wouldnt be an OU game without some redonkulous TimeOut spendage
No doubt
Wow lol
I have never seen three time outs in a row….until now
Worth it
And that’s what we go with…
and, what was that?!?
OMG that was terrible.
It’s like they knew it was coming.
Did I say go for it? Hell no! Punt!
WTF!!!!!
Heupel must have money on Tennessee to cover
This will be bigger Rhett Bomar incident
time for Sanchez to jump that route…
Phillips not in…
Dont scare us. Maybe its just a precaution?
DL has been rotating all game. Romar has done a great job tonight in for Phillips.
Probably just getting him some rest.
Thank God for our pass rush.
striker is jumping up the draft boards
Is Oprah handing out timeouts or somethin?
I’d say our pass rushers are living rent free in Worley’s head right now
worley’s gonna see Striker in his dreams for a week..
everytime he sees a red uniform
Like… Miss St, or Bama, Or Arkie…
Now that’s how you cover!,!
Here we go!
Worley and Mccarron can start a support group.
wtf
WTF?
secondary has been sensational
Yup, hit Parker.
…
What the bloody…..
Another unforced error. Dang it!
Hopefully people look at the stat line and not the scoreline. Lackluster performance tonight. I hope the recruits are having a good time tho.
yep. Dont rest any of the starters. Run this mother all the way to the final clock. Foot on Throat time.
Espn forgot to mention Parker is a true freshmen…they’ve been adamant to defend Tennessee with that argument.
We just can’t pull away.
If the Tennessee player pushed him (which he did) then…
youth
haha. yes
It’s football.
but Tennessee is so young
And (insert endless conference chant here)
Doesn’t matter.
Shouldn’t it?
No, he was also trying to block that guy.
illegal dribbling
UM GROUNDING???
Completes a pass to himself?
Striker scared him half to death, dude dropped the ball. Lol
worley boounce pass to self?
Good grief
so they call the Facemask, but not the grounding??
And another unforced error. Dang
Defense swarming all over them, and then we just shoot ourselves in the foot. Games like this are why my liver takes a beating
Mine is begging for mercy.
Just keep pressuring……Damn!
we should play our corners off since we have had trouble getting a pass rush 😐
Good defense!
no jet sweeps allowed
DEFENSE!! Love it
Watch for the fake!
No flags this time
Wait. Did I hear that Tennessee is playing some freshmen? I didn’t know that…
Right? ! I was wondering when they would stop reminding us.
The O is rested, let’s get it on!
holy uncle herbstreit
Without exaggerating at all, I can’t remember when I’ve seen a qb take a beating like this
compton high vs watts ’96
LOL
You ever listen to Dallas talk radio?
Holy Crap Herby is gonna get fined for talking nice about our Defense
If you take away two penalties (both legit calls) this is a shutout and TOTAL trashing rather than a pretty good Beatin’!
This Defense is for Real.
Hey there’s some YAC for Ross!
Going by the comments there is reason I have the game on mute and pandora playing…
I’m not listening either.
horse collar?
Wtf
omg 3rd downs…
3 and out, really?
Horrible
Not happy with our Offense.
They are playing against an sec defense, so they’re obviously the best defense on the field.
Someone needs to remind Heupel it’s only the 3rd quarter…
and we’re winning? And we only need a first down?? and we have TE’s???
…and that happens
Good grief Knight. Seriously? Who was that too?
big plays are part of the game slappy
Someone let our coaches know there still is a game
Great tackle Jordan Thomas
there we go
pick
OSKIE!!!
Sanchez!!!
SANCHEZ! always good for 1
Zach Motherffkn Sanchez!! 5 consecutive games!
Wow sanchez
What a play!
Wow Sanchez
sorry bout it herbstreit…yeah they’ll take a look at it…nice little dig in there….douche
Wow….that was an incredible play
are you kidding me?
I can’t get used to a Sanchez INT every game.
He had to because he looked like a 6th grader on that long run
Sanchez with the save
That was nice
ford gassed? no pun intended
yes. yes it was…
Let’s get this offense moving again, please!
He found a good use for that shoulder.
Let’s go offense
we have 50 points with some better throw/catch and fewer mistakes…
or w/o a couple of penalties
Offense went stagnant.
Anybody think Sanchez could still tackle Ross?
doubling em up in yds with only 4 extra plays…feels like we should be up 300000000
8 in the box with the safety cheating up and we run it right at ’em. Come on.
Kinda surprised we can’t run the ball more effectively.
look below
They’re loading the box and Heupel doesn’t know how to take advantage.
i know we gotta keep em honest, but not quite as often
They’ve actually got some serious talent on defense, it would appear.
fake end around and option to where the fake came from….if that makes any sense whatsoever
Have you been drinking tonight?
not one drop
I’d like to see a heavy dose of the run in the 4th. grind it out and put this thing away
We would have to go double tight, wishbone.
Tennessee giving everyone a blueprint for how to stop our run game
Anyone watching the Texsa/USC games? Any updates on how it looks?
Texas about to score, I think.
Oh yeah? No flag?
SMH….back to back 3 n outs
3rd Down is KILLING us!
I am really hoping… that we just havent opened up the playbook yet…
I’m leaning that way also
Man I don’t like this one bit, letting them hang around
never good when the defense keeps having to go right back out. the offense needs to settle down and execute better.
Is OUr dline wearing down?
75 hold
I saw that too.
Where is Philips!!!!
Edit: He’s in the game
there’s a tired defense play…
Defense is getting tired…. Gotta get a few first downs on O!
Yup, offense is doing our defense no favors.
Jordan Evans with a nice save there.
OSKIE!!!
Wilson!!!!
better
pick6
OSKIE!!!
BEAUTIFUL!
Our offense can’t get it done so our defense will!
Now our D really needs a breather!
Defense won this game hands down.
suck it herbstreit
you too fowler
If that’s not a message to the Oline, I don’t know what is…
BOOM!!!!!
omg really??
Sooooo many teachable lessons today, lol
Jordan evans saves three td’s…
Maybe our offense is afraid to make any plays, they might get reviewed…
Evans save 6 with his tackle and created a 10 point + swing with his pass deflection. We dominated the first half more than the score indicated and the second half has been much closer than the score indicates.
be sure to remind all the sec viewers that its a big 12 official reviewer
Assuming it’s not overturned…. This is a great time for a replay…. Defense got some extra rest
Defense doesn’t get a break again
Looks like Texas is gonna win, great for the Big 12.
I’m happy for the bigxII but it’s 10:15 and texas still sucks
24/7!
I have to admit you’re right…..as much as I personally hate it
I live with a Longhorn so I gotta support them when their not playing OU. It’s tough. Lol
gross
You sing Boomer Sooner with that mouth? 😉
Boston College is up scores on USC too. Great day for upsets, am I right?
Looks like I may have spoken too soon; Texas gonna Texas.
We are going to win this game but we have really made it hard on ourselves
holy cow…even every compliment has a disclaimer
Defense gets to go right back out!
That a boy Wilson
Just curious….. Has Tennessee had a single penalty on them tonight?
Huh. Don’t think so. There was this missed holding call on that big run they just had though.
Not that I can remember
That’s pretty good for all that youth.
homer dot com says 1 for 10 yds
A soul crushing pick six, as sweet as it gets.
Maybe we can play the rest of the game without letting the offense take a down.
Intermission check of the USC game….They lost woot!!
D needs a breather. Wish we had a time out.
lol
Two unbelievable interceptions in the end zone!
that will be all we hear about too
Sanchez just giving the D a break, good job!
Give those Tennessee High Schoolers credit. They aren’t giving up…
Is Phillips hurt?
Being rotated in
sanchez totally favoring the bad shoulder,
Texsa just lost the lead.
game over, Texsa lost by 3.
Jordan Thomas!
defense has to be gassed. How are they able to hang in there…
sanchez back in
wrap up!!!! yippee
Sanchez needs to get out of there.
Get Sanchez out now…man, dude is in pain
I believe he has a stinger. Neuro pain and weakness/ numbness but structurally shoulder is fine. Hurts though
heck of a play
Tenn looks like they’re gonna have a team, next year.
If we are lucky, they use this fight as a springboard and beat some decent SEC teams this year..
I hear Ford is hurt?
I hope Phillips or Ford isn’t hurt….Hopefully just a little banged up
I’m sure Phillips is just gassed (hehe, gassed). Ford limped off, but didn’t look too bad. Both should be fine.
Flowers told the Oline that the dazzle dazzle failure on 4th was his fault, but I think the line needs to get serious on this drive.
ford was in the locker room
Pgrind!!
Its gonna stick..
LOL
gimme some “P”ork-rhinds
Do we not have any Wrs?
P-reamed
Whats up? Whats up?
WOW
damn!
There’s what we’ve been waiting on!!!
gawd that kid is scary
Get out of that man’s way!
But youth
yes yes chris, you see here in the replay, its just the youth and the miscommunication and the youth
Also, I think the youth was a big factor.
TX goes down
Surprise… TExas still sucks
Lovin me some Perine!
Point Samaje at that guy
Targeting?
Wasn’t at head area of Neal
no. no. you are still not allowed to lead with your helmet. As in Lowering your helmet when you tackle in the head or shoulder area. If your head is down it has to be above the knees and lower than the shoulders.
Leading with helmet??
SEC Officials..
How was that not targeting??
SEC refs…
Because he led with the shoulder.
He lowered his head right before the hit. That’s targeting.
I saw the head, man. Crown of Vol players helmet to Neal’s chin. You can see his head cock backwards
Didn’t hit him with the helmet or on the helmet. Clean. For real though, I would love to see the penalty’s for and against.
hell of catch and hold neal
Maybe thats why we don’t have WRs, trevor kills them
Really should be addressed
Lol!
K.J. was WIDE OPEN 10 yards further down the field.
need to turn special teams back over to BJWright! Ok, just kidding, but we’ve flirted with blocked kicks on every play this game…
My quick takeaway from this game is our oline didn’t play to well
you cant run at a 9man front. blame heupel for hiding the wrs and tk for killing the rest
No our line played well. Trevor and wrs could not beat 1 on 1s. Texas did pulled that strategy last year on us
They loaded up on the box. We didn’t take advantage of the screen passes and adapt to stretching them out. You could see the gains every time we faked the inside run, or got AJ Johnson to bite
Anyone heard the extent of Fords injury?
Toby nailed it on the broadcast earlier. Two take aways from the game: Trevor is still really good and the Defense is LEGIT>
weird…free first downs…for the youths
SEC spot
They gave them 2 yards on that spot. Help them pad the stats I guess.
That was ridiculous
It didn’t matter at the time, but I had to rewind that spot a couple of times and LOL.
Ford limped to locker room, ankle or other leg injury, hasn’t been back, no report.
So our o played pretty poorly adn we still win by 3.5 tds? I’ll take that, even against a YOUNG team.
Agreed
great point. they’ll harp on the youth…haha and the red zone to’s but they didn’t get 4 yds per play…only had a few big ones and our penalties kept how many drives alive?
Now let’s get some commitments!
We did. Jamal Danley committed
Penalties made a huge difference.
Offensive juggernaut, not quite ready yet.
Defense, um, …check.
As long as we can take care of things on 3rd down, we’ll be absolutely dominant.
Oklahoma squeaks out a home victory against tight, young, firm Tennessee team.
24 point win is a decent “squeak.”
Lol….yeah they already have their narrative ready I’m sure
Everyone, check out Fl-kentucky in 3OT
Boomer!
SOONER!
Sooner!!
Trevor broke 300 yards…..better than I thought
Yeah, he did ok, but the offense has plenty to work on.
Oh yeah they do. I think they are missing Saunders and Bester a little. But they’ll get better.
And USC went down……so did Texass 😉
Exceptional work by Striker and the Defensive line. Solid performance Bell, Thomas and Wilson. Lot’s of work with the offense remains on the throwing game and slant routes but receivers have to CATCH the ball
How long before anyone finds out if we change DGB’s number and put him out wide. Need some better options at WR
Not to take anything away from shep and Neal, but right now our options are small, smaller, and smallest. Really missing a deep threat on the outside IMO
move ross out there and let him run go’s all day long
I will say this is the first game I was disappointed in our receivers. Someone besides shep, Neal and bell have to make plays for us. And heupel needs to give smallwood, mead and Todd some time to come on and help us out.
No one seems to be getting any separation. Our passing game looked horrid in the second half. The whole offense did, really.
Yeah it looks like we are holding back and not calling aggressive plays. We should have thrown more on first down. Hopefully ford is ok because we are not the same without him.
Completely agree. By far our best all around back.
I think Perine looked good late…but I’m just not impressed with Ross so far.
Same here. Perine is definitely our second best back and has a lot of potential
On the with The deflection off Young”s face ask, he rounded his route. He makes a strong cut and the defender keeps going upfield and he has separation. I think Norvell, said it’s been a problem with the whole WR group.
Yup, this might be a good time to see what some of our freshman can do.
Isn’t it difficult to comment about a game one hasn’t seen. You watch it and tell is if this team is lethal on offense.
Anyone know what happened to Ford?
That’s the big worry.
ESPN’s headline states that OU held on to win over Tennessee…not sure where we we’re holding on but anything to recruit for SEC
At least BR says we “cruised to a win.”
I saw one ESPN headline say “Sooners Roll”, and another say “OU handles Tennessee”. Where did you see the “held on” one?
I saw it on Twitter
Solid win
How many sacks tonight?
5 with 2 called back for penalties, and Grissom couldnt wrap on one play which led to a -1 yard shovel pass. SO five total with the possibility of 8
+ the one with face mask
yeah one face mask and one off sides on Hayes
Thats a good number for any game.
I’ll take that defensive performance any day…we can win every game on our schedule with that kind of defensive performance.
They did alright for their first test against a talented team.
If other teams try and load the box, I expect they will know how to handle it better.
I think Tennessee might be pretty scary next season…
They will be good but we should be better also.
I wish I could agree with you but between losing a good part of our OL and maybe Phillips, Grissom, Tapper and Striker I dont know about that.
Phillips is a sophomore. He will be back next yr. I don’t see Tapper leaving early, just hasn’t been playing football competitively for long enough. Striker, probably.
I think Worley is a Sr. so they may need a new QB next year.
They may need a new QB after tonight…(lol)
Agreed. Tables could be reversed when OU plays them in their house.
it wasn’t when we went home/home with FlaST….
It sure was! OU blew them out at home and was in a fight at their house! the end result was the same but a play here or there and the outcome could have been different.
Side note EasTex; says here “It was Wilson’s first career touchdown and the second 100-yard interception return in school history.
Al Needs also accomplished the feat in 1945 against Kansas State.”
Looks to be that one even predates you. 😉 Nah, think the kid did a great job and happy to see how things are turning out for him.
Esco?
It wasn’t a bad game but not the dominating performance we had hoped.
I thought the defense was pretty darn dominating.
No doubt the defense was good they did start to bend in the second half and were able to pick to passes off in the endzone.
in their defense;) they were on the field a lot
Yeah how many 3 and outs did we have in the 2nd half?
WAY too many. i have to agree with some folks, that we’re just keeping it nice and simple right now
It seems like it but they’ve got to show they can do more before they’re in a tough spot against a team like texas or Baylor or even osu and kstate.
yes and you can tell texas is already looking ahead to our game…again
What exactly did kj not do well? I don’t remember him missing any balls. Unless you’re referring to him not getting separation then I agree with you
Was it not KJ that tipped the pass up that lead to an interception? And yes referring to the inability to get open like Shepard and Neal. We’ve already got two shifty smaller receivers, why not use a big WR like Smallwood, Todd, Mead, to add some versatility to the offense like Bell did late in the 2nd.
Think it might have been broken up. He’s got some of the best hands on the team. But yeah I agree with you. I’d rather have Todd or mead out there and bring shep back in the slot
Need to go back and watch it for sure. I hope we some differentiation in personnel next week.
I was hoping for it this week, but no such luck. Maybe the freshman aren’t where they need to be. I know Smallwood isn’t catching the ball consistently but something definitely needs to change
I saw a couple that Trevor squeezed in that KJ didn’t make a play on.
Yeah there were a lot of head scratchers with play calling tonight. Wonder if recruits thought the same.
We. Sucked. That HAS to improve…but they also need to be manageable 3rd downs.
every defensive recruit at that ballgame should be lickin their chops to play for mike
No freaking kidding. I’ll go ahead and just say it outright. Mike Stoops is the best Defensive mind in CFB…..at least I haven’t seen one better.
the one i wish(this is hindsight) he would’ve done different was the all out blitz. i wish we woulda showed it but dropped out. great call on the screen beat it. otherwise, yikes. i would not wanna be an opposing qb
I think on that particular play, he was just testing Tenn to see HOW dominant our D really was. They made a decent play, and I don’t remember Mike sending “all out” again after that…
But you’re totally right, would not want to be a QB against these dudes..NASTY
espn hightlight shown here is the Tenn blocked FG attempt… sheesh, really?
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=400547850
well, if it wasn’t for their youth they would’ve beat us
well, finally! Im glad someone has the guts to say so…
just trying to be like the rest of the sheep that watch espn
Yes, let’s not forget how “old” OU is…
oh man ancient. i feel youthful looking out at our guys
Shead looked slow and really stiff.
Great review.
1. how many starts? 2. yup 3. yup 4.
For sure. IF Dorial stays that would be huge.
Land thieves is reporting that Jamal Danley has committed!
You beat me to it Stephen.
I’ve been refreshing my feeds all night, starting to get some tendinitis.
He’s one I was sure would either commit while here. If not he would be a msu commit. I guess that leaves Barnett and the oline is done.
Wasn’t ou favored vs Florida and lsu?
But hopefully that win column keeps growing.
Florida and LSU were both favored in the single digits…
well yeah. sec and whatnot
Well, considering that those losses (for OU) are largely to blame for (starting) the SEC Propaganda Monster that we all know and love today… I suppose it should be left up to us to fell the beast…
We’ve gotten off to a pretty good start…
you don’t have to go rain on my parade of anti propaganda do ya? i wish we had everybody healthy for them games. woulda been a good run for us and we would be getting seig heiled on espn
I wish Mike hadn’t left the team before the LSU game to take the Zona job. The defense wasn’t the same without him.
Have thought that same thing so many times now….was just thinking that today in fact.
can you imagine 2008 with Mike… say hello to concussions Mr. Tebow…
Yeah, but then Hernandez would have murdered our defense…literally.
haha
Do we really need the likes of Mark May snapping ACHTUNG! at every mention of OU? I roflvomit at the thought…
or suppphering succotassssssshhhhh spitting all over our tv screens talking about our fellas
See, I don’t mind Coach Lou. Its nice of the SPiN to give a guy with age-onset mental disabilities a job. Anyway, its not like I can understand what he is saying when he hates us anyway… I just assume he is slobber-parroting what Reece and Mark say.
Lou’s tongue is too big for his mouth.
Needs tongue reduction surgery.
Good win…..
At least you know…
Amen. And that’s why we won. Our men beat their youths…woot woot
Yeah. Had me screaming at the tv. You’d think with a dinged shoulder he’d learn to NOT just hit with it, but throw your chest and wrap.
I thought he actually tackled better than the two previous games! But still a ways to go..
He had a great game and will give him a bit of a pass as he played with a lot of heart for being hurt. He will do himself a favor using better form tackling and less shoulder hits.
Then do it!!!!!! Does Mike stoops not see this and coach him on it? Head up when tackling and your whiffs will be near zero!!!!! Simple solution!
Takeaways:
We got our second commit of the night. Welcome to our new Jr College OT. Boom
Mark May’s starting to get on board? This is creepy…
Mark May has us #2? Isn’t that like second only to the SI curse?
I’ve got to say that when a defense goes from dominating to not so much dominating but still extremely opportunistic when the offense hits the concessions for almost an entire half, this is a very good thing IMO.
Also wanna say that Jordan Thomas was put on an island and OWNED it. Dude can play.
They certainly have talent, just not a team.
I would have liked to see Bell more involved in the passing game.
It seemed Flowers disappeared in this game, don’t know why.
Yep flowers didn’t show up much and I bet stoops will let heupel know about that.
Oh, and how about that ROCKY CALMUS!!!??? That was a badass moment! He certainly enjoyed himself. Happy to see him get one more run through the tunnel. Linebacker coach anyone?
Rocky looked like he could have suited up and played. Was great to see him and to see him so fired up.
would love to see him on this team, though his was no slouch
Nossir, that was a Championship quality D.
Did you know it was current Baylor DC Phil Bennett that recruited Rocky to OU?
Teddy Lehman does too…. Dude has been pushing some steel.
HolaKyle has been up late working hard.
Once again I’m gonna give it up to q Hayes. He played about as good as I’ve seen him play. He and striker were all over the field. Ndulue is having a great season I think everyone is worried about Phillips, tapper, striker and Grissom and leave chuka one on one.
I think moving Q to nickel was a brilliant move.
I agree these coaches know a thing or two huh?
Full on man-crush right here!
What do you all think?
Probably just sleep derivation.:p
First we had a Roy-Backer, now we have a Striker-Backer.
That is a good question.
The Sooners got banged up a little last night.
Hopefully we will get some details on Woods and Ford soon.
Can’t see stoops saying he is out and no one knowing before the “next day” evaluation. I certainly wouldn’t say anything if I were him.
Striker has to be the best conditioned player for OU. That guys motor was running in fifth gear ALL GAME . I don’t recall him coming off the field either.
Kid is just hungry. With legit skills to back it up.
Forgive my lack of football knowledge.

Thanks for posting… I agree with all of this.
I know we want a perfect win: by that, I mean, perfect play. It’s not going to happen. In business, you have to keep going. OU will be fine. It’s not always easy.
What I want is a touchdown every offensive play. And a turnover every defensive play. Anything less and I’m disappointed. But highly entertained!
LOL!!!
As for that poor Tulsa WR, I’m pretty sure even his grandkids will be born dizzy.
seems like Sanchez hasn’t been wrapping people up Because of his shoulder ,rather than just small size or technique issues IMHO
This was happening long before the shoulder injury. A great example would be the high tackling technique he was using vs. Bama.
I love it.
