OU vs. KSU Post Game Notes and Quotes

Sorry y’all wasn’t a whole lot today but here’s what we’ve got.

Coach Bob Stoops

– Coach Bob Stoops praised Trevor’s play and said that the interception was not Trevor’s fault. Said it was the receivers fault, “the receiver is supposed to break his route off in front of that.”

– Said the defense was great against the run game but they beat us on some big plays. But still happy to control the line of scrimmage.

– Praised the program and his staff for putting him in the position to be able to win games.

– “Brennan Clay was sensational”. Talked about how well he ran but also said that the line played a big role.

– Said he believes there is so much there in terms of Trevor’s ability to throw the ball.

– Talked about the fact that they are down a lot of guys but “still have to play”

– On the effect of the weather on their play. Said that the wind with the cold did make their job a little challenging.

– Said they didn’t plan on giving up those big plays but said that they knew coming in that they had to focus on the run game in order to take away what KSU does best.

– Said at half time they talked about the fact that there was really only one guy (Lockett) hurting them and they had to focus on stopping him. They tried to limit Colvin’s play early on because of his injury (but it seems they had to play him later)

– Said that he’s frustrated by the fact that the offense, in previous games, had been so inconsistent. Said that “we’ve got to keep it consistent for another week. But we showed what we can do and I believe it will only get better.”

Trevor Knight

– Said that starting fast was something they hadn’t been able to do all year but doing it today really set the tone for them

– Said that the O-line was winning the battles up front and then being able to hit a few shots down field early allowed the whole offensive game to open up.

– Talked about the 3rd down scramble pick ups and said that eventually he wants to be able to make all his reads and complete a pass but said that for now he’s glad he can use his legs. (Really smart here and shows Trevor’s maturity – knowing when to tuck it and run is about knowing yourself and knowing what you can and can’t do at this point in your game.)

– Said the wind didn’t bother him too bad.

– Said that the last two weeks has boosted the offenses’ confidence. Said that Blake can play and praised Blake and then talked about how they have depth with himself and Kendall (very interesting and very humble comment here – again, showing his maturity praising Blake and deferring to him)

Sterling Shepard

– Talked about how their ability to start fast sets the right tone for the rest of the game.

– Said that their ability to move the ball in the pass game did not surprise him.

– Said that a big emphasis in the offseason was on blocking downfield because they knew they’d have a running QB back there and it seems to be paying off.

Brennan Clay

– Said that Tyrus will be alright

– Said that it was hard not having Damien. Said they feed off each other. But said that Coach Heupel called great plays and they were able to get a rhythm.

Completely different feel to a game when OU runs out and gets an early lead. Set the tone for the remainder of the game. Even when KState came back, it felt like OU kept composed because they new they can move the ball.

Completely different game when you feel like we can run AND complete passes with some consistency 🙂

Being able to control the ground game, thus taking KSU out of their game (keeping both #33 and # 4) off the field were keys to the win.

    • Super K says:

Indeed. We owned the LOS most of the game. And without any depth at the NG position!

I’ll wait for you guys to break it down, but I thought Jordan Wade had an excellent game.

        • Super K says:

First time watching it I thought he and Dom both had great games. But I’ll be interesting in going back and watching. I’ll certainly be easier on Wade either way since he played the whole game.

  • Super K says:

Man what a great game fellas! Can’t wait to go back and start breaking this game down.

Really interested in seeing your break down, thought the offensive line play was excellent. Trevor looked really good running and passing, passing in the 2nd half was pretty impressive and of course Clay was a beast. Defense was good against the run, Lockett had his way with us in the 1st half and we slowed him down a little in the 2nd half. Just a pretty good overall game by a young and injury riddled team.

You said it best man, this team is very young and very banged up. There were several plays you could see Colvin fighting through the nicks today. I love the character and resilience of this group. If we can get healthy, win in Stillwater and then go win our bowl game, we’ll be poised to make a run next year.

Still wonder about the red zone play calling. Appears to be pretty predictable.

    • Super K says:

If I had my choice it would be Iso 3 straight downs all day 🙂

    • JY says:

Yeah, I was down on the play calling quite a bit all year long, but it looks like Josh is starting to settle in and get used to having a dominant run game.

  • Kdubracing says:

I loved the offensive identity today. I love the Ault style read option out of the pistol. I love the heavy sets running I under center. I love the slants and posts in the passing game. I thought the play calling was much better in the 1H vs the 2h, but overall fairly solid. Knight was very confident and had a great game. OL was stellar with great hole vision by Clay.

The defense had some busts today, but that seemed to me like Mike started complicating things more today. You’ll get a few busts with as many young guys as we have. I like the fact he’s comfortable enough to start mixing things up. Gives me a lot of hope for next season.

If both sides of the ball continue to develop the way they are, 2014 is looking solid. I like our odds for next week a lot better now than I did 24 hours ago.

I went to the game today with a few of my friends who are avid k-staters. At halftime I was saying if you would have told me that we would have possessed the ball for over 18 minutes and K-State only had 6 yards rushing, I would take that all day. At the same point, we had carried for 230 something. Really stout performance today up front on both sides.

  • JD says:

For Shead to be out our line looked to play pretty well together. I think Thompson had one jump. Irwin did a great job at LG

    • JY says:

Really looking forward to rewatching this one. Savage and Farniok both got significant snaps today. I thought Nila stepped in and played realy well.

Saw some true I-formation today. That was different!
