Can’t lie, I am impressed by the JUCO WRs the most. Baxter needs a scholly. Right.Now.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I actually don’t think we HAVE to run the ball on Saturday to win. It would help. It would be nice. But do we have to be successful running to win? I don’t think so. When you have a passing attack like we hope we have this year, you can get away with not being able to run the ball at times.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I think so too. I look at it as we are a 60+% pass team first. The ability to pass will create the lanes to run in as the defense must spread out to pass protect. It is just a different style offense and Stoops chose to live with it. With that said, I would like to see Perine line up 6yds deep with Mayfield under center a few times. But Riley knows what he is doing. Perine doesn’t seem to fit this offense as well as Mixon does. Sad to say.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Agreed. I’m curious to see how Perine does in this offense over the course of the season. Going forward, our RB recruits will look a lot more like Mixon (and Q/Murray) than Perine, I’d imagine.

      • soonerthunder says:

Perine had runs for -4, -4, 0, 0 in 11 carries. That kills a average. It seemed he got better when lined up deeper like you said.

    • soonerthunder says:

I agree. I want to run and pass, but we could win w/o one or the other.

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I agree. I think Riley will have plenty of little passes/sweeps/shovels/screens in his repertoire, just in case the power runs don’t work.

  • Indy_sooner says:

I think that LR kept the playbook hidden and that we will see alot more formations next weekend.. I don’t remember having someone like Mixon that can literaly line up anywhere in the field

  • Jason Vos says:

Man i hope OU wears these jerseys for the Tennessee game. It got us the win vs a tough West Virginia team last year. Plus it was the jersey that Perine got his breakout game in, and they are just nice looking.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I like those ones, as well.

    • rainydaze114 says:

I think it would be cool to use the alternate all white look. Maybe Tennessee will use their new smoke gray unis for this one too. That would be nice.

    • hOUligan says:

I like that uni. Took a while for me to get used to it. But I don’t care if the team comes out in pink bunny suit pjs….just get the W this week.

    • soonerthunder says:

Ha. I’m a lot like Ty Darlington told me last year when he said the nutrition lady (name?) said she thought the loss occurred b/c some went to MacDonalds; he said he thinks maybe the players had more to do with the loss than eating at MacDonalds. I think the players had a little bit more to do with the win at WV than the uniforms.

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I agree! I love those unis!

  • Zack says:

I think we will run the ball better this week. I don’t think Riley wanted to show a lot of his runs and play actions.
It is funny how Tennessee fans think ou hasn’t played any big games.

    • ouwooferman says:

      They dont get out much.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

ND and FSU aren’t SEC schools so those games don’t count as big games and well Alabama didn’t want to be there

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

They apparently didn’t want to be there the last three times we played them.

      • SavageSoonerEsq says:

We’ve beaten FSU the past 3 times we’ve played them. We’ve beat Alabama the past 3 times we’ve played them. We’re 1 and 1 in the most recent series with ND. We beat Tennessee last year. Next?

    • Daryl says:

Which means that they realize us playing them last year was not a big game!!!

    • cdzendolet says:

To be fair, OU hasn’t ever played in front of 100,000+, at least according to what I have read. We get up there for the RRSO, but only half of the stadium is yelling against OU then

      • Nate Broadus says:

We’ve been to Autzen, which is considered one of the loudest stadiums in college football, if not THE loudest, and would have won if not for the screwjob.

OU has played in louder stadiums.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

Autzen Stadium was so loud during that game that I could only look straightforward at the field when the crowd was cheering. If I turned my head to the left or the right my ears couldn’t take it. That’s a true story.

          • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I was there, and they got pretty loud, but they weren’t nearly as loud at aTm in 2005 (I think) when OU had AD, and they weren’t nearly as loud as OU in 2000 against Nebraska or against TT in the jump around game.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

The only one of those games I didn’t make was aggy. It’s different for everyone I suppose and likely depends on where you’re sitting. I’ll be in Neyland on Saturday and I’ll be very surprised if it’s louder than Autzen.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

Interesting…I just found this on a Tennessee website. They say the decibel level at Neyland has never been measured. I think it’s more likely they did and didn’t make the top 10!

            1 – Arrowhead Stadium (Chiefs): 142.2
            2 – CenturyLink Field (Seahawks): 137.6
            3 – Husky Stadium (Washington): 133.6
            4 – Memorial Stadium (Clemson): 132.8
            5 – Tiger Stadium (LSU): 130
            6 – Autzen Stadium (Oregon): 127
            7 – Mercedes-Benz Superdome (Saints): 122.6
            8 – Beaver Stadium (Penn State): 122
9 – Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (Florida): 115
            10 – Michigan Stadium (Michigan): 110

      • soonerthunder says:

I seriously don’t think a player thinks there is any difference between 90k and 103k. It’s just a big crowd. That’s all.

      • Zack says:

I just want to see how rowdy they get. You can have 200k fans but if they’re as lame as our fans are at home then it doesn’t matter. The loudest stadium in the NFL is Seattle simply because their fans are the most insane.

But like stoops pointed out, anywhere we go the crowd is “record setting” for that team at home.

      • Ed Cotter says:

OU just needs to score early and often and the crowd will be non existent like at ND a couple years ago.

    • @Boom_Town_ says:

Yeah. Normally Baker Mayfield would be able to complete a 5 yard out route, but he won’t be able to in Neyland. It’ll be too loud. LOL

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

    ” It’s always a great day to be a SOONER!!!! “

  • ouwooferman says:

It was refreshing to see our OC bait the D for a change. LR stated that they saw the wheel route potential earlier in the game and later set it up. Also it was great to see OU was taking what the D was giving and calling the plays accordingly, vs ignoring the same and trying to run when it was not there. Lastly, the play calling was fast and decisive.

  • Matt says:

any chance we see Westbrook back returning punts this week?

  • Matt says:

also, do you think we’ll see the wide splits this week?

  • Daryl says:

Braxton Miller run was sick but a perfect example of why you always wrap up. On the spin a DL is there but doesn’t even attempt to open his arms. If he does I don’t think he tackles Miller but I think he kills his momentum enough and allows others to get there to tackle him.

  • Daryl says:

My Prediction this week is that we start with Perine and Mixon on the field with Andrews, Westbrook and Shep. With this personal you can load up tight and run right at them or you can spread 4 wide and air it out and you never have to make a substitution. I think this would be awesome as long as Andrews can halfway block.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

lots of quick passes to start the game to allow the OL to get into rhythm. hopefully no penalties

      • Daryl says:

That is why I love the idea of the personal I listed if they come out in Nickle you can shift and go at them. IF they load the box you spread it out and quick pass it early for sure to help O line and QB get in a rhythm.

    • Hollerback says:

      yes!

  • rainydaze114 says:

Here’s Tennessee’s alternates for this year. Not a bad look if you ask me. I’d like to see them wear these this week against OU’s all white (white helmet, white jersey, white pants) version of the alternates.

    PS

Note the “#OneTennessee”… Sounds familiar. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

  • Jason Vos says:

OU will 42-31, pull away in the 4th

    • soonerthunder says:

I am leaning to the idea that it won’t be close and they game will be decided before the 4th Q. I have been thinking like you, we’ll score at least 42, but I don’t see TN scoring 31 on us. Those SEC Os aren’t that potent. They had 15 possessions last Sat. That means BG had 15 too, I guess. I can see us scoring on more than a 3rd of those possessions, so 42 pts for me is very realistic.

Their O got 3 TDs given to them by three punt returns, another TD by a KO return, another TD by a fumble, and perhaps more, but that’s 5 TDs right there pretty much given to the O. I think it was 4 or 5 of their TDs were inside the BG 30. If OU doesn’t give them huge plays in the kick/punt return game, plus gangs up to stop the run and can stop it, they should be fine defensively.

I don’t think they will stop our O, though. We have too many playmakers this year to stop us the whole game. We are a lot better on both sides of the ball than last year, and in the kicking game, too.

  • albsooner says:

The next game against Tenn will be an interesting game to say the least.
    Keys:
    1) OL – It all starts with protection and running lanes. Our OL struggled against the 1’s from Akron. Akron didn’t have a lot of depth, which showed later in the game. Tenn will be a much more talented DL, and much deeper. We don’t have many starts or a lot of experience. It may be a long day for our OL and we may have to provide addt’l protection for the line, thus taking playmakers away

    2) Skill Players / 1 on 1 – Can our WR’s get open? Our WR’s will be matched up against much better DB’s, however Tenn’s D showed some breakdowns last week against Bowling Green. I expect their D to amp up their performance, but I like the matchups of our WR vs Tenn DB’s in space. *if our OL gives Baker time.

    3) Crowd and Revenge Factor – We will playing Away, in a very hostile stadium, against a team we humiliated last year. I’m not sure we have ever faced the type of noise and energy the Vol Nation will bring with 100k plus. We have to be ready for a dog fight and attempt to take the crowd out of the game early like we did vs FSU.

    4) Harass the QB – Can Striker and Co. get hurries and plays behind the line. The OT that Striker abused has a lot more experience now (it was his 1st game starting when he played against Striker last game). Striker will need to abuse him again.

I am interested to see how our Sooners respond. I think it will be close, and I like our chances.

    • SamSooner says:

albsooner, I watched the Tennessee/BGSU game. I wasn’t impressed with their pass rush. In my opinion, Akron’s pass rush was just as impressive. Another thing, Tennessee’s OL didn’t provide stellar protection for the their QB. Most of their big runs happened on the edge, not up the middle.

I’m not that impressed with the Volunteers. Can they beat OU? Yes. But, I also think OU is a lot better than what we saw on Saturday.

      • Finney56 says:

IMHO, I think that Akron’s front 4 and maybe even 7 (starters) are better than Tennessee’s. They have a lot of Power 5 transfers on that defense

        • hOUligan says:

Don’t know if Akron’s front 7 is ‘better than UTenn’, but ‘better’ than many would give credit for being. A couple are tOsu transfers and a Miami transfer. It was a good test for our oline.

          • Nate Broadus says:

We won’t know if they’re better until after the Tennessee game.

That said, Akron’s front 7 were big, talented (Power 5 transfers) and well coached.

If you took the “Akron” off their jersey and stacked them up against any front 7 we’ll face this year, they would measure up.

    • MoJoOkie says:

      (1) I don’t know that there is a great deal of difference between the Akron and Tennessee starting DLs. I do agree that depth helped Saturday and that will not be the case this week. Baker’s mobility might help, but I’d hate to rely on that. In general, the OL needs to step up, but that’s true of every team.

      (2) From what I watched, Tennessee’s DBs looked lost and if we can say that our OL will face much better competition, it can certainly be said as well for their DB’s. I feel confident that Riley can scheme their defensive backfield. *if our OL gives Baker just a little time to get off quick passes.

      (3) The crowd will be loud, and not that it matters but we never took FSU’s fans out of the game until the waning moments when we had the ball and the clock was winding down. I was there and it was the loudest crowd I’ve ever seen. This one, to me, is on the coaches; they have to have the boys ready from the get go or it will be a major factor.

      (4) Striker has some help this time in Bond and Tapper (to an extent). Another year of experience will help their OT, byt Striker can beat anyone I’ve seen him up against.

It will be close; response to the noise and whether or not Baker stays cool are the biggest factors in the game.

  • JJSoona says:

One observation I had: Plays were coming in smoothly. No confusion. Its amazing how something so routine is missed so much when it doesn’t happen. Execution was good.

    • Defend Colfax says:

That was my favorite part. A huge flaw from the last few years.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Were they any timeouts or delay of game penalties due to waiting for the playcalling or confusion over personnel? I don’t recall any.

        • Defend Colfax says:

Me either. It looked like our QB was running an offense which is something we haven’t seen since Landry, maybe even before. There wasn’t a lot of sideline watching and there were a few plays which I assumed to be runs until Mayfield audibled to pass just to capitalize on 6 yards from a cushion. There have already been some pleasant changes you have to enjoy. I’m excited about RIley.

        • SavageSoonerEsq says:

Nope. Only delay of game call was on Akron if I remember correctly. We had a false start, they had an offsides.

  • Boomer4life says:

Don’t know if anyone caught it, but one of my favorite parts of the game was when Bond sub’ed in and didn’t know where to go and then Akron ran the play right at him, and of course he tackled the player. Was so hilarious!

  • Matt says:

I think our season sets up to allow our O-Line to develop nicely if they can just get past UTenn..Remember last year Ohio State’s line was a work in progress all year and they were really dominant in the post-season. If OUr guys can just get past this week, we should reach November undefeated and then have a legit shot at the playoff. Just stating the obvious but also reminding people that O-line’s can develop big time over the course of a season thats back-loaded

    • soonerthunder says:

I agree. Darlington told me that St. John was a very talented player. If he got beat out by Brown, moved him to RT and is battling with Samia, I like that. Sounds like nothing but going up to me. I also think it’s easier to break into things when you have about 5 RBs that can help make you look good, a plethora of WR talent and a QB that can get it to them quickly. All of this should help the OL build confidence.

      • hOUligan says:

Mayfield’s quick release and having a better foundation in this offense sets him apart and really helps in the passing game. And the line and backs did well in blitz pickups. Line needs to get better in the run game this week.

        • Nate Broadus says:

I like how he doesn’t hesitate. I can’t recall a moment where he looked indecisive.

You need a QB with confidence. I’mma say it right now, Mayfield doesn’t look like he’s scared of anything.

        • Fear The Magic says:

If Mayfield only had TKs speed and Codys height the Heisman committee would be saying “Boykin who?”

      • Boom says:

Hope he settles in cause he looked lost and several busts. When we ran the ball, backside hurt us and it was normally from the RT spot.
Mayfield used his feet well during his reads. Needs to get more comfortable in the pocket but his feet for the most part were dead on.
Trevor threw the ball well too. On the INT, just bummed me out that he didn’t check off, predetermined all the way. That is what got him in trouble last year but he will get better. Glad we have 3 good QB’s.

    • Nate Broadus says:

I’m thanking God, Buddha, Hova and the Heavenly Host and all the little leprechaun people that OU got to face a front 7 like Akron before going to Knoxville.

This OL didn’t need to go in there feeling big in their britches. A young OL needs a test and Akron provided a great one. They will be better prepared to face Tennessee because of it.

  • Matt says:

did Ed Oliver and Tyrie Cleveland make it to Norman this past weekend?

  • soonerthunder says:

I think it’s interesting that OU has only 4 less players on NFL rosters than Bama. You’d think they would dominate the talent. This, too, after we basically had one class that was almost a complete bust that we are still recovering from (and coming out of), the ’11 class.

  • KJ1123 says:

Watched the Tenn game and other than number 9 lined up over our true freshman our OL should do ok against them if they put in a solid week of practice.

    • Matt says:

what’d you think of Samia’s debut? Do you think he’ll get the start on the road or will they put St. John in?

      • KJ1123 says:

I think he graded out higher than St. John last week. Which is not saying much because Im sure the entire OL didnt grade as high as B would of wanted them to. But having said that I think Samia will get the nod again. I know he’s putting in ALOT of extra work. He needs to sure up a few things in his technique this week for sure.

        • Nate Broadus says:

After watching the game again, I agree that Samia will, and in my opinion should, get the green light.

He may be green, but he’s intense and he finishes blocks. He’s got the nasty in him that Bedenbaugh seems to covet out of his OL.

          • KJ1123 says:

He definitely was playing intensely Sat (after he came back in). He’s always had that, even in HS. B likes a “fighters” mentality when it comes to his players, as people can tell from his love of MMA, and I think most of the guys in the starting group have that. If they can gel and literally play as one unit, this group will be special.

        • Fear The Magic says:

Goodbye Williams, Goodbye Thompson. Hello Brown, Hello Samia
OU Doesnt build at Offensive Tackle. They Re-load.

  • Kevin says:

I’m excited that Mixon and Perine are in the backfield together. Hopefully we can capitalize on some better and stronger running throughout the season!

    • Fear The Magic says:

As long as he stays healthy I think that Mixon is going to do some amazing things this year. Game 1 already showed indications of that.
Get set for a fun ride.

  • Jed says:

Comments from those who know of such things: how did you think Que Overton looked in the bit he played?
Combination of my slow brain and the stunningly bad a) cameras and, b) camera work of Fox Sports left me a bit undecided. Looked like he had a pretty good debut.

    • thebigdroot says:

I hate the color commentator. He gets by with repeating things that have been written about a hundred times and when he does try to sprinkle in something new, he’s wrong. He knows little about the teams he covers in games.

    • soonerthunder says:

I thought he looked dominating. Very good.

  • Jason Vos says:

Tired of seeing Ty Darlington getting blown back after he snaps the ball. I know this sounds crazy but if not for Ty Darlington’s smarts and understanding of the game and the fact we have no experienced backups, he would not be starting.

The backup center Eric Wren is intriguing to me just because he weighs close to 330 pounds.

    • Matt says:

there was a vine circulating of Wren getting DESTROYED by either Overton or Gallimore

    • hOUligan says:

Darlington a lot like Ikard. Love em both. Good representatives of the team and University. Game very similar, more technically sound than strength. That said, Ikard was much stronger his Sr year.

    • SamSooner says:

Jason, I played HS football. While I’m a not small, I wasn’t as big as some of the other linemen on my team. Some of these linemen went on to play for UGA, FSU, Florida, and GT (Georgia Tech).

I had a DC who told me that I could overpower these linemen. I didn’t believe him until he taught me this simple trick: be the first to come off the ball. If a 360 pound lineman is still in his stance, a 200 pound receiver can knock them over.

My point: (1) Darlington has to come off the ball first and (2) we can’t ask him to pass protect, make a shotgun snap, with someone over him. Hardly anyone can do that because your momentum is going backward. OU should have the QB take the snap under center, play-action fake, if we want to pass. At the very least, change protection.

      • MoJoOkie says:

Center is the hardest position to play on the field; especially in shotgun. The guy over you knows you have to shift your center of gravity on the snap and has an unfair advantage. Typically if there is a nose, one of the guards should help the center or he’ll typically get beat.

        • SamSooner says:

Very true. Most people tend take one play and make it the absolute. If you look at Darlington’s overall play, he’s more than solid.

  • Krys Allen says:

We getting the Trench Warfare this year? Really interested in seeing the breakdown of this first game.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I was out of town and listen to the radio and then watched it on youtube when i got it back in town. One thing I couldn’t tell was was the play clock. Last year it seemed we ran the meercat offense with the entire o looking to the sideline like meercats until 3 or 4 seconds on the clock.

How quick did we get play’s off and run them?

  • Matt says:

someone needs to tweet Dave Lapham and ask him what he thought of KJ Young’s performance

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      he sure liked Seibert’s kickoffs

    • Boomer4life says:

      That was hilarious!

    • BoomerDave says:

In fairness to Lapham, he could only be going off a roster that was given to him by OU. Someone in the Sports Information Office screwed up.

    • Stephen says:

It pains me how little Fox Sports does for OU, both in quality of production and in who they pick to announce the games. I will say there’s a couple good announcers there, however.

      • rainydaze114 says:

        Gus Johnson is the best.

      • CS says:

Fox Sports does little even for their own telecast, why would that change for our games. I remember the BU game on Thursday night, that was one of the worst telecast I have ever seen in my life. The camera angles, the replays, the commentary – pathetic.

        • Stephen says:

I agree, whoever called the WVU and TCU games last year was good, outside of that there isn’t really any commentator that’s exciting to listen to. Get us on NBC, CBS, or ESPN more often, although that isn’t possible with the Big 12’s and OU’s partnership with Fox.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

The box score had Dom Alexander with a reception for awhile.

  • soonerthunder says:

Has anyone discussed how great a play Mayfield made on that TD to Mixon? Stepped up away from pressure, threw a pass back across the field w/another guy bearing down on him. That is a great play by the QB folks.

    • Boom says:

He used his eyes really well to the right then came back to the left. By then, the D was at a loss. Was a really good play.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I thought his vision was outstanding.

        • Boom says:

Baker looked off the S’s before coming back to the left. They had already turned their hips to the right when Mayfield turned back left. S’s were done.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yes, the ability of the QB to “look off” defenders has been missing for a while. What a difference it makes if you have a QB who can do this well!

          • soonerthunder says:

yes, all that, but his footwork was great too. just a great play by mayfield. this is what I meant when I said in the summer that he just had the IT factor. Those little things that make a play like this rather than 99% of QBs getting tackled for a loss or short gain at the most.

      • soonerthunder says:

since i don’t answer that other guy, I’ll say under your comment that the Perine block didn’t make it all happen, but feel guilty even replying to that guy’s dumb comments here. try not to do this again.

but back to what you said, yeah it was a really good play. if he doesn’t step up into that (which most QBs wouldn’t do), that play never happens.

    • RBear says:

I noticed that Mayfield spotted that Mixon was going to be open but wasn’t in a good enough position yet to get him the ball so he then scrambled a bit to get a better line on it and Whammo!

    • Stephen says:

The Perine block made it all happen.

    • Hollerback says:

Bob Stoops said it was a designed play to Mixon. Love the misdirection Riley is bringing in. That play really spreads the field sideline to sideline. Baker looked really good running the offense against Akron.

  • Nate Broadus says:

I want to see what Lincoln Riley dials up for Tennessee. What OU did on Saturday was like a vanilla dip cone — a little bit of chocolate, but mostly just plain vanilla.

That and I want to see more of Mixon. My God, that cat is incredible. He’s a highlight every time he touches the rock. Forget the hurdle for a minute, did anyone see how Mixon separated from the linebacker that had the angle on him on that same play? He hit the gas and left the poor guy choking on exhaust fumes.

This offense has some crazy talent. I bet Tennessee gets a healthier dose of Mark Andrews than the Zips did on Saturday.

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I watched that play over and over. It was like he got shot out of a cannon. If that LB didn’t tackle him he would’ve had another 30 yards and a TD in his season debut. He and Perine in the backfield at the same time is just sick.

    • Jake says:

100% agree, my friend. Why on earth would Riley completely reveal the offense to Tennessee ahead of time?

This was a smokescreen. Little this, little that… Just a basic variation of the offense that was focused on letting us “Out-Athlete” the other team. I expect even more movement, speed and definitely more weapons (i.e. Mark Andrews) to be revealed on Saturday.

Everybody and their dog knows that Andrews is going to be a big piece of this offense, but it would have been foolish to provide lots of film study for TN on him & the offense overall.

  • RBear says:

My thought on the alternate Uni’s: Let Tenn. do the gimmicky, stripe the stadium crap for this game and let us take care of business by playing smash-mouth football in our traditional uni’s.

That’s IF I had a vote of course.

    • ouwooferman says:

I agree, not this forum. Wait till we are fully into the meat of the season etc.

    • rainydaze114 says:

Which traditional uniform are you referring to?

      • RBear says:

Sigh… yes there have been slight changes in the uni’s over the years but nothing as drastic as the “Bring the Wood” theme or gold-trimmed letters etc.. I’m talking about wearing the traditional visiting whites at an away game.

        • rainydaze114 says:

The only tradition Oklahoma has is winning games. I couldn’t care less about what they wear. I love the alternates… especially the white helmet.

          • RBear says:

That’s why OU doesn’t need alternatives, they already have an identity and there is no need to reinvent themselves.

            IMO.

      • Hollerback says:

I really like the top 2 on the left.

  • KJ1123 says:

lol that Tenn fan got pwned big time

  • Stephen says:

Do the all-white uni’s, grab some media attention. Who cares if it appears to be gimmicky, you still get talked about. Nobody ever has articles on articles about traditional uniforms. There’s literally hundreds of thousands of people that follow twitter accounts that only share new uniforms and nobody wants to reach that group of people? (Disclaimer: winning over uniforms anyday, just saying, what’s the drawback here?)

    • RBear says:

To me, it’s an unnecessary distraction- fashion has nothing to do with the game- just go out there and have ONE thing on your mind, it’s not a matter of fashion to me and it never will be.

Don’t worry, if you play good, you’re gonna look good.

    • rainydaze114 says:

ZERO drawbacks whatsoever. OU arguably played their best game of the year in the alts last year (and worst, but whatever). I personally love the alternates and would like to see more of it. So long as they don’t add colors that aren’t in the color scheme I’m good.

    • rainydaze114 says:

I’ve always like the modern take on a vintage uni. i.e.

  • James says:

All of us fans have our own opinion on the alternate uni’s and that’s ok. However, it seems quiet clear to me that the overwhelming majority if not all of the kids we are recruiting these days dig the alternate uniforms….. I understand the traditional outlook on this topic and do not totally disagree but times are a changing, so I say roll out the alternates from time to time! Either way, in the word’s of the late Al Davis “just win baby”…… BOOMER!

    • RBear says:

I stated this below and will repeat it here with a little more added- OU already has an identity and is not in need of re-defining itself. Other schools have used this “gimmick” to draw attention to, and to reinvent themselves in an attempt to appear more attractive to recruits. Yes, it has been successful in some cases but IMO is nothing more than unnecessary change for traditional power-house programs.

There are some hideous, failed examples of alternative uni’s out there that are change for the sake of change- see Maryland.

      Again, I’m a traditionalist.

    • rainydaze114 says:

What that video doesn’t really show is Elliot’s monster block to spring Miller free… stuff of legend right there.

  • OUknowitscomin says:

So what are people’s thoughts on where the OL suffered the most on Sat? Was it the alignment of D? Brown looked lost initially to me, which was surprising after hearing how well he did at fall camp…grading the best. Seemed like complete confusion as to who they were supposed to block.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I would really like to hear/read what JY has to say about OL’s performance issues. After watching replay (slow motion) of all offensive plays it didn’t appear to be a terrible performance. Penalties and drops by WR’s stalled a lot of plays in 1.5 quarters.

      • OUknowitscomin says:

Agreed, would love to see JY’s assessment. Hoping we get some of that this year. The first 3-4 series though, I disagree on it not being a terrible performance. I thought it was pretty ugly for OL

    • KJ1123 says:

I think the OL play suffered all around. Just because we put up 41 doesn’t mean the OL played good. That’s a product of the playmakers we have in the skill positions. From what I hear, Coach B was not happy to say the least during films yesterday. Assignments, communication, recognizing the fronts were a big issue. BUT it’s only the first game, now that it’s over with they have a better feel for how to prepare and what they need to sure up. I honestly think they will play alot better as a unit this week.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

Can you imagine how good this offense can be if OL gets its act together!

      • SamSooner says:

It’s hard to put up 41 points on anyone if you’re not solid at all. There were some mistakes early but when they got settled in, they pushed some people around. I mean, look at Perine’s first score. He walked in. I know it was three yards out but some D-linemen got pushed out of the way. And really, there should have been 17 more points on the board.

        • KJ1123 says:

That’s true you have to be able to at least get somethings right to put up some points. I just think there is no way Akron should of forced that many 3 and outs and the issue was up front. Our OL has issues with the zone blocking schemes sometimes, not taking care of the first level before they climb to the second (for instance). Big on Big they seem to do fine. I’m sure B will be really tough on them this week the first few days. I’m looking forward to watching how they improve on Sat.

          • SamSooner says:

You’re right. It wasn’t looking too good at the start. I don’t think we have anything to worry about from Tennessee. Their DL didn’t impress me that much.

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah I agree, I really thought they were better than what I saw. I mean quite honestly Bowling Greens OL handled them fairly well. I really wish I was going to this game, but dang it’s expensive!

      • OUknowitscomin says:

Yeah, count me as one that’s not as worried as others. While it was really bad, I suspect Beld will really spend some quality time with them this week & fix a lot of the kinks. Experience helps more than anything. One could argue that with the youth, mistakes make much better teaching material than if they all had an acceptable outing

        • boomersooner says:

Yeah I agree. Knowing you don’t have it all figured out and getting beat by your guy is something that’ll keep you grounded and hungry to learn

    • ouwooferman says:

Coach speak was they ran a D front that OU had not prepared for that week. It was designed to stop the run game. Akron sold out to stop the run.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

And they did. But we made them pay for it. Glass half full!

        • SamSooner says:

The thing I like about this offense is that there isn’t any personnel changes that gives any indication of pass or run. Can you imagine what that’s like on a defense: Riley will always have his full playbook at his disposal, when means the whole field has be defended.

          • Angryinch says:

Also something that is going to help is that Riley won’t take tell halftime if ever to figure out what adjustments need done. Riley made some fast adjustments got the players on the same page and took what the Akron Defense was giving “the pass”. He didn’t do what Josh would of done and just keep trying the same thing over and over.

I know I have seen some negative post about the Running game but be happy that we have an Offense that can do what the Defense is giving up run or pass we have both now!

BTW first post happy I found this site: BOOMER!!!!

OL is going to be good next year, I think.

      This year will be tough.

If we can find a way to squeak by this week I still think we can get to 9-0 going into the final stretch. By then, they will be a lot better.

    • Clint Lenard says:

First game. Adjustments will be made, as they were after the first quarter. They’ve learned a lot from the first game.

i’m going back over the replays. just noticed how that brown pancaked 2 players on perine’s td, the 1st one of the game. everyone blocked very well on that play

SIAP…Anyone have any idea why Ricky DeBerry didn’t play vs. Akron?

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

No I dont, but personally I’d hope he’d be able to redshirt with LB depth not being a big issue

      • Daniel Ruffo says:

I agree 100%. Since his dad, and maybe other family, attended the game, I wondered how they felt. Were they upset that all those other freshmen played and he didn’t? Like you said, it may be because of all the LBs. ahead of him.

And I was wondering about Quick. Was he even dressed Saturday?

  • Mike Reed says:

Who would’ve thought that the SEC Aggies of A&M would go from unranked to #16 in the AP poll? That BS kept OU from moving up a spot. Gotta pump the SEC teams up all they can. ESecPN has a headline on the front page that says “Record 10 SEC teams in Top 25 chase Buckeyes”. I guess the other 14 teams aren’t worried about chasing the Buckeys. Only those great SEC teams. smh

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Yep. They were falling over themselves today on ESPN in a rush to say how Bama’s win over WI (which lost 59-0 to OSU in Dec) and A&M’s dominace of ASU proved the SEC was back on top!

  • soonerthunder says:

did anyone notice that brown pancaked 2 defensive players on perine’s 1st td?
