      Joe Wylie

Joe Wylie’s football career fascinated me, we both graduated high school in 1968.
We were both from small East Texas towns, his smaller than mine. We had a controlled scrimmage before our seasons began when we were both juniors. His name had been mentioned as their star player. He was used as a flanker in their offense.
All I can remember from that game so long ago was this thin, wispy kid that seemed terrified of us. He had negative yards against us that night.
Imagine my surprise when I kept hearing about this sensational player from Henderson that helped take them to their first ever state playoff appearance, and how even more surprised I was that he was to become a Sooner.
I instantly became a fan of his.

he stll lives in the Henderson area, doesn’t he ?

I was a teenager missionary’s son living in Salisbury, Rhodesia. My uncle and aunt were sending me the entire Daily Oklahoman’s Sunday sports page. I memorized those pages and never threw them away while in Rhodesia. I wrote Joe Wylie a letter and he wrote me back. Never forget that. The only star I ever wrote a letter to.

        • Cush Creekmont says:

I remember going into 1971 that Wylie would be the “star.” But a kid named Pruitt put that to rest by the USC game. And Roy Bell from Clinton (a senior vs Wylie & Pruitt Jr) made a huge difference early in the RRR game. Those 3 names mark the start of the great wishbone RB era in my mind.

not to mention that he was a 4.0 Honor student also!

      Silky smooth Marcus Dupree

      • Jed says:

Anyone else see a similarity in stride between Dupree and Mixon? That little glide thing. Probably just wishful thinking.

        • Cory Reedy says:

At times….I see some Demarco Murray when I see Dupree highlights.

        • Oscar says:

Marcus had the best shoulder-dip fake that I’ve ever seen. You would think that he was changing direction, but he never did. When he attempted his come back in the Ram’s camp, they said he was impressive. Unfortunately they went to the spread.

    • Sooner 76 says:

The Andros brothers were friends of my father at OU after WW II. Dee coached the Oregon State team that beat OU at OF in 1971, the last game before the wishbone was installed.

One of my favorite Sooners from the 60s wore 22: Ron Shotts. Shared TB duties with Steve Owens on the 67 team that won the OB vs Tenn.

      • keith moore says:

Oregon State beat OU in 1970. In the end, it was a blessing as it forced our hand to make the switch to the wishbone in the off week before Texsa.

        • Sooner 76 says:

Thank you. It WAS 1970. I will correct.

I was even at that game. My bad, bad, bad.

          And it WAS a blessing.

      • Oscar says:

The third Andros brother, Dick, worked at the same place as me in New York. Really nice guy and I enjoyed visiting with him everyday. He loved Sooner football also. He had a club foot from WWII battle so he had a hard time getting around. Died just a couple of years ago.

  • Soonerbred says:

Really happy for Venebles. I’m not sure he ever fully got the freedom to do what he wanted in his defense. It was certainly a tough decision to leave but seems to have been for the best all around.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I think he did and he created some good and average defenses. At Clemson he probably can recruit more “Johnny Five Stars” as he calls them. He didn’t recruit terribly well at OU.

      • Oscar says:

Sometimes, the reality that you might start loosing a “pay check”, lights a fire under you rear end.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

He did a very good job with the LBs and knows how to stop the run. Not always as strong in pass defense.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      Total D 2014 Clemson 1 OU 51.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Let me write the “freaks” entry for McGowan:

    11. LaQuan McGowan, Baylor, TE (sorta): The mammoth hippo senior caught a TD in the Cotton Bowl last year against Michigan State, sending Waco into a frenzied state of nuttery unprecedented since David Koresh.

“He’s got the coordination of molasses on a cold day,” Robertson /Robertson 2016 said. “And by molasses I mean lard. Straight-up lard filling the creases of your moob folds and turning your sweat milky.”

It’s been said that the 6-7 McGowan has “slimmed down to 410,” But let’s be real: there is nothing “slim” about a 410-pound man. So instead of scratching out a hack piece that meets everyone’s uninspired expectations, I will summarize what everybody outside of that stanky, nasty roadbump between Dallas and Austin is thinking:

Fatty fat fat. McFatty Fat Fatterson. Portly O’Fatty. Fat. Fat. Fat. Fatty fat fat.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I’m sorry Baylor but I must be looking at your little trolling attempt all wrong. When I see that score my first thought is, defense? Really? A team put up 58 points on you, that isn’t something to brag about.
