2015 Fall Camp Preview | Cornerbacks

Image of PJ Mbanasor via 247 Sports

As we approach fall camp, I though it would be a good idea to offer up a few notes for discussion regarding some of the various positions groups. We’ll begin with the cornerbacks.

Zack Sanchez – Sanchez is pretty much a lock at the left cornerback position. Early on in Sanchez’s time at OU, he was one of the guys who really put in the extra work with Chip Viney to develop his skill set. I’ve been told that this summer he’s been reignited in his efforts in preparation for the coming season and has been putting in a lot of extra work.

Although calls should come from the safeties, thus you would hope that one of your safeties is the leader of the secondary, Sanchez remains the clear leader of this unit. Whether he is a good leader or still needs work in that department will ultimately be judged, in large part, by the results on the field this season.

Jordan Thomas – ‘JT’ goes into fall camp as the favorite to win the right cornerback position, if for no other reason than he has the on-field experience following last year. I’ve been told Thomas’ footwork has continued to develop well and that there has been a natural growth and development in his game with another offseason under his belt. Also, JT was an “athlete” in high school and, as such, there has been a larger jump in his game since he was really starting from such a rudimentary level with respect to playing corner.

If there is one criticism I’ve heard repeatedly from multiple sources regarding JT, however, it’s that he may not necessarily be the hungriest guy on the team. He was fortunate to be blessed with a natural ability and athleticism a lot of other guys simply do not possess, but if you want to be an elite corner at this level (or the next) you have to be constantly working to perfect your craft.

Dakota Austin – Austin continues to work fighting to put himself in a position to challenge for a spot on the field. I’m told he gives his all in 7-on-7 and frequently runs with the 1st and 2nd group. He has cat-like quickness, but in the spring game continued to give wide receivers simply too much space.

One of Austin’s issue is he continues to struggle putting on weight and with Oklahoma moving to more press coverage, Kerry Cooks is going to be looking for guys that can be physical at the line. And while you don’t have to be big and strong to press, it certainly helps.

William Johnson – The JUCO cornerback enrolled at OU in January and had the obvious benefit of going through both winter workouts and a full spring with the team. While I get the sense Johnson had a good summer, I’ve also been told that he hasn’t necessarily done anything to make him a favorite to take a spot from either Sanchez or JT. I’m told he’s being used primarily as a backup for the left cornerback position and the nickel back spot.

Johnson comes out of a JUCO where he played a lot of Cover-3 and did it well, so it will be interesting to see if he get’s a chance to really push JT on the right side. As of right now, I’d guess he will be taking most of his reps at left CB and nickel in fall camp and, at this point, I don’t see him dethroning Sanchez or Parker for either of those starting spots.

PJ Mbanasor – We’ve heard Mbansor’s praises sung throughout the summer from various sources. In fact one said earlier this summer that if they had to bet on a freshman playing this year, it would be Mbanasor. I continue to be told he has an excellent work ethic and brings both the size and athleticism that Cooks wants at the cornerback position.

I’m told Mbanasor will have a legitimate chance to compete for the starting gig opposite Sanchez. And while I think it will ultimately be tough for a true freshman to (at least initially) take the spot of someone like Thomas who started four games last year, I will say that I’ve been told if anyone is going to take JT’s spot, it’s Mbanasor.

Stanvon Taylor & Marcus Green: I’ll be candid with you, I haven’t heard a lot about either Taylor or Green. BUT, I don’t want that to be misinterpreted as a slight to either of them. When you’re getting information from sources, it’s not always easy to get a clear picture on every single player at a respective position.

I have been told some general stuff regarding both — they’ve been active in the summer workouts and participating in 7-on-7 — but just haven’t heard much in the way of specifics about their overall development.

With Parker playing the nickel, where does he go in a standard 4-3 set? Does he replace Thomas as corner or Ahmad at safety?

    • Super K says:

Will go through that when we do the safety preview 🙂

I don’t have the exact date but it was in October of 2013. Will that suffice or do you need the exact date?

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Antoine Stephens going to be a safety since he isn’t in this write up? Thanks, this is great by the way.

    • Super K says:

Sorry Lincoln, completely forgot about Antoine. He has been playing cornerback. If I get a chance I’ll add him later.

      • TheFuerte says:

I’m guessing he’s a bit of a project, but his size and raw ability could make him dangerous later. Could he be a guy who is capable of playing safety, or is he too slight to provide true run support?

        • Boom says:

I was thinking of nickle due to his size at 6’2 190 if he has the cover skills. Hope he can play CB as you can’t have enough of them.

  • Fear The Magic says:

That look in the eye of Mbanasor ( in the above picture ) says one thing. Focus!
    I like it.

  • Jason Vos says:

Said it b4 move Stanvon Taylor to WR. I bet you he would be way more productive as a WR judging by his HS tape.

    • Zack says:

I think the offense would benefit from having him too

I work with a cat that knows ST pretty well and he swears he has hands of stone and a significant lack of motivation. All the talent in the world will only go so far if you aren’t willing to put in the work. I have been hearing that ST has been a little more “involved” this OS and I hope that’s the case. Watching talent wasted is so very frustrating!

My buddy also plays ball with Tre Brown (CB-Union Tulsa) on the weekends and says the kid is just unreal. His little bro plays at Union and started bringing Tre a while back and he said his raw athleticism is startling and he carries himself with the type of confidence you want in a DB. My buddy is all of 6’5″ and said the only thing TB needs to work on is technique (naturally at his age) and dealing with cats his body type (tall and built). I showed him some of the glowing remarks Super K has made on Tre and he said they couldn’t be more spot on. Pretty excited about this youngster and I hope we off him SOONER rather than later…see what I did there?!?! Be cool y’all!

  • Finney56 says:

Maybe I’m blind, but why can’t I find this from the home page?

  • KJ1123 says:

I’m so ready for the team to strap the friggin helmets on. The offseason workouts are great and all, but now well see who’s the real deal and who isn’t.

  • disqus_MGlT3IoZ53 says:

This is a scary group unfortunately IMO. When your undisputed leader is a liability you have a pretty good issue. Sanchez was good at times last year and you see the INTs, but he is constantly getting beat and is a horrid tackler. We really need JT to take a huge step and hope for really solid pressure from the DL to help this group out

    • thill says:

Dude, he is a gambler which is fine with the offense we plan to put on the field. Would you rather teams eat up yards in chunks because we wont go after the ball? And using the word constantly is excessive.
And how are you going to dog out his tackling? He played almost all year on one arm.

      • disqus_MGlT3IoZ53 says:

I agree to an extent on the gambling – its often needed but he has to improve a lot on not biting on all the fakes. He did have one arm a lot of the season but the technique and effort has always been the same on tackling for him. Its a big problem and until he wants to be physical – he is a liability in that regard

      • thill says:

And the reason he is the undisputed leader has a lot to do with the work he is putting in. Seems JT isn’t’ as hungry. I’d be more worried about that than I would be about Sanchez.

        • TheFuerte says:

I think sometimes the hunger aspect eludes some underclassmen. Hopefully JT will begin to envision himself as a leader and take ownwership of his position, the defense, and the team as a whole as camp rolls around.

          • Zack says:

If he is taking it for granted then I say run somebody else at the ones, make him feel like he’s 3rd on the depth chart and see if that lights his fire.

    • Zack says:

As mentioned below he did play half the season with a bum arm but his tackling is questionable he does need to wrap up more as opposed to looking to cause fumbles. And I hear what you’re saying that it’s uneasy to rely on him to be the leader but he is the most experienced guy in the secondary and if the other 3-5 guys on the field with him are an upgrade this year in the secondary then you won’t see him exposed as much. Last year he was in a cover 3 responsibility but because of the safety play he really had more than just a third of the field to worry about.

      • MoJoOkie says:

I think too, with respect to his tackling, he is somewhat on the small side. His height is all right, but he is thin. Often, he has to tackle WRs that outweigh him by 15-20 pounds. Throw in a bad shoulder and they write on your tombstone that you were a bad tackler. Maybe he got some lifting in during the offseason. I could use a little of that myself.

        • Zack says:

To me it sounds bad but corners should always go low. Even in the NFL corners often give up at least 10-20 pounds to the player they try to tackle.

          • MoJoOkie says:

Not trying to be argumentative, but going low against a larger receiver can turn a 6-8 yard gain into a touchdown.

          • Zack says:

That’s true. With Sanchez though didn’t he go for the big hit sometime last year at about the 3 or 5 yard line and the guy bounced off and walked in for a td?
It can go either way that’s why he needs to hope gang tackling is a part of this defense’s philosophy.

          • MoJoOkie says:

Yeah, early in the year (maybe befor the shoulder) he tried to tag the receivers and would sometimes bounce off. Later on, he just tried to grab on and hope for help to arrive. He’s too reedy to be a big hitter, so maybe hanging on is his best defense. I think he’s a good to great cover guy though. Almost always in position to contend the play.

          • Zack says:

I think he’s a really good corner. May actually project as more of a free safety though in NFL. Good speed but not great, ball skills though are as good as any corner. If he played for lsu he would have honey badger type of hype which is another guy with good but not great speed.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Hard to dethrone a guy that went up against the 2 best WRs in CFB last year and did respectably well. His upside more than makes up for the inherent weaknesses, especially when compared to what we had on the other side of the field.

Also, I thought he played injured for a portion of last year?

      • Ryan says:

With all due respect sir I think Amari Cooper might take exception to your “2 best wide receivers in CFB” statement haha I agree tho Sanchez played well for us last year and is probably the least of our secondary concerns. Those safeties are what concern me :/ hope there is massive improvement there

        • Indy_sooner says:

I included him, Sanchez played against Cooper in January and Kevin White in the fall 🙂

    • KJ1123 says:

I guess its fair to say that given last years results. But it’s a new year, guys are older, new coaching, some new guys, etc. They aren’t a scary group for me, just a little nervous until we see them on the field. I think the schedule sets up well for this group to gain some momentum and gel before the meat of the schedule.

    • DCinAZ says:

Outside of the WVU game when he was injured, when was Sanchez getting beaten deep and being a poor tackler last year? I keep reading both of these memes and I keep not seeing it on the field outside of one game.

      • Daryl says:

I agree on the getting beat. I felt in coverage Sanchez had a very solid year. BUT you cannot watch a game of him tackling and feel good about it. He was notorious for never wrapping up and trying to take guys out and it was regular failure. The good thing is that he is not afraid to go make contact, but at his size he needs to wrap and be a solid tackler this year. This was something you can go all the way back to the sugar bowl and see.

        • DCinAZ says:

I saw tackling issues in the Sugar Bowl and against WVU when he was injured. I haven’t seen this as a “notorious” re-occurring issue and I watch the same games everybody else does. I watched him shut Lockett down so bad they had to move Lockett to Wilson’s side just to spring him.
Zack Sanchez is on the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, theBronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, and now added to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list, which is annually given to the nation’s best defensive back. If he has notorious coverage and tackling issues as some people are saying, why is he on all three watch lists?

          • Daryl says:

I didn’t say he had bad coverage! I said he was very solid in coverage and his # of Int’s is why he is on those lists. I want the guy covering the best WR we are playing against but I do get nervous when it comes to him tackling. I know we disagree on the tackling but just wanted to make it clear I thought he was very solid in coverage.

          • DCinAZ says:

I know you didn’t but many others have been saying it which was my point. I see it all the time on forums but I don’t see it on the field.

          • soonermusic says:

I agree. There have been times in the past when he appeared sometimes to go for a hit rather than wrap up, but other than when he was injured, he appeared to have gotten the message, and corrected that–at least that’s what I saw.

          • DCinAZ says:

Same here. Going for the big hit in the Tulsa game is what got him injured in the first place. He publicly acknowledged tackling issues after that game, said he would correct, and he has. That’s what I’ve seen. He wouldn’t be on everybody’s award watchlists if half of his entire game were a problem.

          • Daryl says:

I got ya and see it too. The guy that I don’t want to see on the field but sounds like he will be is A. Thomas. I thought he played AWFUL. I know he was young but I didn’t youth I saw a lack of an ability to read plays and cover. Please someone take his spot.

          • DCinAZ says:

Yeah he seemed lost and slow out there. WRs ran by him like he was standing still many times.

          • Scott Moore says:

Look again. He doesn’t wrap up too much. Many times he throws a shoulder and tries to bump them out. But a lot of that really could have been injury. But if I’m not mistaken he did that the year before too. When he wasn’t playing hurt.

        • eastoksooner says:

Correct. He does not wrap up well at all. Sticks his shoulder in but does not tackle through the opponent. I think that is how he hurt his shoulder. Great cover guy though.

      • wynwilliams64 says:

Watch the TCU game. He got whipped a few times in that game. Also, after watching the K-State game last night, I know he was up against Lockett, but Julian was terrible in that game. In my opinion, he should’ve stuck to nickel or been moved to safety. He was a terrible corner. At least in Mike’s defense he was.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Thanks for the preview Super K. Never hurts to have plenty of guys ready to step up in case of injury or another guy not playing well. Hopefully we see lots of improvement over the course of the year. To compete in the BIG 12 the CBs will need to play at a high level. Thanks again.

    • Ed Cotter says:

BTW Super K- Ykili Ross has been doing so well at USC this summer they gave him #30 so that he could play on both sides of the ball. He is ranked in their Top 30 impact players for 2015. Not too bad for a true frosh. Just thought I would pass that on.

  • TheFuerte says:

Last year the corners stuck to one side and did not match up with a specific reciever, or switch to field/boundary like some do. Will that change at all from how they’ve played in the spring and 7 on 7?

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Is my memory bad or did both Taylor and Austin start at least once? If so, what does it say when guys who were first off the bench don’t even get mentioned now?

Does that mean our talent is getting better or worse?

    • Coach JK says:

You are correct, year before last Stanvon started when Colvin was hurt and then by the Sugar Bowl Austin was playing. Last year we saw nothing of the two of them. I wonder if they were in Mike’s doghouse? Seems to be a pretty large place among players.

  • Ryan says:

It concerns me that Sanchez hasn’t gotten any bigger. Didn’t the official site say he even lost a few pounds this offseason? He’s a good player but that worries me. I am very excited about PJ tho and I like JT as well. He seems to like hitting people lol

    • Jordan Esco says:

Heights & weights haven’t been updated in months, so I’m not sure how much stock I’d put in what’s listed on the roster right now.

  • Boomer4life says:

  • OU-Texan! says:

JT is putting in the work and he has put on more weight. He is hungry and you will see a more physical and technical player in him in 2015. He knows that he will be targeted more than Zack and he welcomes the challenge. He will be ready. Last year was his first year since 10th grade actually playing the position full time so it speaks volumes not only to his athletic ability but also to his intellect; the way he moved up the depth chart and onto the field. I’m excited that we could potentially have 2 lockdown corners for the first time in a while and with the development of PJ the sky is the limit for the DB’s this year. Honestly my real concern is who plays behind those 3? I honestly believe there is a very distinct drop off in talent after Zack, JT and PJ. I like Dakota and hopefully with the new coaching he can blossom. My two cents from the couch! Is tomorrow September 5th???? Boomer!

    • hOUligan says:

Curious, but do you have eyes on the situation or 1st hand knowledge or repeating stuff you’ve read? Hope you’re right on JT.

      • OU-Texan! says:

1st hand knowledge. I talk to a lot of the players regularly.

        • thill says:

Then we need more out of you slice!!! Insider info is all we got right now with nothing on the field.

    • hemisooner says:

I thought at the end of the year he played great considering he hasn’t played the position very long.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

I was excited when I heard he was originally headed for Northwestern…dude’s got some brainage. I hope you’re right and he’s hungry. I’m looking forward to seeing him this fall.

      • SamSooner says:

He was a frosh last year. I want him to play well but I want to see PJ opposite Sanchez more than any of the other CBs.

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

PJ is my favorite frosh, and may be my favorite CB on the team. I was amazed by that kid whenever I saw his film and his performance at the camps he attended last summer. Not only this, but he actually registered an account on here and made a few comments last summer as well. I thought that was pretty swell.

    • Indy_sooner says:

I hope he is. They did that with Sanchez freshman year vs Colvin and he made them pay for it.

He says he will do better now that his left shoulder is reattached to his body.

The best part of this is the competition developing with Mbanasor working on the right side. JT better step it up as the door is wide open for PM to take that spot. Was hoping to hear Johnson might be a factor.

Facebook losing their mind about OU to the SEC rumors.

Anyone have any knowledgeable insight into that?

    • Sooner Ray says:

I don’t Facebook. Is this Facebook related to The University or a couple random people on their Facebook pages? There are threads everywhere discussing the possible moves, hard to believe Facebook has the latest insider info.

      • j l says:

Its a couple groups im in, OU related, but not official.

Normally id brush it off, but the guy who posted it usually has pretty good info.

        • Sooner Ray says:

I’ve seen rumors thrown around everywhere even to the point of tracking plane flights from Norman to SEC areas, but who’s to say whether it’s negotiating conference alignment or just scheduling future games. I’ll just sit back and watch the show.

          • Zack says:

Jordan retweeted some sort of board banter. Saying a serious donor thinks the feeling is OU should be playing in the toughest conference (sec) if we’re gonna lose 4 games a year. Sounds better if the losses are lsu, bama, auburn, sc, Florida etc. as opposed to Baylor, ksu, tcu and osu

          • rphokc says:

for all the reasons I’ve seen re going to the sec, this is the best……we’d have better losses

          • JD says:

we could lose and still go up in the rankings haha

          • rphokc says:

hypothetical espn stoops interview ……..”bob, you’re first yr in the sec and it was a tough go with 6 losses, your thoughts? Well first, they were sec losses…….in a good way.”

          • Stephen says:

            Best thing ever.

          • JD says:

Our toughest games would be against Mizzou and ATM lol

          • Sooner Ray says:

Sounds logical to me. My coffee (ok, beer ) would go down easier after a loss to LSU as opposed to TCU or Baylor.

          • Zack says:

And I don’t think there should be any worry that we would be a 4 loss team in the sec. After a few recruiting cycles I think we would be the best in the sec or at least in the race each year there

          • Sooner Ray says:

I agree. Everyone that is scared to go against the best because of losses forgets that the best recruits want to go there. Join the best…….get the best recruits. We would be top tier in a short amount of time IMO.

          • JD says:

The last SEC team we got beat by had b12 players LOL…call me Sunshine!

          • Sooner Ray says:

You can’t be throwing logical facts around this late at night…..come on man! ?

          • JD says:

Man…I just got home…Im worn..but not that worn lol

          • JD says:

oh…and it was a b12 offense as well haha

          • rphokc says:

gumbo and sat nite date with the tigers in death valley……..whadya think…..we can dream

          • j l says:

Funny enough, i just got done reading the board of regents agenda minutes from the june meetings.
            Nothing of note

    • Stephen says:

I have a bit. I’m not the source or know the direct source so take this with a grain or two of salt.

OU is rumored to have had or is currently talking to the SEC about getting an invite. The problems are numerous, most notably getting out of the GOR and who would be the other addition to the SEC.

Nothing will happen until next summer or even the summer after that as there must first be an exit plan out of the Big 12.

There is a big conflict between networks as Fox has the rights to OU and doesn’t want to give them away. ESPN really wants them.

There’s an issue with “damages” to the conference, teams, and Fox that may come from leaving the Big 12.

Lastly, it would take 3/4 vote if they wanted to dissolve the Big 12, if that’s the route they’re wIllinois to go and there are teams that wouldn’t survive outside the Big 12 and then there’s teams that are being “held back” by the Big 12’s perception, media exposure, competition level.

Hope that helps, again take it with a grain of salt as I personally can’t say 100% factual but it’s also difficult to make up.

I think the other team would be… O…Shit….it’s. …U…just speculation on my part though.

You’re not wrong. The only issue I see is why would they take two teams from the same market when they could possibly hit two markets…maybe Virginia Tech or someone.

Also talk of Kansas as a potential partner.

Isnt the fox TV contract between the conference and fox, and not necessarily OU and fox? I dont see how fox goes after us, or the SEC(ESPN), when we arent the ones who breach the contract.

If the big 12 dissolves after we leave, so be it.

I forgot about the 3rd tier media GOR, and yes that could be an issue, but nothing a little money probably wont solve.

I think Fox owns the tier 2 or 3 rights but I honestly couldn’t tell you for sure. The money thing could he paid back with the contract and what the SEC would pay to OU each year.

Come to think of it, i do believe thats correct. I guess that would mean they own all our media rights. Could be a pickle, who knows. Either way, it shows us as a hot commodity, which cant ever be a bad thing.

Sorry if the quality is a little bad. Just stumbled upon these picture in a box my dad gave me when I was around 12. Thought I’d pass them along, I think they’re pretty cool maybe y’all will appreciate them too.
