My first post in thread. We are good. Perine is SPECIAL. We need Sanchez to get healthy dangit. TK9 would have killed them on zone read “option”. Seems like they are all designed hand-offs. I LOVE mauling people with our offensive line and SP32 handing out headaches.

Perine isn’t the only one who had a coming out party…….how bout Ross?……Heupel??? Trevor was calm and found his touch. The Sooners have 3 running back stars blooming. This D just doesn’t quit. Zack needs R & R, What a heart that guy has…………..
If Ross would be patient and wait for his hole, or hit the one given, he’d be an absolute beast. That will come with time. No denying how special he is in the return game!! I personally feel they need to get more receivers involved, or get bell and flowers involved in the passing game. All we heard all fall camp is how Quick was impressive, but he’s seen the field for maybe 5 snaps. Trevor needs to be a playmaker not a distributor for this team it be VERY successful. Shepard is a beast and Neal and Young are getting better, but they need to figure out a way to get these young guys some time. We hear it from the coaches, but no action. Kind of like what we hear about the tight end! This team is Special. I really believe it. If they take the reigns off Trevor, this could be a very special year.

Ross is pretty far behind the other two at RB IMO. His hips are extremely stiff so he can’t move laterally and his vision is sub par. Has excellent straight line speed for the return game just don’t like him in the backfield.

Ill say this. If all thos zone reads were designed rb runs Huepel needs fired. If they were true reads Knight blows at the zone read. If Knight keeps half of those zone reafs IMHO we score 14-21 more points. Someone needs a seripus a$$ chewing after that offensive performance on the qb side of things. Huepel or Knight need a fire lit up their ass because if je carries tje ball we bury W. Va in tje 1st jalf.
It wasn’t like we had a 21-point lead and were cruising. It was tight, and when you leave all those plays in the playbook you are really taking a chance. Guess they have tons of faith in the D, because it sure wasn’t looking like the O was pulling out all of the stops.

TK didnt degress at the zone read since last season. its quite clear he’s not permitted to run in order to stay healthy. we have no suitable backup qb. if tk goes down, so does the season
Then take the play out of the playbook. It is stupid to run a play designed for the quarterback to keep or handoff based on his read of an unblocked player if the quarterback is told to never keep it. Why keep running it? You are setting the offense up to fail. If you had a quarterback who was just terrible at throwing deep passes so badly that you tell him not to throw any passes over 12 yards, you wouldn’t constantly call pass plays where every receiver is supposed to run go routs.
They looked like zone read plays and it looked like Trevor made the wrong read when he should have kept it many times. It is perplexing to say the least. Either Trevor sucks at it or our coaches suck at coaching it. I don’t think any our our offensive coaching staff has come from a zone read offense. Spread and Air Raid yes, option no.

I have to say, I was a detractor last season, but he’s been very impressive so far. I don’t think he’s been scored on yet, which is more than anyone else in our secondary can say.
Like Drew below I wasn’t a big dan of Hayes last year but more and more he is reminding me of Javon Harris who had a sub-par Junior season but foloowed it with a Great Senior Season and the same couold be said for Gabe Lynn. Happy to admit I was wrong about Hayes and congradulate him on a Great Start to the Season!

Ross needs to work on some things so that he is able to contribute to the running game early in the game. I think they can misdirection plays and screens/sweeps and he would be successful but between the tackles he’s not there yet. However late in games the switching between ross and perine looked like it worked well so until ford is back healthy I would like to see them alternate those 2 when the defenses are worn out. Ross needs to be on the field just not always as a tailback.
I wonder how he do as a fullback? I know he is kind of light for the prototype fullback but he could be good at those quick hitters or faking it to him and he slip through the middle and get open for a pass.
I don’t think he’s a terribly good blocker though. Could be wrong, but regardless, I think he’d be fantastic as a WR. We’re having some troubles there anyway, and you always want someone with his speed on the field. I can see plays where handing him the ball out of the slot (like we did w/ Sheperd last year) doing some serious damage.
Early on Ross was stopping his feet as soon as he got hit, as in previous games.
Later in the game he was actually keeping his feet moving after contact and he ran harder. Would like to see more of that from Ross.
Yep, I’ve said it before but Ross runs like Demarco, after Demarco was coming back from his knee injury. But late in the game he was running like Ford. Much different.

Well I think Josh Heupal actually called a GREAT game! I didn’t think so while I was watching but upon further review, all thoses middle runs they ran in the first half started taking there toll in the 4th quarter and we just ran right over them on the last couple drives. Takes patience to call that kind of game but Perine was a BEAST and in the past when we got down Heupal would have gotten away from the running game and it has caused us trouble but this time we just kept pounding the rock until we crushed them into pea gravel! ALL DAY!
Good observations. I think the passing game handcuffed Huepel a bit. Neal and shepherd had some shocking misses. The incompletion in the first or second drive of the game where Knight threw behind a Shep looked like he expected Shep to settle into the open space and instead Shep kept going on his route.
Those run plays up the middle likely wouldn’t have worked with Ross being the ball carrier. Perine displayed amazing patience to let the blocking develop before hitting another gear. Heupel did a good job calling the plays that the o-line and Perine were best suited.
First chance we’ve really had to see Tank get in rhythm. It is surprising how fluid he is in the hips and able to change direction. Quick feet, good vision. Behind a veteran oline, this should open up a lot of possibilities especially if the receivers stop dropping balls and TK can slow down and find the open guy. This offense is on the verge of going nuclear.
It also looked as though he was trying to lead Shep with that missed pass (albeit in the opposite direction). Had Shep been able to get his momentum going the way of the pass, he had a ton of room to run.
I think part of the plan was to loosen them up with surgical passes early and on running downs, and then wear them down with the running game as the game progressed. Worked pretty well.

I don’t know that striker will end up with the numbers but he does have the impact. Has he said anything about Hayes? Because I think Hayes is having a great year so far and it’s funny how everyone wanted him to be benched.

Was thinking the exact same thing. From the beginning these guys acted like they had the game won. Even their coach supposedly said he felt sure they were better than us in every phase except for maybe the D-line. Talk about presumptuous. WVU is very good, particularly on offense, and going to Morgantown is never easy. But to see their attitude last night, you’d think they figured OU for a paper tiger. One honestly wonders what in the world could have made them think such things.
