A Quick OU Injury Update

Image via USA Today

Just wanted to give a quick injury update on Trevor Knight, Sterling Shepard & Julian Wilson. All three have yet to practice so far this week and both Bob and Mike Stoops provided some information last night regarding the current status of each.

* Knight – Last night during his weekly radio show, Bob Stoops confirmed that Knight did not practice on Tuesday. He said that he’ll “probably have a determination” on him Wednesday.

This is purely my opinion, but if Knight were to not practice once again on Wednesday then there would be very little chance he plays Saturday against Texas Tech.

* Shepard – Also during his radio show, Stoops said Shepard has been held out of practice so far this week as well. However, Stoops did say that he’s farther along than he was at this time last week and that he (Shepard) was expected to give it a go today.

* Wilson – During his meeting with the media following last night’s practice, Mike Stoops said that Wilson hasn’t been able to practice so far this week, presumably because of the thumb injury he suffered last Saturday.

I think of the three, Shepard is definitely the most likely to play on Saturday. And for whatever it’s worth, at this point, I’m not expecting Knight to play. And even if Wilson plays, I think the plan would be to work in Jordan Thomas some regardless. But, again, these are all simply my opinions.

What are the odds that we may not see Knight again this season.. At least until the bowl game..?

If you want odds, Dean Blevins is your man…

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

C Plank has been saying on radio in Tulsa all week that he’s hearing Knight could be done for the year… that’s why im asking…

        • soonermusic says:

Yeah, I was just kidding. It’s kind of a running joke about Blevins. I have no idea, but based on the descriptions of the injury and seeing him toted off on a board, it would certainly seem like a reasonable possibility to me that he would be done period, not just for the year. This seems like just the sort of thing around which rumors will fly like crazy and we’re best waiting until we hear something first hand.

I understand the Deano reference… I was just wondering if the Brainiacs had been hearing anything similar…

    Ouch.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I’m not too worried about these guys missing this game. I want to pound the ball and run the clock anyway.

  • Sooner_Ace says:

NEVER want to see anyone hurt, that being said the future of the program relies on the ALL of the team getting playing time when it is needed. Concur with Sooner Ray pound the ball and run the clock, however Sybil is the helm on the O side, so that probably means he will do the opposite.

What exactly is knight’s injury. The first time he got hurt it looked like his left shoulder blade area. When he got hurt again last week he looked like he couldn’t move his left arm; it was if it was paralyzed. You can see him about to get up and his left arm doesn’t move and he shakes his head as if saying “no way”. The neck brace and back board tend to be brought out when neck or spine injuries may be present.

    • Sooner Ray says:

It’s been said in threads here and other places that it is transient quadriplegia, also been called a deep stinger. I understand that it is an injury to the cervical spinal cord causing temporary paralysis.

      • red clay says:

        “transient quadriplegia”
“an injury to the cervical spinal cord”
        “causing temporary paralysis”

        I look at those words.
        Then I think – this is a _____ game.
        A GAME.

Quadriplegia – paralysis of both arms and both legs. Over a game?

TK has a lot of years ahead of him. This could force some major decisions. At the start of 2013 we had a very promising O lineman, Ben Habern, retire from football due to a neck injury. There is no dishonor in calling enough when its been enough.

    • Sooner_Ace says:

      essentially a deep stinger…

  • Ed Cotter says:

I think you got it totally right……if we see any of the three it will be Shep. Better to make sure they are fine before letting them back on the field…..as it should be. Thanks for posting this update.

  • HoustonChiver says:

I think this is a good game to test the backup secondary on Wilson’s side of the field. Tech can have a lethal offense but we should be able to shut down their run game enough to force QBs into some dumb throws

  • ratman says:

Look forward to seeing Jordan Thomas. He is the future starter at CB.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Stoops comments on injuries are worthless and most infuriating. I would rather he just didn’t comment about them altogether. I realize that injuries can be aggravating, but how many times this season alone has the speculation bitten us in the ass.

  • Stephen Dale says:

Knight’s injury was serious enough he should sit at least two weeks—-then reevaluate. Wilson is basically one-handed and CB’s need both hands ( per MStoops) so it sounds like he is going to be unavailable for awhile. Shepard ? who knows. Its late in the year for MStoops to change defensive philosophys and TT will be trying to duplicate Baylors approach : dink & dime the Sooners to death, then hit the big play. JMHO, but it seems like OU is going into this game without much hope of stopping TT defensively and without much of an air attack offensively. I think one can expect TT to blitz repeatedly to rattle C Thomas, disrupt the Sooner ground game with shifting alignments, keep the Sooners in 2nd or 3rd & long as much as possible, and take advantage of field position & turnovers in addition to throwing the pigskin all afternoon. Again, just me, but this has the trappings of another blowout with TT grabbing the lead early and OU never catching up. TT by 3-4 TD’s…..51-27.
