Report: Texas A&M Emerging As Possible Landing Spot For Trevor Knight

Image via USA Today

According to a report from Taylor Hamm of GigEm247, Texas A&M is emerging as the front-runner to potentially land grad-transfer OU quarterback Trevor Knight.

Which, if true, would be somewhat ironic on a couple different levels. The first being multiple former OU players — Keith Ford & Brandon Williams — who have already transferred to Texas A&M, as well as the possibility that the Sooners are believed to be potential transfer destinations for the departing pair of Aggie QBs Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray.

But perhaps more so because was back when Knight was once committed to Texas A&M before flipping his commitment and signing with Oklahoma.

Considering the aforementioned loss of Allen & Murray, on paper the move is certainly one that makes sense for Knight. He will be immediately eligible next season and would presumably have very little competition for the QB1 gig in College Station.

In terms of his fit for what Kevin Sumlin wants to do offensively, however, there may be some familiar with Knight’s strengths (and weaknesses) who may be skeptical as to just how successful he may be in College Station.

Of course there still remains the possibility, even in spite of this report, that Knight remains in Norman next year. It may seem to be a small chance in the eyes of some, but nevertheless the chance (at this point) still remains.

    Big mistake….

    • SoonerfanTU says:

By Trevor? He wants to play, and probably start. Can’t blame him for that, and he only has one year left. He could probably go somewhere smaller and do better, but he is a competitor. I don’t think he’d be overly successful if he went to aTm for a year, but I’d fully support him if that is what he wants to do.

    • Ed Cotter says:

And it’s his to make. He has his degree and wants a chance to be QB1 and not QB3. The grass isn’t always greener, but he sees his time at OU is pretty much done and wants to actually play meaningful minutes his last season. Drew Allen (Syracuse) and Thompson (Utah) did the same thing. Hope he stays, but can’t blame him for wanting to find a school that can get him on the field.

  • Zack says:

I’ve got no problem with Trevor looking at a&m. Unfortunately I think that program is under a lot of fire right now and if tk goes there and doesn’t do well (as a starter) then he becomes part of that problem. On the flip side if he does well and they somehow win the sec west that would be a great story.

  • Boomer4life says:

Wish him well anywhere he ends up.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Makes sense. I wish Trevor well wherever he goes if he transfers…but I’m not going to cheer for aggies for him.

  • soonerinks says:

Wish Trevor the best whatever/wherever his future might be.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

I hope it works out for him. Trevor you’ll always be a Sooner.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Methinks he will light it up. I think Stoops maintains alot of relationships with coaches even with the disdain we have for all things Aggie. Wish him the best if he does

  • Slim Sooner says:

I wonder about Connor Knight. If Trevor does transfer, will his brother likely follow? I hate to see TK go to College Station with the issues going on there with quarterbacks. There’s got to be a better place for him, but I really hope he decides to stay in Norman.

    • Brien Brown says:

Highly possible, but IDK what reason he would have to leave (other than TK leaving but, that’s not a legit reason in most schools eyes or the NCAA) and if a program would be willing to take him also?

      • Ed Cotter says:

Connor actually plays meaningful time for OU as a snapper and tight end. TK is leaving to actually get to play and not back up Baker and/or Cody. Don’t see CK following his brother anywhere when he sees playing time for a team that is in the NC hunt next year as well. But stranger things have happened.

        • Brien Brown says:

I agree but would think it would be a high possibility. But I wouldn’t leave

          • Ed Cotter says:

You never know. I don’t know TAMU’s situation at snapper or TE enough to give a definitive answer one way or another. Also, has CK graduated? Have not seen a list and only know that TK has since it was publicized regarding his looking at a possible transfer, and he would only be able to do that and play immediately under the graduate transfer rule. Has not been mentioned in CK’s case.

          • Brien Brown says:

I was going say the same thing. I don’t think he can without having to sit an year is a difference also. Plus like you said he is a rotation players and helps out so why leave? I hope they both stay TBH.

  • Brien Brown says:

TK has been a fighter and a leader since he got to OU from my POV. I do hate that he struggled cause I really wanted TK to be the man at OU. I wish he would take not of how BB handled his situation and find a way to stay and still help the team. But I wish him luck in whatever he does!

    • Oscar says:

The situations are not similar in any stretch of the imagination, except for the “transfer” part. IMO, a silly comparison.

      • Brien Brown says:

They are very similar TK lost his job to another QB like BB did to TK very same and like situations what is so different oh wise one?

      • Brien Brown says:

TK wants to start like Bell did so he is looking to leave to go play like Bell thought about doing difference is that Bell was big enough and athletic enough to switch positions and help at TE. TK can’t switch that is the only difference

        • OUhomer4life says:

On the switch position part, I think you are wrong. I have discussed this with a few people, and I think he would be a good slot receiver

          • Brien Brown says:

I think he is fast enough and could be. My concern is his ability to get hurt which sadly seems to happen a lot IDK how many hard shots he can take as a slot WR IMO. But to say his and Bell’s situation are nothing a like is idiotic and no you didn’t say that but the guy above must be smoking to early this morning.

          • soonermusic says:

Bell was good enough to get into the NFL as a receiver. That’s different than just switching positions to play some in college. The coaches and everyone else were on board, with good reason. Haven’t heard even a whisper of TK changing positions. That seem to be only in the realm of message boards.

          • Brien Brown says:

            I agree!

        • Oscar says:

I apologize. I misread the post and thought you were referring to another transfer. As I re-read, yes, Trevor could use other options.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

aTm would at least win one game next year…Bama.

    • Brien Brown says:

You assume that TK would be throwing to a Bester, Saunders, and Shep. Not likely!

      • Clint Lenard says:

        A&M has some outstanding receivers.

        • EasTex says:

They do and TK was always effective when allowed to play up tempo, the one thing that terrifies bama more than anything.

          • Brien Brown says:

He didn’t play well in an up tempo style against TCU!

          • EasTex says:

I can recall certain times in certain games when he was allowed to go up tempo and the offense performed well. It was when he had to do the constant “look at me” that he faltered the most.
If you recall the up tempo and not the meer kat against tcu, fine, I don’t.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I thought he was at his best when allowed to roll out and make plays from outside the pocket. I think he needed the roll out time to read the defense and gave him just enough time to process all the information. But, what do I know?

          • EasTex says:

He did make some nice plays rolling out. I think the constant admonishment not to get hurt killed his confidence in 2013.

          • Boom says:

TK has the tools but lacks with decision making which is the most critical tool. As I’ve watched him, he does well in rhythm and single target. However, if the 1st read is not there, his decision making is questionable. Decisions are multiple reads, timing on passes, and a rip or touch pass. Those are just areas he should be doing better at this point in his progress as a QB. My .02.

          • EasTex says:

I agree with that. I also believe his lack of development and his poor performances went hand in hand. When he was prepared he played with much more confidence and his decisions were better.
I do believe TK could have done better with someone like Riley in his early years.

          • Boom says:

Decision making could be a little better under Riley. However, decision making is something that takes place at a much earlier age. You can see it at the 7th grade level.

          • Brien Brown says:

I can’t disagree with that but even the throws we know he can make he was throwing behind his WR’s in the TCU game. Now I will say this had he had a full year under LR I think we would of seen a different TK.

  • EasTex says:

    I have always liked TK.
While he may not have had the success on the field that he and we all hoped for, he has been a model citizen and Sooner. He has his OU degree and will always be a Sooner. He is free to choose which course his life should take and I wish him the very best, whatever that course may be.

    Good for him.

On a writing note, that third paragraph is tough to understand.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

Has Dustin hired you as his assistant grammar policeman?

      • Kyle says:

It’s not grammar, it’s the wording. I’m not being critical, just thought it might be an oversight and clearing it up would help others. No need for you to be upset about it.

        • Brien Brown says:

I doubt he was upset Sir, he is just busting chops Dustin always corrects peoples spelling and grammar so for you to do it means that Dustin has a new friend to play along with his games.

          • Kyle says:

I don’t read the comments often so I don’t get the reference. Thought I was being helpful and the writer wouldn’t mind that, I’m sure it wasn’t intentional by him.

          • Kyle says:

            Thanks for the explanation.

      • Brien Brown says:

Everyone is a critic and Dustin probably did hire him. Tots and Beer seem to be a good payment on here!

  • Bill Deblassio says:

Trevor Knight and his 50% completion percentage will be the nail in the coffin for Sumlin just like it was for Heupel. Just my opinion, and I’m not raggin on the guy..

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

This would make sense for him. Good luck wherever he chooses to play next year.

  • RBear says:

    Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!…

  • Sooner Ray says:

I’m fine with whatever he decides. Article says a decision may come by Christmas, he had planned to be here for the bowl games, and Sumlin is in a tight spot. Should be interesting.

  • RBear says:

I wish TK the best of course, no matter where he lands- but on to Sooner business; with Frison and now TK leaving, does this free up 2 scholly’s for us for 2016 kids?

  • BoomerDave says:

Trevor needs to decide WHY he is transferring. If it is for playing time, then he needs to transfer somewhere that he is guaranteed to start, like a Texas State or Sam Houston St. I have seen nothing from TK that shows me he is a guaranteed starter at TAMU. Sometimes guys transfer thinking that they are better than they truly are. Kendal can’t get playing time at Utah. Drew Allen couldn’t play at Syracuse or Daxx Garman at Maryland. If he is going somewhere to eventually just be their backup, then just stay here, compete and see what happens.

    • ND52 says:

At least find a system that utilizes his legs as much as his arm. Oregon?

    • soonermusic says:

I totally get what you’re saying, but neither Kendal nor Allen were starting qb’s at OU, that’s a big difference. Whatever the fan’s evaluations may be, if he’s transferring to play it’s gonna be a combination of what he thinks his chances are, and what the coach at the new school tells him imho..

  • Bob Edwards says:

Sounds like a good move for Trevor, he’s done well against the softer defenses in the SEC.

  • ND52 says:

Does anyone know if changing positions has been discussed with him by the staff? I just do not see him starting at QB in anything other than an option heavy offense.

  • JJSoona says:

Does anyone know why Frison couldn’t or wouldn’t get it together? He’s got a future in football based on what I’ve seen.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Just really sucks doesn’t it? OL men are hard to come by.

    • Rick says:

Talent wise he was awesome, he obviously had some “off the field” issues. I don’t know about the future part now though. I hope he can get it together and play for someone. He’s definately got the talent. I for one JJ should have been a politician, however, I wasn’t a criminal so I didn’t qualify.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

I hope he goes there and does well. Wishing nothing but the best for TK9.

  • brainpimp says:

Wishing trevor Knight nothing but the very best in both success and happiness.

  • brainpimp says:

Wishing trevor Knight nothing but the very best in both success and happiness.

  • DCinAZ says:

Starting over in a new place from scratch might help Trevor get his groove back ya never know.

  • RonBurgundy says:

Remember… TK didn’t have much help in the receiving corp. Or none …when Shep went south.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah. But we’ve seen enough to say that he is not an Air-raid qb at OU. Good luck to him. Perhaps he ought to consider LSU as well. I’ll never forget his victory in the Sugar bowl. Thanks TK.

    • Brien Brown says:

To that point why has Mayfield been able to work with those guys, oh that’s right his passes get to the WR or they hit them in stride not behind them or over them. I am not bashing just the truth that you all have seen also.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It is interesting because as a back up this year he scored some points and was good until TCU…I’d like to see a breakdown of all his in game reps…But TCU almost cost us a shot at the Natty.

      • EasTex says:

You make it sound as though Baker has never thrown a ball behind a receiver, too short or too high, which is not the truth. He is much better at the QB position, that is the truth.

        • Brien Brown says:

Well no one is perfect by any stretch just Mayfield is more accurate and Knight is more consistent at throwing bad passes. I like TK I do but not the right kid for what we are doing. I think only IMO that he would be GREAT at KSU and what they do!

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yeah, at the beginning of this season Mayfield couldn’t consistently throw the back shoulder fade route which LR made a living on at ECU. Late in the season I’ve watch Baker complete a lot of them. He’s improved a great deal this year in his accuracy.

        • soonermusic says:

Sometimes it doesn’t take much for things to get out of sync with a qb. When everything is working well, and everyone around him is playing well, and the play caller is making the right kind of calls, things look great. Any one of those things goes south and it can look terrible, cause the guy to press, and the result is a terrible game. The fact that TK was replaced by Cody as backup for the last game indicates that the coaches weren’t too pleased with his outing in spite of the problems that were created by what appeared to be poor play calling in the second half. So be it. Fans online seem to want to see things black or white, someone is hot or they are terrible. There is a lot of room in between, and often the difference is largely factors out of the qb’s control. imho.

      • Bill Holder says:

Baker had Shep all season, had a juco step up and made some catches. Other than that he had the same success with the same receivers TK had. Not saying they are the same by any means, only that he had Shep every game along with Westbrook, and it made a difference.

  • Chris White says:

I hope he goes there and kicks Alabama’s ass, wins the west, ranks like 5th and wins a bowl and heads off to the league. That will save Sumlin’s job, all their fans will be cocky again and right when their heads are big and spending tons of money on their stadium the team crashes and burns again!! Good Luck TK9! ??

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well. He’s not a pro-prospect at the Qb position. I think he has other goals in mind. But, agreed, best of luck. I’d rather have him in the SEC than at KSU.

  • JB says:

This move makes sense in that there will be little competition and it’s close to home, but his skill set is suited much better for the KSU offense. Snyder adapts his offense to suit his QB skill set, but the QB run game is generally a staple. His running ability would be an asset he could use to great success at KSU. On the other hand, Sumlin is a good coach and has an effective offensive philosophy, but historically it’s the QB who has to adapt to the Sumlin offense, not the other way around. Trevor is not a skilled passer and he’ll have to do a lot of that at A&M.

I want the young man to be happy and have a successful final year. I think he would have that at KSU under Snyder’s tutelage. I don’t think that would be the case at A&M. I haven’t seen a lot of great QB development under Sumlin thus far. Manziel was already Manziel before Sumlin came along.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I might be the only one, but I don’t think TK9 fits Snyder’s big, physical QB between the tackles run game. Not sure TK9 can physically handle the abuse. He might do better down at A&M with their finesse game.

      • JB says:

Their QBs this year weren’t that big. They haven’t had a Collin Klein type since Collin Klein. And as Snyder adapts his system to his QB, I’d expect to see a lot of designed QB runs to the outside for Trevor.

        • JB says:

I just see him having more success at KSU than in an offense that requires him to do a lot of something he’s just not very good at

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Hubener is 6′ 5″. May be a little skinny, but he’s a big guy. Plus, did you watch them play BU this year? Seemed like almost every running play they would pull a guard or tackle and have them lead block up the middle and try to take out the LB. The QB would follow and take a pounding for about a 4 -6 yd gain. I just don’t see Trevor holding up to that for a half season, much less a full one.

          • JB says:

Huebner is tall but skinny. Klein was a tank and a much better passer than Huebener. Look at the QBs Snyder has had over the years: May, Bishop, Roberson, Beasley, Klein, etc. He ADAPTS his offense to their skill set. May was a passer, Bishop a run/pass guy, Beasley a passer first and a little bit of a runner, Roberson was a runner (and they used a fair amount of option for him), Klein was an inside runner and also a good passer, etc. Key word here is ADAPT. Snyder will, Sumlin won’t.

Also, TK9’s worst career injury came not by running the ball but by being sacked when he was trying to pass against Baylor.

    • diablodejalisco says:

if you remember, everyone was saying that when johnny manziel left aggie, they would just continue to be the same old aggie. and it has happened.

  • JB says:

I wonder if this means Connor is going to transfer too?

I haven’t heard anything about Murray wanting to transfer to OU, only Kyle Allen. I have heard Murray is the antithesis of TK9 in the locker room. That said, I sincerely doubt that both Allen and Murray would end up at OU.

  • j l says:

A&M could use some class, knight would certainly bring that. If he does go, hope he kicks some SEC ass!

  • OceanDescender says:

Austin Kendall will end up proving that OU doesn’t really need Allen or Murray. Wish all the best to Trevor knight, hope he continues to be alabama’s kryptonite in 2016.

    • DCinAZ says:

I’d rather just stick with Kendall to be perfectly honest.

      • OceanDescender says:

Same here. I really really like his highlights and numbers that he has put up too.

        • JB says:

Didn’t Allen and Murray put up massive numbers in HS too? You never know how that will translate into college. I am hopeful Austin Jendall is what we all hope he will be, but it is a bit premature to pencil him in as the successor to Mayfield. In the meantime, I don’t mind adding to the competition and depth at the most important position on the field.

If Mayfield goes down, we are in deep doo doo. TK9 is out the door and did not perform well vs TCU. There’s a reason CT was third string all season until after TCU. He has been less than impressive in his appearances so far.

          • soonersd says:

I have not completely given up on CT. He was a frosh that was put in to some bad situations last year and if i remember correctly he was without Shep a lot of the time. Hoping he has made some good progress since then.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

            This^^^^

        • DCinAZ says:

Yep. And Kendall actually wants to be a Sooner as opposed to a kid running from a poor decision he made.

          • JB says:

I have a soft spot in my heart for those who chose us from the get-go.

But the flip side of that is that TK9 chose OU and Baker Mayfield started off at TTU, yet Mayfield is tearing it up for OU. So I guess my only hard and fast philosophy is that if they make us better and help team chemistry and performance, I’m all for a player whether they are a transfer or signed with OU out of HS.

          • DCinAZ says:

Mayfield always wanted to be a Sooner from the get-go but never got an offer. He’s just a savvy kid who found his way home like those stories you hear about dogs getting lost and trekking 1000 miles across the country against all odds to find their owners. LOL!!!

          • JB says:

True he always wanted to come to OU but he admitted to getting bitter toward OU when they didn’t offer and he chose to walk on at TTU instead of walking on at OU.

I love the dog trekking 1000 miles analogy! Great stuff. I’m glad that Mayfield found his way back here. I just wish we could get him for 1 more year, but I’ve always been greedy that way. He is up there near the top of the list of my favorite OU QBs of all time. I am savoring every minute he’s here…he is SPECIAL.

          • DCinAZ says:

Yes he is. I hope he gets a shot at the NFL when he’s done here. I don’t agree with all the group think chatter that he has no shot of playing in the NFL. If Russell Wilson can do it, so can Baker.

          • soonersd says:

I just don’t see him having much success unless he drastically changes his style of play. All those backyard scrambles/risks (that make him so great) will leave him exposed to injury in the NFL. I will be rooting for him like crazy though, regardless.

          • bryan says:

Joe Montana had no trouble !

          • Jpsooner23 says:

That logic is solid. Since we didn’t offer he just had to go somewhere that did. Wait…..what?

          • Nate Broadus says:

It’s easier to win the QB job at Texas Tech than OU. At Tech the job was wide open.

After Coach Fratboy did him wrong, clearly he thought, “What the f..k — I might as well be somewhere I love, even if I don’t ever play football again.”

      • Jpsooner23 says:

So lets just pass on a 5 star guy who, at worst, gives depth and competition to a position known to need that huh? Good idea. Put all the eggs in the CT and HS senior basket, eh? Brilliant.

Now if the guy is a locker room problem like km has a high potential to be, then I agree, but nothing says Allen presents that issue. If he wants to come then it’s absurd to say we shouldn’t take him in.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I think you could be right. AK has been running a version of this offense for many years now so he knows the concepts, reads, and routes. But we do need quality backups at QB, so I’m not opposed to Allen coming on board. I don’t think we need him, but he could be extra insurance so to speak.

      • OceanDescender says:

Absolutely depth is critical. But by the time mayfield is gone, Robison will be on campus too and that at this point looks like a porentially incredible pair of QBs for spots A and B. Still I wouldn’t say no to Allen if OU was where he really wanted to be either.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

We don’t need Allen or Murray, that is true. But if the Coaches want them I don’t think it hurts, either.

      • hOUligan says:

As long as whoever comes in understanding fully he has to work, earn it and no whining if it doesn’t go his way. Sounds like OU has a good locker room this year and do NOT want to import a disease unnecessarily.

  • Dustin says:

Trevor has been through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows during his time in Norman. Through it all he has represented all the best qualities of what a Sooner and an NCAA student-athlete are supposed to be. There is nobody of higher character than Trevor Knight currently playing college sports. Whatever he decides to do, he deserves everyone’s unwavering support and well wishes. And, yes, if he happens to go to a school/program that I despise, I will be a very loud and vocal fan. He has earned nothing less from me. Best possible of wishes to TK9 in his future endeavors, whatever they may be.

Right On, Hear, Hear, and Amen brother!

  • Martin says:

I hope he stays another year. It will be a lot more fun to work towards another championship run rather than deal with the daily drama in College Station.

  • Jason Vos says:

Kyle Allen for Trevor Knight? Yes please

  • John Garner says:

Well, maybe TAMU will let him pull the ball and run it more than JH and OU did. He’s a better passer when he’s allowed to do that. If true, good luck to a good guy!

  • John Tolomeo says:

any chance bama wr transfer chris black looks here. hes a talented kid just had a lot of injuries and eventually recruited over. would offer big help next year

  • Josh says:

I hate aggie more than any fan base so I’d hate to see Trev in Aggieland but just wish the kid the best

  • EasTex says:

Little has been said about Adrian Hardy who committed just one month ago. He is listed as an ATH, though he was a QB in high school. Where the coaches decide to use him could be interesting.

    • Zack says:

I thought he committed in the spring

    • Zack says:

Have you seen him play at all? I’m curious just how fast he is because it’s hard for me to picture him beating corners and safeties based on his highlights.

      • EasTex says:

Haven’t seen him play, don’t know what his time is, but he sure is elusive.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

K and Alex commented on Hardy awhile back: –

This is a special football player. As Alex said above, he doesn’t have elite speed but he has elite lateral movement and perhaps most importantly instincts. This is the kind of player TCU would normally recruit to play safety in their 4-2-5. They are notorious for finding big athletic running QBs and switching them play that defensive spot. Those kind of guys, for various, reasons have the ability to give you a run stopping in the box type safety presence and a cover guy. They are also required to make the calls and coaches love guys who have built the trust of their HS coaches which is evidenced by the fact that they handle the ball. I’m sure the offensive guys will fight for Hardy but I’m hoping he ends up on the defensive side of the ball. – (Super K)

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

He committed back in March I believe.

    • DCinAZ says:

Interesting. He’s got some wiggle to him for sure. Wonder why he wasn’t more highly recruited. Project QB they can develop? Seems like Riley likes to run his QBs more than I thought he would.

      • EasTex says:

I have no clue. I’m still amazed at how many talented young players go unnoticed this day and age with all the means of communication.

    • Stephen says:

I think he camped as a WR, but plays QB at his HS because he’s the most talented athlete there.

  • hOUligan says:

Will just say I hope it all works out for the best for TK9. Class guy and a super Sooner. Do recall when Bell went through this very thing. Someone close to the family told me one reason Bell didn’t want to transfer was he didn’t want to show up and potentially take away the job some other young guy has worked and waited for. Another class guy and great Sooner. Made himself a TE and potentially a good paycheck.

  • Mason says:

No matter where Knight goes, I will be a fan of his. He is a class act!

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Given how he shredded Bama, perhaps TK relishes the idea of facing sec teams and their poor pass defenses.
