Trench Warfare | Rocky Top Edition

Hello there Sooner faithful!

While everyone no doubt is concerned about the O-Line, and to a degree rightfully so, I wanted to shed some light on the play of the guys up front. The good news being that it’s a talented group. The bad news is they obviously haven’t put it together just yet.

The first six drives on Saturday night yielded an interception and five straight punts. They had some success but after watching the tape, it just seemed like they couldn’t get out of their own way. Again, dropped passes in clutch situations and penalty after penalty seemed to get them out of rhythm.

On the very first drive, the Vols defense seemed a little timid and the OU offense was doing well. As you know, on the opening drive of the game Dede Westbrook drops a pass that resulted in an INT. The second OU drive had a big scramble by Baker Mayfield, and a long pass down the sideline to Joe Mixon only to be called back on a holding penalty. After that, it looked as though the Tennessee defense really started to settle in.

If the Sooners don’t have those two big mistakes early, I think you could make the argument the offense gets clicking and early and this is possibly a much different game. That didn’t happen, however, and we all saw the end result. Still, you can’t make mistakes and play behind the chains on the road in a hostile environment.

But with all that out of the way, let’s get into things. (Ed. note – Comments will appear below the picture they are in reference to.)

TW457

Here,  we can see a well blocked counter play with Jonathan Alvarez pulling around to the right. As K pointed out in a separate post, Alvarez looked pretty stout on the power plays, traps and counters. He’s gonna be a weapon pulling around. It’s a nice lane for Samaje Perine to get into here and have some success on the ground.

TW458

There were quite a few plays where OU had success running the ball early and the one above is no exception. Still though, it went Drive No. 1: Dropped Pass resulting in an INT. Drive No. 2: Holding negated the long catch-and-run by Mixon. Drive No. 3: Dropped Pass. Drive No. 4: False Start…and on and on and on. Like I said before, the line has some talent they just have to be more disciplined. Coming off of your own goal line is never easy, especially on the road, but they were able to get it out of there due to the run game.

TW459

Here again on the same drive, you can see they have some good space for Perine to get into. This is on 3rd and 3, and they convert with ease. Having Tulsa this coming week and the bye prior to taking on West Virginia, I’d expect that time will be used to help these guys polish up and get ready for conference play. The situation isn’t totally bleak, but being raised on the wishbone like most of us were, unless OU is cracking eight yards a play on the ground Sooner fans aren’t happy.

tw460

This was a nice drive that helped OU get out of the field position pinch they were feeling early on. Perine went for nine on this play, and it was nice to see Lincoln Riley not abandon the run game even though they struggled at times. While it wasn’t prolific, they’re really close to having some things open up.  With three first-year starters up front, it’s going to take some time to get it ironed out but the schedule sets up nicely for them to do so.  OU will need to get better every week, and I guarantee that if they don’t have it figured out by the time they go to Manhattan in October things will be tough.

tw461

Fast forward to money time, and I just thought this was a cool shot of Perine and Mayfield right before the first OU touchdown.

tw462

This was just a great play by Connor Knight and Josiah St John (and Perine with the peel back block). Yes, you read that right. You can see the 4th and Goal graphic at the bottom of the screen, and C.Knight (#89) is lined up at tight end just at the top of the OU graphic. Directly across from C.Knight, I want you to note how the DE is lined up. He’s shaded (lined up inside) over C.Knight ever so slightly. What this means is that pre-snap, the DE the OU offense that he’s slanting inside. He’s lined up in the gap, and the walked up corner standing on a 45-degree angle in the end zone has outside contain.

This is important because C.Knight and St. John have to know that the DE is slanting into the C-gap, and the backer is going to fill hard in the B-Gap or between St. John and Nila Kasitati. If they don’t see that right now, then Tennessee easily blows up the play.

tw463

If you check the small red arrow, that is C.Knight driving his man to the ground and getting a knockdown block on 4th and goal. You can see St. John putting the backer on the ground at the goal line as well. Perine’s now legendary fake and kickout on that corner I pointed out earlier and it’s a two-on-one situation in OU’s favor. Mayfield does a great job setting this up as he fakes outside only to then cut up inside of Perine’s block. I don’t know about you guys but on 4th and ball game if you can’t run the ball and/or you’re not any good up front, I seriously doubt the coaches are going put the game in the hands of the o-line. So they must believe in this offensive line’s ability.

tw464

I just thought this was odd. It’s clearly the final TD of the game, and another Houdini act by Sterling Shepard that simply left my jaw on the floor. If you get a chance, go watch this play again and tell me if you see #13 for Tennessee just stop. It’s crazy. If he’s going hard on this play, then he knocks Shepard out of bounds and it’s 1st and goal. Now maybe OU still goes on to score and gets the Zack Sanchez INT to ice it, who knows. But I guarantee you Tennessee would have preferred to take their chances rather than what we all know actually happened. Still…

tw465

What’s good for OU and bad for UT is Shepard taking flight and somehow staying in bounds for the next four yards. Again, the defender (#13) just stops on the play presumably assuming there’s no way Shepard can stay inbounds. At this moment he’s having that not so fresh feeling and he’s realizing that he just made a mistake that could cost them the game.  And it did.

What’s cool is the RBs are hitting the holes that are open. That may sound stupid but sometimes RBs aren’t patient or they want to bounce it out. I like their ability and really like how Perine will bull through the middle while Mixon will use that jump cut to get more yards on the outside. Appreciate it.

  • Josh says:

I haven’t looked at it at all but seems that Samaje is more effective coming out of the pistol. Just wondering JY if that was the case against Tennessee.

    • JY says:

It does seem that he benefits out of an I formation or pistol, but he looks good running out of any formation.

      • Josh says:

Thanks JY. And as far as that October trip to Manhatten, that’s 10/17… make sure the inlaws know there won’t be any trips to the airport that day because it didn’t work out so well last year lol.

      • Herman Bubbert says:

I wish we were an I team feeding Perine and Mixon, and allowing Baker to work play action and run some lead option. Think Baker would maximize his effectiveness throwing the football in that system.

    • Sooner_Ace says:

    • Maverick says:

Pistol stretch plays could be deadly with Perine/Mixon and Flowers leading the way. Cutback lanes, zone blocking, I want to see it!

LOVEEEEEEE TRENCH WARFAREEEEEE!!! Thanks JY, you are the BEST.

    Encouraging analysis. Thanks JY.

  • rainydaze114 says:

IMO, the O line has been good enough… not great, but they do enough to give the offense a shot at moving the ball(for the most part). Lots of room for improvement, but encouraging with all the fresh faces out there.

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

“The first six drives on Saturday night yielded an interception and five straight punts”

I don’t think enough has been said about Austin Seibert. A freshmen, in that environment, answered the call time-after-time. I was there in person sweating bullets watching him, cool as a cucumber, flip the field. It was an awesome performance + he was kicking to Sutton who had killed Bowling Green the week before. Confident kid, very cool. Best of all, four more years!

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Also loved what Bob said about him yesterday. They asked him to get more hang time on his punts with a little less yardage to cut down on the returns. They had 3 yards in returns I think for the game. Ended up being .2 yards difference in their punter (who was booming them) and ours in net total. Seibert was awesome!

    • rainydaze114 says:

Arguably the most consistent player through two games. Kickers aren’t known to leave school early either. That means OU probably has him for four years and he’s got a great shot at the all time scoring mark at OU. Impressive.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Absolutely. For a freshman to go into that environment and boom punts that kept us in the game – are you kidding me??? OUtstanding.

  • Maverick says:

Said it in the other post today, but JY did you see the Eagles last night? Had some really nice schemes.

How did we look on combo blocks against UT? We were pretty atrocious against Akron in that dept.

    • JY says:

I didn’t get to. We seem to keep our eyes upfield better than we did before. Keep in mind that we just graduated several veterans who were just better a year ago. I think we have the right idea, we just need to do it more consistently.

      • Maverick says:

They had a nice sweep play out of the shotgun where the playside guard and the center would pull and get to the second level, but then again, their center is an all-pro.

Thanks for the expertise as always. Definitely understand the youth we’re breaking in. At least they’re still physical.

      • soonermusic says:

JY, thanks for the great post. I’m a little late to the party, because I was out all day, but much appreciate your work. I think your point about the coaches attitude towards th O-line on “4th and ballgame” is very perceptive. It’s the little , often unnoticed things like that that often give us fans a clue as to how the season may turn out. Thanks again.

      • soonermusic says:

Re Tenn player stops: I think the Tenn defender stopped because Shep’s “stutter step” and head fake froze him in his tracks.

YES! Trench warfare is back! Love it. Great job

  • Birddawg says:

    My two cents:
Coach B and his guys have a lunch-pail mentality to go into the grind each day
Game reps increase the units collective growth
    Experience brings confidence
Confidence in making their calls and doing the technical things
Soon they will have a set of plays together to fit the strength of the unit
They grew as a unit last Saturday and will continue getting better each week as they go into conference play and make a run for a championship.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Despite all the woes of the first half, coming back to win at Neyland will boost confidence more than a 60 point win against Lamar could ever do, The team grew up three games worth last Saturday.

  • mizzOUstu702 says:

Just FYI, third picture is Mixon, not Perine. Love trench warfare, thanks!

  • Rick says:

JY, always love your articles. I’m a heavy haul, oversize load, owner/operator truck driver. Seems articles about the linemen sets well with me. Go figure!

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Well happy truck drivers week! I own a trucking company so we have lots in common!

      • Rick says:

I own a very small trucking company (1 truck, 1 trailer, 1 pilot car). My pilot car operator is usually my wife and my co-driver is my 7 lb. malti-poo. We keep it all in the fam.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

Mine is a small company too. My Dad started it in when I was in HS and I bought him out almost 5 years ago so he could play more golf. We are mom and pop, only have 10 drivers but I enjoy it (other than the paperwork).
          You be safe out there!

    • rphokc says:

you ever watch the ice drivers show on the history channel?

      • Rick says:

Occasionally on the history channel, but mostly in Wyoming and Montana personally in the winter tends to squash my desire to watch the show. Those are a special kind of person that enjoys driving in those conditions. My loads are very large, very expensive and do not belong on a frozen lake bed, (neither do I, for that matter)

      • Stephen Dale says:

        yes…………wouldn’t want that job…………….

  • Indy_sooner says:

Nice breakdown JY. I feel like the OL just needs time to bond and gel. What’s strange is having to go back and forth on the discussion of Shep’s eliteness…even with posters on here. There’s a lot more than height and speed and even at season start, it shouldn’t have been rocket science.

  • Randy says:

Where and who starts on the Oline vs Tulsa this week, how will J Thomas and A Thomas play vs a offense that will stress them in the defensive backfield.. Do we start with 4 LBs again or will it be Byrd, A Thomas and Parker ?

  • Sooner Ray says:

Thanks JY, good to see your magic markers again.

  • guest says:

“The situation isn’t totally bleak, but being raised on the wishbone like most of us were, unless OU is cracking eight yards a play on the ground Sooner fans aren’t happy.” – JY …Seemingly, the Wishbone was set up such that the running backs, back in the day, could dive forward for five yards. But I was much younger then, and more impressionable.

    • Jed says:

Not always. But it was designed to get you 3.5 ave per play…with virtually any of the plays having potential to go the distance. It is the ultimate body punching offense: the fullback pounds the middle until the D has to stuff the box and then the edges and passes are wide open. L’Deluge

  • 22dupree says:

JY, sounds like Darlington won’t go vs. Tulsa. Who do you will play C this week and what is the impact of possibly shuffling a developing line, if any?

    • JY says:

I’d put Alvarez at Center. Not sure what our interior guard depth is like, but I’d leave the tackles alone.

      • Jed says:

        Not Wren?

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

In that case we’re looking at Danley at LG..? I think Dalton is the backup at RG, correct?

      • roygbell says:

Dalton is the backup Center and I assume he is getting those reps. So, we take both Alvarez and Dalton out of the positions where they are getting reps. Moving them both around doesn’t make sense to me, but then I am not an expert.

        • roygbell says:

OK, I just went back and checked the depth chart again. Wren is listed as the backup Center and Dalton is the backup to Nila while Danley is the backup on Alvarez’s side.

I still think it makes more sense to use the guy who is getting the backup Center reps and that should be Wren.

    • Mike Reed says:

I tweeted in this question to Coach Stoops for his radio show this evening. Maybe they’ll ask it and we’ll find out who starts in Ty’s place vs. Tulsa.

      • 22dupree says:

Thanks for sending that to Coach Stoops Mike and thanks for responding JY!

        • Mike Reed says:

Stoops said Darlington should be good to go against Tulsa!!

          • 22dupree says:

Thanks for the update Mike. I thought the coaches show would be on here (in Ohio), but DirecTV didn’t show it. Our SoonerSports.tv coverage is kinda hit and miss here. I appreciate the update and I’m glad Ty will be OK to take on Tulsa! Boomer!

    • bmrsnr says:

  • Herman Bubbert says:

Good take. Despite the love affair with the Chuck and Duck, I think most reasonable people recognize that we’re going to have to be balanced – and get the ball in the hands of our best players, Perine and Mixon – to win meaningful games going forward.

    • ouwooferman says:

So if i hear you correctly trade the Chuck and Duck for the Ground and Pound. Now if we just had a wishbone QB to trot in.

      • Herman Bubbert says:

To note below, I believe – strongly – this offensive personnel would be best suited to the I formation, feeding Perine and Mixon while working Baker off play-action and running a little lead option. I am not now, nor have I ever been, an Air Raid fan.

        • Pokerman says:

If we had Baylor’s wideouts I might like it a lot better. Apparently our coaches don’t think we do because most of our touted frosh were hardly used.

        • roygbell says:

So you are saying chuck the current offense and run the traditional I with this OL and in this day and age?

          Ya, right.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

I would love to see a few I formation plays mixed in, especially with Ross, but don’t think we will. I watched the Vikes last night, and it was clear that AD is way more effective in the deep i then he is with the zone read stuff.

    • Jofield says:

I’m not sure what your gripe is here. We ran more than we threw against Tenn.

  • trusoonerA53 says:

I just hope this offense become George Foremanisk type style when he would strike it did not matter where he hit you it was punishing, but he loved the body blow. LRC appears to have this persona now that you all have pointed it out. No doubt that they are definitely mentally tough.

  • CS says:

This was interesting and never got a mention anywhere. But, in the first quarter, there were couple of plays where LR was using Shep from the RB position, never got a carry but started from the RB position to motion out wide. This option seemed very intriguing to me. What was the play about and what were they trying to do with that, any idea?

I would like to see Shep get few carries a game, it will be fun to see what he can do from that spot.

    • boomersooner says:

kind of how green bay uses cobb. get him touches anyway you can. line him up anyway you can and get him a mismatch anyway you can

      • CS says:

Boy, making me giddy. Lets save it for sexaT!! Show them how we do it.

        • Double G says:

As much as I love destroying sexaT, I’d prefer to save the wishbone for Baylor this year. They are due a thorough a** kicking and I wouldn’t want to waste it on sexaT!!

      • Walter Sobcek says:

        Just once. For Barry.

      • Daddy R says:

Hey, if the zone read and the veer can still have a place in this game, then damnit, so can the wishbone! I’ve said for years that this should be a staple set in the arsenal, just like the I-formation, just like the pistol, just like the shotgun. If you can make room for a “wildcat,” then you can damn sure make room for the wishbone. I’m not saying you run it all game, but you run it when the time calls, just like any other package. ANNND, there are soo many passes you can Play action from the wishbone, especially when you have backs with good hands. Hell, thrown shep or westbrook in as one of the wishbone backs and you have some dangerous, dangerous weaponry.

Please, please Lincoln Riley, please utilize the wishbone set in some form or fashion. Did I say please? How about pretty please? with sugar on top??

        Sincerely,
        DaddyR

        • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Some years ago Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams Gashed (that’s Gashed with a capital “goodbye”) the Patriots with the wildcat. Ricky was running a jet/fly sweep instead of being lined up in the back field but whatevs.

          Joe at QB.
          Samaje at RB.
          Sterling at the slot/z.

You now have three options, like a buck sweep. Barn (aka Auburn) does this everyday.

TFB is a beautiful, hot fudge sundae. And Trench Warfare is the cherry bacon on top. My favorite segment. Thanks, JY.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Me too. I love the breakdown of the blocking, it’s the most fascinating part of the game.

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Big on big. Mano a mano. It’s primal. It’s brutish. It’s beautiful.

        • Double G says:

After watching our O-Line, Ripkowski, and Perine steam roll people last year, I must admit I’m hooked. The high powered aerial attack we’ve had for the majority of Stoops’ tenure is fun to watch, but there is just something so satisfying about watching opposing defenders get buried in the ground as our RBs dash to the endzone. It’s just . . . Oklahoma Football at it’s finest!

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Oh man, bacon! And you’re right TW is THAT good!
      Thanks, JY.

  • PLAW0720 says:

Nothing better than trench warfare. I learn so much about the game with every segment – you have me counting numbers to see where the offense creates an advantage. I cut my teeth on OU WISHBONE football in the ’70’s. Every play was a body blow to the D and when the O-Line was clicking you had 4 backs that could take it to the house. One thing I saw on Saturday night was the O line standing around at the end of a play instead of finishing their blocks. It used to drive Dog Lawson crazy – I can still see him yelling at the TV. Just curious, is that an effect of air raid blocking schemes or were the big uglies just whiffing on some of the run calls?

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Watching Lott, Watts and Hollieway was like watching a magician. The triple O required reading a LB and a DE in the span of less than three seconds. A thing of beauty.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Your point about Connor Knight’s block illustrates the deal with Andrews. I hope some pass calls go to Knight so the defenses won’t know its run with Knight and pass with Andrews.

  • Jason Vos says:

Lincoln Riley has not impressed as of yet. I hope the job is not too big for him. He seems like he is a little in over his head thus far, wouldn’t you say?

“He elected to be the fake guy because he knew he could do the fake better, and he knew Joe could go out and catch the ball better,” running backs coach Jay Boulware said of Perine’s contribution. “That’s the type of unselfishness that this team has, and that’s exactly what we want. I know Samaje is a team player 100 percent.”

  • EasTex says:

Always appreciate you breaking it down for us, JY.
I would like to give a mention to the leadership Ty Darlington provides to the OL. I don’t know whose idea it was for him to do the quick head shake prior to snapping the ball, but the OL jumping penalties ended when he implemented that technique.
Also, I was a little surprised to see St. John get the start over Samia and was even more surprised at the improvement St. John made. I know Coach Stoops credited Dalton Rodriquez practice efforts for improving SJ’s performance, which also tells me SJ hasn’t fully tapped his potential.

    • JY says:

Athleticism has never been the issue. If he can put it all together he’ll be a good one because he’s not going to get out-athleted. He just has to learn how to use his hands and be technically sound. He did much better and got better as the game wore on last week.

      • EasTex says:

It seemed to me he moved his feet a whole lot better this week instead of reaching so much like he did with Akron.

    http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2015/3/20/8243681/the-attacking-8-3-defense-counterpoint-to-the-spread-option-offense-boise-state-BYU

On the defensive side of the ball, is this “multiple defense” what Mike Stoops trying to create? It seems like he’s finally building enough depth at every position and have the talent to be able to rapidly adapt the defense. Time will tell if those changes will yield the stop of the Baylor’s and TCU’s (and Tech and WVU and K-State and OSU…)

  • Kevin says:

Once the players all get on the same page and everyone plays like ONE (no individual whiffs or mistakes), it’s going to be dangerous. By many peoples assessment, we have tons of individual talent. The selfless team attitude is there. We have an OC that is walking his talk about utilizing the talent on the team (Mixon and Perine sharing a backfield seems like a no-brainier but I could see JH sticking with a one-back system had he stayed). Call me crazy, but if our team grows up quickly and learns/gets better, this offense could really hum.
