OU @ Tennessee – What I’ll Be Watching

Image via USA Today

* Creativity: I’m certainly not breaking any news in declaring what Lincoln Riley did with the OU offense this past Saturday against Akron was extremely vanilla. We know this. We also know, as does Riley and every coach on that OU staff, they won’t have the save luxury this coming Saturday in Knoxville.

With Oklahoma’s apparent issues up front, I can’t help but feel Riley will need to get fairly creative in this game. We all saw the Sooners struggle to run the ball against an underrated Akron front seven, but at the end of the day it’s still Akron. And we know the strength of this Vols team is also their defensive front, albeit more so the front four but still, so it’s probably fair to assume OU won’t simply be able to line up and run at will.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d be absolutely fine if that were the case. But after this past Saturday, I’m not quite ready to go there just yet. Especially against a pretty talented Tennessee front four.

* Passing to open up the run: There seems to be a general consensus that Tennessee’s secondary is pretty suspect when it comes to defending the pass. They’re coming off a game against an admittedly talented Bowling Green offense which saw the Vols allow 400+ passing yards, several of which came on big plays down the field.

In fact, Bowling Green had nine passing plays of 20 or more yards in that game. No other teams in the country had more (though two teams — La Tech & Tulsa were tied with BG at nine) in that particular state.

My point being, OU will need to take some shots down the field. Both because Tennessee appears to be extremely vulnerable to them and because, in my opinion, we have every reason to believe much like Akron the Vols’ defense will be looking to stop the run first and foremost.

I definitely do not believe deep balls need to be the primary focus for Riley and the offense, however. Rather I think the focus needs to be getting the ball out of Baker Mayfield’s hands quickly. Primarily for two reasons: (1) If Tennessee is able to get pressure on Mayfield with their front four, it may lead to him taking chances with the ball and we don’t want that. (2) I’d be fairly surprised if the Vols are confident enough in the secondary to be playing tight coverage on the LOS, thus playing right into what an ‘Air Raid’ offense is specifically designed to have success with, i.e. short, quick passes.

It’s cliche, I know, but if OU’s offensive line continues to struggle to consistently open up rush lanes, a ‘pass first to set up the run’ style of offense is easily their best strategy for success, no?

* Mark Andrews: To that point, is there anyone on this OU roster that is better genetically engineered (did I just make things weird?) to have a significant impact on this game?

I’m stubbornly refusing to allow Andrews’ lack of real involvement in this revamped OU offense didn’t come until the fourth quarter last week as Riley playing possum only to unleash Andrews as an impossible match-up this coming Saturday.

If success is to be found in the passing game, and specifically the quick, short throws as I referenced above, having a target the size of Andrews over the middle of the field on those short-to-intermediate routes could prove invaluable.

I put it out there on Twitter earlier in the week, but I just kind of have a gut feel Andrews has a big game in this one. Now I could easily be dead wrong, but this seems like a match up tailor-made for Riley & Andrews to exploit.

* Pressure & contain: I would suspect few OU fans reading this need a reminder as to the struggles past Oklahoma defenses have incurred when facing a mobile quarterback, though to be fair the same can be said for any number of defenses. Mobile QBs are employed specifically for this purpose, to confuses defense and capitalize on their ability to make plays both in-and-outside the pocket. And that’s exactly what the Sooners will be facing on Saturday.

Gone is the statuesque presence of Justin Worley from 2014, whom the OU defense teed off on for five sacks and countless other QB hurries. No, instead the Sooners will be facing a much more athletic threat in Joshua Dobbs. The junior signal-caller rushed 12 times for 89 yards (and a TD) Tennessee’s season opener against Bowling Green. And if you check his game log from 2014 after taking over for Worley, it only further shows just a capable of a runner Dobbs has already proved to be.

It would appear this is someone the Vols are perfectly comfortable running 15-20 times a game if need be, and that’s not even necessarily taking into account Dobbs making plays if a throw isn’t there and/or when the pocket collapses.

You need look no farther than OU’s post-practice quotes this past Wednesday from the defense, in which virtually every individual that spoke, be it coach or player, specifically mentioned Dobbs in some manner. Oklahoma is well-aware the threat he presents. The obvious question then being will they be able to apply pressure of their own possibly forcing him into some bad throws, all the while working to contain him in the pocket and limiting his ability to make plays with his legs.

* Linebacker & Safety play: These strike me as worth mentioning, but also no-brainers so we don’t necessarily need to spend a ton of time/words on them.

With respect to the linebackers – Tennessee is going to want to run the ball. Thus, it will be important for OU’s linebackers to play well in this game to prevent the Vols from having success doing so. Dom Alexander had one of the better games of his OU career last week, but he’s still a bit undersized and we’ve seen him have trouble shedding blocks when the opposing OL is able to get to the second level of the defense. Admittedly, it’s the job of the OU defensive line, at least in part, to keep those guys off the LBs, which is also something we’ve seen them struggle with at times.

With respect to the safeties – With all due respect to Akron, we learned absolutely nothing about Hatari Byrd and Ahmad Thomas in that game last Saturday. I’m not even sure this Tennessee offense is really equipped to exploit either as others will be further down this OU schedule, but I’ll be surprised if we don’t learn considerably more based simply on the fact the Vols will attempt to field a passing offense where as Akron, well, really did not.

* Austin Seibert: If this game is close, as I expect it to be, it’s certainly not inconceivable to presume special teams could potentially be the difference maker. Seibert’s first every OU game last Saturday has been met with rave reviews after hitting both his field goal attempts and averaging nearly 50 yards/per on six punts.

This young man definitely is not lacking in confidence, but it’s one thing to go out and drill a field goal or two in front of your home crowd compared to doing so in front of 100k+ fans most of whom will be screaming for you to miss.

Maybe the kid gets his own Uwe Von Schamann moment, or maybe it never even comes to that. Just something to keep in mind.

What will you be watching for Saturday night?

    I’ll be watching the OOOOOOO-line.

    • OklaSooner says:

I too will be watching the big boys upfront. Both O and D. Hopefully the young olinemen continue to progress and clean up some stuff from last week.

I’ve been waiting on Charles Walker to break out since last season and he continues to show flashes. I look for him to have a big game Saturday.

      • KJ1123 says:

I think the OL will play differently this week. The first week of the season is always tough, you dont have any recent film on the team you’re facing. I know their in the film room watching alot of film this week on Tenn. I think we will see alot more rotation this week out of the DL. Tenn has some good OLs we will need some fresh bodies in there Sat.

    • Angryinch says:

A key here is that the VOLS have a good starting front but the backups for them are a weak spot. If the OU offense can really get into a groove early and go fast the VOLS defense is going to get tired then it could get ugly and fast.

  • CPSooner says:

I think Jordan Evans will have a yuge game! His pursuit is really good and he’ll be all over Dobbs if he leaves the pocket.

  • Swanny says:

OT play will be huge. I don’t know how Tennessee can load the box when they see that Baker threw for basically 300 yards in just the 2nd and 3rd quarters. I agree about Andrews as well.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I read where Tenns right CB might be a bit of a weakness. If this is the case we can look for Sterling to have a great game.

  • Scott says:

Will Michiah Quick play in this game?

  • John Garner says:

I’ll be watching the O-Lne and our WRs. If our OL can pass pro then I don’t see how UT can stop our contingent of talented and fast receivers. They couldn’t stop BG. I don’t think they can stop OU. The question remains however: can our OL stop UT’s front? If so, we win. If not, long day in Knoxville.

  • OUWade says:

Obviously the OL is our main concern, but I want to see how we attack their line. BGSU got some penetration consistently, but couldn’t do anything with it. Also, I really think that Tennessee will play the receivers tight (at least early). If we get behind them a couple times like Bowling Green, then they might change that, but I think they’ll want to make Mayfield have to wait for his guys to come open as long as possible because their DL has to be licking their chops.

  • Jason Vos says:

Call me crazy but I think running Daniel Brooks in a game like this would help the offense. With sweeps and such.

I would also like to see deep throws to Dede Westbrook and Sterling Shepard. I doubt they can cover those guys all night

  • Fear The Magic says:

Im kind of expecting Riley to have some plays for Mixon that will both shock and awe the Tenn defense. Just so many ways his talents can be used.

  • SoonerFreak31 says:

I was watching the film against Bowling Green and I would make the Vols QB beat you with his arm. They ran the ball 75% of the time. When He did throw he wasn’t very accurate or consistent throwing. JMO

  • Jason Vos says:

Vols QB is a very dangerous guy. But if they keep running him its only a matter of time b4 he gets injured

    • SoonerFreak31 says:

I agree but it seems to be with his legs more than his arm. Very inconsistent throwing.

      • Jason Vos says:

Not true, he throws the ball very well. He is a true dual threat QB that is why he has me worried

      • Fear The Magic says:

His last year stats Comp. 63.3% pretty good
        TD/ Int ratio 9/6 (eh)

based on last year he certainly sounds like a decent passer if not great.

        • SoonerFreak31 says:

Thats what I am saying. He is solid but not great. Load up the box and make him beat you with his arm. Their running game is really good.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Then it really comes down to how much our DBs have improved which after the Akron game we don’t yet have a clue.
That would be the bottom line.

        • SoonerNutt says:

Those aren’t bad numbers for a first year guy. You really want >65% especially in run-heavy offense. 9/6 is OK for a newbie, but that ratio would not be OK for a 2nd year starter, especially if you are trying to go “ball-control”.

        • jimintexas says:

QBs that scramble often have guys get open, as the safety’s spend too much time watching the QB. Makes for big windows

    • ssh_f@yahoo.com says:

I think two things help us win – one is that our DE don’t crash too hard and let the QB get outside to often and starting with a very good passing game that opens up the running game. I would like to see them come out and throw the ball the first 8-10 plays. You get a defense on their heels with backs like Mixon and Perine and you are looking at some huge yardage.

  • Chris says:

    Soooooooooo ready for this game!!!

  • Bob Edwards says:

Here is what I am looking for from the Tennessee fan base when they realize we are running our full offense:

  • Randy says:

Jordan, is it legal to hit the QB on read-zone plays.. (Like it is in the NFL) ? If so, why not punish Dobbs on these with our LBs.. ?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Assuming it’s not blatantly obvious they don’t have the ball, perfectly legal. But Dobbs has decent size and is used to the punishment that comes w/ running the ball. Though I still see your point and I’m sure the coaches will be encouraging their guys to make him pay, w/in the rules of course, for each and every rush attempt.

      • Randy says:

Yes, of course hit legally I should have said that.. But why not hit him every chance you get (again legally).. It seems to be a big part of their offense and if a LB or S is up there already they are more than likely out of the play anyway if it is a “read” hand off (would be nice to get a big play though).

  • Randy says:

Jordan Evans/and or A Thomas on their TE, Wolf. DLs ability to get to Dobbs. LBs tacking Hurd.

If it’s raining do we run first, if not then get the ball to Shepard or Baxter on #37.. But don’t let #37 run downhill on run plays. Need to go deep with Mead. I don’t think Dahu Green is ready yet. We go as Baker goes.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

The key for the OU defense is to not give up big plays. Make Tenn march down the field first down after first down. I don’t think they can consistently do that. So really, the OU defense just needs to avoid the big runs and big pass plays. I know that can easier said than done, but that is how I would defend Tenn on Saturday. Contain, make Hobbs keep the ball on the zone read stuff, and punish him. Let’s see him complete that 15 yard pass on 3rd and 12 in the 4th quarter after taking hit after hit all game. I don’t think he can. I’d put as much speed on the field as we can (and still hold up against the power run game), and get after it.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

I’ll be watching the CB’s, more importantly their ability to handle WR’s in one on one situations. If they hold up, that will allow Byrd/Parker/Thomas to help more in rush defense.

and on offense, I’m very excited to see some of Riley’s in game adjustments and the opposite of my defensive point, can the WRs(not named Sheperd) get open vs press coverage

  • thebigdroot says:

Special teams. If we can make a play and contain the Vol return game, I think we will have a real good chance.

  • Matt says:

I want to see how our O-line does against what has to be their biggest strength and I want to see how our defense does containing a running QB

  • Jed says:

…what we do with establishing an outside running game.
…if it rains whether our trainers can get the shoes right. Good Lord am I tired of seeing our guys slip and slide!
…whether we able to establish a TE game
…Can our DL pressure the QB without getting burned

  • paganpink says:

I know one of the local weathermen predicted rain THROUGHOUT the game so that may well be a factor in play calling as well. It will be nice and cool for our guys who will be supercharged by the 30-40 degree temperature difference from the previous game!

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Looking at the forecast for Saturday, there is a lessening chance of rain throughout the game, around 20-30%. Still a couple of days for that to change, though.

  • Jonathan Grant says:

    Two comments I have:

    1. I disagree the offense was vanilla. I thought the offense was really creative. That doesn’t mean they weren’t holding things back, but there were a bunch of really great and creative plays and a whole lot of different looks.

    2. I’m surprised to hear you say Dom is still undersized since Schmitty worked so hard with him this offseason to lose 15 pounds. The staff thought he was overweight. Dom attributes this as being the reason he played so much better last week.

    • BobBarker69 says:

Undersized for a big time power 5 LB. Not Undersized for Dom himself. Dom is naturally undersized at ILB, he was playing heavier than he prefers last year.

We’ll see how he holds up to the physicality of their running game.

      • SamSooner says:

Agreed. Mike Singletary wasn’t your prototypical LB but he was very effective. Jesse Tuggle comes to mind also. Both had long and productive NFL careers.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I’m guessing, and I don’t want to presume to put words in Jordan’s mouth, that what he meant by “undersized” was that Dom continues to be knocked backwards by the people he meets in the hole.

It’s great that he gets to the hole, but would be “greater” if he could stone them.

  • Jeff says:

Just hope it is not pouring down rain Saturday

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

    I will be watching:
    1) Light’em up Joe – How will he handle the pressure of a big Game?
    2) Baxter – If the Vol’s secondary is suspect , how will he create BIG PLAYS.
    3) Dimon – How many sack’s does he have?
    4) Perine – Watch out for the freight train. CHOOOO CHOOO!!!

  • SamSooner says:

Here’s my take on this week’s game: Tennessee might very well win but I don’t think OU will be serving it to them on a silver platter. OU will come to play.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I don’t see how the Vols got better other than a mobile QB. Perhaps that is enough, but unless he can hit WRS like Boykin and run, I see OU winning.

  • SoonerFreak31 says:

If our D is stingy and doesn’t give up the big plays and the O is balanced then OU should win.

  • Jason Vos says:

My guess for the score in this game will be something in the region of 40-31 OU

    • Birddawg says:

      my prediction:
      OU 27-7

      OU stops the run (RBs).
OU forces dobbs to throw. Dobbs is a subpar passer.
Dobbs uses his legs to keep them in the game. We grind them out with dline/LB depth.
      Tennessee gets 7

Tennessee sells out on the run.
Riley gerts Mixon/SS/Anderews to burn LBers in middle open field.
Perine gets the must have small yardage.
In the end we get the big plays on offense.
QB: Baker is a better passer
RB: Mix/Perine is are better rbs
WR: Sterling is the better WR and he as more friends
OL: Wash.. both lines are young.
      DL: Wash.. Veterans
LBs: Including Striker here OU has more talent/experience/depth
CBs: Parker is the best pure cover guy on field IMO
      S: Push because ??
There are zero 2014 sec all americans 1st or 2nd and Zero 2015 Preseason all-sec on this Tenn team. Its all hype and guesses
I don’t need to tell you who we have.
      OU has the better players.
      OU is the better team.
Just need to go in with confidence and get into a fast start.
Only thing I see Tenn has is home field advantage…

  • metzker says:

I want to hear that Dr Leo Marvin had a pre game talk with Bob and the team then i know we will blow them out BOOMER

  • thebigdroot says:

Jason Sehorn ripped the SEC and their scheduling on CFB Daily.

  • Slim Sooner says:

Thanks for the nice write up, Jordan Esco. I will be anxiously watching everything you mention here. Hoping our guys play fiercely with aggression and attitude like they own the place since the venue seems to be such an important issue with so many.

    • boomersooner says:

right?! and then the “how dare bob stoops not say we have the best fans and the best and biggest stadium. we should make him and his team pay for not bowing down to our SECness” reaction is just grasping at nothing for bulletin board material

  • BobBarker69 says:

I might be one of the biggest homers around, but I just don’t get a good feeling about this. They have the mentality that this is their super bowl. Biggest game in 10 years. That is very hard to match mentally.

Combine that with our brand new offensive scheme and young players, I think this is an awful tough row to hoe.

Win the turnover battle, kicking game, and 3rd downs, and we’ll have a good shot. I hope I’m wrong. Boomer!

    • SamSooner says:

Bob, this win means as much to OU as it does to Tennessee. A win is the prize that both teams want. It’s a super bowl for both programs.

      • BobBarker69 says:

I disagree. I don’t think our players are taking it lightly. I just think Tennessee will have that extra edge that makes a huge difference.

We have the “it’s just another game” mentality. They and especially Jones, see this game as confirmation of what they’re trying to do. It’s a huge game for them. They know they’re not winning the SEC, so they need this game.

We can still meet all our team goals if we lose.

        • Mike Reed says:

And I disagree with that sentiment. What makes this game for us “just another game?” and how do you know that is the mentality of our team? Have you been in the locker room hearing our guys say they don’t care about this game? We went 8-5 last year and finished unranked. I think this game is just as much “confirmation” for what we’re doing as it is for them. We haven’t sniffed a championship in a while and that’s not OU football. We are looking to right the ship and get this win with some attitude. I like our attitude and our chances!!

          • Jed says:

I agree with you, Mike. We’ve also got a bunch of new coaches who have quite a bit riding on showing up in big games.
I don’t discount the chance that we lose and we’ve all noted a laundry list of problems that need addressing. That said, Tennessee is not without its issues and is at least as ‘beatable’ as we are. Given the two, I’m taking OU for the win but I’m not giving points or odds.

          • SamSooner says:

More good points. Well said and I agree.

          • BobBarker69 says:

Agree. I just think they have more pressure to win and I see it going their way. Obviously hope I’m wrong and not a popular opinion around here.

          • Jed says:

And I’m not poo-pooing your argument.
The pressure can work as a motivator….it can also lead to brittleness and collapse. I am totally in agreement that we need to come out and punch them in the mouth.

          • SamSooner says:

Nail, meet hammer. Striker doesn’t give a f**k about the SEC. If he has his say, the rest of the team won’t either.

          • BobBarker69 says:

Agree to disagree. Just my opinion. You don’t have to like it.

If you read all the quotes from the players and coaches on both sides, you’ll get a clear picture for who feels more desperate for this win.

And I have no idea where you get some of this. I never said our players didn’t care. In fact I said the opposite.

        • SamSooner says:

Except the last time OU had national coverage they were embarrassed by Clemson. National respect is on the line.

        • metzker says:

Our goal is to go in and kick the sh@#$%t out of them thats our goal

    • Slim Sooner says:

I don’t just hope you’re wrong, I believe we win this game. It could be tough and it may be raining, but we have a Perine and they just don’t. We want it every bit as bad as they do. Sooner!

Would take a lot for OU to leave Knoxville with a win. Being a homer though I’ll always go with OU

  • Brian says:

Bowling Green had almost an entire drive throwing to their TE in the flat…Tennessee had no answer for it. I know Riley saw that!

  • Jaymou13 says:

quick start. The Sooners can’t have six first quarter punts, like they did against Akron. I’ve re-watched the Zips game several times and first quarter drives ended on penalties, dropped passes, busted blocking assignments / execution and a RB self-tackle, when he slipped down.

Correct those things, show some ingenuity in getting Perine established and I believe OU will have a good chance to win.

  • Mike Reed says:

    Weather Forecast for Tennessee game.

  • Matt says:

some idiot is talking trash on twitter and wants a tennessee player to go for Striker’s knees and try to get him to tear an acl

  • EasTex says:

Having watched much of the game with BG I did not see a very impressive vols DL, they seemed very average to me. Now, with one of their starting DTs out I question their DL even more. The only times I recalled the vols getting good pressure on the BG QB was when LBs blitzed. The LBs are supposed to be the weakest unit they have, yet their DBs were torched. So color me unimpressed with their defense from front to back, despite all the recruiting the vols have done.
In addition, I expect to see much more HUNH this week and their suspect defense will wilt.
As for their offense, I am concerned with stopping their running game as it clearly is their strength. Glad we have many DL/LBs we can substitute.
The comparison has been made with the 2011 FSU game, including by me, in regards to a road game in a loud venue where the home team is talented just not quite ready to take the next step. To me the crowd is a non-factor(unless they rush the field), what I see as the biggest difference with this game and the one in 2011 is that FSU had a legitimate defense, the vols don’t.

    • Matt says:

Good to hear that their “strength” doesn’t look as strong as previously thought. FSU’s defense was legit that year. Bjoern Werner rag-dolled Lane Johnon a future top 5 pick multiple times that game

    • SamSooner says:

EasTex, I completely agree. I watched that BG and, I too, walked away saying, “meh.”

I don’t get the fact that a lot of people think OU will lose. I guess that must be from the 2014 offense has left a bad image of OU. This is 2015 and I see offensive weapons at every position, including TE.

I’m not worried about this game.

      • EasTex says:

My main concern is how we do against their rushing game and/or QB scrambles.
Also, we really don’t know yet how our DBs will perform against better competition.
For OU’s part I think the OL will be much improved and I do expect to see the up tempo HUNH much more, which will tire their players and create confusion and misalignments on their D.
On paper I say OU has this one, reality awaits. One can never know what the prolate spheroid has in store for us.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

Is it OK if I worry for both of us? I think we are the better team, but I think the margin of error is small. An early turnover or a couple of 3-and-outs would set the tone for this to be an uphill battle.

        • SamSooner says:

The margin for error is small. I see this game as pivotal if for no other reason than it will build confidence. If we lose, this game will have to build character. Both confidence and character will attribute to how the season concludes.

Oh, and you can have my lion’s share of worry. LOL!

          • Exiled In Ohio says:

On the other hand, I think the UT psyche is much more fragile than ours, so if we march down the field the first couple of possessions, I could see their confidence asymptotically approaching zero very rapidly.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Wonder if Shannon sees more time? I remember him being bigger and more physical vs the run than maybe the two guys we start now.

    • DCinAZ says:

BGSU finished 123rd in rushing defense last year and returned only 4 starters off of that unit. Their Dline averages 6′ and 252lbs. I’m not sold that Tennessee’s Oline has improved by leaps and bounds because they were able to get a push against that tiny defensive front.

      • EasTex says:

Good info that I didn’t know.
        Excellent point.

        • DCinAZ says:

Correction: They are CURRENTLY ranked 123rd. They finished last season ranked 99th in rushing defense and returned 4 starters off of that defense, one of which was suspended for the UT game.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Good stuff. Will be interesting to see if we can run it or not. But I don’t think it is necessary to win the game. Our O is pass heavy and the short stuff to RB’s is our “run” game.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Totally agree that OU will need to come out throwing, and keep throwing. If BM is on target, should have lots of success moving the ball and setting up the RBs to take control of the game in the 4th quarter. I expect at least two interceptions per team – where and when they occur will likely decide the outcome. Frank Shannon is a very stout run stopper and may have a chance to see meaningful field time and make some big plays.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

I think this game will be about momentum and confidence. The first couple of possessions for each team will set the tone for the game. If we can come out of that first few possessions even or ahead, it will bode well for the rest of the game. We just can’t afford to 3-and-out and then have them march down the field with their running game.

  • rainydaze114 says:

I have a feeling the Dobbs is going to get his and make some good plays for UT. Can OU do enough to shut down the rest of the playmakers on their O? If yes, this should be a nice W for the Sooners.

  • Stephen Dale says:

Tennessee will control the LOS and the game …

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

It will be our passing game vs their running game. I like our chances.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

sorry bud, OU has 0 shot at winning, might as well pack it in and head home

      /s

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

        Stephen, is that you?

      • ouwooferman says:

Dave dave dave. Your snarky is not lost on me. LMAO

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

Just a gut feeling that UT’s weakness against pass attack is a huge plus for us. And our run stopping ability is (was) a strength for our D. So, all things considered – we have good shot at winning.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

I agree, but think they start slow again but win 38-27

        • jonnyBgood says:

Me thinks we come out gashing them in the run game. They will be missing some beef up front and I think Stoops and Co. will want to get the run game going to muzzle the crowd a little. Let’s be honest here, we are only 1 game in and I think the run game will still be a huge part of our success this season. Perine and Mixon are just too talented to not break out and I think the OL will play much better this upcoming weekend. The early success will spell doom for the Vols as the passing game will flourish as a result of more Vol defenders coming into the box. Things just click this weekend and the D does enough to solidify the W. Sooners get their first marquee victory of the year and move up the rankings with a 38-17 victory in Rocky Top. Boomer!

      • Slim Sooner says:

        Helsley? Is that you? LOL.

      • Double G says:

Yep, that plethora of FRESHMAN that we played last year is going to annihilate us this year! No chance in Hades we can stop them from giving us a good and proper thrashing!
        /s

  • DCinAZ says:

Watching Alexander drives me nuts. He doesn’t lower his shoulder and drive through people when he tackles. He goes high and tackles them by their shoulders and rides them to the ground for 2-3 yards every time.

  • Bill Holder says:

I’m still concerned with our defense. Sanchez, Byrd, Thomas all scare me. They haven’t been tested at all. Zack is good for at least one bust per game and one could be enough in this one to make for a bad day.

    • soonermusic says:

I think Zach knows what he’s doing and will only take those sort of chances when the score indicates that it’s okay to do so. He’s a gambler, but, perhaps different from when he was younger, I don’t think he’ll be reckless with it. imho.

  • soonermusic says:

I will be looking to see improvement in the Oline, particularly on the double team blocks. I don’t want to see two guys let one guy slip between them, or let one guy push them both back deep into the backfield. It will be interesting to see what the great coach B is able to pull out of these guys this week.

I’ll be looking for all those “without the ball” things that make plays work.

I’ll be looking to see if Riley sticks pretty much with the basic plays, and relies on execution and “the system” to make it successful, or if he has a wrinkle or two up his sleeve.

It’s still too early to tell, but I still think there’s a chance that, as predicted, the experience on defense will continue to make a big difference on that side of the ball. If it does, we just might be in for a very enjoyable afternoon.

  • soonermusic says:

Based upon what I’ve seen, I have complete confidence in Seibert. Uwe had a great/legendary moment, or several, for sure, but I think Seibert will prove to be a much better, more successful kicker.

  • soonermusic says:

Looked to me like Byrd was a lot quicker about recognizing and getting over to help on plays than last year, but still needs to improve. I guess I’ll be looking to see how that develops this week as well.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

I don’t think Dobbs’ passing vs. our DBs will be the determining factor in this game, but we should still be learning a lot more about the safeties this week.

    • soonerthunder says:

Having more of a rush will also help him in coverage this year. Our DL was more a read and react than rush/pressure as I expect it will be this yr. That, along with experience, should help him this yr.

  • KJ1123 says:

Seeing Von Seibert kick that field good off a bad snap was really good to see. Kid is pretty focused and doesn’t seem to get easily rattled.

    • soonerthunder says:

Hey KJ, OU had trouble with the double stacked NGs, especially early. I suspect they worked on that this week, but other teams will see that. Personally, I don’t think other good teams are going to do much differently than they do. Tenn is more traditional which should make it easier to know who to block. What how you heard about the OL this week and the trouble with the stacked NGs?

      • KJ1123 says:

Honestly the OL watched the film once, got chewed out and then it was on to Tenn. The stacked front was basically a scheme Akron used because of the lack of “quality” personnel in their front 7. Tenn wont run gimmicks for the most part. Neither will any “good” team as you mentioned. The OL had a good practice Tues and took a bit of a step back yesterday. Today will be a scaled down practice but hopefully they’re looking sharp. I know the travel group has been putting in alot of extra film time. I think it will be a whole differently looking group this week.

        • Jason Vos says:

What happened with William Johnson last week?

        • soonerthunder says:

don’t you think the running plays themselves will look differently this week too? Different plays altogether

        • Double G says:

Really glad you are able and willing to share this kind info with us, thanks for taking the time to do so! The O-line is the biggest question mark for me in this game. In Coach BedenBOOM I trust, but having info like this helps A LOT!!

  • Matt says:

Jason Kersey picked OU to lose the game 34-31

  • guest says:

Maybe the winner of the contest will be the team who had the best field position, fewest unforced errors and most “luck”… that’s just the way the ball usually bounces.

  • soonerthunder says:

Jordan, I had a hard time believing Dodds would run on 15-20 called running plays besides running off of a called pass, but I went back to last year and against Vandy he ran 21x. Wow! I think they are taking a chance running their QB like that. He’s definitely a threat to run even on pass plays, so it’ll be interesting.

  • Robert Boone says:

I would love to see a fairly deep pass to Mixon motioning out of the backfield on the first play of the game. Whether a completion or not, it will certainly mess with their minds. I am assuming of course that the OL can give Mayfield a little time.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

I’d love to see Mark Andrews down the seam for 56 yards and a TD on their first drive(OU forced 3 and out to start game)

    • Wilson says:

RB routes out of the backfield with other combo routes are hell on a defense. At some point, someone has the responsibility to run a long way to make a play…may the best athlete win..

    • RBear says:

Just popped into my head that Mixon is an elite athlete CAPABLE OF THROWING(?)… that would be a sweet play; Mixon to Mead for a long TD!!!

    • EasTex says:

I would be content to see Dede blow the top off of the secondary for a long TD on the first play.

      • WilliamJack says:

UT wins the toss, elects to defer. OU receives the kick off, Alex Ross returns it for a TD! BOOM! welcome to Sooner Magic! This is followed by 3 and out by UT followed by a TD pitch and catch from Mayfield to……….. (fill in the blank).

Rain starts, OU pounds the rock. UT fans leaving at the beginning of the 4th quarter. BOOM!

OU wins by 30 points. ESPN makes excuses for the SEC.

    • Zack says:

Whatever it takes to get up 14 early is going to be needed. I don’t know stoops big road games by heart but I do know the way we jumped on notre dame a few years ago was huge to take their crowd completely out of it.
Their 100k fans is great but it will be a curse if we can get up 14 early and keep the distance.

  • RocketCitySooner says:

How does the suspension of Denny O’Brien affect this assessment?

  • hemisooner says:

I think we struggle to run the ball but we still beat them thru the air. Baker has a big game. OU’s Dline dominates an overrated Tenn Oline. They might sneak a couple of runs but overall we nail down the run game. The Big difference in this game is OU’s defense vs the run is better than Tenn’s Defense vs the pass.

    • soonerthunder says:

I think our run game is going to look a whole lot better this week. I look for different formations, instead of running side to side, more down hill. I think our OL will look better mano a mano against a traditional DL. Hoping so at least

  • RBear says:

Who is Tenn’s backup QB? They’re gonna need him.

  • guest says:

Tulsa World’s Guerin Emig’s prediction: Rocky Top 45, Sooners 41

  • KJ1123 says:

What’s the first offensive play of the game?
I’m going to say pass: trips, 2 clear out routes and one underneath route for a first down.

  • Dustin says:

    What I’ll Be Watching:
    A Sooner victory. 45-17.

Coach B this week: “DAMMIT….DO IT AGAIN!”

    http://oi56.tinypic.com/2nsm0k3.jpg

  • OceanDescender says:

I’ll be looking for Charles Walker to continue walking all over the opponent’s backfield like he owns the place. You don’t need a friendly, quiet crowd to be a sack artist. (Disclaimer: no offence is meant towards the almighty Neyland stadium. I bow in acknowledgement of your Volunteers’ ultra sensitiveness to opposing indifference!)

  • KJ1123 says:

So, this past Sunday I was driving by the coaches offices and I was with someone who said “That’s Mark (Andrews) right there”. And the first thing I said was “that’s a big kid”. I don’t think he’s quite as thick as Blake was/is. But he’s a good looking athlete, they need to use him ALOT more.

    • EasTex says:

Those big ol’meat hooks of his are going to make a lot of Sooners very happy.
That pass from TK when he had a tiny window to throw it through, Andrews just nonchalantly spun around snatched the ball with his big ol’mitts and kept moving up field.
      It was beautiful.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I think Striker will blow gas up their ass. 🙂

  • KJ1123 says:

Wish it was the eve of the game already, I wonder why there aren’t any Thursday games for OU. Not that I’m a fan of weekday games but it would obviously make for a short week. Also I’m glad there’s only 3 non-conference games then a bye.

  • ND52 says:

For those of you who wanna see the UT offense before Saturday

    • KJ1123 says:

That DT in that titled one was very slow off the ball.

    • Dustin says:

Pretty vanilla. Dobbs definitely tips his pitches.

    • Double G says:

After watching that, I’d like to think that OUr DL is faster at the point of attack and to the edge than Bowling Green’s (i.e. I don’t see them having a lot of room in the backfield or on the edge after the snap). I’d also like to think OUr DBs will not play that soft of a zone on their WRs (I see INTs in the secondary’s future).
However, two things we have to make sure we do on defense when we are on the field: 1) wrap up and drive through the ball carrier after initial contact when tackling and 2) make sure not to over pursue by breaking down before making contact with the ball carrier. I saw both Dom and Evans miss at least 2 TFLs/no gain apiece last week because they weren’t in control of their bodies prior to reaching the ball carrier. It was probably the most significant difference between them and Shannon that I saw when he was on the field during the game – Shannon always appeared to be in control of his body when going to make a tackle.
Other than that, I am confident OUr defense will play well enough to help get the W!

  • EasTex says:

    Dang, son!
Dede wasn’t even wearing a mouthpiece the other night, never has. (?)

    • Sooner Ray says:

Huh, I thought it was required, was in my day. I broke my nose on a guys cleat one time because I didn’t want a t – bar on my helmet……got that t-bar on Monday. 🙂

      • EasTex says:

I thought it was required, also.
Common sense should dictate it, anyway.

      • EasTex says:

I remember when those and “horseshoes” first came out, everybody thought they was bad-A**.
Playing pee-wee football in the 50’s face masks didn’t seem that new to us. Then one day a kid came to practice with his Dad’s helmet, it had a clear plastic face mask(did not cover the eyes) and had an oblong hole cut out over the mouth. It was some post WWII headgear that we all got a good laugh at. Poor kid never came back after all the howling and laughing.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Growing up I never cared to have more than the bare minimum. In my positions, RB and DB, I always thought having unobstructed vision was most important. Face masks were for the guys in the trenches. I quickly changed my tune after a foot to the face.

          • EasTex says:

I was always a lineman, with a few stints at LB and FB. Always wore the biggest mask available (which started with one bar) because I didn’t want to damage my gorgeous face. 🙂

          • RocketCitySooner says:

I changed my mind about mouth pieces when I caught a knee under the chin. Actually, knocked the snot out of my nose. Funny thing, it was my knee. I had my head down and was really pumping. A LB just pushed my head down. I was lucky I didn’t lose any teeth or a tongue.. Got a mouth piece the next day.

      • EasTex says:

History of the face mask, the Lucite face mask was 1953 and banned soon after because it shattered and was a danger.
        http://www.livestrong.com/article/363217-football-facemask-history/

    • DCinAZ says:

That’s just silly to me. A mouthpiece is a non-starter. You absolutely wear one.

      • EasTex says:

We lined up eagerly the day before practice started for equipment issue and to have your mouth piece formed. How he ducked out on that all this time and why is amazing to me.

      • Jed says:

I never wore one in six years of wrestling. When I regularly declaim upon the dumassery of young men, I speak from first hand knowledge.

  • trusoonerA53 says:

LRC said ie; our offense is evolving. I did not see the game, listened on I heart radio: + ( Anyway LRC lived up to his word. Our offensive line is not the problem. 12yrs Army “mind over matter”. We are OLU we have always produced great linemen that has pride, knowing you laid an egg on your 1st game, Sunday film embarrassed, hear everyone talking about your lack of performance, and finally Coach B ain’t happy. However LRC was able to instill confidence in this team during the game in making adjustments. SB NATION we are THE OFENSIVE LINE UNIVERSITY and we are coming freshmen vs freshmen in the trenches, oh and Orso is pissed. The Band of Brothers coming soon to Neyland Stadium to once again put the CES back in their place. We win expected, but it’s how we win, get ready for the show. Everyone has a year more experience that’s where we tilt the scales. ESPN your menace’s OU will be the talk. 2000 we watched that team grow every game and so will this one.

  • trusoonerA53 says:

Just saying pride will be shown from our linemen. We brag about being OLU yet hear no confidence from the us. If you truely believe in Coach B let’s start encouraging one another, do you all see what’s happening south of us? We have grown up thru some of the field issues that has prepared this team for tough time’s, it’s all about jelling together

Concerning the special teams game- I think we are remarkably suited to win it. Seibert, but also Nic Hodgsen! IF you can pretty much guarantee a touchback 90% of the time… Also, Ross, or our PR might take one to the house!

    • Chris White says:

Saw this, it’s awesome! Did Trey Millard not make the 49er’s? Don’t see him listed

    • Cam says:

I can’t imagine another college being able to make a better balanced offensive lineup. I would put the lineup as:
      QB: Bradford, Jones
      RB: Peterson, Murray, Williams
      FB Ripkowski
      WR Stills, Saunders
      TE Gresham, Bell, Hannah
      LT T. Williams, Stephenson
      LG Chester
      C Ikard
      RG D. Williams
      RT Johnson, Loadholt

  • Chris White says:

What is going on with Dallis Todd? Is he going to play? I know Stoops mentioned Michiah Quick will be available but Dallis Todd and Jeff Mead would be a huge mismatch on their corners.
