* Attack the edges – I’d like to see this start to become a bigger part of the offense. Some here may disagree, but I feel like during his time as a play-caller Heupel has shown a propensity of running the ball up the middle. At times, regardless of whether it’s working or not. And yes, I know the point is to wear them down so that even if it’s not necessarily working early, eventually you wear them down and in the 3rd & 4th quarters is where it pays off.
Now in a perfect world — or at least my perfect world — this would involve Trevor Knight forcing the defense to respect the zone read by pulling it back out of the RBs belly and keeping it once in a while. Because it’s abundantly clear teams are not respecting that now and simply crashing down on the back, leaving that edge with a lot of green grass Knight should could be taking advantage of were he allowed to.
But my motivation for wanting this is also a bit of planning ahead for the following week in Dallas. Mainly because I think OU is going to have a very difficult time running the ball up the middle against Texas’ Malcom Brown.
* Trevor Knight – To the point above, I’ve seen some speculate that for some reason they believe this will be the game Stoops & Heupel actually open it up and let him run the ball. I sense this is something we’re going to hear before every game when/if they every let him do it, because no one seems to have an actual reason why they think this will be the game, i.e. they’re just trying to guess right.
Sticking with Knight, will he able to avoid turning the ball over against a defense you know is going to try and confuse him with their looks pre-snap. We all know Gary Patterson is a defensive mastermind and that Heupel can get into a rut at times calling pass after pass after pass. On pure talent, OU should absolutely win this game. But as with every game, turnovers can easily be the deciding factor. So if Knight and/or OU are turning it over, TCU could make this a much closer game than it probably should be.
* Eric Striker – Based on what I’ve been able to see from this new version of the TCU offense, OU may have to make a concerted effort to allow Striker opportunities to get after Boykin. Everything TCU does in this new scheme is designed to get a LB, like Striker, matched up on a WR in space. And for all his talents, that is not a match-up OU should want to repeatedly seem him in Saturday afternoon.
* Steven Parker – With the four & five wide sets TCU extensively employs, this could be a game we see much more of the talented true freshman than we have in recent weeks. After some early playing time in key situations, Parker really hasn’t seen the field that much these past couple games. So it would be nice to get him back out there as this TCU offense really plays to two of his strengths: covering in space and tackling.
* Tackling – In fact, let us stay on that last point. Any time you play a team that runs a spread offense like this, let alone one with a mobile threat at QB like Trevone Boykin, consistently wrapping up and not allowing cheap YAC is always going to be a major key in the game. This isn’t necessarily something I believe the OU defense has struggled with (though there might be an exception or two), but this is the type of game and offense where missing a tackle here or there that extends a drive can wind up making a big difference.
* Blake Bell – No reason to believe it based on the similar lack of involvement this year — despite repeated assurances that wouldn’t be the case — from the TE position as we’ve seen in years past, but I just kind of have a gut feel says Bell is going to have a big game. And by ‘big game’ I don’t necessarily mean 10 catches for 100+ yards and 3 TDs. More so something like a key third down conversion or two, hopefully at least one TD catch, or maybe they even get crazy and run some kind of trick play. I don’t know, like I said, it’s just a hunch. And I’m sure I will be wrong.
* Ahmad Thomas & Zack Sanchez – For two different reasons; coverage & health/tackling. We’ve seen Thomas struggle at times covering in space. Well, he’s going to be asked to do that in this game, a lot. If he’s any kind of liability, TCU will obviously look to exploit it for as long as they’re allowed to. I’m not saying Thomas will struggle, he may very well wind up having the game of his life. I’m just saying it’s something to keep an eye on.
And at this point you don’t need any type of reminder for me regarding either of the points above when it comes to Sanchez. But until we see otherwise, it’s going to be something people continue to worry about/harp on.
* Jordan Phillips – Maybe it was just me, but I didn’t think Phillips looked his normal dominant self against West Virginia. Admittedly, that’s somewhat of an uneducated opinion on my part as I’ve yet to go back and watch his play specifically. I just felt like in other games, even if he’s not making a tackle you can’t help but notice his presence in the middle of that line being the disruptive force we know him to be. So maybe I’m being overly critical regarding the WVU game. And, if so, I’d gladly welcome anyone to tell me to shut up because I don’t know what I’m talking about.
All that said, if Phillips can be said disruptive force, it can throw a wrench into pretty much everything TCU will be looking to do offensively in this game. Phillips’ ability to get pressure up the middle and collapse the pocket creates a bevy of opportunities for the guys around him and helps to close some of the run lanes Boykin would normally be able to take advantage of even if the initial pass play breaks down.

In regards to Blake bell I expect them to at least use the bell dozer package once or twice in short yardage situations and I expect those to be runs and possibly an end around or some sort of handoff. I think heupel would be smart to continue to expand his play calling with bell lined up somewhere in the backfield whether it’s qb or fullback. I think he could get pretty creative with bell and knight on the field at the same time. But then again I thought the same thing last year with any combination of bell/knight/Thompson and especially last year with bester proving to be someone you could use on trick plays throwing the ball.
I’ll be watching Thomas and our WR’s. We need someone to step up and play bigger. Early on it looks like that person can be K.J. but I need to see more out of him.
I don’t agree with the argument that Bell hasn’t been as involved, I saw him and Rip/Flowers in 60-70% snaps in the Tenn and WV games, involvement in the throwing game is predicated on how good he runs routes/gets open, which I think he is still in the process of learning, hope to see him involved more in that as we progress deep into the season. Noticed Philips wasn’t as dominant, but I also give credit to the WV Oline and the constant double teams on him.
I’d also say it was the WV O, not just the OL. The way they got rid of the ball and never gave up on the run (they’d run on 3rd and 10!). I think the coaches told Phillips to play the game he played, and he stopped the run, just like he was told to.
I read the comment more to be about the overall lack of TE use at OU since Gresham…
I am not sure since Jordan says “similar lack of involvement this year”, which I argue is not accurate.
Agreed. JH just doesn’t incorporate a TE in the passing game to this point. Gresham was under Wilson who used him but JH has a different agenda. Stoops said Bell ran great routes and has a knack for getting open. However, not one attempt to him at WV.
The argument is NFL uses TEs in their game plan every week and they are being drafted higher and higher due to size and speed. We don’t and it has the natives restless.
I am looking for Jordan Phillips to really push that pocket and allow Striker, Grissom and Co, to come off the edges and get to Boykin, early and often.
Also looking for Dom and Jordan Evans to not allow Boykin or the TCU RBs to get to far into the second level.
If the pass rush can get to Boykin quickly, make him uncomfortable, he will make mistakes…..i.e. bad passes, turnovers.
Because it’s abundantly clear teams are not respecting that now and simply crashing down on the back, leaving that edge with a lot of green grass Knight should could be taking advantage of were he allowed to.
This is exactly why they will start doing it. All this gnashing of teeth and wailing about misreads is BS. From a tactical standpoint you want to make your straight handoff look just like your read. They have. Now, when it matters, they change.
I listen to so many of these call in show yahoos screaming the world is ending Knight forgot how to run the zone read. These idiots couldn’t run a game plan to save their life.
I think you’re right. Against Patterson’s defense we will almost certainly need TK to actually have some keepers. And with the game film they’ve been studying it just hasn’t been there. Perfect time to startle them with just how quick Trevor can be- just as we did against Alabama and others last season. Hey, you got any good brains on sale?
No. Patterson isn’t stupid. He is going to plan on Knight keeping the ball.
He can’t cover everybody. Somebody will get open just like in the Alabama game.
It’s ridiculous I listen to those too and I’m just like why do you want your qb to run 25% of the time? The same people are the ones complaining about the passing game not being good enough. So which is it, do the fans want knight running all the time or do they want him slinging it around like Sammy B? My guess is it’s both and those fans will still be calling for mayfield to get eligible to push knight.
That’s why I made the comment the other day that I believe ou will/could be 12-0 and fans still not be happy with knight. When at that point I believe he would be 17-0.
Shouldn’t listen to those knuckleheads on the radio. I remember what someone once said (I can’t remember who) “Can’t we have just ONE Thanksgiving without you all fighting?”
Yep. No reason to put Knight at risk, or show our hand, when we haven’t had to. If we struggle to move the ball, against TCU, or UT, or whomever down the road, you can bet JH and the OU offense will open up the playbook a bit more. But why do it before you have to? Why give good tape to Patterson, or Strong?
And I think one thing people forget is that knight didn’t have to run in order to beat Alabama. I remember one carry and I’m sure he had a few more. But other than that we beat them throwing the ball downfield.
We also had WRs who became veterans that year. Bester had some GREAT grabs. Woods had a GREAT grab. All in all, TK9 just went off on Bama…hopefully he will grow into that as he gets older and can duplicate it more and more. But my favorite play was the broken play where Knight scrammbled to the sideline and hit the WR in the endzone. THAT play was the play of the game IMO.
I personally think it is good that they are not running too much of that read-option plays. Let TK throw the ball, get familiarity with his receivers in a game setting, and run the ball with this tough OLine, get the backs plenty of reps, so they see the right holes and you have game film to critique yourself. Sometimes defenses take out the read-option completely, like Bama did in the sugar bowl or KSt did to Auburn, at that time the QB has to throw from the pocket to secure wins, and giving TK reps helps in that regards.
I agree. Besides, they are practicing the read-option every single day in practice. When they need it, they will use it. Why risk TK getting hurt and destroy our NC chances. Fans don’t know a thing about winning. Stoops wants a NC this year. TK hurt just about kills that possibility. We’ve been jumping on teams early and coasting. I’m fine with that. All I want to do is WIN (like Stoops), not play fantasy football like fans.
I’m completely fine with OU being strategic about when they run Knight. I also have no problem with not using Knight in the run game as long as they don’t need it. Where I would have a problem with it is if a game comes along where the rb’s are having trouble and Knight’s feet still arent’ utilized.
I would also like to see more bootlegs. I think Trevor is at his best out of the pocket and would like to see that ability utilized as more of an asset.
I think they should use more bootlegs also. One knock on using bootlegs is that it cuts the field in half but if you use the right kind of route combos then it can be successful plus you get a chance to see if the defenses are respecting knights ability to run or if they are respecting his ability to throw a bomb over the top.
Exactly. Even if he has no plans on running, getting Knight out of the pocket at least gives the defense a decision to make.
They did it PLENTY with Paul Thompson. That was his strength. You just have to pick your spots because it does close off half the field. BUT, yes, we should be doing it some with TK9.
Amen!
That’s what I want to see also. Get Alex Ross on the edge to utilize his speed. Toss sweeps, screens, whatever we can do to get his jets in the open field.
Don’t forget getting Flowers, Rip and Bell as H-backs in the flat….Makes the defense cover something else to keep them guessing.
I think Geneo Grissom has another huge game this weekend. Striker will be Striker. But the guy I really want to see play a heck of a game is Charles Tapper!
I’ve noticed Tapper is getting a lot of double teams this year. Other guys get the glory, but he’s allowing them to by getting double-teamed, IMO.
I want to see the zone read with Trevor keeping it for a quick pass or rolling out to pass. I’m not hung up on him not running. However, if he did keep it, this would expose their LB’s from a chip block for a quick completion. In turn, this would open the inside running lanes. Also, IMO this plays into Trevor’s natural ability of throwing in space or outside of the pocket.
Mike Stoops mentioned this week that Jordan Phillips can be utilized some at DE. Something I said to look out for early b4 the season started.
Might be wise to play him at DE some, so he does not continuously have to fight double teams in the middle with his back issues.
Do we have another DT playing well enough to move Phillips? We already have two DE’s playing at a high level.
im ready to see Jordan Evans and Dom Alexander have a big game, they’re both over due
Curious, what have they not done to this point. I think they have played outstanding and getting better every game. Their reads are quicker and they have better gap integrity. All I care about with those two is their health.
Yea they’ve been solid definitely, but game changers? idk
Striker is a game changer. Not many of those around so solid is really good.
This is Jordan Evans game, with his speed he will make sure Treyvon Boykin does not get to free running the ball
Agreed!
I’ll be looking for a big play action pass to either Flowers or Bell. With how dominant our run game has been you should be exploiting that type of offense, especially when we have guys who can catch out of the backfield
I have so many differing thoughts on Knight and the zone read. From what I’ve read from MULTIPLE sources, most of these “zone read” plays are designed gives. It seems to me that our staff, up to this point, has not been worried about losing a game. With TCU, we are heading into the heart of conference play. And I think now is the time where the playbook opens up. Maybe not completely yet, but it’s the start. The reason? TCU’s defense! Also, I think the coaches want to prepare for the brunt of conference play. That’s all guesses from me at this point, but it would make sense. I would allow Trevor, very early in the game, the option of keeping the ball on the zone read and see what that does to the defense. It should open up all kinds of things for the run and pass game. Also, Getting Flowers and Bell the ball on some seam routes (for Bell) or wheel routes (for Flowers) could make for some big yards. All in all, I’m freaking STOKED about this game!!! BOOMER!
I don’t think that this is an easy game to plan for because of the mobility of the quarterback. If OU’s defense can disrupt the play enough to force him (Boynkin) into pressure or making bad throws it will be a long day for TCU. If they try to keep Trevor in the pocket and make him throw it is still going to be a long day. My guess is they try and stop the run and read option by putting extra men in the box. This is were I believe that TK’s ability to run the read option 5-10 times will allow the play action to work. If the coaches are worried about him getting hurt they can always tell him to slide.
I’d like to think that we’ve been “holding back the offense” and “will open it up” against TCU, but I just don’t believe that. Sure, there are plays we haven’t seen, but I don’t believe we’ve been playing vanilla and will all of a sudden show up with rocky road.
I’ll be watching to see if anyone not numbered “3” can get separation and if number 9 can see them. As our level of competition improves, so too does our need for these two things to occur, if we’re going to remain undefeated.
Why not, we do it every season. Usually we wait for the UT game. I saw a running play against Tennessee that we ran several times with much success, that I don’t recall seeing in either of the first two games. Remember the AD counter we ran against UT to get off the goal line? Remember the play Q used to score many of his TD’s against UT? I’m sure there are dozens and dozens of other examples, but those are the two I really remember.
I think this offense has a lot more it can do.
I hope so. I know we have formations and plays that aren’t seen until certain games, but I just haven’t seen any major changes…like all of a sudden running the QB 8 times…or all of a sudden making the TE a weapon…or these type of major changes recently. I might have thought the first half of the WVU game would have been a time for a few, but the coaches know much better than I.
I hope you are right, but then again, as long as they win it doesn’t really matter to me.
I’m with you, I’m starting to think there is no “vanilla”, but that this is it…If there is some additional offense (other than the QBZR), I think we won’t see it until Baylol. Not expecting it against tCU, or texsa.
I’ve seen the comment: “don’t use the ZR until we really need it.” I have to disagree. If we wait until the 2nd half when we’re down by 7, and then decided we better use it … guess what, it’s too late! We let TCU’s D crash down on the RB the entire 1st half because they know we aren’t going to let the QB run, and then when we get behind they will be expecting us to finally go with the QB run. We need to run TK early (not much just 1-2 times) so we aren’t so predictable. But if we hold off on QB run till we’re behind, it’s not going to be as effective.
Maybe none of this matters. Maybe TK has the hot hand or maybe the run game goes without needing the QB run. But waiting until we’ve already got bogged down to play one of our best cards seems pretty risky imho.
1) Still watching for a shutout! Don’t know that it’s likely to happen, but I’m still watching for it.
2) Perine to climb the rushing charts. While he leads the BigXII, nationally he’s still just 29th in yards per game and 38th in total yards rushing. I expect him to climb towards the top.
3) Bell to have multiple catches; he can’t continually be left wide open.
Unless it’s a low scoring game I’m ok with not having a shutout. Get a big lead and then throw in the 2nd string to get some reps.
I’ll be watching for Jordan Smallwood. He crept into a few formations in the WVU game but wasn’t asked to run many routes. I think this could be game where we may see a little bit more of him, based on the formations used in WVU game, play action just makes sense knowing TCU will be keying in on the run game.
Heupel has the propencity to throw the ball. Heupel has the propencity to run the Mike Leach offense. I thought we had switched to the zone read. Obviously, I was wrong. Unfortunately, we do not have Sam, Landry, Jason or even Heup slinging the ball. We do have the perfect QB for the zone read. We went flat in the 2nd quarter at WVU. It was the result of 6 consecutive passes. I completely disagree with the idea we run up the middle too much. At this point, I will take all of the additional runs inside or outside Heupel is willing give us.
I want to see the tight end and running backs involved in the pass game to back people out of the box. On defense I want to see us cover tight. I think they plan to get the ball out quick to beat our pass rush so we can’t be lined up seven yards off the receivers.
agree on phillips ……..he wasn’t his usual dominant self vs. wvu.
since i believe we will struggle offensively , his play vs. tcu will be critical .
