Sterling Shepard Drafted By NY Giants

Now former Oklahoma wide receiver Sterling Shepard’s NFL dream became a reality Friday evening when the New York Giants selected him with the No. 40 overall pick.

The idea of pairing Shepard with Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz has to put a big smile on the face of Eli Manning.

Congrats to one of the all-time greats to ever don the crimson and cream!

One of the greatest to ever wear a crimson & cream jersey. Goodluck with the Giants Young Shep.

  • Birddawg says:

Good qb, good organization, has Odell on the outside. It’s a good fit.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Sterling drafted ahead of three Bama players?

    Can’t be.

    I don’t even know what’s real anymore.

    • 22dupree says:

And ahead of both Ohio State receivers … Can’t be. Must be a misprint!?

      • Zack says:

And I think the Giants feel fortunate shep stayed on the board that long. I thought he would go around 45. I’d much rather him go to the Giants than the Titans.

      • OohRah Mama says:

AND picked ahead of RB Derrick Henry. HA-ha.

(I know, they don’t play same position. I’m still happy Shep went before him. So there.)

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

He is in OU’s top three of all time…Broyles, Shep, and Clayton. Shep never dropped a pass…

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

So many CBs taken ahead of Sanchez…should have stayed and gained 10 lbs.

    • OohRah Mama says:

And another year of experience. I sure wish him the best, though. A sweet kid who did us proud.

      • rphokc says:

        mama……you watchin’ your blues?

        • OohRah Mama says:

Haven’t had the gumption. Last game I tried to watch, Blues were playing poorly. Must have been my fault… πŸ˜›

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

No doubt. Not talking about his character. I know he’ll make a team and ultimately the only thing about being drafted early is money. Look at TJeff, starting and making a nice living in the league and was not drafted. I just wanted Zach to get another year in (selfishly).

    • Zack says:

He should be off the board by now. I’m higher on him than others though but his production speaks for itself. There’s plenty of teams that don’t leave corners on an island and in the NFL he will need a safety over the top.

  • rphokc says:

hope shep pisses off jerrah many times over

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

    Congratulations to Shep!

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Former OU back Brandon Williams drafted ahead of Zack Sanchez as a CB! What’s going on here?

    • ccmosaic says:

sanchez should have come back for another year. Dumb kids thinking they will get paid and end up getting nothing.

      • akryan says:

Absolutely. Unless a kid is a lock in the first round, they usually should come back for another year. Sanchez had a lot of INT, but part of that was because teams threw his way a lot because he also had a lot of missed tackles. If he came back and showed that his tackling was improved, he would have gone a lot higher. Someone is going to get a steal with Striker. He’s 20lb too light, so everyone is overlooking his production against current NFL players and all of his intangibles.

        • J.r. Kamm says:

Looks like Striker is going to the Bills. Shannon and Neal from what I’ve heard are going to the Broncos.

      • Mark_in_VA says:

The argument I’ve seen is Zack has maxed out his size. Apparently they’ve been working hard to get him to gain weight and he just can’t. So the odds of him making the strides necessary to elevate his draft status were very slim.

Not sure I fully buy it, but that’s the argument I’ve seen made. Anyway, without getting a better draft, his best shot is getting that extra year of playing time at the next level and see how/if he grows into it. Again, I have mixed feelings. I can see both sides.

        • Clint Lenard says:

Anyone can gain weight if they try.

          • Mark_in_VA says:

While technically true, I don’t think they were looking for the J.T. Thatcher plan.

          • Clint Lenard says:

Silly reply. Anyone familiar with nutrition (even the basics) know that a healthy individual such as Sanchez could gain lean muscle if they put in the effort and documented their daily routines, as well as following their plan(s) outlined for them.

          • Mark_in_VA says:

Right. Sanchez was just lazy and undisciplined. That the story you’re sticking with?

          • Clint Lenard says:

Meh, not in the mood for arguing with you about a topic you’re unfamiliar with.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Anyone can gain fat. But not everyone can put on a lot of muscle weight.

          • Clint Lenard says:

Define “a lot.” He needed to gain 10-15 lbs of muscle. Yes, ANYONE that is healthy can achieve this, if they tried… but much like fat people losing weight, it comes down to effort.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Not so. Depends entirely on your metabolism, hereditary factors, and other biological variables.

          • Clint Lenard says:

AS I CLEARLY STATED, anyone that is a HEALTHY, normal functioning person (see “NFL athlete”) can do so. I’ve been around this all my life, but you keep on with your internet argument if it makes you feel good.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

And I have studied exercise physioology for years, Clint. But whatever. You seem to be a know-it-all. Bye now…

          • Clint Lenard says:

You studied exercise physiology for years, yet you argue just to argue and then call me a know-it-all, as if I argue over here a lot lol Ok. Maybe you’re just arguing with someone who knows what they’re talking about due to their background? Nah, couldn’t be it.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

What did you not understand about, “Bye now?”

          • Clint Lenard says:

I see you misplaced a comma as well.

      • Buddy W says:

The “dumb” kid just got drafted by Carolina. I think he’ll be a good player. You’re just salty bc he didn’t come back for senior season. That’s selfish.

        • PLAW0720 says:

That’s not the way HCBS looks at it. Zach is not getting taking care of momma money. If he has his degree, then it’s an okay move. But, Zach should have come back to improve his draft position – he would have made more coin in the long run. It’s not selfish wanting him to come back, it’s wanting the best for him for the long run. HCBS speaks at Al’s sports journalism class. He was asked about this very topic and he was very clear about his advice to players. I have the recording and it is very insightful. Boomer!

          • Hooknladder says:

Not really. Zach was no longer the best CB on the team and his flaws have not changed in 3 years- they weren’t and aren’t changing now. He made the right decision.

    • CcrBoomer says:

Lack of physicality is the biggest reason, Zack can cover but would be a liability at the next level .Im just shocked OU’s replacement for Zack is 5′ 10″ and 160 lbs.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

I was impressed with Zach’s upper body strength in the bench press. Seems like that would compensate for his leaner physique. Deion Sanders was never known as a very physical player and he seemed to do OK.

        • Brien Brown says:

Poor tackling and bites on the double move and gambles too much is what I saw on a scouting report on Zach, lot of guys going before him are bigger and more fundamentally sound.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

That’s funny. His replacement is smaller than he is. Perhaps PJ will win the job…but remember as far as college ball, Zach was fine at his weight and height. We are talking why he was drafted low…

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Ohio st ruled this draft 10 players by three rounds. This means they have lost a lot. OU 40 OSU 27.

    • akryan says:

Seriously. They’re not done yet either. They’ll still have some more players drafted tomorrow and some FA. They’ll literally lose an entire squad. I have no doubt that they’ll reload more than rebuild, but you still can’t lose that many great players and be as good the next year.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Congrats to Sterling. Wishing him only the best and a long and fruitful NFL career.

  • hOUligan says:

…. You’ve come a long way, Sterling. It’s been great having you in and around the Sooner program and look forward to watching you in the nfl. A great story and a great Sooner.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Dom and Striker…stay strong…remember Tony Jefferson undrafted, now starting.

    • akryan says:

They may actually be in a better position now. They get to choose who they’ll go to. It shows just how overrated spandex fashion shows are. Striker has tons of tape over guys that are currently in the NFL. He wasn’t the most impressive guy in spandex though. Dom just didn’t have enough post-injury tape to go on. I think he’ll have a harder time than Striker to find a place.

      • RonBurgundy says:

Bad thing about the Striker deal is no $$$$$$$ for familynow ..gotta wait.Stay Strong

        • RBear says:

He’s an easily motivated guy, he’ll make it somewhere

        • akryan says:

It’s not like he’ll be making pennies though. Plus, he’ll have one less year locked into a rookie contract. If he blows it up, then he’ll be able to get a better one, earlier. It’s obviously better to be drafted high than undrafted, but the league minimum is still a pretty nice amount of money.

        • Rick says:

Striker will sign a contract with the Bills for $435,000/yr on a 3 year deal. He also gets $925/week through training camp. The major difference between an undrafted free agent and a drafted player is the sign on bonus. WHEN Striker makes the team he’ll get a very modest sign on bonus. One of the sixth round draft picks for the Bills will receive aprox. $170,000 signing bonus. The other difference is a 3 yr contract vs. a 4 yr contract. Strikers deal could be much better than a regular rookie contract in that his contract will be over a year before, then he really gets paid.

          • Dick Bump says:

That’s not a bad deal. He’ll likely have to work harder to see the field than someone who was drafted higher, but hard work and a high motor seem to be some of his strong suits. I think the Bills will be a good fit for him.

          • Rick says:

The knock on Striker is 1. Gets blocked out of the play 2. Small for a LB 3.Doesn’t tackle well (Not my opinion, reading the “experts” opinions). I don’t think the scouts give him credit for his tenacity for the QB, they also say he is weak. Have them ask Alabama’s all world LT how weak he is. Striker is a player that cannot be measured by a tape, or a clock, or a scale. They measure his raw numbers and write him off. He will probably make his career on being “written off”.

    • Dick Bump says:

Looks like Dom should have stayed another year. He could have improved his position with another year. Time will tell, I guess. I wish him the best. I think Striker will make it, although he won’t be rich for awhile.
