Samaje Perine Suffers Minor Knee Injury During Practice

During his fall camp meeting with the media Saturday afternoon, Bob Stoops announced that running back Samaje Perine had suffered a minor knee injury during practice earlier that day.

Stoops said it was a slight strain to one of the outside ligaments, but made it very clear the injury was “not significant” and that Perine should only need a couple days of rest to recover.

Oklahoma certainly has no shortage of talent at the running back position, so it wouldn’t surprise if they give their other backs a few more practice snaps just to help lessen the risk of any further potential injury to Perine.

The only good I see in this is more touches for the rbs

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

the worry is that Samaje has had a significant knee injury before.. Hope it doesn’t linger..

    • William Ryan says:

He tore both mcl and acl junior year of high school

      • EasTex says:

As I recall, it was his sophomore year.

        • William Ryan says:

Your right on that he had a monster year his junior year rushed for over 2000 yard very AD like coming off a injury.

          • EasTex says:

I’ve watched his high school videos since he was a sophomore. I read an article on him his junior year and Perine stated he was working on building up the strength in his legs and learning how to run lower. I would say he accomplished both goals.

          • William Ryan says:

Yes sir love the kids entuasim and drive who comes off a acl and mcl tear and is better the next season goes to show this kid is the real deal I know it’s not to far fetch but I really could see him winning the Heisman the way he carry him self on and off the field

          • EasTex says:

I could see him winning the Heisman based on his on field performance, it seems the Heisman isn’t interested in what type of person it is any longer.

          • William Ryan says:

I’ve watched his highlights yesterday it’s been a while since I seen a kid with a low center of gravity like his and got hit that many times and stayed on his feet…and to think he was a true freshman.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

He reminds me of Earl Campbell.

          • William Ryan says:

Agree both similar and statue and running style

    • Rick says:

All of the news releases says minor injury, a bruise or sprain.

  • Brad Warren says:

The only information from practice is usually injury related. No bueno.

    • We have practice info that will be up on Monday. We have yet to post any injury info, until today. That said, it’s only 3 days into fall practice so…..

      • JD says:

Your gonna make us wait until Monday for free info!!! You guys suck

      • Brad Warren says:

I was being facetious about news out of camp seemingly always being injury related. Not a shot at all. Misinterpreted.

  • MrBigsby says:

Anything to Mixon missing Meet the Sooners Day?

    • Brad Warren says:

I know part of his initial punishment was not being able to participate in spring game. Hadn’t heard of him not being allowed to be a part of today’s event. However, if I had to wager, I’d bet it was another stipulation.

    • Tim A says:

Boy I sure hope not – as I have been hearing how great he has been looking. If anyone knows anything here please share.

    • Clint Lenard says:

I’m guessing they’re keeping him away from the public this off-season. Smart move.

    • Nothing. They typically try to keep freshmen away. Deberry was one of the few that I saw there today. Just one of Stoops rules regarding freshmen.

      • JD says:

Is Mixon considered a freshman or redshirt freshman…not sure if he paid his way last year and would be considered a greyshirt and get the extra year…be nice but if the hype is real we would get the 6 years out of him anyways…when I think about it he was on scholly last summer so he’s prob considered a redshirt

      • Brad Warren says:

This is normally the case. Keeping freshmen away. But Anderson was there. Joe probably would’ve loved to be there today. I just think he should’ve.

    • Stephen says:

Probably because of people like Jason Kersey who can’t write about anything else as the state’s largest sports media team

  • JB says:

Sorry, it’s the former PT in me…it would be a knee sprain, not strain. A strain is an injury to contractile tissue (a musculotendinous injury). A ligament injury is a sprain.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Good insight. Is it possible Mayfield’s reported shoulder “fatigue” was actually a slight sprain or strain?

  • SoonerinLondon says:

So, you think the guy who hit Perrine today, hurting his knee, is catching any heat?

    “Not great, Bob.”

    • William Ryan says:

Hopefully it’s not the same thing that happened to the Cummings kid at Kansas I think there still trying to figure out the kids name…

  • brainpimp says:

Good grief the other sites are playing up the teaser posts with over top fearmongering only say its a big fat nothing burger in the post.

Dear TFB thank you for not being stupid click whores.

  • JD says:

    Is Anderson full go

    • William Ryan says:

They said it was a mcl strain and that was back in the spring plus I think I seen pics of practicing

      • JD says:

Thats good to hear…seem like a report of him finally walking without a brace a just a few weeks back..fig they’d ease him back if that was the case

        • William Ryan says:

with the depth in front of him no since in rushing him back I really like him coming out of high school kid has all the tools to be great player

          • JD says:

Yeah he does…he should be a good one for us…prob not this year though unless there are injuries

          • William Ryan says:

The thing I like most about his film is he’s a big kid thats hard to tackle with blazing speed did not see him get caught from behind once even by defenders that has the angle on him he can definitely take it to the house on any given possession I see a little of Alex Ross but a better all around skill set

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_wETyeIIcBH:disqus

I glanced through your post and thought you said “Axel Rose” instead of “Alex Ross”.

            Yeah…….I’m a little hungover this morning 😀

  • JJSoona says:

Here’s to hoping Landry Jones impresses.

    • William Ryan says:

He’s #2 on the depth chart with a aging and injure prone big Ben he should have ample opportunity to show where he’s at in terms of a qb in the nfl

      • James Gustina says:

The unfortunate part is that he’ll be rolling into a division that is dominated by some pretty scary defenses (the Bengals especially). There’s a reason why Roethlisberger got injured so frequently.

    #SOONERS #OU

    BOOM!!!!

  • Ruddoj says:

minor injury is much better than a major knee injury….obviously.
big RB’s place huge workloads on the knees…hope this is NOT a trend for SP.

    • Slim Sooner says:

Me, too. Much prefer him 100% healthy all the time. Man, I hate injuries, even minor ones.

  • RBear says:

Chuck Norris is in worse shape if this is true, has to be.

  • ND52 says:

No need to see him for the rest of fall camp. Give the reps to Mixon and the other unproven backs on the team,

    • JrsySooner says:

Normally but they’ve installed the new offense he’s going to need reps

      • ND52 says:

If he were a receiver or a lineman I’d be in agreement with you @disqus_9HdKvWLPxI:disqus but Perine’s only responsibilities are going to be to carry the football and (possibly) protect the passer.

Running backs just don’t need to understand a system inside and out to be successful in it. Heck, AD didn’t get any reps until fall camp of 04′ and it didn’t seem to hurt him a bit.

        • JrsySooner says:

Agree to disagree my stupid way of saying I agree with you but…Riley likes all his playmakers on the field at the same time I actually think Sam is going to be an H back like back in the day getting out on the edges catching passes…what was that guys name back in 2000 or 2003 rats . ..

          • ND52 says:

Perine changing positions? I can’t think of a bigger waste of talent in the history of the program. You simply do not take the second coming of Earl Campbell and turn him into a receiving back.

The ideal use of Mixon and Perine is something similar to what Norm Chow did with Reggie Bush and LenDale White at USC.

          • JrsySooner says:

I am NOT saying exclusively…. good grief just more options… a lot of people like you seem to forget that it was the offensive line that should have been credited with a lot of his success. Nobody knows what Mixon will be he hasn’t even touched the ball yet…just like getting excited about dede who is going against the 107th defense in the country last year…this year’s team will be wait and see

        • Boom says:

Was AD in routes? Multiple routes? Timing routes? Was AD in an uptempo offense? He needs reps.

          • ND52 says:

Lincoln Riley is not foolish (at least I hope not) enough to try and turn a 240 lb RB into the next Marshall Faulk @disqus_UlasmBD6mJ:disqus

            Mixon yes—-Perine no.

          • boomersooner says:

Yeah you don’t go from sitting on the couch to churning out yds. Some people just say anything and don’t fully understand how sports work. I use to have people ask me all the time what time we showed up for a 7:00 game. They were shocked when they didn’t hear 6:00
