During Monday morning’s Big 12 conference call, Bob Stoops was asked about the status of running back Keith Ford and offered the following:
“He won’t play this week. He has a small fracture in a non-weight baring bone…could be a 2-3 week deal.”
So there you have it. Arguably OU’s top running back will not be available for this Saturday’s game in Morgantown against West Virginia. Bare in mind, OU has a bye week following this WVU game so it’s conceivable Ford could return by Oct. 4th when the Sooners will travel to Fort Worth to take on TCU.

Ouch. I have a feeling this WVU game is going to be closer than most OU fans are comfortable with, and I’d rather have our #1 RB available.
Guess, other than that, it comes at a decent time though. Week off next week, and I think we can get by TCU without him. Hopefully he’ll be back for UT, at the latest.
Isn’t depth a funny thing? One minute we have 4 very good, young RB’s that all probably deserve playing time. A few weeks later, we have 2 of those 4 available for a game.
Ouch. Was hearing that rumor. Gonna get a BIG dose of Perine and hope Daniel Brooks is ready to make some noise. ‘Sooner’ Smith might finally see some action in the next few weeks!! Get ready, son.
I think we will really really miss Keith Fords blocking as much as his running… He has had key blocks on a lot of big plays.
If Stoops uses a third back, of the two possibilities of Daniel Brooks or David Smith, which will he use? Who’s up next?
Brooks
Jordan, you see any chance that Brooks passes up Ross and gets more carries this week? I’ve heard speculation about why Ross had limited carries against the Vols.
Cuz he (Ross) runs into his blockers!
I’d be pretty surprised. But anything is possible if he comes out and has a great game.
Brooks actually looked really good in the spring game, I would prefer him over what I have seen from Ross so far. Ross has hit some long runs, but I don’t foresee holes that big opening up with future opponents.
Huge loss! This why you never can have enough RB’s!
The coaches have a week’s prep to change things up. I don’t know enough about WV’s run defense to make an accurate prediction. Still besides Ross, a heavy dose of Perine with a switch to Books now and again might keep them off balance.
Hoping Perine has a Toby Gerhart type game. With Ross coming in and running the READ option with TK9.
Thats Toby Gerhart with Stanford, Heisman candidate, not Toby Gerhart, crappy starter for Jax.
yes! without a doubt Toby Gerhart the Stanford Cardinal.
Agreed- we have the tools (good ones at that) to run a ball-control option offense but TK would have to be putting his neck on the line in doing so. Question is, are we willing to risk that for eating up the clock and limiting WV’s clock on offense?
UNLEASH Perine the BEAST.
Could be a 20-25 carry day for Tonka.
Lets hope our DB’s are healthy!
Big loss, but need Perine and Ross to step up and for Brooks and/or Smith to be ready if needed. Gonna be interesting to see what Perine does with a decent amount of carries. NEXT MAN UP!
…..ross has wanted his opportunity to be the man, here it is……
guess he better learn to shake some tacklers then…
Right? Dude reminds me of DM the way he runs, but the DM after his knee injury, always falling before really getting hit. He needs to use this opportunity to show off his power, if he has any.
Sudden explosiveness into the hole, lights out picking up rushers and making blocks downfield, sure handed catches, powerful spin moves for extra yards, and no ball security issues. Yeah, somebody’s gonna have to step up big-time.
I’ve been looking forward to what Perine can do to a defense when he gets a lot of carries. As a former running back I know that it takes a few runs to get a feel for the blocking and the way Lb’s are attacking. I think he has a huge game. I also think Brooks can make a statement against WV. I hope they use Ross on the edges whether it be swing pass or misdirection, he could also shine split out in the pass game giving Knight a quick option if the deeper receivers are covered.
