Tre Brown: In case you missed it, Inside Bama Recruiting reported that 2017 DB commit Tre Brown is taking an unofficial visit to Alabama in early June. TFB has since also spoken with Brown, who confirmed the visit is indeed happening. We know that may raise some concerns with OU fans, so we asked Brown to provide some specifics as to where things currently stand.

With news of the visit, naturally there has been some speculation that Brown could be wavering with respect to his commitment to the Sooners. However, Brown was quick to shoot down that talk. “I’m not decommitting from OU. I’m not even taking any officials other than my OU official this coming season. I’m going to OU. I’ve just always wanted to see Alabama. Other than always wanting to play for OU, it was Bama I liked,” Brown explained.

Brown is very close to a number of the current OU commits, including LB backer commit Levi Draper, who both train together on a regular basis. And if all that doesn’t assuage concerns, Brown also went on to say, “OU is where I’m gonna play next year. We are out recruiting for Sooner squad 17.”

If Brown walks away with an offer that would be a good one, no question, and despite what was said above could (potentially) cause him to re-evaluate things. But like any number of young players, Brown comes across like a young man who just wants to enjoy this whole process a little.

Brown says he and the OU staff have spoken about the visit and it was made clear to him that unofficial visits are acceptable, while official visits are not. And as Brown told TFB above, there is only one official visit planned…to Norman. – (Brandon)

Reggie Turner: Some of you will recall a few months back TFB reported that OU was expecting a new preferred walk-on wide receiver to report for fall camp. Reggie Turner is a sudden, fast WR the Sooners recruited out of Blinn College. Turner made a couple of JUCO stops along the way and tells TFB he has been in touch with OU staff member Drew Hill since his initial JUCO placement out in California (Laney College).

Turner is also well acquainted with a number of OU players, including Jarvis Baxter and Dede Westbrook, and, like the former, is hoping to eventually earn a scholarship from the Sooners after initially walking on.

I (Super K) had a chance to watch Turner go through some drills today at the Blitz Academy in the Houston area, and he’s every bit as explosive as I expected. He certainly is cut from the same cloth as the likes of a Westbrook/Baxter/Saunders and has the explosion in his hips to create separation in the slot, plus plenty of bounce to propel him up-field.

In talking to Turner, he struck me as a mature young man who seems singularly focused on being able to come in and immediately display his value.

With John Humphrey departing and Michiah Quick looking at playing on the defensive side of the ball, there is certainly an opportunity for Turner to make an immediate impact. Turner also returns both kicks and punts, OU obviously having openings at each, so it will be interesting to see if special teams is where he could get his foot in the door.

Here are a couple clips from Turner’s workout Wednesday afternoon. – (Super K)

    Where is everybody?

  • MikeyBoom says:

Super K or someone in the know, quick question. From what you can report is the Quick switch something he wants to do or something the staff is making him do? Is he happy with playing defense?

    • AgedBill says:

I could be wrong, but I don’t think O U forces anyone to play where they don’t want to. It wouldn’t result in getting total effort from the player. They might suggest a position change, but I do not see them forcing one.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Just a guess but Im thinking that the staff might have suggested it and after seeing the plethora of DBs going in the NFL draft maybe Michiah might see that as the better option. Again just a guess on my part.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I saw the write up that they had over Quick maybe making a position switch about a month back, but I must have missed where it was set in stone. My question to anyone in the know, is he 100% making the said switch?

    • Jordan Esco says:

The staff isn’t going to “make” a guy switch positions. It’s something that had been discussed, even toyed with earlier, and it would seem Quick finally came around to the idea (for now).

  • AgedBill says:

Maybe Turner blew them away with his speed. 🙂

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Interesting to hear that official visits are not acceptable. Something to definitely keep an eye on. Thanks for all the info guys.

    • ccmosaic says:

Agree, it must be a new policy.

    • Maranatha846 says:

That must be a new rule. In the past we have had more kids than you can count take official visits elsewhere. Some made it to Norman, many wound up decommitting and going elsewhere.

    • T. Rob says:

That’s not a new rule. Or rule period. I would say that was more a warning or leverage move. But guys need to understand some of these kids come from lower income families to where they have never had the chance to visit some of these states and cities. So when the kids get a opportunity to visit them free I say live it up. As a fan I get it, you Dont want to see a kid get wine and dine then flipped. But as a family member of a recruit im like this process only happens once in your life, enjoy it. And on a higher note. If a kid recommits and goes somewhere else do you really want that kid playing for your team if his heart isn’t 100% in it. Its like a spouse cheating. It sucks but im glad I found out you’d not worth my time in the end. So why even make a big deal out of a decommit because I guarantee we will have atleast 1 flip from another school.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Yep, I agree that commits/recruits should take advantage of all the trips, they have definitely earned the right. Also, I think if the commits are visiting other schools then the school has the right and obligation to bring in other kids for visits at that same position for a possible replacement. I also agree with your thoughts on decommits, if they don’t want to be at OU then we shouldn’t want them here. I never wish anything bad for the kid, they are making the best decision for their life, not mine. Hopfully we pick up Creed this weekend and he can help out the rest of the SS17 recruit some more elite guys.

I am so glad that Tre is sticking with OU. He has the right to change his mind and I will not be mad at him but man I will be disappointed. I really believe him and Bandy could be unreal shutdown corners on both side of the field.

TFB the info is amazing. Thanks so much.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

And if anyone leaves we go from top 2 class to eventually no 14 again. Sick of not having top 10 classes.

  • MikeyBoom says:

In my opinion the Brown/OU relationship isn’t good and getting worse. How does this kid go from being as great as it was with him sporting his love for OU/SoonerSquad17 all over his twitter to not even a mention of OU/SoonerSquad17 at all anymore. Forgive me for my ignorance but I would say what happened with the coaches offering other DB’s pissed him off and he is just trying to find somewhere else quietly. I work with high school kids and this screams de-commitment all the way. I feel like he is taking this visit to seriously see how he would fit at Alabama. Can’t blame him for wanting to play somewhere like Bama. I respect that program. But the way he seems to be spinning this shows me he is as good as gone. I hope I’m a million percent wrong though haha

    • Rob says:

Come on man, you honestly think he believes he can more easily go to Alabama and get earlier playing time?? He’s going on an unofficial visit. He straight up says he’s going to be playing at OU next year. What more do you want from him??

      • MikeyBoom says:

Its not about the playing time. It’s about him feeling he was done wrong. Believe me I hope he makes the best decision for him and his family. I want him to come to OU. I am just going off what he has shown. Idk if you remember what I said when the rumblings about him possibly decomitting a while back were on TFB. I work with one of his relatives that told me he wouldn’t mind leaving the state for college. That is why I feel he may leave. Now maybe that relative was making that up but I’ll believe him. The Brown’s are a great family from what I know. You don’t just fall in love with someone then all of a sudden start looking around then tell people its all the same as it used to be. Take what I say for what its worth. Like I said. I can a million percent wrong (I certainly hope so) lol

    • DrewChubbs says:

At this point, we just have to remember that he’s a kid and it’s still pretty early in the recruiting cycle leading up to signing day. I understand what you’re saying, and probably even agree a bit with you. But, at the same time, not knowing the guy, I just have to go by what he says for now. I’ll take him at his word until the grumbles turn to rumbles.

      • MikeyBoom says:

Amen. I don’t blame any kid for making whatever choice they think its best for them

    • ccmosaic says:

I think you are reading way too much into his Twiiter account and etc. Kid wants to be a kid. He will end up being a great Sooner.

      • MikeyBoom says:

True I may just be an idiot lol But like I mentioned below, I work with a relative of his. And he told me that Tre is intrigued about the possibility about leaving the state to play his college ball. Hope that relative is wrong though

    • JrsySooner says:

Um you need more than one db on a football team….duh doubt ou shopping around matters

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Not sure. But if he’s not confident enough to compete…But I say take his word for it. What I don’t get is that top players go to Bama and USC knowing that there’s another top player according to the rankings at the same position. Why would this be any different at OU?

      • MikeyBoom says:

Your preaching to the choir bro

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Fair enough. Do you think OU’s at a place where we can say, oh well. bye and still be able to maintain a top 10 class?

  • Emmanuel Joseph Smith says:

      • Bob Edwards says:

That’s probably why he had to go the JUCO route. Never learned to play the recruiting game.

    • Stephen says:

If it’s more 5, it’s less about the schools, more about the publicity

  • SoonerFan92 says:

This is a little off topic, but Arthur McGinnis has slimmed down a lot! Looks like a completely different person.

  • ccmosaic says:

I believe Brown will stick with the Sooners but, who can really blame the kid for checking other schools out. I am sure he loves OU but living in Oklahoma as a HS kid makes you want to go check out the world. IN the end he will be a great Sooner.
This is the kind of thing you deal with when you get a kid as early as we did. Just part of the game boys and girls.

  • Stephen says:

I’d take a visit to Bama, too. Their facilities are amazing.

  • Dustin says:

I have bled crimson & cream my whole life. I committed to OU in the summer before 2nd grade. That being said, if colleges across the country were beating down my door in high school, you can bet your ass I would take every single one of my visits. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Enjoy it to the fullest. Doesn’t bother me a bit.

Outside that, I’m sure you’re a lot of fun after work and probably the type of guy my wife would warn me about getting in trouble at the bar with. Hope you have a wonderful evening!!!!

  • DCinAZ says:

Why does everybody keep saying or suggesting that Baxter has been an “impact player”? I don’t get it.

I don’t get why we have to keep bringing in JUCOs that DeDe knows either. Our WR situation must be beyond terrible for this to consistently be the case.

    • Drew says:

Baxter was pretty solid for us last year. Considering it was his first year in D1, I would expect him to make a jump this year. Same for Westbrook. Worst case scenario, he doesn’t pan out and he remains a walkon. Best case, we have a Saunders 2.0., and I doubt any of us here would complain about it. So why not give the kid a chance? There’s not really any downside.

      • Rick says:

His is a great story. To say he was an impact player in 2015 is probably a stretch, but no real downside. I think you are right. I think he will be an impact this year.

      • DCinAZ says:

Solid at what tho? I’m not trying to throw shade at the kid, but he was invisible in every single game, all season long.

I’m not saying don’t give this kid a chance. I just don’t know why we have to keep going to the JUCO well over and over with WRs for several years running now. That would seem to indicate a problem.

        • Drew says:

I would agree. I would also say that the problem’s name was Norvell, and that the problem has (is) been dealt with.

Well, I guess mostly agree. I certainly wouldn’t say he was invisible. He had 3 receptions for 36 yards against Clemson, which isn’t that shabby.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Who said impact? Maybe I missed that comment somewhere. Yes something was wrong and he now coaches elsewhere. Similar to the o line mess we are cleaning up after. We have 2 new WR coaches and OC in their second full season who are already making good noise. I see no problem with juco and transfers bridging the gap until Simmons, Cale, and LR right the ship, which appears to be happening IMO. Baxter may not be a superstar but I will take a walk on contributor all day. He was pretty much a freebie and can still contribute. He may ride the pine all year with guys stepping up this year for all we know.

    • j l says:

he was tied for 4th in receptions for the WR corp, which isnt shabby for a former walkon who wasnt in the starting rotation most games.

Impact player is a stretch, but hes a good complimentary weapon.

Why not take another walkon? literally no risk involved there. Either he contributes and maybe earns a scholly that would have otherwise been wasted(from someone who transfers/gets kicked off), or he dosent, and we arent out anything.

      • Rick says:

You bring up an excellent point about walkons. Most HS players don’t have to “earn” their scholly’s other than having outstanding HS careers. OU of late seems to be the school (and coaching staff) that encourages success of walkons. Baker and Baxter obviously come to mind but many others including Rip at FB a few years back. I think he’s rather pleased with his ne pro career. The common theme is, we don’t loose either way, no risk. We either get a roster player that contributes daily, to the best of his ability, without giving up a scholly, or we get a player who wills and plays himself into a starting role like Baker, Rip and Baxter (started 5 games last year). Get a diamond to earn a scholly or get a player who really wants to be here.

    • ColoradoSooner says:

I don’t know if anyone mentions this below but the kid can block. He was huge in getting other people in the end zone.

      • T. Rob says:

Lol Sam. Man your taking it back tonight with the tunes. Good music there. I just never understood ppl getting upset at decommit. Obviously he didn’t want to play at the school so why want him there no matter what star level he is. Rather have a 3 star or no star that’s gonna bust his ass to prove he deserves to be there verse a highly rated boardline hearts not in it type of decommit. As long as the decommiment is early its all good. Now when they do it at the last moment then you have a right to be upset. That could have been another kid who really wanted it spot. Plus your scrambling at the last moment to replace the recruit. But with months to go till NSD, in pretty sure by time its over and done with im sure this class will be done good that 1 decommit or 2 wouldn’t stop this training for rolling full ahead full steam. At the end of the day 1 player is not going to make or break the SS17 movement.

        • SamSooner says:

I agree with you, TRob. Chanse Sylvie comes to mind. Sylvie committed and never wavered. He made it clear he was all OU and he made multiple trips to the campus.

Then there’s Wariboko. He toyed with the coaches because he’s not a team player.

          Then, there’s SS17: need I say more?

Heres a 5 min clip sooner scoop did on Tyrese this week. Love how he gets pumped up talking about OU.https://oklahoma.n.rivals.com/news/scoophd-the-final-chapter

        • SamSooner says:

TRob, thanks for sharing. During the spring practice video, I felt like he was holding back on his teammates. That was confirmed when I saw the game film. He’s nasty and has one helluva a mean streak when he’s competing.

Tyrese has that infectious demeanor; he fits in perfectly with the chemistry. I can tell by the time he graduates, there will not be a question about leadership on the OL.

I’m glad he’s going to be a Sooner.

FYI: that was good to hear that he’s still working on Cede.

          • T. Rob says:

He goes to a school with over 4 thousands kids and the students selected him as class leader. He’s very popular, never had a fight, makes good grades and the staff loves him. A yes sort nor sir type of kid. That’s what I told coach B. Nod only are you getting a athletic coachable lineman but your also getting a young leader for your line for years to come which might be even better. You can’t coach leadership and heart.

          • T. Rob says:

I told him that’s what a leader does. He leaves no one behind. Show the man y’all caré for him and want him back on the squad still. You never know who’s watching.

      • Oscar says:

        Love Miles! You’re in Akron???

        • SamSooner says:

Yes, Oscar. I live in Akron. Sorry, I just saw this. Let’s get together sometime.

    • DCinAZ says:

Agreed. Even most of the kids who aren’t low income still have never been on a plane and flown across the country to be waited on hand and foot. I don’t blame them for being excited about it at all. What an exciting thing for a young man to get to experience.

  • JB says:

Non-football related…if you find yourself visiting in the Hampton Woods area, stop in Richmond at Dutch & Co. Actually, make a reservation first. Seating is limited and they’re always full. The food is terrific and the head chef and owner is an Oklahoma boy named Caleb Shriver. He trained with Kurt Fleischfresser (hope I spelled that right) of The Coach House as well as notable chefs in Chicago and Richmond before striking out on his own. Did I mention the food is fantastic? He also has a gourmet hot dog business across the street called Stroop’s that is open during the day.

  • DCinAZ says:

Uh-oh…….Bandy just got an offer from the Canes.

“I was just chilling and it was just another offer for me,” Bandy said. “It’s an offer that I wanted. A lot of schools that came by always asked how does this guy have so many offers and is an Oklahoma commit but somehow doesn’t have a Miami offer.”

Bandy said he plans to visit Miami this summer.

    • T. Rob says:

Bandy seems like the type if kid that dreams big. I Dont see him staying local but wanting to move to a change of scenery. He seems to be firmly committed to ss17

      • DCinAZ says:

Agreed. He’s retweeting the hell out of all things Canes right now but I think he’s trolling them (hopefully). He has said he values loyalty above all else and Oklahoma was “there from day 1”. We’ll see if he’s a man of his word. I think he is.
