Redshirt Freshman Breakout Candidates

Image via sports360az.com

With spring practices just barely over a week away, it seemed like as good a time as any to throw something like this together. As with most years, the Sooners redshirted a number of talented players last year, which isn’t all that unique. What is unique, however, about this coming 2015 season is the amount of turnover with respect to Bob Stoops’ coaching staff and the changes these new coaches will be bringing with them to Norman.

Thus there will presumably be even more of an opportunity for young players to try and step up into a contributor’s role with both a new approach/style to offense as well as a revamped defense. With that in mind, here is a quick list of who I feel will be some of the most likely candidates you could start to hear more about this spring/summer.

TE Mark Andrews – If you’re asking me to push all of my proverbial chips in to the middle of the table on one redshirt freshman “breaking out” next year, Andrews is that guy for me. I think he’s a match-up nightmare just waiting to happen in this Lincoln Riley offense, if used properly. If you line him up on the inside, linebackers won’t be able to stay with him while he should be able to easily wall off most, if not all, cornerbacks/safeties with his 6’6″ 236 pound frame. The natural comparison for many has been former Texas Tech TE Jace Amaro, and I think it’s a solid one. And it could easily just be my OU bias coming through, but I actually think Andrews is a little bit of a better overall athlete than Amaro was.

OT Orlando Brown and/or OT Kenyon Frison – It’s certainly no secret that OU will have a pair of openings at both left and right tackle in 2015 following the loss of future NFL’ers Tyrus Thompson and Daryl Williams. And while there may be a more experienced player or two ahead of Brown and Frison on their respective sides of the line (Brown is projected as a RT, while Frison a LT), the talk of both since they arrived on campus has been overwhelmingly positive. The opportunity is certainly there, but it remains to be seen (1) if they can beat out the player/s in front of them and/or (2) how comfortable Bob Stoops and Bill Bedenbaugh would be in potentially having to redshirt freshmen with virtually zero experience as your starting bookend tackles.

RB Joe Mixon – Duh, right? Not exactly going out on much of a limb here, but clearly Mixon is a name that simply has to be included here. Talent was obviously never the issue with Mixon, and now he should get the chance to display some of that this coming season. By almost all accounts, he’s the ‘best fit’ for what we’re expecting Riley will want to do with this OU offense. Mixon’s ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and/or line up split out could pay huge dividends in 2015, and may prove to be how he can be used most effectively in his offense (at least for the 2015 season).

WR Dallis Todd – In addition to tackle, OU will also have plenty of opportunities for wide receivers in 2015 especially in what many of us are assuming to be somewhat of a pass-happy offense. And following a disappointing year for the position in 2014 and two new coaches assigned to the group, one would have to think outside of Sterling Shepard every spot is pretty much up for grabs. Todd (6’5″) is one of the trio of big receivers the Sooners signed last year and a guy who routinely used his size to go up and over defenders in high school. It remains to be seen whether or not he can replicate that kind of success at the college level, but one has to like his chances given his frame and ability to high-point the football.

CB Tito Windham – Admittedly, this one is a bit of a shot in the dark. I’m also basing this primarily on some what K has shared with me in regards to some of what he has been told about Windham. From what he (K) has heard, the coaches have raved about Windham’s athleticism since the day he arrived. However, they always knew he was going to be pretty raw in terms of technique. But the kid is apparently a tireless worker always looking to learn and very open to coaching. So my thinking here is he has all of the tool from physical standpoint, maybe with a new guy in charge of the secondary there is a bit more willingness to take a chance on a kid like that. I’m not suggesting Windham opens season as the starter opposite Zack Sanchez, I think at this point we have to assume that is Jordan Thomas’ job to lose, but he could definitely be someone who works his way into the DB rotation.

So those are the guys I’m going with, but I want to here from you. Who do you think are some of the players we have yet to see on Owen Field who could have a breakout year for the Sooners in 2015?

  • Sam Philbeck says:

Good stuff, Andrews and Mixon are the ones I’m excited about. To hopefully have some resemblance of a TE again will be amazing and Mixon’s talent I think we’ve all been waiting to see.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Tay Evans/Curtis Bolton are just a couple injuries away from playing and if Frank Shannon doesnt make it back for some reason both may regardless

  • J.r. Kamm says:

Couldn’t agree more with Andrews. Loved his high school tape and just think he’s going to blow up.
Can’t go wrong with Mixon either.

  • BoomerDave says:

Jamaal Brown recently said in a radio interview that Frison is the real deal and will be hard to keep off the field next year.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Not a QB on the list. Sad boomer.

I’d like to think that Cody will be break out player this year. He has all of the physical abilities. The rest that makes for a good QB is unknown.

  • F1at1ined says:

Justice Hansen could be a surprise as the position is pretty open right now.
Frison and Mixon are probably the most likely. I’d also give a shout out to Dwayne Orso (who looks huge) and Carson Meier (the TE that is often overlooked by Andrews) as dark horse surprises.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Of course I expect to see big things from Andrews and Mixon but I really hope Hansen has a breakout type year.

  • BoomerDave says:

Not sure that Windham doesnt make his impact returning punts and/or kicks.

  • Ryan says:

Watch out for Jeff Mead. He should have been redshirted last year. What a waste. He has a lot of talent. If he continues to bulk up he will be tough to handle.

    • Sooner 76 says:

He had a lot of trouble catching the ball, which makes me worry about the ones who redshirted. That is, why didn’t they play, b/c they had trouble catching the ball, trouble blocking, or just needed a year with Schmitty?

  • Troyce Lewis says:

Really rooting for Windham, can’t wait to see what he can do

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Impact Tier 1: Andrews, Todd, and Frison.

    Impact Tier 2: Mixon (I think he’s “2b” in the Samaje-Ford/Mixon 1-2(a)(b) punch).

Impact Tier 3: Brown, Windham, and Evans/Bolton.

With how the season went I would put Ross over Ford. Just like most Fords they tend to lose things while moving.

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Maybe, but I’m not quite there. I still think Ford is a better back and suspect Ross will see his role more and more restricted to kick return duties. I could be wrong and usually am.

        • thebigdroot says:

It’s a good problem to have.

        • soonersd says:

From what I’ve seen of Ross’s lack of shiftiness, Ford’s fumble issues and the tape on Mixon (I know it’s HS)… I think, barring injury, there is zero chance Mixon isn’t #2 after the first few games of the season. From what I’ve read he’s a hard worker and if he can pick up blocks there is no way Ross should be taking too many reps from him. IMO

Love Ross at Kick Returner and a few sweeps a game but that’s about it.

          • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

            Solid. I think that’s a good assessment.

          • Tulsa Terry says:

I disagree about Ross. A special talent with competent coaching he could challenge for the 1 spot at rb with his speed and pass catching ability.

      • J J says:

IMO they didn’t use Ross or Ford to their individual strengths as the season finished up.

  • Cole says:

I’ve said since he was recruited Mixon reminded me of Reggie Bush, the way he can fluently switch to receiver as if that’s his base position. Looks like Reggie Bush and Lendale White in the backfield.

I’m curious to see how Hansen comes out this spring and maybe can establish himself as the number 2 qb.

And Courtney Garnett looks like a kid who can get some reps at NT.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Andrews & Frison for sure.. Im still not totally convinced Mixon makes it to the fall, if he does he’ll have a huge impact on the offense.. Really hope some young Linebackers & Dlinemen show out too..

    • BoomerDave says:

Just curious, why do you think Mixon might not make it to the fall?

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

If some other judge decided to release the tape. That whole mess would start all over again. & Boren can’t stand bad PR…

        • BoomerDave says:

That decision to reinstate has been made. Mixon has been nothing but a model citizen and student. That won’t happen.

        • Brad Warren says:

Boren saw the tape, probably knew there was a chance tape might get released someday. He’s no dummy. Anyways, he outlined the punishment f the Univ, of which Joe has followed to the letter. Bad PR would be punishing him further. Bad argument. You’re fired!

    • Brien Brown says:

Yeah man I agree with the guys below, Mixon is going be just fine.

  • thebigdroot says:

For the life of me I can’t remember who all Red Shirted last year, any way we can a full list?

  • Jordan Esco says:

I feel somewhat compelled to point out (for some of you) this was an entirely 100% positive story authored by yours truly 😉

    It’s like seeing a unicorn…..

  • CJ says:

Jordan/SuperK—What kind of feedback have you gotten about Orso & Paul?

    • Boom says:

I believe I heard they will take some additional time. Hope I’m wrong but that was the latest.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I haven’t really heard anything re: Paul. And could only really share what K has told me about Orso, and I’m just not sure he wants some of it out there (nothing ominous or anything before anyone freaks out, but I just don’t want to put something out there he didn’t want).

But, generally, I think what Boom said below is a pretty fair assessment of things. I wouldn’t expect either to significantly contribute in 2015.

      • lulzer says:

I would be shocked if anything negative is said about Orso. Kid is great and doing extremely well on and off the field.

  • BoomerDave says:

Alvarez is gonna be a stud as well. I heard that he was good enough to have played last season.

  • Neworleanssooner says:

It surprises me that Tito Windham is so “raw” technique wise. The area that Tito comes from (MS gulf coast) is known for producing not only great athletes, but very well-coached athletes. Hearing how athletically gifted and fast he is during his recruiting, had me anxiously awaiting his emergence as a Sooner. Nice to hear about his work ethic. Combine that work ethic with his talent and speed and he will be superb!

  • thebigdroot says:

    Spock died this morning.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Question: Will Joe Palange block as fiercely as his roster mug suggests?

  • Fear The Magic says:

    My top 5 in order
    1. Mixon
    2.Frison
3.Andrews ( but watch out for Carson Meir too )
    4.Brown
    5.Green
6.Alvarez if hes still considered a redshirt fr.

    Did I say 5? I meant 6.

  • lulzer says:

Orso…kid will be dominant and he was practicing ahead of everyone last year except the “1”s. Book it.

  • solja4christ says:

Cody Thomas has always been the most accurate thrower of anyone on campus. I expect to see Mayfield and Thomas head that group. I’m hopeful that Riley can get the best from each guy but Thomas and Hansen have the most intangibles. …..

    • ND52 says:

Most accurate thrower? That is not good to hear.

      • Brien Brown says:

Let’s not knock Thomas Sir, he did play with a bad WR core well a solid yet undefined WR’s core they did drop lots of passes. He got thrown in the mix when things where bad. Go back watch his film kid can throw and will be just fine in Riley’s offense.

        • ND52 says:

I hope you’re right. My belief all along has been that Heupel was an incompetent OC and not that we had subpar QBs.

          • Brien Brown says:

He was a great Qb’s coach though somewhere along the lines he lost focus though.

          • Jonathan Taylor says:

He was a good QB position coach, but it just seemed to me that he got bogged down with game planning as an OC, as did Norvell, and both started to slip in developing their talent. Look at Landry Jones for example: Developed good under Heupal in his first year, but never improved after Heupal became coordinator. Constantly made the same mistakes and never took steps forward which can be viewed as bad position coaching or in Heupal’s case neglectful position coaching. The fact that he’s as good as he was shows the talent he had that we kinda squandered IMO.

          • Brien Brown says:

The tell/tell signs where there long before this season that there was issues abroad for JH and Stoops did nothing other than try to make Norvall co-coordinator but all that did was allow not just QB’s but the WR’s to struggle in a big way IMO. Josh never seemed comfortable calling the plays but that again is IMO. But all is speculation, mean how critical will we all be if Riley’s O doesn’t put up huge numbers in the first 2-3 games? Mean I think and believe OU has a lot of talent and I mean a lot of it and it’s good talent no reason they shouldn’t win! But it will be fun to see what all goes down this year.

  • ouwooferman says:

    andrews
    mayfield

    • J J says:

      Not a redshirt freshman… Mayfield

      • ouwooferman says:

Thanks captain obvious. Since most other posters ingnored the RF stipulation thanks for picking my post to share. OBTW, Andrews would meet your criteria as well. Thanks for playing. next.

        • J J says:

Good morning to you too. Not picking on your post, but Mayfield is a junior… That’s a big difference from Andrews & a RF. I don’t recall the exact NCAA/big 12 rulings regarding his eligibility. But it is indeed his THIRD year with a college football team. You might want to calm down a bit…

          • ouwooferman says:

Keep spinning it CO if it makes you feel better about yourself and singling out this post vs others.

          • J J says:

No spin dude… Let me make it simple:
            1) title impact RS freshman
            2) you said Andrews & Mayfield
            3) you are the only one to say Mayfield at time of my comment
            4) mayfield is neither a freshman nor a redshirt freshman. He is actually a junior, he had a FR year at TT, a soph ineligible year at OU. This is his 3rd year.

Apparently, you have a problem with someone pointing that out.

          • ouwooferman says:

So, since you are going to focus on the article. Try rereading the last line….” Who do you think are some of the players we have yet to see on Owen Field who could have a breakout year for the Sooners in 2015?” But i am sure you will find issue with this post as well. Carry on CO>

          • J J says:

Funny. Every single other comment is actually about a FR or a RS FR. Are there any JuCo’s listed? No. Dude, you need to chill. It’s ok to want to see Mayfield play, but Jordan was discussing freshman. Move on,

          • ouwooferman says:

Cant admit you are wrong. The last statement did not qualify who we want to see. for you SIF.

          • J J says:

What are you 8? You are the one who won’t admit you are wrong! Again reading comprehension. You are the only comment at the time I replued to you who did NOT actually select a FR or a RS FR when you put Mayfield. Good bye.

          • ouwooferman says:

            Hasta SIF

          • J J says:

Whatever. How many names are you gonna call me??? Maturity at its finest

          • ouwooferman says:

No name calling here. Hasta SIF

        • Guest says:

          Exposed SIF.

  • Sooner_Ace says:

    Andrews/Mixon

  • Soonerboyz says:

Has Reynolds done a interview with OU’s media that us fans can see?

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

    Offense:
    1. Hansen
    2. Andrews
    3. Brown/Frison
    Defense:
    1. Bolton
    2. Garnett
    3. Windham

  • J J says:

I can’t go with Gabe Lynn huh?

  • JJSoona says:

I can’t disagree with any of this. I’m a KJ Young fan, so I hope he can break into this discussion.

    • Brien Brown says:

Didn’t Young play last year though if so, he will be a Sophomore and not in the discussion as a “breakout redshirt Freshman”.

      • JJSoona says:

Yes indeed he did play. I just have him on my short list of players that could break out this year. Should have clarified that.

  • Scott Moore says:

Thank you guys for doing this. Nice to see so much hope for the future. Can’t help but get excited for this coming Spring game and season.

  • Brien Brown says:

I think Andrews is a lot like Trent Smith in my eyes, was never really a “TE” but wasn’t really a “WR” either just a great playmaker. Seems to me he is a mix between Gresham and Smith, I like the kid and I think he is a potential X Factor next year! Mixon is obviously a duh lol, Todd looks good on film and hope that does translate well to College ball, I hope they use Flowers more this year though he is a Sophomore. I hope thee is more depth to the Defense with this group I know this new class is full of talent, but, so was last years class.

  • hemisooner says:

    1. Mixon
    2. Todd
    3. Frison only bc he will split time otherwise he would be 2
    4. Brown same as frison
    5. M Green- heard he was more impressive than tito
    6. Carson/ andrews
    7. Orso

  • Brien Brown says:

My Bold predictions for this year. Cody Thomas starts at QB not Mayfield, Knight plays some in a special package and does well in that roll. Mixon and Perine both finish as All-Big 12 1st team RB’s. Andrews, Quick, Westbrook, and Shepard all finish with 40 plus catches as does Mixon. The O-Line is deep and stronger than this past year. The D-Line will be like the O-Line deeper and better, the LB’s will be a strength of the team, and the secondary plays better than the Legion of Boom Defense, and Austin Seibert is a Freshman All-American at kicker and all Big 12 kicker. Oh and we win the Championship!!! Ok I am done dreaming but would be cool right?

  • JBSooner says:

I hope that ALL secondary positions are open in the spring. I don’t think anyone should be automatically penciled in as the starter at ANY secondary position.

    • John Garner says:

Agree. Any player wanting to play DB should first be able to tackle. And anyone wanting to play CB should be able to play press coverage.

      • Brien Brown says:

The Safeties can’t play out of position either also. they got caught napping and cheating up a lot last year!
