Open Post | Monday, Dec. 7th (UPDATE 6:19 pm)

Lincoln Riley: I have not heard much on Riley and East Carolina at this point, but have been told that Riley, to the surprise of no one, is on the ECU admin’s “wish list.” It remains to be seen whether it becomes anything more than wishful thinking, however. – (Super K)

Velus Jones: Star 2016 WR, Velus Jones (Saraland, AL) took an official visit this past weekend to Tennessee. I caught up with Jones shortly after, who said the visit was good but I got the impression it didn’t compare to his previous OU visit. It sounds like the Sooners are still in a good spot with Jones. – (Super K)

– Levi Draper: As you know by now, 2017 Collinsville linebacker has officially committed to OU. Draper said it’s where his heart has been for a while now, and that he prayed on it for a couple of days before making the decision to decommit from Oklahoma State and commit to Oklahoma.

As to any potential future visits to other schools Draper said, “No. The only visits I am taking is to OU. I am done. That is where I see myself the next five years.”

Sooners defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks and defensive coordinator Mike Stoops did a great job recruiting Draper. The pair made certain Draper knew just how important he was to OU, and the OU assistant coaching duo developed a close relationship with the star linebacker.

Draper’s commitment adds to the recruiting momentum the Sooners are riding right now, and TFB fully expects that to continue with how aggressive this staff is on the recruiting trail. – (Brandon)

    Hello OP

  • j l says:

Vols fans seem to be convinced jones is theirs. Hope they are wrong.

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Vols fans are delusional. For evidence, see 2015.

      • j l says:

but, 8-4 is back, right? lol

All kidding aside, they did make some strides this year. Pretty decent squad.

        • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

This is true. But we beat them back-to-back. Therefore, they must endure my gloating. Edit: Make that OUr gloating.

    • CrimsonNative says:

He has tweeted a lot of Vols stuff since the visit.

      • Tipman says:

Maybe he’s giving them a false sense of hope. Similar to what we did for the first 3 quarters in their stadium.

    • Tipman says:

TENN also got a crystal ball prediction from Demetric Warren

    • Fear The Magic says:

Because of the position he plays at this point he’s pretty much the most important recruit on our board right now. We REALLY need a playmaker at WR once Shep leaves

      • Doobie74OU says:

I think we will be fine at WR the next few years. I will always take adding talent and creating competition but several guys did better than expected this year. Westbrook & Neal were solid and made great plays at times. Baxter was a pleasant surprise. Guys like Andrews, Quick, Mead, Green get another spring under their belt not to mention the extended practice for the bowl game. We always need to add talent but we have a lot here as well.

        • Fear The Magic says:

If you check out the stats over the last two games only ONE WR not named Shepard had over one reception and that WR only had two receptions. In short, other than Shep we seem to be lacking a go to guy and we’ll need one badly come next year.
With all that said, hopefully someone in house will step it up next year but thats questionable at this point.

          • Soonerfan24 says:

Westbrook has drawn PIs and there have been a bunch of near misses with him on deep balls though

          • Fear The Magic says:

As of now Westbrook looks like our #1 WR next year but IMO hes good but so far not great at getting open. I understand that kids like Shepard dont grow on trees but if you look at teams like Baylor TCU and even OSU they all have kids that look to be more dangerous that Westbrook.

          • Brad Holland says:

I heard Westbrook may be a one and done guy. Has anyone else heard the same?

          • Brent says:

has a kid to take care of. I think if he has a breakout performance in the playoff games he will bolt. Otherwise he becomes the focal point next year.

          • MoJoOkie says:

Nothing against the kid, but I don’t think he’s had a payday season. One more year at OU could mean a lot of $ at the next level.

          • MoJoOkie says:

I think your first throw is to your best receiver if he is open. It doesn’t necessarily mean options 2 and 3 weren’t viable, just that your star is the first option. More snaps in the system and a little guidance will make them better. And no doubt that Shep is special.

          • Fear The Magic says:

            I hope that you’re right.

          • MoJoOkie says:

LOL, me too. May as well be an optimist, doesn’t cost any more, and it’s more fun.

          • Fear The Magic says:

The funny thing is that Im as optimistic as they come. I feel really good about literally every other position other than WR right now. Not that Im all doom and gloom on the WRs but I just know that for Rileys system to really click we we’ll need at least 1-2 dynamic WRs and so far Im just not seeing it.

          • Soonerfan24 says:

Don’t get me wrong, I totally agree that we’re absolutely going to miss Shep. He might be the best OU receiver of all time, but Westbrook, Andrews, Quick, Green, Mead, Miller all have incredibly high ceilings and Jay Norvell isn’t the WR coach anymore.

          • MoJoOkie says:

You may be right. But route responsibilities and experience should help. Westbrook always appears to run long routes straight up the sideline as opposed to say crossing routes that tend to get quick separation, etc. I figure Riley will customize to optimize.

          • brainpimp says:

Because shepard got open all the damn time.

    • Zack says:

This is true hopefully he sees that ou is a better fit.

      • j l says:

I hope so too. Who wouldnt want to play WR in this scheme? Tenn is mostly a run team at this point, dobbs hasnt became the downfield threat most expected.

  • Mr. Jones says:

Anyone know if Mique Juarez is visiting OU today?

  • Defend Colfax says:

Glad Draper is fully committed, the ’17 class is off to a great start. Let’s hope ’16 picks up, I’m not a huge fan of “silent commits”

  • Swanny says:

Another LB commit that wasn’t recruited by Kish. I’m not bashing him, he’s a great coach, but obviously this coaching staff has addressed his recruiting deficiencies.

    • BoomerDave says:

Uh….yeah you’re bashing him. I’m not sure it’s a case that Kish didn’t recruit him, but it appears that Mike took the lead on Draper.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Yet he doesn’t get credit when he helps recruit players at other positions.

Kish recruits just fine. He may not be a stud, top-end recruiter, but he is more than adequate.

    • EasTex says:

I think the coaches also have territories, not just positions.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I hear Kish is on the NO-FLY list. Obviously.

    • Scott says:

Kish got & recruited JMT , Youngquist , Jefferson. Also is recruiting 5 star C Kelly , M Juarez

      • Swanny says:

Wrong. Youngquist’s lead recruiter was Simmons. Kish came in at the end once he was locked in. If they’re a 3 star kid, you’re right, Kish is the guy. But he wasn’t the guy for Kelly, that’s Mike Stoops. Juarez is the only 5* kid that he’s recruited that we even have a chance at… Last year we landed DeBerry and McGuinness and Monty was the lead recruiter for both. I’m not bashing him as a coach. In fact, it is really smart of of Stoops to say, we value you as a coach, but we’re going to put our best foot forward with recruits.

    • hOUligan says:

Nothing ‘recruits’ kids like success. OU LBs, Dline and DBs are all playing at a high level and in the CFP. BOOMs to follow.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Kish is a better coach than recruiter. And a darn good coach at that.
People like Monty are better recruiters than coaches.
A good staff has a mixture of both.

If you want a staff full of those that excel at both, get ready for a high turnover rate cause those kind of guys are called head coaches.

Geez, some of you people just can’t stop can you?

      • Swanny says:

I’d take a staff full of head coaches. Gimme that. Guys who can recruit and coach, then replace them with guys who can recruit and coach. Sounds like Alabama’s coaching staff. C’mon man. I’m not bashing him, if anything it was an applause for Stoops’ knowing his guys’ strengths and weaknesses. He’s putting Kish in a position to do what he does best, coach.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

      Hallmark Channel updates as filler?

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

LOL! Hallmark seems to boil the estrogen to uncomfortable levels for our TFB brethren. Maybe JY breakdowns of our favorite Christmas classics?

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yeah, I would go for that. The Twelve Days of JY Trench Warefare Breakdowns. What could possibly exhibit more traditional seasons warmth than that?

Isn’t there a dead period or something that starts around the middle of December. Not sure what all goes on but I didn’t like it last year.

    • Scott says:

They should add a update one day about the word “Clemsoning “.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

The Day of Clemsoning is coming. Let it be written.

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

        Clemson |clem-sun|

        verb [ trans. ] – put out of memory (a college football program) after a full year of daft or otherwise meaningless hype;

        • (usu. be Clemsoned) beat (a mediocre or average team) by an other-worldly amount of points after suffering to them a previous defeat: my team was Clemsoned after a big win

  • mizzOUstu702 says:

Ruffin McNeil as linebackers coach? Wouldn’t look that great firing Kish, especially after a solid year from the group. But McNeil has solid ties to the Big 12 and Stoops coaching tree. Seems like he’d be a good recruiter and obviously a good coach.

Also could be that McNeil may want a coordinator/head coach gig again too.

    • BoomerDave says:

So….you want to fire Kish. Hire McNeil as LB coach, admitting that he would probably be looking for a coordinator or HC job. No thanks!

      • Zack says:

Especially not after the past year for kish. He’s done a really good job overall but right now he’s got the best position group on the team and he’s starting to add solid recruits.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Under Venables we had some great LB’s but it seemed like, if the first guy went down no one was ready to take his place. Since Kish I’ve hardly noticed when a second stringer stepped in. We are so deep right now that a guy with as much talent as Devonte Bond is having a hard time getting on the field. We have had several good recruiting classes and are stocked up for several years.

So yeah, let’s fire the guy that built that and hire a guy who may not last a year before he takes a DC position somewhere. /s

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Honestly, what does Kish have to do for you?

      • Kevin Burger says:

Kish doesn’t have to do anything for me, but if he were to crank out a few Butkus award winners for the Sooners, I won’t stop him.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

That is kind of an unrealistic expectation. Bosworth, Calmus who else? Awards are nice but you can win championships and get drafted high and that is enough. Kish is doing a fine job.

          • Kevin Burger says:

Sure, but with what the Sooners have done this season, any sort of raising the bar is automatically in the unrealistic expectations category.

Take an 8-5 team that got blown out in their bowl, and take them to the playoff the next year? Incredibly unrealistic expectation. 🙂

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think you are assuming great players are based on coaching. I subscribe to the King’s view: coaches win because of great players. Jimmy Johnson didn’t do anything at Okie St, but once at Miami…

          • MoJoOkie says:

I think you’re right to a certain extent, but Lincoln versus Josh comes to mind and I think it must be a little of both.

          • Ed Cotter says:

And Bob won with many of John Blakes players, who didn’t. I agree, a little of both.

          • Kevin Burger says:

I subscribe to the philosophy that great coaches help find players ways to play at a level beyond what they thought they could. At the college level, player development is a very important piece of the puzzle, as exemplified by Texas.

  • OUWade says:

    • Golfluvr13 says:

I read that yesterday. That is beyond impressive.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson weren’t gym rats. They built their bodies using resistance, calisthenics, etc.

        • EasTex says:

I saw Herschel on a tv show and he said he did 1500 situps a day. The other athletes on the show were speechless.

          • Clint Lenard says:

He’s mentioned various numbers like this, but that’s not that impressive in regards of strength and athleticism. Also, doing this “every day,” as he’s stated, isn’t going to continue to improve muscle mass either. However, I give him ‘props’ for doing what he believed would help him.

          • paganpink says:

Wouldn’t it be similar to high repetition/ low weight workouts and be intended to build strength and stamina rather then muscle mass?

          • Clint Lenard says:

Question: how many pro strength programs do you see using situps for any players? There’s a reason why few to none do. What’s the purpose? Function? It’s a waste of time for the majority who do them.

Doing that many situps causes more issues than they’re worth, creating muscle imbalances and spinal injuries, and “strengthening” musculature that gets strengthened in daily activities.

You can do more for the abdominal musculature by doing deadlifts than you can with situps.

          • BleedCrimson says:

Part of the reason that Optimus is doing the situps is due to the fact that he does not have weights available. But, I also believe that sit-ups are great for working core, if done correctly.

          • brainpimp says:

Once he got to where he could do “that” there isn’t anything needed to improve.

          • Clint Lenard says:

I’m not even sure what you’re trying to say.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

I thought it was 1500 pushups he was doing and the sit ups were in the 3-4000 range. Doesn’t matter, incredibly impressive either way.

          • Ed Cotter says:

And he had his girl friend sit on his back while he did the push ups. I saw that on TV back in the day.

          • soonerbred4ever says:

I’ll bet they would be speechless if they saw Samaje do 225lb bench presses.

          • Brent says:

        • Golfluvr13 says:

Herschel did 1000 pushups and sit ups a day, or so I read. I can do 10. LOL

So I’m in the gym this morning and ESPN is on. There is a fair conversation going on about the playoff and Stephen A. It was disgusting and reminded me why the channel gets changed at my house anytime that idiot is put in front of a camera.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Go back to 2013 and SA said, OU exposed Nick Saban….

      • Recondo says:

Well this morning Nick Saban is the second coming of Christ and anyone who challenges his superiority are being disrespectful of Bama’s greatness. I think he is having a hard time coming to grips with the changing landscape in CFB. Someone should tell him it happens about every 5-10 years and everything will be ok.

  • hushnpa says:

    Dear TFB ,
in thinking about Clemson I just have one real question; do they have anyone who can cover Sterling Shepherd ? If the answer is a clear No then I will feel a lot more confident .
If the answer is that they just might .. then I have to wait till I get a full TFB scouting report to decide how much pepto to stock up on. . I don’t really think anyone can completely shut him down but when we face a really good secondary he really is critical to our success.
I do expect the coaches to come up with a great game plan with plenty of good plays to other guys but when things go bad SS has always been the our trump card ..
I know you will have a scouting report out at some point soon enough , I would just like it to include something about their corners in that respect 🙂

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

They don’t have any Deions if that’s what you mean. The question is time for Mayfield and running the ball.

      • hushnpa says:

don’t know if anyone reads these this late but , I quit worrying about Baker having enough time weeks ago.
        I’m just thinking that if they don’t have someone they Know can cover SS then their whole defense is going to be going from pillar to post trying to figure out which deadly threat to worry about at any given time ;
Mayfield , SS , Perine, Mixon – as recruits are always saying – “in no particulr order” – and not to mention all the other lesser deadly threats to their playoff aspirations like , Flowers , Andrews , Westbrook , Neal et al –
        Mwahaahahhaah

    • Austin says:

Mackenzie Alexander is their best chance at slowing sterling down.

    • Brien Brown says:

IMO their best player is Shaq Lawson on the D side that is. Idk that he is as good as Billings, Oakman, or Ogbah all of whom we faced, I would imagine they will watch the TCU game cause after Texas they where really the only team to mix things up and give us some fits, now I understand we played with TK in that game for the 2nd half and also understand we was in control until Baker got hurt and didn’t come back in, but they did throw us off with their blitzes and designed schemes even with Baker in the game. I think Brent has struggled in past against spread teams, now those that bring up last year. We did play with TK, no Mixon, hardly a healthy Shepard, and JH calling the game. I think they will scheme well against us and do some of what TCU did and I am not sure they are as skilled as the TCU players where though across the board again IMO. They have some players, but think like us with them they haven’t faced a real good QB until now, their 2 best wins before the NC game was against ND and FSU who by chance was playing with their backup QB’s. So take that for what it’s worth, but to directly answer your question, no I don’t think they have anyone capable of shutting down Shep, nor Westbrook, Mixon, Flowers, Perine, Andrews, or Neal this will be the best team speed they have seen all year.

    • Finney56 says:

They actually have a really good cover corner in Mackenzie Alexander, but I still think that Shepard will get open

  • Ed Cotter says:

Baker won the Burlsworth Trophy! Boomer!

    • Stephen Dale says:

he surely didn’t have much competition this year considering the 11-1 season ?

      • Ed Cotter says:

IDK. One guy has thrown over 4000 yards, the most in the nation and the other guy leads the nation in sacks. Pretty good competition from a statistic point of view.

        • Nate Broadus says:

There was definitely enough competition, statistically, that I wasn’t considering it a slam dunk for Mayfield. That said, Baker has his team in the Playoff — and is its driving force. That is unheard of that a walk-on is his team’s heart & soul and also among the best players, regardless of position, in college football.

          It’s a hell of a story.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

Yep. If we win the NC, the screenplay will commence January 15th. They’ll hold it for a re-write in case he wins the 2016 Heisman and even back-to-back NCs.

          • Nate Broadus says:

The cynic in me wants to say that this story is too good to end up with a championship.

The Sooner fan and dreamer in me says, “Make a fool out of me, Baker, Sterling, Wolves, OL, Samaje, Mixon, DL, Striker, etc.”

      • j l says:

Nassib from penn state? 15.5 sacks.

        Thats pretty good competition.

    • paganpink says:

They can start filming that movie in January I hope!

    • Slim Sooner says:

Sooner! Well-deserved. Good for Baker and thank you to Kliffy AGAIN!!

    • Sooner Ray says:

From this day forward it should be called “The Baker Trophy”.

      • Ed Cotter says:

Serious question? Can a guy win it two years in a row, or just once? Anyone know? Pretty cool award. The first of many for the Sooners I would imagine, culminating in NC #8. 🙂

  • bommer85 says:

It looks like California 5 stars Jack Jones and Mique Juarez will be visiting OU this weekend…not sure of our chances but it is awesome to get that kind of talent on campus. Maybe Jordan or Brandon have more insight??

    • Soonerfan24 says:

From my understanding, Jack Jones is essentially a USC lock, and Mique is a LONG shot

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Granted. However, OU is a top four program this year and these kids are “what have you done lately” type of kids (like my son).

      • Brent says:

Good news is that they both will have zero to no interaction with their new coordinators after the USC firings today.

      • Brien Brown says:

Juarez is a UCLA lean by my understanding and Jones is committed but with new hires at USC he may not be now.

  • Michael Brock says:

Just curious on TFB’s and fellow reader’s opinion as to who the next commit will be. I agree the recruiting momentum is strongly in OUs favor right now. Thanks in advance.

  • Nate Broadus says:

I wouldn’t just be surprised if Lincoln Riley showed any interest in the ECU job, I would be flabbergasted — absolutely stunned beyond belief.

They basically just punted one of his mentors and close friends out of Greenville with a kick to the balls. I would be surprised if Riley would even pick up the phone if their AD called.

    • Recondo says:

It’s still a business so I doubt who they fired factors. He won’t be interested because he knows he’ll land a good P5 job in a couple of seasons.

One more piece of evidence it hurts not playing on the last weekend

    • EasTex says:

I think it also matters if you are on the trophy radar at the beginning of the season. He will certainly be a known contender when next year rolls around.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

That, the half game against TCU, and a great game against OSU that didn’t really produce big QB stats given our running game and large lead.

  • Chezrus says:

    Baker snubbed????

  • Cush Creekmont says:

East Coast & E S PEE In bias. They fell all over themselves about the Stanford RB and about the Clemson QB. Henry was naturally the “winner” but those other two “deserved” an invite.

    JUST WIN THE NATTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • RBear says:

Stanford RB is a stud, hope he wins.

      • EasTex says:

        He would be my choice.

        • Boom says:

ditto. I just wanted Baker to represent. I’m reading he didn’t play last weekend which hurt. So what they are saying is, they are basing all Heisman winners on one game.

          • EasTex says:

I feel badly for him not being given the recognition.
Being selfish, I’m glad that won’t be a distraction for him, the team or the coaches.
Worrying about hat sizes at this time is not needed.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I’m hoping he uses this as motivation in the playoffs. 🙂

          • EasTex says:

That’s what we need to see a fired up Baker Mayfield. 🙂

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

I know right. He’s so lifeless on the field.

          • EasTex says:

He needs something to snap him out of his lethargy. 🙂

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah. This last game scenario is really bs. Our league is trying to have a 10 team league and deregulate the 12 team rule. But the Big 10 is blocking it. They want us to have 12 and not play a round robin.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Someone who passes a Barry Sanders record deserves the Heisman

  • Wilson says:

Wow…Baker not in the final 3 for the Heisman. Intersting. Well looks like the kid has been looked over again. Guess you can argue for all 3 of the finalist. That’s ok. Just more fuel for the fire…Boomer!

    • ND52 says:

First we get moved to Miami and now this. Well, all I can say is: thanks for the motivational incentives college football!

  • Wilson says:

Insult to injury…a Longhorn with the non-selection announcement.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Just putting this out there. We have Siebert for three more years, but wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a guy waiting in the wings that could at least do one of his duties or KO until he graduates. This kid Manny Berz is from the same HS that KJ Young went to and is currently a JR.

    • JD says:

We had three Okies do quite well in the kicking world competition this weekend in San Diego (invite only…kids from 15 states)…2 of them finished top 5 in fgs…two of them top 4 in punting and they ranged between 57 and 62 yards on KOs…all three are 17 guys

  • KJ1123 says:

In all honesty, Baker to me was more like the 4th player in the Heisman. Not a knock on Baker at all. It would of been nice to go represent OU. BUT I would much rather win it all this year! Baker is a total team guy, it would almost seem not him if he were to be at the Heisman. The award he won today is a testament to his perseverance as a person and I think is pretty special. I hope they keep adding fuel to the fire….I hope they say Clemson will run us out of the building and Watson is better than Baker.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

FS1 pregame doing a spot on Pearl Harbor

  • Zack says:

Mayfield’s numbers are comparable to the last 3 or 4 qb heisman winners. Clearly the voters dont care about a players overall impact on a team. That said the other 3 guys deserve to be in New York but I think mayfield deserves that recognition as well.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

    Early eval linked posted below:

“It’s easy to see this game proving to be a lower scoring contest than commonly assumed simply because OU is well equipped to handle Clemson’s spread while the Sooners are likely to struggle facing a defense with the level of athletes Clemson has and without Mayfield’s safety blanket (Shepard) likely to be open as often thanks to Alexander’s coverage.

In fact, it’s not hard to see Clemson having some success replicating Texas’ strategy of locking down receivers and controlling Mayfield by virtue of having lots of good athletes on the field tracking him down. The quality of Big 12 defenses this year was down due to TCU’s injury problems, Texas’ youth, and K-State’s injuries. OU had a good defense but their own offense didn’t have to face it on Saturdays.

The line frankly makes no sense save for the fact that there’s always likely to be money coming in for OU. Clemson has been equally impressive this season while facing a tougher schedule when you factor in Oklahoma’s luck with opposing team injuries. I’ll have to look deeper but early on I like Clemson a lot in this one.”

An Oklahoma victory would probably look like hanging around and getting Mayfield going late in the game, a difficult formula to stop. If they can’t handle Watson’s running though I could see this getting away from them.

He should start next year the favorite, and I reckon OU will start the season ranked #1 and if we make the final 4 and his season is close to this season, he’ll be the odds on favorite probably.

      • SoonerSpock says:

That is all to be determined Clemson loses fewer players this year than do the Sooners (4 Sr. starters and OU 7 Sr. starters). Also DeShaun Watson, Clemson and Christian McCaffery, Stanford both who made it to New York for the Heisman this year will be the favorites starting off next season. Baker will be listed at #3 at best as Leonard Fournette at LSU also returns and will be high on the list. Remember he was leading for the Heisman until Bama beat LSU and statistically Henry out rushed Fournette by only 56 yards for the regular season but also added 189 yards for CCG.

Clemson and OU should both contend for the CFP Playoffs in 2016. Stanford loses their Sr. QB Hogan and LSU doesn’t have a QB so as the season progresses it is likely that Watson and Mayfield will elevate over the other candidates as team performance always appears to be a leading factor in who wins the Heisman.

      If we needed even MORE:

Clemson TE Jordan Leggett: “We have all the momentum. They’re not an obstacle for us. They’re just an opportunity for us to get better and move on to the next game. So far for me, I’m 2-0 in that stadium, so I don’t think it’s going to change.”

Nothing like them looking ahead to the game after us. I guess he means the Auburn game–it’s their opening game for next season.

    • Nate Broadus says:

They’ll have to prove it on the field.

Hopefully, they start by shutting down Deshaun Watson. Wouldn’t that just stun the college football world?

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

It’s clear they held not playing on championship week against Baker. That only matters because they want it to. They kept asking if that would hurt OU over and over until it did. It’s like a lie that’s gets spread until it becomes the truth. Oh, well. He’ll win the title and then take the Heisman next year.

    • RBear says:

      smart man

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Even saw some Austin Statesman writers backing Baker Mayfield.

      • KJ1123 says:

And really not just Baker….this will fire up the whole team and especially Linc and the offense.

        • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Yup. I don’t think they’ll be snubbing Mayfield when next season comes around and he’s got a natty to his name. 🙂

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Can we get some ideas on defending Clemson’s read option and QB.

      • KJ1123 says:

Imo, the key to the read option has always been about athletic, super explosive ends who are the read. I think our d-line has been getting coached well to defend it. I’m sure Clemson will try to go back and watch the Texsa film to see how they ran against us. But as everyone knows, this isn’t that same team.

        • Martin says:

I noticed that Clemson’s line did not try to create holes. KInd of WV zone run game. I think delayed blitzes and DL movement on every play?

          • KJ1123 says:

Delayed blitzes in the mix definitely. Strike has been doing that alot more and he’s getting some good pressure when he does. hes’ disguising it good.

      • Golfluvr13 says:

Do you remember the Big 12 title game against Nebraska? Every time their QB handed off he still got planted. They did not run the read option much after halftime. I see the same thing happening against Clemson. Punish the QB when running it, it will be an easy read then.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

    Good start

  • Sooner Ray says:

    MBB thread up now.

  • David Morris says:

Wow I can’t believe he did not get the invite. Thought he could win it. It is ridiculous the way the prop henry up because he set sec records.

  • Kevin Burger says:

Mayfield and Watson’s stats are all very similar, there are two key differences, Mayfield is 3 times as likely to get sacked, Watson is twice as likely to turn the ball over.

  • Eric Hutton says:

Baker will show everyone who really should have won the heisman in Miami and then Glendale. National Championship bound. Boomer!!!

  • j l says:

Complete bullsh*t he didnt get invited.

I hope watson wins it, so we can plant it firmly up his ass, weinke style.

  • Maverick says:

    Just my 2 cents.

The backloaded schedule actually hurt Mayfield in the Heisman more than anything. If we had played Baylor in early October, he’d have been getting talked about like that all year.

I’m as big of a homer as most of you, but I don’t feel like Mayfield was a top 3 player in the country. Had Boykin and Seth Russell not been hurt, he might’ve been 3rd team All-Big XII.

I hope McAffree wins it. I fell like there are 50 rb’s who could’ve put up similar numbers as Henry behind that line.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I disagree. Baker Mayfield is a top 3 player in the country. But when you have two stud RBs, as well, Mayfield doesn’t have to do all the work like Henry, Watson, and McCaffery.

    • Brien Brown says:

Yea well they didn’t stay healthy and he did for the most part. All you can do is play who is in front of you and do what you can and he clearly means a lot to the team, does help he has a stud wr and 2 stud rb’s a young but hungry oline and a stingy D. But, maybe that hurt him cause he didn’t have to do it all, but we saw a glimpse of how bad they would of been without him in the TCU game, think that more than anything speaks volumes of how good he is. Make a valid argument next time otherwise you sound like the pundits that didn’t vote for him!

      • Brien Brown says:

Also Baker and the OU coaches didn’t make the schedule and in fact he threw for more TD’s in the earlier games than he did in the later ones all he did against those teams was make the plays that mattered!

    • OohRah Mama says:

Couldn’t disagree more. Baker Mayfield isn’t just one of the top 3 players in the country – he personifies all the attributes for which the Heisman stands & why it is given.
No offense, but that statement weakens the validity of your OU Homer card. 🙂

    • Mizuno44 says:

I disagree with everything you said except for “Baker”, “Heisman”, and “Top 3 player in the country”.

    • Clint Lenard says:

I agree with you regarding McCaffrey, but Mayfield was the best player in the country, and the only closest was Watson. QB’s have a MUCH more complicated job than a RB, so it’s absurd to listen to these talking heads push for RB’s, yet then say “but the Heisman should be about the best player in the country, and should mirror the draft”. Henry will be lucky to get taken in the first round, whereas any good QB will be taken in the top 15.

      • Maverick says:

Lol, well…. After reading all of your comments. It appears I may not be near as big of a homer as you guys. Just my opinion. Sticking to my guns. Baker is the perfect player for us and exactly what we needed. But not Heisman caliber imo.

        • j l says:

If watson is heisman caliber, so is mayfield. Baker’s QB rating is almost 20 points higher, against a tougher SoS.

        • Clint Lenard says:

It’s funny that everyone has to be a homer, yet you only say “not Heisman caliber”. Derp. Look at his stats and what he’s done and compare them to the last 3 Heisman winners, then consider the fact that he has 2 NFL RB’s in the backfield. Sounds like you’re just trolling…

          • Maverick says:

Or maybe my opinion is different than yours? His stats are good. Doesn’t make him the best player in the country. I feel the same about Henry. Stats are great, I don’t think he’s Heisman worthy either.

          • Clint Lenard says:

His stats are better than most other QB’s that have won it over the past decade, and that’s not even considering the fact that he has to share the back field with 2 NFL RB’s. But then you consider his leadership qualities, getting the team pumped, putting his body on the line, blocking down field, etc. – and that doesn’t make him Heisman quality, but everyone is a homer for thinking so? Makes sense.

          • Maverick says:

So no one can reasonable disagree with you huh? His intangibles are insanely good. Not doubting that. I just wouldn’t say he’s very slightly outside the top group. What does sharing a backfield have to do with anything? Most elite teams have NFL caliber talent in the backfield. And lets hold off on calling Joe Mixon and NFL rb.

          • Clint Lenard says:

            Lmao. Okay, you’re trolling.

        • DrewChubbs says:

I’m too lazy to look at the numbers, so I’m not sure what the current talley is. I do know that Baker’s numbers, after 10 games, were smack dab in the middle of Jason White’s and Sam Bradford’s totals. That would give him Heisman numbers. That alone is pretty convincing.

          • Maverick says:

His stats are good. Would say Bradford and White were more dominant in their Heisman years. I’m not saying Baker isn’t really really good. I just think he’s slightly outside the top 3.

  • Kevin says:

Unfortunate that Baker got shut out of the Heisman, OU got dropped to 4, Shep got shut out of the Biletnikoff, and crazy people are still saying that Iowa and Stanford are more deserving of making the playoff. I hope the good guys crush the opposition in every which way possible.

    • BoomerDave says:

I haven’t heard a single person anywhere say that Iowa and Stanford are more deserving than the Sooners to be in the playoffs!!

      • Kevin says:

Haha that’s why I clarified “crazy people” – I made the mistake of clicking through some link on Facebook, where there were a few articles claiming that because Iowa lost on a last-second score by MSU after a perfect regular season, and Stanford won the Pac-12 (which is apparently more challenging than the Big 12), they deserved more consideration than OU. I’m sure that in the process of clicking that link I ended up downloading a virus to my computer.

  • ccmosaic says:

I think if he would not have gotten hurt in that TCU game he would have been invited. I honestly think he would have blown that game wide open come second half. He will be in the talks early next year. One more reason for this team to be mad and feel disrespected.
I imagine if you ask Baker: Would you rather have the award or the championship? He would choose the championship any day.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Baker Mayfield can always Walk-On to the Heisman Ceremony, right? He’ll show up uninvited and win it anyway.

  • SamSooner says:

Baker not being invited is the ultimate insult. This is a close team. They’ve upset the entire team.

      • Kevin Burger says:

Big TE who is 3rd/4th in receiving, and has 7 TDs on the year? Even if we don’t have an answer for him, they may not use him enough for it to matter.

        • blaster1371 says:

Jordan Evans is pretty good in coverage. Hit that prick in the mouth as he comes of the line and let Thomas deal with the scraps.

        • Birddawg says:

Its those guys that are 3/4th in receiving on both teams that will need to make the Big play. convert third down, swing momentum, take pressure off their Playmakers.
Remember the derrick woods catch in the sugar bowl.
The team that gets the production from those guys sets themselves up for success.

      • Chezrus says:

He is a very capable te/fb. Big athletic body and they tend to run behind him often. Then they will slip him out on a play action and he can catch the ball. He could be a factor in this game… Especially if they begin to run the ball effectively.

        • Birddawg says:

Any big athletic TE is valuable.
Stopping the run/ gallman is important inbetween the tackles with your front four. Sets up the entire Offense.

    • Martin says:

I know Henry is a beast physically, but when I watch him run.. he is much closer to Ron Dayne in style than Adrian Peterson. Dayne set the all time rushing record, but he never got serious Heisman consideration b/c of Wisconsin’s stature. This just feels a lot like the year they handed to the trophy to Gino Torreta.

  • Zack says:

Baker being snubbed for the heisman is a big deal especially since he had better numbers than Watson against better teams. If losses matter then Watson should be the only one in attendance however that’s not the case. My guess is Henry wins it because of the constant sec mind f*** that is ESPN. Like it was mentioned below “about 50 guys could have done the same thing as Henry” that is an exaggeration obviously but I guarantee there’s 10 or 15 who could have done the same or even more. Dalvin cook for electric, Perine is just as tough to bring down, and fournette is probably still the best of all. And mcaffrey was all everything for Stanford but how much good do that do for the team? They lost 2 games…
Baker is the only one who lifted the guys around him.

Shepard being snubbed from the biletnikoff finalists is just as mind blowing.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Pro Football Focus has Baker Mayfield as the #1 QB, and Shepard as #1 WR in the country.

  • Docknoss says:

Tell me this isn’t real? If so we are going to be pumped.

  • BleedCrimson says:

I could be wrong, but Henry just comes across as a student athlete that really, really needs the tutor department. Can you say “Bubba Gump Shrimp”?

  • Zack says:

Stanford going into Texas and taking 2 pretty good running backs in one class. Speights and Stephens.

    • Kevin Burger says:

True. Of course, if someone gets an offer from Stanford, they should strongly consider it. They’re no OU on the field, but it’s a great university.

      • Kevin says:

Especially if they get a full scholarship to Stanford – it’s a pretty expensive education.

    • Brien Brown says:

I think Speights was high on us but, don’t think we was making him a high priority.

      • Zack says:

Whaley reopened his recruiting tonight and some Georgia fan obviously had something stupid to say to him. I’m sure he ends up at Arkansas now or maybe Miami.

        • Brien Brown says:

If and I say if he was to approach the OU coaching staff and said he was interested in us again you think we would entertain taking him?

          • Zack says:

Nope. We got Adams and we probably told Adams were only taking one. So I don’t want us lying to a recruit just because another target reopened. Plus I think Adams is the better fit. I don’t know if he will be as explosive as Ronald jones but I hope he has that same burst.

        • Brien Brown says:

of those 2 I’d say Arkansas

      • Fear The Magic says:

his hudl didnt blow me away

        • EasTex says:

I saw a couple of his games. He was the stud on the field and made some nice, clutch runs. However, his physique didn’t look like a D1 type RB and don’t think he could change that with a good training program, he has chronic noassatall.

    • Zack says:

I would tell my son if he got an offer to any school like Stanford northwestern or duke, that I would pack his bags and drive him there myself.

Yes, my only kiddo. He is now working on getting his teaching certs, so that he can teach while working on his graduate program. I only want him to be happy and make a living doing what he enjoys.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Nobody has mentioned our LB play lately which had been pretty great this year, sorry Kish once again. I believe that has been as big as our secondary improvement, and a huge anchor heading into championship season

  • Mustvid says:

Great picture of the Stooper, Boz, and The King!

  • Wishbone4Life says:

To be honest I don’t want Whaley. I don’t think he’s an OU level RB

    • Wolfdog says:

That comment will go in your permanent file.

      • Brien Brown says:

I don’t think he fits OUr system he will be a good back I think but, not in this system. But if Perine can I think most any back could they said this spread would hurt Perines production

        • DrewChubbs says:

I think the only thing that hurt Perine’s production this year was that we didn’t use him enough in the first 5 games.

          • Sooner Ray says:

There is some truth to that. It took Riley a few games to figure out the best way to incorporate these backs into his offense.

          • EasTex says:

On espnu film room Belloti(sp?) showed on film the subtle change they made in the formation that has made all the difference…aside from Samia’s development. Perine and Mixon had been lining up almost beside Baker through the Texsa game. After that, they line up almost 2 yards behind him on either side. Small change, but with tremendous results.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I remember seeing that, it’s the little things.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I noticed that too. that extra yard or two behind the QB not only gives them more momentum but also gives the line that split second to open up holes for them.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Perine and Mixon requested this change after the shorthorn game. They said it allowed them to see the holes better and gave them a chance to get some momentum going before hitting the hole. SoonerSports had a good write up on it a few weeks ago. It was an interview with Riley.

          • EasTex says:

            Thanks, didn’t know that.
For such a minor adjustment, it has produced significant results.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Yes it has. It happened when Riley got the entire offense together and asked them what they wanted to do on offense. He listened to all suggestions and we have seen the fruits of his labor from that. I love that he is a coach that says, ok what can you do good and we will do that.

          • MoJoOkie says:

            Vision and velocity.

  • Austin says:

While at work tonight I was discussing the game with a Clemson fan, and after listening to how Ou didn’t have a chance because “we haven’t faced a defense like theirs all year” and “what good defenses have you played this year” he hit me with this statement: “Are yall ready for Wayne Gallman?” I laughed in his face and continued my work.

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

South Carolina scored more points on them than they did anyone else all season. And I’m almost positive NC State scored over 40 on them.

      • Austin says:

Exactly. They’ve given up 69 points combined the last two games to the Carolina schools. And gave up 41 to NC state. None of those teams have the athletes we have. If Ou can come out and run the ball successfully and grind on the Clemson front 7 that isn’t very deep, then I will feel excellent about Ou’s chances in this game.
