Trajan Bandy: The Sooners had 2017 CB & OU commit Trajan Bandy (Miami, FL) in town this weekend, who prior to committing had yet to actually visit Norman. So there was still a question of whether he would feel comfortable with his decision once he did finally make it to campus. I spoke with Bandy’s father Sunday night, who accompanied his son on the visit, and he said, “We loved it. Trajan felt so at home and feels as locked in as he can be.”

There are still a number of schools working overtime to pry Bandy away from the Sooners, most notably Will Muschamp and South Carolina. But Bandy’s father emphasized that after that visit to Oklahoma, his son is solid to the Sooners. – (Super K)

Deontre Thomas: 2017 DT Deontre Thomas (Mustang, OK) also made it to Norman for the spring game this past weekend. Thomas holds offers from Michigan, Texas A&M, Arkansas, among others, and has been in regular communication with the OU staff.

Thomas shared with TFB that Calvin Thibodeaux has told him an OU offer is coming at some point, but Thomas did leave Norman without said offer. Thomas went on to add that he and Thibodeaux spent a good deal of time together over the weekend, but as far as if, or when, an offer may come is still uncertain. – (Super K)

Spring Game: We’ll have some notes up on the spring game itself here in a bit, but for now I did want to say at the outset it appears Oklahoma has more quality depth at just about every position group as compared to last year.

– Alston Orji: The Sooners made a big impression with 2018 LB Alston Orji (Rockwall, TX), who was in town for the spring game and wound up leaving with an OU offer. We fully expect Orji to be a national recruit as things progress, but the OU staff made the right move getting in early.

As you can see in the images below, one of the things that has really helped the Sooners this year in recruiting is a more concerted effort to recruit each player as a staff. We can tell you the Orji family thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

– Asante Samuel: The Sooners also made the Top 10 for 2018 CB offer, Asante Samuel.

PLEASE HELP: As many of you know, last weekย conferences voted on allowing satellite camps (camps that allowed coaches from universities to work at camps around the country) at which the votes came in favor of banning those camps. This is obviously harmful for young folks who have a difficult time and/or cannot afford to travel long distances to college campuses. As an example, Wyoming did a satellite camp in Oklahoma last year and multiple OK Preps kids picked up scholarship offers as a result.

There are great camps, like the Sound Mind Sound Body camp (sponsored by Adidas), that under this ban would no longer be possible. This camp is a place where coaches can come to central locations around the country and work with players they wouldn’t otherwise see. They also focus on developing the student-athlete as an individual, outside of just football.

There are a number of additional negative results from this ban, but for the sake of brevity I will leave those for another time. A number of parents are working towards encouraging the NCAA boardย to not accept to the ban when the board meets again in two weeks.

The mother of WR Donovan Peoples-Jones has initiatedย a petition that will be read by the NCAA Board of Directors, who has the power to overturn NCAA legislation. Here is a tweet from Donovan Peoples-Jones expressing his thoughts on satellite camps and the NCAA ban.

We are asking everyone on here to sign the petition that will be read by the NCAA board. You can e-sign it HERE. I know there are thousands and thousands of readers on this site everyday, so we’d like to see the number of signatures increase significantly as soon as this post goes up. Thank you! – (Super K)

I don’t understand why you tell a kid you will offer him in the future and not just offer him then and there. I don’t get it, either offer him or don’t, but don’t jack with him like that. I would be turned off if it were me.

    • rphokc says:

ditto, sounds like playing games………perhaps it’s one of those deals where thibs wants to see him play but that’s not stated

      • hOUligan says:

I am sure they just want to watch him his SR year. But dollars to donuts I will go all HWMNBN on ya’ll right now and make this prediction. Marvin Wilson is not coming to OU. And Greg Rogers from Vegas will more likely end up at USC or UCLA where most of the Bishop Gorman kids end up. Akail Byers will stay home in Arkie or go to ‘Bama. Mark it and I will happily eat a large portion of crow should OU get any of those 3.

      • Brent says:

sounds to me that OU is being completely honest and upfront with him and maintaining good communication which is a breath of fresh air in college recruiting.

    • hOUligan says:

Same same. Kid looks great on film, good enough for Michigan and Arkie. Another case of the OU staff chasing unicorns and rainbows w/ some out-of-state kid w/ similar talent who is less likely to come to OU and end up losing out on both.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

I’m okay with chasing the big fish and all, just don’t tell the kid that you will offer him in the future. Just say he is still under evaluation or something like that.

        • hOUligan says:

Don’t get me wrong. OU should not be afraid to go anywhere after any kid. But be realistic. And this kid’s film is good. I watched his film after JY brought it to our attention and like the kid.

          • CcrBoomer says:

You just do what Bama does if its a numbers game. Over sign by 10 house them with a rich Alumnus kid that way when they are always seen driving that new hummer around town, it’s always his roommates truck

    • Rick says:

On the surface at times it sounds like that, but I wonder if at times, there is a numbers game going on behind the scenes with some sort of a rating system to see if a kid has the measurables, and if the position is in need. It would be confusing to me, much less a 16-18 yr. old to be trying to make a decision on might and maybe, and “let’s see at a later time”. Not much to hold onto.

    • Super K says:

Sooners are really big on only making offers that they can honor and certainly with in-state kids. And so I think it’s about being certain because if you offer and in-state kid there’s always a chance he’s going to commit on the spot or shortly thereafter. And the Sooners are in a good spot with the DT out of Plano and they’ve got Greg Rogers coming in this summer.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Yea I get that, I just wish they wouldn’t tell the kid that he has an offer coming. If we get both of those guys, then he probably won’t be offered and then we look like a bunch of jerks at that point.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I think what you said makes perfect sense. But then again, no one wants to be played in any type of relationship. Let’s hope it doesn’t turn him off.

      • hOUligan says:

Understood it’s a numbers game. And the OU staff has an ‘eye’ and know better. But the kid has racked up offers from Michigan, Arkie, A&M and Ol Miss. If he’s ‘sec’ good, he’s good enough to get on the field at OU I would think. To me it just seems like the out-of-state kid always looks better than the kid right in your backyard. If Thomas played in Dallas or Houston, he’d have even more offers and likely one from OU. But like, just my opinion, man.

        • BoomerDave says:

Holding offers from mid-level SEC schools doesn’t really sway me. Personally I hope the kid gets an OU offer. Just recently realized that his Mom was a Facebook friend of mine (she still goes by her maiden name, not Thomas). I’ll have to do some digging into this. Lol.

          • hOUligan says:

Does your ‘interest’ lie w/ Deontre and offers/lack or to see how mama is holding up?? LoL For me, it’s no ‘single offer’. But schools like Mich, Neb, Miss, Arkie …. while maybe ‘mid-level’, they are working hard to get to the top and aren’t likely to throw scholarships around in the process, IMHO. They see something and that he fits. Maybe the kid simply doesn’t ‘fit’ what Thibs wants to do? V^V

          • BoomerDave says:

Sounds to me like Thibs wants to offer, just hasn’t gotten Bob or Mike to sign off on it yet.

    • Super Keith says:

There’s also a big risk in offering a kid that still has two years of high school ball left to play. In some cases, the risk is worth taking because the talent is just too good to pass up an early opportunity. Since Stoops has virtually always honored a scholarship if the recruit gets injured, and like Super K said, whenever a scholarship goes out it’s going to be honored (unless the position gets filled), and with so few scholarships available each year, it’s risky business.

As an example, I think the Sooners should have already offered Jordan and Joshua Moore (out of Youkam), but again, they have two years left to play and a lot can happen in those two years.

The move to stop satellite camps reminds me of that crap we’ve all seen where management uses a shotgun and goes after everyone when a rifle is in order to take out the problem everyone else can see. Likely an over-reaction to things like Harbaugh deciding to take his show to Florida. It impacts primarily low income student/athletes and families. Shameful.

    • Drew says:

Exactly. I understand the desire to curb Harbaugh’s stunts, and I agree to some degree, but a complete and immediate ban on camps outside of campus’ is ridiculous.

    • Super Keith says:

No doubt in my mind that this was an SEC lobbied vote as a knee-jerk reaction to Michigan/Harbaugh’s recent activity. What’s so pathetic is that the schools voting for the ban apparently aren’t looking past Michigan…because this ban is going to end up hurting everyone.

      • hOUligan says:

A bit like the sec feeling the sudden need to protect student-athletes from injury due to the speed of the game as a result of up-tempo offenses they were having trouble competing against. Hmmmm……

An NCAA ban of Satellite Camps has an unattended consequence… social stratification and class warfare. These camps allow kids of ‘lesser means’ the opportunity to be in front of many coaches they would not normally be seen by. Kids from more affluent backgrounds can go on unofficial visits wherever they please and ultimately have far more exposure without there being centralized camps where many coaches can see kids from all backgrounds competing. With more exposure, these kids get better opportunities to find the right future fit, the right life mentors, and the right culture for their long-term success as a student athlete.

A couple of crazy coaches are always trying to stretch the limits to there max and so the NCAA, in the name of the “student-athlete”, shuts down the only avenue many of these kids have to showcase their talent and move forward with their carrers!

  • SamSooner says:

Super K/Jordan, thanks for putting this OP together and thanks for bringing the petition to our attention.

I am disappointed in the Big XII schools who voted in favor of ending satellite camps.

I hope the recruits take note and make them feel the pain for years to come. There should be a movement to get a list of teams who voted in favor of ending the satellite camps; go public with their names and encourage those kids to give them the boot as soon as they come calling.

There needs to be a marketing campaign that will give these selfish leaders some negative publicity:

Recruits, the following schools voted in favor of ending satellite camps. As it is a financial challenge for some of you and your family to get you to camps, satellite camps helped bridge that financial gap. Satellite camps are critical access points which help get you the necessary exposure to D1 coaches.

Here is a list of schools who voted in favor of ending satellite camps. These schools made this decision fully aware of the negative impact that this has on your future. If you are fortunate enough to have received a D1 offer, please consider not attending any school whose name is on this list.

The universities who are on this list are concerned about gaining a competitive advantage on the field of play, not your future. They are the antithesis of the American Dream.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

But but the NCAA is there for students athletes

    • hOUligan says:

Well thought out and nicely written piece, Sam. I would be sure and mention this to kids I was recruiting. 1st sentence of the last paragraph pretty well sums it up.

      • SamSooner says:

        Thanks, hOUligan!

It mind-boggling that someone thought that this is a great idea. Wow!

        • hOUligan says:

Can someone, anyone, remind me of the last time the NC$$ ruled in favor of the student-athlete as I’m having trouble recalling how that idea that they are ‘there’ to protect the interests of the S/A got started.

          • SamSooner says:

I can’t do it. They seem to rule in favor of its investors, instead.
This is where a players union could come in handy. Current players could choose to boycott if this ban wasn’t reversed.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

If they give Baker his final year, all is forgiven. But not holding my breath.

    • Stephen says:

Basically all the Texas schools voted against satellite camps. One more reason to leave the Big 12 is Texas schools will do what’s good for them rather than what would be good for the conference.

      • SamSooner says:

I certainly hope Boren is keeping copious notes.

        How’s your Dad?

        • Stephen says:

I kind of expect a Boren indirect response to this soon. He’s a chess player and this just another way for him to strengthen his argument about issues in the Big 12.

And he’s doing pretty great, thanks for asking!

      • Drew says:

That raises the question though: who were the two other schools that voted for it? I’m assuming a majority was needed, so that’s 6 schools, and there’s only 4 texsa schools.

        • SamSooner says:

I think I saw K-State and Iowa State. I could be wrong.

          • Drew says:

What do they have to gain, though? Neither state is a hotbed, and so I would think these camps would help them? I guess they might suspect they could get more middle-tier recruits out of Texsa with the less competition, but I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Hmm.

          • SamSooner says:

I’m sure they are playing to the economic situation in their region. If they can keep other D1 coaches away from their kids, they increase their chances of signing them.

          • Rick says:

I’m guessing ISU was not one of the them, my friend. http://amestrib.com/sports/football-campbell-furious-about-satellite-camp-ban

          • Rick says:

I was just curious myself. I have never met you, but I’m confident you are VERY trustworthy. I’m still trying to find out how the big12 polled on the voting, just haven’t found it yet.

          • hOUligan says:

Good on you. I’ve been searching, too. Seems the vote breakdown should be easy to find…huh…??

          • Rick says:

It’s in between the lines on some and blatant on others, but kinda hard to find.

          • metzker says:

Bash on metz day,i get it!!!!!

          • SamSooner says:

National past time. We invite you to come bash on Metz. Bring your ex-girlfriend and her bobble-head right eye.

I shudder: the thought of that eye gives me vertigo.

          • hOUligan says:

And herein lies the problem: Campbell quote “”โ€œI am coming from the non-power five school,โ€ Campbell said. โ€œWe made a living on those camps.โ€

So they threw out the baby w/ the bathwater, forgetting their own mandate: “”Campbell believes the ruling goes against core NCAA principles of protecting athletes and creating โ€œa fair and equal balance across all Division I athletics.

        • Stephen says:

Whoever is on Texas’s leash, I’d assume. Not sure who that is. Good question though.

          • Defend Colfax says:

I’d say KSU’s Kirk Schulz who coincidentally just left to Washington State as of this week.

        • Super Keith says:

Take Baylor off the Texas school list that voted for the ban. That leaves 3, plus three other (to get the majority). OU wasn’t one of them, so it would be interesting to know who the other 3 were.

      • Super Keith says:

I have to think Baylor voted against the ban. Since they have a deal with Michigan/Harbaugh, a ban hurts them more immediately than some of the others. Otherwise, I think you’re correct that most of the Texas schools voted for the ban.

      • Sooner Man says:

Texas still wants the Southwest Conference part 2 and that is Texas this and Texas that so end of line.

      • John Garner says:

How did we vote? Anyone know?

    • David Morris says:

Well said, and Texas still sucks!

    • Super Keith says:

It’s sounding a lot like Texas led the way for schools to vote for the ban (in the Big XII). Much like the SEC, it was a very short sighted stance. They were so anxious to keep other programs out of their backyard that they never thought about how the ban was going to affect their own programs.

There are so many things wrong with the current NCAA rule book, yet they attack this one topic because a few programs held camps a long way from their school. Every time I hear the NCAA or a member school talk about how “important it is to put/keep the student athlete at the forefront, and do what’s best for them” I just think how much garbage that is, and how hypocritical they are by saying those things.

It’s situations like this that cause the public to view the NCAA as a joke.

      • SamSooner says:

Keith, you are so right, on both counts: the short-sightedness of Texas schools, as well as the $EC and that the NCAA sucks. They are worthless.

For a while I was going back and forth between starting on a 300cc or a 600cc, and ended up picking a 300cc. I don’t have any riding experience so I figured it was best to start on a beginner bike. I like the Yamaha R3. Has the best reviews as far as 300s go. It’s a bit pricey for a starter bike but I probably won’t upgrade to a 600 for a while so I’m okay with it.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Dont know where you are located, But here in OKC there is a Motorcycle training course. They provide the bike and instruction. And if you pass you do not have to take the riding portion of the Licence test, My wife was not sure about riding at first so i signed her up and now she rides her own and will not ride on the back of any ones anymore. I know it’s easy but I still can’t help but be a little nervous. I’m thinking of taking an MSF online Course soon since I won’t be taking the actual course until this summer. Figure it’ll be a good prep until then.
That’s pretty cool that you and your wife ride together. I don’t think there are many bikers in my area but hopefully I’ll meet some! For now I’m just saving up for the bike.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Dont give up on saving, The more you save the better bike you can get. And as for bikers in Texsa there are tons of them. Just depends on what kind of group you want to ride with. Just going on mere speculation because of your bike preference i would not try to jump right in with the 1% clubs, Just give it a google about motorcycle clubs in your area and you will be surprised at what you will find. Good luck in whatever you choose. There is nothing quite like hitting the open road on a bike.

          • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I hear ya’. I definitely don’t want to end up riding with a bunch of squids doing wheelies down the highway and not wearing much gear.
Thanks! I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been wanting to ride for a while now so I’m counting down the days.

Tex’ish, Not to intrude on your convo, however when you hit the Dragon also try Highway 28 AKA Moonshiner HWY. Of course not as many twists and turns but very beautiful ride. I have family in Bryson City,NC The Dragon was fun, just watch out for the showoff’s.

          • Tex'ish says:

Thanks for the tip 47 – will do, AND, yup – gonna be watchin hard for the showoff’s…

If some of you are following celebrities on Twitter, hit’em up with the petition.

  • SamSooner says:

That number is coming down very fast. We’re moving the needle on this very important issue.

    • hOUligan says:

Me thinks this has struck a nerve w/ you, Sam, as it should w/ any ‘fair-minded’ person I would think.

      • Defend Colfax says:

It was a very cold decision based on $$$$. I can understand not paying a stipend but too many times the NCAA crosses the line and this is one.

      • SamSooner says:

It has. I can’t stand to see kid not be given every opportunity to succeed. I don’t like to see people mistreated or wronged. Sometimes I get too passionate but this is just stupid. I tweeted Shaq and asked him to retweet to his 11 million Twitter followers.

  • KJ1123 says:

I hope the Orange TFBers are helping with the petition as well.

    • metzker says:

      Was wondering that myself!

    • hOUligan says:

      Interesting thought. Let’s ask them!!!

edit: Interestingly, maybe Super K would be in a unique position to know the thoughts of the texsa fan base.

    • Defend Colfax says:

Does not seem to be posted. How did the BigXII schools vote on this?

      • KJ1123 says:

I have no clue. But if there was a vote and a couple of Big12 schools in Texsa voted against it, I can only imagine which 2 they were.

        • Defend Colfax says:

The BigXII voted in favor against them. OU voted for, I can only assume the Texas schools voted in unison.

    • SamSooner says:

They need to beat the doors down in Austin and tell those knuckle heads (the administrators) they are going to cause this conference to dissolve. That’s what I’d prefer the orange TFBers take on.

    • jimintexas says:

Texas schools are the key people against it

      He did!

    • Rick says:

I’m a little slow KJ but catching up. When you said Orange, I was thinking lil bro, I realize you were referring to “dirty” Orange. Kyle is helping, I can’t believe the other guys want any camps anywhere near the the texsa metros.

      • KJ1123 says:

Yeah sorry about that, I meant the Texsa TFBers. I just think it’s a moot point, with all the different Social Media outlets and camps like Nike, you’re going to lose kids to out of state schools. Just a matter of time. Even if the point was to hide your diamonds in the rough…you will still lose some of your top recruits because of the exposure the internet gives now.

  • RobWild says:

He literally is arguing with his own talking points

    • RobWild says:

That last one was a real head scratcher for me. He goes from defending SEC, to saying he isn’t defending SEC, to literally admitting that he’s defending the SEC.

  • Stephen Dale says:

one reason to vote against the satellite camps is the actions of schools like Michigan who can afford to send its team to an onsite location in Florida. Other schools do not have the financial means to match Michigan dollar for dollar and that creates an unfair recruiting advantage for schools like Michigan….the ban , HOWEVER, should focus on allowing no spring training OFF Campus, period. Allowing satellite camps for those students financially unable to come to Norman seems like a good thing for the prospect as well as OU…Same applies to every school conducting a satellite camp….stopping off campus excursions such as Michigan did last month should be the focus of any legislation ; not creating additional obstacles for HS athletes…there is a difference……

there are some good offenses on that list.. Looking for a school he can play and get numbers hope he has a good career

  • Zack says:

I wonder if an OU offer would change that list. I think he’s OU good but I do think he’s like a dahu type guy that you wait until his senior year is over to offer. Although dahu probably gets an early offer from Simmons and Riley if they were here a year sooner.

    • Sooner Ray says:

The way he worded it makes one think he’s hoping for the “right” offer.

      • DrewChubbs says:

I kinda thought that too. Sort of, “Here are the top 10 of who has offered me so far.”

  • Jake says:

What a phenomenal quote to read. Easy to take for granted how special OU really is when you’re a lifelong Sooner.

  • Hotrod33 says:

Ok, did my part and signed the petition.
As for the spring game, I just don’t know how good we will really be and it was just good to see some type of football being played. You can see that we do have athletes on both sides of the ball and I think we will be better overall than we were last year. Time will tell, when we actually start playing a real game. I can’t wait til we play Houston. BOOMER!!!!

    • Pokerman says:

I think the ban is a really bad idea, but there should be some limits set to keep idiots like Harbaugh from abusing the practice.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Don’t put much stock in the spring, lot’s of development between now and fall. Offensively we should be better “if” receivers step up in critical situations. The questions, IMO, are on defense. Tons of talent but getting the right group together and playing assignment sound is key. Depth is looking good which is a plus.

      • Hotrod33 says:

Ray, I didn’t put much stock in it. Just some things that “looked good” but you don’t know til we actually get live action with another team. If we can get some of these guys to continue to develop thru out the summer, this team will be very good. Their talent is there, it will be how hungry will they be to reach their goals.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Instead of this spring fling, I would like to see a “scrimmage practice” with another school. Our linemen against theirs, our receivers against their DB’s, etc. Would be entertaining AND informative at the same time.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

Assignment sound is exactly right. Sooners have upgraded their size and talent at LB, but the youngsters have to learn quick.

The other Big 12 schools to sign the stupid NCAA rule against the camps had to be WV, KSU and KU. ISU did not, The Oklahoma did not and I am assuming OSU did not. Keith already said Baylor was not for the ban. That leaves a 6-4 vote for the ban with TU, TT, TCU, KSU,KU and WVU.

Missed ALL of Monday – late to the party, but I DID sign the petition and wrote a note of scorn for the aristocratic schools denying opportunities for the less privileged.

  • OohRah Mama says:

Signed the petition, THANKS! I added:

Young men and women today need guidance and support from us to head in the right direction; to allow as many positive experiences & opportunities for mentoring as we can give. This certainly includes those who are gifted athletically – who also may not be as gifted financially or opportunity-wise as others. I fully support and encourage satellite camps as a great example of opportunities for the student athletes. We have so little time in which to guide the younger generations in ways that will benefit our world as a whole. To deny young men & women the opportunity of satellite camps makes no sense in light of our obligation to help them become their best selves. You also have a excellent opportunity – to reverse the ban that closes great chances for the next generation of athletes. To widen these athletes’ worlds benefits the NCAA as well. After all, these are the future players who will generate the fan bases, the excitement, the ticket sales and the television coverage. Please seize this chance to bless countless young people whose chances to succeed are in danger of being narrowed by this ban. Those of us who are committed to helping them rise, learn & prosper will thank you. And in turn, your lives will be more blessed knowing you rose to the challenge. Don’t narrow the world our kids will live in, OPEN IT UP. LIFT THE BAN! – L.H.
