Sizing Up OU’s 2016 Signing Class

Feels kind of slow around here with most coming off the post-NSD high — or low as seemed to be the case in during my time hanging out in the comment section on Wednesday — so I figured something like this would be a good way to kill some time and possibly strike up a conversation or two.

The intent is to quickly kind of run through this 2016 class the Sooners just signed and give a best guess as to what this coming season may look like for each signee. Odds are you probably won’t agree 100% with my take on things, so please feel free to voice your opinion (regardless of mine) in the comments as per usual.

Honestly I’m not sure if this will really work or what it’s going to be, but I do know it won’t be some type of day after arbitrary ranking or grading of OU’s signing class. It’s never made any sense to me that people do this (let alone are paid, some quite handsomely, to do so) the day after the NFL Draft, and it makes even less sense to do it when you’re talking about high school kids, most of whom haven’t even graduated yet.

I’m also happily willing to concede most, if not all, of these “predictions” could easily prove to be wrong. Most of these kids aren’t even on campus yet, so offering up some predictions as to what may or may not happen during their respective freshmen seasons is certainly speculation at best.

So now that I’ve given you no point to keep reading, why don’t we get started.

RB Abdul Adams – This has got to be a redshirt, right? Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, Rodney Anderson, Alex Ross & Daniel Brooks. Why waste a year of Adams’ eligibility playing him a handful of snaps in 2016? Because Perine and Mixon might leave? Yeah, um, no. RB is arguably one of the easiest positions to transition from high school to college.

LB Emmanuel Beal – Given OU’s current situation at LB, I’m not sure how you could confidently anticipate a redshirt for anyone at this point, especially a JUCO guy.

DL Amani Bledsoe – Not entirely sure which way to go with this one. I could see a redshirt given all the young talent OU is returning along the defensive line, but they also aren’t exactly loaded at the DE spot. Could also depend a lot on whether OU goes back to more of a true four-man front now that Eric Striker has moved on. If I had to make a bet today, I’d say redshirt.

LB Kapri Doucet – Stoops said they are going to try him on the inside and there is certainly a need there with the loss of Dom Alexander. Don’t know that he’s going to come in this summer and win the starting job, but still a guy I’d expect to see the field (at a minimum on special teams, for example).

WR Zach Farrar – I want to say redshirt here if for no other reason/s than Jeffery Mead, Dallis Todd, AD Miller & Dahu Green as a group will already have at least a year or two under the belts. But outside of probably Dede Westbrook, my guess is the coaches approach spring & fall practices at WR as a truly open competition. So who knows (how about that analysis).

WR Adrian Hardy – This one I feel more comfortable calling as a redshirt. Which is meant in no way as a knock on Hardy, who is a dynamic athlete as Lincoln Riley went on about when he spoke Wednesday. But Hardy is super raw as a WR and with at least Jarvis Baxter and Michiah Quick ahead of him, I’d just kind of be surprised if he came in and played right away.

DE/OLB Mark Jackson – In listening to a bunch of stuff yesterday, Jackson seemed to be one of the more popular picks in terms of an “immediate impact” guy. It’s not secret the coaches love his upside as an edge rusher, and this defense is certainly looking to replace that following the loss of Striker and Devante Bond.

WR Mykel Jones – Another guy I heard a lot of people talking about as a possible candidate to come in and attempt to replace Sterling Shepard in this offense. As I suspect almost everyone would agree, it would probably be wise to pump the brakes on that kind of talk for now. Jones was a late add to this class, so I’m still learning about him and this ACL injury he’s apparently coming back from.

OL Ashton Julious – You know as well as I do OU heads into 2016 looking to fill both guard spots, and Bill Bedenbaugh has reportedly said Julious is one of the guys they’re looking to use (or at least start out at) that left guard spot. Whether or not he earns the starting gig, seems like an almost surefire bet to see the field next season.

LB Caleb Kelly – Even if he weren’t both OU & the Big 12’s lone five-star prospect signed on Wednesday, given the scary lack of depth OU currently has at OLB the expectation would still probably be for Kelly to come in and immediately compete for playing time. If we know anything about both Bob & Mike Stoops it’s that Kelly certainly won’t be handed a starting job, but I’d all but guarantee he’ll be afforded every opportunity to win it from the day he sets foot on campus.

QB Austin Kendall – You know the situation OU is facing a QB after the loss of Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas, so it’s not a matter of if Kendall is playing in 2016 so much as when. I say it like that because the Sooners don’t have your typical “warm up” season opener as they’ll be facing what could be a Top 15 Houston squad. And outside of Louisiana-Monroe in Week 2, it doesn’t really look like on paper they will have a ton of opportunity to get Kendall some live-action snaps through the first five weeks of the season. Feels like this will be something to really keep an eye on in the early going.

DB Parnell Motley – At 6’1″ you have to love his size, especially for what M.Stoops asks from his corners. And obviously OU has a CB spot opposite Jordan Thomas up for grabs. Of course one would have to believe guys like PJ Mbanasor and/or Dakota Austin will have a leg up in winning that spot, but at a minimum I think Motley’s size and ability puts him in the competition.

DB Jordan Parker – This is another guy people ‘in the know’ are really excited about. I can’t but think he’d greatly benefit from a redshirt year, but I also have this sneaking suspicion they’ll have trouble keeping him off the field.

OL Ben Powers – Another JUCO guy already on campus and likely to contend for one of those two guard spots. I’ve yet to really hear any logic as why people seem to be gravitating to the ‘Julious will be the starter’ bandwagon much more so than I’ve heard Powers’ name, but I’d also be interested to get JY’s take on things once we start to get some feedback from spring practices.

OL Logan Roberson – I believe Stoops said on Wednesday that the plan for Roberson was to start out at center, which for some reason kind of surprised me. Not entirely sure why that is, but with it already established that Jon Alvarez will be shifting from guard to center Roberson seems like an easy call here as a redshirt.

OL Erik Swenson – Unless they’re moving Dru Samia, I feel like you almost have to redshirt Swenson. If for no other reason that to get another year between him and both Samia & Orlando Brown.

DB Chanse Sylvie – Definitely think it works in his favor that he’s already on campus, but OU is also returning two multi-year starters at safety. Add to that they just brought in a big safety class last year and playing time could be hard to come by for not just Sylvie this coming season.

LB Jon-Michael Terry – I was kind of joking about it in the comments on Wednesday, but if you listened to any of what the coaches said I didn’t think they did this kid any favors in the over-hyping department. I think B.Stoops may have found his new Brody Eldridge-like man crush. All kidding aside, the coaches appear to absolutely love this kid’s athletic ability, versatility, and overall ceiling as a player. Again, seems like an obvious redshirt candidate to me but he’s a LB so….

OL Johncarlo Valentin – Once again, I’m certainly no JY but I see this kid as a quality right tackle. As far as we know, OU appears to be in good hands at right tackle. So redshirt here, right?

    Ben Powers seems nasty.

Any idea if we are still on Maxs Tupai?

  • AltoidSooner says:

Wondering if Dalton Wood will get on the field this year. I like his game if his head is in it.

  • mizzOUstu702 says:

Thoughts on Youngquist? I assume he’s basically in the same boat as Caleb Kelly.

    • Brien Brown says:

Lets just hope for his sake he will be able to play or whatever he is facing isn’t too serious. The kid has heart and will be a stud if he makes it.

      • mizzOUstu702 says:

Yeah same…I dunno – I kind of just assume that he’ll be coming in, but really not sure what personal issue he’s dealing with (obviously).

    • Jordan Esco says:

      same boat like how?

      • Brien Brown says:

I think he is referring to PT once on campus

        • Jordan Esco says:

Something will have to drastically change for Youngquist to make it to campus. I know people want to hold out hope and I can’t fault them for that, but at some point people are gonna have to accept the fact he’s likely not coming.

          • KJ1123 says:

I agree, I really think if the chances were 50/50, he would of signed. But hearing that he allegedly may never play again, even if that’s just a rumor that’s enough for me to believe he is not coming.

          • Jordan Esco says:

            yup

      • mizzOUstu702 says:

As in, if he does indeed make it in, then he would immediately compete for playing time. Should have clarified.

        • Jordan Esco says:

oh, yeah, sorry. if he were coming, then yes, for sure. but the odds of him coming at this point are very slim.

  • Malicong says:

I’ve heard that Ashton Julious is a little misplaced at guard and may not be anything more than a backup while he is in Norman. I know nothing about line play and I would really like to see JY’s input as to where these guys fit in.

    • KJ1123 says:

I honestly think, Julious is a year out from starting. He’s got some fundamentals to work on, but that’s just my opinion.

      • Brian says:

The thing with Julious is that he doesn’t have a redshirt year…unless he gets injured and has a medical redshirt year.

        • KJ1123 says:

Yeah unfortunately….if he’s is super focused and puts in a tone of work, he can get those techinque issues fixed. But he would need to be comfortable with it by fall camp because live fire is obviously alot different than just drilling.

  • KJ1123 says:

    To Jordans point on Valentin:

Im hearing Samia is getting reps at guard as of right now. Could be a precursor to what B has cooking. His main spot is still RT, but getting some work at guard.

    • Brien Brown says:

Get bigger to help open the run game a lil more and to well not get pushed around like they did against Texas and Clemson we lost trench battles those two games

      • KJ1123 says:

Right, Samia has really good feet, he probably pulls down the line and traps better than anyone on the roster. Trick is to get stout in the middle and obviously not give up too much on the edge at the same time. I’d like to see someone like Dalmier step as well.

        • Brien Brown says:

Definitely wanna be big and strong on the line in both aspects of course. I like what your putting out there. Will be interesting to see them develop and what they cook up. Gonna have to protect Mayfield without babying him so much it hurts the flow of the offense

        • Tex'ish says:

Wondering how many lbs Samia puts on over next 8 months… ?

        • Fear The Magic says:

In my mind I have it at Brown LT Alverez C Samia RT and one of the JC guys at one Guard spot and Ford at the other.
However it turns out it certainly seems that they will finally have some nice depth on the OLine

    • Jordan Esco says:

Kept hearing this was a possibility. So do they then flip Brown to RT?

      • KJ1123 says:

I actually think B is currently trying to get Dalmier to step up and Orlando will stay at LT.

      • Soonerfan24 says:

If Bobby Evans is ready, then I could definitely see this happening

        • KJ1123 says:

I hear he’s putting in some good work, but I don’t know if he will be an inside or outside guy. I think B wants prototypical tackles…6’6″ 6’7″…long, heavy, etc. And Bobby is built more like Samia. He maybe has longer arms but theyre similar in build.

          • Soonerfan24 says:

Good to know. I’m curious how Kyler Murray is going to see over our monster line haha

          • Tipman says:

He saw over greg little and bobby evans for 3 years and had a pretty solid career

          • Stephen Woods says:

            Good point

          • Tipman says:

It’s more about having great anticipation and throwing windows than “seeing over” someone. No QB in NFL history can see over Orlando Brown

          • Scott says:

Do you think Ben Powers will start at LG?

          • KJ1123 says:

I can see him at guard. His has a pretty strong base and good at the POA. Brown, Ashton, Alavarez, Powers and Samia….that’s not a bad looking line.

          • Scott says:

That Oline could compete against the best Dlines in the country. I want your take on Alavarez , are you sold that he can handle the Center position?

          • KJ1123 says:

I am. Could he be a little bigger? Yeah of course, but the kid has good technique, can finish blocks, and he battles. I do think he will need to still step up big if he’s going to be the full time guy. But I have more confidence in him at that position than anyone else from last year.

          • Scott says:

            Alright thanks KJ.

          • hemisooner says:

I think Powers is going to surprise some people bc of his wrestling background. Heavy hands.

        • Jordan Esco says:

          agreed

    • MrBigsby says:

Reps now? There’s no practice going on.

    • hemisooner says:

I think it’s a good idea for him to learn to play both positions.

  • Dusty D Anderson says:

Austin Kendall, Jackson and Kelly are the most obvious true freshmen that have a chance to see the field. However, with Geno Lewis being eligible to play, the freshman WR would have to be really impressive in order to see the field…in my opinion.

Overall, I’m pleased with the kids they brought in. For the most part, they all seem to want to be a Sooner, and I like that.

    • KJ1123 says:

I think Geno Lewis is REALLY going to show. It’s his last year, he will get alot of exposure, and he needs to make some noise if he is looking to get drafted. That’s some good motivation imo. My early prediction will be Lewis and Dede as main WR targets.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

I think nowadays.. Almost every kid you bring in will get an opportunity for PT, at the very least on special teams because you may not get 4yrs out of most of your roster. Might as well acclimate them to game speed as soon as possible..

  • Brien Brown says:

Jordan any chance y’all could do a write up about the class from 4 years ago like a thoughts at the time and then what they ended up being for us. Mean its fun to guess but in a 4 years time look back and be like this is how good they ended up being.

  • sooner8 says:

Nice summary of OU”s recruiting class Jordan,it’s hard to predict how these guys will shake out by just watching some film on them.We will know more once they hit campus for spring drills,Thanks again..Go Sooners!!!

  • j l says:

Dont have any knowledge about jones, but at only 6′, im assuming he is more of a burner?

  • Rick says:

Jordan, I agree with your assessments. Just a few observations to add. It’s obvious they went after speed with the LB’s. Watching highlight film is somewhat deceiving, but OMG some of the highlights of some of these guys show elite speed and versatility. I watched that spin move of Kelly’s over and over. JMT, and Jackson are swiss army knives and the two dudes from Scranton are instant (underraated) rotation guys. I thought the WR’s were the best overall group of new recruits. It will be interesting to see what the coaches meant about Roberson. They mentioned “changing his body type), I was assuming they intended a fat to muscle transformation in his upper body on good food and healthy dose of Schmitty. I understand he is very strong. Another group that impressed me were the DB’s, all were good, Sylvie really impressed me. Finally would comment on Kendall. I think he is better mechanically than I was expecting. Good read Jordan!

    • Jordan Esco says:

      all good points

      • Tipman says:

Good points except I don’t think we rotate LBs (although I could be wrong). I know we rotate the DLs but Shannon was our backup LB and he didn’t play unless someone was hurt or in for mop-up duty.

    • hOUligan says:

At reported 6’3 320, Roberson ‘looks’ pretty chunky out at LT but man, he carries and moves it well. It will be a big change from OUr past centers eating and trying to gain and hold weight at 290# to a guy that reportedly benches around 400 and squats 500 as a 17 yr old kid. Excited about how the Oline is evolving. Gotta keep bringing in the stallions to run behind these guys.

  • Phat Khong says:

In the vein of Maxs Tupai – how about 3* Sci Martin?

I saw that he was also delaying his signing for various reasons. As far as I know he would have been a possible take if he had wanted to come aboard before committing to TCU. I realize it is unlikely he signs with OU, but is this someone that the coaches would, at this point, make a renewed effort to bring aboard at this time? He is listed as a DE, not sure if we need additional bodies there or if that would ease some of the “we didn’t take a DL” issues.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Be interesting to see what LB’s play, and what our base formation is. I’ve been a fan of sticking with what worked this past year, but if they think a 4-3 makes more sense, cool. You gotta think Evans and Doucet are both playing, or given a shot, assuming health isn’t an issue for Evans. Outside of that, a lot of options for the outside. DeBerry. Jackson. Time to get some of that young DL/LB talent on the field.

    • Daryl says:

I would love to see us in a 4-2-5 like TCU Runs Let all those DL rotate and just create havoc and letting guys like Evans, Evans, Obo, and Kelly go crazy.

I also think that system would allow guys like Mark Jackson, DJ Ward, and Dimon really be a nightmare off the edge.

  • Jim Casy says:

Abdul Adams retweeted me earlier when i congratulated him. I love the types of kids we signed. It is going to be a good locker room.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Is Hulk still a LB or has he eaten himself into a DE yet?

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

I’ll be curious to see how many snaps Mark Jackson gets, I’m thinking just pass rush specialist on 3rd and long. Though he may be able to carve himself out a role and get 10-15 snaps a game.

    • Rick says:

Jackson did show versatility, yes he did rush really well, but he did show he was strong against the run as well. The coaches were talking during the FSOK show that Ward was really coming on strong as a true DE, but like you say Jackson could be in the rotation on the outside.

  • ellisbr says:

another quality read as usual, appreciate all you guys do and the information that flows through this site. does anyone know if the coaches are still in contact with Tupai? I know it’s a stretch but man, I want that kid in the crimson and cream!!

  • Phat Khong says:

247 has an article up showing the spring scholarship breakdown. According to them, we have 86 under scholarship at this point. I noticed they are still counting Cody Thomas – not sure if that just means his scholarship is good through the rest of the spring or if they missed taking him off.

Also shows we have 17 graduating this year – so with 10 players transferring/ leaving/ “no longer with team” it looks like the recruiters better jump on it to fill a class of 27!

    • Scott says:

Expect OU to possibly sign 28-30 guys , A few guys will leave early for the draft.

    • Rick says:

They have started very fast this year, and have flooded the market with 2017 offers.

    • JD says:

I counted 15 tops and Bob said yesterday it would be another small class. I can’t remember what he said but it was less than 15. He acted like they wouldn’t be signing a full class next year either but it all depends on attrition

  • SCKSChief says:

Is there a story with the preferred walk-on of the QB from TX? Sorry I don’t have a name. Saw the story on Twitter last night and can’t find it now. Was dubbed as Mayfield Pt 2 or Baker 2.0 or something. Hate to be so vague…

  • BoomCity89 says:

As a possible future post, it would be neat to see what recruiting battles OU won and lost the previous year… leading up to National Signing Day.

That way we can see how each year is different. 1 year OU may win a lot of the battles and the next we may lose a lot. Would be something interesting to see….

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I thought they were looking at Valentine as a guard?

  • Hillbilly Ray says:

again awesome job you guys, I for one am very excited to see how the linebacker position plays out! there is a load of potential there and enough guys to push each other… could be scary good!

  • Jeff says:

Is this supposed to be the big class after beating Bama?

  • Rick says:

Jordan, it appears to me the D is really loaded now. Looking at the O, it is also pretty loaded now. In your opinion, if you were calling the shots, what would be your area of emphasis to recruit to, for next class.

  • Golfluvr13 says:

Jordan, once again I want to thank you for all the work you put in for us fans! I love your write ups. It is well worth the price of admission (I jest, just can’t help myself).

    • hOUligan says:

Yeah. Good work, Jordo. And I get a kick out of the negative rants, too. I’m up for renewal on my subscription. The check is on the mail.

  • Doobie74OU says:

I agree that with the exception of Kelly, Kendall, Jackson, Bledsoe, and maybe one of the CBs push for playing time but most of the rest of the High School kids are looking at redshirt seasons this year. As for the Jucos you have to expect them to compete right away. Looking forward to Spring Ball!

  • soonersd says:

“So now that I’ve given you no point to keep reading, why don’t we get started.”

^^^this made me chuckle. Thanks for the right up. It’s nice to have a short summary and breakdown to read over after the chaos that ensued all day yesterday. Thanks, Jordan.

  • Will Narramore says:

Here is my best guess at starters for next year as of now with no spring practice with those who will receive time but may not start in parenthesis. Also wouldn’t be surprised if Bobby Evans steps up becomes starting LT, Orlando Brown to RT, Samia to RG, and Ford to LG
    QB: Mayfield (Kendall)

    RB: Samaje Perine (Mixon,Anderson, Brooks)

    LT: Orlando Brown

    LG: Ashton Julius

    C: Jonathan Alvarez

    RG: Cody Ford

    RT: Dru Samia

WR: Dede Westbrook (Jeff Mead,Dahu Green)

WR: Jarvis Baxter(Michiah Quick, Mykel Jones)

WR: Geno Lewis (AD Miller, Dallis Todd)

WR: Mark Andrews ( John Humphrey)

DE: Charles Walker( Matt Dimon, Austin Roberts)

DT: Matt Romar (Jordan Wade, Marquise Overton)

DE: Neville Gallimore( Duvonta Lampkin, DJ Ward, Gabriel Campbell)

    OLB: Caleb Kelly ( Obo)

    ILB: Tay Evans (Kapri Doucet)

ILB: Jordan Evans ( Curtis Bolton)

    OLB: Ricky DeBerry (Mark Jackson)

CB: Jordan Thomas ( Jordan Parker, Stanvon Taylor)

NB: William Johnson ( Antoine Stephens, Prentince Mckinney)

Safety: Steven Parker (Ahmad Thomas, Kahlil Haughton

    CB: PJ Mbanasor (Dakota Austin)

    • Tipman says:

Neville is 330 lbs and a 3-4 DT, I think. If we move to a 4-3 I think he could play either DT spot (the1 or 3 technique)

    • hOUligan says:

And when you look at the names and the depth, you can see w/ limited #s how it would have been nice for the staff to get 1 ‘select’ DT-type, but not a real ‘need’ at DT/DE. That is a stout looking group on paper. Now….gotta get it done for real on the field.

    • hemisooner says:

I think Obo (OLB) and Austin Roberts (Tapper’s replacement) start. Overton has a great chance to start to.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Wow. A Thomas was a starter and appeared to get better except in one on one coverage. But I would rather have Q in tbe middle and run a 4-3…

  • soonersd says:

*** edit… just saw Will Narramore’s 2 deep breakdown, THANKS!

Ya, I’m guilty of getting all excited about the new class we just recruited and sometimes forget about guys like (at LB) DeBerry and The Hulk who could very well be ready to push for starting jobs or a lot of PT this year.

Anybody, with good LB knowledge have some predictions on who will be our starting LB’s and who will see a lot of PT in back-up roles?

    • Gary Robbins says:

I am guilty of that also. But it’s kind of like Deberry and McGinnis saying whoa there Nellie, we’re not exactly chopped liver.

      • soonersd says:

Very, true. I’m sure Tay Evans, Bolton and Obo are thinking the same thing also. Any one of those guys we mentioned could put together a great offseason, have the light bulb come on, and BOOM… earn themselves a starting and becoming the next stud LB for us. I’m thankful, we have Jordan Evans around to help mold/lead the young guys.

  • Tim A says:

I wonder how OU compares to other top 20 type programs when it comes to percentage of freshman that are red-shirted. Clearly every class is different and depends on Seniors, underclassman leaving ‘early’ for NFL, et al, but as I was watching ESPN U’s draft coverage yesterday, it sure sounded like some other programs (namely I heard Urban Meyer of OSU and Les Miles of LSU) imply that they absolutely expect many (the majority) of their freshman to get playing time next (their freshmen) season. Again – perhaps because they are losing a ton to the NFL (I know Meyer mentioned this)…..but they also said “we didn’t recruit them to red-shirt them”….

  • Drew says:

Hey Jordan, might I make a suggestion for the offseason? I was thinking a weekly series of articles, where one of the Braniacs does a full eval for an incoming recruit: analyze film, talk about what they like and don’t like, and give some projections. With 20+ new guys, that’d be a lot of material for us to look forward to in what will probably be a long offseason. Anyway, thanks again for all you guys do here!

  • Tim A says:

I never see Will Sunderland mentioned for any playing time potential. I remember him last year being recruited by Ohio State before deciding to stay with us (OU) – and he was a 4-star recruit – is he still no where near ready to at least contribute something?

  • Daryl says:

JY we need you to weigh in on these OL recruits and maybe even the DL guys.
K ready for a true breakdown of the DB’s

BUT who has the LB knowledge? Could maybe Mr. Broyles get a Rufus Alexander or Curits Loftin to some kind of blind tape eval on these guys???

Mr. Broyles would you please give your thoughts on the WRs?!?!?!?!

  • hOUligan says:

If you haven’t watched film on Roberson, do yourself a favor and hit the SoonerSports site. Kid played LT and is amazingly quick off the ball plus some nasty. Very impressed and can see why the staff is looking to make him a center. Historically, Habern, Ikard and Darlington were smaller more athletic but very intelligent. Betting Roberson is a good student to go w/ reported big weight room numbers and 320#. Give him a couple of years. Would love to see a breakdown by group on the recruits by you guys: JY do an Oline piece and K do a piece on DBs and LBs etc.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Coach B went HUGE when recruiting o-line this year. They all are beasts!

    • Jake says:

Big, strong, smart, and STRONG guy at Center? You have my attention.

      • Rick says:

He is very strong, and he graduated early. I know that doesn’t mean he is a genius, but it does show some incentive to me. Plus, he’s an Okie kid. I always pull for okie kids.

    • hemisooner says:

No more small centers. That’s a thing of the past. Ty is a great sooner on and off the field but he was a little light and had trouble with bigger guys one on one. One thing that we will miss is his great leadership skills.

    • The OL' Ball Coach says:

FNA. This kid is a Mualer and plays with a chip on his shoulder. That’s why this staff doesnt give a rip about stars. Any slap can turn on his film and see that this kid can play. Silent assassin. By the second drive kids are letting him block him. I bet the opposing coach who coaches DE’s after being mauled by Robertson ask the DE “whats that smell”.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Jordan thanks for your time. Just read your take on the 2011 class down below. Spot on. It was back during your C&C days.

  • StL Sooner says:

All that big ugly talk down there got me fired up! Hope I don’t run someone off the road today, while I’m down here in Austin /~~

  • Cedarsooner says:

Why doesn’t anybody mention Courtney Garnett? He redshirted last year. He’s still on the roster.
Is he just not as highly thought of right now? Is there a reason?

  • Mizuno44 says:

Good insight, I think the natural way to think is most of the new guys will redshirt. However, the only caveat I’d add now are the influence of the new coaches, and the type of athletes we seem to be recruiting since the changes. Meaning, the kids in the last couple of classes seem to be really well rounded, quality young men. Not saying that wasn’t the case in years prior, but there seems to be more of an abundance as of late. Long way of saying that we could see some of these guys on the field contributing if they prove their value early.

  • Stephen Woods says:

    OP is up

  • Roger Nixon says:

Great write up as always. A great program doesn’t need immediate help from true freshmen. Obviously OU recruited to it’s needs at LG, OL and WR and that is where there will be the most opportunity for the incoming class.
I am more interested in seeing last year’s class take the field and seeing how this class pans out in 2017.
For all the love UT got for their recruiting class, they did not get a lot of help on the offensive side where they need it the most.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

Very nice analysis, Jordan! And particularly noble given how much time you spend helping us yesterday! Thanks for all the hard (and sacrificial) work!

  • Super Keith says:

All in all, a solid assessment Jordan. The only point I’ll make is that I wasn’t sold on Terry when we signed him. Then, I spent an afternoon watching tape, and it changed my mind immediately. I don’t know if he’ll end up being a great player, but it was pretty clear to me (after reviewing film) 1) what the OU staff saw in him, and 2) how badly the recruiting services missed on him. You don’t see a kid that size, that athletic, every day.

    • Daryl says:

I don’t know that they missed as much as he didn’t play the recruiting game. He picked OU and was done. Wouldn’t even talk to coaches. At that point recruiting service can’t sell clicks. Maybe I’m wrong but that is why I think he got “overlooked”. Even so he was selected to we Semper Fi game so somebody saw his talent.

      • The OL' Ball Coach says:

“DING DING DING DING “. “he didnt play the recruiting game”. Exactly. Thus the high praise from his coaches. He’s a no film kid. All I needed to do is stand next to him at the regional track meet. Half the D1 coaches in America offers on the eye test w/o turning the film on. You see him run a sprint relay split in a singlet and the offers come”.

    • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Ya think? If he visits all the SEC teams that called Coach Smith everyday or even took a phone call from Bama and visited, got an offer. He’s a 4 star. that why the star system is stupid. Bama could offer a kid that these so called experts give stars had never heard of and that kid immediately is a 4 star. This staff doesnt give a rip about stars. Case in point Baker Mayfield. Look up his stars coming out of High School.

  • JY says:

    Hey Jordan,
    Hope all is well buddy…
this is how I see the OL Playing out.

Valentin is a guard in my opinion. You have some good depth in there with Cody Ford being a stud recruit last year, and winning the offensive scout team player of the year. Still I think that Valentin is due for a redshirt. Unless he just comes in and is a grown ass man, it’ll be hard to beat out those older guys with a year or two in the system. Also you’ve got Joseph Paul who was a beast coming out of HS and redshirted. Also Alex Dalton was in line to play too but tore his ACL in bowl prep.

Julious could play a number of positions. He’s athletic enough to go at right tackle, but with his size and feet I could see him going inside and being a duke robinson type. You have to get him on the field and get him some reps. God forbid something happened to one of your starters at Tackle, Brown or Samia, someone has to step in…which brings me to Swenson…

Eric Swenson is a guy who if forced into the role could have early success like Dru Samia, who had the most 225 reps out of any lineman on the team this year. Eric is a big kid who plays fundamentally sound, and has good feet. You also have Bobby Evans who’s coming off of a redshirt and ACL injury so I’m sure he’ll be in the mix somewhere. Still I think that Swenson if you can is a redshirt guy. That’ll have him as a 3rd year sophomore when it’s time to come in and start and Brown and Samia talk about leaving.

I think the most unsung guy in this class is Bennett Powers. He’s a beast inside. With Alvarez taking over the center spot, if Powers and/or Cody Ford/Julious can shore up that inside, I think with the tackles and Alvarez getting a year better, and with Powers/Ford or Julious being more physical inside, I think the o line is better overall.

Finally, don’t be shocked if Logan, the kid from Harrah comes in and surprises some people. He’s the classic mauler with great size and will definitely work hard. Definitely a redshirt but after a couple of years will likely challenge for time.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Great to hear from you JY! Tell the boss you need some time off to focus on the important things like the little one and OU Football, oh and of course Mrs. JY! Thanks for your thoughts!

      • JY says:

Would love to! haha. Got ta pay those bills tho! good to hear from you too!

THANKS! JY you always come with great OL info. Even if I watch each kid’s film, the competition is hard for me to compare. I am learning from your posts and enjoy the line play much more since being exposed to your educational work.

      • JY says:

What it may come down to for Bedenbaugh is just finding his best 5 and putting them on the field. You have to believe that Brown, Alvarez and Samia are in that group. It’s a good problem to have when he has several who can fill a need.

      • hOUligan says:

Never played the position but had friends that were Oline and taught me a little. Still don’t have the eye for most of it. Loved the ‘Trench Warfare’ pieces and learned a lot. Watching Powers, quick on pulling and he never stops, drives his guy out of the frame and into the dirt. Julius less aggressive.

    • Stephen Woods says:

      Thanks JY!

    • Sooner Ray says:

We appear to be hard loaded here JY. Can’t wait to see this next group gel.

    • hOUligan says:

Ask and you shall receive. Just got home from the gym and find an Oline breakdown from my fav Brainiac. I know this is a labor of love for all of you guys but ‘thanks’ for taking the time and putting in the work.

    • jonnyBgood says:

Solid bidness right there. It’s nice hearing about some of the guys that get lost in the shuffle during the season and getting reacquainted with them. Coach B has a great group of talented young men and I too believe the line should be improved this year. Great write up as always JY.

    • The OL' Ball Coach says:

The kid from Harrah tries to physically hurt kids every down. 2 star my a$$. He’s a freaking MAULER. That is what I like about this staff. Stars don’t mean crap. You think the pip squeak from SS can eval talent better then Coach B?

  • Stephen says:

Hinted this on my blog but I projected who would see playing time early.

    Offense:
Ben Powers, I have him as a lock. He’s a beast.
Ashton Julious, not sure if he starts but I think he’ll likely see the field first barring any injuries.

Surprise true-freshman would be Zach Farrar.

    Defense:
    Kapri Doucet, lock.
    Beal, rotational.
    Caleb Kelly, rotational.

    Surprise true-freshman Jordan Parker

    Special teams:
    Parnell Motley
    Chanse Slyvie

    • Sooner Ray says:

Is there a link to your blog?

      • Stephen says:

Sorry busy day or I would have replied sooner. (No pun intended)
I’d rather get permission before I link my site on someone else’s, been here for awhile and don’t want to to step on toes.

    • bmrsnr says:

When are Doucet and Beal expected in?

      • Stephen says:

Assuming they’ll report during the summer like the freshman. Not sure what the exact date is odd the top of my head but I’m guessing mid July.

  • The OL' Ball Coach says:

I was one of the original ones who visited and posted here many times (under different name). Back in the days me, when it was East Tex, Ray and a few others. I quit reading as much because of Jordo’s continued expertise and hindsight offered here towards the coaches and even the men’s BB when Lon was struggling to win a tourny game. I did read this piece. Being an OK coach I take exception to Jordo’s comments about Victory’s John- Micheal Terry. “Brody Eldridge man crush”, “Didn’t do this kid any favors in the over hyping dept.” “overhyping” What do you base your opinion on? Have you personally seen him play football? Basketball? Take the baton as the anchor on VC’s sprint relay?

    • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Very typical dig at Coach Stoops whom I’m sure you address as Bob. “Brody Eldrige man crush” Coach talked up Brody because he worked his a$$ off, Blocked his a$$ off, Never bitched about not getting the ball. Consummate Team Player. Obviously you have never been through a 15 week meat grinder in 110 degree temps, 4 hour piss cutter practices. Because if you had you would understand Coach Stoops appreciation of what Brody brought to the table.

      • Sooner Ray says:

Coach Stoops was on the radio today comparing JMT’s motor to Brody.

        • The OL' Ball Coach says:

If I’m in a foxhole or a street fight I want guys like Brody with me. That’s all Coach Stoops is saying. Listen to Coach Mike talk about JMT. I’m seen enough of him to know the praise is worthy. I understand , Jordo can’t help himself. I used to follow him on twitter. Talk about hindsight is 20/20. It’s easy to criticize after the fact.

        • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Ray it’s my fault. I knew not to read this one. Look there was a 100 decommits in less then a week before signing day . You got a kid JMT who commits and tells his head coach not to allow coaches from other schools to come to VC. JMT wouldn’t take a phone call from Nick Saban. I know his head coach well. R. SMITH told me every SEC team called on JMT. JMT wouldn’t take the calls, no visits. How can you not brag about a kid like that. Varsity Ron the head coach told Nick Saban that JMT wouldn’t take the Saban call because he was Committef. How many kids would do that?

          • Sooner Ray says:

Bob knows exactly what kind of kid he is getting and I know he appreciates JMT’s solid commitment. The only bad thing about it is the “experts” would have jumped his star rating if they had known how sought after he really was. He may end up being the steal of the class.

          • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Exactly. That’s why the star ratings are not valid. If he takes the Bama visit and Bama offers JMT goes to a 4 stat immediately. That is why this kid is special. JMT didn’t give a rip about stars, fancy uniforms , social media etc. . He has stud parents. When he committed it was over. I think the bragging “hype” was a lot about how he handled the whole process.

    • j l says:

Certainly welcome to your opinion, but i didnt take that as a dig on anyone. Hes simply acknowledging bob’s very high praise of JMT.

I think most of us around here expect JMT to be a stud, but bob had some very lofty praise for him, thats a lot of pressure.

Do you coach over at VC? my nephew played Qb/CB there a while back.

      • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Coached against him. He’s a man amount Boyd athletic and s better kid. He’s a grown man.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I’ve heard about that sprint relay, would love to see it.

      • The OL' Ball Coach says:

He’s a grown man Ray. Carries himself like a grown man too. He’s been raised well.

      • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Hey and certain people bitch about Stoops attitude with media. You tube SEARCH Nick Saban press conferences. It pure entertainment . Let’s not forget The Stoops brothers background. Youngstown kids, dad was a coach. Watch Coach Mike’ s film, Coach Stoops film. We aren’t talking about premadonnas here.

        • The OL' Ball Coach says:

Last post and im off my soap box not that anyone cares. You Tube a Saban interview, A Bill Synder interview. We are talking about guys who know more ball then all of us combined. You wont hear Saban address as “Nick” or Snyder as “Bill”. It’s coach. Actually Coach Stoops handles the media better then most. And we have a guy on here chastising “Stoops Man crush on Brody”. weak

          • Robert Boone says:

I don’t take it at all that Jordan was chastising Stoops. He also stated “all kidding aside”. In my opinion it was a great post. Opinions are always welcome here.

  • jonnyBgood says:

Just watched the Chanse Sylvie interview from yesterday with TR and I loved the kid! “Yessir.” “Yessir.” Hahaha! Kid can flat out play and is 100% in on being a Sooner. Looking forward to watching Chanse grow in the system and become the next Steven Parker. Boomer!
