Open Post | Weekend, Jan. 9th – 11th (UPDATE Sat., 5:56 pm)

Darreyl Patterson: As most of you know by now, 2015 Lawton CB Darreyl Patterson received his OU offer last week. We caught up with Patterson earlier this week, and he said that he’ll be in Norman the weekend after the dead period is over (Jan. 15th). He also said he still plans on taking his visit to Kansas State the following weekend (Jan 23rd-25th). We expect a decision to come after the Kansas State visit, at the latest.

OU currently has four 2015 DBs committed: Will Johnson, PJ Mbanasor, Kahlil Haughton & Will Sunderland. And they have numerous targets still available they’re in good shape with: Darreyl Patterson, Nate Dalton, Antoine Stephens, Kareem Orr & Justin Reid. It’s definitely feeling like it’s going to start becoming a first come, first serve sort of situation.

Antoine Stephens: Stephens absolutely blew up this past week. The 6’2″ 192 lb cornerback out of Dallas had zero offers just one week ago. Now, however, he holds offers from OU, Baylor, SMU, Louisville, Washington State & Texas Tech. He’s also receiving heavy interest from Auburn, Texas, TAMU & Miss. State.

We know many of you are probably wondering how this happened, so we’ll explain. Stephens played primarily wide receiver during his junior year. This past year was his first at the cornerback position, and he excelled at it. With his size and speed, a number of schools, including Oklahoma, began to take notice. The only problem was Antoine hadn’t taken his ACT/SAT. He took the test in December and received a very good score that ensured he would qualify. So many of the schools that were watching his progress offered shortly after his score came back.

We’ve chatted with Antoine and his coach throughout the week, and it sounds like Stephens is looking to stay close to home (OU, Baylor, Texas Tech, SMU and Texas or Texas A&M if they offer). Things are looking good for the Sooners right now. He has scheduled a trip to Oklahoma for next weekend. Also, we are told that Bob Stoops, Jerry Montgomery, Jay Boulware, and Bobby Jack Wright will do an in-home visit with Antoine next Thursday (which is the day the dead period ends). The OU staff clearly is very high on Stephens.

When he was offered, a number of coaches, including Stoops, passed the phone around and Stephen’s coach told us, “that made a big impression on Antoine and a big impression on his mother. And this decision is definitely going to involve his mother…for coach (Bob) Stoops to speak to him, that meant a lot.”

Finishing off the 2015 D-line Class: With Gabriel Campbell committing earlier this week, OU now has four defensive line commits. As we’ve mentioned before, Nebraska defensive end commit Daishon Neal is also expect to be in Norman next weekend. We aren’t sure how many more defensive linemen OU will have room for, but we do know that Montgomery isn’t done. Talking to folks in Dallas and OU still seems to be recruiting Darrion Daniels, who has a visit scheduled to Iowa later this month. We are told to expect his decision to come down to OU and Ok. State.

Additionally, OU still has a shot at flipping Texas DL commit and former OU commit, Du’Vonta Lampkin. Obviously with four defensive linemen in this class OU could be done and be perfectly fine, but it’s also possible Monty could still nap one or two more.

Next Weekend Visitors: We will get a list going on TOP and we’ll continue to update it, but our preliminary list of visitors for next weekend includes: Daishon Neal, Van Jefferson, Josh Smith, Darreyl Patterson, Antoine Stephens, Dominique Reed & Austin Seibert.

– UPDATE (Fri., 10:26 am): This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone here considering what we’ve shared with you regarding 2015 S Justin Reid’s recruitment, but he did officially release a Top 4 via his Twitter account.

reid

– UPDATE (Sat., 4:55 pm): Sooners have apparently offered 2016 RB Devwah Whaley

– UPDATE (Sat., 5:56 pm): The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that former OU assistant, Jay Norvell, has emerged as the leading candidate for the wide receivers coach position at Wisconsin.

    Alright

  • Bob Edwards says:

Interesting that the CB coach wasn’t on a four coach recruiting call to a CB recruit.

    • ellisbr says:

two names we aren’t hearing anything about right now, Kish and M Stoops. I just can’t see them being a part of this team next year.

    • soonerthunder says:

Yes, but it was also interesting that he (CB coach Wright) was mentioned going with Stoops, Monty, Boulware to see Stephens. Makes me think what I keep hearing about him moving to another position outside coaching but within the department might be true. Obviously, they can use him to recruit if they want to until/if he moves. But not seeing Kish/MS names is interesting.

  • Richard Gray says:

The commit pj just said recruiting just got interesting lol whatever that means lol

  • STL Sooner says:

    no LB updates?

  • Birddawg says:

If monty continues to recruit talent into the d-line awhile having kish handicapping the numbers for LB.
Should consider moving back into a 4 man front to get the most out of the depth created by monty.

  • bjwalker82 says:

PJ says “I’m just talking about the Kenny Hill move… Geez lol. My phone went from 0 to 100. Breathe.”

  • bjwalker82 says:

Also what are the basic rules of the dead period? I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that you weren’t allowed to have any contact with a recruit during that time.

    • Bob Edwards says:

As I understand it, you are not allowed to initiate any contact with a recruit. If the recruit calls you, you can talk to them.

      • bjwalker82 says:

So then all of the recruits Monty was speaking with last night called him? One after the other?

        • Bob Edwards says:

Don’t know. I also know that different “dead periods” have different restrictions. As RBear said above, maybe they just aren’t allowed face to face’s during this one.

    • RBear says:

No face-to-face contact allowed- phone calls, texts and emails are allowed.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Monty still doin work! Got a good list coming in at the end of the dead period! If we get the OC figured out we should wrap this recruiting class in style!

  • F1at1ined says:

The silence is deafening in terms of Kish and Mike Stoops. They arent recruiting anyone it seems. Even if Mike remains on staff with the same title, one gets the feeling there’s a major change in responsibilities.

    • RBear says:

“Also, we are told that Bob Stoops, Jerry Montgomery, Jay Boulware, and
Bobby Jack Wright will do an in-home visit with Antoine next Thursday
(which is the day the dead period ends).”

Key figure(s) being absent here speaks volumes to me.

    • James D-Space says:

Thinking the same thing. Mike even recruit anyone that has given us verbal in this class?
He may not be gone, but sure doesn’t appear to be here!

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

If PJ flips back to TCU, I will personally fight Gary Patterson.

  • OklaSooner says:

Does anyone believe Mike would’ve interviewed for the LSU job if he was returning?

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

It’s not unheard of to interview for another position with another company, even though your current job is safe, to see what other opportunities are in the market place.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Yes, I do.

    • nisakat2 says:

that was all for show . just trying to show donors and fans that he is valued by elite programs

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Not really, but I suppose Bob told him to look, Mike can’t find ANYTHING, and he stays. I think that is a long shot though. He isn’t interacting with recruits, in my eyes, he is pretty much gone.

    • curt gomer says:

I think that was the youngstown boys working together to show everyone how lucky OU was to have MS. IMO

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It’s good news that a OC has not been named yet. Is this pointing toward a Frost interview at least?

  • ruasoonerfan2 says:

  • soonerjunky says:

PJ Mbanasor tweeted that recruiting just got interesting. Any word on coaching changes?

    • Jordan Esco says:

It meant nothing. He was just referring to Kenny Hill transferring. Everyone freaked out for nothing.

      • SamSooner says:

At least PJ knows we covet him. It’s all good. It’s all good.

      • Doobie74OU says:

WHAT! You got to be kidding Jordan! Fans freaking out for no reason, I am not sure I understand this concept! LOL!

      • OkieRandolph says:

If Hill transfers to TCU this semester, does he have to sit out 2015? I know that Boykin is there but would he be available if needed? 4 months ago there was after the 1st game, talk that Hill would be the next Heisman contender at aTm. Guess that candle blew out pretty quick. Is he that afraid of Murray and the kids not even on campus yet???? AND, what if we catch a big break and turn Murray northbound on I-35!!

        • Jordan Esco says:

“If Hill transfers to TCU this semester, does he have to sit out 2015?” – Yes.

  • jmac45 says:

  • bmrsnr says:

Is Patterson an ath offer? He looks comparable to Newsome.

  • trusoonerA53 says:

Hey brainiacs question? No word on SMITTY conditioning coach. I barely remember something about Monty and Smitty getting heated, because Monty wanted more.strength conditioning and Smitty condition refused to change so some of his training is being questioned with how people are getting hurt during training?

  • Matt says:

Jordan/SuperK/AnyBrainiac, who are some redshirt freshmen we should be eager to hear about in the spring and next year? I typically don’t pay much attention to recruiting so I don’t know what big names redshirted. Also, have you heard of anyone looking good in winter workouts?

    • blaster1371 says:

      I second this inquiry!

    • thebigdroot says:

Well considering we heard all sunshine and rainbows last winter only to have it blow up in our face, I don’t know if I really want to know.

    • Peabody Thekat says:

Good Luck. Apparently that info is Top Secret.

    • Stephen says:

Joe Mixon, Orlando Brown, Kenyon Frison, Mark Andrews, Dallis Todd.

      • F1at1ined says:

I wouldnt be surprised if Joseph Paul and Carson Meier also make an impact. Also, Tito Windham and Marcus Green could surprise at CB (though Green may be learning to play as a safety). Oh..and LB Curtis Bolton and DL Dwayne Orso.

        • Stephen says:

I left out TE because I don’t know what we are going to run next year but yes, Meier could have an impact. I think LB spots are taken, IMO and Orso certainly could take over Chuka’s spot.

          • Starfish Prime says:

I like what I see/hear about Orso as well, Stephen. But honestly, with all the changes, you’d have to think that the dynamic will be very similar to circa 1999 (not a Prince reference!) on BOTH sides of the ball. That means that, like with any true open competition, there will be ample opportunity for underclassmen to make an impact & earn some PT. Especially, for the guys coming in at mid-term this month.

        • Steve Johns says:

Bolton will be a big-time player, kid can play run & pass plus he hits like a freight train!

      • ALar03 says:

I heard somewhere they were movin Andrews to TE.. not real sure but if so I think he will be a better option than Meier…

  • RBear says:

FYI: Justin Reid related Twitter link above = bad

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

Would Josh Smith and Van Jefferson be a package deal (since they’re friends)? Because if by some miracle we could sign both of them…that would be swell

Also those DB’s we’re still recruiting give me optimism. All look like great prospects. I’ll say out of those, Stephens, Reid, and Patterson commit

  • dallassooner says:

Silly question. To me the GLOWING weakness on this teams is corner back. Who are TRUE CB’s and who are safeties? I’m under the impression Haughton and Sunderland are safeties. Seems we need a couple more CB’s in the fold.

  • DT says:

Not sure if this has been posted already but there is speculation that Helton may have met with OU already. Thoughts? http://m.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/ousportsextra/analysis-a-look-at-pluses-minuses-for-ou-s-next/article_c94bb6c8-5cf2-5cf2-9814-ae67a8682e9b.html?mode=jqm

I hope it is that way. FROST FOR OC

        Holding pattern .

That’s okay me, maybe everyone’s at lunch.

        • OkieRandolph says:

Not sure Op, but I think Goober and Gomer are changing the oil in the patrol car and Andy went down to make sure Barney and Thelma Lou weren’t dirtying up the sheets in Otis’s cell for Friday night!

          • OkieRandolph says:

Really Miz, I’m like you. Sorta like J G Wentworth ads. “I want an OC, and I want him NOW”!!!!! (but if it’s Frost, I can wait til Tues)

        • MoJoOkie says:

That could be the case, or it could be any of a number of things. Hope my answer helps a lot. For some reason the mojo keeps whispering Riley/Cumbie combo in my ear.

          • Easton says:

Oh man, the mojo keeps whispering in your ear. Lovely. My imaginations are diverse. This is the first time I have seen these two names together, and although I like the combo, I also wish the mojo would tell us whether that chemistry, Cumbie/Riley, has been actually tested, tried, even for a lunch outing.

          • MoJoOkie says:

I understand that Meachum/Cumbie has had a great success in a short period of time, but IMO, Riley could call plays (and his offense has a little different twist from Meachum’s) and Cumbie could develop the QB’s. I also think Riley is more of his own OC than Frost and he uses enough of a balanced attack to force D’s to scheme differently than they would for the Big XII spreads. Finally, I like the idea of two quality people involved in the offense because if attrition takes one of them, the other can step in. Similar to TCU’s situation now. If they lose Cumbie, they still have Meachum and vice verca. But then I could be mentally imbalanced too.

          • Easton says:

Good thinking. I like Riley’s scheme as well. It is not a copy of the Leach system. I think Riley disguises his attack much better, and I think that his part of why he has success, his set up can look one way, but it can be another after the ball is snapped. I like Cumbie as a play caller though, and I like the feel of giving two guys the job, with emphasis on position groups for each. Then, the offensive scheme truly becomes ‘multiple’ because two guys are sharpening the same sword, challenging each other, and having the others back. A defense can plan for a Riley offense, but it is harder to defend an offense that has two minds behind it, rather than one.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Seems like we been in a holding pattern for about 4-5 years but that is just my opinion. LOL!

      • Waters says:

If you want Frost, you must wait until Tuesday.

        • ruasoonerfan2 says:

No problem, we can wait. Remember Patience

          • Mizuno44 says:

I can wait, this below zero degree weather sets the stage as well, maybe we can get Nantz involved to connect all the angles, “It was a hire for the ages…”

          • Waters says:

Leach was a hire for ” the ages”
A lot of anologies with differences between Leach and Frost.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_zkHuoVenI5:disqus

What the Wishbone did to the Big 8 so did the spread do to the Big 12. But whereas no one was ever able to run the triple-option like Switzer’s teams, OU has fallen far behind it’s contemporaries in running the offense that they introduced into their own conference.

        • ND52 says:

It’s a quick drive down I-35 for the interview too.

        • SCKSChief says:

If I knew it WAS Frost, I’d wait til February.

  • curt gomer says:

I really liked that it seems when Gallimore visited Ohio st that same weekend JM went to Canada and meet with his parents…..Thats Slick!!!

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Forget hiring a new OC as “coach in waiting”. If I’m gonna designate a “coach in waiting” it’s going to be JM. Right now he is the only one really breathing new life into this program.

    • DCinAZ says:

Not true. So are Bedenbaugh, Boulware, and Viney.

      • leatherneck1061 says:

Not in the same league. One coach is producing results far beyond the others, and that is Montgomery. That much is plainly obvious.

        • Zack says:

I think bedenbaugh is in the same class as monty. He just doesn’t recruit any glorified positions. But bedenbaugh has a serious class right now and it could/should get better with the next commit.

        • ruasoonerfan2 says:

Not disagreeing but Gundy has a pretty good stable of RB’s

          • SCKSChief says:

They aren’t necessarily his recruits either

          • boomersooner says:

            Wait what?

          • Zack says:

He’s recruiting linebackers and he’s the line coach. So he’s saying it’s more impressive.

          • ruasoonerfan2 says:

Understand and agree, but Gundy is not a problem. I think he has done a great job.

          • boomersooner says:

He’s talking about the rb coach not recruiting awesome rb’s. I highly doubt that’s the case

          • Zack says:

Oh now i see sometimes it looks like people are replying to someone else’s comment.

          • SCKSChief says:

Not at all what I’m saying.

          • ruasoonerfan2 says:

            who’s recruits

          • SCKSChief says:

Just because Gundy has good RBs, it doesn’t mean he, personally, recruited them to Oklahoma.

          • ruasoonerfan2 says:

I do not know who actually recruited the RB’s, just figured it was Gundy

          • SCKSChief says:

I gotcha. Just trying to shed a little light. I personally like Gundy and feel he is a great asset. A great corps of players doesn’t necessarily a great recruiter make.

          • ruasoonerfan2 says:

            True

          • Jdizzle says:

If you go back and listen to Mixon committing to OU, you will recognize the name of a rather well-liked RB coach for the University of Oklahoma. That says all you need to know about Gundy’s recruiting ability.

          • SCKSChief says:

            Never questioned it.

          • boomersooner says:

“They aren’t necessarily his recruits either”
“Just because Gundy has good RBs, it doesn’t mean he, personally, recruited them to Oklahoma.”
“A great corps of players doesn’t necessarily a great recruiter make.”

i must not be an understander of the language if that’s not questioning it

          • SCKSChief says:

I don’t know why people are acting like I just slapped their mother.

I like Cale Gundy. I think he’s a great coach. I think he’s a dynamite recruiter. I know all his former players LOVE him.

The only statement that I was making was that we cannot assume that every RB is a Gundy recruit. That’s ALL I’m saying. Using the same logic as Montgomery recruiting outside his position area. Some coaching staffs break the country into recruiting areas, thus not necessarily recruiting ONLY their position. Gundy may actually recruit WRs, QBs, and even Kickers. But to assume that because they are a RB on the OU roster that they were recruited by Gundy is not necessariy true. THAT IS ALL I was trying to convey.

Can we please stop acting like I was insulting people or ranting completely non-sensical ravings?

          • boomersooner says:

Maybe. Haha. Sorry it was just even your clarifications seemed to back your statement. Moving on. Thank you for the clarification

          • boomersooner says:

Exactly. Some guy on the internet saying the rb coach might have nothing to do with recruiting rb’s and a stable of backs does not a good recruiter make leads me to believe that person is off his meds

          • Zack says:

            Yeah

          • Clint Lenard says:

AD and Murray have only spoken about 3 coaches during their time in the NFL. Gundy, Schmitty and Stoops. Gundy was the lead recruiter for every RB that has had success in college and the NFL.

Before you assume he didn’t, here’s something you should read.

            http://newsok.com/oklahoma-running-backs-coach-cale-gundy-talks-recruiting-and-summer-workouts-with-joe-mixon-and-samaje-perine/article/4949512

          • DCinAZ says:

Yup. Possibly NASTY stable of RB’s. I think Gundy has built a self recruiting machine at the RB position and AD and Murray’s NFL success certainly speaks for itself.

        • Doobie74OU says:

Got to say Gundy is doing a fine job with all the RB talent we have at OU and Bedenbaugh has a awesome line recruited for this year and at this time is turning down Barnett who began the year as the #1 guard in the nation. Monty is doing work and he is more vocal about but there are a couple other guys hustling as well!

        • DCinAZ says:

Bedenbaugh is already working on his 2016 class and has a 4* in the bag already, combined with the way he finished last year along with this year’s class I think puts him on the exact same level as Monty IMO.

        • MoJoOkie says:

I can remember a short time ago that Norvell was considered a recruiting wizard. That’s why I take much of this with a grain of salt. I’m holding out for results on the field, and then when Bob retires we can speculate on a front runner for the job. At OU, careers can ebb and flow quickly. And just to be up front, I agreed the Norvell and Heupel needed to go; along with Mike and Kish.

      • RBear says:

        Gundy

        • Booooom says:

Gundy is a monster. 4-star Alex Ross, 4-star Keith Ford, 4-star Samaje Perine, 5-star Joe Mixon, and 4-star Rodney Anderson. No offense to Monty, but Gundy is the best recruiter on our team if not in the nation.

          • ruasoonerfan2 says:

Truly amazing job recruiting, just hope we can keep all RB’s happy. I do not see how you can get enough carries for all. If Gundy can keep this group together he will be a magician.

          • James D-Space says:

Boom Gundy just recruiting RB’s. Appears Monty recruiting every dang position on the team.
            Just saying…..

      • SoonerfanTU says:

If Viney coached the DB’s like he supposedly did, color me unimpressed.

    • Fear the Magic says:

Monty is an AMAZING DL coach/ Recruiter. We have no idea how good of a head coach he’d make. Personally I’d hold off at least to see how he does at DC before designating him the next Head coach in waiting.

      • JD says:

I’m gonna hold off on the AMAZING DL coach for now…haven’t really seen him be above and beyond others in that department…recruiting..ABSOLUTELY…coach…yet to be determined…Phillips and Tapper didn’t seem to have the year I was expecting from either of them

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Ok let me restate. I agree with everyone that Gundy, Bedenbaugh, etc. are doing great jobs. I should have considered before making the above statement. Let me rephrase and just say IMO Monty is the clear frontrunner. He seems like the one who is the most motivated of the group – looks like he is recruiting all over the field.

      • Zack says:

I don’t disagree with you especially if the story about monty telling schmitty we need better conditioning is true. Monty is tireless

      • Doobie74OU says:

I can get behind this statement 1000%! He is out there on Twitter too which makes him way more visible!

        • DCinAZ says:

Exactly. Bedenbaugh just isn’t a publicly swaggy as Monty. He’s an former Olinemen recruiting Olinemen. They’re not typically swaggy players. They’re lunch pail guys who quietly go about their work.

      • RBear says:

Interesting but hypothetical anyway- don’t think any such designation should ever have existed in the first place.

    • Easton says:

But yes, I had a similar thought, Jerry Montgomery wants to build something, and his OU-ness is really powerful right now. Right now, he is acting like he wants the job eventually.

    • boomersooner says:

I too hope Monty is our next head coach down the road somewhere. I think defensive guys make better head coaches

  • Waters says:

Mack Brown destroyed the concept ” Coach in waiting”

  • soonerborn says:

Is there a reason why OU isn’t recruiting Kevin Dillman? I just watched his film and he looks very good. He has great size, looks fast and has a strong arm.

    • ALar03 says:

rivals says they are/were… heuple was recruiting him

    • OkieRandolph says:

Isn’t he just about the same player type as Dalton Wood? I think Dalton is quite a bit bigger, and the quickness is close.

    • Zack says:

I’m surprised too but he’s no longer a qb. He moved to tight end and said recently he’s up to 235 so I think he would be a good guy to get since we lose bell and macnamara is transferring.

      • JD says:

I think Meier might be a reason to be optimistic…he is more in line block you and can catch and make plays (traditional te)…then you have Andrews that will prob be more like Bell (only better utilized)..both will be rfreshes…bring Woods in and maybe grab one a year or so….although really a lot will depend on what type of OC we bring in …we might move away from the H back types…I can’t wait to see

        • Zack says:

I don’t understand moving away from h back types. They can be the biggest mismatch if used in a variety of ways. Flowers didn’t get the ball enough IMO and we always said that about Millard.

          • JD says:

I agreee…just saying until we see what type of O we are bringing in it is hard to tell

          • Boom says:

Goes back to JH’s philosophy that only WR’s can catch the ball.

          • Zack says:

Except for shepherd this year, that was proven to be a myth.

          • Boom says:

            isn’t Shepherd a WR?

          • Zack says:

I’m saying outside of shep, the receivers were below average. Dropped passes and couldn’t get open.

          • Boom says:

Did we play with other WR’s this year? Honestly, they did well blocking but there is some talent gap issues that have to be resolved. Maybe coaching, I don’t know but I’m sure whoever takes over brings some changes and opens the offense.

      • soonerborn says:

I usually use 24/7 for my info. They still have him listed as a DT QB. I was unaware of him making the move to TE. I haven’t seen film on Dalton Wood. Even at TE I would like to have Dillman.

        • Boom says:

I feel Dalton will be better as I’ve followed his career for three years. He is the most under the radar recruit on the commit list. Guy can move for 260lbs and he’s still growing at 6’4. He won’t be 18 till summer.

        • Zack says:

I think he would be a good guy to have. He’s gotta be friends with dallis todd. I just don’t understand why we’re not going after another te but since it’s a position we ignore then I guess we shouldn’t overload the position.

  • Waters says:

JM is the new new cosch at OU. Much needed. Great recruiter and line coach. I am waiting for the next new new coach to get us amazed.

    • Katyboomer says:

Man was hoping we would be able to flip him when he came for his OV. Now that he has put us on the back burner, sorta speak, I guess our chances drop.

      • Mizuno44 says:

That’s sure what it looked like before this change of schedule. Maybe JM can work some magic and change his mind.

        • Katyboomer says:

I guess when TFB puts the list on TOP they wont have to put his name on for the 16th now

          • Mizuno44 says:

His original plan was to visit us on the 16th, then Vandy as a final visit on the 31st. Maybe he’ll reschedule and give us “last look”, then commits. Fingers crossed.

          • Katyboomer says:

or shut it back down after all the guys at vandy get him excited about playing on the same team. I think it will be tough to get him if he goes to Vandy that weekend.

          • Mizuno44 says:

I hear you, lots of time between now and signing day, I guess we can only hope. Such a dramatic turn of events however, wonder what really caused this to happen so suddenly. I mean, Vanderbilt, and I don’t mean to offend them or any alum.

          • Kody K. says:

Your definitely correct, and Coach Mason is counting on that too. Obviously, a good strategy for Vandy.

    • Kyle Roach says:

damn.. i guess that means Van as well.. hmmm

      • Mizuno44 says:

Well I hope not. You know all too well the negative spin they’re putting in these kid’s heads right now. Not fair the nature of things I guess.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Vandy just c**k blocked us big time.
Thats too bad. I hope we still have a chance. Josh Smith was #1 on my want list.

      • Mizuno44 says:

I hear that, still can’t catch my breath! Turns out, Vandy runs a 3-4 scheme as well, and their head coach is taking over the defense in 2015. Plus, they’re bringing in a former NFL player to coach the D-Backs. All of this probably shows JS a focus on defense, and we’re still trying to solidify our offensive leadership.
        http://vanderbilt.247sports.com/Bolt/Coach-Mason-Running-the-Show-on-Defense-34482183

        • JB says:

Makes sense…our defense was terrible this year, the greatest obstacle to winning we had. So, what do we do? We fire our offensive coordinators/QB/WR coaches. The message that action sends is either that we are idiots with no clue as to what ails us OR our only commitment is to nepotism over doing what is necessary win. If it’s the former, the only logical decision is to go where there is a commitment to defense. If it’s the latter, the entire staff will be out of a job next year, so the only logical decision is to go where there’s a commitment to defense. Either way, OU is out in the cold with this recruit.

          • Kody K. says:

I was really hoping to land this kid. What a pair him and Deberry would make. I am still going to keep my fingers crossed.

          • JD says:

I don’t like the odds now…if he decides w out visiting then I just don’t see it happening…his bro is on their team and I expect him to feel the pressure to stay committed

          • James D-Space says:

Last visit before signing day and we will send in our closer! Love it!

          • boomersooner says:

awesome. stephen dale’s sock account is back

          • Boom says:

C’mon boomersooner, JB is a donor so he can say the same thing over and over. We all get it and agree there needs to be some changes but it will take some time. However, the issue is BGB is not on JB’s timeline.

          • boomersooner says:

everybody who never has any positive thoughts in their head need to write a letter. get together, come up with the game plan and tell bob what he is to do. and then come back here and let us all know what the answer was. pretty sure it’ll be somewhere between scram and go take a deuce in your hat

          • JD says:

I think the staff along with every other fan in soonerdom knows that the offense and specifically the passing game was to blame for our demise…hence the reason they were let go with out finding other jobs first…something Bob doesn’t really like to do

          • Mizuno44 says:

Quite a predicament we’ve put ourselves in, so hopefully with the new offensive leadership we can hang 90 on every team we play next year.

        • James D-Space says:

No no it’s ok. Go visit Vandy and then come see us last, right before signing day.
Something we can show him that Vandy can’t is a trophy case full with ships in it!
Vandy can only talk about the hope of having a trophy case full of ships in it…. Big ass difference.

  • JB says:

As poor as our LB situation is with the need for immediate help, I’m surprised we aren’t hitting up the JUCOs hard.

    • JD says:

I wasn’t under the impression we needed immediate help…yeah we need to build depth but with Shannon returning along with both Evans and Alexander getting another year experience we have some players along with Evans and Bolton…There isn’t a spot really “open” and usually juco guys want to come in to an open situation

    • Zack says:

I don’t think we need as immediate of help as it may seem. We do return a lot of guys who have played a lot of snaps. Striker, obo, and bond at olb. Then Evans, alexander and shannon inside. Then we will see how good Tay Evans and Bolton are this year. But we do need to get 4 incoming freshmen that way we’re ready to replace striker bond and shannon in 2016.

      • hOUligan says:

Not ‘immediate’ but of the 14 roster LBs, lose 4 and have 4 JRs. Need to keep the depth but also need a huge talent infusion.

    • Zack says:

Also I think we will see better play from the dline even though phillips is gone. Most people know he’s a prototypical NG but many have criticized that he doesn’t/didn’t bring it every play. If the next guy is just consistent then I expect our front 7 to look better.

    • hOUligan says:

Calling Dwaine Thomas…call for Mr. Dwaine Thomas….

  • Jeff says:

So is Josh Smith coming for sure????

    • Jordan Esco says:

It would appear that’s up in the air at the moment, at least according to that 247 report.

    • hOUligan says:

Saw another article yesterday before the 247 article. The 16th is a huge recruiting weekend and Vandy wants to bring in all of their commits and some prospective commits at one time. Was surprised to hear Smith was going to visit OU instead. It makes sense and I don’t think it will stop Smith from visiting. If anything keeps Smith at Vandy, he has an older brother on the squad and his desire for a degree in biomechanical engineering, which I am not sure OU offers.

  • Jeff says:

Actually Smith is not coming but hopefully he will make it before NSD

    • Doobie74OU says:

I wouldn’t have been as worried if he had rescheduled the OU visit immediately cause I wouldn’t mind being the last one to leave a impression on him but since he didn’t reschedule it has me worried about this one!

  • Mr. Jones says:

Tevita Halalilo confirmed he is staying with UCLA. You think this hurts or helps OU’s chances with Wariboko?

  • curt gomer says:

If that 247 story on Josh Smith is accurate any idea if Van Jefferson still comes?

    • JD says:

Hard to say…having an OC by then might help

      • curt gomer says:

He hasn’t shot the report down on twitter yet so its probably true i guess.

      • SCKSChief says:

What is this “OC” of which you speak?

        • curt gomer says:

          offensive coordinator

          • SCKSChief says:

I know what it means. I was being…not sure “flippant” or “facetious” is the right word…just being a goof cause we’re all on pins and needles waiting and the hire is seemingly taking FOREVER.

            Sorry.

          • curt gomer says:

I guess no news yet might be a sign Stoops is going to try and get Frost so maybe its a good thing. Really hate the news on Josh Smith, I had vissions of him and DeBerry tearing it up the next few years

          • eastoksooner says:

I’ve had a sneaking feeling today since we have not heard anything yet, that after the NC game on Monday we will announce Frost as our new OC. Probably just wishful thinking though.

          • Easton says:

Its rough. After Monday, Maybe leaks Sunday, or is it Frost, then not even til Wednesday because the flights out of Oregon, then the interview, then the other hire. Yeah, neurosis over this has set in.

          • Exiled In Ohio says:

I just assumed SCKSChief was having age problems … like me!

          • James D-Space says:

            Lol… That’s awesome.

        • JD says:

Not sure if serious…if you are then Offensive Coordinator

    • Jordan Esco says:

Even if he does, I don’t believe OU stands much of a chance here.

  • curt gomer says:

JM tweeted he was talking to someone in (443) thats Maryland, who would that be? 2016 recruit?

  • blaster1371 says:

I still don’t see the appeal of going to Vanderbilt unless one is looking at a specific academic characteristic. OU’s 8-5 season would be a morale booster for Vandy. They are perpetual bottom feeders in the sec.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Coaching decisions are happening now…The coaches convention is today through next Wednesday. That is when our deals will be done.

  • soonermusic says:

I know it’s highly unusual for head coaches to leave immediately after winning a national championship–Schnelleberger at Miami and Johnny Majors at Pitt being notable exceptions from many years ago. But what about head coordinators? Anybody know how unusual it would be for, let’s just randomly pick the OC, for the sake of argument, to leave a team right after winning a national championship? I guess I should add: for anything other than a head coaching job?

    • Borba22 says:

Well if he wants to run his own system with his own little tweaks to it, and also get a raise by making said move, could be a pretty legitimate reason. Add in that that randomly picked OC will be losing his starting QB after the year, you never know. Also, interesting note, randomly picked OC worked with just recently promoted Co-DC at Northern Iowa.

      • soonermusic says:

Yeah, I totally get all the reasons why it might seem like a good idea or even a plausible one, but since there would seem to be a few balancing arguments on the other side, I’m just wondering if anyone knows of a time when it’s actually happened.

  • hOUligan says:

With all of Coach Monty’s activity, anyone know if he has been in touch with Arthur McGinnis, New Orleans – AC 504??? He’s scheduled to visit 1/30 but a little love from Monty and the twitterverse would not hurt. A little tidbit on Smith and McGinnis from their time at ‘The Opening’ this past summer.

    To The Sooner Nation:
    All is well.
    No news is Good news!!

  • curt gomer says:

Darren Carrington has been suspended for championship game. Oregon star reciever.

  • sooner8 says:

I think a frosty might taste pretty good!!

  • sooner8 says:

Every time I hear Kish I cringe!!!!He may be a great person, but has brought nothing to OU since being hired!!

  • Mizuno44 says:

The sluggish pace for everything, coaches, recruiting news, is really beginning to reek havoc on my digestive system!

  • Sooner Ray says:

Is it wrong that I’m actually watching OU vs. Arkansas in gymnastics right now?

  • Zack says:

Seeing talk on Twitter that us fans are crazy for thinking we have a shot at frost. Their reasoning “if he didn’t take a HC job why would he go to be ou’s oc?” My answer to that is because he doesn’t want to coach at New Mexico or western Michigan he wants to find a big time job. Showing a skill outside of a system school would be a step toward a big time job.

    • Mizuno44 says:

Right on, that Oregon offense was there when he arrived, and will remain when he leaves

    • Sooner Ray says:

You convinced me but I don’t know about all these crazy people in here.

    • Jonathan Taylor says:

They are hoping for a dream right now. I admit he would be a dream hire, but I just don’t see it. My money is on Combie and someone he brings in.

      • Zack says:

I like cumbie but I don’t know if he’s ready to be a play caller. I want him to fix these QBs because I know they’re not all scrubs. People got on heupel for not being able to recruit yet the last 3 qb’s were 4 star guys so it’s not like he went after guys who only had offers from north texas and utsa

    • Waters says:

Us crazy fans have our reasons:
      1. One million dollars
      2. Establish his credentials to get a choice Division 1 HC position; Not a ” plug and play” OC
      3. Other factors:
Time delay, no negative response from Frost, Stoops behavior
Similarities to Leach hire, Nebraska QB
      4. Money, Money, Money that Oregon IMHO will not pay to keep him.
      5. Much more valuable to us than Oregon

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

Anyone else think the righting is on the wall for Kish, BJW, and maybe Mike with Monty and Boulware scooping up the LB and DB recruits?

One thing we know about Dean…he never goes out on a limb. If he is feeling it and made Bob flinch, hell Bob may have leaned over and gave him the scoop right in his ear hole, I’m all in on this. I just wish he had put a percentage on it, always makes me feel better.

  • curt gomer says:

Anyone know if Nebraska tried to get Frost when they fired Pelini?

    • Sooner Ray says:

Never heard anything about that, would be very interested to know.

    • CKill1 says:

I live across the river from Omaha, and most of my (tasteless) friends are NU fans with 2 that are boosters and close to the program. Lots of folks up here wanted Frost badly, but apparently Frost isn’t tight with the current admin and doesn’t like Perlman or Eichorst. Osborne’s influence is waning and so Frost wasn’t ever seriously considered.

  • Puma says:

I just hope that whoever we hire, if they do a good job, the oklahoma fan base can learn to appreciate them. OC at OU is the most hated person in oklahoma. People hated Wilson. All the guy did was lead the highest scoring offense in a season in the NCAA

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

      Hoover…

Look, I can’t say that Frost wouldn’t make a terrific HC, but I’m sure it’s not that easy. However, if this team had the privilege of having a Scott Frost AND a Jerry Montgomery on it’s staff, I would say that the sky was the limit.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Not sure Hoover has the clout to scratch his own ass. But he certainly thinks he does.

  • RBear says:

Frost’s similar situation before Nebraska’s hiring of Mike Riley- interview took place as Oregon was preparing for the PAC 12 championship game vs Arizona- very similar circumstances and somewhat enlightening. I like him-

    http://www.csnnw.com/ducks/oregon-oc-scott-frost-deflects-nebraska-rumors

    • Sooner Ray says:

Hard to tell whether he feels like he’s not ready to be a HC at a major University or if Nebraska felt he wasn’t ready. I’m guessing they had a conversation based on the way he deflected the questions.

      • RBear says:

I really do think he’d jump at the chance to be at a program with as much history as OU and to have a shot at filling Bob’s shoes down the line. Maybe missing out on the Nebish gig left him wondering if/when an opportunity to work at such an institution would ever happen again. It’s got to be really difficult to coach at your Alma Mater and not feel the pressure cooker (see JH)- OU offers the same prestige without the pressure of being “family”.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Also assuming he has thought about being a head coach, they wanted a man “right now” and he may not have wanted to miss out on a run for a natty.

          • RBear says:

If indeed OU is pursuing Frost, they’re certainly going about it the right way, with respect to his current situation.

          • Sooner Ray says:

            Absolutely.

          • eastoksooner says:

I’m thinking since we have heard anything yet, we are going after him. He may be interested and that’s why everything is so quiet. As EasTex said the “cackling” has stopped.

  • boomersooner says:

anybody heard of this frost guy?

  • Boomer4life says:

    The dynamic duo!

  • curt gomer says:

When Scott Frost DC (yes DC) at Northern Iowa, his DL coach was Jerry Montgomery, who was just promoted to co-DC at OU. Connect those dots.

  • Waters says:

    Additional Comments:
    1. Stoops does not want a back to the future Leach OC. He has always wanted a balanced
offense and not an air raid offense
    2. He wants to repeat the experience of a creative new offense in the Big 12-2
    3. Oregon and Auburn are the new creative offenses that work.
    4. Don’t underestimate Switzer’s influence who supports the Auburn or Oregon Offense.
5.The Auburn OC is silent with no reason to be
    6. Frost is the last OC standing and a reason to be silent

  • RBear says:

I just want someone innovative and creative enough to adjust his offense to what the defenses are doing/giving- Meaning, once defenses catch up to what we’re doing, have a Plan B and/or make in-game adjustments; take advantage of the talents on your roster and take what the opposing D’s are giving (exploit their weaknesses).

    • Brad Holland says:

I agree but if we don’t have a qb that can make a simple read and make routine throws then we won’t have the ability to ever take what the D gives us.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

    • EasTex says:
