2015 Texas A&M quarterback commit, Kyler Murray, visited Oklahoma a few weeks back for the Kansas State game. As the son of a former TAMU quarterback Kevin Murray, it has long been assumed that Kyler would end up in College Station.
After the visit to Norman, I caught up with Kevin (Kyler’s father) but he told me they were not making any public comments about Kyler’s recruitment at that time. TFB found that interesting only because if you’re committed to a school and sure about that decision, why not just say that? It is also of note that Kyler is close friends with Bobby and Tay Evans as all three play or played for Allen h.s. Tay of course is already playing for OU and Bobby is a current 2015 commit.
Recently, however, TFB contributor, Alex King, who covers Northern Texas recruiting for us, spoke to a source close to the Murray family. The source told him that Kyler and Kevin’s “interest in OU is very real.” He said that the instability at Texas A&M has caused them some concern.
Alex was also told that if Murray was to go to Oklahoma, the chances of 2015 WR DaMarkus Lodge heading to Norman with him would be very high. We’ve since spoken to the coach at Cedar Hill who confirmed that Mike Stoops dropped by recently to visit Lodge, which would seem to indicate there is still interest on OU’s side in the talented wide receiver. Hard to imagine there not being interest, especially after the impending Dannon Cavil transfer.
I want to be clear that we aren’t saying there is a great chance of a flip happening. In fact, we’re not even saying there is a good chance. What we are saying, however, is that according to a reliable source, the trip to Norman wasn’t just Kyler “taking a trip” like can be the case when it comes to recruiting. While Murray may still end up at Texas A&M (as most expect), we are being told that OU is at least more formidable of a threat than most of the public seems to think.

Uhh…if this happened….#yogurtjeans
Lol funny hashtag #yogurtjeans
Lmao…TMI
Now that would be a coup if Murray and/or Lodge were to commit to OU by signing day.
yep. Lodge is the real deal and would be ready to go next year. IF DGB stayed and OU had Lodge to go with Sterling…oooooooweeeee shut the front door!
IF DGB stays and the development continues with the young skill positions players including #9 then its all on Coach B and the OLine coming together.
If we have those WR’s & like Josh says, OL comes together while keeping Striker, Tapp, & Phillips, that would be a fun.
And back door.
And windows.
Very unlikely, so I’m not getting my hopes up, but having both Lodge and Murray would be amazing.
I don’t see this happening but boy would that be a nice spark in the recruiting season if it did.
Like others have said, I don’t think it will happen. Maybe it’s easier not to get the hopes up. But what is going on at A&M and Tx Tech is beyond just a rough patch. The direction of the programs just seem to be taking quick nose dives. Who would have thought? I mean it’s a good thing for the Aggies that they played those cupcakes, because I don’t see them winning any more games, and as for Tech, they are looking at a 3 win season. What a quick fall.
So true.
Despite the “awesome” recruiting classes Sumlin has hauled in, you could see immediately there’s a huge lack of discipline going on with that program. I know every major program has a few trouble makers, but coaches in control will nip it quickly, even if it sets the program back temporarily.
With that kind of talent all over the field and waiting in the wings to play, there’s absolutely zero reason A&M shouldn’t lose more than 1-2 games in any season, but we’re witnessing what happens when players are allowed to run the asylum. You can see it going on at Tech, too. “Players Coaches” are always fun for the players, because they can get away with things more stern coaches won’t allow. And when you act and practice like a clown, well, the clown car is what you get on the field.
Yep. And especially when your head coach wants to rub noses with rappers and whatnot with your star player. Sweet role model
I weep bitter, salty tears for both of them.
Great post. Thanks for keeping us updated.
Another development to watch in this situation is what happens come the MLB draft.
Not likely indeed. See he has some interest in the Ducks, which would probably be a better fit for him if he decides aTm is too sketchy. Would love to have Lodge.
Kyler is a leader, winner and a good kid. I don’t care about his height, he just wins. I’m curious, he may want to play baseball too. He plays on a high level baseball league in the summers and his uncle Calvin played in the bigs for a long time. Keep my fingers crossed.
I’m really interested to see how the recruiting shakes out with TT & ATM if their seasons continue to go downhill.
IF this were to happen, the real potential reward IMO is the seeming likelihood of flipping 2016 monster 5-star OT Greg Little. Man, would that be a gift.
Great point which they still have a shot IMO to flip little anyways. That’s the thing with those super early verbal commits. Look at a few of our early commits for this class…wariboko Jamille Johnson and lampkin, none will end up at ou unless wariboko chooses to recommit
OU is that kid in high school that all the girls know about. He’s handsome, or whatever, and funny, but he’s not sexy or magnetic. The girls all hug him and tell him how wonderful he is, but he never seems to have a girlfriend.
OU needs to stop being this kid.
Ha you’re saying OU gets friendzoned lol… sad and true
L’carpetron……………how true !!
Less Landry Jones and more Johnny Football.
Murray is 5’11” 180 lbs, why would OU want him as their QB? I dont
“Don’t judge a book by its cover”
-Drew Brees
A few others.
Jeff Garcia
Doug flute
Russell Wilson
And plenty before that.
How many 5’11” QB’s didnt make it?
Listed at 5’11”; Which means he is 5’10”
The few team members I was around when at OU were taller and prolly heavier than listed. I think it was part psych job on the opponents.
I’m 5’11” flat footed and I remember towering over (5’11”) Jonathan Nelson. I asked him how in the world he could be listed at 5’11”, he said, ” I guess they gave me a few inches”. All teams exaggerate player size
Reminds me of the quote, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”
For the longest time I thought that OU grad and Sooner FB star Darrell K. Royal (for whom the Baja Oklahoma FB stadium is named) coined that phrase – but it may be attributed to: Mark Twain; or Dwight Eisenhower; or a union leader in the 1930s named Bill Jones. The scholars are undecided.
You may be right. I’m not sure what knight is listed at but I’ve seen 6’1-6’3. I’ve always thought he was more like 6’0 flat. But when comparing him next to alex ross who’s been listed at 6’2…I would say knight is maybe 6’4 on the Alex ross scale.
But the point is height only matters to some.
And?
That’s not the argument. You think Manning, Brady, etc are good because they’re tall? They’re good because they’re good. If you’re 5’11” and trying to be a center in the NBA, you’re probly not gonna get a job, but if you wanna be a qb in the NFL, you just need to be good
How many 6’3” QB’s make it?
ALL OF THEM…
Smells like a troll…
@soonerjunky:disqus
Didn’t make what—-the NFL? Lol! OU is not an NFL team.
“What he said”
—Johnny Manziel.
“Ditto”
—–Russell Wilson
He lit up the opening.
I think he could run the offense we ran against ISU perfectly. It is up to Stoops and Heupel to be consistent with it though
Manziel was 5’11” 185 his last year at ATM. He did ok. Murray has been groomed and he’s an incredible talent, leader, & winner. Go watch his highlights from any year and you will know why we want him
BTW – Lofton was less that 6′ LB and he’s a pro bowler.
I expect nothing but wish for everything. Great news none the less
I would love it if Kyler Murray came to Oklahoma ,,
I would be even happier if we got Jarret Stidham
This is the year we need to take a bigger local class. I think the talent pool is deep enough this year to justify it. We may be too late but maybe a a full press from now to NSD we can get it done. Besides I thought we were in the business of winning championships and providing education. Not getting 17 year olds who are “drafted in waiting”
Nothing against this kid or any kid, but to me the 2015 class looks like it could use some more okies. The talent looks there.
Talented LB’s / DB/s are needed but talented players at every position are always welcome. If Murray wants to ‘flip’ —-ok……….Just saying defensive talent is needed first and foremost………and OU may not do well at either position of need.
amen……..our inside backer position is a weakness
OU has four (4) underclass QB’s now. aTm has only 2 : Allen and the suspended Hill. It would seem aTm offers a quicker route to playing time but I was intrigued by what ” unsteadiness” is going on at aTm as mentioned in the article. Care to share ???
A&M has the #1 qb recruit in the country for 2014 though, we dont.
Id rather try and beat out cody thomas and justice hansen than kyle allen.
I bet Baker Mayfield does that very thing next year. He might give Knight a run for his money.
Very well might. But baker will be a junior, and wont have any bearing on Murray’s decision.
gonna go out on a limb here and say he was nicely saying they suck something fierce
Guys, Kevin was a “play for pay” guy for Jackie Sherrill back in the day. It’s interesting to note that Daddy would not answer questions concerning his son’s recruiting process. Don’t even begin to believe he’s going anywhere other than A&M.
Interesting tidbit if confirmed. Seems it’s going to be Dad’s decision, not so much the kid’s?
Let’s just say I’ll be shocked if he goes anywhere but A&M. But it won’t be OU if he doesn’t.
The first time I saw Murray play he was a tiny, baby faced killer as a sophomore in the state championship game. He stole the show and made me jump up in my chair numerous times and just go “WOW.”
Followed him more closely in his junior season into the state championship again and he had improved dramatically from his previous remarkable season and seemed more mature physically.
Then came his outstanding performance in The Opening.
This season he doesn’t have quite as talented a team around him, particularly on defense and the loss of Bobby Evans, yet Allen is still riding a 38 game winning streak with him as QB.
He can slice and dice with his feet, but it is his passing that I find so amazing. He can make every kind of throw, he can throw with velocity or drop it in a bucket just about anywhere on the field.
Should he come to OU I would be thrilled, even with the knowledge that some of our current QBs and recruits would look elsewhere.
I realize it is pure speculation, but the possibility is thrilling.
It’s always good to hear from someone with eyes in the field. Much better than I heard from a friend of a friend. 🙂
Some people say Miley Football had the “it” factor, Murray has the “IT” factor without the underage drinking and high school arrests.
That’s nice to hear, I haven’t seen much of Murray save a few highlights. Hopefully he is starting to realize how ugly Maroon really is…
This video is from the first time I saw him as a soph.
He’s only gotten better.
Besides that lifeless color at TAMU, they don’t run the style of offense he is used to, but OU does.

Perhaps I’ve been under a rock or something, but what “instability” at Texas A&M? Are they losing coaches?
I think the instability is scuffling to win some ballgames
Dauuum, tell it like it is, kick’em in the nutes, rub their nose in that pile they’re dropping on the floor, that’ll teach’em! HAHA.
I don’t think too highly of those who think too highly of themselves
LOL!!! True, but funny nonetheless
I didn’t realize A&M’s 6-3 record was so much more unstable than our 6-2 record…
i tried to look at strength of schedule and can’t get an honest answer. if you have every single sec team ranked in the top 25 of schedule strength and five of the others are just there because they’re bad football teams…that ain’t a strength of schedule, that’s a bull-o-meter. when your best win is a bad so car team and you just beat ulm by 5…something’s wrong
Excellent point.
They have been bad this year. They haven’t played well on defense, so so on offense and just poor play all around. Then with Kenny Hill getting suspended there are probably things happening inside that we don’t know about and they don’t want no part of it. This is just speculation but we won’t know unless someone spills the beans. Plus the “newness” is wearing off being in the sec a little and everyone is starting to see who they really are.
Murray probably just wants to watch a good college game because he may have some friends playing for Baylor. The location is close enough to Dallas to make for an easy drive plus he gets a free ducat. Is he good enough to beat out 4 guys in front of him and play regularly as a frosh ? Not many are.
Not sure if this was mentioned, but Murray was at the KSU AND Texas games. He was at back-to-back Sooner games. I think it’s safe to say the interest is there.
OU has to get a new OC if they are serious enough to play this kid in the future. Kyler is not the OU style qb.
I think he is the perfect style QB for the O OU is running right now. Perfect.
I’m happy with this report but that’s a LONGSHOT. We are pretty stacked at QB with Baker Mayfield and Trevor at QB1 and 2.
I guess he can look at it as come in and sit for two years but guys rarely look at it that way. I can’t believe Texas isn’t bringing in multiple QB’s this year. They have one guy committed from NM.
Meanwhile Florida State has THREE four star QB’s committed in this class. Talk about competition! That’s what Texas needs to do.
