A little history lesson from one of the “elder statesmen” on TFB. Back n the 70’s and 80’s, there were very few athletes who committed early. Signing day was chaotic to state it mildly. Coaches would leave the LOI with the player or his coach. Some players would come to school with 20-30 LOI’s in their hands. Then, they would fax in the one they were accepting. Often they would fax several to different schools and arguments would ensue as to which one was sent in first as that is the one that counted. Coaches literally had no idea what there class was going to look like until the faxes started pouring in. So many NSD surprises and disappointments. A totally different feeling on NSD back then.

Just heard Gabriel Campbell say he is already up to 270#.
For some reason he is the most intriguing player in this class to me. 6’6″ DE’s can be freaky good if they develop right. I haven’t watched his tape, but those measurables are similar to Jevon Kearse and Julius Peppers.

I can respect the decision because the original reason he de-committed was that he wanted to play with his brother, Max. UCLA offered Max, correct? If that was what really drove his decision, he gets to play with his brother now.

OU didn’t miss out on Barnett, they let him go. It seemed pretty obvious to me last summer that Wariboko was looking to go anywhere away from home but the OU staff was doing a good job of pulling him back in. Some kids want to get away and explore new places. Nothing wrong with that. It happens in every state every year.

In regards to Wariboko, I always like to see the Oklahoma kids go to OU let alone be gung ho about it (Sunderland). I am really looking forward to watching who Bedenbaugh brought in and feel confident in what he see’s in Samia, Evans, Danley, Herne and Ford. Remember the videos of those guy’s…Bedenbaugh want’s them mean, he can teach technique. Let alone after a year with Bryd/Schmidty we are going to see some beaters.

So while last year’s NSD was full of pleasant surprises, this year feels disappointing. No surprise flips for/against us (McKinney doesn’t count as he’s been known for days), and we lost out of Wariboko. Couldn’t flip Lampkin back. And our WR pulls seemd like they came from far down the list after missing out on the top guys. Recruiting is an unexact science, but it sure feels like a perception issue this year. And I don’t like it. Hopefully our new coaches can produce a solid product this year and get some good momentum going.
The DTs we got > Lampkin. Don’t care about Wariboko with our depth, just glad he won’t be across the line from us each year. An ESPN 300 WR, Top 50 JUCO WR, and good local prospect, yeah these are clearly not worth guys /sarcasm.

Agree to disagree about Lampkin. His film was outstanding. Wariboko would have been excellent depth, and you can never have too many good lineman. But I’m with you, OL was a place we could spare a loss. It just sucks that the kid is from up the road. And with all due respect, the only guy that really excites me is Westbrook. He’s the only guy’s film who truly says “game changer”.

Don’t care about stars. I look at what these guys do on the field, who they do it against, instincts, etc. Parts of this class are awesome, and I’m excited about those guys. It just feels like we missed some guys this year b/c of the crap product we put on the field this year. That stings.

Like I’ve said, rankings don’t always mean too much. A lot of guys never pan out, and no-name guys come out of nowhere. And again, it feels disappointing b/c we missed on guys we normally wouldn’t. I don’t like that feeling.
I trust rankings over your evaluation of highlight reels.
Your mistake. Highlight reels show the good and bad. The good isn’t always as good as you think. But you go ahead and trust rankings that are wrong over half of the time.

I hear you Jim. However, I’m not big on player star rankings, remember Russell Wilson was a 2-Star recruit and he turned out to be pretty good. I believe we have a solid recruiting class regardless of the rankings.
I think the rebuilt coaching staff will be better suited for recruiting a little better next year. Also, if we get this offense to looking like it has an identity and the defense improves we’ll be in better shape. I think I read where Riley wants more speed, and I’m guessing LB’s and a QB will be a primary concern. in the next class.

Up until maybe the past 2-3 years, Wariboko was the type of player who always stayed home. Top-flight player from Oklahoma who goes to OU b/c that’s what has historically happened. I get that every kid is different, is a teenager, and can change his mind in a heartbeat, but in the past, we didn’t have to worry about a kid doing that. We use to lock those kids down early. Now we’re fighting like hell until the final day to keep kids, like Steven Parker, from going elsewhere. It just feels different nowadays.

no one was saying mike couldn’t develop/coach DBs until this yr. Typical over reaction/what have you done for me lately. he didn’t suddenly forget how to coach.
I think the concern many have had is not that he suddenly forgot how to coach, but that this last season he may have to some degree lost the loyalty and respect of his players. Right now I’m just not sure how well Mike is connecting with his guys on the field. Hopefully that will turn around next season.

I’m going to be “that guy” since no one else will and I don’t care who rips me afterward. This class has only 2 LBs, and we needed at least 4. We have ZERO QBs in the class, a position of immense need for the Sooner offense when the best hope we have for a quality QB is a transfer walk on from TTU. There are some good players in this class, some to be excited about. I think McGinnis will be the Perine of this class but on D. That said, the overall class isn’t a top 5 where we need to be. I don’t give a crap about recruiting rankings, but I do care about who else is recruiting the players we’re after. We aren’t winning enough battles.
Agree somewhat. Would like to have won more battles. However, if you look at the average star ranking throughout BS stay, it is slightly above average. LB: 2 of 20 offers were accepted.
Since 06 OU has trouble recruiting LBS. Of 24 taken 7 contributed. Hansen, Thomas, Knight and Mayfield all have at least two years to play. No need for a QB until next year. OU was top 5 2001 to 2005…It comes with winning unless you are a major market team (USC, now UCLA, Texas…).
why? don’t you think the coaches, who know more than any of us, would throw out offer after offer to get bodies in here if they felt lb was dire? don’t you think the coaches think having 4 qb’s is enough and shouldn’t fire out another scholarship, especially when mayfield is the guy for this year?

Give me a quick breakdown of Hulk. I know what I see but would like your thoughts.
I think he will be a damn good ILB. In the system we run he would be our Bandit ILB which is more of a plugger and has less pass coverage responsibility. Uses his hands well and leverages blockers well. I think he will be great in run fits. He will take on and defeat blocks in the hole and keep gap integrity which is crucial. Playing different positions tells me he is a smart football player and seems to have very good instincts. Players in LA usually have higher ceilings because they are such great athletes that might not have gotten the greatest of HS coaching but that’s just a generalization from a TX HS football coach.

I know this is petty but I like to understand how things work and how Rivals weighs their rankings. I always thought it was just that they weighed quantity too heavy vs, quality but this does not make sense to me. Just like to understand how ND is ranked higher with one less commit and lower star value??
I think it’s important to look at average star ranking. We are about 8th now was 5th a week ago.
Each individual recruit gets a rating and that factors into the team ratings. So a couple 4 stars for ND have better ratings than a couple 4 stars for OU.
You forgot the media bias component. ND gets it, OU does not.

This is 100% one of our best classes in a while. We needed LB help which we got, just not the numbers that were desired. We got no 5* according to Rivals but we have a ton of 4* talent, and looking at our 3* talent, they look good as well. We got faster and I think some of these young men are going to push the incumbents for starting spots when the summer shakes out.

Coach Gundy saying he will get all tailbacks on the field whether that be on special teams, slot wr, or running a two tailback set. I like the sound of that. Think of Perine and Mixon in the backfield at the same time.

Totally agree. That kid was so underutilized it was embarrassing. He may have not been the practice player they wished he was but the guy was beast when game time rolled around. He just never got the reps in the game I wished he would’ve.
If you are not a practice player than you are not a player. You earn your time on Saturday during the week.
I get that. I just think some seize the moment more in a game than practice. I’m not saying he wasn’t practicing hard but maybe better in the spotlight. I suppose I could have worded that differently.

and this is known going in. if you just need the lights to perform that’s one thing, but if you put forth no effort in practice, then you will and should find yourself down the depth chart. no one’s fault but his if there was no effort.
i will use an example from my life because that’s what i know. i stunk during spring training. i’m talking bad. but when the season started, everything just clicked. i was told that i was a guy who needed the lights to be on to get everything out of myself.
if he wasn’t playing, knowing bob like the outside observer i am, then he wasn’t giving the effort in practice
They praised Blake Bell all the time for his effort. He was even wiling to change positions completely for the team when they asked. Yet he was almost completely ignored even when he was wide open and we were desperate for yards and first downs. It was like we had preset all of our plays regardless of whether they were working and ignoring new feedback and things we learned from the field of play. Very poor offensive coaching, it seemed to me, this season and I don’t believe it was just Trevor Knight not “seeing’ Bell all those times even though that was a part of it. Glad for the coaching changes.
Agree. I guess I worded that wrong. I have no idea what kind of player he was in practice other than what I have heard. That he seemed to shine much brighter at game time than practice, as is the case with many talented athletes. They still have to have good work ethics to get on that field though.

You would think that if you develop a strong enough relationship with someone like that you would do them the courtesy. I understand it’s a big decision to make but I’ve known men younger make tougher ones. And not all kids do it obviously.

The kids we signed I like better than him and obviously so did the coaches. Get mad all you want kid, you’re still playing D-1 ball for a coach that will surely leave it all on the field. Wish him the best for sure cause he is a Oklahoma kid.
Jackson Jeffcoat said the exact same thing going into Texas and he only beat us his Senior year. So whatever this kid says, no one cares.

How did things go down??
I think OU has really struggled in getting D-Line help up until the last 2 seasons, now I know we have got a few guys here and there but, depth has been an issue, but feel last 2 classes we have done extremely well. O-Line has been nice the last 2 seasons as well, sure we have missed on some guys but still a happy camper. The LB’s that we signed are nice, mean not a lot of depth but nice prospects, Stoops said we had 11 on the depth chart with DeBerry and McGinnis and he said that’s where we want to be, so that mean no more 3-4 or does he feel those guys will be enough, or maybe a safety or two switch positions this year? All in all I like it, I feel great class considering the let down of the season, which a lot of people have said also, but, still nice haul!

This was an interesting day and was pleased with who we got. I think we met most of our needs. I really enjoyed it because there was really no drama and everything went smooth. It will be interesting to see who will play this year. I really hope B. Stoops has every position open and let the best player(s) play. Now the next question is when are we going to find out about some of the 2016 players.:)

The last two classes have been good coups. Comparing the two by positions group: Running back- Obviously, the 2014 class at this point. Oline- debatable but I’ll take the 2014 class with Brown, Frison and Dalton looking tight. LBers- Easy 2015 with Deberry and Hulk. Dline- Really like this year’s group by far. Receivers- Wow, since it’s by group I’ll take the 2014 class although Dede will be the star of both classes. Cornerback- 2015 class with future standout Mbanasor. Safety- 2015 class with three 4* studs coming in. QB- no contest and can’t wait for Seibert to start setting field goal records in an awesome special teams recruit for 2015.

Very true. I don’t think the coaches will want to burn a potential redshirt year for McGinnis or Deberry. On the other hand, if depth becomes a factor I see Hulk as being more ready at this point. I love both guys equally though.

With this many comments I am not sure this will get answered but, I will try any way. Do you think either LB will get significant playing time tis year? I know we need LBs like crazy and next year we will have to go the JUCO rout for a couple but do we need these young men to step in this year? If we do you believe they can be better than what we have?
I would not count on either of them getting significant playing tine this year. That said if they are good enough Stoops has a history of not being scared to start a freshman, but I think with Shannon coming back we will be set for next year already. It also depends on what defense we run next year which could change based on possible coaching changes still looming.

I really want OU to try Dalton Wood out at OLB. The guy is so athletic, fast for his size, and he has good hands. Add in the fact that he plays mean and does not shy away from contact. I think Dalton would be awesome on the D. This is the perfect kind of athlete to put on the D and allow him to make a name for himself.
I agree I think Wood COULD potentially be a Rocky Calmus level of linebacker for us if moved there. Honestly I think he will succeed in whatever position he ends up at. Just love getting an Oklahoma strong kid that grew up wanting to play for OUr Sooners

We have a few TE that should be good in the flex, we have 2 full backs, and we need a little help with LBs. I would give him a shot at that position and see if he would be ready to go his Redshirt sophomore year.

Yes, but I think that is kind of a line. Bob believes in playing the kids who can help and if a Freshman comes in and out performs a Jr he will play. I guess it is up the Dalton to prove he does not need a Redshirt. I still would play him at LB or at least have him work on it during the Spring and see where it goes.

I’m going with DeDe Westrbrook. I think its a WR and he’s both a Juco and an early entry so he would seem to have a leg up.
If he has a leg up he may be a bit slow in getting on the field first. If he would put that leg down and run with both feet he just might make your prediction come true. 🙂

I KNEW he was gonna be a stud, but I don’t think many folks around here even knew who he was until mid season. BUT I BY GOLLY DID!!
So did I and when I was talking about him many were so enamored with Mixon(for good reason) they didn’t really understand what I(and you) were seeing.
I was not surprised one bit by the early success he has had.
Well, I WAS shocked at his 400+ yd game, BUT, I wasn’t shocked at the way he abused tacklers. You know how many High Schools Tex has, so you know they can’t show highlights of every team, but SOMEHOW they were able to show Samaje’s each week and you can just imagine those poor HS kids trying to tackle him. It was unfair.. . . .unless you were a SOONER baby!!!
Well, that rainy day with KU, we knew it would be the running game to carry us, but I doubt anybody could have dreamed he would have a day like that.
I’ve watched him on utube since he was a soph, someone did an excellent job of archiving his career in video highlights. When I learned he had destroyed a knee I was concerned that was the last time we would ever hear of him. His dedication to not only rehabbing his knee, but increasing his leg strength and changing his running style to suit his body type was fun to watch. His junior year you could tell early on that he was a little tentative and then at some point early in that season he turned it loose. By the time his senior year rolled around he was an amazing physical specimen and a confident player.
Now, knowing not only what a great player he is, but an even better person, I have grown quite attached to him and sincerely wish to see him succeed at everything, sports and life.

Talent but the jury is still out on their coaching staff. USC’s talent is off the charts. Unfortunately for OU, as long as Mora is at UCLA, their talent is top tier as well. We lost a couple of recruits to UCLA this year and UCLA is impacting the Cali pipeline we were trying to sustain. Hope Mora leaves for the NFL soon.
Things have changed for them. UCLA, UO, ASU, Arizona and Stanford are much tougher than they were in the Carroll days.
I see a parallel between the BIG XII and the PAC, in that the new found success the middle of the pack teams are enjoying is more the result of the downturn of the traditional powers than anything else. It’s all cyclical IMO, so look for these teams to assume their traditional roles in their respective conferences soon.
Order must be restored and I’m not talking about the PAC.

The next thing I will do in the next few days is start reading their bios so I can get familiar with them. Some good reading to say the least. The most interesting one will be of Dalton Wood from McAlester. He might be the diamond in the rough of this class. Very blue collar type guy.
I was thrilled when Dalton committed. He may not have made a blip on the national radar, which is just fine with me. Kids like him that are not only physically talented, but born to be a Sooner, they will belly crawl over a mile of coals to win.
I’m as excited about him as anybody for those exact same reasons.
I’m pretty excited about the whole bunch, including the preferred walk-ons, but I think it will be hard to keep Wood off the field and I pity the foolish DB that tries to tackle him.
He will be a tough cover, no doubt. The only thing that concerns me is how big a role his position will play in Riley’s offense. Time will tell, but I’m pretty stoked!
That’s what I like about Wood, he can line up as a TE and block, or split out just before the snap. With so many talented players that need touches we may complain he didn’t get the ball enough like we did with Millard.
And who knows, given his build and physicality they may bulk him up and we never see him as a tight end.
He’ll do WHATEVER the coaches ask him to do, and bitch NOT ONCE! He will become a fan favorite.
As they should be. On paper they look really impressive. If these kids are anything close to be coachable, we will have a very good team these next few years.

Maybe a bit of a dark horse prediction, but I wouldnt be surprised if Dru Samia emerges as part of the OL rotation as a freshman. We may not need him to, but he seems to be incredibly focused on playing immediately.
He’s a physical and aggressive guy. He seems to be a mild person but he can flip on the nasty switch when needed.
