More Notes From Across The Pond

Morning TFB readers! As most of you know I’m in the U.K. on business, but have been trying to keep up with college football. I had a few notes I wanted to pass along this morning. I did manage to watch the first half of the OU vs. Texas Tech game.

Trevor Speights | Recruiting Note: 2016 RB Trevor Speights made his way to Oklahoma this past weekend for an official visit. Being out of the country on business, I obviously wasn’t able to speak to him on the phone but I did manage to exchange a few messages with him regarding the visit. The most interesting thing he mentioned was when I asked him if the Oklahoma visit met his expectations and he responded by saying, “I had a blast. I can’t imagine a better official visit.”

Speights did mention prior to the visit that he still plans on taking four more officials, but it’ll be interesting to see if that holds up…especially if Oklahoma can get a visit out of Stanford commit, Brandon Stephens. I think OU just needs a little leverage to give recruits a sense of urgency at the RB position. Based on what I saw from the first half, the game was certainly a great showcase for a running back prospect to see.

Kerry Cooks and Competition: Can I just say, this fella has exceeded expectations. I will be quite honest with you, OU had essentially pushed Dakota Austin to the side and then Cooks comes in and Austin is given a chance. I’m not intending this note to be a commentary on how well he or any of the other cornerbacks have played. I really just want to applaud Cooks for creating real competition, and for allowing these guys to prove it on the field.

There has been marked improvement from last year in the secondary and the statistics certainly back that up. And obviously coach Cooks has done a great job recruiting in his first year (though you never know what you’ve got until they’re on campus). But I really just love to see these new coaches giving everyone a chance and creating regular competition throughout the season. Even on the other side of the ball, I saw Dahu Green (a true freshman) get a ball thrown to him that, had he caught, would have been a touchdown (by the way…drop or not, I love the way he turned and attacked that ball).

The Defense: OU continued their quarters look defense from last week. As I mentioned my previous notes, OU was running some of that palms coverage early but not nearly as much. They’re also running out of different pre-snap look. It’s really interesting to see how quickly they shifted their defensive looks and calls during the season and, to be honest, I think it gives them their best chance of winning out.

OU still isn’t the most talented defense, but I do believe as a unit Mike Stoops is putting them in the right position. He’s giving up things where it’s necessary, but still trying to mask the areas he’s willing to sacrifice in. We always talk about players needing competition to push them to be better. I think all the new coaches on board have brought out, or maybe reinvigorated Mike Stoops. I know some of you may look back at this in a couple weeks and deride my comments if Baylor blows through Oklahoma. But if they play structurally/schematically how they’re playing now, then it gives them the best chance to slow Baylor’s attack.

Again I don’t know if OU has the talent to match Baylor (I know at certain positions they do not, which is why I think this structure works best), but talent can be acquired over time but you need to know that you’ve got a good foundation to recruit to and an emphasis on technique (which is clearly something Kerry Cooks & co. are doing right now).

The Baylor Game: With OU bouncing back after the Texas loss beating both Kansas State and Texas Tech, it’s looking more and more like the Baylor game is going to be a Top 10 match-up (unless there is an epic slip up by one of these squads in the next couple weeks). OU is going to have a rough stretch at the end, but I think they’ve put themselves in a great position.

I know a lot of people wish OU wouldn’t have lost to Texas, but for the purpose of the playoffs I’m not sure it really matters. Had OU been undefeated right now but dropped one of the last three games, I’d reckon that late loss would put them out of the Top 4 anyway. And if they win out from this point on, it’s hard to imagine them not being in the playoffs.

In other words, I think OU really needed to win the last three games regardless. What they couldn’t do was drop a game to Texas Tech or Kansas State and they didn’t. What is more, they looked impressive winning.

Nice read as always Thanks K Boomer

  • Jim says:

If OU wins out, they’re in. Because of the matchups, 1 Big 10 and 1 SEC currently ahead of us will lose. If we then proceed to beat 2 top 10 teams and a top 20 team, OU is in the playoff, period. I’m guessing TCU will beat OSU (and remain top 10) before we play them, Baylor as well, but OSU should remain ranked unless they get absolutely whipped.

If this quarters defense continues to develop and can contain these spread offenses, we are going to be one scary team come the end of November. Here’s to hoping!!

    • CoachTalk says:

they are ranked 10th. theyll stay ranked.

      • Jim says:

A&M went from #9 to unranked following losses to Alabama and Ole Miss. If the almighty SEC can have a team fall like that, you can beat the mortgage the Big 12 can too.

        • Scott Moore says:

You’re right, if they lose two. But if they can hang close they may stay up there. A$M got demolished twice.

      • OUwagon says:

All three are in the top ten, whoever comes out winner(s) of the round robin between OSU, TCU, Bay will be highly ranked. The loser(s) wont fall far down. OU just needs to continue improving on OL work, individual assignments, execution, and winning! I would like to see OU work on what they do best and greatly improve some things over next two weeks and not concern themselves with specific preparation for Baylor…
        BOOMER!

Puke St will upset Baylor but lose to TCU

Does it seem kind of quiet to anybody else with all of the visitors we had this weekend? I really thought we would get a BOOM yesterday.

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

They’re still jumping around. Nobody told them the party’s over.

I’m sure Kliffy got the message

        • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

He’s crying at his vanity as we speak. Next to a trashcan full of flowers from players’ mamas. He tossed them away in his egomaniacal rage (but only after taking the time to bite each chocolate piece to find the truffles in his Godiva and Ferrero Rocher assortments).

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

At one point, I saw Will Johnson stone the slot right at the line. Popped him, got inside hands, and froze him where he stood. I know it has more to do with schemes and structures, but since Byrd was pulled, and since sliding Parker to safety and Johnson to NB, this defense has a new look-and-feel that is exciting to watch. Guys are in the position to make plays, and while I can’t speak to the talent level, from my uninformed perspective, it seems they got some rattle in their angry bones.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I think the physicality of Johnson is bleeding over to other positions in the defense too. I like that he gets physical with the opposing WR’s. We have been too soft for too long and now that is going to change.

Anything on Tren’Davian Dickson visiting over the weekend..?

  • Troyce Lewis says:

If we can continue to make strides with the gameplanning and the development of players on both sides of the ball..not to mention with the talent we’re starting to acquire we will be very nice next season!

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

K what I noticed about the OU defense was tackling, when they caught a 5 yard pass it went for 6 instead of 8 or 9. If they can do that the rest of the season it gives them more opportunities to force turnovers or the offense to have penalties and stop themselves. I liked what I saw last weekend.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Agree 100%. I noticed Dakota Austin grabbed the ankles and never let go until his guy was down every time. I don’t remember him having a missed tackle all game.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

He played pretty well considering the circumstances.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

I thought he played awesome considering the circumstances. And that pick in the endzone was fantastic. One handed at first to grab it.

      • Sarosh Nizami says:

Stoops on Dakota – “Dakota I thought was awesome. He didn’t miss a
tackle out there. All those one on one tackles aren’t easy when they
throw the ball out there with all that space. I thought he really
handled it great. My hat goes off to Dakota.”

        • Fear The Magic says:

Must have frustrated the Tech WRs to have a gnat wrapped around their ankles who wouldnt let go.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

That’s the key. He wraps up and hangs on for dear life. I love the effort.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Me too. I was really concerned when Sanchez went down and he came in but within a few sets of downs I thought “ok this kid is holding up really well”.

          • brainpimp says:

First thing my wife said was “Oh my Gosh haven’t they fed him?”

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Tackling has been MUCH better this season, and specifically, the last few weeks. You hit the nail on the head about the 5 yard passes only going for 5-6, and not 7-9, or more.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah and when OU stops the run they can get off the field which was a huge problem last year

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

The key to defending the spread is stopping the run & limiting YAC. Heck, it is true no matter what the offense throws at you.

    • Jim says:

Yeah, tackling as been night and day since Texas.

  • Bob Edwards says:

K’s comment on the competition is something I have been meaning to comment on. For whatever reason, the new coaches on D seem to have really increased the quality of our backup players. For instance, under Venables, we always seemed to take a big step down when an LB got hurt. There were similar problems at the other positions. Now it seems like an injury is more about getting to see some kid step up and live his dream. Our player development seems to have really improved.

    • EasTex says:

      Absolutely.
No drop off in performance with the backups nor when players were shuffled to different positions.
Got to give credit to Kish, also. Lindley and Shannon have done well filling in for injured LBs.

  • CrimsonNative says:

Excellent article K, I agree that the defense is playing much better and with a sense of unity. It’s amazing what a team can accomplish when they all respect each other whether they are on first or second team. It’s almost like there isn’t a second team the way they all play together. One guy goes down, the next one comes in and puts it all out there and gets the full support of everyone on the field. It’s a great thing to see come together in such a short time.

  • Golfluvr13 says:

Thanks K! Kerry Cooks was one of the coaches I was really excited about when he was hired. His experience and knowledge from an NFL perspective can only help our DB’s get better. I love his attitude, I loved what he did in the first meeting of the year with the DB’s as well. I think his process of always challenging the guys to get better every snap is awesome!

  • Hollerback says:

I hope you are right about he texans loss not mattering.

  • Randy says:

It’s funny how things change but stay the same.. Run the football, tackle well and you have a chance. Boomer Sooner.. And Baker Mayfield is really, really good !

  • Scott says:

I think we have better talent then Baylor. Their system they run benefits less skilled players on offense and when you play teams like LAMAR , you should have good stats. They still gave up 28 points to LAMAR in the first half.

    • EasTex says:

And had trouble putting SMU away until the SMU QB got hurt.

    • Andrew says:

Frankly, I am not worried about our offense scoring points on them. I think it is going to be hard to deal with the speed of the receivers in space. We will see though.
      BOOMER!!!

      • Scott says:

Baylor primarily throws slants , go routes and when their trips they love to do screens. We just need to play smart

        • Andrew says:

I concur, play the assignments and keep your zone coverages. The one thing that scares me the most is CC on go routes. We saw how Washington, and the Number 11 from tech (forgot his name) with speed in space could get bulk yards when we missed a tackle or assignment.

          • Scott says:

Number 11 from taco tech has unreal speed and he is faster then anybody we will see. We cant leave a cushion on their WRs , we need to play tight. Their QB will change their play every time if we leave a cushion.

        • Scott Moore says:

The tackling that we’ve been showing lately on wide receivers limiting yac, see Austin’s performance, will go along way in beating these spread teams.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

To stop Baylor you stop the inside run. Giving up a few big plays is inevitable, but we can hang with them I think.

    • Daryl says:

I think it is a wash in talent. I give our DL and LB’s the edge over their front 7 but there WR’s & OL is better than ours. I would also say that their WR’s have an advantage over our DB’s. Then you add that we are playing them in Waco all that I think give them the edge at this point.

Honestly I am still more afraid of TCU than Baylor only because on both sides the ball Patterson will have his guys in great position and always has them mentally tough. I think if it was possible to go up 14-17pts on Baylor they would begin to crumble but TCU can be down 30 and will always fight until the end.

      • Scott says:

I was at last years OU vs TCU game and we did a really good job containing and stomping their offense. In the 1st quarter TCU came out firing and shocked about everybody in the stadium. But OUs defense settled in and started to dominate them. Our offensive play calling was horrible and we shot ourselves in the foot

      • Fear The Magic says:

I love OUs dline especially because theyre not only good but young as well. The potential is off the charts. That being said I have to disagree with giving OUs Dline the edge over Baylors. Between Andrew Billings and Shawn Oakman they have 2 bonafide first round NFL draft picks.

        • Scott says:

Billings is good but Oakman is trash. Also Billings is hurt

          • Fear The Magic says:

I cant stand Oakman and he might be a bit overhyped but hes still a force and for sure an first round draft pick.
Billings will be back by the OU game.

        • Daryl says:

I think the measurables on Oakman are insane but when I watch games I have yet to see him just takeover. I personally think he is a guy that will get a lot of hype during season but as the draft approaches will fall as people watch the game tapes. Even so you could sway me to we are even.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I believe that Billings is considered the number one D Lineman in the country. Oakman is right up there top 5 im sure. That being said I think OUs depth is insane if the freshman pan out. Two top defensive lines to be sure.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

They have better talent, and/or more experience, at some positions. They start mostly seniors on the oline I think. Coleman and Cannon are studs. Their QB is probably better than ours, or was, before he got hurt. As well as our dline has played recently, I’m not so sure Baylor’s isn’t better.

      • lovethemsooners says:

Yeah I’m not willing to concede that Russell is better than Mayfield.

      • OUwagon says:

I will be curious to see if Baylor sees any drop off with their backup QB. He will be good, but as good? We’ll see, they have an open date and then go on the road to play a very average KSU team.

        • Indy_sooner says:

I think so. Averaged 60 points a game and we’re on their way to do so until they lost him. Only 10 points in the second half. Now when he starts taking 1st team snaps, there may be differences

          • EasTex says:

Just to be clear, Russell got hurt with about 6 minutes left in the 4th qtr. First time this year the baylor offense struggled and probably the first time he had even played in the 4th qtr.

          • Indy_sooner says:

I digress, I thought he went down in the 3rd

          • EasTex says:

I saw the clock on the screen on the many, many, many, many times they showed the play where he got hurt. It surprised me when I saw it was the 4th.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

The injury occurred when Russell pushed forward on a 4-yard run with 5:36 left in the fourth quarter. Postgame X-rays and a CT scan revealed the fracture. He will see a specialist Monday.

            http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13961734/seth-russell-baylor-bears-suffers-strained-neck-win-iowa-state-cyclones

          • Indy_sooner says:

So was it serious? May just be me but I wanted the full power Baylor when we play them to get a good idea of where our DBs are

          • EasTex says:

Not really a vicious hit, certainly not an Oakman type shot.
He was running and lowered his head and shoulder to take a hit, in doing so he actually caused the helmet to helmet contact with the defender.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

When he lowered his head I immediately said something I learned in like 6th grade playing football. First, you have to see what you are tackling so always keep your head up. If you are running with the ball, you have to see where you are going so always keep your head up. Nothing good comes from lowering you head like that.

          • EasTex says:

He approached the hit in kind of a frightened/wimpy fashion, like a QB that isn’t accustomed to contact.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Yes he did. And I do not get that, as much as he runs the ball.

          • Carolina_Sooner says:

Just saw on ESPN.com that his injury will require surgery and he’s done for the season. Poor kid, never like to see anyone get hurt like that. His backup is a true freshman, gotta think there’s going to be some drop off but he has looked good in mop-up duty.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Baker has the ~second highest QBR in the Big 12 with FAR more sacks (20 vs 3 and 5 for Trevone and Seth) yet he’s thrown less interceptions (4 vs 5 and 6) and had a TON of drops. Simply put, Baker has played better under more pressure than any of the others, I would not trade him for any other one based on the #s above, IMO

        http://espn.go.com/college-football/conferences/statistics/player/_/id/4/big-12-conference

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Baylor has great receivers, no doubt, but I think we’re fairly equal across the board.

  • John McCroskey says:

Re: Baylor – Start Byrd and tell him to try to kill receivers until he gets ejected for targeting. That’ll set the kind of fuckin’ tone we’ve needed against Baylor the last 5 years.

    • Daryl says:

I love it but don’t think Byrd can cover well enough or diagnose plays enough to be in position to kill a WR from baylor.

    • Scott says:

They purposely hurt and targeted Sterling Shepard the last time we played in Waco. Their fans showed no respect and thought he was faking and joked about his injury. I will never respect that trash program. They think their all that.

  • KJ1123 says:

I dont want to talk about Baylor tbh….I want to smash Kansas….that’s all the team should be focused on.

    • Gary Robbins says:

So right. One game at a time. But as a fan I am going to call my doctor and request stronger blood pressure medicine for the month of November. Things will be hectic in November..

    • Slim Sooner says:

I’m with you, KJ. Respect every opponent- fear none for the next five weeks.

    • Dustin says:

Both the OL and the DL have been playing a lot better. I caught Dusty on the radio this morning and he said that practice has intensified in the past couple weeks. Is this something that you’ve seen/heard?

      • KJ1123 says:

Yeah it definitely started after the UT game. Guys felt like they were being viewed as soft coming off of that performance. Starting that Tuesday guys were being more aggressive in practice and relly pushing each other. I wish they would run the Oklahoma Drill once a week.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Exactly. The last time I went to a road game for the Sooners, Landry threw a terrible pick and they lost to Missouri. They came out totally lackadaisical that game. I do NOT want to see that again live and in person this week!

    • cheezyq says:

I always get a chuckle at comments like this. I mean, yeah, the TEAM should be focused on KU. And I have no doubt they are. But what does it hurt for fans to look ahead?

      • KJ1123 says:

I don’t have a problem with fans looking ahead to Nov. It’s only natural when you have some big games with national implications coming up. But despite how the team looked the last couple of games, we’re not where we need to be yet for the those teams. I’m hoping to see an absolute shut out/near perfect performance against Kansas and then move on to the next game.

        • Indy_sooner says:

I don’t disagree with this at all. It is natural to want to look ahead, but the team needs to keep fixing issues. I was heartened to see Shepard hard on himself for Neal missing a TD even with a solid block and a drawn flag. That’s the mentality we need from game to game. You can always be better, you can shed blocks better, run better routes… fix what is open every week.

        • cheezyq says:

I disagree. I’m not worried about KU, and even if we crush them and shut them out, you can’t put any stock in this kind of game. It’s not a litmus test of any kind since KU is so bad, and creaming them in a perfect shutout does nothing for us. This is an opportunity to get starters some rest, some 2nd/3rd level guys some playing time, and come out of the game without major injuries. The same goes for ISU, honestly. I think ISU is a threat…but we if we hit them hard in the first half and cruise in the 2nd, that’s good enough. We don’t have a bye week the rest of the season, so these games are good opportunities to get some new guys in the rotation and build depth, and allow some bumps and bruises to heal. If we see mistakes, as long as we win, so be it.

          • KJ1123 says:

Im worried about any team that has nothing to lose. That type of complacent thinking got our asses handed to us by Texas. You go in and kick the sh#@ out of teams youre supposed to beat. Sit the starters? Nope. These guys havent played up their potential. Especially on the offensive line which is weak in a couple spots. This whole team needs game time reps to sharpen that cohesiveness. Teams who get fancy and try to strategize about who they are playing down the line always end up losing games they arent supposed to. Injuries are going to happen regardless. If by half or 3rd quarter were up by a large margin, then get the young guys in…just like its always been.

          • cheezyq says:

You’re reading it wrong. I didn’t say sit the starters, nor did I indicate that the team should be complacent. As I stated with the Iowa State part of my response – we should hit them hard in the first half and cruise in the 2nd.

What I said was that we gain nothing from “shutting out” KU. If KU scores 24, but we still win by 30, no one’s going to give a crap – not anyone that matters anyway. They’ll assume (and they’ll be right) that OU was cruising in an effort to rest players. If we shut them out…who is it going to impress? No one, because it’s KU. So there’s nothing to gain in pitching a shut out.

You want a perfect game. I couldn’t care less about that. I just want a win and our players to come out healthy, and to get some game experience for the backups. KU isn’t Texas. As much as Texas sucks, they can always field talented teams. KU, not so much. If we come out with a shut out, so be it. But that’s not the most important thing.

          • KJ1123 says:

No I read it right, you said you’re not worried about KU and if we shut them out and have a complete game it doesn’t mean that much because they’re a bad team.

I 100% guarantee that the coaches care and will feel that we gain alot from shutting a team out and playing a complete game against a team that statistically we are supposed to beat. Coaches at this level are always striving for that perfection and that should go for the players too.

Why would you think that they would be shutting a team down to impress people? Not to mention people that have nothing to do with the team and what they are trying to accomplish. I agree in the end the most important thing is the win is and coming out unscathed.

KU has good athletes, in fact they’ll see a couple of the best defensive players they’ve seen all season on the line. Should never underestimate any team and should always play them as they’re the #1 team in the country week in and week out.

          • cheezyq says:

LOL, so you misread my post and still insist that you know what I was saying…and then go off in a completely different direction from what I was saying. Time to move on.

          • KJ1123 says:

            yep

  • Dustin says:

When will the Big XII release game times for the 7th?

    • Clint Lenard says:

Didn’t they put up 27 vs Baylor? Seems weird either way, they’re always going to be Iowa State.

      • Bob Edwards says:

“Rhoads would not elaborate other than to say he and Mangino have not been on the same page.” Sound like Rhodes wanted to change something and Mangino disagreed.

        • EasTex says:

I can’t overlook Mangino’s behavior in the past.
Don’t think he is a people person’s type of people.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

No, he isn’t. His son played QB in Olathe and I had a co-worker whose son played with him and they met Mangino and he said he was the biggest a**hole he had ever met.

Were they talking about his physical size compared to attitude, or just his overall demeanor?

          • Golfluvr13 says:

LOL! They were talking about how he acts and he responded to the other parents. He acted like they were all beneath him.

          • Dick Bump says:

I’ve talked with a few who knew him in Norman and they thought he was a great guy.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I totally agree about being KU’s best coach in probably 3 decades. And it could have been that Mangino was in a hurry to get back to film study or something as this was during football season when they met him. And he could have been having a bad day too. LOL

    • Golfluvr13 says:

They are getting rid of the wrong coach! WOW!

      • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, you are like 50’s in Total Offense and 100+ in Total Defense, so you fire the O coach. Yeah.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

I thought he had a good game plan against Baylor. ISU’s starting QB sucked eggs and could not execute. When they put the freshman QB and RB in, they were doing good. Rhoads is trying to keep his job, which I do not believe he will this year.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Sounds like a scapegoat fire to me. Rhoads is a defensive coach so he has to blame the problems on the offense.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Does he forget that he is coaching at ISU? It’s not like they have 4* and 5* kids kicking down the doors to play there. Hello, McFly, anyone home? LOL

          • Bob Edwards says:

The problem is probably more that the fans and administration forget they are ISU. Then they pressure him to win, and he has to try and find a way to save his job.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Yep, and I honestly think Mangino could win there. Look what he did at KU.

    • Recondo says:

Mangino may land in another HC spot this year. He’ll be fine.

  • Skip Sanders says:

Playoff Scenario for Sooners: IF we win out, our ability to make playoffs comes down to Notre Dame AND Stanford MUST both end up with 2 losses. They are only teams which stand in way. (ACC-Clemson, SEC-Bama or LSU or Florida, and Big Ten-Mich St. or Ohio St).

    • Fear The Magic says:

Im just wodering if everyone has one loss and Iowa goes undefeated if they’d even be considered. I dont think theyre a top 5 team but you have to wonder how them being in a major conference could be denied.

    • Sooner4life says:

Lots of football left. Clemson could still lose to FSU. And even if they win, I still feel confident in getting in by beating 3 top 25 teams (2 on the road). I know Notre Dame and Stanford would have a better “loss” but still feel like they would give OU the nod.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Stanford and N. Dame play the last game of the regular season. Stanford plays no one until that time.

    • OUZach says:

IF OU wins out they are in the playoffs.

    • Hunter Frantz says:

If we win out and Clemson wins out as well as ND, then here is what I think. Then the PAC 12 and ND get left out. An undefeated Clemson isn’t getting left out and the BIG 10 is in. But with a possible 3 top 10 or top 15 games in November, no one will overlook OU or any of those last three in November. The only team I can see in the BIG 12 getting left out is OSU with one loss.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

    And BOOM goes the dynamite!

  • KJ1123 says:

I guess it’s official, Seth Russell is out for the season, hope he heals up and gets to play football again.

Anybody else hankering for a little Trench warfare update on how the line has progressed? If JY has a few cycles to spare…? Much appreciated.

    • EasTex says:

I would love to hear from the big guy.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I feel a bit guilty for asking for more, but when we haven’t had our fix in while we tend to get a bit antsy…need fix.

      • OUknowitscomin says:

I’ve been wondering if they haven’t gotten a little push back from OU on trench warfare. Perhaps not liking the detail it can show opposing coaches?? Which would be silly as they disect film themselves

  • Sacramento Sooner says:

Open field tackling has been so much better. Austin with 11 solo tackles alone, wow! Especially for a guy 7th on the depth chart. And Will Johnson blowing up the WR screens. They can’t block him. If we can do that against Baylor, I like our odds a lot more

  • SoonerGray says:

Super K, this is the reason why this is the best Sooner news website on the planet.

How can anyone expect OU d-backs to match up talent wise with Coleman? Not happening. It’s why we need scheme. Man-cover 2, palms, robber 1, et al. MS, KC, Viney and Kish are putting refenders in places to make tackles and compete to stop 1st downs. It’s all l I can ask FROM THE COACHES. Not say I would make the tackles but I hope our players will when Mike calls the right D!!

I love this team. Bunch of ballers. Pressure from the front four was the best I’ve seen in a minute. That’s a trend that must continue.
