Marvin Wilson & Houston Visitors: The Sooners are expecting to host some big time visitors for their on-campus summer camps here in about a month. As TFB told you several weeks ago, standout 2017 DT Marvin Wilson (Episcopal HS, Houston) has long planned a trip to Norman and now it sounds as though a date for said visit is starting to come into focus.

TFB spoke with a coach over at Episcopal, who said the plan is to bring Wilson (and several others, see below) up to Norman for the camps being held on either June 4th or June 8th, a month out plans are still being finalized. Wilson is not expected to be coming alone. Those who are planning to join him include:

Walker Little – I have not confirmed this through Little personally at the time of this post. But the group typically travels together, and I have been told to expect Little also make the trip. But again, we’ve yet to officially confirm this with Little.

Mustapha Muhammad – The 2018 TE out of Missouri City (TX) already holds offers from schools like Alabama, Clemson, LSU, OU and many others.

Malcolm Epps – Another 2018 TE prospect, who is currently committed to Alabama but holds offers from schools like Ohio State, Michigan, Texas and others.

Jaylen Waddle – A 2018 WR and teammate of Wilson’s, Waddle currently holds offers from Ole Miss and Houston. – (Super K)

JK Dobbins: Prior to the commitment of 2017 RB Trey Sermon, TFB had noted there was quite a bit of recent movement with JK Dobbins (La Grange, TX) in terms of where things stood between himself and OU. However now that OU had added that RB commit, TFB checked in with the Ohio State commit to see how such a development might affect his recruitment with any school, not just the Sooners.

“I mean, it doesn’t bother me too much. It would be cool to be the only back, but it doesn’t both me much,” Dobbins shared with TFB. Dobbins also noted that he hasn’t decided on what additional visits he he plans to take at this point. TFB had actually heard some rumors of a possible return trip to Norman, but Dobbins made no mention of it during our conversation.

He did say, however, that the main schools currently standing out for him are “Florida, USC, Penn State, and maybe Notre Dame.” Of those schools, only the Trojans hold a commitment from another 2017 running back. – (Super K)

  • Daryl says:

Sounds to me like Dobbins is out. That really stinks. I would think seeing the way that OU has featured more than one back for quite a few years would appeal to a RB. Still get to showcase your ability, still get to win alot, and not run yourself in the ground so you can have a longer NFL career.

    • SquidGiant says:

I actually think NFL teams would be happy with a guy who didn’t have to carry the full load for his team. Probably will have better long term health.

      • OUBmrSnr72 says:

4th pick in the draft was a guywho “carried the load”, and then some. 2nd RB drafted was “the load” for Bama this year? Unproven commodities are late round picks. Hard to argue OU’s success at recruiting RBs but sharing carries makes it almost impossible to win the Heisman (Reggie Bush is the only one I can think of?) and possibly hurts draft stock (not being a 3 down back)….works for OU but definitely isn’t going to be for every recruit.

        • SquidGiant says:

I’m not saying you can’t be drafted high after carrying the load. I think we saw in the draft that college production isn’t necessarily the biggest factor teams examine. I also don’t think it will hurt Mixon and Perine. It also didn’t hurt a pair of Arkansas backs.

        • SquidGiant says:

Metz, it’s been so long since we’ve landed defensive lineman of that caliber it may give half of the TFBers a heart attack lol.

      • metzker says:

That is both true and sad.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Right? Lol. Our recruiting hasn’t been this hot since ole Romar got in trouble. I’m thinking Stoops put a clamp down on some of our Boosters lol. Maybe that clamp has been loosened? Hmmmm. Or maybe I’ll pretend we are a perfectly clean program and this is all a result of our playoff run last season.

          • metzker says:

A renewed effort is what ill go with, and the playoffs.
We make another run this year then look out.

          • hOUligan says:

Not as many ??? this season and a guy like Bake at QB always gives you an edge. Improved line play is the key and I think OU will have that. Now … just have to stay healthy .. again.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

We were relatively injury free last season (until the biggest game) and that played a MAJOR role for us.

          • hOUligan says:

And THAT is the scary part .. staying relatively injury free in back-to-back seasons is tough. Injuries have derailed OU in the past so many times.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I know, I know ?. It’s terrifying, but I also think the depth we currently have (although young) is better than the last few years. I’ll start freaking out if our secondary starts dropping like flies.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

After watching the press conferences after last signing day you could easily get the sense our coaches were done with the bs and realized what they need to do. If we have another playoff run then seriously, get out of the way, that Schooner will be coming in HOT! I honestly like the way our schedule is. That first month is brutal but if we somehow make it out undefeated then look out. I just don’t see the other Big12 teams having th defense to stop Perine and Mixon along with Baker. Baylors offense will be good but they are switching to a 3/4 cuz their defense has NO big boys upfront and I think we can just ground and pound on them all game and same goes for the Pokes. We got this fellas!

          • DCinAZ says:

Going to the 3-4 two gap style of play always hinders the ability to recruit Dlineman.

          • Matt says:

their 3-4 uses ends lined up at 4i so they are just responsible for the B gaps. The nose is a 2 gapper but the ends are 1 gap.

        And an OU win

        • Fear The Magic says:

          +1

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

We need every big time recruit present for that game. A win of that magnitude would almost guarantee a Boom or two! Even if we lose and it’s a good game with our always great atmosphere that could still go a long ways. Main point, we need those 5 stars at that game!

      • hOUligan says:

I’m with ya. Hopefully, it’s just a start. Look around, see the new digs coming together, interact w/ the coaches on the field while puttin’ in some work then come back and be treated like a freakin’ king on an official.

      • SquidGiant says:

I’d also like him to visit Houston when we smash them.

        • Fear The Magic says:

And then have him watch our cheerleaders beat up their Mayor.

        • hOUligan says:

He’s got an offer so betting he will be there.

          • j l says:

If we are considered the home team(which it sounds like we are according to comments in daily), houston cant host recruits for the game.

Same deal as the RRR, only the “home” team that year can host kids.

          • hOUligan says:

I’m betting Wilson will be there … on whichever sideline is ‘home’ … unless he has ‘eliminated’ both from consideration by then.

          • j l says:

since its his home city, he will probably be there, even if hes not hosted.

If he takes an OU official, it would almost have to be the ohio state game.

          • SoonerSpock says:

With OU hosting Houston in Norman in 2017 it is doubtful OU will be the home team for the game in Houston.

          • j l says:

We dont play houston in 2017. Ohio state, tulane and UTEP are non con games.

  • Scott says:

Sounds like AJ Davis will be the guy OU targets. Sounds good to me , hopefully James Robinson comes to OU as well.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Im good with that at RB. Sermon and AJ and call it a day.

    • hOUligan says:

Sermon and AJ are the combo I’ve coveted since the start. Love his film. And if wants to bring Robinson along… it’s cool.

    • Ryan says:

2 top rb’s from SEC country. Boom. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Finebaum.

  • Ryan says:

Top 100 player/WR D.J. Matthews is gonna visit OU. Currently committed to Florida State.

  • Ryan says:

Poor Dobbins. Doesn’t know RB U when he sees it. Right up the road from him too.

    • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Not to troll, but tOSU did just send a top 5 RB pick to the NFL. I’m sure that didn’t hurt their image any…

      • metzker says:

Yea and now jerry gotta pay alot more.He should have resigned DM and drafted some D.

      • Ryan says:

Understood. But OU may send 2 top 5 rb’s in the next couple of years while AD and Murray are still tearing it up.

        • Stephen says:

          Who?

          • Brent says:

Fournette, McCaffrey, the Georgia kid, etc.

          • Stephen says:

I meant who is going to OU’s two Top-5 running backs. With Fournette, McCaffery, Nick Chubb, Dalvin Cook and a couple others that potentially emerge. It will difficult for Perine to get in the Top 5 and maybe the Top 10. I think he goes in the 1st round but he’ll need to a great year to separate his name from the talent pool and get into those first few picks.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

            I totally agree with this.

        • Birddawg says:

Next years rb draft class is stacked.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Very much so. Unless you’re Leonard Fornette, it would be unwise to come out early next year.

          • Birddawg says:

You would think teams would start re-evaluating the benefit of a good RBs.
Okay QBs are unicorns. Elite are gods.
Denver and Seattle won with stellar D and a running game.
RBs are safe picks. (barring injury/fumbles) They translate better than any other position because the plays never change. Its execution.
            Perine/Mixon are leaving early.
I see both late 1st to 2nd rd. Fournette, Cook go ahead/are protyptical NFL H/W/S
I see 6 .. 3 down backs going into the NFL next year
            Fournette
            Cook
            Mcaffrey
            Perine
            Mixon
            Hood

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

I think that’s fair. I agree that Fornette and Cook are your more prototypical NFL backs, and for good reason. It would seem to me that a RB coming from a two-back system would get more of a look seeing as:
            1. They know how and are willing to share the rock.
            2. They have less wear and tear.
But for whatever reason they only seem to be known for not being a three-down back, but whatever.

And yeah, for all the love that QBs are getting, it has been proven time and again that defense and a running game can win you a Super Bowl. I guess they (DAL) figure as long as you have a line, you can plug any ol’body back there.

          • Birddawg says:

            Yup, all true.
3 down back usually means he can do it all. Run/Catch/Pass pro
O can have 2 (3down) backs. All the merrier.
            Elliot is a tremendous back.
Def on my fantasy football draft board. (and shepard)

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

I appreciate your loyalty, but I think you’re hyperbolizing just a tad.

      • kt-raida says:

And a kicker went in the 2nd round….draft position means nothing.

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

If I’m a kid that wants to make big money in the NFL, then draft position means a lot. I’m not saying his draft position means anything about his future, that was never my point.

          • Cav66 says:

So, your insightful tidbit for this Sooner board is that having a high draft pick at a particular position can help recruiting? Noted.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Oh I get it, that’s sarcasm. I actually made a fairly simple counterpoint to a fairly simple statement. That conversation pretty grew a life of its own after that. That’s a rather common sequence of events for a message board. Thanks for noticing.

          • Cav66 says:

I’m glad you were able to keep up. Your misplaced arrogance and condescending tone are probably better suited for other boards. Your empty assertion that you weren’t trolling appears to be a false front (whorn in sheep’s clothing). You would probably do better sticking to the 5 – 7 crowd to which you are accustomed. I’m sure your genius would be better appreciated in that environment.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

You can ask anybody on this board if I’m a troll. But you won’t, you’ll be just another guy on the internet that thinks he’s clever. I would probably do better sticking to the 5-7 crowd? Man, what a zinger. I have too much respect for the real contributors of this board to lump them all with you. So if those guys feel like I’m trolling, I’ll be more than happy to take my leave.

          • Cav66 says:

Relax Unofficial. If you want to come talk/argue football, who am I to tell you different? I might even enjoy a little back and forth with you. I may have gotten a little overly fired up (note the edit). Glad you respect the regular contributors to this board. I do as well.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Well, my friend, I believe we found what they call “common ground”.

      • Daryl says:

You are right the draft and that is for sure a reason why Dobbins originally picked OSU. But to give some context as to why everyone is talking about Dobbins. There have been some reports that while Dobbins is committed to OSU that he was kind of looking around after they recently got a commitment from another RB. There was rumor that he was very much talking to OU again because of it.

Sense then Sermons has committed and now it appears that the conversations are closed again. That is why everyone is saying things like it sounds like he wants to be somewhere where he is THE GUY.

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

I know the context, I was simply countering the original statement.

      • Clint Lenard says:

To be fair, every Cowboy fan I’ve talked to about this pick (fyi I live in Arlington) hate this pick and said it’s another terrible Jerry-pick.

Kid is good, but he’s not that good…plus, Dobbins also committed to tOSU prior to the draft.

Meanwhile, the best RB in the NFL and one of the top 5 RB’s in the NFL are both OU legacies, with (probably) 2 more first rounders next year.

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Look, what the Cowboys do with Elliot from this point on has nothing to do with my point. In fact, I hope they flop. I hate the Cowboys anyway, I’m a Texans fan. My point is that if I’m Dobbins, seeing Elliot go top 5 makes me a little more resolute about my decision. But then again, I’m not him, and we would probably have different agendas in the first place. However, it stands to reason that the Elliot pick only helped tOSU with soliciting Dobbins. I highly doubt he didn’t notice or felt indifferent about seeing that happen.

      • Randy Keller says:

Let me know when he wins the nfl rushing title. Texas sux

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

I have to be honest man, what you just said had absolutely nothing to do with my point. And I don’t know if you noticed or not, but I haven’t said anything bad about or taken anything away from OU. I just don’t want this to devolve into that sort of conversation. I’m sorry if I took that too seriously, I just don’t want to take any chances.

      • Cav66 says:

Right now, the RB position at OU is stacked with NFL talent. tosu just sent all their NFL RB talent to the Cowboys. The point regarding the path of least resistance is valid.

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

so you’re saying that tOSU’s ability to churn out high draft picks especially at his specific position most likely has nothing to do with him commiting there? I don’t know, that’s a hard sell. I mean, I see why you can say depth at RB is a major deterrent, but if that’s the case, why was he interested in the first place? I think both explanations are possible and probably working in conjunction with one another.

          • Cav66 says:

You really need to try to keep up with your own commentary. What I said was in reaction to your statement “Not to troll, but tOSU did just send a top 5 RB pick to the NFL. I’m sure that didn’t hurt their image any… ”
Most likely not is in reaction to the idea that it didn’t hurt their (tOSU’s) image. Trust me, your statement is not an earth-shattering revelation. For someone not trolling, you seem to be quite eager to stoke arguments. You may want to develop a thicker rawhide if you plan to poke around on Sooner boards,

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Ok, guy. Thanks for the advice.

  • Carl Carter says:

No offense to Jacob Phillips or anything but i would much rather sit back and work with Anthony Hines than see us get a commitment today from Jacob. He is a solid LB but picturing Draper and Hines in the backfield is overwhelming

    • Ryan says:

I think we get Hines as long as he doesn’t drink the burnt orange kool-aid. I saw a new crystal ball to them unfortunately.

      • hOUligan says:

Recently trending towards the whorns but Tyrese Robinson’s older brother has said here Hines is close w/ Tyrese and Draper and have played together on some youth teams. He feels Hines is coming to OU so still giving OU the edge on all of that.

        • T. Rob says:

You know Hines plans on enrolling in spring semester next year. So i expect his decision to come before the beginning of fall football season, that is if isn’t close to 100 offers. He knows where he wants to go, the kid and his dad have been to over 20 different schools on visits. At the end of the day he’ll be a boomer. If not, then it will not hurt us as much due to this class being so strong. Now if we had a top 20 class and lost out on a talent like his that would hurt. But you already have a stud in Levi at ILB he’s good enough to be a star.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Hey I just saw a headline on 247 saying that Tyrese was open to hearing from Texas. Is there any fire to that smoke, or is he rock solid to OU?

          • T. Rob says:

Loll for what? What could they do for him? It’s a mess here in Texas and it’s not looking any brighter for the future. We wouldn’t allow him to get caught up in some coaching and alumni mess. Just class and football and leave all them other distractions back in Texas.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Ok. I figured it was click bait.

      • Zack says:

I think Hines trainer is a former OU athlete. That or he’s just a huge OU fan. Hines has posted some pictures of him working out and his trainer is decked out OU gear.

    • SooperDave says:

If Hines had no interest in the Sooners, I bet the coaches would still be happy signing Phillips and Draper. That being said, Hines would be a huge get, but I will be happy with 2 of the top 10/15 ILBs in the 2017 class.

  • Sam Philbeck says:

I love Dobbins film, but it does sound like he wants to be the main guy instead of a co-guy. Sermon and Davis are a great tandom to get.

  • Neworleanssooner says:

In today’s game everybody needs multiple backs. Sooner fans have seen how Perine and Mixon make each other more effective.

  • BoomerDave says:

FWIW, Mustang, OK DT Deondre Thomas committed to Nebraska over the weekend.

Manziel is just not really trying to make something of himself as a pro or a role model is he. Got family money so all good I guess.

  • Stephen says:

I think we get Rodgers instead of Wilson. Seems he has his heart set on playing in the SEC. Nice of him to bring us other recruits though.

    • metzker says:

Rogers is a major get, suprised we have not heard a peep after calvins visit,i say send in the Kish.

    • Stephen says:

Also Kennedy Brooks overy AJ Davis if I had a choice.

      • Boom says:

        thoughts on Chucka Hubbard?

        • Stephen says:

A more athletic version of Alex Ross. He’s got elite straight line speed like Ross has, however I’d say Hubbard has a better pad level and lateral movement.

          • Boom says:

Ouch, I never saw any Ross in his film. Maybe I will watch again but I thought he had a lot of moves.

          • metzker says:

            you at the spoon?

          • Boom says:

Old days. Been 24 years since I lived in Lubbock. Good memories of that place.

          • Stephen says:

Hubbard is a big time track star, so if he finds a hole he’s going to usually try to out run defenders rather than go around or through them. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have moves but his speed is his main asset.

A running back I really like and that I briefly wrote about is Casey Perkins from Tennessee. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3812098/casey-perkins

He’d be the Perine to Sermon.

      • Ryan says:

Brooks offer list isn’t that impressive. Especially compared to Davis.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I watched both of their hudl’s and liked Kennedys but no way was it as impressive as AJ Davis IMO.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Be careful, although I agree with you, DC may come at you for a comment like that. NO recruits go to the SEC just to go there. It’s all about location only. Wilson is from…….oh wait, never mind.

      • Stephen says:

Eh, I’ve already come to conclusion that if I don’t agree with the most positive outlook on things, most people will attack me for it on here. Wasn’t always like this here, but most people attack those who don’t sunshine pump, mostly for upvotes.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Wilson is a very long shot, can’t deny that, but these are kids and I always hold out hope until they say no.

If your freezer is empty of good free-range angus or bison, might as well grill up some Bevo burgers!

          • Sooner Ray says:

My freezer has never seen empty.

          • Rick says:

An empty freezer is a defrosting freezer!

          • Rick says:

You ever raise any bison Ray?

          • Sooner Ray says:

Not myself but I have a friend that has. About like cattle, just have good fence.

          • Rick says:

Our acreage is surrounded by family property. We are already in trouble with family most of the time, so if something happens….it will happen on family property. When you’re already “IN TROUBLE”, you can’t really get into more trouble. It’s kinda like when your wife is pregnant, she either is or isn’t, not both.

          • soonerbred4ever says:

There isn’t a ranch fence built that will hold a grown bison, if it wants out. I saw a hole in the high fence at the refuge in Lawton that looked like someone drove a truck through it. Ranger over there told me it was a bison bull. I think he was after a bison cow in heat. My two cents, it’s the best meat i have eaten.

          • Sooner Ray says:

They are stout and can be mean. Pipe fence is always recommended. If you get them young you can tame them just like you can cattle. Leave them turned out with little human contact and you will have fun trying to corral them. Some of the best eating for sure. I always thought the hump in the neck was meat. My buddy let me look at one hanging in the freezer before being cut up, it’s all bone and gristle.

          • soonerbred4ever says:

One of my neighbors down the road has a bull that follows him around like a puppy. I don’t know how long he’s had it but I bought my place 14 years ago, and he had it then.

          • Sooner Ray says:

When I was a kid we had a huge Hereford bull that so tame he would let me lay on his back and read a book after school. I always thought that was pretty cool.

          • soonerbred4ever says:

            That is cool. Good memories!

          • Bob Edwards says:

            You only have one freezer?

          • Sooner Ray says:

One for beef, another one for pork, and the one in the kitchen for store bought stuff. πŸ™‚ My fridge in the barn has one but I don’t use it, it’s just for beverage.

          • Rick says:

I have an acreage west of Davis about 10 miles that I have been thinking of raising a couple of bison pups for slaughter. I have absolutely no knowledge, experience or wisdom as to what is entailed in raising bison, but I would think that it should be somewhat like raising cattle.?.?

          • hOUligan says:

Biggest thing is that you’re going to need some serious fencing as bison have no regard for standard 3 strand barbed wire.

They aren’t domesticated in the sense that cows are. They can be very dangerous because of their intelligence and strength. They can kill an El Toro bull with a single strike from their huge heads!

          • Rick says:

Maybe its not a good idea to raise them where cattle are also then?

        • Rick says:

I absolutely refuse, with no uncertainty, to ever taste human, Texsa or otherwise. Having a neighbor who raises longhorn cattle, and who on occasion slaughers and pits one of the young steers for a community gathering, I can guarantee the choice cuts of said critter.

  • T. Rob says:

I was just looking at the 247 top 100 for the 2012 high school class. I noticed that we didn’t have a single player in the top 100 that year. Could that be a reflection of the draft this year? Don’t get me wrong, I love the players that left this year. But to everyone who says stars and ratings in h.s. don’t matter. They kind of do. Of course you’ll have players who blossom in college from a 3 star to pro player and you’ll have 5 star bust every year. But on the average those stars are earned through competition playing and at camps where they are dissected like a pro combine. So you get a clear picture of the who’s who in each class. Looking at the top 100 list of 2012 do you know who dominated the list…Bama, Clemson, LSU, tOSU. And shows up when they’re competitive every year. That’s why this recruiting class and year on the field is so important to get the ball rolling on OU consistently having 3 to 6 players in top 100. Kids want to go to BAMA and tOSU because they have 1st rounders every year, well they’re getting 4 to 6 top 100 players every year. But I like the direction our program is trending, well get there with another BIG12 title and CFP run. That’s all i’m going to bed now. And thanks for the shout out METZ.

In case you haven’t seen the utter meltdown on Twitter. 5* QB Tate Martell has decommitted from Texas A&M. Shortly after, A&M coach let out an onslaught of subtweets (talking about someone with without naming them) about Martell in true Aggie fashion.

  • Jdizzle says:

What that A&M coach found out is that the truth sometimes doesn’t need publicized.
