Levi Draper: As you all know 2017 LB & Oklahoma State commit Levi Draper (Collinsville, OK) made his way to Norman last Saturday for the West Virginia game. The Sooners coaching staff picked a great game for Draper to visit as his childhood idol, Brian Bosworth, was recognized for being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. In fact, Draper wore No. 44 until his ninth grade year because of his affinity for the all-time great and has modeled his playing style after the two-time Butkus winner.

All that said, Draper came away very impressed with Oklahoma. He had the chance to speak with several members of the OU coaching staff and spent a lot of time with defensive coordinator Mike Stoops. It was time that was needed and M.Stoops made the family feel at home on their visit.  Draper said the atmosphere in Norman was second to none, and that he and his family loved every minute of it. And while he remains committed to Ok State, there are still plans to make a few more visits this season. There is even a chance Draper could be in Dallas this weekend, however as Texas is the home team this year it would be as a ‘guest’ of the Longhorns.

Draper is also planning to visit Texas A&M — the Aggies offered Tuesday night — when they play Alabama in a couple weeks. Additionally, he’s also planning to be at the Alabama/LSU game as well. However in between all of that, there is a good chance he will make a trip back down to Norman for another game.

From everything I can gather, things with OU and Draper are finally back on the right track. – (Brandon)

Nikia Jones: Came across the 2018 wide receiver from Wagoner (OK) this past summer that I wanted to make note of here on TFB. At 6’3″ 210-pounds and just a sophomore, Jones already has elite size. He also has great body control and solid hands, routinely making the most out of every target. He has a physicality about him that few wide receivers seem to possess anymore. Jones continually fights for the ball and can go up and grab it at it’s highest point. With coaches at every level seeking out those elusive cover guys, you need wide receivers that can win battles even when covered.

Having said all of that, outside wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons caught wind of the talented receiver and it sounds like Jones now has an open invite to any OU home games. The Sooners seem to be scouring all classes with this new coaching staff, and it’s showing in how aggressive they are in watching film and pursuing players. – (Brandon)

Tramonda Moore: I caught up with 2016 OT/DT Tramonda Moore (Oklahoma City) following his visit to Norman this past weekend. However, our conversation didn’t just center around where things stand with him and the Sooners. We spoke more about the general state of his recruitment.

Moore did share, however, that this most recent visit did solidify OU’s position among his top schools and it sounds as though the Sooners will be there to the end. A couple other schools Moore said are standing out are Oklahoma State and Alabama. Moore also said he’s planning to visit Arizona State in the coming weeks.

A note that was particularly interesting to me, because of my respect for the coach ability of Missouri defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski, was that while most schools are recruiting Moore as an offensive tackle, Kuligowski wants him on the defensive line. Moore doesn’t seem to have a preference either way, but I get the sense that because of Kuligowski’s success in putting defensive linemen in the league that Moore is interested in perhaps visiting the Tigers.

If Moore puts in the work, he has the God given talent of an NFL draft pick on either side of the ball. – (Super K)

I thought Moore didn’t make it to the game this weekend? I read where he overslept.

  • Barry Duren says:

Thanks for the update. The Draper recruitment will be intriguing.

  • metzker says:

    Tuck Fexas BOOMERRRRRRR

  • Matt says:

I’ve heard alot of people calling for Nila and Ty to be benched. It sounds like it could be good but what is Bedenbaugh’s track record with benching underperforming guys? Is that something he pulls the trigger on or does he ride with his guy until that guy is gone?

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

It doesn’t sound good. Do their backups play any better on a consistent basis?

      • Matt says:

going solely off what others have said, it sounds like Alvarez is a better center and Dalton is a better guard

        • Boom says:

Curious, who are these “others”. Thanks

          • Matt says:

posters on this site. The guys on Teddy Lehman’s show share the same feelings.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Most of what I have heard on this site is that Alvarez is not ready for prime time.

          • EasTex says:

He has potential, just not an upgrade at this time, IMHO.

          • Boom says:

Interesting, they want Alvarez at C and he just lost his job at G. I like Alvarez but I don’t see much patience with a new line from the OU faithful. Seems we should be clicking on all cylinders even though we replaced the majority from last year.

          • Bob Edwards says:

No, no, no you don’t understand. Even if we replace five first round draft picks with five walk-on true freshman we are supposed to be just as good. We are Oklahoma. /s

          • EasTex says:

I have seen improvement on the OL and on the team in general.
As long as they continue to improve each game I will be satisfied.
From what I saw in the wvu game, Farniok did better in pass-pro, Alvarez did better in run blocking. Also, I could go back to last year and give numerous examples of Thompson, Shead and Savage getting pwned at different times.

          • Boom says:

Kinda funny to see the back up center get more attention than the back up QB. C is different and there are so many complexities which impact the game. Also, WV was pounding our running lanes with more than we had to block and we didn’t get any help from our FB/TE.

          • EasTex says:

All the while some are opining, the coaches are grading their players in each game…grades we don’t get to see. It should come as no surprise that the coaches are going with who grades the best and performs the best in practice.

          • Boom says:

I like when Dusty does those film segments and points out things people aren’t looking for. Example, he pointed out Dom on his drop which caused the WR to lose his view of the pass. Then it was picked by someone else.

          • soonermusic says:

Stoops made a brief reference to that on the replay show, as well. He didn’t explain, but gave Dom credit for causing the pass to go where it did.

Stoops also gave a nice explanation on the chat show of how they spend several hours grading each player, on each play, looking at his first step, second step, third step, body angle, alignment and several other things including the result of the play, and assigning a grade for each item.

          • OuRedRules says:

Darlington is smart, centers call the blocking schemes, there is a lot more that goes into the center position than physical ability. Perhaps Alvarez is just not ready. Experience.

          • OuRedRules says:

Didn’t Farniok start the Sugar Bowl and play the entire game against Bama? The line played pretty well that night.

          • EasTex says:

No, he played LT in Bedlam and had a decent game. For the Sugar they moved people around and he didn’t start that game.

          • OuRedRules says:

My mistake. You made me watch that game again. Thanks. Those were two pretty good teams. Knight, Shepard, Grissom and Striker were beasts. Great game.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Right. He probably WILL BE better, but he ain’t today. And we gotta win games today not next year.

          • EasTex says:

I was concerned with Alvarez in the spring game. Romar just destroyed him on one series, pushing Alvarez back into the backfield while bending him back from the waist up. Alvarez needs to continue to work on his upper body strength and technique.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, I don’t think most people get that you really don’t want to start freshman and sophomores on the line unless they are really special players. They need a couple of good years building up their body, learning technique, and developing a connection with the other guys on the line. It’s probably the position where the players are least able to get by on raw talent. You need the talent, but you need the training too.

    • Zack says:

I don’t know that nila needs to be benched but I’m driving the boat for benching darlington. While dalton did play well I don’t know that he’s an upgrade because nila has been good when healthy.
I just think farniok and Alvarez deserve to start.

      • EasTex says:

Watching the replay of the wvu game Alvarez got pushed around entirely too much in pass-pro.

      • thill says:

Benching Ty would have large repercussions. He is the brain. I have a feeling that if (God forbid) anything happened to him that everyone would see in a week or 2 how important he is.

        • Zack says:

I think we will see this weekend how much Ty means. He played well and showed a lot of heart against Tennessee so let’s see if he steps up for the big stage moments. If so then I will take back what I’m saying about Ty being inferior. I do like the idea of adding farniok at LG and Alvarez at center.

    • Krys Allen says:

I am starting to question why everyone is so high on Coach B. I know the cupboard was left pretty bare, however I would think that if he was the coach everyone says he is then the guys he has shouldn’t be making the same mistakes over and over. Supposedly WVU d-line is small and agile, yet somehow we still couldn’t get a push on combo blocks, got beat badly on 1v1 and got out leveraged on most occasions. It doesn’t seem like its just a talent issue to me, it seems like our technique and nastiness is severly lacking.

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I’ve mentioned it before, but someone in my family that lives in the Muskogee area has a giant kid that plays defensive tackle in middle school. He’s over 200 lbs already and he’s only 11 years old, but he’s tall and moves well. (When he brought him to a Sooners’ game here a few years ago, opposing fans picked on him because they thought he was in high school, not just an 8 year old.)

  • BoomerDave says:

Do you know if Draper got to meet Boz, and if so, did he get to spend any meaningful time with him.

  • Kelly Gurbcock says:

I think Moore is a bedlam battle to the end, unfortunately, because of his HS coach, I give the nod to LosuR.

  • Golfluvr13 says:

This is priceless. “Highlights” from the shorthorn TCU game!

  • BoomerDave says:

I bet Mike Gundy has to feel like that gal who is about to be dumped by her fiancé. He and Draper got engaged last summer, yet Draper talks to any girl who flirts with him or calls him, and spends every weekend with a different gal and Gundy can’t do anything but watch it all unfold right before his eyes. I love it!!

    • MrBigsby says:

Doesn’t sound like he’s “committed” at all. I guess OSU isn’t in the position as some of the big dogs to ban commitments from taking any visits.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, the OSU commit looks like a “guarantee me a spot” commitment. The one where you commit now to make sure you have a scholly and then see if you can get an upgrade before signing day.

      • Jofield says:

And he wanted to start really low so that he could move UP and not down.

      • hOUligan says:

Or…consider it possibly a sign of his ‘pissedoffness’ that OU wasn’t coming around and what better way to get OU’s attention? Had heard the family is big on OU. But even better, Saban gets into the act in a big way.

    • paganpink says:

I was once sitting in a tiny apartment with some other guys when a biker looking d-bag lunged in the open front door with a gun yelling “my girlfriend is full of goo! My girlfriend is full of goo!” It was a very awkward situation and similar to Mike Gundy’s predicament.

    • Sam Sherwood says:

It pains me that OU is having trouble landing the top Oklahoma players.

    • Drew says:

Even his brother is getting in on the action! That’s gotta hurt.

  • Mark slavin says:

I saw where C Williams the receiver out of texas is committing today and we were in his top 5 do we have a shot at him?

    • Malicong says:

I think he is a heavy TCU lean but I suppose there is always the possibility. Don’t know if OU is still recruiting WR heavy outside of a couple of high profile guys. IMO OU shoud wait on Cleveland if it comes down to available slots.

      • Mark slavin says:

Yeah I saw crystal ball trending tcu so I figured as much I’m with you on T Cleveland

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Question: What does OU have to do this weekend to send Charlie Strong packing? I’m talking more than box score.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Not sure we want him to pack. Who would they go with next? Might be tough sledding for a while either way.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Get a ref to make a horrible call. He might leave in an ambulance.

Otherwise, it will take something by texsa – crazed player; donor meltdown, or a Chablis & finger-food soiree by Austin’s frou-frou elite urging him to run for Mayor.

    • metzker says:

Strong is working with a depthless team because of yellow toof he gets 2 more years id guess

    • Bob Edwards says:

I don’t think it’s up to us. It will depend on how they play. If they come out playing hard but get beat because of lack of talent, that’s a “give the guy a chance to get his own players.” If Malik Jefferson tweets Davonte Lampkin at halftime to see if OU has any more scholly’s then I think Charlie’s goose is cooked. The problem for Strong right now is that it looks like he’s lost the team. He’s got to convince the decision makers that the problem is the dumpster fire Mack lit before he left. He shows that by the team getting beat on talent not on the fact they don’t give a crap.

      • SamSooner says:

Strong has to simplify things more than he thought. I don’t mean the play book. I mean keeping all of the coaches and the players together.

You never really have control of everyone. As long as things appear to be okay, they’ll keep quiet. But the first sign that things are spiraling out of control, the outliers, that were never on board, will start to rip away at the tattered edges of your fabric until it’s in disarray.

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Thanks for this, Bob. Just wondering how much more disappointment the regents take before they close the chapter.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Hmmmm … how about knock his a– down when he runs on to the field to tackle Perine running down the UT sideline for a TD when we’re up 40-0 in the 3rd quarter? It could happen …. something kinda like the following, but replace the ref with a good guy and case with charlie strong.

Is Dontavious Jackson , Mique Juarez , Rashawn Smith taking OV to OU?

  • hOUligan says:

After all, it is ‘beat the hell outa texsa week’ –

  • SamSooner says:

texsa is where they are because of their arrogance: the coaches (past and present), the boosters, the administration, the fan base, and the players. I’m sure the players on the team are great athletes and deserve to play at this level. But if they think that someone is going to get up and give them their seat, they are mistaken.

How can texsa miss on QBs. There’s no way the top QBs in the state would not go to the flag ship program in the state. No way. Why didn’t they? Arrogance: Mack Brown felt he could pick any QB in the state and win. Why? Because the QB is from texsa; they’re all good. Arrogance.

Finally, for me, what has signaled their demise is when Mack Brown named Garrett Gilbert the starting QB following the National Championship game. When I saw that, I had a WTF moment. If I’m a QB, and I’ve been biding my time, waiting for McCoy to graduate, and Mack name Gilbert the starter before Spring practice. I’m deflated. I didn’t get a chance to compete and I’ve lost. That message reverberated in the locker room, I tell ya.

Mack is gone but Strong has to clean this mess up. This, in my opinion, is not fair. That’s life. If Strong was given the time, which he won’t be afforded because of arrogance, he would turn this around.

texsa, because of their arrogance, will fire Strong at the close of the season, setting themselves back for two to three years. I don’t know anything but my time on this earth tells me it will happen.

They want Saban but he’s not the answer, not in the Big XII: this is not his style of football and his record against fast-paced, spread offenses is an indicator he won’t fine success here. But, he’s arrogant: so, maybe he will come which is why texsa will continue to lose.

    • Jofield says:

I think Strong could turn it around IF everyone supported him. I don’t think he can turn it around given that he doesn’t seem to have the support of practically anybody. I think he will eventually be ousted and go somewhere else and be successful again just like he was at L’ville. We’ll see.

    • EasTex says:

Having gone to school there I can assure you the arrogance is institutional and flows down from there.
I was the only Sooner fan at a sports bar with several hundred wHorn fans. My buddy, a Penn St. fan, didn’t care one way or the other he was there for the beer and to watch my back. Me and the wHorn fans enjoyed the banter back and forth, except for one guy. Whenever a play went for Texsa, he would turn around flip me the bird and yell OU sux.
Finally, in the 4th qtr when OU couldn’t make a play and the game was no longer in doubt he turned around and gave me the double bird, yelled OU sux again and of course hundreds joined in yelling the same.
I then stood up and yelled “if OU sux then Darrell Royal sux.” It got very quiet and some one yelled at me that I went too far. I said “Really? Where did DKR play college ball?” It got really quiet then and heard them whispering and could smell burnt brain cells. Finally one voice said, with little confidence, that DKR went to Texsa. I then proudly informed them that he played football at OU and was an AA.
I buzz killed several hundred wHorn fans. In their arrogance they couldn’t fathom that their greatness was due to any one or thing that wasn’t a Texsa creation.
I had them mail me my degree and was glad to be rid of them forever, no way I was going to wear that diaper stain color.

That’s amazing. You would think that they would know the story of someone they worship.

      • soonermusic says:

As I have said many times, a school that has demonstrated respect by going to the extreme of naming it’s football stadium after one of Oklahoma’s all-time great quarterbacks can’t be all bad. 🙂

        • EasTex says:

          LOL!
It’s important to understand they named it after him for what he accomplished there. As a Sooner fan it made me smile when they named it after him and still makes me smile when I get to “clue bat” a wHorn fan with that fact.

          • soonermusic says:

Of course i know why they named it, but still, ya gotta admit, it’s pretty cool. . He did manage to make his mentor rue the day that he left for Austin, for sure.

          • EasTex says:

Yeah, but DKR loved Bud. He wouldn’t have gotten the job without Bud’s letter of endorsement and he was observed crying after he won the game in 1958.

          • soonermusic says:

Way back in the day there was a documentary on the history of the OU Texas rivalry, complete with NFL style deep voice announcer. It was a half hour show and got rerun every season for a while. Included many dramatic phrases. Sort of like: “The horns were on Darrell Royal’s back this time, now, he would go for two…” Included that moment you mention, as well as the Cisco incident, and many other classic scenes.

          • soonermusic says:

After those tears, we will endeavor to forget how many times in a row he continued to win… ugh.

    • EasTex says:

To your comment on Texsa missing out on QBs, sMack Brown had his choice of Tyrone Swoopes or J.T. Barrett. He chose poorly.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

Makes me think of Mack’s love affair with Chris Simms. Here Applewhite was the Big 12 Player of the year and he gets benched for Simms. I am not saying Major would have been an AA or anything but he put them in a lot better postition to win than Chris Simms. That was just odd.

      • SamSooner says:

I agree. I remember thinking the same thing. All Applewhite did was win ball games.

      • soonermusic says:

Applewhite was the perfect example of a guy who wasn’t pro material, but who was a great, great college qb. Had the it factor that won games. He scared me to death, and it seemed like he played for ever, I kept asking if he was an 8th year senior.:-)

(If I recall correctly, Simms got injured and Applewhite took over and won again in the bowl game, I think)

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I don’t know if Strong will necessarily turn it around even given time. He seems to have thrown around a bunch of stuff that was done while he was at other schools and succeeded, while not considering how it all fits together. For example, he made a big deal out of cleaning up the program and establishing his authority coming in. Then he put up a bunch of articles around the locker room that called Texas out for poor performance, and then he personally called them out when they didn’t rip the newspapers down off the wall. In isolation, all of these actions make sense, but not when you add them together.

Visions of Casey Thompson tossing TDs to Nikia Jones for OU in 2020.

    • EasTex says:

I like the idea of Chris Robison tossing deep balls to Tyrie Cleveland in 2020. 🙂

      • MoJoOkie says:

Wishin’ your life away. Lot of livin’ between now and 2020.

        • EasTex says:

Just dreaming, while currently expecting Baker, Shep, Andrews and Perine to have big days this Saturday.

      • Robison is unbelievably talented, but what Casey is doing, as a Sophomore, is unreal. If OU can get Casey on campus, it would be huge. His football IQ, pocket presence & arm strength make him the best Thompson yet, IMO.

        • EasTex says:

I have no reason to doubt that, based on all that I have heard and read.
Having watched Robison several times and his all in for OU attitude, I expect he will have a great career.
Look forward to seeing some tape on Thompson and hope he chooses OU.

        • BoomerDave says:

Thompson’s improvement from last year to this year is amazing. If he can continue on that rate of improvement, the sky is the limit. He is already bigger and stronger that Kendal he’s just a Sophomore. The next 2 years at Southmoore could be something special.

      • Fear The Magic says:

        and that too

  • EasTex says:

What concerns me most about the game with Texsa isn’t that they are a rival and a wounded animal, it is developing a defensive game plan.
Unlike wvu, where we knew what they wanted to do on offense, Texsa doesn’t even know what they want to do one play to the next. Tough to plan for that much uncertainty.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

The flip side of that is as much as they struggled last week, on both sides of the ball, I’d imagine they have to keep the game plan pretty simple for OU. Tough to struggle that much and then radically change the offense/defense in one week.

I bet we get a pretty vanilla game plan, with maybe a couple of trick plays thrown in.

      • metzker says:

Lots of qb runs id think which we all know gives us problems

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Agreed. Maybe some rollouts. Easy, quick passes. Probably some screens. They can’t get too fancy though, b/c they haven’t even been able to run their base stuff well. Add a bunch of cutsie stuff this week, and they will implode even harder than they might already.

      • SamSooner says:

From what I saw, we should be able to run on them very easily.

        • Daryl says:

Sorry but our OL couldn’t run on Akron or Tulsa well. I don’t see us running down texas throat either. We should in theory win game but this OL is not going to lineup in power I and rack 275 on the ground.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Sam, you are talking from your heart and God bless you. But this line is not ready to dominate a game on the ground yet. If you are right, I’ll be back to apologize.

          • SamSooner says:

It has nothing to do with what OU’s line is doing. It has everything to do with texsa DL. There’s no push from there DL. TCU had their way.

      • EasTex says:

That’s the thing, we don’t know what to expect because they don’t know what they are doing and could try just about anything.
As long as the Sooners are fired up and play with great effort we can overcome anything they have for us.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I think we know what they are trying to do, they just haven’t been able to do it. Since Norvell took over playcalling duties, it’s not like they’ve run a bunch of difference stuff. They are running the same stuff they’ve been running since Heard took over, again, just not running it well.

The worst thing you can do with a young team that is struggling is to give them too much to think about. They aren’t going to add a bunch of stuff this week, and if they do, that probably helps OU b/c I would expect them (ut) to struggle even more.

          Stop overthinking this. 🙂

          • EasTex says:

Really, I don’t have a clue what they want to do or are going to do because they are clueless. 🙂

      • hOUligan says:

Maybe they come out in the wishbone.

    • metzker says:

Indeed this game is scary to me

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

We just have to impose our will and we will be all right.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Pretty much we just have to plan to their talent which is currently kind of limited. I don’t think we’re overly concerned about their passing game it’ll probably be focused on Heard and Gray.

    • SamSooner says:

Yep. A play with all kinds of flaws could work on you very easily.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

If I’m guessing as to what UT wants to do offensively, I’d say they want to run the ball and run the clock to shorten the game. With a few timely play action passes tossed in. So, I think we can mostly go defensively with Bond & Striker together which is our best defensive set IMHO. That is comforting to me.

      • SamSooner says:

I’m hoping we attack for the rest of the season. I don’t see any reason why the D can pin its ears back and come after the QB.

      • EasTex says:

That is the defense I am hoping will get the job done. With Texsa being so desperate for a win, there is no telling what they might do.

    • thill says:

Tenn game plan should be close to this one IMO. Similar mobile QB.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

John Blake executed the same offense to perfection in the 90s.

That being said, Texas has some guys and OU had better show up

    • soonermusic says:

Maybe so, but our coaches look at the same game film the texas coaches do, and they generally do a pretty good job of figuring out what the other team is gonna try to do. Both sides think about it pretty much the same way, and our coaches usually play that chess match pretty well, imho.

    • Rick says:

ET, do you think the history with Norvell, might give them some insight as to what kind of O they might want to employ?

      • EasTex says:

I really don’t. Nothing against Jay personally, but I don’t think he is a very good position coach or play caller.

        • Jofield says:

That’s hilarious! But if he has their WRs playing up to par with the way our WRs played last year then they don’t stand a chance.

          • EasTex says:

Knowing how he developed WRs in the past when that was his only job, I can only imagine the lack of preparation they are getting now with him trying to call play.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

The only WR’s he developed here, came in with great abilities. He really only helped them understand routes. I was never impressed with him.

          • Bob Edwards says:

A good number of the WR he ‘developed’ actually transferred into OU. Seems like he let other people develop them and then tried to pick them up on the NCAA equivalent of free agency.

        • Rick says:

History might be proving you right.

    • Stephen Dale says:

Defensively, Texas will blitz almost every down OU has the ball. The blitzes will come from all directions with multiple blitzers all to throw OU off , force delays of game, and generally try to disrupt the Sooner offense ; Offensively, I expect Texas to throw the ball much more than the Horns have shown and run Heard at every opportunity. Also expect Texas to punt seldom and go on 4th down as much as possible. Texas best chance is keep OU off balance . The longer Texas has success, the more UT will dial up the pressure……….at least that’s the way I see it.

      • Bwagnero says:

I also expect a lot of blitzes, but their entire defensive game plan will be designed to keep Baker in the pocket, so secondary blitzes and / or edge containment. The last thing they want to do is flush Mayfield.

  • soonermusic says:

What concerns me most about ut is the talent. As we have seen, it is possilble for a team of players with enough raw talent to get it together on a given Saturday and make some plays. I feel fairly confident about this week, but am not overlooking the fact that they have playmakers who might just decide to play together this week and make it a dangerously close game. If I may borrow a phrase…”I hope I’m wrong.” 🙂

    • SamSooner says:

“I hope I’m wrong,” he-who-must-not-be-named, is that you? LOL!

    • EasTex says:

It isn’t lost on me, the fans, the players or coaches how a noodle armed Texsa QB made some TD throws in 2013.

      • lefty67 says:

He had a couple of TD’s & the pick 6 to Geneo. What really hurt us that day (other than that trainwreck of an offensive gameplan) was both Brown & Gray going for 120+ on the ground. We really missed Phillips & Nelson in that one.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

Agree that anything can happen. But I think our strength is against the run and that Heard isn’t going to beat us with his arm. So, I think they play into our strengths on D, and that we give up 17 or less. Even if everything goes wrong, I see our O scoring lots more than that.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Music … you just know the bad guys are gonna get up for this game. They have 2013’s victory to key off of. Let’s hope the good guys get amp’d up but not too amp’d … respect the rivalry but not too much …. hate (yes, I said that word) the opponent but not too much … puke a few times because of their color but not enough to be sick … but above all FOCUS on their assignments and EXECUTE their plan … and the good guy coaches get the good guy players to be at the right level of INTENSITY to bring serious hurt and pain to the bad guys and not feel any guilt for doing so knowing that if the situation was reversed, the bad guys would do the same to them.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

My thoughts on the RRSO this week.
Texas beat the bad team they played.
Texas hung around and could’ve beat the two average teams they’ve played
Texas got blown out by the two good teams they’ve played.

I think OU is somewhere between average and good right now. OU 38-17

    • Fear The Magic says:

Am I the only one who after reading all of these posts is craving a corn dog?

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

There’s a stat on BON saying that UT’s RRS record is 5 – 2 when UT is not ranked and OU is ranked. BUT, I SAY, UT hasn’t sucked this bad since the 1950s (when OU was tearing up the gridiron), so it’s safe to disregard that stat!!!!

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

I think this Texas team has some talent and could well show up ready to play. OU needs to punch them in the mouth early and take their fight away. And I think they will. Im good with a 3 TD win over the ‘horns

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

My ‘final score’ mojo hasn’t arrived yet … when it does I’ll come back here and post. I’d be very happy with a 3 TD win though.

        • Fear The Magic says:

At this point the outcome is a matter of what attitude we play with. If we go into it thinking that we’ll probably win and just play well enough to win then we have a battle on our hands. If we go in thinking that we’re in for a real dogfight and anything less that 100% effort WILL be a loss then we win going away.

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

Alright, I still have no final score mojo … I’m too pumped to think logically right now, but giving it a try: OU – 37, UT – 21. It’s hard for me to believe we’ll kill them because we don’t match up well on our OL to their DL, and I believe OU’s D will have trouble containing Heard. OU will have a total team effort in Defense, Offense, and Special Teams to win this game.

      • SamSooner says:

TFB 47, it seems to me they are reaching.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

According to Jack Arute, that stat is since 1989.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

That sounds about right. They aren’t as bad as everyone thinks. But if our offense starts clicking the floodgates could open and propel us into the 50’s or 60’s when UT quits on us.

  • Jofield says:

Texsa is a sleeping giant. They have the most experienced punt team in the Big XII… … wait … how is that a good thing?

  • Jofield says:

LR seems to be saving the Wildcat for close games. Wildcat packages are typically not very diverse in the number of plays that a team prepares with. Given that, is it better to unleash the Wildcat in only a small number of (close) games or do you think we should be getting reps for Mixon/Perine in those types of situations in games that are not as close. Stoops and Riley seem to want to save it.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

In the games I’ve watched Texsa, I’ve noticed that the go-to move for Heard, while on the run, is a little pause-and-go. When he straightens up to show that false step, I hope it’s the Striker-on-McCoy Loop-the-loop redux.

    • Perry Dickey says:

My salivary glands were only a little hyperactive. Now you gone and got me with a little foam at the corners of my mouth!

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

And Striker flexes over the battle damage for another iconic Red River photo and desktop background.

  • Matt says:

does anyone know how many linebackers they’re looking to take this class? I mean they already have 3 or 4 right? Youngquist, the kid in NOLA and JM Terry? If Kelly commits will they still take Tyree Horton and someone else?

  • Bill Holder says:

I hope neither the team nor the fans are taking the RRS lightly but I’m afraid they are. Texsa is nowhere near as bad as most are making them out to be.

    • Chad says:

I agree. This game scares me

      • Brad Warren says:

Boo! We will destroy ut. Don’t be scared. We have a real gamer at QB. I’m always a little nervous before every game, but typically moreso with texas, just because of how unpredictable the game can be. However, I’m not worried a bit his yr because we have Mayfield leading us.

      • Slim Sooner says:

“Well, don’t let them know it.” (Big Jake McCandles to little Jake)

      • Bill Holder says:

It seems like I am surprised most years with this game, have been for over 60 yrs. Hold I’m surprised in a good way this year.

    • EasTex says:

I think the team will be fired up and ready to play.
I do, however, think they are at least as bad as they appear.
OU gets up 2 or 3 TDs they will fold like a gas station road map.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Everyone seems to be trying to convince themselves that this is a talented team that has just had some bad luck against good teams. First I think they have always been one of those schools that has highly rated recruiting classes based more on their reputation that the quality of their recruits. Plus they are lacking talent at some key positions.

As far as having bad luck against good teams, they have also had good luck against the bad team they played. They were out played by Rice in almost every aspect of the game but won because of a +4 turnover margin.

Should we take them seriously? Yes, we should take every opponent seriously. But let’s not pretend they are a top ten team except for a couple of bad breaks.

        • EasTex says:

Their absence of talent has been well documented by many an alleged expert.
The fact that the team is in disarray from the AD down to the internecine battles in the locker room and the lack of a cohesive coaching staff tells me they are a hot mess.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

What does it say about little brother? OSwho got a couple of favorable calls and a horrible job by the punter to win against them.

          • Bob Edwards says:

So far they have had close wins against bad teams. If they win at WVU next week, then maybe they are halfway for real. But so far they have done nothing to prove it.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Of course, with Karl Joseph out now, it makes OSwho’s chances better.

          • DrewChubbs says:

I think Pokie State also lost their top tackler this week.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I haven’t heard or seen anything on that.

          • SoonerSpock says:

Absolutely. WVU must run the ball effectively and put major pressure on Rudolph. Otherwise the puke WR’s will do just like the Sooners and eat the Mountaineers alive.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

The kids won’t be able to sympathize with us, but seriously, have you ever tried folding one of those? They NEVER go back in the glove compartment.

        • EasTex says:

          LOL!
That’s what I meant, they look like Hell on a stick when you try and fold them back up.

      • Rick says:

We used to try to use those in the truck, not a good idea, when your load is explosive.

      • Bill Holder says:

        Hope you are right.

    • Perry Dickey says:

Is there any real way to know? What I do know is I will be sorely surprised if I don’t see a fired up focused team Saturday morning.

    • Jofield says:

I think some fans (including me) are making light of Texsa but I can’t imagine that the players and coaches aren’t focused considering what happened in 2013.

      • Perry Dickey says:

If it were any other team the confidence would be overwhelming just looking at the X’s and O’s. When I can overcome my lifelong hatred of all things texsa shorthorns I’m confident also. However if making light of them means having no mercy and applying a monumental beat down while their down, then include me too.

      • SoonerSpock says:

Coaches will be emphasizing the impact that the rivalry has on this game but the players are watching the same film and they see how poorly the whorns have played. With 18-20 year old kids you never know how they are going to react and prepare. One of the real difficulties of coaching is getting underclassmen’s attention and keeping them focused.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Texas has all kinds of talent, I mean they are the ‘horns. They just don’t seem to know how to use it right now.

      • sooner4ever says:

I’m with you. I went to the game last year and even though OU won, it was the worst feeling I’ve ever come away from a game with, when the score was in our favor. Texas won on every ballot except the scorecard. If OU wins like that again this year, we’ll accept it, but there should be no excuse for anything but a dominating performance by the Sooners.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Gotta be ready for the Swoopedozer.

      • EasTex says:

He will still need an OL to block, though.
Tapper, Bond and Striker may all have career days Saturday.

        • Perry Dickey says:

Ha, I was envisioning Alexander letting the air out of that mouth breather Swoops

          • EasTex says:

I like that, scratch what I said. The entire DL and LB groups may all have career days Saturday.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Jordan, K, wasn’t there a possibility of Smallwoods return this week? Any word on if true?

  • Soonerfan24 says:

I love Ceedee Lamb’s attitude. It looks like he takes pride in blocking and making sure he does what’s best for the team

    • Rick says:

Me too, some of his blocks were very physical, crushing blocks.

    • ellisbr says:

I wasn’t all that impressed, I’m pretty sure a couple of those highlights where he was blocking and slung the defender down, isn’t that holding? If the coaches think he’s good then I can’t argue with them, they get paid much more than I do to figure these things out, lol

    • Rick says:

Rivals has him a 4star, he’s long, physical, good blocker, 4.5 speed, would probably do well for Riley. Seems he likes the tall WR’s who can block and catch in this offense.

  • Brien Brown says:

I’m not pessimistic about this game, but i am cautious. Reason being yes Texas has struggled and looked bad, but their have been OSU teams that OU has been clearly better than and they pushed us and even beat us, the reason for the OSU add is well like Bedlam this is a rivalry game. Players get up for these type of games. I am optimistic that coaches and the veteran players are aware of this fact and that we will come ready to play. But I do not see this as a game against just a nobody, even my dislike for Texas won’t allow that, plus I do like Charlie Strong, he is a good coach just needs the time. We want the Big 12 to strive Us, lil bro, Texas, TCU, KSU, and Baylor have to make noise and stay relevant that’s the reality of it all. I know burn me at the stake but i am being real guys, we have to be careful and like the 2000 team just play a game at a time mind your business and let other teams do them and we take care of business it will be a great year but one game one focus at a time, no big heads, no ego, no getting complacent. Otherwise BOOMER freaking SOONER

    • EasTex says:

The players this season are incredibly focused using last year’s record as motivation.
The schedule also makes it easier for them to remain focused, eight more weeks in a row of conference games, step by step to the championship.

    • Perry Dickey says:

Its quite fine and relevant to want the Big XII/Texas to do well any other week of the year. I’m angry TCU got to do it first but wouldn’t bother me one bit to out do their beatdown last week. The stain of a burnt orange mudhole in the center of the Cotton Bowl has a lasting effect on all that is Oklahoma!

      • EasTex says:

The frogs warmed up Texsa for us last week and are warming up KSU for us next week.
        Odd, that.

        • Perry Dickey says:

Yes. I always regard a kick in the gut stays with a player harder and longer than it does me as a fan. If anyone thinks these guys aren’t aware of how they felt coming in at #4 and TCU beating us AFTER A BYE last year and how they have to take care of business one week at a time. Well, think harder.

        • Rick says:

Speaking of Odd, I read somewhere earlier in the week, someone mentioned the fact that OU scored 44 points on the day that the Boz(44) was honored.

    • Rick says:

The early week interviews with the team leaders all said they were prepairing for Texsa like they were 5-0 and ranked in the top 10. I don’t think they are overlooking them.

  • Brent says:

Man, Karl Joseph out for the year is a terrible break for WVU. Thought he was going to rack up a ton of awards at the end of the year. I see WVU going into a tailspin now.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Butch Jones is on the way out. He’ll probably go scorched earth on Tennessee

      • Perry Dickey says:

Oh man, I hope there wasn’t a surprise at the end cause there’s a reason this guy ain’t on the radio ,s!

        • EasTex says:

You should see his video made as he was leaving the OU game. LOL!

          • SamSooner says:

He’s a nut job. He’s not the kind of person you can reason with. Win and get the hell out of there, if you’re visiting Tennessee.

I had a chance to go to this game. No thank you. I’ll pass. Tennessee and West Virginia are two stadium I will never go to.

I went to WV to see Auburn play a few years back. My best friend is an Auburn fan. He drove up from Virginia and we went to the game. I took my son, Max. He was about 7, maybe 8. I wore an Auburn hat, to support my buddy. He’s did the same for me when attending an OU game. I’ve never received so many crossed looks. I remember asking myself “What have I done?” I was afraid for Max.

Auburn won but we beat it out of there. That was enough for me. I turned down tickets every year they’ve played in Morgantown. I will never go there again.

          • EasTex says:

They are not very nice people and get down right dangerous when they can’t justify setting the furniture on fire.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I had a similar experience at Mizzou when we beat them on the fake field goal at end of game. Told myself I’m never going back to that dark and disturbing place again (at night). Saw a guy slam a girl head first into concrete slab because she was smack talking. Freakin’ low lifes up there.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I’ve been to a couple of games there and have always been treated well. KSU has been decent, but once the drunk kids get going it is best to move on. KU has not been too bad. But when OU played KU at Arrowhead and I took my kids there I was embarrassed at how the KU fans acted. They are the worst (especially in basketball season)

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yeah, KU campus game was very nice. I got treated to some awesome single malt scotch & fine cigars at a KU tailgate. Great fans who admitted they just wait for BB season. 🙂 And I too went to Arrowhead when OU/KU played. The OU fans were drinking during the game and threw quite a few beers on the field when the refs called off an interception by our guys. I was ashamed at how they acted too. But we had an awesome tailgating experience at Arrowhead. Talk about the best smelling parking lot ever! BBQ was smoking all over. Good stuff. Burp.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I’ll be at the KU game this year. LOL

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Not sure I’d call it a “game”. Smackdown or whoopa$$ might be better terms.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Practice session for OU? I’m going with my best friend who is a huge KU fan and every time I bring up that I’m going to the OU game, he says KU will be there too and we both just laugh.

          • Drew says:

Same here. Know of any good places to eat?

          • Golfluvr13 says:

We are staying in Topeka for the game (friends and relatives there), and I have not been in Lawrence in a long time. However, the friends we are going with go up there for basketball games all the time. I will ask them this weekend about places to eat and let you know.

          • Drew says:

Thanks man, appreciate it. I live in St. Louis right now, so OU games are hard to catch, and it came down to Kansas or Kansas St. this year. But $17 tickets are hard to beat.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

You bet! I got my tickets the day they went on sale. I told my wife we should have waited so they were cheaper, but she said they are great seats. I cannot complain. I’ll get back to you next week on places to around there.

          • SamSooner says:

You know this team has not played a complete game yet, I have not seen this take the position of being satisfied. I personally think this team is using every game to prepare for Baylor. I feel their is unsatisfied still underestimating this UT no way in hell especially if your senior captains stop’s and discuss a loss from 2yrs ago, last year was nothing to brag about just like this season so far. This team is on a mmission and I will be much happier when sooner fans start giving this confidence like they did at Tennessee not like the Tulsa game. I have seen this team come out ask for support like last week that shouldn’t even be. My hope is that people would hate to see us coming as a fan base, because sooner fans always took over the house and let our player’s know that it was time for them to get to work, this team just love their fans. WHY? our fan’s are extremely knowledgeable about this team WE ARE THERE IS ONLY ONE OKLAHOMA “BOOMER”

Trusooner, the mark of a champion knows what perfection is, can identify if they’ve achieved perfection, attains perfection. Once they’ve attain perfection, the champion will redefine perfection.

I think you hit it perfectly: this team is using every week to get ready for Baylor. Baylor, not tOSU, Bama, Georgia, name your school, is the measuring stick. Beat Baylor and the championship game is a cake walk. As much as I hate them, Baylor presents challenges no one else does and no one is doing what Baylor does. Everything else is easy to prepare for.

    • DrewChubbs says:

That’s one of the things I like best about this team. It’s not just showing up on game day and boasting, “I’m an OU Sooner!” It’s their workman-like mentality and performances. You can sense these guys are hungry. You can perceptibly see and feel it when they know they need to dig deep and make something happen. We witnessed it in the final 10 minutes against Tennessee, and we witnessed it again in the 3rd quarter of the WVU game. We see they are far from perfect. So do they, and the coaching staff too. The fact that they haven’t been complacent and that they still manage to find more in the tank when push comes to shove separates them from a lot of talented Sooner squads from the last several years. My heart has trouble pumping right in these ugly, gritty games (all the fried foods I eat contribute to that as well), but I love seeing these guys resolve themselves, and then willing themselves to make it happen. Once they learn to do that from the get-go, instead of it being a reaction, this team will be great.

2 things I will admit, I haven’t been keeping up with recruiting as much this year and stars don’t mean everything. However, why are we again struggling to get highly touted offensive linemen this year? Please correct me if I am totally off on this.

    • Fear The Magic says:

We do seem to be struggling to get highly touted offensive linemen so far this year but Id hardly say “again” Last years OLine class was easily one of the best in the country.

  • Malicong says:

Just ran across this news about Karl Joseph. Too bad, guy is a gamer. Only player I have ever seen knock Perine back (even though Perine was off balance and leaning slightly backward and the hit was not from head on it was still a solid pop)

  • BobBarker69 says:

Can anyone tell me what the little table/seating areas are in the new plan? And what purpose they serve?

Surely we would rather have more actual seating that these little picnic areas.

    • Herman Bubbert says:

They’re struggling to pull together sellouts late week of every home game, and season ticket prices are increasing astronomically. Why in the world would we want more seating?

      • jimintexas says:

I believe you will find that, with the chair backs throughout the stadium there are not that many added seats.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

Not adding seats. Not having chair backs throughout the stadium.

          • SoonerSpock says:

The south end expansion will add about 2,000 seat but when they add the guard rail down each aisle in the stadium as is dictated by ADA prior to 2018 those 2,000 seats will be lost. I was told each aisle will lose 2 seats on each row of the aisle.

After the completion of phase 3 of the stadium expansion the seating capacity will be approximately the same as it is now.

      • BobBarker69 says:

I don’t know where you’re getting this. But I think your facts are wrong.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

About which part? Because I’ve heard/seen the same thing.

WVU tickets were for sale a full 10-14 days before the game for as low as $35/ticket. Season ticket holders couldn’t give tickets away to one of our better home games of the year.

          • Maverick says:

This had more to do with an 11am kickoff than it did anything else. And WVU fans didn’t show up at all. There was a huge hole in the South End Zone where they should be, so some of those tickets might have been returned by them.

    • SamSooner says:

I think Castiglione said they wanted to focus on the fan experience. They weren’t interested in having more seats. I can buy that. I’d much rather have a reason to want to come to the stadium.

I think what you’ll see when we go to tOSU in 2017 what that stadium is like. I know we complain about the Noon kick-off times but , Columbus, Ohio is always rocking, no matter what time the game is scheduled.

      • Jed says:

I believe in most northern schools Al Kohol ramps up the game atmosphere.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

Particularly when the weather turns cold by late october. A little medicinal for the blood circulation, don’t you know.

      • BobBarker69 says:

Fans want to have a picnic during the game?? Our fans pretty much stand the whole time, not much casual watching going on here.

  • Zack says:

Anyone have a good feeling about tyrie Cleveland? He’s the one player I want most of our remaining targets. I’m considering kelly a huge lean and would be shocked if he ends up elsewhere.

    • Rick says:

His twitter page is pretty much #OUDNA today, and he’s getting a lot of love from fans here.

  • BobBarker69 says:

Sorry to blow up this thread with these, but I guess I never paid much attention to this.

Look at the rendering in the bottom middle. Are they really re-doing the press box as part of this too? Looks pretty good, but I haven’t heard them ever mention it.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

From my understanding that redoing the press box and media center is a big deal in regards of the stadium upgrades. I believe it got “dibs” as in most important stadium upgrade/expansion. Should be pretty cool and really great for the university.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

I’m much more concerned about what they do for the fans and players than the media.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Estimated to happen in about 3 years. We’ll see.

  • Rick says:

    Ty Darlington

“As a senior, as a captain, I think we have to be cognizant of that, of the tendency to let up, the tendency to start looking at the rankings, to start looking at the stats,” said starting center Ty Darlington. “We’ve got so much room for improvement and I can assure you that’s already been addressed by the leadership and will be addressed with the entire group.

“There won’t be any sort of letting up or starting to feel ourselves a little bit. We’re hungry.”

  • Slim Sooner says:

Good OP today. Several posters sharing fears and concerns about us beating Texsa, even though they truly suck on so many levels all the time and especially now. I don’t think our coaches or players could ever take this game lightly considering 2013 is being brought up ad nauseum every two seconds by someone in the media. Some poor whorns even have slight hope. This isn’t 2013. I believe these Sooners are on a mission: just win, one game at a time!

    • Rick says:

Texsa sucked even when they were good.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Still, no matter how bad the shorthorns double-suck this year, it is one of the biggest rivalry games in all of sports. No matter how bad the shorthorns appear on paper, they will come to play.

      • Slim Sooner says:

So will we. You’re probably right, though. I just believe this year we will dominate.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

I believe you are right based on player interviews this week and coach interviews this week. They are pure 100% business and thinking about one thing and one thing only. The shorthorns. I love the teams attitude this year!

crazy to think with all the hype going in to the season for this season and durant playing with the new guys for the first time and we can’t watch it. if i had to guess MLB playoffs playing hard ball with the NBA might have something to do with it but who knows.

    • ALar03 says:

Yea i saw some highlights from the scrimmage and came away impressed with, though limited, Cam Peyton and am anxious to see him run the team a little with the second group

      • KJ1123 says:

Oh damn! That’s not good. I think Luck is planning on playing this week so you should be good either way. I hope Sammy has an epic shootout against Brees this week.

        • BleedCrimson says:

I do also. Would love to see him to give me a reason to start him even if Luck is playing. 🙂

  • DrewChubbs says:

I accidentally caught an episode of College Football Live on EsecPN tonight. They had a pretty good bit on Sterling Shepard and his dad, Derrick. It’s the story we all know about, but it had some good footage of Derrick, as well as of Sterling before his Sooner career began. It was a real onion peeler when they showed him wearing his dad’s jersey when they honored the 85 championship team. It wasn’t anything we don’t already know, but it really shows just how special Sterling and his Dad are, and also what kind of man Coach Bob is.

    • hOUligan says:

I caught that while at the gym. I was standing there watching that piece with tears running down my cheeks. Great story. Like everyone says, Bob didn’t know if the that 6 year old kid would ever play sports, much less football. It was just the right thing to do, taking him under the Sooners’ collective wing.

      • DrewChubbs says:

It was the right thing, and it really seems to have worked out for both of them, without even considering football. As a fan, i want OU to win another National Championship. It will happen eventually. But can you imagine what a bookend it would make in Sterling’s life? How that would cement his legacy along side his father’s? When people talk about OUDNA, how could something like this not be the best example? I want #8 more for this than I do for any other reason. I’m just caught up in the feels right now.
