Open Post | Weekend, Apr. 22nd – 24th

Spring Evaluation: The OU staff began the spring evaluation period this past week and while many schools haven’t actually started spring ball yet, hence many of these visits were as much about public relations as anything. The Oklahoma staff getting face time with various high school coaches around the country to spread that OU brand.

That said, several OU coaches did make some notable visits this week to players like Trey Sermon, JK Dobbins, Chuck Filiaga (though he was not at school that day), Hunter Bryant (H-back that the Sooners offered a day later), Ceedee Lamb and a few others.

Next week a number of high schools will begin spring ball, so it should be an even more intense week of both visits and evaluations. To that point, a couple notable visits already set for next week are:

Jacob Phillips – 2017 LB Jacob Phillips (Nasvhille, TN) visited Oklahoma during spring ball and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Phillips let TFB know Oklahoma is definitely in his group of top schools, and that Tim Kish is expected to stop by next week.

Nelson Mbanasor – You probably recognize the last name as Mbanasor is the younger brother of current OU cornerback, PJ Mbanasor. The younger Mbanasor is a 2017 DE who really does look the part of someone that could play in OU’s front (B-gap player that can play multiple techniques). Mbanasor currently holds offers from schools like Houston, SMU, North Texas and others. – (Super K)

JK Dobbins: As we mentioned yesterday, OU running backs coach Jay Boulware stopped by to visit 2017 RB & Ohio State commit JK Dobbins (La Grange, TX). Regarding said visit, Dobbins told TFB “it was great seeing him.”

Prior to committing to the Buckeyes, Dobbins had visited OU on multiple occasions. Many even believed the Sooners likely led for Dobbins, which only made his commitment to Ohio State all the more surprising. Clearly the OU staff has not abandoned their recruitment of Dobbins, who it would appear is at least still listening, but how serious he is about OU remains to be seen. – (Super K & Andrew)

You punk. I was about to type the same thing.

      • SWoods says:

        LOL sorry Sam.

        • SamSooner says:

Have you had a chance to read the material?

          • SWoods says:

Yessir I have. Been meaning to contact you about it. I’ve been away with work. Have you been published?

          • SamSooner says:

            Not yet. Trying to, though.

          • SWoods says:

Man, keep trying. I don’t think you’re that far off. Really, all you need is one break.

          • SamSooner says:

SW, thanks! Those are kind words. I really do believe I am close. I have to keep working at it.

          • SWoods says:

I don’t write much, but I do read a lot. My brother has been published. Something I’ve learned from him is you shouldn’t be worrying about getting published when you could be writing. The publishing will take care of itself.

          • SamSooner says:

I try to spend as much time as I can. It allows me to get connected with my thoughts. I absolutely love writing.

          • SamSooner says:

Where could I find your brother’s material?

          • SWoods says:

Sam, honestly unless you live in Louisiana its kind of difficult to find his stuff. You can find it on Amazon under James Woods. However I would imagine I can get him to send you some stuff. The guy I really recommend though is a great family friend of ours. His name is William Bernhardt. I actually had him as a college professor a few years back. He has his own website http://www.williambernhardt.com. I would definitely check it out. He is a great writer.

          • SamSooner says:

SW, I appreciate the offer. As your brother’s material is published, I’d prefer to buy it. He should not give away his creative labor. I will search for it and make the purchase. I have about five books lined up right now and I’ll add it to my list to read.

I will check out the professor’s website.

            Thanks for sharing.

          • SWoods says:

Sounds good buddy, I hope you can find something that you like!

  • KJ1123 says:

Wouldn’t hurt if we beat tOSU. If Samaje declares after the season that could be another enticing factor for JK.

    • Birddawg says:

tOSU game is huge on so many levels.

      • Ura Hogg says:

Really hate to mention this, but due to last year’s result, the Texsa game is also even bigger than usual for OU.
Winning the Big 12 outright was great and making the CFP was OUtstanding, but it’s past time to put the shorthorns back in their place.
Also it would help swing some recruits OU’s way from south of the Red River.

  • RocketCitySooner says:

I posted this in the Sooner News thread but it deserves a place here too.

APRIL 22, 1889: The Oklahoma Land Rush opens at noon as some 50,000 people scramble to stake a claim within the two million acres of of unassigned land offered under the terms of the 1862 Homestead Act. Settlers known as “Boomers” had been arriving in the region for more than a decade in defiance of federal law and were routinely removed, and after continuing pressure Congress finally opened up a portion of what was known as the western Indian territory for legal settlement. Those enterprising few who snuck in before the official start became known as “Sooners,” a term later adopted as the state motto. By the end of that first day, Oklahoma City had a population of some 10,000 people. The remaining Indian-held lands were opened to settlement by 1893, and in 1907 Oklahoma became the 46th state.

    • hOUligan says:

At the risk of being ‘not PC’, was reading about the movement underway on campus by NAs, mostly, to banish use of the terms ‘Boomer’, ‘Sooner’ and ‘Boomer Sooner’. That the continued usage of the terms celebrates what was a dark time for NA people and is hurtful. Not seeing how not yelling ‘Boomer Sooner’ is going to help change anything. It’s a historical fact. Oklahoma was Indian land but so was the rest of America.

      • AgedBill says:

It was not Indian land at the time of the land runs. The Indian land holdings changed as a result of the Civil War.

      • RocketCitySooner says:

They did get rid of “Little Red”.

      • paganpink says:

Jackson sent them here in the relocation called the Trail of Tears. Much of that land set aside for native Americans remains. Almost none of the land opened during the land runs was Indian lands although the whole of Oklahoma was called Indian Territory, of course, before it became a state. The few complaining about Boomer Sooner have no knowledge of history and are part of the perpetually outraged crowd so wrong about everything.

      • JB says:

Well, the “stolen” land some complain about was “stolen” from tribe to tribe before settlers came. So it appears that the tradition was well-established.

As for the PC crowd, I say this: BOOMER SOONER!!!

    • jettrink says:

My granddad drove the family wagon behind his father and uncle as they rode off to claim land down around Chickasha. He was nine years old. (Parenthetically, he also played with the boys of Frank James after Frank was let out of prison. Granddad said all Frank James had to do to quiet the boys down was come on the porch and point.)

  • KJ1123 says:

I saw a Mock Draft that had Sterling at 59. KC is an interesting landing spot for him. Alex Smith is a check down machine with the majority of his passes inside 30 or 40. I could see Sterling getting alot of action if he goes there.

  • Scott says:

So are RB options are , JK Dobbins , Trey Sermon ( OU Leads ) , AJ Davis ( OU Leads ) , Cam Akers. I really like our RB options this year.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I’ll be fine with any of those young men. I personally want Trey, but the smaller shiftier guy in Dobbins would certainly go well with the bigger more physical runner in Anderson.

      • Scott says:

Well we are taking two RB’s so we could take both JK & Trey. I want Trey & AJ , also AJ & James Robinson want to play together in College.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Robinson is a total STUD. He’s the kind of player that would make a massive impact to our roster.

          • Scott says:

He reminds me of Sammy Watkins.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

He’s more like Julio Jones, the kid is huge already lol.

          • Scott says:

We definitely need a WR like him on this roster.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

He’s got first round talent written all over him. All we need is a couple guys from the south east to commit and open that pipeline. I wish Bandy would get on their asses and recruit publicly a little more lol

          • Scott says:

James is first round talent , we need to get the whole SoonerSquad on those south east kids.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I think recruiting will be relatively slow until the season kicks back up. That first month could be huge. Three big wins against teams that all finished with 10 or more wins last year would get recruiting rolling even more than it is. These summer camps will be so different from years past; we actually have ballers committed who can recruit their butts off while the camps are taking place.

          • Scott says:

The Opening will be huge for OU. We have a lot guys who got invited and they can help spread the OU brand plus they can recruit some of those top prospects.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

For sure. Another playoff run would be the icing on the cake for our class. We would close out so strong and reap the rewards with the 18 kids as well. I’m so ready to get back to the teams we had in the early 2000’s. Had we given up 300 yards rushing back then all of us would have lost our minds. It seems to happen two to three times a year now. It’s unbelievable, really.

          • Ura Hogg says:

More beef on D should bring down those rushing yardage totals.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Without a doubt. I want walker and gallimore at the end positions with big ole Romar and Overton at the nose. That’s an NFL front that’s extremely athletic for how big they are.

          • Ura Hogg says:

            Sounds good to me.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

            My thoughts exactly

        • cush creekmont says:

Good point about Mr. Robinson. He and his RB compatriot are two that would make FINE Sooners.

        • hOUligan says:

What a major coup if OU could bring in both AJ and Robinson. It’s almost not fair that some hs team is having to face both of those guys on the same night.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I think AJ Davis would be perfect in Lincolns offense.

      • metzker says:

        ruo!

        • cush creekmont says:

Watch out Metz – If I don’t get after you, I will sick Dustin on ya’. 🙂

          • SamSooner says:

Metz shouldn’t type any word that starts with the letter “O”.

          • cush creekmont says:

A fair point, other than OU, of course.

          • SamSooner says:

He should spell it out. The “U” is a few keys down from the “P”, which is kind of risky for a guy on probation.

          • Bob Edwards says:

            or tUO

          • cush creekmont says:

Nice! “ONLY ONE” might be safe for Metz too.

          • SamSooner says:

            Bob, how are today, friend?

          • Bob Edwards says:

Busy. My wife is in the hospital again. Trying to find an apartment to rent so that we can move into town closer to the hospitals and in a space we don’t have to take care. Then I need to sell the house.

But other than that, think are good.

          • cush creekmont says:

Tough situation Bob – I hope things improve for both of you! I hate to see you sell that view you showed us.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well it’s going to have to be sold. It’s forty-five minutes from where I work and my wife’s health is so up and down she can’t do much to take care of it and some of the time can’t be left alone.

          • cush creekmont says:

Take care of her and yourself Bob. Know that all of us TFBers are wishing you both the best!

          • SamSooner says:

Bob, I’m sorry to hear that about your wife. I’ll pray for you and your wife. I know that it seems like you can’t catch a break sometimes. Hang in there and reach out if you need anything.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Thanks Sam. Modern medicine has no cure for her problems. Only the Great Physician can cure her.

          • SamSooner says:

Bob, your friends at TFB are here for you. I don’t know how deep this hurts you. I only know it hurts. What I say might be awkward or inadequate. But I’m ready to help. Please let me know if I can help.

          • ColoradoSooner says:

Sorry Bob. Throwing prayers your way.

          • hOUligan says:

So very sorry to hear that, Bob. And from the photo you shared, your home in the hills is beautiful, which is very healing in and of itself. Prayers for you and your wife. And hope a daily foray into the TFB world can ease your worries and bring a smile on occasion.

          • SamSooner says:

            Well said, hOUligan.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

I’m sorry as well. Grant is lovely and we enjoyed living there too but there comes a time when more supporting infrastructure is required. Wish you well. What apartments are you looking at?

            Dustin would be proud.

          • metzker says:

It’s a damn poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word. Andrew Johnson

          • SamSooner says:

            ROTFLMAO!!!

You are comedy relief on a stick.

          • metzker says:

            Got it from Bob yesterday.

          • cush creekmont says:

            Excellent source!

          • hOUligan says:

I was just going to type that but decided to see if you’d fess up but for the record … it was a quote by Andrew Jackson, OUR 7th president.

          • metzker says:

            OUr

          • cush creekmont says:

Nope – hOUligan. You have internet inference. Jackson did remark on grammar and spelling, but Metz quote is correct.

          • hOUligan says:

I stand corrected, Sir. Thank you.

          • cush creekmont says:

Actually, I think no one really knows the origin –

Here is a scholarly commentary about the whole thing

“This saying and other similar variations have been attributed to numerous people, as well as appearing in print as an anonymous witticism. The Yale Book of Quotations traces its print origins back to at least 1880;3 Ralph Keyes, in The Quote Verifier, concludes that it is simply an “old gag.”

          • hOUligan says:

So they attribute the quote to an old aTm grad??

          • cush creekmont says:

I think the only known, accurate quote from an Aggie grad is:

            “texsa SUCKS!”

          • Bob Edwards says:

This is probably the correct answer. However, it is important to note that Engrish spelling really didn’t start being standardized until the nineteenth century.

          • cush creekmont says:

Yes! And the type setters and scripting made it worse. In the 18th century, “f” and “s” were almost interchangeable.

That said – I have “crawling skin” when I read should “of” or could “of” on these otherwise wonderful threads.

          • Bob Edwards says:

As Internet watering holes go this one actually has people with a decent mastery of the English language. I try to not make too big a deal of it because I would prefer people to be able to post without fear of being chastised. I know that I often post a quick comment from work and don’t always have time to check for the occasional substitution of similar sounding words. I type what I hear in my head. Well most of it. Not those “other” voices.

          • metzker says:

Glad someones has my back at least sometimes.

          • hOUligan says:

Hey…I’ve had your back. Had looked up the quote yesterday after Bob posted and found a site erroneously attributing said quote to Andrew Jackson. Can’t always trust the danged inter web, neither.

            quotationsbook.com/quote/26467

          • Bob Edwards says:

Do they have your back or are they hiding behind you in case there is a spray of bullets?

          • metzker says:

            I will go with hiding!

          • Bob Edwards says:

Man my typing is awful today. A one sentence comment that needed two edits to fix typos.

          • metzker says:

I new what you ment… see what i did there…their.

          • cush creekmont says:

U mean gnu what he mint, right?

          • cush creekmont says:

With the penetrating power of some, best to stand behind, the guy behind the guy, behind Metz 🙂

          • Bob Edwards says:

It’s variously attributed. I have heard Jackson also, but when I looked it up I found Johnson. Of course I got it off the Internet so who knows.

          • hOUligan says:

… that got dropped in the dirt. LoL

          • cush creekmont says:

Perhaps quoting from an impeached president is not the top authority to consider. 🙂

          • Drew says:

Jackson was never impeached, just fyi.

          • cush creekmont says:

Yes he was! He was NOT convicted in the Senate (by one vote).

          • metzker says:

            Was not!

          • cush creekmont says:

You say not “him peached.” I say him was impeached 🙂

          • metzker says:

Uz guys are craking me down

          • Drew says:

Andrew JOHNson was impeached, but JACKson never was.

Source: First several links on Bing.

          • cush creekmont says:

True. We were talking of JOHNSON after Metz attribution of the saying to him. I mis-read your writing of “Jackson” assuming Johnson since that was of whom we had been speaking.

          • metzker says:

When you type JOHNSON in caps it reminds me….of well myself!

          • cush creekmont says:

Well, you better watch out for Johnson this weekend.

          • Oscar says:

            LOL

          • Drew says:

Sorry then. Your reply was to Metz, but Metz never mentioned Johnson as far as I saw; it looked like it was only Bob. So I assumed you were referring to Metz and not Bob.

          • cush creekmont says:

It’s all good. I should have read it more clearly. Metz comment to Sam on spelling “what’s” right above mine reads “Johnson” on my screen, but updates and edits may be in play.

          • Drew says:

Fair enough. And well, I learned something new today, that doesn’t have anything to do with the MCAT. Gonna call that a win.

          • cush creekmont says:

Studying for Med School – good luck and well-done to get to that point. (At least, that is the only definition of that acronym I know).

          • Drew says:

Appreciate it. Actually taking it tomorrow morning, so I’m peaking in here to break up the last minute review session.

          • cush creekmont says:

Good luck! [Can’t say “knock’em dead” or “break a leg” to a prospective doctor – :)]

          • Drew says:

Eh, I’ll have to slice a cadaver at some point, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it ;).

        • Rick says:

OK, I’m a little older and have to take a water pill so….URO!*!*

      • cush creekmont says:

Good job Clint. This is one of the longest threads on grammar/spelling in months. It is a long off-season and we need what we can get. 🙂

      • Oscar says:

He could have written “So, are our” ( I’m sorry, I meant wrotten) Whoops, re-read. I am incorrect. (whoops, I meant re-red)

    • Jeff says:

Need 1 more don’t see Perine leaving after 3 years. Mixon might but would be better off staying

      • SquidGiant says:

I actually think Mixon will likely play for four thanks to an incident I won’t mention. The NFL is going to have to look closer and closer at character, and while I don’t think Joe has poor character it might raise that question. The farther removed from that the better.

  • soonersd says:

A buckeye beat down on Sep 17th could make Dobbins rethink his commitment… definitely, couldn’t hurt.

    • hOUligan says:

I’m on board just for the sheer joy of a ‘buckeye beatdown’ … never mind about Dobbins. But if he wants to re-check his dna afterwards … cool.

  • KJ1123 says:

Our O-Line will be extremely salty in 17. This year is still kinda wait and see. But next year….and with Baker gone I feel we’re gonna lean on the run game a ton. And who knows…we may end up with a quality transfer too, jus sayin.

    • cush creekmont says:

We need that. 17 line could remind us of 2008. The QB will be more like 2007 (at least I hope that good). The “TE” (Andrews) could be as good and the RBs should be too.

    • Will Narramore says:

Do you have a scoop on a possible transfer or just spitballing?

    • SamSooner says:

      What’s been going on, KJ?

Well, when Baker is gone, the line will be even saltier. AK will have it like Bradford did. That’s the best way to break in a new QB.

      • Brien Brown says:

You assume AK beats out KM, that competition for QB will make either one of them a stud coming into the season due the fight they will have on hand to win said job. But, if KJ is right about a heavy run game, my belief is the KM is the better fit running a read spread option,

Off season + nice weather = slow.

Finally, it’s a great day here in Houston. We’ve been beat up pretty good. Problem is, it’s nice but ground is so soft, you really can’t do anything. I’ve been here for two hurricanes but neither of those dropped this amount of rain. I just put a new roof on my house and they finished the last nail on Friday and we got hail Sunday night. My luck.

          • jimintexas says:

Sorry about that. I work with a guy who’s brother just put a new roof on his house from the tornado east of Dallas in December and it had 14 holes punched into it from the hail this last week.

Tough to go through. Good luck

          • Boom says:

It’s all good but the timing was funny. Dallas gets major hail.

  • Bob Edwards says:

Thanks to you all for the kind words yesterday. They have diagnosed my wife with seizures that mimic strokes but are not actual strokes. The good news with the seizures is that she will recover after a few days rather than some of the effects being permanent as they would with a stroke.

We rented an apartment in town and will be selling our house. That will put us closer to the hospital and close to my work so I can help out more. We will be moving over the next couple of weeks so I may not be on here as much.

Try to fill the class up with five star DL and OL while I am busy.

My grandmother actually dealt and is still dealing with something very similar and she’s doing well, so that should be encouraging for you and your family. I look forward to your always insightful and kind of brash comments from time to time while you get situated! Lol. Sorry to hear about your wife’s challenges Bob. May the good Lord bless you both during this time. Prayers for comfort and healing. • JB says:

Adam Levine & Maroon 5 have done some good stuff and Adam’s a very talented musician, but some songs should be left to the original artist, especially Prince’s signature song. There is no person or band on this planet who can match or improve on Prince’s original. They should stick to renditions of “Let’s Go Crazy” or “Take Me With U” not Purple Rain.

  • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Hey Sooner fans, in light of the slow traffic this weekend, I thought I’d come on over with a question. Outside of the 5 star or otherwise “elite” talent that’s out there, which guy are y’all really hoping OU scoops up? So I guess we’re talking low 4 star, 3 star, sleeper level type of guys.

    • Slim Sooner says:

We would tell you, but then…… Ha Ha. jk

    • Brien Brown says:

Mean, to me some of those low 4 star to 3 star kids are under rated. But, in that boat 3 kids i think OU need to land is DT Deiontae Watts, Plano, TX 6’3 302, ATH DE TE Nick Robinson Putnam City West, OK 6’4 220, and DE Isaiah Thomas. Tulsa Memorial, OK, 6’4 230.

      • Daryl says:

Totally agree with this guys the only other guy that I would like to get but don’t think we will have pace is Jacob Phillips at ILB. Seems to really be flying under the radar

        • Brien Brown says:

Well he is solid and it’s clear we are on him. But, he isn’t as good IMO as Hines, Browning, and Jordan-Swelling. Now not saying he isn’t good but, With Draper on board and considering the 5 we took last class and with Youngquist situation unknown I am not sure how many we take. But, seems to me we are in a really good spot with Hines and Addison Gumbs, and they seem to like Gumbs a lot also.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

How do y’all feel about Creed Humphrey? Have y’all offered him yet?

          • Boom says:

I think we are pretty good with Creed but I think it’s good for him to look around. We hope to keep him but we have stiff competition.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Well it’s not often that you guys lose out on local talent, except to maybe the Pokes. I like the kid, but I’m not really sure where his floor or ceiling is at this point. Is he an underrated gem, or is he 2-3 year project?

          • Daryl says:

Exactly! It is always a great spot to be in when you can be content to let a guys like Phillips go because you have too many players at that position. I hope we can land Browning but I don’t know

      • hOUligan says:

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

What is this talk about Quick moving from WR to CB? Did I read information from other board incorrectly?

    • Sooner Ray says:

Not incorrect as I understand it. I think coaches considered the move but left him at receiver, either his choice or theirs.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I thought he could be all american DB and potentially 1st round NFL draft if he would have concentrated at DB but he wanted to play on offense. I hope he does switch sides if it isn’t too late to hone his defensive skills. He could be all world on defense IMHO.

    • Daryl says:

You read right but he is not planted at WR. From what Gundy has said in some interviews it sounds like Quick has really improved and his prep and his game.
