Open Post | Monday, May 16th

Devodrick Johnson: TFB recently brought to your attention the name of 2017 ATH/LB Devodrick Johnson (Dallas, TX), who plays QB and LB at Kimball HS but projects as a LB at the next level. Johnson has also seen his recruitment pick up of late, collecting offers from the likes of Missouri, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State and a number of others. And, as we told you previously, Johnson is the younger brother of current OU cornerback, Antoine Stephens.

TFB had the chance to catch up with Johnson a couple days back, who passed along that Mike Stoops came by to visit last week. It sounds like OU is looking at Johnson as an ILB. At the “Jack” LB position, Oklahoma is really looking to move towards the more prototypical 6’4-6’5 guys as opposed to some of the undersized players they’ve used in that spot in recent years. So if the Sooners were to offer Johnson, it would be as an inside backer. – (Super K)

Tre Brown | CB Recruitment: You may or may not have been aware of the rumors swirling about that 2017 OU CB commit Tre Brown (Tulsa, OK) could possibly be looking around. TFB’s Brandon Drumm, who is very familiar with Brown’s recruitment, confirmed the rumors were indeed true. But before anyone were to freak out, there is more to the story.

Brandon was also able to confirm that whatever concerns there may have been were recently put to bed when the OU staff spoke with Brown. And TFB has since been told the OU coaches are planning to be in Tulsa this week to visit with Brown in-person.

TFB has also been told that as things currently stand, Oklahoma is done at CB with regards to this 2017 class. Expect the Sooners to continue communicating with some prospects, but it sounds like they will not be actively recruiting cornerbacks, or taking new cornerback commits, anytime soon.

The focus in the backfield, for now seems, to be on the safety position. – (Super K)

    Wow! So early. Love it!

  • Tony B says:

Damn I sure hope we don’t lose Brown. I think he has a ton of potential and speed kills. I think, even though undersized, Bandy will be the best of that bunch. Here’s to hoping we keep both of them.

  • Mark_in_VA says:

So, reading between the lines on Brown, he was concerned they were going to bring in additional corners? Or is that just coincidence? I don’t understand that, if so. If I’m a stud and I know it, I think I’m going to see the field no matter who else comes. Also, as we’ve seen at WR (CD and Rison) you can’t just assume everyone who commits to you is going to stick.

    First BOOMER!

  • Kyle Boone says:

Brown is big time but I can understand his concerns after looking at who is coming in and who is still on the roster. If he’s looking around I would think it’s probably more of an OU coaching staff thing than a choice on Browns part. He’s a hardcore Sooner fan.

  • Framoka says:

Sooner! Sounds like Brown just wants some love.

  • metzker says:

    First BOOMER -SOONER Combo!!!!!!!!!

  • hOUligan says:

Such is recruiting when you get a sack full of 4* s early. Now you scramble to put out fires and hold on to them. The alternative is trying to poach from other teams ‘commits’ while scrambling to fill your class w/ 4* s.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

If you go after the best. Everyone is going to try to pull them away from you.

  • Jake H. says:

I haven’t heard the best of things about Tre Brown.
From what I’ve been told, if he hits the road it won’t be the worst of things.

    • CW says:

      Care to explain?

      • Jake H. says:

Just that I have a friend who works at his High School who deals with Tre everyday.
When he committed I sent my friend a message since we are both OU alumns. Let’s just say my friend wasn’t excited. He just laughed and said he’s not that good of a kid. Apparently and exceptional football player, but not much character.
i imagine that’s something OUs coaches look at, so I’ll ride it out with them and hope for the best.
But if he leaves, I won’t be too worried about it.

        • Ura Hogg says:

Still a kid though. Getting praised every day by almost everybody for his athletic ability doesn’t always help mold a kid in the best way. If he gets on campus at OU he’ll be surrounded by enough other great athletes that he should be able to work out whatever personality flaws may have developed from being the high school superstar.

    • MikeyBoom says:

What do you mean by this? lol

  • Oscar says:

    From the Scout board:

“Florida State reached out to the B1G and want to move there with Georgia Tech.

(response) True, and that scenario continues to have legs to this day. Ohio State’s pushing hard for FSU and the core of engineering schools (Mich/Purd/Illinois/NW/ Wisc) wanting GT in the CIC academic consortium. Purdue and Illinois wanted GT over Maryland in the last B1G expansion.

FSU, Georgia Tech, UVA and UNC to the B1G.
    Oklahoma/Kansas to the B1G or Oklahoma/Texas

    • Birddawg says:

      FSU/OU aren’t AAU.
I thought B1G wanted AAU schools first?

    • Daryl says:

This is a prime example of why the Big 12 needs to press the LHN out of existence and into a conference network, and then go after these teams. I have been screaming for FSU and Clemson but Georgia Tech would be a great addition as well. Makes a great fit for WVU and if you somehow could add UVA wow great rivalry for sure and the great makings for East Division. Not mention your basketball would awesome too.

      East Division
      FSU
      Clemson
      UVA
      WVU
      Kansas
      Georgia Tech
      iowa state

      West Division
      OU
      OSU
      texas
      Baylor
      tech
      tcu
      k-state

      • hOUligan says:

Agree. Take the best of the B12-2 and the ACC and create a super conference. Like that best w/ B1G plan B.

      • cush creekmont says:

Any team, that is ANY team that has a chance at the BI6 would never consider the litttle 12-2. Going over and over and over what SHOULD or could have happened does not change the here-and-now.

Short of getting ND or SIX current P5 schools to switch, the 12-2 will remain a dud.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Don’t even have to do that. Let the Big 10 get those teams, and then the Big 12 can pick up some combination of Louisville, Clemson, Miami, Duke, Cincy, UCF, and whomever else. Might not be quite as top heavy as some other leagues, but a league with OU, UT, Louisville, Clemson, and Miami football, is a good conference.

  • Matt says:

so if CB is done, I’m guessing they’re recruiting Okudah at Safety? Which is interesting because Okudah has said he only wants to play CB at the next level? So the Sooners don’t have a realistic shot with him I guess?

    • Birddawg says:

That’s what I was thinking as well.
It was a longshot to begin with…

    • hOUligan says:

I find it interesting that OU just offered Kobe Boyce last week but now we are ‘full at CB’ reportedly. Not sure where OU stands w/ Vincent or Calloway among others so am sure we will be fine whatever Tre decides. Just like getting OK kids IF they fit.

    • hOUligan says:

  • Matt says:

on another note, Devo Johnson sounds like a big time sleeper so its great to see the Sooners recruiting someone like him to add depth to their class rather than to be the meat and potatoes. Look at the 2013 class, if you had Dom Alexander and Jordan Evans as depth with some true inside backer studs in front of them? That is the kind of depth you need to be a top 10 team annually.

  • MikeyBoom says:

Ok forgive me if I am too harsh but I think the Tre Brown really simple and dumb. I played sports all throughout my life and was taught about commitment. Seems to me like Brown got his feelings hurt and is scared of competition. If he’s a dawg let him prove he’s a dawg. If I knew my abilities and what I could do I wouldn’t be afraid of someone else coming in. Competition brings out the best in everyone. I remember a couple years back Cale Gundy said when we recruit someone we tell them straight up I’m looking for your replacement already because there is always someone better than you. That’s a damn good statement because this generation of kids are more entitled ever. Now you guys can stone me if you want. Lol call it what you want but if he’s looking elsewhere because of the idea that he isn’t the guy at OU then kick rocks dude. Samaje didn’t decommit when Mixon committed and he’s turned out pretty good. Samaje holds his own vs everyone in this country. because he’s got that DAWG inside of him. I had an OU fan say if Joe wouldn’t of gotten suspended for the you know what ordeal Samaje wouldn’t of seen the field his freshman year. That’s B.S. Samaje has proven he can compete with anyone. Have a blessed day yall

    • hOUligan says:

Gundy is right and every kid that is looking to play big time sports, whether amateur or pro, needs to understand the staff is always looking to sign someone better than you. That’s how you build teams and win championships.

      • MikeyBoom says:

Amen brother. I hate Alabama with a passion but look at Saban and how he does things. That guys recruits all kinds of studs who often play the same position but look where its gotten him? That’s because competition brings out the best in everyone

        • hOUligan says:

Steel sharpens steel. Saban loads his team w/ 4 and 5* players year after year and every kid that signs on knows. You’d better pull on your big girl panties ’cause someone every bit as talented is looking to out work and out perform you every day.

          • MikeyBoom says:

Your preaching to the choir Houligan lol. That OU friend of mine who said the Mixon thing is friends with Tre and he said Tre can go anywhere he want’s too and that he has a right to be mad I said dude Tre is going to get competition everywhere. If he thinks everything is going to be handed to him he’s fooling himself. Then he changed his tune to well you fans need to respect his decision. I’m like dude your just mad that someone is callin out your boy for being a primadonna. In my opinion, if he’s already debating on stickin with OU or not, I would recruit someone else. Shows to me he’s not committed as he should.

          • hOUligan says:

Lol. Just in full agreement. Love Samaje. But Mixon is another. He could’ve flinched and run but also is a competitor. Works his arse off and is willing to share time to make the team better as well as improve himself.

          • MikeyBoom says:

Oh believe me I love both of em and also know Joe on a personal level. I’m glad he stuck around. He is really a good kid and he’s said it personally around people we know that he regrets everything that happened. He made a mistake but stupid media ppl want to make sure he suffers. My wife loves Samaje but I always tell her I like Mixon a little more just to make her mad. Either way, we are lucky to have both these guys plus Rodney Anderson and Daniel Brooks in our backfield. BOOMER SOONER

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

If he hesitates too long, he’ll lose his spot and the next time we hear of him is when we see the back of his jersey trailing one of ours to pay dirt.

    • soonerjunky says:

If he’s afraid of competition, go to Tulsa. He would be a star. Maybe he was told the CB recruiting is over. Then OU continued to recruit CB’s. That would make me look around too. Maybe none of that happened, IDK.

    • cush creekmont says:

You’re right Mikey. Always has been, always will be competition. For me, they are all 17 year-old kids with variable maturity. Make the offer, treat them with respect, and let it play out. If they want to compete at OU, we will welcome them with open arms. If they choose to try elsewhere, we’ll wish them luck.

      • metzker says:

If he reads TFB i hope he reads yours Cush

        • cush creekmont says:

Metz, it’s just like in business. I’ve hired some great folks that chose to move on and I wished them well. A few others, I could not shut the door fast enough after they walked through it.

    • @Boom_Town_ says:

      Aaron Moorehead agrees with you.

    • Cav66 says:

Honestly, these are the kind of problems I would rather see us having. I like where we are right now in recruiting, but we are running out front with the lead dogs, and someone is always going to be biting at our heels until signing day. That beats running behind the pack trying to play catch-up.

    • Daryl says:

I don’t think it is a competition thing. If it was he would have already bailed with the other guys that have been added to the class IMO. I think this is where either a kid gets in his own head or people around him or other coaches recruiting him get in his head.

You start to think to yourself. They said they needed me and they only had this many spots but they keep offering other guys. If this guy or that guy commits are they are going to cut me loose or shuffle me to the bottom. We have seen plenty of schools do this, OU had not been one of them, and that can cause fear in a kid and I think that is understandable.

    • Ura Hogg says:

They are kids, and they have been and will continue to be affected greatly by what they’ve seen other commits do and by what they hear from competing schools. Everyone naturally would like to be ‘the man,’ even on the job scene for us adults.

How good it would make any kid feel to know that ‘now that they’ve got me, they have decided they don’t need anyone else at my position.’
Most kids don’t realize though that very few athletes come along who are head and shoulders above all of their peers.

The other thing they don’t realize is what coaches know about injuries. Even if a kid is great, they better have somebody else ready in case #1 gets hurt. And hopefully #2 at that position is real close to the same caliber of athlete.
Is a coach really supposed to tell a 4-star DB that the school’s not interested anymore because they already got a commitment from another 4-star DB? Of course not.

But, again, these are kids. And rival recruiters will tell them anything to sway their thinking. Sometimes it works sadly. Hopefully young Mr. Brown will stick with OU. He’s wanted, that’s for sure.

  • Richard Gray says:

Whats the trick or gameplan to get good talent and keep recruiting good talent with the prospects knowing they have to compete for a spot???

  • DCinAZ says:

    What was Tre upset about?

    • Bob Edwards says:

      Stuff

    • MikeyBoom says:

IMO, he was upset that coaches kept recruiting DB’s. To me, it seems like he’s scared of competition.

      • DCinAZ says:

He’s a highly rated CB nationally that everybody wants. What in the world does he have to be afraid of?

      • CPSooner says:

Heard that’s part of what upset Parrish Cobb last year. We started going hard after Mayden and him got him wittle feewings huwt 🙁

      • RocketCitySooner says:

I would guess other schools were feeding him stuff that OU continuing to recruit other players meant OU was sold on him and might withdraw their offer.

And, of course, this other schools were saying they wouldn’t ever, ever, do such a thing. Think of it as the old: “we will love you in the morning and they won’t.”

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

His Prom date pictures didn’t get enough “likes” on Instagram.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

So you freak us out about Tre Brown, but then try and ease us down a little? I’m confused as to why this is even news in the first place if its been put to rest. These camps couldn’t get be quick enough. We need those Sooner17 guys all together to keep the ball rolling.

    • Dick Bump says:

You read stuff like this all the time, it seems. It’s just internet crap. Something to read on a rainy day.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

People thinking the BIG12 can steal away 2-3 power 5 teams have lost their Damn minds. This conference is dead and our “perception” is dead, buried six feet under and will NEVER return. Sooner we leave this crap hole the better for everyone.

    • cush creekmont says:

Any such folks are dreaming. There is an outside chance that the 12-2 and the leftovers from the ACC get together. Once the BI6 and the SEC poach some of the ACC disgruntled schools (over the non existent ACC network), the 4-conference scenario will become evident.

If not gone before that, I’d like to see OU in the running car ready to put it in gear.

    • DCinAZ says:

“This conference is dead and our “perception” is dead, buried six feet under and will NEVER return.”

This isn’t true. This is the same stuff they were saying about the B1G a couple of years ago and then tOSU won a national title and suddenly the perception is compeletly different. “Perception” of the BIG XII is nothing but moronic group think most of the time.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I’m aware, but when everyone is a broken record when saying ” big12 is weak” or ” we play no defense” blah blah, ppl start to believe it. I’m into statistics and advanced stats show we aren’t nearly as bad on defense as the media makes it out to be. I want us to leave bc of perception. For the last 4 years the big12 has been laughed at and I’m sick of it.

        • DCinAZ says:

Sure they do. People are morons. It’s much easier to say we play no defense in the BIG XII than it is to get your mind around spread offenses that play with Tempo and why they’re effective, so people take the lazy route and form their perception by simply looking at the outcome of the score.

Texas resurfacing as a power would change a lot of perceptions and the BIG XII winning a natty would shut everyone up entirely.

          • ccmosaic says:

The crazy thing is, OU played against spread O’s all year and still had one of the best pass D’s in the nation. We play no D is crap. We need to continue to recruit to the current D system and get bigger but, we play some nasty D.

          • Matt says:

It would also help if said offenses showed up in bowl season. OSU and Tech both got destroyed by SEC teams.

          • Drew says:

That’s b/c both teams were garbage last year. I still have no idea how OSU beat TCU, but BU and TCU were easily 2nd and 3rd best in the conference last year.

          • Boom says:

Wait. SEC gets to chose who they play. Tech was 6-6 and plays a co runner up in SEC west. Quite the difference. SEC wants to pad their post season play for ESPN. OSU just got beat by a good Ole Miss team.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I know, but I kind of like it when Texas is down. I’d rather leave and have Texas remain down.

        • Boom says:

Perception is based on media, ESPN. They only tout one conf, SEC. So no matter what we do or win a natty, they will down play it to force SEC down our throat. Doesn’t matter what we do. However, coaches do know what we do and that is why so many Big 12 teams are ranked.

          • DCinAZ says:

They make it sound like we’re the worst conf. in football and that’s bullsh*t. We’ve been better than the PAC and the ACC FOR YEARS.

          • Boom says:

Agreed. Stoops talked trash on SEC and ESPN has never let us live it down so they bash us along with conf.

          • Defend Colfax says:

            What did he say?

          • DCinAZ says:

He said the SEC hype is really a bunch of programs in the conference that have never won anything living off of the accomplishments of a few teams at the top, which is exactly what the SEC is.

          • Boom says:

What every conference is. Look at the B1G, Pac or ACC. All alike.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Yep. Texas regaining relevance, more than anything else, would help the Big 12. That, and continued success from OU.

    • Stephen says:

That and the money shrinks after adding more teams. We’ll have the smallest payouts among the P5.

I’m pretty sure every school in the 12 negative recruits Texas. No one wants to see Texas win again because that means they will not get anymore recruits. Same thing with a&m recruiting against us. We are a sleeping juggernaut and they know it. But the recruits can hear bad stuff from the TCU coaches all they want. The recruits listen to players more than coaches IMO. All recruits love Charlie and are hearing the players talk up the program. If anything the negative recruiting will only put a bad taste in the recruits (against TCU) interested in Texas. Only non Texas targets will eat that stuff up.

    • DCinAZ says:

I think he’s talking about the other Texas teams in the BIG XII and he’s correct. They’ve been negative recruiting against Texas for the last few years and baylor has done so with great success. TCU has as well.
All of the Texas schools were negative recruiting against us as well telling kids we’re a fading power in the league, the program is in decline, and they’re the new hotness. That was all good until we won the the conference last year with the “Daddy’s back” campaign. I believe that’s a big part of the reason we’re recruiting so well in TX again all of a sudden. We took away their (TCU, Baylor, Tech) recruiting pitch.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

I like the sound of that phrase, “Daddy’s back” when referring to the state of OU Football lol. Has a certain ring to it!

Texsa has been “a sleeping” something for a few years now. The only thing giant about them is their ego. They have become the poster picture of “All hat and no football.”

    • SooperDave says:

Nobody needs to negative recruit Texsa. If it wasn’t for them beating OU, they’d probably have a new coach this year.

They’ve sucked for 6/10 of a decade…well, not true, they’ve sucked forever but have been a lousy football team for 6/10 of a decade.

        • Cav66 says:

Can’t give them another free one this year if we expect to make a playoff run, not to mention the absolute shame of losing 2 in a row to texsa (aka the sleeping/sucking juggernaut).

Someone tweet this idiot back: “Hey @jefflongUA. You lost to Taco Tech. You lost. To Taco. Freaking. Tech.”

      • OohRah Mama says:

Hey Jeff Long…Keep all those friends in low places, drink two pina coladas and if tomorrow never comes for your shot a being a powerhouse, remember Arky is much too young to have more than a memory of being a team that matters. You just keep pulling on that longneck bottle and dreaming of the dance. Wild horses fresh from the rodeo couldn’t drag your program to our high level, ever. Enough Garth for ya, pal?

Besides, Garth is an Oklahoma State fan. Why would his opinion matter to us?

  • j l says:

Wonder if maybe the offer to boyce is what triggered brown “wavering”? Seems like the 2 kinda coincided.

Let’s stir up some discussion. Name one of your favorite quotes from a Sooner coach or player. Here’s one of mine:

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Moments after eighth-ranked Oklahoma’s 41-31 upset of second-ranked Kansas State Saturday, a fan in an tent-like purple jersey walked up to OU coaching legend Barry Switzer and stuck out his hand.

“I’ve always been a big fan of yours,” the man said.

Switzer smiled, patted the man on the back and said, “Y’all had a good run.”

    • j l says:

“I haven’t carried this much money around with me since I recruited”

Switzer in new orleans for the sugar bowl. Made me crack up =)

    • JDSooner says:

After losing to OSU one year: “Well, that oughta hold ’em for another decade or so…”

    • Walter Sobcek says:

No such thing as OU ‘upsetting’ KSU, regardless of the rankings!

  • metzker says:

Barry —like smoke through a key hole,Name the player?

Also I’m glad we’re starting to move away from the small LB’s, need guys that can hit a RB without falling backwards giving the runner another yard or two.

I really, REALLY find it creepy that people take the time to search to see if OU recruits have enrolled…that is borderline stalker-ish, and it bothers me a lot!

Got one right here. Agreed on the TO’s. I give them props for weathering the storm and somehow being in this thing still. Defensive approach hasn’t been bad for the most part.

Didn’t get to watch because of the Jenks graduation. Can’t believe they didn’t have it up on a big screen somewhere. 🙂
