Deonte Johnson: I exchanged a few brief messages with 2017 defensive end Deonte Johnson (Sacramento, CA), whose offer list includes the likes of Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida, LSU & a host of other top programs. Johnson let me know he has every intention of visiting OU, although an exact date for that visit has yet to be set. We’re hoping to catch up with Johnson as that OU trip approaches, but he’s just another example of how Oklahoma’s more aggressive recruiting practices this year are producing visits and results. – (Super K)

Addison Gumbs: Another 2017 California prospect who plans on visiting Norman is OLB/DE Addison Gumbs (Hayward, CA). However, unlike Johnson, Gumbs already has his trip schedule set and plans on being in Norman on April 4th. I spoke with a source close to Gumbs and asked about his interest in OU and was told, “they are still looking at things…looking at the schools and their options, but the interest in Oklahoma is real.” – (Super K)

Isaiah Thomas: Keeping with the DE/OLB theme, 2017 prospect Isaiah Thomas (Tulsa, OK) let us know yesterday that he plans on in Norman later today. This will be the second time Thomas has visited the Sooners. I spoke with Thomas last week about his interest in OU. “You know guys like (Levi) Draper and the OU commits have been on me hard, and it’s one of the only schools I’ve visited. But I like everything so far. I haven’t seen many other schools, but right now OU is up there for me.”

Thomas said he was unsure on a possible commitment timeline but did add, “I’m not sure (on a possible commitment coming soon), but I would still like to see some other schools. I’m talking to my mom about getting down to see Baylor and Texas A&M, and I’ve been hearing a lot from Tennessee as well.”

The #SoonerSquad17 is certainly pushing hard for an early commitment from Thomas. As of now, however, Thomas maintains that he’d like to wait and continue to evaluate things. But with the momentum OU has right now, an early commitment certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility. – (Super K & Brandon)

Grayson Reed: Another visitor expected this weekend is star 2017 offensive lineman Grayson Reed (Houston, TX). I spoke with Reed’s father Monday night, who let me know they plan on being in Norman this Friday & Saturday. As some of you may know, Reed has strong ties to Texas. His cousin, Cedric Reed, played for the Longhorns.

In talking with Reed’s father, it’s pretty clear Texas holds a strong place at or near the top of his son’s list of schools. However he went on to say, “Oklahoma was one of the first schools to build a relationship with us. Grayson likes Coach B (Bedenbaugh). They communicate regularly, and we’ve had that relationship with him for a while.” Reed Sr. also added, “I sit back and just let Grayson evaluate things and try to act as a consultant more than anything. We are just happy that he’s going to get play football at that level, so wherever he feels comfortable and wants to play we’re going to support that.”

Reed Sr. also noted that Grayson and the family would like to have a decision made sooner rather than later. “We’ve talked about it, and we want things to be done no later than early summer, or earlier if it feels right.”

It seems pretty clear that this trip to Norman will be about seeing how the Sooners stack up with Texas, Tennessee, TCU and the other schools Reed has already visited. – (Super K)

Jordan Moore: Sticking with the visitor narrative, the Sooners will have a 2018 visitor on campus today in ATH Jordan Moore (Yoakum, TX).

Moore tells Alex the Sooners are recruiting him as an athlete, but he believes that will eventually end up at defensive back.

Really like hearing about parents involved as sounding boards for their kids and not pushing. Let the kid enjoy seeing and comparing schools. Then decide to be a Sooner, as there is really no comparison.

I’m one of the sunshine guys so this will sound offbeat for me. From reading above on Grayson’s, it seems like dad is letting him have his fun. When it comes time to commit, dad will say, that’s great but you’re going to UT. Don’t call me SD, but that’s what I read. Hope I’m wrong.

    • metzker says:

      Wheres your sunshine pump?

  • Brian says:

Good stuff! Can’t wait to see how this LB class fills out…Hines, Browning, Gumbs, Phillips, Thomas are just a few who have strong interest in OU (and of course Draper being committed)

  • Ryan says:

Soo Marvin Wilson is not visiting for the Spring Game? Going to Ole Miss instead? Never been so tired of an irrelevant school as much as I have been of Ole Miss. These recruits are blind.

  • SoonerGray says:

Gumbs had 23 sacks as a Junior to go with 74 tackles. Pretty impressive production from a OLB. Gets in passing lanes well and seems to have great strength for his size (6′-3-4”/210)

  • metzker says:

Its so awesome to have our TFB back!—————

  • AmaGoh7 says:

Great stuff ! Bottom line is if a staff doesn’t basically obsess / be addicted to recruiting you will get left behind. The difference is showing.

Hitting the DE’s! I like it!

  • KJ1123 says:

So I just watched Gumbs Hudl and the kid is really fast off the edge. Had some nice highlights. But I didn’t see him making too much contact which makes me wonder about his physicality. Also the competition didn’t look like it was very good imo. But he has alot of offers, i’m willing to bet he’s got a really good gpa and is getting it done in the classroom.

I will be bringing my little brother Tyrese Robinson back up to OU this weekend, here lately at the Nike and Under Armour Camps Grayson Reed and him having been pretty close. I think it’s important for non commitments to see and feel the vibe from the current commitments. Let them interact with the great cast of teammates being put together in this class. I don’t know if anyone on here was in attendance at any of those camps but OU commitments were on notice like no other. Leaders of the Secondary, Linebackers, Quarterbacks and Oline groups, they all were out there recruiting the best of the best in our area. Kids want to be a part of good tight net group like that. They idolize that.

    • SamSooner says:

      T. Rob, thanks for the feedback. TFB has often reported that recruiting gets a lot of assistance from the current commits. It definitely seems like this group is hitting the road and doing their part.

      • T. Rob says:

Yeah, with their soonersquad17 private chat group they are at it daily with all the big names and names not well known. These kids realize that If they truly want to go toe to toe with Bama, LSU, Ohio state, Clemson, they gotta have equal level talent across the board as well. You put a top 5 class together for this coaching staff, a national championship then becomes expected and not hoped for…were then on the level of Ohio st. and bama. Were it’s national championship or bust, because well have the talent.

    • Dustin says:

      This is uplifting.

Bro are you really his brother? If so, how do you feel about your little bro being commited to OU?

      • T. Rob says:

i’m 15 years older then him, i’m basically his father figure. After the Junior day back in Jan we just leaving OU and he was like I think i want to commit to here, I was like hey, me and mom love the atmosphere academics and coaches here we got a great vibe and trust me after 13 years in army i know people…they’re real up there in Norman. But I told him lets turn around and go back and make it happen. Now i see he’s even more on board then at that time if that’s even possible to compare. Plus OU develop lineman for the pros at a high rate. And as you can see tyrese has the Size, athletic ability, drive, and academics to make it. And i believe Coach Bedenbaugh can make that happen

    • MikeyBoom says:

Awesome! I know I, and hopefully everyone else here appreciates you stopping by and giving us some inside info! It also makes me feel a little more comfortable about T-Rob still being here come February. The younger T-Rob is my favorite and IMO best, and most important commit right now!

      • T. Rob says:

Most people dont’ know but hes still 16, his birthday is aug, he’ll be 17 coming up there next summer. He’s still growing and maturing into a adult. You guys will have a strong versatile beast on the line for years to come. And i’m 99% sure Darrell Sampson will be there in 18′ to go along with Bray Walker, that’s true NFL beef right there, Coach B is putting together a Oline that will be easily top5

          T. Rob – I had the pleasure of meeting your Mom and the younger T. Rob at a Ford dealership in McKinney several weeks ago as my daughter was buying a car. Young T. Rob had is OU sweatshirt on so I promptly gave him a BOOMER across the showroom – at which he flashed a big grin, and responded appropriately! Very impressed, a solid hand-shake by said brother :), and very much enjoyed speaking to mom & son. Actually I helped your mother with some car pricing websites to help out with her negotiations… They mentioned planning on taking some OVs as well, but only for the ‘tourist value’ to be experienced as you said above… Looking forward to the Robinson’s officially gracing the field in Norman… Boomer!

    – Anthony Hines: I was told yesterday that Plano East (TX) LB Anthony Hines plans to visit Texas for their Spring Game on April 16th. This is big for Texas as it would be Hines’ 2nd trip to Austin this Spring. He also plans to visit Texas A&M for their Spring game but in talking to a source I’m told that the biggest threat to Texas in Hines recruitment is going to be Oklahoma. – (Andrew)

    …From the Texas TFB

    • hOUligan says:

And conversely, the biggest threat to OU getting Hines is the hated horns. Not the Bears or the Aggroids. Order restored in the B12.

    • KJ1123 says:

Hines and Draper should be around each other alot in the next 4 months with camps and what not, hopefully they’ve built a good bond.

      • Draper and Hines have known each other for years. They are friends. Played for their age division team USA for years together. The bond is there. I’ve seen it in person.

        • hOUligan says:

Not that they couldn’t have a good-natured competition, one wearing crimson and the other baby diaper surprise orange, but would think they could enjoy their college experience all the more as teammates. Just sayin’…

        • Drew says:

Hey Brandon, I’ve been wondering if we stand any chance with Baron Browning? I’ve seen that our commits are recruiting him hard, and the thought of both him and Hines this class gets me giddy, but I haven’t seen much on here about our chances with him.

          • hOUligan says:

Dream team stuff, right there, w/ Draper. Now throw Isaiah Thomas and Trevor Kent in. Wow.

          • T. Rob says:

That Kent kid is very underrated, he will be a hidden gem in the class.
And you gotta love Thomas speed of the edge…I hope they lock them both down. D line in the class looks like it’s hard to come by.

        • T. Rob says:

Brandon, Tyrese and Hines grew up playing football and being coached by Hines father, they have good relationship as well, which leads me to believe hines is looking at this class and thinking to himself I might just want to hop on board. And he’s very close to his Dad, which is why I couldnt see him going that far from the DFW area. Which leaves you with Texas Baylor and OU as his true contenders. Add the relationships he already has with Levi and Tyrese plus D. Watts from his plano team is pretty much coming to OU as well and add in the SS17 great class he’s going to come to OU.

          • hOUligan says:

Saw where you had posted previously about Hines dad coaching them. Hoping those early bonds will bring Grayson, Hines and a few others into the fold. These guys are on the verge of putting something very special together.

          • T. Rob says:

Houligan, yes sirrr….and they know and other uncommitted recruits feel it too…The SS17 kids are putting as much pressure on uncommitted recruits as college coaches are, but it’s a different prospective coming from the kids instead of the coaches.

          • hOUligan says:

That’s the really cool part. These kids are doing this. They know the competitors and who has the skills and would be a good fit. And while there is some peer pressure, I’m sure they sense the fun and excitement of putting together a team. Will be fun to watch over the years how they work together to get better and achieve goals. Social media has added a new dynamic and placed recruiting literally into the hands of the kids/recruits. Fascinating stuff.

          • T. Rob says:

exactly…and on top of that they’re pointing out kids who need a look or offer that OU might have not even came across or paid attention to yet. To be honest. They’re starting a new revolution in recruiting, you get early commitments to bond together and peer recruiting.

    • SamSooner says:

Kids from Georgia rarely consider offers GT. Because I’m from Georgia, I can tell you GT is way down the list of their preferred choice: there’s Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky (SEC schools) and then there is Miami and FSU. Rarely does a big time recruit want to go to GT. Then throw in the academic requirements to get in GT.

      • soonersd says:

Good to know…. So kind of like an Okie Ultra Light but with high academic requirements.

On a side note do you happen to know what drew Calvin Johnson to GT? Never understand how a receiving talent like that would go to a school that runs that kind of offense. I assume the academics you referenced may have came in to play.

        • SamSooner says:

I know. I think that was a fluke. No one knew the name Calvin Johnson until his senior year. He might have been a late bloomer.

          Edit: senior season at GT.

        • JB says:

You cannot compare GT to okie state in any way. One, Georgia Tech has a football tradition and has won a national title. Two, GT is in a major city while oSu is in a town that reeks of pigs***. Three, GT is the public university equivalent of an ivy league school. The only thing keeping oSu from being dead last in conference academics is that WVU and TTU are in the conference. They consistently have the worst APR scores in conference! If we’d added Louisville, that would have moved oSu up one more notch. GT also has cool u iforms with normal colors. oSu has 50 different ugly arena football quality uniforms, each as bad of an eyesore as the last one.

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

And that there’s a total of 9 women who go to school at Ga Tech kinda seals it.
