Cody Ford: As we’ve already reported, TCU commit Cody Ford is likely to give word on his final commitment before the summer is over. And it may actually come before the month is out. It’s clear that Cody is very high on the Sooners. However when we spoke to Cody a few weeks back, he still had plans to attend Miss. State and LSU’s camp. We caught up with Ford yesterday, and he said that he has received an offer from Miss. State. We asked him if the offer from Miss. State put them on top or if OU was still higher, and he said Oklahoma is still higher.

So what that seems to mean is OU remains in good position for a possible flip. As we’ve mentioned before, LSU would be the potential game changer. If LSU doesn’t offer, then OU could be grabbing their third OL commitment very soon. If OU closes out the summer well it’s conceivable they could be done with OL recruiting by the end of the summer (Ford, Akamonu, and Danley – while also already counting Barnett for OU in our minds).

Baker Mayfield: Recently received a couple interesting pieces of news on Baker Mayfield. Got word from a source that said Baker Mayfield is filing another NCAA appeal for immediate eligibility to play. All we were told is that somehow Texas Tech made some mistakes in whatever relevant parts they were required to fill out on the original appeal. Not sure what argument Mayfield will make, but again we’ve been told that a new appeal will be filed.

This does not mean his chances of winning the appeal are any better or worse, so this is more about the process having still not run its course and him still having a chance (albeit not that great of one by most accounts) of getting eligible for this coming season.

Some other interesting news we’ve heard from mutliple sources is that not only is Mayfield an excellent competitor and quarterback, but that he can legitimately compete with Trevor Knight. We certainly don’t know — nor could anyone really — whether the coaches would even consider the possibility of allowing him to compete for QB1 spot. But what we do know is while everyone respects Knight’s ability as a quarterback and a leader, there are multiple people who believe Mayfield may actually throw a better ball.

If nothing else, Mayfield would ensure that OU has an excellent backup should Knight go down. The word we’ve heard is the younger QBs still need time to develop, so Mayfield being able to play (if needed) would obviously be huge.

PJ Mbanasor has a good laugh: Spoke to OU CB commit PJ Mbanasor after he got back from The Opening, and there were a couple things he mentioned that we wanted to pass long. Firstly, he talked about the SEC hype. He said that he ran into recruits who were committed to SEC schools and when he asked them why they were committed, he said they could tell him very little about the schools winning percentage or anything substantive. Instead, they simply said the school is in the SEC and that’s why they committed. He thought that was really strange. PJ is someone who did a lot of research about Oklahoma, visiting the campus twice, before committing.

PJ also said he spent a lot of time with the TAMU commits. He said that he asked one of them about TAMU’s history and national championships in an attempt to make the point they don’t have much of a storied tradition. One Aggie commit said,”we’re going to win the national championship in 2016.” PJ told us, “I couldn’t help it. I just busted out laughing, shook my head and walked off.” We got a kick out of that.

PJ being pursued by LSU: Another note about Mbanasor. It appears LSU is not letting up. They are apparently still recruiting him very hard despite his Oklahoma commitment. Before anyone asks, yes he is still solid to OU. Just think it’s flattering for OU fans to know that with LSU’s ability to pull in top CBs around the country, the fact that they are still recruiting Mbanasor hard says something about what they see in him.

– UPDATE (10:55 am): OU has made their first offer since the dead period ended yesterday to 2015 DE Kenneth Mann (Burleson, TX).

UPDATE (12:22 pm): Newest DE offer, Kenneth Man tells us he will be visiting Oklahoma next week! More later.

– UPDATE (3:38 pm): As noted in the comments below, OU has announced the hiring of a new (and much needed) Director of Player Personnel – Drew Hill, formerly of Colorado State. Still in the process of trying to learn more about him, but wanted to get this up just so nobody missed it.

This could be the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.

I loved it when I heard it. PJ has tremendous confidence without being arrogant. I think he has the chance to be a great leader at OU.

I know we say it all the time, but I really hope you guys know how much we appreciate this site. TFB is off the charts AWESOME!!

    • hOUligan says:

I know these are 16-17 yr old kids and it’s rare to find ones who think for themselves, despite their attempts to be unique, but maybe some will begin to question the sec hype and really look at the individual history of the schools they are considering. 2016 huh? OU is in the hunt this year and looking strong for 2016, too, when you look at the depth chart.

      • FeedtheMonster says:

I think if 2 things happen this season the shine is really going to come off of the A&M/SEC sales pitch in the state of Texas. 1: a team outside the SEC wins the title, and 2: A&M does not improve much on defense, which will get ugly for them without Johnny and Evans. There’s only so long you can snow people. They could say “It’s only been 2 years since the SEC won the title” but 2 years is a lot longer in the minds of 17-18 year olds than it is to most people. Also, it’s not like A&M was ever the SEC team playing for the title, even with Johnny and Evans. The eSpin thing really irritates me, however it hasn’t seemed to help texas very much yet.

  • Brian says:

PJ might be my favorite recruit of the class…Watching his highlights at The Opening, I couldn’t but say, “He just looks/plays like a Sooner already!”

  • Zack says:

Well hopefully pj’s attitude rubs off on some other recruits to look at the bigger picture. But if kids committed to sec schools just because they’re sec schools then they can keep them.

    • Kody K. says:

Sounds a little sour Zach. I know it’s frustrating, but these are still kids who have been exposed to a an overabundance of SEC propaganda. They need coaches and parents to deflect the SEC hype and drop some unbiased knowledge on them.

      • Zack says:

Maybe a little sour the sec has been over hyped but they are the ones who won 7 or 8 straight titles until last year. I hear what you’re saying about getting unbiased info but that’s almost impossible with espn promoting the sec every chance they get. And most people get their sports info from espn.

        • SamSooner says:

Zack, good point. I agree. There are far too many people who don’t question what they hear. My brother used to say, “On Monday, most sports fans talk about what they heard about a game. I talk about what I saw in the game.” The SEC hype reminds me of the old Miami Hurricanes: I could count one, maybe two games they might be challenged. From there on it was smooth sailing to the title game. The voters have not punished an SEC team in the polls the way they do other conferences. If the stars fell into place, you’d have a one or two loss SEC team in the title game. To me, that 7 straight titles is a paper tiger.

          • jotay21 says:

But what you saw in the game is what caused the hype. Say what you want about the run the SEC had, but they were the best conference hands down for a long time and maybe even last year as well. Only one of those “paper” championships are without beating another conference in the title game. They got to the title game and got it done. More than we could say about the Sooners during that run. Hell, 2 of our last 3 NC game losses were at the hands of teams from the SEC.

          • boomersooner says:

If you’re talking about championships, then all you can say is what Zack said, “they capitalized.” They weren’t punished when they lost because the team they lost to was overrated. If you’re number 1and lose to say number 10, in any other conference you move down 5-6 spots. In sec you might not move. If you’re talking bowls, not hard to have a good bowl record when your 3rd or 4th place gets Minnesota and your 5th or 6th place gets so. miss in Memphis and all your bowls are in your backyard. Might sound like whining to some but if you peel it back its truth

          • jotay21 says:

Capitalized, won, I guess they mean the same thing. And as far as bowls go, what do you want them to do? They typically win and are generally the worst of the two teams when it comes to conference standings. I am a Sooner fan living in South Carolina, so all I hear about down here is the SEC. I for one believe it is deserved though. Only complaint I have is that they need to add one more conference game to be on par with the other members of the big 5.

          • j l says:

Does capitalizing really mean they are the best though? Analyze the SEC’s run.
2012- Bama has to backdoor into the title game(late season losses by KSU/oregon). Not bama’s fault, but they could have easily not made the title game.
2011- bama backdoors the title game again(OSU would have crushed the LSU team who showed up
2010- auburn deserved the title game shot, controversy in title game vs oregon(was the runner down or not?)
2009- UT probably wins with colt in the game
2008- OU wins with murray playing.

The SEC could have EASILY not won any of those titles. a LOT of things had to go right for them to make that kind of run. Does a lot of luck really mean they are the best? I dont think so.

As to bowl games, since the SEC always gets 2 teams in the BCS, all their teams slide down a tier, making a lot of bowl games mismatches.

          • jotay21 says:

Seems like a whole lot of what ifs in your post.
2012, Bama did what they had to. Mid season loss, then ran the table. KSU and Oregon controlled their own destiny and lost.
2011, OSU would not have beaten that LSU team. OSU couldn’t beat ISU that year, but somehow they boatrace LSU??? I disagree…
2010, according to the rules, the runner wasn’t down. Not much else to say about that.
2009, pure speculation. I happen to disagree.
2008, pure speculation. I disagree here as well. DM was a great Sooner, but wouldn’t have won that game for us. Not to mention this was a game that Texas should have been in, not OU.
And again, it isn’t their fault they “slide down”. They still win the majority of their games.

          • j l says:

Thats my entire point, there was a whole lot of what ifs for each and every year the SEC won the title recently.

OSU lost to ISU because of a tragedy that happened right before the game, do you not remember that? the LSU team that showed up in that game was trash, OSU wins easy.

Gilbert throws 5 picks vs bama, and UT was within a TD in the last 5 minutes of the game, but colt would have made no difference?

You dont think murray makes any difference against florida in 08? we lost by 10, and left 14 points on the board in the 1st half due to goal line issues, something murray could have easily helped with.

and you think UT deserved to be in the game in 08, despite the fact we lost early in the season, they lost late, and we smeared the TTU team that beat them?

Are you sure you are actually a sooner fan? you dont sound like it to me. Sounds like living in SEC country has most definitely influenced your judgement.

          • jotay21 says:

Or it could be that not living in Sooner country has allowed me to remove my crimsoned colored glasses. If you don’t think the teams that won the NC games were worthy, that is fine, I simply disagree with you. All I gather from your statements are excuses. The SEC teams that went to the national championship games got it done, their opponents didn’t.
in 2008, Brown had more carries, yards, TD’s and the same ypc as Murray. It wasn’t like we didn’t have a good option in the NC game. Florida was just better. Bama was better than Texas and LSU. Also, you claim ‘Bama backed in to rematch LSU, but don’t feel we did in 08? How does that work? There were a lot of 1 loss teams and ‘Bama’s loss was to the #1 team in the country and barely. And again, no way OSU beats LSU in that game. Isn’t happening.
And it is ‘Bama’s fault that Texas didn’t have a qualified backup to step on the field? Sorry that you feel that Texas would have beaten ‘Bama based off the 1 drive that McCoy played. I guess if 1 drive makes a game, we shouldn’t have beaten Alabama last year. Their first drive made us look pedestrian.
I agree whole heartedly that it takes luck to win a NC. A bounce here or there or a break when you don’t expect it. That being said, you act as if the SEC hasn’t earned their reputation. That is simply wrong. You see it differently, and that is fine. You just aren’t going to convince me otherwise. Their conference has been the best in CFB for the past 5-7 years and it really boils down to their defensive teams. Hell, two years ago, A&M had a horrible Defense that we couldn’t do anything against. There are a lot more examples of the quality of football in the SEC than there are that point to them being overrated.

          • Boom says:

I’m sure you have good intentions but you seem more like a pot stirrer.

          • j l says:

Im just saying it took a whole lot of things going exactly as they needed to in order for the SEC to have a run like that. Some of it was skill, but a whole lot of it was luck.

Brown was too slow for florida, murray was a much better option against a fast, attacking defense like that. Similar numbers dont tell the tale, they were completely different backs.

You dont think an OSU team scoring 53 a game, with a defense that produced nearly 40 turnovers, could beat an LSU team that took 50 minutes to get into opponents territory? Thats hilarious. OSU wipes the floor with THAT LSU team. Notice i say THAT LSU team, the one that came out completely flat in the title game, not the one that ran through the regular season. 2 completely different teams, and the one that showed up wasnt even a top 10 team.

Where did i say it was bama’s fault that UT didnt have a viable backup? Im just saying it was a massively lucky break. If you dont think colt makes any difference in a game that was VERY close, I dont know what else to tell you. Colt barely threw 5 int’s all year, and gilbert threw that many in 1 game. 5 extra possessions in a 1 score game is a pretty big deal.
It had nothing to do with the 1 drive colt was in, it was how BAD gilbert was.

A&M didnt have a horrible defense in 2012, you might want to go back and look again. Their defense was terrible in 2013, but not 2012. Gave up 32.2 in 2013, but only 21.8 in 2012.

You are on an OU board, singing the praises of the SEC, like they can do no wrong. You are right, im not going to be able to convince an obvious closet SEC fan of anything that might resemble not bowing down to them.

          • jotay21 says:

In regards to OSU, that is exactly what I am saying. The cowboys would have been overwhelmed by the LSU defense. 53 a game huh? Did we not learn anything in 08? Pretty sure we were averaging about 50 a game when we rolled into Miami. See where that got us.

And if you think that Bama’s gameplan once Gilbert came in didn’t change drastically, not sure what to tell you. I am not saying that UA would have rolled UT or that it wouldn’t have been a nail biter. I am saying that I don’t think the McCoy injury affected the outcome of that game in the least. Could have had an impact on stats/score, but I think UA would have won regardless.

A&M had a bad defense in 2012 as well. THey weren’t as bad as they were in 2013, but they were still bad. A good defense doesn’t give up over 50 Louisiana Tech.

Closet? What about my posts have given you the impression that I am a closet SEC fan? Been pretty out there that I think their hype is deserved. They have earned it. Up until last year, they had knocked off every BCS opponent they had faced in the championship game. They went to 10 out of 16 BCSNC games and won 9 of them. If that doesn’t deserve hype, I am not sure what does.

          • j l says:

OSU would not have needed 53 to beat that LSU team. Im not sure how else to put it, but the LSU team that showed up THAT PARTICULAR GAME was terrible. They would not have overwhelmed OSU.

The pokes had 1 off game that year, at ISU, and everyone is convinced they werent good because of it.
Pretty much any top 10 team could have won the title against an LSU team that played that badly.

Did you watch the 09 title game? it was 24-21 with 6 min to go. It WAS a nail biter, with gilbert at QB. How much of a stretch would it be to say that UT could have won with their most accurate QB ever in the game? They held bama to like 260 total yards. Ya their strategy may have changed, but an extra 5 possessions i think helps more than any change in strategy would.

A&M had 1 bad defensive game against a La tech team who scored a ton on everyone, and that makes them a bad defense? They held multiple SEC opponents under 20. That was not a bad defense by any stretch.

The SEC deserves some of the hype its gotten, but nowhere nearly as much as they get. What has georgia done to earn them so much respect? What about south carolina? Ole miss? Miss st?
Hell, LSU hasnt done much the last 2 seasons, but is anyone down on them like they were us after 2 down seasons? Their 2013 season almost mirrors our 2011 season(going 9-3 and barely beating iowa in a bowl game), but was anyone dogging them for it? Nope.

I respect them, but you wont see me singing their praises. Yes, they won the big game when they got there. That deserves respect.
The simple fact that they could have easily not even made the game on multiple occasions, or lost some of those games had other teams not had key players injured, means the gap between them, and everyone else, isnt nearly as large as the SEC, its fans, and the media would have everyone believe.

I havent seen you really make a single positive comment about the sooners(in this conversation at least), while praising the SEC mightily, not really hard to see why I called you a closet SEC fan lol.

          • jotay21 says:

THe discussion isn’t about OU though. It was about what you see as undeserved hype to the SEC. I simply pointed out that I think it was deserved. Again, not a closet fan at all. I am as sick of hearing about it as everyone else is. Hell, I live in it. Worst part is that I live in a state that has a team that has done absolutely nothing to warrant the hype. I guess beating Clemson every year allows that??? I also think that over the past decade there has been a lot of parity in CFB. I do think that the SEC has been a touch better, but not by a longshot. It is no different than OU’s domination of the Big 12. How many of those years did we need some help to win it after suffering a loss we felt we shouldn’t have?

          • j l says:

sorry, im pretty defensive, since i spend a lot of time on places like ESPN and B/R, kinda have to be as a sooner fan over there.

We have certainly had our share of luck as well, I cant deny that. We havent capitalized on it like the SEC has, cant deny that either. It shows how razor thin the margin is between title and no title, and what infuriates me the most about all the bashing we receive.

The SEC probably has been better the last few years, they got extremely lucky that they hit a boon right when social media came into the picture, and it all kinda snowballed for them. Even with significant talent advantages now they still cant really widen the gap on the field though.

          • AmaGoh7 says:

That USC Leinart-Bush team would have rolled any of these $EC champs too.

OU also had to play L$U in the SuperDome – basically a pseudo-home game. Big advantage.

          • boomersooner says:

Haha. Worse when it comes to standings. That there is funny. 5th in the sec vs 2 in cusa is probly gonna be a laugher. You won’t convince any body here the sec hype is FULLY earned. I read your whole argument and the only valid point you made was about scheduling the extra conference game. I was born and raised in Memphis so I got my fill of it too. Just cause a bunch of idiots scream it don’t make it true

          • jotay21 says:

A lot of fail and irony in your post. So, 5th in the SEC vs 2nd in CUSA is a mismatch favoring the SEC, but #1 in Big 12 vs #1 in AAC is a mismatch favoring the AAC?? And you say it isn’t earned. “Just cause a bunch of idiots scream it don’t make it true”. Please god tell me you see the irony in that statement. The same could be said for saying they are overrated. And it isn’t an argument. I am just stating my opinion, which is backed up by their performance on the field over the past 7-8 years. If you don’t like it, I am sorry.

          • Zack says:

And let me just say I don’t want to take away anything from what the sec had done but there are question marks. For one stoops pointed out the difference between the top and the bottom. Only 4 teams from the sec won titles during that run the other 8 teams for the most part were irrelevant. Another thing let’s say Jason white isn’t hurt, demarco wasn’t out, and colt McCoy doesn’t get injured, does the sec teams win those 3 title games? Or does whatever team got left out when Alabama got their rematch have a real shot at beating lsu that year? Or if ou didn’t get screwed at Oregon in 2006 do they jump Florida to face ohio state that year?
My point they caught some breaks like most champions do, and they capitalized on them.

          • Kody K. says:

Don’t even mention that Oregon game! It should be expunged for our record as a no contest. Officiating at it’s worst.

          • DrZemus says:

Also, it makes it a little easier to have 7 straight, when ESPN ensures that only 2 SEC teams are playing for the title like LSU and Bama did.

That was madness. Which, by the way. LSU is the only team I can remember that had the distinct honor of being shut out in the NC game.

        • Kody K. says:

Yea, ESPN is the top sports source. That’s why it’s inequitable, if not downright dishonest for ESPN to have jumped in bed with the SEC like they have. Competing with ESPN is like a local supermarket competing with Wal-Mart. Somehow the Big Twelve conference and all it’s universities has to find a way to bolster the Big XII status and prestige.

          • paganpink says:

They were ridiculous in last years OU VS ALABAMA game as well. ESPN and ABC are in it together. It’s not until the fourth quarter that goofy Mussberger and the rest start to realize OU has a very real chance to win the game! They spent much of the game -with the Sooners ahead!- talking either about how great Alabama is or how strong the SEC is or how great their quarterback has been. And when it becomes apparent that we ARE going to win there are strange silences and obvious confusion among the announcing crew because they had no plan whatsoever as to who to interview post game or anything else when the Sooners hand them their asses. Somebody should explain ASSume to them sometime! It was unprofessional and unfair to have the majority of your “packages” and your coverage so biased towards one side in a competition.

          • Kody K. says:

Very true observation. In their eyes we were only Alabama’s “opponent”.

          • EasTex says:

The game announcer(don’t know his name) even made the comment after Saunders scored making it 24-17 that no one thought Bama would give OU 24 points.
Seriously? Give? As though Bama was in control of all aspects of the game.

          • Perry Dickey says:

I have watched this game over and over, more than an adult should admit. And, sir, you are spot on!

  • vexroid says:

    Aggies being Aggies.

  • kt-raida says:

I like Mbanasor he will do great things!

  • lovethemsooners says:

Still having a difficult time understanding the rationale behind the NCAA’s original decision to deny Mayfield immediate eligibility. It almost seems like such a common sense decision(which is probably why the NCAA got it wrong) since he was a walk-on and paid his own way.

    • Indy_sooner says:

NCAA doesn’t make a distinction between scholarship’d players and walk-ons once the LOI or some other doc is signed. Or some other sh!t like that. I think anyone with half a brain knows Baker should not have to sit out a year.

    • JR Kamm says:

Is this the NCAA’s decision or Texas Tech’s? From all I’ve read it’s Tech’s. Can he not appeal their decision to the NCAA? Is that what this is?

      • Kody K. says:

JR–Tech filed a protest against Baker playing for a school in their conference or on their schedule(for the year following his exodus from Tech) forcing him to have to sit out a year, and the NCAA upheld the decision. From what I understand, Tech may have filled out the petition inadequately, opening the door for Mayfield to plead his case again.

        • JR Kamm says:

Thank you, Kody. All I had ever seen was how TT denied the waiver with no mention of the NCAA at all. Appreciate the clarification.

    • ND52 says:

I think it also speaks volumes about Mayfield’s talent that TT didn’t want him at OU. If he truly—–truly—–wasn’t good enough for a scholarship at TT then why would they be worried about where he was xferring to?

  • Jim says:

    HAHAHAHA, I love PJ.

  • John Garner says:

Ford, Akamonu, Danley and Barnett would be a great way to close out OL recruiting. If so, do we still take Wariboko if he recommits to us? Thanks too for all your work. You guys are awesome!

  • Swanny says:

Sounds to me like the Aggie commits are a lot like Aggie fans… delusional…

  • Stephen says:

While funny, it does present the general problem that OU is being dismissed by recruits based on conference association. ESPN is basically contracted to recruit these guys 24/7 by mentioning SEC, by making SEC commercials, by talking about SEC recruiting (by the way, Bama is now up to 14, 4 star recruits, not too bad). Big 12 needs to step up, or I see more teams including OU looking else come conference realignment.

    • Super K says:

Good points Stephen. I agree the SEC branding has had a profound impact. Though I will say we probably started feeling it more recently because the SEC has expanded into our territory. Georgia recruits were almost never going to come OU regardless of conference. But it’s effected Texas recruiting.

      • Kody K. says:

Yea, you see a lot more Texas kids jumping out of the Big XII and committing to SEC schools. Bama even has one of the top safeties out of TX committed and so forth. This has definitely forced OU to expand their recruiting parameters.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

I agree with you. Some people may blow it off as nothing but the ESPN and SEC relationship is huge. The SEC signed a $2.25 billion dollar contract with ESPN. That’s a $2.25 billion dollar investment. Not looking at it from a fan’s perspective but from a financial perspective that is huge. ESPN reports sports, but they are still a company, and their main focus is profits as with any company. They aren’t a non-profit.

    • DCinAZ says:

I think the NCAA should step in and take away any conference’s ability to sell the ownership of their conference’s television network to a sports broadcasting company.

      • Tom says:

Lol, it’s because of Oklahoma and Georgia that the NCAA can’t control television rights. They sued for control in the 80’s and won….

  • Boom says:

First let me say I loved what Stoops said last year about the SEC because he hit the nail on the head. They had a good run but we need to change the cycle.

SEC comment – As much as I don’t want to acknowledge them you have to admire their core goals. Over the years, the leaders have done a great job of securing the “regional” conference with the teams and fans. Regional as in all schools are not that far from each other and fans can travel to watch games. Rivalries were not lost which makes for better college football. This is how college football should be but since Dodds decided to run the Big Texas conference, he ran off 4 “regional” schools. Dodds also ran his sports programs into the ground which hurt the conference too. This hurt our perception and in turn allowed the SEC to gain a stronger grip on college football. Hindsight is frustrating but it’s the facts we live in today. If we want to become a stronger conference who do we add that’s not a thousand miles away? Perception and reality sometimes share the same room which is what we are dealing with in the Big 12 and recruiting. Beating Bama was huge for OU & the Big 12. We just need to continue with all of our Big 12 teams beating the SEC. I would love to see us hang haf a hunard on Tennessee & Kansas State beat Auburn.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

K-State beating Auburn is a strong possibility.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

I sure hope so. I haven’t really checked into what K State will be offering next season, but if the Wizard is there, they’ll be tough. I just hope that the early going isn’t as bad on them this season as it was last…

        • EasTex says:

Auburn lost both DE’s and their DB’s. They are going to be hurting on defense, at least early.

  • Jason Vos says:

Anyone know if Joseph Paul will play as an OG or OT? My guess will be OG, but I have no actual knowledge of it.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

As much as I hate the SEC, the fact is the only way to win the SEC battle is to beat them. THE Big 12 needs to win games against them and any other team outside the conference. You want to claim to be the biggest and the toughest, well prove it. With OSU losing to Mizzou last year in the Cotton bowl, and Baylor getting beat by UCF, doesn’t help with the conferences perception. Texas sucked last year but getting stomped by Oregon didn’t help the Big 12’s image. Texas Tech, Kansas State and OU pretty much saved what little respect the conference has as a whole. The Big 12 just needs to win, no matter what the odds are, just find a way.

  • Indy_sooner says:

PJ struck me from the start as a very smart kid (Not just because he committed to us), but he was taking his time to assess things without the drama. He knows he’s a blue chip and doesn’t rub it in people’s faces… very low key. The fact that LSU is pushing for him validates his talent.

  • Zack says:

Not trying to get any details from SS subscribers but they put out a teaser suggesting haughton may not be making his decision soon.

  • blaster1371 says:

Seems like the Mayfield-Tech relationship went real cold sometime in November. Webb leading TT to their bowl win pretty much iced Mayfields chance to start again. IMO Mayfield is as good as Knight. I know that might be committing apostasy amongst the brethren but Knight still has to prove he wasn’t a one game wonder.

    • Stephen says:

I agree, Mayfield was looking pretty good at Tech and in the Spring game. Not sure if we’d have a definitive starter if he was eligible.

      • FeedtheMonster says:

I think Knight’s wheels give him the edge, but not if his passing is like it was at the beginning of last season. I don’t think we’ll see that from him again.

        • Doobie74OU says:

They say Knight was really throwing the ball well at the Manning’s QB Camp so hopefully he is continuing to improve off of that Sugar Bowl performance.

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Hopefully he can pick up on it in the game as well. Apparently he was making all the throws in practice, but was too excited or whatever once he got in to a real game.

  • Bill Duncan says:

Does it not occur to these recruits pledging to Alabama that they’re going to have enormous competition to hit the field? When they sign 4-5 star recruits every year, there isn’t enough room to go around. I’m sure some like the competition, but you’d figure they would like to sign somewhere they’ll be able to get time on the field before their junior season.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

When they get to that level, they all really believe they should be starting and starting soon regardless of competition. It’s not really much different at other elite institutions.

    • EasTex says:

      Lest we forget:

McCarron believes some of the younger players thought they
live off their previous merits, instead of working even harder
      when they get to college.

“I think that’s one of the things that is wrong with recruiting
out of high school,” said McCarron. “You have guys who
have never played the game of football rating these guys
that they are a 5-star, because they’re sitting behind a
computer screen watching their highlight film.
Well, their highlight film is supposed to be good, the last
time I checked. That’s the kind of thing that ticks me off
about recruiting and when these kids come in and they’re
5-stars and they expect to play right off the bat. It’s a little
entitlement and when they don’t play off the bat, they get
a little ticked off and they don’t want to work.”

      If he’s lyin’ he’s dyin’.

      Source.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

I doubt many of the kids noted that the SEC was 0-2 in BCS bowls last year.
The only way to beat them in the PR wars is to BEAT THEM!
A good start would be pounding Tenn, on national TV, with trendy new uniforms on, and the TV network showing promos for our stadium upgrade at every possible break.
We’d have beaten the Big, Bad Wolf and the Vols in a 4-game stretch.
Frankly, I think that could happen.

    • FeedtheMonster says:

I think all of that will happen except for the promos for the stadium. They may mention it, but I doubt they “promote” it. Headington Hall will probably get mentioned some more though.

  • Zack says:

That Kenneth Mann is a good find for Monty but he already had quite a few offers hopefully ou is a favorite for him.

  • Big Higg says:

That DE looks impressive. Looks like he separates and works down the line pretty well

    • Paul Warfield says:

I don’t know. He sure doesn’t look like he fits a three man line scheme to me. Some of the Oklahoma offers have been head scratchers from a scheme fit perspective. He looks like a four down defensive linemen in frame.

      • Boom says:

6’5″ 260 will fill out to 280/290 in college which is a good size for DE in this scheme. OU wants to get bigger at DE.

      • Zack says:

I agree right now looks like a lot like Austin English to me a DE in a 4-3 but if he got up to 260/275 he would be a good fit for the 3 man front. Also one thing to keep in mind is that mike stoops isn’t married to the 3-4 he just has personnel for that scheme right now and it may be more effective until teams start to figure out the gaps.

Also looks like ou is his first top tier offer so this kid could commit on the spot at his visit.

        • Boom says:

Zack, he’s already at 6’5 260 which is a good size for a 16/17 year old. He uses his hands really well and drives his feet well. He’s good but what I like is his potential.

          • Zack says:

            Oh ok I saw 240 on 247.

          • Super K says:

Just talked to him. He’s grown. Now up to 6’5 260 lbs. Really looks flexible in his ankles for a kid that size.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Looks like he had great balance as well. Even when pursueing down the line he didn’t get caught up in the weeds and fall or get knocked off his feet.

          • Zack says:

He looks good I only had time to watch 2 minutes here at work but he looks like he’s going to be good. It would be nice if Monty and bedenbaugh can get their numbers before the season starts so they can really just check in on the guys they have instead of trying to go everywhere and chase guys.

    • Super K says:

I like him as well! Reminds me of a kid my buddy works with down in Louisiana named Jalen Bates. OU didn’t end up offering Bates and at the time I felt they should have. But this kid is actually a little bigger than Jalen and they’ve got similar flexibility. And I agree there are points at which he seems to use his hands a little better.

    • EasTex says:

I can’t believe how long his arms are and how well he uses that leverage at such a young age.

  • DCinAZ says:

Not surprised many of those kids PJ talked to just committed to a school because it’s in the SEC. That’s all ESPN talks about and those kids want to wear that patch signifying that they’re special little snowflakes who are above the rest. That’s why they don’t handle losing well like the Collins kid from Alabama and his comments after the Sugar Bowl about us “not supposed to be on the same field with them” and how we need to “respect the SEC!” even after kicking their butts. It’s laughable, yet also sad, how these kids fall for the blatant propaganda spewed on ESPN.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

The end of your statement is the key. All of the propaganda by ESecPn is the biggest reason as to why these kids think they’re getting something special. They should honestly be ashamed of themselves. A decision on where to go to school isn’t something that every kid gets and espin is trying to make it all about them.

    • Tulsa Terry says:

PJ used his intelligence to make an informed decision that he feels will benefit him. The A&M kids at the camp he spent time with look foolish to us. But remember we need those kids from Texas and PJ does realize he’s taking a risk coming here when so many Texans went there. Maybe we lay off the PJ you’re so smart and Texans are dumb. This competition with the SEC will be an uphill battle with ESPN

  • Doobie74OU says:

It is cool the new offer is already planning to come and visit OU this weekend. It is true he did already have a lot of offers but we are his biggest offer to date. Got offers from OSU, California, and KSU. I like the fact that he was offered by KSU. They are good at taking underrated guys and getting maximum production out of them. Not that OU doesn’t but KSU HAS TOO DO IT cause they never have recruited as good as OU.

  • Shifty says:

With the offer to Mann I guess Monty isn’t waiting on guys or they are off the board

    • Doobie74OU says:

Monty doesn’t seem like he does to well with the “Wait & See” approach! He says you better get on board or get left behind!

  • SamSooner says:

The worst thing the SEC can do is believe the hype. OU showed Alabama that we can go toe-to-toe with them and walk away with a win. The SEC isn’t guaranteed anything just because they walked on the field. Let them keep thinking they are superior. Read Malcolm Gladwell’s “David and Goliath.”

Quote: The very thing that gave the giant his size was also the source of his
greatest weakness…The powerful and the strong are not always what they
    seem.

    • paganpink says:

And the narrative from the SEC backers was that the only chance OU might possibly have is because of some sort of trick play and the “anything can happen” thing. We went out and smashed them in the mouth and just flat beat them, instead!

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

It shouldn’t have been that much of a surprise. Auburn ran them up and down the field on the ground, and Texas A&M gouged them through the air.

  • SoonerPhins says:

Quick Question, any update on Ykili Ross? has he stated when he might commit? Does OU have a chance against UCLA and USC?

    • Super K says:

He’s gonna official to OU but I’ll admit it’s gonna be tough pulling him out of Cali.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Sorry posted right after you so I change my answer to “YEAH WHAT HE SAID!” lol!

        • Super K says:

Thanks for taking the time to look that up and post it. Very cool of you Doobie!

          • Doobie74OU says:

I knew you said something about Ross but couldn’t remember what so I had to look it up for myself so I thought I would bring it back for the benefit of those with memories like mine!

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Didn’t OU also hire C.J. Ahu (spelling) in some position. Do you know much about him?

    • Zack says:

Looks like he’s enjoying the process can’t blame him for that. I don’t think he commits before the season starts but I think ou should still lead.

      • DCinAZ says:

Let’s hope so. Baylor is recruiting him to play DB and he prefers offense.

        • Zack says:

And he decommitted from them so I think they were making a mistake. I know their boards were saying he wouldn’t even be 5th on their wr depth chart.

          • DCinAZ says:

I saw their amateur new-money fanbase ripping him on his decision to open up his recruitment. Yeah that’ll get him to Baylor! LOL

    • Super K says:

  • Zack says:

Humphrey said he’s going to hold off his announcement until the semper fi game. Still ok with me seems like he enjoys the recruiting process and at least he didn’t decommit from ou.

    • Gary Robbins says:

I’m sure OU will hold a spot open for him. Isn’t that game in January.

      • Zack says:

I’m sure they would too. I think newsome will carry his out awhile and I think they will end up taking 2 slot receivers. Oui did a story today about Christian Kirk wanting to check out more of what ou is about and that he will use one of his officials for ou. But I think tamu will be tough to beat for this kid.
