Open Post | Monday, Nov. 30th (UPDATE 12:58 pm)

Recruiting Trail: First of all, congrats to the Sooners for the big win Saturday night! The staff will be on the road for the next couple weeks recruiting, and we’ve started reaching out to some recruits to find out when they are expecting in-home visits with the OU coaches. One of the best things about where Oklahoma is right now is they’ll have a whole month or so to recruit off their great season (and hopefully even more time if they are able to win the national championship). – (Super K)

Chanse Sylvie and Andraez Williams in-home: OU 2016 safety commit Chanse Sylvie let us know that he is expecting the Sooners to do their in-home visit with him this Wednesday. We haven’t confirmed whether they will do an in-home with his teammate & LSU CB commit Andraez Williams, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on now that OU is back in the thick of things with Williams. – (Brandon)

Obi Eboh: Something else to keep an eye on regarding 2016 DB and Texas commit Obi Eboh (and I hate to be that guy), but I was told by a source close to Eboh that his girlfriend has been accepted to and plans to attend the University of Oklahoma. I was also told Eboh is listening to the Sooners intently and that right now the primary draw to Texas is coming from his family’s interest in the academic prestige (specifically the business school). – (Super K)

Levi Draper: If you haven’t noticed, 2017 LB and Ok State commit Levi Draper is having a pretty spectacular junior season, which includes helping lead his team to the state finals. I caught up with Draper this past weekend, after the Bedlam game, to talk about his season and the recruiting process.

Draper has been to both Stillwater and Norman this season, but he wasn’t able to make it to the Bedlam game over the weekend though he did catch the game on TV. He grew up an OU fan and liked seeing how well both schools represented the state of Oklahoma.

Draper said that he and defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks talk every week, along with defensive coordinator Mike Stoops and HC Bob Stoops. OU has continued to make progress with Draper and after speaking with him, I came away with the impression OU is definitely still in play. In fact, I think the Sooners helped themselves immensely with the big win over Oklahoma State. This one is definitely a recruitment Sooners fans should keep a close eye on. – (Brandon)

Brandon Burton: Serra (CA) has been a hotbed for some of the most talented prospects in high school football for years. It has also, however, been a recruiting pipeline for the USC Trojans. 2016 safety & OU offer Brandon Burton is another in a long line of Serra star players, and TFB had the chance to catch up with him Sunday night.

Burton shared that OU outside WRs coach Dennis Simmons is expected to stop by his school for a visit on Thursday. He also said that Bob Stoops is planning to try and stop by for an in-home visit as well. Burton says he and the Sooners staff talk “ quite often” and that he is still highly considering them. Other schools also under consideration include: UCLA, Stanford, Stanford, Arizona, Ohio State & Florida State.

This OU staff have been adamant about taking great athletes that can play multiple positions on defense, and Burton definitely fits that mold. – (Brandon)

Rahssan Thornton: I caught up with 2016 DE/OLB & LSU commit Rahssan Thornton (Killeen, TX) yesterday. He let me know the Sooners have been in contact with him pretty heavily of late. Thornton has not yet visited Oklahoma, but did say he hopes to do so for an official visit at some point.

Thornton does have family ties to Louisiana (parents are from New Orleans) and Texas has been recruiting him heavily for quite some time. But with LSU, TAMU and Texas all having lackluster seasons, you get the sense OU’s staff smells blood, and you’ll be hearing more and more names that you either haven’t heard before or haven’t heard in a while. – (Super K)

Nice work guys. You get the sense that this is a year to capitalize on. New facilities, new energy, CFP and championship opportunity. Gotta go out and get ’em while the gettins good.

Time for a new cup of coffee.

Having the week off to recruit is pretty awesome, hopefully we have a boom or two this week.

    • paganpink says:

Isn’t that the truth? What an enormous advantage we have over the conferences who have conference championships that no one ever considers!

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Also just saw Pat Haden removed the Interim tag on Clay Helton

    • Brian says:

Met Clay’s parents one time…Great people, really happy for him. His dad played at Florida with Spurrier. Told him I was an OU fan and he said, “Oh we know Bobby.”

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Seems like a good dude, but I’m not sure I see this working out. Maybe they put out feelers, and just didn’t feel like there were any good options out there. Maybe they are hoping this works out until they can make a run at Chip Kelly.

  • j l says:

Anyone else notice we climbed up to 12th(+10) in turnover margin? I remember looking earlier in the season, and we were ranked in the 80’s.

Defense getting it done, offense fixed the fumble issues, and baker has been incredible keeping the ball safe.

definitely did not expect baker to have 43 total td to 5 int this season, what a freaking stud!

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

improved OL play has helped too

      • Zack says:

Inserting samia and will Johnson were the keys to changing the direction of the team.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

          absolutely

        • Birddawg says:

Will Johnson has held his own.
          1) Why didn’t he get the start at the beginning of the season..
          2) Love the way he fights through blocks.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Maybe he wasn’t ready early on. Maybe he needed to learn the defense, and learn to play more consistently. I agree he has been huge though. D is much better after putting him in the starting lineup. And I think it’s made Parker better too. He seems to be in a position to make more plays as well.

          • Birddawg says:

Parker is playing his natural position.
            Great move indeed.

          • Mysterio1 says:

Many times we just don’t know? Maybe the LIGHT Bulb just went on? Some player’s just take longer to buy in.
I look for Westbrook to really blow up next season.

          • Indy_sooner says:

Personal take/ counter to Q#1: The coaches continued to evaluate the talent they had and made the changes in time to salvage the season. That alone is magnitudes beyond where we were last year. Same as the use of run game in the first half vs post-Tx.

          • Zack says:

I think early on they had more faith in Byrd at safety and Parker at nickel. But as practices continued they got to see more of Johnson and also more of Byrd not understanding the communication.

      • j l says:

Absolutely. Hard not to be excited with 3 youngsters there too, bodes well for the future.

    • Indy_sooner says:

All that with 30+ sacks. The guy is transcendent. (Not meant as a swipe at the OL, BTW)

  • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

if im a recruit thats going to osu and im offered by ou i would ask myself why on gods green earth would i wanna play against a ou team that routinely busts osu over the head?????

  • Mizuno44 says:

Bob Stoops quote excerpted from the end of season press conference on January 6, 2015:

“I just want to also say I’m more determined than ever to get Oklahoma back in the position to competing for national championships like we have so many other times. My dedication and commitment has been questioned before in the last few weeks, and I promise you I’m as dedicated and committed as I ever have been since the day I walked in here. I have a lot invested in this program and no one cares about it more than I do, and I’m anxious and excited moving forward to make improvements and get us back in the position where we’re
competing for national championships like we have so many other times.”

I really like it when people make promises, and keep them. Thanks Coach Stoops!

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Still eating my crow about Mike. I thought Mike might be the end of Bob, luckily he knows better than me.

      • Mizuno44 says:

        You and me both..

      • MrBigsby says:

Same here. Tastes much better washed down with Poke tears though!

      • I think one thing that really helped this situation (which could also have hurt it) was the closeness of the brothers. I think Mike listened to Bob and they worked out something that would keep Mike on staff, be an active part of the game and stay together. While they are both intense, BS seems to have a better head at problem solving and I think this worked out good for the brothers and for OU.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I never had any doubts. People saying Bob didn’t care anymore, well, I just couldn’t understand that. Bob is a competitive guy. The guys on his staff are competitive guys. No way he was just going to stay at OU and go thru the motions. No way Joe C. would let that happen.

      • Mizuno44 says:

Me neither, just cool to reflect on the “then and now” aspect

      • I never doubted Bob cared. I was concerned about his great commitment to his coaching staff. On the one hand you have to like it that he is reluctant to blame his assistants like so many head coaches do. But on the other hand I was afraid that commitment might keep him from making changes that needed to be made. He did a great job and I know that it was a very difficult decision for him because he was very close to some of the guys he let go.

      • DrewChubbs says:

I know I can’t speak for others, but my impression is that it wasn’t concern about whether Bob cared or not, so much as a general feeling of complacency. I, personally, was never one to call out Bob (or even Mike or anyone, really), but I noticed recently (after the 2010 Conf title) that maybe he wasn’t just the same ol’ Fiery Bob on the sidelines. And honestly, he looked rather annoyed at times last season, instead of maybe having the look in his eye that he was gonna roll the sleeves up. That is noticeably different this season. You can see the determination in his eyes. At least, that has been my observation over the last few years.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

He also has a different demeanor on the sideline this year in that he isn’t constantly yelling like he was last year. I think he realized this year, that teaching was better. (Not including at officials, that is just a given for a coach).

          • Boom says:

            Yep, that must’ve been it.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I have never been one of the people saying “fire Stoops” (either Bob or Mike). My only thought at the end of last season was that they had to make a change at QB because putting 9 people in the box was stopping OUr offense. And Trevor showed over and over that he wasn’t quite ready for prime time. Not that I am bagging on Trevor, I think a lot of the young man.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Something I have seen commented only occasionally was that Bob had hip replacement surgery last year. Apparently he was in quite a bit of pain before hand. I wonder if that may have contributed to his lack of focus. If you’ve ever been in a great deal of pain, it can certainly distract you.

          • DrewChubbs says:

I can certainly believe that. Caring for 100 young men and all the other associated people is a daunting task. If your personal health is ailing, that could only complicate matters.

    • Kevin says:

We probably don’t give enough credit to the challenge of sustaining success over such a long period of time. Every time it seems like Stoops is slipping, he seems to bring OU back into contention. There have been tons of articles lately citing how Stoops has more 10+-win seasons than anyone else during his tenure. We’re definitely spoiled…now let’s get another NC!

      • Mysterio1 says:

        Very Spoiled!,……and I like that! : )

        • Golfluvr13 says:

Spoiled indeed and I love this quote from Mike Stoops:

“Our standards are excessively high. If you come to Oklahoma, hopefully you have those same standards,” Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “Nine (Big 12) championships in 17 years. I don’t know of many people that have done that. We are held to a different standard. The media holds us to a different standard, and that’s how it is. And that’s OK because we are Oklahoma.”

Very nice. I was very unhappy how last season ended. I always wanted Mike back in Norman. I was really worried that the game had passed him by. He just didn’t seem to know what to do with the Spread?
Glad he didn’t step down like most were demanding.

  • OUn8v says:

Thanks for the info, gentlemen !

  • Matt says:

Guys I’ve been super confident in our team all year and have believed they would win the national championship since the Tech game. But now i’m getting nervous and remembering how great the ’08 offense was and how they got shut down when they faced a truly elite defense in Florida. What makes this team different when they face Bama and that nasty d-line? Is our O-line physical and talented enough to take them on?

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

the real question to me is, can OU stop Derrick Henry. If so Bama can’t do anything else. OU would win a low scoring game.

      • Eddie and Amber says:

Actually all year long bama has set up the big play after punishing the defense with Henry. Henry’s gonna get his yards on us, I just hope our DB’s don’t get sucked up to the line and get beat deep. Bama’s play-action is pretty salty.

        • Birddawg says:

I would say that’s always been their scheme.
          Run to setup the PA.
          Alabama’s offense is beatable.
          Mediocre QB.
          Mediocre WRs
          Veteran Oline vs Veteran Dline.
Stop the Run and force the QB to throw it downfield against our DBs who have done exceptionally well this year.

      • Eddie and Amber says:

      • Birddawg says:

IMO, our dline matches up well with the Alabama oline.
Its our undersized LBs fitting in the gap to stop that 6’3 240 rb.
Henry falls forward everytime. easy 3 yds. (perine)
Attacking him before the LOS and keeping him from getting momentum. ( Bama did to fournette)

      • rainydaze114 says:

I’m cool with putting 7 in the box and leaving our DBs on an island. They’ve proved they can cover the best WRs in the game so I’m not too worried about that. Just gotta slow Henry down a little bit… because you don’t stop him. If OU can make Alabama try to keep up, then OU will eventually pull away IMO.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

stopping Henry means keeping him to around 100 and less than 2 scores. OU does that and they win 27-14

          • SamSooner says:

If they won’t to run him 50 times, let them do it. We can rotate 6 or 7 DLs, so wearing down won’t be an issue.

          • rainydaze114 says:

OU will score more than 4 TDs. I honestly like the way OU matches up with Bama more than any other potential opponent. OU puts 40+ on them most likely.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

I like Bama’s DL, scoring 27 on them means 3 TDs and 2 FGs. That’s a solid day. If OU hangs 40 on that D, no way whoever they play in the NCG stands a chance.

          • SamSooner says:

This has nothing to do with my hate for Bama: this is objective: after watching Bama’s defense, I’m not impressed. They aren’t any better that what OU has faced. Look at all of the teams in the Big XII who have great DLs and consider that OU has held them in check.

          • rainydaze114 says:

I have a hard time believing they’re that much better than their ’13 team. TK9 and Co put 38 on that team with Brennan Clay as the feature back. OU arguably has twice the playmakers on O this season.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

I agree with both but Im telling you their DL is good. Better than any OU has played this year. If OU can pass protect they will win, because their secondary isn’t great but gets picks because of pressure. Auburn had guys open all day. It’s all about pass protection.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

They are better in the front 7, and more diverse in the secondary. An announcer said the other day during their game with Auburn that they play guys now in the secondary that are better at coverage, and not as many traditional safeties. The announcer actually said it’s like they are playing 4 corners at times now.

What happened a couple of years ago has zero to do with this season’s potential matchup. Different players, different teams, and different motivations.

          • Rene Goupillaud says:

Announcer needs to take a look at where some of those guys are today – NFL. You learn to cover from experience. Since they don’t have any excellent passers in the SEC, hard to say how good these guys are.

          • Just looked at the top passing leaders this year. SEC only has 3 in the top 60, Ole Miss at 9, Ark at 24 and Miss St at 17 (AL is 61). OU has played against 6 of the top 20, which included Tulsa, TT, WVU, OSU and TCU. OU is #18. Bama got beat by Ole Miss, which is the best passing team in the SEC.

          • soonerthunder says:

Maybe. When a team has several weeks to prepare for an opponent they can be very prepared and show new things OU’s O isn’t expecting and has never seen them do before. Many times as a result there are low scoring games. However, I will say OU’s O can make adjustments and has a pretty good little offense.

        • SamSooner says:

No more than six will do. Be stout in the front four, make him run laterally, and gang tackle.

        • Katyboomer says:

Also Shannon is a great run stopper, I think we may see a 4-3 if we end up playing Bama

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Nick Satan will test JT and Sanchez with bubble screens. We had trouble tackling Amari. Remember? We haven’t had trouble with it this year.

      • Indy_sooner says:

We have been excellent in run defense thus far, solid tackles- That being said, we haven’t played anyone with the equivalent of Perine in Henry. It would be a slugfest for sure

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yes and in that kind of game, take the better QB

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Tackling will play a major role in the success we have or don’t have vs the Bama offense. Our LB’s will have to play a good game, and tackle well. Might be a good game for Shannon, given his size.

      • Clay Davis says:

He was tough to stop in 2013, and probably would have won that Sugar Bowl with him if Bama hadn’t tried to feature McCarron so much early. This year we have a lot more depth at D-line.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

He just sees the hole and is hard to tackle. It’ll be up to the DL to get penetration to hobble him and the LB’s will have to clean up. Exactly what Bama did to Leonard Fournette.

      • Rick says:

Henry is a great back, he will undoubtedly break a few runs, but… When you’re a one dimensional offense, that also makes you very predictable. It will look something like, run big back left, run big back right, short incomplete pass, punt.

    • Dustin says:

We’ll be 100% healthy this time around.

    • SamSooner says:

Well, I offer this: (1) We didn’t have DeMarco Murray. (2) There should have been a targeting call when Emmanuel Johnson took a head-to-head blow. (3) OU was just unlucky: 4 trips inside the 20 and come away with 3 points. That score should have been 35-3 at half time.

As for Bama, they are about as one-dimensional as any team looking to get into the playoffs. Did you see the arrogance on Saban’s face when asked about Henry carrying the ball 47 times on Saturday? That poor kid is going to be worn down and that strategy is going to get Bama beat. I can’t see Henry running the ball on OU that many time and be effective. That plays into OU hand.

OU has faced some pretty good defenses. Bama doesn’t offer anything more than what OU has already faced. So, I won’t concede to them and give them that kind of respect. Bama can and will get beat. I refuse to believe that Bama wins by showing up. As much as everyone wants to believe that Saban has made offensive changes by adding Kiffin, don’t fall for it. Look at what USC does. It’s “Big Boy” football.

      I’m not impressed.

OU wins out. Put it in the books. After January 11, it will be #NineIsFine.

      • j l says:

One of the main reasons bama backs suck in the NFL. They are ran into the ground before they ever get there.

        • SamSooner says:

You are right. Auburn kept him in check until they wore down. OU won’t have that problem. The only thing I want to see the DL do is get penetration on run plays, as well as passing plays. If Walker can push the OL 2-3 yards deep, that will kill Henry’s forward momentum.

          • j l says:

I only worry about our defense wearing down if we face 80+ plays on defense, and bama dosent have that kind of tempo.

Henry is a good back, i think he will hit 125ish yards on us, but i have no faith in coker at all.

          • SamSooner says:

Bama, won’t run more than 60-65 plays. Plus, OU is too deep on the DL. We will be able to sub at will. We won’t be playing a Baylor or TCU or TT.

          • j l says:

Ya, itll be nice to face a “normal” offense after seeing the last 3 we have played.

Kiffin would be smart to up the tempo on us, but hey, its kiffin.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

The problem with that is we are built/designed to stop those offenses, not what Bama runs. Doesn’t mean we can’t do both, or that we won’t have success, but it’ll be a totally different animal we’re facing. And the Bama D will face the same problem. They are built to defend against the spread more now than 2 or 5 years ago, but they are still built to go against typical SEC offenses.

It really is an interesting battle from that standpoint…..both teams play the game at opposite ends of the spectrum. It’s a matchup I hope to see, I just hope we see it in the second game, and not in round 1.

          • j l says:

im 100% more confident in playing them this year than i was in the sugar.

          • Me too. And remember, we run the offense that Saban wants outlawed! He would only say that if he was scared of it. He knows teams who spread the field and force him to not play 8 men in the box creates all kinds of problems for his defense. And my bet is that they still don’t have anyone who can block Stryker!

          • j l says:

And saban is a down and distance defensive coach. Our tempo wont let him swap guys in and out, which is what makes him so effective.

          • Exactly. That was what he was whining about. Of course he was saying it would cause injuries, but the fact is tempo kills him.

          • BigJoeBrown says:

You bring up a good point…we have been blessed with Diron Renolds producing quality depth inregards to technique and toughness along the d-line.

          • SamSooner says:

If you’ve read anything I’ve posted here, you know I’m always optimistic. After surviving the Big XII offenses, this team has already been tested. I’m supremely confident.

          • OmorganU says:

They will run Henry until we get up 2-3 touchdowns and then we force them to throw to keep up. That’s the best way to take Henry out of the game.

      • Scott says:

We cant forget that Henry will half to play a great Florida Defense. Coker will half to use his arm to win.

    • rainydaze114 says:

OU didn’t have Demarco Murrary for that game. He was a gamebreaker and his absence is what doomed OU… not Florida’s D.

      • SamSooner says:

OU missed him on kickoff returns and in the backfield.

Yep. I can’t believe we didn’t score more than we did.

          • BigJoeBrown says:

Yeah, I remember the numerous goal line opportunites OU had but just couldn’t punch it in. Twice we were 1st and goal and couldn’t get it in and got a turnover on downs.

I figure he was good for a couple TDs easy… that would have won the game for OU.

      • SamSooner says:

OU missed him on kickoff returns and in the backfield.

      • Indy_sooner says:

This. Chris Brown is good but he’s no Murray. After that lick by Major Wright, the WR game was done

        • SamSooner says:

          I can’t believe that wasn’t called.

        • PLAW0720 says:

That would have been targeting in today’s game and was PI in that game. How can a db make contact before the wr touches the ball? Smh

          • SamSooner says:

I think they were calling “head-to-head” back then and the DB arrived early. And that punch that was thrown by Spikes, their LB, that wasn’t called. He was a nasty player. That’s the same year he gouged the eyes of the Georgia RB.

          • Brad Warren says:

Afterwards, Spikes said we were dirtiest team he’d ever faced. Lol. What a moron.

          • cdzendolet says:

Every time I see that, it boggles my mind how it wasn’t called as PI. Got there like a second before the ball and just straight up tackled him

          • Indy_sooner says:

I agree. But it’s one of those plays where Fl was determined to shut our air game down. Manny was not the same after that hit

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

One of the worst calls ever because it was done out in the open! We made mistakes. Iglesias drops a deep pass that turns into an interception, holding by the OL, Bradford int at the 1.

    • Brad Warren says:

We took on Bama and that “nasty” D with Trevor Knight as qb and Brennan Clay as our feature back! Lol.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Sam has some really good points below. And when/if we face Bama, I don’t expect anything other than a close game. They are a good team. They are well coached. They’ll have a chip on their shoulder from the last time we played. They’ve “been there” recently. I think OU has a good chance of winning the matchup, but I don’t expect to roll them. They might be the one team that can put pressure on both of our lines.

      • SamSooner says:

The thing that really impresses me is not that the offense is moving the ball. It’s the fact that LR seems to have a different playbook each week. None of sets from the plays he runs seem to be the same. I am not able to predict what he will run as much as I did Heuple.

        • Birddawg says:

          I concur..
          LR has creativity.
Also, his play calling has rhythm. Every play serves a purpose.

        • Kevin says:

I love that it’s little tweaks that he does that makes a difference in the offensive attack…seems like the only way Heupel did a new playbook was to design new formations with 1-2 plays, and if they didn’t work he’d go back to the default stuff that was so predictable.

        • Heuple (and I really like the guy) made it easy – if we pick up 7-9 yards for 3-5 carries, then we are going to pass the next 3-4 downs until we don’t have the ball anymore. Or, if we complete 6 in a row and get inside the 20, we are going to run the next 4-5 right up the middle even if they have 9 guys stacked in there.

      • Rick says:

We caught Alabama before, short on DB’s due to injury. All of the DB’s at Bama are 4-5 star recruits, so it’s not like they were scraping the barrell to find a player. Maybe somewhat inexperienced, but not a scrub player. We caught Alabama over confident. They are always told they are the best (that money can buy). Striker caught Big K flat footed, made him look pretty bad with his amazing 1st step and speed. We caught Alabama making excuses after the fact of “Oh we can’t seem to get up for anything less than a NC game”. I’m with Sam, if we can get up by 2-3 td’s, it will be all over. They are not a come from behind, hurry up offense. They are a lumbering giant. OUr team is exactly the match up they don’t need.

        • True, their DB’s are all 4 and 5 star, however, they rarely see a team that throws the ball well. The SEC has been down for a long time now with QB’s who can really throw the ball well. Last one I can remember that was a great passer was named Manning. I think their DB’s are focused on being run-stoppers. Not that they are not gifted athletes, but when you don’t see great passing all year it is really hard to all of a sudden become great cover guys.

        • Also, Bama had the great wide receiver when we played them last time (can’t remember his name). They don’t even have a good one this year.

      • Kevin says:

If we get matched against Bama, we should have Knight and Mayfield switch unis and have Mayfield start in Knight’s jersey.

      • SamSooner says:

        Yep.

      • Clay Davis says:

We had the HUNH in 2008. But as long as we stay healthy leading up to the playoff, we are a lot more creative on offense than 2008. Plus Mayfield is more mobile than Sam which creates more stress on the defense.

    • Maui Sooner says:

We lost Demarco M before the Florida championship game. With Perrine, Mixon and Mayfield as running threats we are far more diverse on offense than we were in 2008 without our star RB and a QB that was a great passer but not mobile. On defense we had lost our star MLB which is where Florida attacked us.

    • bryan says:

Elite? from our first play u could see that the refs wanted no part of us using the up tempo . that is one game I felt the refs owned us .

    • Pokerman says:

Biggest difference is that we have a really good defense this year to complement our offense.

    • I don’t know that our OL is the key although they will at least need to hold their own. I think the key is the fact that we have 3 running backs (including Mayfield in this) to their one and we have a very good passing game to their no passing game at all.

    • Scott says:

      They had TEBOW

      • Matt says:

good point. This year we have Mayfield who I think is Tebow 2.0 in terms of his leadership/ effect on a team. He could be the difference that wins title #8

  • Sooner Ray says:

Great info, if we can’t recruit right now it’s just not going to happen. I expect this signing class to be one of the best for its size.

You crack me up. What’s up, Dustin?

Did you see the game? /s

      • Gary Robbins says:

I was quoting a New York senator who said that in 1831.
Probably should have used the word “belongs”.

        • Zack says:

Gary how many recruits do we have room for? Do you see anyone leaving?

          • Mysterio1 says:

You might see some players leave that realize that they won’t see much of the field. They have been recruited over.

          • Gary Robbins says:

From what I’ve read 18-22. OU had something like 15 Seniors. Maybe Ross(playing time), Westbrook (draft-family reasons), Sanchez(draft) would all leave. In the summer a lot of athletes mess up and get dismissed. Why would you want to leave OU with their positive outlook for next year? My final guess would be 20 and we have 11 already with 2 or 3 silent commits. OU is getting close to the filled up point.

          • Zack says:

I think we lose 12 scholarship seniors this year. Plus we may be at 84 right now, last I heard we were at 83 then Baxter got his scholarship. My guess is 5 or 6 leave for either draft or transfer. So I see 18-19. Maybe we over sign though and take on more and try to manipulate the signing numbers.
I will say that if we take more than 18, then the coaches know some players are leaving. I think they always expect a few to leave but I’m saying they might know for sure who is leaving or not.

          • Gary Robbins says:

I was just thinking seniors instead of scholarships. At 18 OU is going to tell some excellent players that we just don’t have enough room. Getting in the final 4 is going to help a ton. Both sides of the line should be great next year. I am sure they are looking for that 1 outstanding wr next year to go with what we have.

  • Brad Warren says:

Hey check this out, I sent video of fan trying to trip Mixon to Mike Holder. He replied immediately. Pretty cool.

  • Kevin says:

I think this team just seems to have that underdog tenacity that they had to step up and beat Bama a couple years ago…but with even more talent, depth, and better schemes. I’m confident that this team has the potential to win the big one, but still somewhat cautious since none of the top teams are going to be cakewalks. One game at a time!

    • True, but I like our chances vs Alabama especially. They ran the ball like 45 out of 63 plays vs Auburn. I do not think they have a passing game at all. We will be more balanced and our defense will keep them out of the end zone enough to beat them a couple of touchdowns. Much like the last game with them. Running back gets a couple of big plays, but they have no passing game to go with it. (matter of fact no team in the SEC has a passing game that I can think of).

  • Kelly Gurbcock says:

Hi, I’m Mike Holder and tripping people is bad! Pew Pew! lulz

  • rainydaze114 says:

So… OU is a lock. The B1G winner is a lock. What happens if Bama and Clemson both lose this weekend? UNC gets in? tOSU? Stanford?

    • Gary Robbins says:

You talk about an uproar if they both lose. Somebody gonna be mad.

    • Mr. Jones says:

I think Stanford would be in if they beat USC. Not sure after that though.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I think winning your conference is a HUGE factor. So if that happened, you’d have to compare North Carolina, Florida, and Stanford. I’d be inclined to say NC and Stanford would make it at that point, though I do fear that if Iowa lost to MSU, they and Ohio State would also be under consideration. According to the Playoff language though, it would have to be obvious that they are better than one of the teams that won a conference. Same argument ND was going to have to win.

    • Malicong says:

If Clemson falls North Carolina gets in. If Florida wins, it is up in the air. I don’t see Ohio St getting in over a conference champion but it is certainly in play. Iowa and Ohio St just doesn’t have a good enough resume to overcome the one loss. With two losses, Stanford has looked better and played a much tougher schedule than anyone from the B1G (regardless of opening the season losing to Northwestern). No way Florida gets in over Stanford. They looked terrible against bad teams.

Auburn. But Auburn doesn’t have the horses.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

the fighting Sumlins are similar, but their running game is terrible OU’s is not

      • Matt says:

Their pass game seems to be a lot more dink and dunk than ours too

        • Boom says:

ATM had no QB or leadership this year which killed them.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

yeah they want Spavital fired because of it, but Allen is always facing 3rd and 8 or longer so he doesnt have time to throw

          • j l says:

One of the reasons they want spav gone, is because they are always in 3rd and long lol.

How can you keep sending OT’s in the 1st round of the draft and not be able to run the ball?

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

well they need RBs, evidence they keep taking OUs transfers because they don’t have anyone capable of being THE GUY

          • j l says:

They get some decently ranked RB’s. Either they cant develop them, or they are doing terrible projecting with their recruiting.
Neither possibility is good for the OC, lol.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

If they cant run with Keith Ford next year, I don’t know what to tell them

          • j l says:

          • Clint Lenard says:

They’ll convert him to a CB like they did with Williams…because their run game is so great.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

truth is, to this point Sumlin hasn’t won big with his own players yet

      • Matt says:

I think the chaos that Mayfield can create is Bama’s kryptonite on top of everything else our offense does

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah Bama reminds me of OU a lot where a mobile QB that can throw typically causes problems. Mayfields scrambles for first down the last 3 games are really the difference in the games.

          • Matt says:

but our defense hasn’t had as big of a problem with mobile QB’s this year right?

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Nope Bond and Striker have done a great job keeping them in the pocket then breaking down for the sack

          • Matt says:

yeah i think this pass rush is going to get ugly against a sit in the pocket offense like Bama’s

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

just have to be able to get some stops on Henry and force third and longs and OU will be just fine

    • Boom says:

      Ole Miss which beat them

    • Daryl says:

I am pretty sure A&M and Auburn do as well. Though neither team was very good this year, but they do run that offense.

      • Birddawg says:

Yea, but they haven’t played a QB that is nearly as good as Baker.
Makes a huge difference when you got a guy that can diagnose a defense quickly and get the ball out of his hands in a hurry.

      • Recondo says:

I don’t think any SEC team does what we do, precisely. There are certainly similarities across all Air Raid teams but there are noticeable differences. aTm runs a pass-first version. Auburn runs a lot of read option, rather than run/pass option. Tennessee is much the same as Auburn but even more run heavy. I think the fact we can move in a lot of ways matches up much better, even though I admit Bama’s defense if very good. I think the more important matchup is our defense can shut down the run and Bama has no other offensive outlet.

        • Daryl says:

Ya I agree with you on it all. The only thing I don’t like about matching up with Bama is that I feel their biggest strength is for sure their front 7 on D and our weakest link is our OL.

Also I still love watching when we beat Bama in sugar bowl but I also have nightmares about Derrick Henry just destroying us every time he touche the ball that game. I never understood why they didn’t give him the ball 30 times in that game. BUT different year different teams. It could be a great game.

    • hOUligan says:

Think Saban is already having night sweats and visions of Jonny Football running and improvising against his team? But this time it’s a QB who is a much better passing QB.

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

FWIW, with all the HC openings, Smart may not be their DC by the time the playoff starts. And Kiffin may not be the OC.

      • MoJoOkie says:

Not worried about that, but I’d bet Lincoln Riley’s stock is pretty high right now as well. That’s what concerns me.

        • Recondo says:

I agree his stock is high and there a bundle of job opening but I think we keep him at least one more season. The boosters seem willing to pony up the $$$ for him.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

He obviously has a bright future, but I don’t see him being looked at seriously for any of the top jobs. With the way his stock is soaring, in a year or two he could land a very good HC gig. I don’t know that that type of job is out there for him just yet. Once he has some more big-time type experience it will be a different story. If he’s willing to be a HC at a mid-major, then he can leave whenever he wants.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

To be fair, outside of Mike Stoops landing at Arizona, has any recent OU assistant landed anything that can remotely be considered a top job? TT is okay. Indiana and KU aren’t good. Where did Long go, SDSU? Wonder where he is now?

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

            Long is back in Norman.

If you’ll notice though, most of the really good jobs don’t go to coordinators. Fifteen or twenty years ago that wasn’t necessarily the case, but it’s all high-stakes now. AD’s like to see a little HC’ing experience before they pull the trigger on a guy. Too much money, too much risk.

      • Golfluvr13 says:

I didn’t think Kiffin was their OC, do they have co-oc’s?

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Yep, that certainly cannot hurt, and was something I was thinking about the other day. Seems like OU had similar distractions during some of our BCS games in the past.

      • soonerthunder says:

Great point! I wish they both would get other jobs. That would hurt. It’s not the same as Riley. Riley’s not going anywhere yet; he’ll be here at least 3 years b/f he goes anywhere. Wow! hope they get hired elsewhere AND hope some are worried about the draft and getting hurt.

Me too. Because if not, my love for fiction would become all-consuming, to the point that I would slip into a solipsistic delusion in which my yearning for a single redeeming quality would become alight and burn in a self-made plot of self-destruction.

It’s not the icky dark stuff, that I wondered about. We have never met, but listening to “your” writing I would suspect you more in the humor and action and adventure dude, and I’m in no way knocking the style you mentioned. It obviously has it’s place and is there for a reason, I just didn’t picture you in my mind into the heavy stuff. I use reading as an escape at times, I want a story where the hero struggles, sometimes mightly, but perservers none the less. My real world has enough heavy stuff to suffice. I enjoy your comments, and I know if we ever did meet, we would instantly be friends.

          • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Oh, I definitely love the silly nonsense. You talked me into it. I’ll order both. I love the way he can meld humor and extreme drama into a page, sometimes I find myself laughing, then on the edge of my seat in the next sentence. Love his books.

Give me Kelly and Cleveland if I can have any one recruit on each side of the ball, that we have a realistic shot at. WR has me scared, though I’m guessing the coaches can whip some of the guys we currently have into shape by next season. Still, I’d love to have a guy like Cleveland come in and start from day 1.

        • Daryl says:

Shepherd will be impossible replace, but Andrews will play more and I think we will see more Quick as well. I know he didn’t do a ton this year but it seems every time quick catches the ball he makes good things happen. Also I felt like Westbrook really began to play well late, but we missed him on a lot of deep balls.

    • Brien Brown says:

KJ with your inside knowledge and with everything you have posted is there any kids that we are recruiting that OU is saying is a must get mean outside of us fans and the kids we really want. Or any inside information on kids to keep an eye out on and for that matter who would you like to see us land?

  • EasTex says:

    Thanks for the updates, guys.
It certainly is an exciting time for OU and I hope the enthusiasm is felt by the recruits.

    • Boom says:

      We’ll beat them again.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Briles had help from his sister spying – he would have to share the honor with her.

    • Recondo says:

That name should not be mentioned alongside Lincoln Riley. 1) We beat him head-to-head. 2) He was friggin’ suspended this season! How is that clown even eligible. Besides, his daddy is the one calling the shots, not that idiot.

    • paganpink says:

Kendal Briles is just doing what his daddy tells him. Lincoln Riley was handed a scotch taped, patched up offense that was so predictable at times that fans were able to callout the next play from their seats in the stadium and was simply told to “fix it.” Which body of work is more impressive!?

  • Christian Taylor says:

I just thought of something. You guys don’t happen to know who’s recruiting our old pal Justice Hansen do you?

  • KJ1123 says:

So I just now finally got to watch the game in it’s entirety and the one thing that absolutely stood out, was the absence of yet another NFL caliber defensive lineman against our OL that was tabbed as the worst in the nation after the RRS. Ogbah played almost the whole game over Samia and got absolutely shut down. When he got switched over to Browns side he didnt have much luck there either. Both Samia and Brown have really made their case for some post season awards. Football is a team sport of course, but Samia getting full time duties over St john has been a HUGE payoff and something that is quietly realized by the media. Someone call his Samia’s uncle and thank him for getting the kid ready to contribute to the 2015 Sooners.

    • rphokc says:

in the post-game radio, teddy lehman said similar things about the young olinemen and the improvement over the season…….real credit to bb

    • MoJoOkie says:

I noticed Ogbah one time in the game pressuring Mayfield. Also, I don’t know if it was Ogbah on Brown’s side during Perine’s TD run, but whoever was there, Brown annihilated; pushed his man all the way over to Samia’s side of the field.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl will start at 3 and 7pm central time. Would they really start the Cotton Bowl at 3, and the Orange at 8 (local time)? I’m going to be in Dallas for work that day, but cutting out early enough to make a 3pm start just isn’t possible.

  • Rick says:

Don’t know if you guys caught this but, Ryan Parker, OUr Juco commit from Tyler JC, moved up to a full 4 star rating this year, depending on the service you read, he’s either #1 or #2 for the top juco receiver in the nation.

Poor Rudolph, If anyone knows how to put it up without clicking on the link, then by all means have at it. No pun intended unless you are a osu fan.

He is definitely into Rudolph that’s for sure.

    • Bob Edwards says:

One should always ask, “when I am applying for that management position with the six figure salary, would I want people to find picture of what I am doing on the Internet?”

OK, last one. There are some great minds out there to make these things up.

  • Chris White says:

Eboh I’m pretty sure OU has a very good business school as well! http://www.ou.edu/content/price/about_price.html

  • Daryl says:

I heard that Mike Stoops stopped in with Al and Treber after the game and that it was classic. Anyone know where we can find audio on that?

  • KJ1123 says:

I just caught a glimpse of Frison on one of the Soonersports vids, that kids gotten big.

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

    lol

    • Sooner Ray says:

I read some of that yesterday, totally hilarious. Major butt hurt.

    • thebigdroot says:

They piped in more of their band than I actually heard. In fact, every time the OU band started to play they would start playing music over the speakers to drown them out. But yes the Sooner fans and band had taken over shortly after halftime. Heck there was empty seats everywhere by that time as well.

    • Hotrod33 says:

Then they wonder why we call them lil sister. LMAO!!!!! Mommy, mommy please tell Norman to stop making fun of me. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! They don’t deserve respect from anybody. Earn the mother f***er.

    • Zack says:

Sure does seem like bedenbaugh might reel this kid in. I thought we would only take 3 OL so I wonder if we may be over signing at that position with 2 of them being jucos and possible qualification issues.
I think at this point it looks like frison is welcome to stay and since he didn’t leave, I would imagine he will choose to stay.

    • rphokc says:

pancake it is……..watched most of his highlight link and I think everyone he was pitted against ended up on their ass in quick fashion………if bb can land this guy, he should get a raise to $15/hr!

  • Chris White says:

Love this guy, I think he enjoys his life away from ESPN
