Open Post | Weekend, Oct. 30th – Nov 1st (UPDATE Fri., 11:41 am)

Image of Casey Thompson via Norman Transcript

– Bryce Youngquist: The Rancho Cucamonga (CA) 2016 linebacker and current OU commit was in Norman this past weekend for his official visit and left saying “it definitely solidified things in my mind.” Following the visit, Youngquist told TFB he had a great time in Norman and was hosted by fellow LB, Jordan Evans. “Evans was real cool. He showed me around and we went to eat at Coach Stoops’ house for breakfast on Sunday morning. That house is amazing! The experience was a blessing, overall.”

Younquist remains one of the more athletic LBs in this 2016 class, so the Sooners doing their part to reinforce his decision in picking OU was obviously a good thing. Younquist closed by saying this recent visit will be the only time he can make it to Norman this season, but he can’t wait to enroll and start preparing for the 2016 season. – (Brandon)

– Casey Thompson: As many of you know, Thompson comes from a long line of Sooners. His father, Charles, and brother, Kendal, both donned the crimson and cream at some point during their respective college careers, and some believe the younger Thompson may just might be the best yet.

The 2018 Southmoore quarterback has burst onto the scene after a stellar freshman year and hasn’t disappointed thus far during his sophomore campaign with 2700 all-purpose yards, 31 touchdowns to just three interceptions. So it’s no surprise that schools from all over the country are starting to pursue him. In fact, Thompson already boasts offers from Oklahoma State, SMU, Arkansas State and Oregon State. Another school that has come on as of late is Clemson, who Thompson says he plans to visit in the near future.

However, I caught up with Thompson the other day to see where things stand with OU. To which Thompson said he and OU offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley speak often. Riley is planning to be in attendance to watch Thompson in person next week when Southmoore faces off against Norman North. Thompson has already been to Norman multiple times this season and says he plans to return at least once more for the weekend of the TCU game.

With OU having already locked up their 2016 and 2017 quarterbacks, their QB target/s in this 2018 seems to have become a point of focus for Riley. As of right now, Thompson seems to be the guy the OU coaches like the most but it’s still super early so only time will tell. – (Brandon)

– Chris Brown: ESPN’s Gerry Hamilton reported earlier Friday morning that the Sooners are under consideration for an official visit from 2016 DB Chris Brown (Houston, TX).

However as you can see from Hamilton’s tweet, Brown evidently have a previous commitment the weekend of Nov. 21st. Which is important because the Sooners only have two remaining home games with which to host official visitors. So unless OU is going to try and bring Brown in next weekend for the Iowa State game, if he does in fact take an official to Norman one would have to assume it would not come until after the regular season was completed.

Which isn’t necessarily the end of the world to be sure, but one of the significant advantages of hosting a prospect during a home game is the ability to utilize that atmosphere a game day provides. It is also probably worth reminding the numbers crunch OU is expected to be facing in terms of their 2016 DB class, so this may all prove to be a moot point if Brown waits to visit until after the season. – (TFB)

– Dre Massey: If you missed it earlier in the week, 2016 JUCO wide receiver Dre Massey tweeted out that he plans to be in Norman on the aforementioned weekend (Nov. 21) of the TCU game.

Given what we think we know about the remaining spots in this 2016 OU class, a JUCO receiver seems a bit curious in terms of a possible take. It’s believed the Sooners are looking for probably one more WR in this class, but that wasn’t necessarily expected to come from the junior college ranks. That said, however, any time you have the possibility of increasing your presence in the talent-rich Mississippi JUCO pool of talent it’s typically worth your while. – (TFB)

– Haskell Garrett: 2017 DL & OU offer, Haskell Garrett (Las Vegas, NV), tweeted out his list of current top schools Thursday night which included the Sooners.

https://twitter.com/HaskellGarrett/status/659877404375019520

Garrett plays at perennial Nevada h.s. powerhouse Bishop Gorman, which has been friendly to OU in the past sending the likes of Ryan Reynolds and DeMarco Murray to Norman in previous recruiting classes. Still a long way to go in this one for a 2017 prospect, but the Sooners do have a bit of an ‘in’ given their past ties to the program. – (TFB)

– UPDATE (Fri., 10:01 am): Sooners to back to the east coast for latest offer and one of the top 2017 DEs in the country.

– UPDATE (Fri., 11:41 am): Another east coast 2017 DE offer.

The Dre Massey thing seems even weirder when you watch his HUDL and he is playing halfback in what appears to be like a flexbone offense. Kid has speed and moves though.

You mentioned we have qb’s locked up in 2016 (Kendall) and 2017… Who is the qb we have for 2017?

I know, I just want it to collapse entirely. They’re nothing but a slick advertising campaign that dangles shiny objects in front of kids and then wastes their entire collegiate careers toiling in mediocrity. I can’t believe recruits still for for their cheesy sh*t.

A Friday open post what an amazing way to start the day. Glad Youngquist had a great time, looks like the LB’s are going to be one of the strengths of the defense for a while.

  • Boom says:

Massey, wonder if he’s the replacement for Daniel Brooks. Also, 2016 JUCO recruit and former 2014 East Carolina signee, Dre Massey has now reopened his growing recruiting process. Seems like Riley has a history with him.

    • Jofield says:

I think you are 100% right that he is more a replacement for Brooks than a WR. Plus, I love all the trick special teams plays he did.

    • Stephen Dale says:

OU is also looking at an Alabama HS WR with similarly reported speed….guess that tells us what we need to know about some of the receivers who have been on campus recently………

  • ellisbr says:

I clearly have an untrained eye but what I saw from Garret’s film, he was normally the last one to move at the snap of the ball…he finishes when he gets there though. guess I’m used to watching the likes of Striker and Bond hitting that edge before the Oline knows what happened. Maybe that sorta burst can be taught/learned with the proper training

  • SoonerfanTU says:

If some of these bigger receivers don’t start working out for OU, I hope we stop recruiting them. Just seems most of our better WR’s over the years have been on the smaller (or average) side.

Shep is listed at 5’11 I think.
    Broyles was listed at 5’11.
    Clayton was listed at 5’11.

Iglesias and Stills were a little bigger at 6’0 or 6’1. Savage was listed at 6’0.

Outside of Malcolm Kelly, we just haven’t had much luck yet outside the 5’11 to 6’1 range.

    • Indy_sooner says:

We have had a couple that just need to settle down. Mead and Dahu show alot of promise and the fact that they are dropping balls means that that are at least running the right routes

    • Brent says:

The past big receivers did not have proper player development coaches to help them succeed.

    • Kenny Stills says hello.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I mentioned him. And don’t consider him “big”, unless I have his height wrong.

I’m talking about the 6’3 and bigger kids.

    • Jofield says:

Its too early to write off guys that are freshmen and sophomores and prior to that I can’t thing of many big true WRs. Jaz Reynolds did not lack ability for sure. I can’t think of any other big guys.

    • Wilson says:

I wish Jameel Owens would have had this WR’s coach…

  • yungkobra says:

Dre Massey looks like a stud. His athleticism and speed jump off his film. He would be a nice gadget type player for the Sooner offense.

  • Scott says:

Thanks guys for the info. Just waiting for Juarez to commit.

  • hushnpa says:

saw the holder catch massey from behind on the blocked field goal attempt ..
if Massey really has 4.3 then that guy is Really fast and most
likely has the hands for receiver as well .. can we recruit him ?

  • Jofield says:

Massey has legitimate punting skills. I know Seibert is a great punter but just from the standpoint of trickery I can see Massey being our regular short-field punter just so that he can setup punt fakes.

Also, he is such a gadget type player that I don’t think he really has any bearing on our standing with other WRs. Its apples and oranges. I don’t know what Massey is but our opponents won’t either.

  • Maverick says:

Quick anecdote re: Casey Thompson. I am sometimes fortunate enough to watch practice, and I went to a few during the spring that Kendall was competing for the starting job. Charles and family including Casey were there each time I was. I can remember Gundy telling Casey to come field a few punts in pre-practice. Casey was out there in civilian clothes catching a few. I think he was a 7th grader at the time.

Gundy is such a good recruiter and coach. One of Stoops’ best hires if not the best.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

It’s pretty awesome OU has already gotten commitment from Youngquist and likely soon from Caleb Kelly, 2 of the top LBs from California. Stoops and Co are doing a great job recruiting Cali kids.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

I am just amazed if this happens. Way cool for the Sooners. But at the same time they have deserved it. The LB’s that OU has put out is just phenomial and legit. The list goes on and on.

    • Mike Reed says:

And i’m still holding out hope we can also get Mique Juarez out of Cali. Talk about a great Cali trifecta!!

      http://247sports.com/Player/Mique-Juarez-49705

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

I’d love that. He’s unlikely at this time but only consistent thing with 18 year Olds is they change their minds quickly

      • Ed Cotter says:

That would be the NEW Cali Trio!!

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Add in last years 5* DeBerry and all of a sudden OU has elite athletes at all 4 LB positions

        • Brien Brown says:

Elite in stars and critics eyes does not always translate to on field success, but with that said would be a legit crew I’d take Joyner or Smith over Juarez tho.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Can’t hurt with all the turmoil at USC starting the year #8 and free falling to 3 losses and losing their coach and maybe AD! And UCLA started at #13 but has 2 loses with games against #13 Utah and USC still to go. Not a lot of momentum in the Cali schools right now. Hope Kelly is bending his ear and maybe Youngquist as well! Might not help but it can’t hurt

        • Stephen Dale says:

be nice to find more Cali HS OL like Samia and get them to Oklahoma…..1 or 2 a year would be acceptable………….

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

        Step 1: Fire Kish
        Step 2: Hire Soonerfandave84

      • John Garner says:

LOL. Kish does the work and Stoops gets the credit. Poor guy can’t get a break.

        • Brien Brown says:

Stoops is the closer though, and like a good closer if he does his job secures the victory, Kish gets both love and hate, mostly hate but, can’t hate too much this year.

          • Rick says:

He has never really deserved any of the hate he received. The first year he was here, the scheme was changed to a 4-7 D that never really worked. That prompted a bad recruiting year to follow, which resulted in the idiots on some of the other boards yelling, “fire Kish”. Not his fault.

Only if we don’t get Kelly.

  • KJ1123 says:

I think Diesch was in Norman last weekend too.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

      Any idea how it went?

      • KJ1123 says:

It went ok I suppose, the usual. Had dinner with Coach B after the game, hung out with one of the players Sat night. He’s been to Norman before and knows OU wants him, so just have to wait and see now.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

Hey, what’s the vibe with the OL? Are they feeling like they are turning the corner? Is the confidence building?

      • KJ1123 says:

I think so, there’s more confidence in what they are doing as a unit. Still a few wrinkles to iron out, like communication along the line. But I think as a whole, the offense is more comfortable with how each other plays. The line is used to how Baker operates, the receivers, etc.

    • Brien Brown says:

This would make me happy if he came to OU really like this kid!

  • Boom says:

FYI – Anyone remember Dillon Jackson from Ringling OK. 6’6 skinny kid who we thought may be a TE or DE. Well, I remember and wish he would’ve come to OU but no scholly. OU asked him to walk on but he went to Memphis. I remember when he signed with Memphis thinking, why would he go to Memphis. Now I know. BTW, Jackson is their Dawg LB at 6’6 245. This is why I love Okie boys and wish him the best. I just wish Dillon was at OU.

    • Randy says:

Jackson Dillion would have been perfect for our 3-4 OLB spot..

      • Boom says:

Interesting, started 8 games his freshman year. Dad Richard played LB at OU from 84 – 88.

At Memphis: Two-year starter for the Tigers at the Dawg position, a hybrid defensive end/linebacker position in Memphis’ defensive scheme … Has played in all 25 games through first two seasons at Memphis, starting 20 contests … Over the last two years has accounted for 72 total tackles including 14.5 tackles for lost yardage (-63 yards) and 4.5 quarterback sacks (-34 yards)
Credited with three pass breakups, has forced two fumbles and blocked a pair of kicks.

    • Stephen Dale says:

evaluation skills of the staff are not as good as they would like the fans to believe….

  • Swanny says:

The Bishop Gorman staff used to come and help at the OU Summer camps. Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t they all coaching at UNLV though now?

    • John Garner says:

Most of them. The Gorman HC, Sanchez I think his names is, moved up and brought some of his HS staff with him.

      • Stephen Dale says:

most of the Gorman studs have been going to USC recently….they are not staying home in LV

        • Brien Brown says:

Thank you captain obvious! Those are top talent kids why in the BLUE HELL would they stay and play at UNLV, and doubt many more recruits will be going to USC no smart coach would go to that mess!

If we take KU seriously, this game could get ugly real quick. I seem to recall a game with TK at the helm, that they gave us a real scare because we played so poorly.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Blake Bell was leading the team in 2013 when OU was losing to KU

OU needs to come out fast and take their fight away with a quick 17 or 21 points

    • CS says:

very light schedule this week. The first thing I look at in a Sat schedule is OU times and channel, then Alabama’s opponent, in other words, Alabama’s possibility of losing is the second most thing I look forward to, no chance of that this week, unfortunately 😉

Like the Lawler kid. Listed 6’3 225 but plays bigger. Know they’re highlights but 1 guy couldn’t block him and fought through double teams and if not blocked ran the play down from the backside.

  • Fear The Magic says:

With Seth Russell out Baker Mayfield currently has the number 1 QB rating in the country.

I guess you can call that a good walkon.

    • KJ1123 says:

If all goes well, should be alot higher next couple of weeks.

    • soonerthunder says:

when I said he had the “it” factor over TK and CT at the beginning of the year b/f a starting QB was picked, I was excoriated; people brought up his play (TD/int ratio) at TT. I think I’m right as well in saying that TK will also look much better if he comes in to play in this O (I think CT has a ways to go but could get there). Fans like to be unforgiving of the past, and often the past has nothing to do with a developing QB. As I said before the season, if we look at the 1st couple of years of a guy’s play, Boykin would never be QB his jr & sr years.

      • Daddy R says:

Wasn’t Boykin a wr for his first two years?

        • Boom says:

No, he was the QB and they sucked and Boykin sucked so bad they put him at WR. Then the new OC’s came in and presto, new QB who should win the heisman.

        • soonerthunder says:

FR (’12) he was 167-292, 15 TD and 10 int
SO (’13) he 7 TDs and 7 int

      • Boom says:

Thank you as some just can’t get the past out of the way of the present. Different team every year.

        • soonerthunder says:

Exactly. As are players many times. Look at the secondary at both OU and OSU. They say its the 3rd year that the game slows down for a QB. TK is in a better system and he can get us in better plays now, IMO.

          • Boom says:

Last year we had a young QB TK and a backup who’s never played. Coaches never let TK lose for fear of injury. This year is almost an embarrassment of riches. 3 QBs who have all played and all are talented. TK is much better off in this system and anything happened to Mayfield, I don’t see a drop as some schemes may changes but overall we would keep feeding the monster.

          • soonerthunder says:

Heupel is a great O mind. He really, really knows football, maybe better than Riley. And, he is good at getting them coached up and ready, BUT, he is better for a pro team. He needs guys who have played QB for several years and who really understand defenses like he does (which a guy out of HS doesn’t) and who can make the pro completions and WRs who can make pro like decisions. This O is much better suited for college and HS and junior high passing teams. It’s easier for the QB to get the team in the right play. I think Heupel’s complicated O made it immensely difficult for TK and for the WRs to succeed.

It’s Game Day!!! I was sitting here watching the Sooner Playbook on SS.tv and they were discussing MVP’s up to this point for the O and D. It made me think about how much improvement the players have made this season. What a huge difference a couple of key position coaches (Cooks and Reynolds) have made with their coaching techniques and attitudes.
Anyway, I was curious who some of us would pick as our breakout players of the season up to this point? Offensively, how could you not pick Baker with the games he has had. But looking past his gaudy numbers, would it be Mixon or Andrews up to this point. I hope after today, Mixon will have a new nickname that sticks. (My favorite is from Sooner Playbook , Tim “The Toe” Lasher; Sir Mixon-A-Lot).
On Defense we have several guys that could easily get the award of breakout player. Parker, JT, Will Johnson, and after last week Austin. Shannon stepped in and had a great game. But if I had to pick a single guy up to this point, I would have to go with JT, because when he has been on the field he has been good and steady.

On offense I have to go with Baker. It’s been night and day having him. He is the straw that stirs the concoction. Defense, Striker leads the team in TFL and sacks and close to the top in overall tackles. He’s the guy teams have to gameplan for but Charles ‘Crush’ Walker is a close second and my defensive newcomer of the year as he is 2nd in those stats, which is salty for a lineman.

Happy Halloween Gameday my Sooner brethren. This shall be a scary day for the Jayhawks!! ? Boooooo…….mer!!!

Boomer! Just flipped on espn to watch gameday and Trevor was actually talking about Temple angling itself to get into playoffs. Lol. It’s too early for that level of bs. Temple. Lol.

    Good morning TFB Family.
Quick story: My family and I went on a camping trip with some friends. As you know, you have to watch out for critters. It was our first night; so, setting up is a beast. We drove into the local town for some fast food. When we returned, the raccoons had got into our friend’s cooler, took the pepperoni bread his wife had made. My buddy was pissed.

It’s been at least six years since that happened but I keep hearing about that bread. His wife can’t make enough pepperoni bread to replace what the raccoons took. All he can remember is what got away.

My point: the texsa game. I’m hoping our boys continue to play with attitude. I hope they remember that game as the one that got away. I hope they tell themselves, “yeah, we won today, but that texsa game….” These boys have been playing with attitude lately. Not just attitude, nasty attitude. Losing the texsa game is going to be the best thing that happened to this team and future OU teams for all of the players currently on the roster.

Awesome! Good way to teach about beat-downs. 🙂
      SOONER!!!

    • Daddy R says:

Enjoy! How old are the kids??

      • Chad says:

3 and 6. They are very very excited. Figured it was a good game to take them since the kids will demand some of my attention and this game will NOT be stressful! Lol. I’m pretty sure they will also have a lot of room to run around in the stands by half time too! ?

        • Daddy R says:

I sure hope so! They will have a blast! My two are 4 and 6 (both boys), but we live in Denver now, so I have not been able to get back to a game yet… I have taken them to some Avalanche and Nuggets games, but nothing compares to the Sooners. Have fun man!

How do you guys feel about these?

    Cincinnati (-1.5) over PITTSBURGH
    Minnesota (-0.5) over CHICAGO
NEW ORLEANS (-3.5) over NY Giants
    Green Bay (-2.5) over DENVER
    Tulsa (-3.5) over SMU

I’m a life long Packer fan, but betting against the home team dog on a national TV night game seems shaky to me.

I don’t know the Sunday night stats, but home team dogs on Monday night have something crazy like a 66% win rate vs the spread, I believe.

I’m back in the states. What happened with Texas? Never got to hear anything but that we lost. I told you they wanted to beat OU more than any team on their schedule. I have friends inside the UT program and they said the pressure to beat OU, if they don’t win any other game, was tremendous. they made a believer out of me. They practically practice on OU in everything they do all year round. All their basic practices are preparing for OU. They have in experts all year to get advice on OU. They have good athletes. Look at the results the last three years. In spite of the loss, I think we can still make it to the final 4. In fact, I’m not positive about this but pretty sure that if we were undefeated right now, I still think we’d hav
e to beat the last three teams to get in.

    • Boom says:

Good/bad scenario. Bad is we played poorly especially on the OL. Also, our game plan was weird, can’t really describe it.
Good – RT was replaced with Dru and SS Byrd has not played since opening the door to Will Johnson who has played great in the nickel. Parker went from nickel to SS and we’ve been tuff.
Game planning is night & day compared to UT. Much more energy and our practices have increased in intensity.

      • soonerthunder says:

You learn more from a loss than a win. Coaches are afraid to make changes if you are winning. The loss could wind up helping.

        • Boom says:

That loss as much as it stung and lingers lessens each Saturday when you see the changes, progress, & big wins.

  • Daddy R says:

Goooooooood morning Folks! Its a beautiful day for Football!

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

J.T. Barrett was arrested for OVI early this morning. This is an excellent opportunity for Coach Meyer to lay to rest all those accusations from UF by putting on the disciplinarian hat and suspending him for the first series against Minnesota.

    • Daddy R says:

Believe they announced he got the WHOLE GAME this time. One. Whole. Game. For driving while intoxicated (or, ah-hum, operating a vehicle while intoxicated), and I think this is his second time.

      • JJSoona says:

Well that should learn him good!! 🙂

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

In all fairness, he was suspended for two weeks, it just so happens they had a bye this week. That’s not Meyer’s fault. The schedule was made before he got there.

        • paganpink says:

ESPN is reporting that it’s not two games because it’s a misdemeanor. Which it always is unless it’s a second offense after a conviction or there was an accident involved, right?

  • JJSoona says:

Good morning fellow Sooner fans!! EAS TEX, this one’s for you 🙂 BOOMER!
