Open Post | Wednesday, Sept. 30th (UPDATE 3:40 pm)

OU/WVU Visitor List: In case you haven’t checked the link (here), we’ve added a few visitor names to the list since it first went up. Brandon has been able to confirm that OU’s 2016 QB commit, Austin Kendall, will be in town for a visit, which is obviously a good thing as it gives OU a guy (and commit) there this weekend to help recruit the other top targets also in attendance. – (TFB)

Jared Mayden: Talked to a source yesterday and was told that behind the scenes, Oklahoma and star 2016 CB and Oregon commit Jared Mayden (Sachse, TX) are still talking some. Mayden, as most of you probably recall, is son of former OU basketball player, James Mayden. However, (Jared) Mayden committed to Oregon this past summer.

Although with the Ducks struggling somewhat this season, I wanted to check and see if Mayden might start looking around a bit knowing the connection he naturally has with the Sooners. Not sure if anything will ultimately come of it, but it does sound as though the door hasn’t been completely shut quite yet. – (Super K)

First Come, First Serve: If you haven’t already peeped the visitor list, the Sooners are expected to be hosting three 2016 DB targets this weekend in Obi Eboh (Southlake, TX), Jordan Parker (Pittsburg, CA) and Brandon has confirmed that Louisville commit and son of former NFL CB, Ray Buchanan, Baylen Buchanan (Suwanee, GA) will be in Norman as well.

I’ve asked around and have been told that, at least as of right now, it is very likely a first come, first serve situation with respect to what looks to be one final CB spot in this 2016 class for OU. Now things are far from final and the numbers could still work out to allow a second DB prospect, but as it stands today the expectation remains taking just one more. – (Super K & Brandon)

Audie Omotosho and Camron Williams: Earlier this week Alex reported that OU had moved on from 2016 LB Marvin Terry. I spoke to a source close to OU offers and 2016 WRs Audie Omotosho (Plano, TX) & Camron Williams (Dallas, TX) and was told that OU is apparently no longer recruiting either of them as well.

The source speculated that OU may in fact be full at the wide receiver position. I cannot confirm that fact — the expectation has been there would be room for one more, but possibly only if it’s the right guy (Tyrie Cleveland for example) — and this was admittedly my source’s educated opinion, but at a minimum it would appear as though the Sooners have moved on from both Omotosho and Williams. – (Super K)

Moving on from 4-stars left and right!

  • Sooner 76 says:

Counting 2016 verbals and not counting on possible attrition, OU has 12 WRs scheduled to be on scholly for next fall. Is that full? Maybe, or do they have a silent commit?

Regarding DBs, OU has 17 DBs scheduled to be on scholly next season, with the same caveats as above. What I find interesting is that only 7 of those are safeties, whereas 10 are CBs. And–considering that OU plays a safety and not a CB at the nickel position–why is the last DB scholly going to a CB and not a safety?

Regarding LBers, who is playing ILBer next year? Is McGinnis an ILBer or an OLBer. All 3 of the verbs are considered to be OLBers, and so is the rumored silent commit Kelly. I think the confusion is that OU wants smaller players at ILBer, so they aren’t recruiting a lot of the bigger ILBers. But inquiring minds want to know who will play where.

    • Boom says:

Both Evans/Alexander will be back next year with Bolton/Tay Evans playing inside. McGinnis may have his had in the dirt or play that stand up DE.

      • Sooner 76 says:

Both Evans, Dom, and Bolton will return next year at ILBer. That’s 4.

At OLBer, DeBerry and Obo will return. DeBerry almost certainly will play Striker’s position and likely start.

Again, not sure where McGinnis fits, but doubt that he will play with his hand in the dirt, as they are overloaded at that position.

All 3 verbals are considered OLBers by Rivals.

        • Scott says:

          Obo plays DE now

          • Sooner 76 says:

I know, but considering 1) 2 guys redshirting at SDE, 2) 2 guys graduating at the standup position, and 3) Obo is too light for the SDE position, I think he will be moved back to the standup position.

      • Scott says:

JMT can play that stand up DE

    • Matt says:

both Kelly and Youngsquist look like ILB to me. ESPN has them listed at OLB in a 4-3 which is basically ILB in our scheme

      • Sooner 76 says:

I haven’t seen Kelly’s film, but I agree with you about Youngquist.

And, yes, the WLB in a 4-3 is the same as the WILBer (Dom’s position) in OU’s scheme. In fact, on my projected depth chart for next year, I have Youngquist in that position and McGinnis at SILBer (Jordan Evans’ position), with Jefferson and Terry at OLBer.

        • Matt says:

are the two LB positions really that different in OU’s scheme? It looks to me like Dom and Jordan have basically the same duties

          • Sooner 76 says:

Pretty much the same, yes. Usually, the heavier guy plays the strong side position and the faster guy the weakside position.

        • Daryl says:

What about Deberry and Tay Evans? I would suspect they win roles before Youngquist or McGinnis.

          • Sooner 76 says:

I said they were on my depth chart for next year. I didn’t say I had them starting. I said earlier that I expect DeBerry to start in Striker’s spot next year. I expect Jordan and Dom to be starters at ILBer next year, which is their senior years.

          • Daryl says:

Sorry totally misread your comment. My bad.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Not a problem. I should have been more clear.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

So we are taking only 2 WR’s this year and one is a JUCO? Hmmm

  • Dustin says:

    Burton a CB or S?

  • Will Narramore says:

Surprised they are shutting down WR recruiting considering 1 is a JUCO and 1 is a high school QB so you have no idea what his progression will be like.. Where are the rest of the scholarships going in this class? 1 CB 1 RB 2 LBs 3 OL?

  • KJ1123 says:

I wonder if Big Play Ray will be in Norman with his son this weekend.

  • hOUligan says:

This DB class is insanely sick already. Any 1 of those 3 visitors would be a great ‘last one in’. If Mayden has any thoughts at all of getting to OU, the clock is ticking, but gotta believe they take 2 more if someone like him wanted to commit.

  • Troyce Lewis says:

Any film on Baylen Buchannan or thoughts on his game?

  • Jeff says:

So OU will sign 12-15 more for 2016?

    • Sooner 76 says:

I expect a class of about 20. OU currently has 14 to give, with 10 verbals, and I assume attrition of about 6, which is probably a little conservative.

So I would say 10 more at least, with 12 more just as likely. 15 would be a stretch, but not impossible, b/c it would be mean attrition of 11.

  • guest says:

With Cody Thomas coming on strong as a strong and accurate passer, when is Trevor Knight going to realize an NFL future for him will only come as a WR? Shouldn’t he convert early rather than wait until his final season like his predecessor? Hasn’t he gained 20 lbs this year? I’m just sayin’.

    • Matt says:

Blatant Homerism still thinks Cody Thomas is going to overtake Mayfield at some point this season so if you listen to him, Baker may need to find an NFL position too

      • guest says:

Wow! I didn’t see that coming. …but Cody can’t scramble and who knows whether he is a “gamer” like Mayfield. I was just thinking with the need for fresh legs in this system, Trevor Knight would be a perfect candidate, and may be good for trick plays, too, not to mention any NFL aspirations. I guess if Mayfield wins a NC and the Heisman, he can declare early for the draft and Thomas can take the reigns next year.

        • Matt says:

No i’m sorry, I wasn’t being snarky to you, I was more making fun of BH. I think you make a valid point about Knight actually.

        • RBear says:

I’d mentioned some time ago that I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mayfield and Knight both on the field at some point for some LR trickeration.

And, shouldn’t Knight be the holder on XP’s and FG’s?

    • Zack says:

Why would knight convert to a position that he really has no future at either? Sure he could be an Edelman type of guy but he’s been fragile so why take more direct hits?

      • Boom says:

Knight knows he will go into broadcasting, not worried about NFL. Regarding fragile, I guess AD was fragile too.

        • Zack says:

True. With knight though his injury was pretty serious I bet a lot of guys would quit after that. I mean we’re seeing a handful of guys each year retire from the NFL because of the potential for dangerous blows to the head.

  • Matt says:

is this the year OU finally starts signing 5 stars again?

    • Zack says:

You mean 2 years ago mixon wasn’t a 5 star?

      • Matt says:

I mainly meant multiple 5 stars a year. I want to get back to the 05 and 06 classes! Which, with all the recruits on defense that are showing interest, it sounds like this year might get close to the 05 level. That class was so stacked with defensive talent it was crazy. 06 was better overall but not as deep defensively. Anyway, I’m just saying I want to get back to classes like those!

        • Zack says:

I figured you meant multiple 5 stars but I don’t see us landing more than 1 in kelly, but possibly 2 high 4 star DTs.

    • Better check our record with 5 stars. Not so good, at least at the skill positions. AD was the exception. I went all the way back to 2000 and none of them panned out to be near as good as advertised except AD. Again, this is on the skill positions. DL and OL actually did pretty well. Running backs left or were kicked off, WR’s didn’t pan out and DB’s were just average.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • Daryl says:

I am certain that this has already been addressed and I missed it but whatever happened to Frison?

  • RBear says:

Early in the season I know but has anyone heard anything about who, if anyone, might be shining on the scout team. I know we have quite a few highly-touted redshirts hanging around.

  • Stephen says:

Liked Audie, never really was a fan of Williams but it’s interesting that they would stop recruiting at WR. I’m pretty impressed with Ryan Parker but I don’t see how many could have confidence in Hardy as he plays QB and is expected to make an immediate transition to WR. Makes more sense to seek guy that competes at their position.

    • Boom says:

How many players do you want me to name came that came to OU only to play another position and become an AA.

      • Stephen says:

None, because you can name as many or more AA or Heisman winners that stayed at their position. I know there are many great players that have made the move and it worked out for the better but if you’re turning down 3* or 4* players for a guy that’s not rated at his position, it’s going to raise some questions.

        • Boom says:

Stephen, sometimes HS put the best athlete at QB so they can win. Hardy is one of those kids. At QB, he already knows the route tree, just a matter of running the routes and if he’s a talented athlete, then he will quickly learn.
Players are still growing when they get to college – Andrews. He’s now a TE and will be a better one than WR. Bodies change, positions change. Lineman will go from one side of the ball to the other. Brown, Williams just to name a couple.

          • Stephen says:

That’s a good point, just seems a bit risky when there’s still pretty good talent out there.

          • Boom says:

Every recruit is a risky proposition. Look at the guy from tOSU, he can play anywhere as he’s a talent. Played QB, now WR and I bet he could play CB too. We can only hope Hardy turns out to be this kind of talent. There are some WR’s in HS who have hit their ceilings whereas Hardy is raw and college coaches love that. Hell, there are studs going from basketball straight to TE their sr year in college and have long pro careers. Studs are studs.

          • Jofield says:

Lane was a QB before he was a DE/TE/OT

          • Sooner 76 says:

Bob offered DeMarco seeing him only play basketball.

          • Stephen says:

True and to he fair, Braxton Miller was a 5* recruit and ranked 30th nationally so I’m not expecting that kind of impact but I’ll take even just half of that talent.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Brandon Everage was a QB in HS, based on Rivals. Made a pretty good FS, I would say.

Yes, Jamaal Brown. Thatcher became an AA return man under Stoops.

But any time someone mentions Blake’s players, I always counter that none of it would have happened without the 2 JUCO leaders Heupel and T Marshall. Let John Blake explain how he would have won the 2000 NC with Patrick Fletcher at QB, no offense to Patrick.

          • Hartshorne Miner says:

Lane Johnson has to be near the top of all time for position transitions……QB to OT.

          • Boom says:

Brown from Lawton and Williams were both DT recruits then went to OT and became AA, Outland Trophy, & all pro’s.

      • j l says:

So kids switching positions and becoming an all american is the norm?

Anything is possible, but its a pretty big crapshoot when you are only taking 2 kids of a certain position.

        • Jofield says:

I think you guys are under estimating how common it is to take an athletic QB and convert. Even most big name schools have a half dozen guys that were QB’s in HS. Nobody worried about Dalton Wood being a QB.

          • j l says:

Thats because we had andrews and meier at TE, and a whole slew of guys at DE, in case wood didnt pan out. If he was a bust, not the end of the world.

If hardy were to bust, with only a JUCO WR also in the same class, it would set us back at least a year at the position. Its slightly worrisome.

          • Boom says:

case in point. Andrews was a WR, but his body continued to grow and that became his natural position.

          • j l says:

I think everyone pretty much assumed andrews was gonna be a TE. I know he wanted to be a WR, but you dont see them any taller than 6’6, and rarely over 6’5.

        • Boom says:

Wouldn’t say it’s the norm but if you are a good athlete and you keep growing, then sometimes you have to make the switch. HS ball doesn’t necessarily put the kids in their normal positions but rather a position that will help them win.

          • j l says:

I understand that, but its still a bit of a risk when the only other WR you have signed is a juco.

the WR corp would be VERY upperclassman heavy.

          • Boom says:

            Looks good to me.
Shepard, Sterling Sr. Neal, Durron Sr.

Baxter, Jarvis Jr. Westbrook, Dede Jr

Mead, Jeffery So. Quick, Michiah WR So. Smallwood, Jordan RSo.

Todd, Dallis RFr. Green, Dahu Fr. Humphrey, John Fr. Miller, A.D. Fr.

          • j l says:

Im talking about 2016/2017, not this season.

Humphrey is the only WR that we are redshirting this year, so for 2017, literally the only underclassman we will have is hardy, humphrey, and whoever we get in next years high school WR class.

We have had to rely much on JUCO WR lately, it creates holes in keeping your recruiting spaced out correctly.

Remember when charlie weis took a whole boatload of JUCO kids? Wonder why kansas is sitting with 60 kids on scholarship? He took too many JUCO kids.

    • Stephen Dale says:

OU may be counting on current redshirt walkon WR , Lee Morris, for 2016-18……He’s another of the Allen TX conection…………….. his development might explain why OU has dropped off Omatosho , Williams, & Salomon……

  • Zack says:

I’m shocked about the recruiting this week. They must feel confident with who they have left on the board because they lose 2 WR this year that played a ton of football here at ou and none of the young guys are making fans scream for more playing time except Andrews and mead but more so because of their potential.

    • Boom says:

Shep will be a loss but don’t think Neal will have the same impact. I guess they are counting on what they have.

      • Zack says:

Doesn’t Neal have the second most targets? I would say that’s more impact than people think.

        • Boom says:

I think it’s the position, not the player. They are all interchangeable in this offense regardless of the player. IMO

          • Zack says:

Then why not Westbrook, Baxter, quick or any of those interchangeable players?

          • Boom says:

I haven’t looked at the stats. However, the offense is new and Riley is ironing out the wrinkles. Neal may have more now but I don’t see he being the #2 guy. I say during the year there will be a #2 & #3 guy emerge over Neal. Just my opinion.

          • Zack says:

You’re probably right. Sometimes that 4th guy is an important part especially in an air raid. I don’t think he’s irreplaceable just that no one has stepped up yet and I’m not sure how we’ve struggled so much with WR lately.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I wish we can get the ball to Dede a little more. Where’s the end around?

          • Sooner 76 says:

All positions are not all interchangeable with the receivers. That would confuse the players. Some players play 2 positions, and in some formations that player lines up differently (2 on each side vs trips on one side and 1 on the other, but that’s about it. So far, I’ve seen no player play 3 positions.

The left WR is X (Westbrook), the left slot is H (also the Hback position) (Baxter), the right slot is Y (also the TE position) (Shep), and the right WR is the Z (Neal). When the Hback is in the game, Baxter will come out and when the TE is in the game, Shep either comes out or moves to the Z and Neal comes out. So when Andrews is in the game at Y, he usually lines up on the right either as TE or in the right slot.

          • Boom says:

76, to clarify, if you are the 2 position, and the 2nd string 2 comes in, it’s the same but different player. Since you’re playing 8 or so WR in a game, that is what I’m talking about.

          • Sooner 76 says:

So if you are the X (Westbrook) and Mead or Green comes in (2nd team X), then Westbrook either comes out or moves to the H and Baxter comes out.

Against Tennesse, for example, Westbrook and Green played X, Baxter and Westbrook played H (and were out when Flowers played HB), Shep, Andrews (both at slot at TE), and Knight (only as TE) played Y, and Neal and Miller played the Z.

So the targeted passes would be for the X, H, Y, and Z positions, not for a particular player. I think that is what you are saying.

      • Ed Cotter says:

DeDe may be gone as well as Shep and Neal…it’s possible

        • RBear says:

Possible yes, probable no IMO. Dede will have the lion’s share of the limelight so I think he’ll stay to improve his stock.

          • Ed Cotter says:

I sure hope so. He would be WR1 and that could really vault him into the upper rounds of the draft.

        • Sooner Ray says:

You just shut that dirty mouth Mr. Cotter! 🙂

        • Wade Durham says:

Ed Cotter, I am wondering if You might be related to Al Cotter. Al was my best friend. He lived in Sulphur, Ok and El Paso with his dad. He would be in his early 70’s. The last time I saw him was when I was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, Illinois. He then disappeared from the face of the earth. Sorry to ask this on a football board but, I surely would like to hook up with him after all these years. Thank You.
          .

          • Ed Cotter says:

Not sure Wade. My dad was born in Chickasha back in the early 40’s and has one brother. Other than meeting my grandfather one time in the early 70’s, no other contact with any other Cotters. I don’t know anything about my Grandfather’s relatives other than Jayne and Audrey Meadows, Audrey was Alice Kramden on the Honeymooners, were his cousins. Sorry. Hope you do get to reconnect with him.

    • Jason Vos says:

AD Miller Hess looked good even though he hasn’t made a lot of catches, but he has played quite a bit

      • Zack says:

I know they like miller but for him to jump quick and Todd for marginal playing time, tells me that we have a couple possible misses riding the bench.
I will be interested to see if Smallwood can come back 100% for ou/texas because I think he will play a lot and bring a physicality that no receiver currently brings outside of shep.

        • Jason Vos says:

He hasn’t jumped Quick. Matter of fact, Quick played a lot vs Tulsa. They play different positions

          • Jofield says:

Also, I think the deal with Quick has more to do with effort/character than ability. We know from late last year that he has ability. He was our leading receiver after Shep got hurt (for whatever that’s worth).

    • Scott says:

Hopefully we get Tyrie Cleveland and Darnell Salomon

  • Jason Vos says:

Maybe Stanvon Taylor will make the switch 🙂

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Julio Jones would look good in a Sooner uni. Has that ship sailed?

  • JrsySooner says:

Oh good grief you can never have enough wide recevers…get rid of someone . ..like that seibert guy he’s taking up two ships right…then we let some walk on have a ship…Baxter somebody then Mayfield gets a ship has he earned it …man this staff is pissing me off

    • Borba22 says:

I get the sense you’re either a troll, a very bad sarcastic poster, or an idiot. Possibly all the above.

  • Borba22 says:

SIAP but FWIW, Baylen Buchannon is being recruited as a WR, not a CB, so he doesn’t apply to the First come, first serve deal.

  • RBear says:

Just had this very lucid moment where I envisioned the middle of the field being wide open all day vs wv- Mixon and Andrews ran wild with RAC and the wv D rankings took a substantial dive.

    • Borba22 says:

      I like it

    • SamSooner says:

Keep dreaming, sir. Keep dreaming. You have complete control.

      How are you today, RBear?

      • RBear says:

Doing OK Sam, thanks- and you?

Just doing a little postulatin’ on this here up-comin’ game ‘gainst them thar hill people.

I think we’ve got them right where we want them 😉

        • SamSooner says:

I’m doing good, sir. Family all healthy and happy.

Once again, I’m not worried about this week’s opponent. The OL is looking better each week. Shore up some things and OU will move the ball at will.

I don’t think the mountaineers will face a DL that pushes the pocket like OU.

          • RBear says:

Agreed, this could be the week where the LR HUNH makes it’s debut- may not run it all game but if we could come out in it and smack-em around the first few possessions, I’d be a happy man.

          • SamSooner says:

I don’t think we’ve seen any of what LR can do in this offense. There tons of reasons to be optimistic about the future of this team. When I watch the OL, they seem to be gelling and all of them seem to be getting comfortable.

          • RBear says:

And, what we have waiting in the wings for their turn. I asked earlier if anyone knew how the scout team was looking and if anyone was standing out-?

Excited for the future but loving the present, too.

          • RBear says:

            like Magellan

    • William Ryan says:

Listening to Teddy Lehman talk about this today. On film he seems to think we will expose their d, especially their front 7. While Joseph might be talented I like our skill guys top to bottom over their dbs.

      • RBear says:

wv has yet to face anyone with our size/skills- it’ll take them a while to adjust if they’re even able. Another reason to jump out on them early and often.

While 3-3-5 allows you to get your best athletes on the field… it puts so much pressure on your front 3 and we know all what happened last year… just keep hammering em with Optimus and would love to see the wildcat on full display.

Awesome news about Phillips getting an offer. Only about 20 minutes down the road, so gonna have to catch some of his games….wearing my OU gear!

  • Ed Cotter says:

This time tomorrow I will be on my way to Norman from So. Cal. BOOMER! OU is honoring the 85 National Champs and Boz is getting a College HOF Plaque at halftime.

    • KJ1123 says:

      Safe travels! Have Fun!

    • lovethemsooners says:

Have a good time Ed. Would love to come and hang out with you this year, but look forward to Ohio State next year instead. Safe travels brother.

      • Ed Cotter says:

Yup, Ohio State is happening. Gonna try to lock down rooms this weekend for next year. My brother definitely wants to go and hoping to bring his wife, an Ohio State alum, to the game as well. She will know all the great spots to check out for the 2017 game in Columbus. Bummed not getting to hang with your for the second straight year, but we’ll make up for it next year bud.

        • SamSooner says:

I live in Ohio. I will be at both games. I can tell you where to hang out and where to park.

          • Ed Cotter says:

Thanks Sam. That is going to be one heck of a game the next couple of years. It’s not a stretch for both teams to be Top 5 in either of those years when they meet up.

          • SamSooner says:

No problem. We have to at least split the wins because I will be toast if they lose both games.

          • SamSooner says:

Exiled and I plan of meeting up for the game in Columbus.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

Are there any motels within walking distance to the stadium?

          • SamSooner says:

Those are pricey. But you can get a hotel within two miles. The hotel I recommend is the Columbus Hyatt Place OSU. It’s on Yard St., near Olentangy River Road (ORR). It’s within a mile or two of the campus.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

            Noted. Thank you!

        • William Ryan says:

Crazy to think we are playing the reigning National Champs next year and it’s awesome and shows that we set the standard in this conference… makes the rest of our conference look like a joke as far as non-conference scheduling. This game will be monumental to say the least! just like when Florida st, Miami, Alabama came to town…. can’t wait to see the visitor list for this one!

          • JB says:

Good point about the scheduling. You’d think others would be shamed into scheduling better games, but Baylor, oSu & KSU have as embarrassing a non-conference conference schedule as any SEC team.
