Tre Brown: One in-state prospect fans hoped would receive an offer this past weekend and did is Tulsa Union’s Tre Brown. The 2017 CB made it Norman with friend and Sooner commit, Levi Draper (who has become quite the recruiter for Oklahoma, by the way).

Brown spoke glowingly of the trip and while a commitment didn’t happen, it remains a possibility one could happen soon. Brown told TFB he will take a trip to Stillwater today to check out Oklahoma State, after which he will sit down and think through things. Brown is mature as it relates to the recruiting process, “I don’t want to have a recruitment process where I’m talking to a bunch of schools and considering a bunch of schools. I want it to be manageable so I’m just focusing on four or five schools.” But Brown admitted that between Draper and his friendship with a guy like Steven Parker, he has the most connections with OU.

Brown went on to say, “I talked to coach Cooks and he said that if this (OU) is where I want to be then to go ahead and come on in and help them build the class. That’s something they’re really emphasizing.”

This was something I touched on in a recent post saying in part:

Build a foundation. Typically recruiting kids in a certain area (Texas or Oklahoma for example) ensures they know each other, and a lot of the time they can be your best ally in recruiting one another. The see each other at camps, games, etc. and end up building a strong foundation with each other that is sometimes harder for them to walk away from, perhaps even proving to be more important than the relationship they have with a school and/or coach. Additionally, they can band together and collectively recruit other guys.

That doesn’t mean OU should back off recruiting nationally — as far as I’m concerned they got a STEAL out of D.C. in Parnell Motley — but they need to continue to work to make sure there is a foundation of committed recruits who help the coaches recruit other kids. In this 2017 class, OU already has a couple guys like that in Levi Draper and Robert Barnes.

The Sooners are certainly working towards building a core group of guys in this region that may end up being their best recruiting asset. And I personally think it’s a very intelligent approach. – (Super K)

Edward Ingram: 2017 OG Edward Ingram (Desoto, TX) was another one of several prospect to make the trip to Norman this past weekend. And while we haven’t had a chance to catch up with Ingram just yet, I did speak with someone close to Ingram who indicated the trip went really well for both Ingram and his teammate, 2017 wide receiver Laviska Shenault (we still believe an offer could be coming for Shenault).

I just wanted to note that Ingram is expected to take a trip to Alabama in a couple weeks. It also won’t surprise me if he visits Texas, as they offered Ingram on Sunday.

Ingram is a man child…built like a 3-tech and can absolutely run. Kudos to Bill Bedenbaugh for getting in on him early. – (Super K)

Isaiah Thomas: 2017 OLB/DE Isaiah Thomas (Tulsa, OK) was another in-state guy who picked up an Oklahoma offer this past weekend. I spoke with Thomas last night and for him this was apparently his first visit to any school. As many of you know, Bob Stoops was not in town over the weekend so Thomas spent most of his time with Mike Stoops, who made the actual offer to Thomas.

Thomas said he really liked his time with the Oklahoma defensive coordinator. “He’s a cool guy. I could see myself playing for him. He wants me to play that Jack position.”

While the trip went well, it doesn’t sound like Thomas is in any hurry to make a decision. Thomas said he will visit Oklahoma State later this spring and then arrange some additional visits.  – (Super K)

JK Dobbins: Sooners are likely looking to fill two spots at the running back position in their 2017 class, and the name at the top of the OU coaches wish list right now is La Grange’s (TX) JK Dobbins. I caught up with Dobbins last night and it sounded like his visit to Norman this past weekend couldn’t have gone any better. Long after most of the other prospects had left, Dobbins and his family were still on the OU campus with running backs coach Jay Boulware and offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

Dobbins told me they stayed in Boulware’s office until around 9 pm going over everything. Dobbins added, “Tyrese Robinson and Levi Draper were getting at me to commit while I was there. I love those guys.” Although a commitment did not happen, Dobbins says his relationship with Boulware might be the best of all the coaches that are recruiting him. Dobbins said, “we DM on Twitter everyday and I call him once a week and he will call me once a week, so we talk everyday, pretty much.”

The staff is making Dobbins well aware, as are several of OU’s current commits, that he is the guy they want to join them in this 2017 class. Dobbins says he plans on taking more visits to other schools, but a return trip to Norman for the OU spring game is good possibility. All in all, the Sooners put on a good show for one of the top running backs in the country. – (Brandon)

More on Dobbins: Just wanted to add a follow up note on Dobbins since I cover him on the Texas side of things. I talked to a source close to Dobbins and was told that while he may wind up taking some additional visits, this one is going to be an OU/Texas battle. – (Andrew King)

Nick Robinson: Another OK Preps player in town this past weekend was 2017 Putnam City West DE/WR, Nick Robinson. I spoke to Robinson briefly about his recruitment in general following the visit. We didn’t really discuss the OU trip, one in which he came away without an offer from the Sooners, but I just wanted to note this is a guy I think OU should seriously consider offering.

Beyond all the great things we’ve heard about the young man (which is a huge part of any evaluation), Robinson is just a phenomenal and fluid athlete with great size and frame. For a big guy he runs as well as any of the other big athletes in the Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas area. – (Super K)

  • NM Sooner says:

    1st!

  • Malicong says:

Levi Draper might end up being one of the most important recruits in recent memory. Outside of being a stud, with all the in-state talent the next couple of years it is important to have the local guys so vocal and active in process.

  • C.A. says:

Great post I was ecstatic about the Tre Brown offer, kid has the speed we need to compete nationally. You can coach everything but speed. I also hope we close on the Dobbins kid. He’s absolute monster first thing you notice in his highlights is he runs so hard but controlled.

  • Birddawg says:

RB and DB need to be huge for this class.
Its obvious Perine and Mixon are going to the NFL.
A.Thomas graduates one safety position open.
If Parker and J.Thomas have another great season.. They’re gone too.
This is the class Cooks and Boulware earn their paychecks.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I wouldn’t say “obvious”. I think you can expect Perine to go. It’s not obvious that Mixon is leaving.

      • Tony B says:

I think Mixon would be smart to stay a year after Perine to improve his draft stock as a feature back (I’m sure Anderson or others would compliment).

        • SoonerinLondon says:

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Joe feels the same way.

        • Birddawg says:

I would be telling my RBs to get your degree and get to the NFL asap.
          RBs have a short “play-life”
After your rookie contract most of them are 26-27 years old and by then you want to get your BIG deal for 3 or 4 years your at the dreaded 30 yr mark.
Unless your a freak alien like AD it doesn’t matter but 30 yr old is a the downhill in a hurry.

          • Framoka says:

My thoughts exactly. Perine is awesome and quite the specimen, but he’s getting the s**t beat out of him and the corresponding injuries.

          • ccmosaic says:

That is also why a degree is so important. Perine is the kind of kid that will play in the league for a few years and then will become even wealthier after the league.

      • Ed Cotter says:

I am pretty sure the degree is very important to Perine, so unless he can get it done in three years, we should see him again as a SR. JMO.

    • Jake says:

There’s been a surprising amount of talk ever since Perine stepped on campus that he would spend all 4 years at Oklahoma & collect his degree. Would honestly be surprised if he left early.

      • Zack says:

Could graduate in 3 years though. Not sure how close he is but he’s a guy who should go.

        • Jake says:

Yeah, I’m not saying he couldn’t. From my understanding, he and his family wanted him to be here for 4 years. But, of course a lot changes from your freshman year.

      • Spitting Bull says:

I agree with you Jake. He’s a high character humble guy who thinks things through. If he’s not projected top 10 I bet he comes back for his Senior year.

        • Jake says:

He’s one of the most unique kids I’ve seen at OU. Given the fact that he’s an absolute STAR and so humble that you hardly hear anything about him. How does a guy of his stature fly so far under the radar- because he’s intentional about being “one of the guys”, rather than THE guy. We’re lucky to have him!

    • Spitting Bull says:

I could be wrong but Perine doesn’t seem like someone who will leave early. Unless he just has a mega monster year this year I think he’ll want to get his degree and improve his stock.

    • Brien Brown says:

I concur with the statements below that it has seemed since day one that Perine is more focused on his degree and graduating and all. Mean anything could happen but I see him at OU for 4 years just IMO!

  • Brian says:

Great stuff guys! Robinson and Robison are doing their part as well in the recruitment game

    #SoonerSquad17

  • Boom says:

Tre Brown – does he have good hands? If he has 4.3 speed it would be fun to watch him out of the backfield or slot and use his speed. Also, it’s always nice to have this speed in playing CB too so either is fine.

  • Boom says:

K, what position do you see Nick Robinson playing at OU.

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Nice to see TFB is on the Nick Robinson train. I posted with great fanfare here on Saturday Nick is in my Top 5 in-state prospects. At 6’4″ 215lbs , he has tremendous ball skills due his basketball development and a frame to make that OLB jump. Robinson high points catches naturally as a WR/TE, but get him in a S&C program and his athleticism will open eyes at OLB. He plays with his hand in the dirt at DE in a 4-3, but it would be nice to see him at OLB too. Nick is a 4.7 prospect with a stout first step, which should be hampered at 240lbs. And, sure he could naturally play in a Mark Andrews role.

Levi Draper LB – OU Commit (OU, Bama, FSU, OU, Clemson, etc.)
Justin Broiles DB – (OU, Neb, Ole Miss, Ark)
Isaiah Thomas DE/OLB – (OU, Tenn, Mizzou)
Tre Brown CB/ATH – (OU, Neb, ASU, SCarolina)
    Nick Robinson ATH
    Deontre Thomas DT/DE

It’s a luxury to have in-state talents like Draper, Thomas and Robinson.

These comments… (“Thomas said he really liked his time with the Oklahoma defensive coordinator. “He’s a cool guy. I could see myself playing for him. He wants me to play that Jack position.” ) …show Mike Stoops is committed to the 3-4 and he’s recruiting Jacks/Spinners types.

So, a 3-4 DL coach is in our future? That remains to be seen.

    • Mizuno45 says:

Perhaps more of a need at WR from Robinson, no?

      • PlayLikeaChampion says:

If OU gets away from the dink and dunk small guys on both inside receiver spots at the same time, then guys like Robinson and Andrews on either inside spot would be big body types over the middle to move the chains or downfield blocking on a LB. Andrews and Cale will force Riley’s hand in 2016 to change any paradigms he may have inside.

Nick Robinson is just a stout ATH.

  • Will Narramore says:

How many corners and safeties do you think we take this class? I’m thinking 3 corners 1 safety

  • Mizuno45 says:

Who else are we targeting at RB for 2017? Our team sell aside, UT recruits will be doing the same thing, so the border battle means one thing, 50-50.

    • Scott says:

Najee Harris , Dylan Moses ( ATH ) , I believe another highly ranked kid from the east coast.

      • soonerguy421 says:

We have no chance at Harris or Moses

        • Spitting Bull says:

          Thanks Stephen Dale….no offense, just couldn’t resist……………….

          • j l says:

hes being honest lol. Bama hasnt taken a true game breaking back in a few years, and harris is almost as highly ranked as fournette was. We arent flipping him.

          • Brien Brown says:

Butttt they got the Jacobs kid from Tulsa, I thought he was their next big great RB, buttttttt! Lol!!!

          • j l says:

right lol. Most of the bama fans ive seen only say they took 1 RB this class, dont think they even realize they got jacobs.

          • soonerguy421 says:

haha sorry, I just think those are two of the recruits we have the lowest possibility of landing in this entire recruiting class….

          • Brien Brown says:

Is it just because Moses is like the #1 prospect overall that you feel this way lol! Mean anything can happen and if he feels hit can fi our team and scheme he would consider us. We have a fighting chance at any kid I think!

        • Jpsooner23 says:

This is true. Not SD here and not saying we cant pull top talent, but these 2 are pretty well locked in with Bama/LSU

          • Scott says:

The guy from the east coast ( forget his name ) is a top 5 RB as well and he really likes OU , Najee has ties with Joe Mixon so don’t count him out.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

I will give you the old, “I hope I am wrong” sentiment, but I really do mean it. I do hope that’s the case.

    • hOUligan says:

Hope OU is honing in on several backs and not putting too much emphasis on Dobbins. Let the prospect know he is ‘A’ top RB target and you’re only taking a couple.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Oklahoma Drill match-ups I want to see:

    1. Kelly, Gallimore vs. Samia, Mixon (Cali, Can vs. Cali, Cali)
    2. Parker, Campbell vs. C. Knight, Westbrook (Just because)
    3. McGinnis, Walker vs. Zeus, Perine (Big vs. Big)
    4. Obo, Overton vs. Alvarez, Anderson (Next men up)

    Whatch’all got, hm?

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

      1.B. Stoops/Bedenbaugh vs. M. Stoops/Kish

        Tiffany Byrd vs Schmitty

        • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Hey. I’ve been around CrossFit enough to know you never underestimate a fit chick.

True story: Had a one-month trial. Attended three classes a week. 10 participants. 2 of us dudes. I was the last to complete the workout every. Single. Time. (And usually puking.)

          • Fear The Magic says:

I wasnt underestimating Tiff. My guess is they line up and she throws a banana/ strawberry smoothie in his face thus distracting him as she gives him the chop block from hell.

          • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

            Solid strategy, Cotton. 🙂

          • RocketCitySooner says:

Another true story. Back in the days of yore, the Gammi Phi’s played the Pi Beta Phi’s every spring in a charity football game in Owen Stadium. Pretty big deal, maybe 2000 would show up. The two teams would pick their coaches off the OU varsity. Several of us were having a few beers with a couple of Goofies, when one said let me show you how Lance Rentzel showed me how to block. Sure, says I. What’s a chick going to do to a big, football savvy guy like me?

She lined up about 15 yards away and come on at a dead run. About five yards out (I’d had several beers), I suddenly, but way too late, realized she’d been paying attention. She flashed past me planting an elbow right in the stomach. Damn, that hurt.

So, then the chic says, let me show you how Carl (McAdams) showed me how to tackle. That turned out much better as I had sobered up considerably.

          • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

LOL! A fun story, RCS. And you tell it well.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

Actually, I would up dating that girl for a couple of months. She played wingback for the Goofies. She threw the pass for the only touchdown they scored.

    • Slim Sooner says:

Good ones. I like these. How about Lampkin vs Orlando. Someone could sneak tweet it!

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Forgot about Lampkin. I’d like to see him against the JUCO OGs we brought in. I’m a big fan of Zeus’ game. Not quite sure who could out-nasty him. Line ’em all up!

    • DrewChubbs says:

I don’t even want to see Perine take a chance with all that beef falling on him. To me, he’s already proven everything he needs to. That being said, the idea of that matchup is awesome!

    • Bob Edwards says:

Smaje Perine vs Chuck Norris. Nah, better not might the released energy might end up being called Big Bang II.

  • Eddie and Amber says:

Levi Draper just moved into my number one spot for incoming recruits.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

With offers from Alabama, FSU, Clemson and OU, he’s the real deal.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

And I think he got the Alabama offer at a camp BEFORE his Junior season. Imagine that. Mind blown.

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Too bad we’ll only see him for a season. The U.S. Department of Health will ban him and the DoD will conscript him. He’ll achieve world peace and a national championship with a 1-0 record (because everyone–yes, everyone–will forfeit before risking a hit from that guy).

  • Dick Bump says:

Sounds like it was a good weekend from a football standpoint. Great stuff! Thanks for doing it.

  • rphokc says:

at least publicly, really quiet on the dline coach front, not even a leak

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I bet we hear some leaks later today after the coaches meet to discuss the candidates.

    • Jordan Esco says:

true, although TFB told you today & tomorrow was when the coaches were expected to meet about it. and w/ Bob not in town this past weekend, not all that surprised it’s been as quiet on this front as it has been.

      • Slim Sooner says:

Saw last night on news9 sports blitz they showed a graphic of Thibadoux as a candidate for the job. Of course it was Deano and he didn’t give it a percentage, so….

      • rphokc says:

        forgot, thxs for the reminder

  • turn2 says:

By the way, Nick Robinson is from Putnam City West. Not usually that guy, but I am a PC West Alum….

  • DCinAZ says:

Love the new recruiting philosophy getting commits engaged. Saw on twitter that Draper is using a #SoonerSquad17 theme along with the other commits to engage prospects. Damn I’m glad we brought Draper home!

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Is it too soon to order my Draper Sooners jersey? For my son, of course. Not for me. I mean, pfft. Why would a middle-aged man be wearing a Sooners jersey for a kid who still has yet to play his senior year of high school? What, you think I’ve got this kid’s likeness tattooed on my chest with the words “Butkus 2018, 2019, 2020” in gangsta-script around my belly button? Don’t be ridiculous, DCinAZ. Seriously. You know me better than that. 🙂

    • Stephen Dale says:

any update on Max tupai ? His name doesn’t appear on either the UCLA or Utah lists at this time …….

  • Kody K. says:

I just love how TX offers Edward Ingram directly after his OU trip. A good ploy to try to deviate his focus from the trip he just took to Norman. Strong knows how to play the game of recruiting.

    • RBear says:

      satanic

    • Mizuno45 says:

Strong also knows how to avoid wins with pretty darn good talent already on the roster, good luck to him with saving his job this year

      • Kody K. says:

His defense is getting close to a typical Charlie Strong D. I just hope Gilbert, the new OC, doesn’t iron things out on offense. Which is going to be a tough job when looking at the current QB situation. I think it will take at least two years to get that offense turned around. We were lucky we had Baker fall in our lap.

        • DCinAZ says:

I expect them to start Buechele right away. Don’t see anybody else on their roster who could even attempt to run that offense.

          • Kody K. says:

I agree, especially considering Shane was an early enrollment. I’ve heard Kai Locksley is improving, but I just don’t see him starting.

          • DCinAZ says:

Me neither. If Buechele lives up to his billing, he should walk away with the starting job next year. Supposed to be the most accurate QB they’ve ever had there according to the hype.

          • Kody K. says:

I think he is the real deal. After he gets experience……watch out!

        • Mizuno45 says:

They’ll improve with Gilbert, but not sure what expectations have to be met for Strong to save his bacon. Especially considering the new leadership and AD, I’m sure he’s definitely in a fish bowl now more than ever.

        • J J says:

2 years is a reach. They gonna rely on a true freshman?!?!

          • Kody K. says:

Buechele will be a redshirt Fr. or true So. in two years. 2 years might be a reach but then again look what we did in one year. Look at what Bob Stoops did in his second year with a JUCO QB.

          • J J says:

You sure? Think Burchele was an early enrolling in this last class…

      • soonerbred4ever says:

I wish him nothing but bad luck in recruiting and on the field! Texsa sucks!

      • rphokc says:

        ……..

  • jonnyBgood says:

Draper does an amazing job sifting through the “the trash”. Kids special.

  • Doobie74OU says:

If we can get a couple more Oklahoma and texas kids committed early and have them start recruiting for us this class will be crazy good! It is off to a great start and seems like we have a couple vocal recruits in the mold of Mixon and Sylvie the past couple years. Starting this early and following it up with another great year on the field should get us right back where we need & should be recruiting wise!

  • Kody K. says:

Would be awesome if we get both Brown and Broiles to commit. Getting both corners out of Oklahoma would be kind of special.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Nick Robinson is a better ATH imho.

      • Brian says:

I bet Robinson gets an OU offer eventually. Like Farrar in the last class, they might want to see his athleticism get more refined.

      • Brien Brown says:

I think you are correct with him being a good athlete but, a better one may be a question mark. OU has proven time and time again they know when to pull the trigger on a kid.

    • Doobie74OU says:

If nothing else, at least you can get in a great round of golf on the recruiting trip!

  • Randy says:

Love the Daley offer.. More, no go to Virginia, NC and find some more. Obviously recruit OK and Texas, CA but go find these kids that fit.

  • Martin says:

Is it fair to say that the LSU commitment by the other top LA RB over the weekend helps OU’s push with Dobbins? I mean LSU has RBs falling in their laps every day, but OU targets their top offers. I agree with pushing for an early commitment (like Perine’s) – it sets up a huge year in landing top WRs in TX too. Hopefully, they can land at least one national TE.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Why? What does J.K. Dobbins have to do with LSU? Dobbin’s from La Grange TX. It looks like an OU 47% vs Texas 53% battle for Dobbins.

Maybe you are confusing Dobbins with Bruce Jordan-Swilling or Tre Coleman, both from Louisiana. OU hasn’t offered Trey Coleman it appears. Bruce is looking hard a Alabama it appears.

      • Brian says:

I think Martin was just saying do we focus/push all the more for Dobbins now?

        • PlayLikeaChampion says:

J.K. Dobbins has been #1 on OU’s chart all along. Believe it or not LSU and OU were the only two top teams to offer 3 Star 2017 RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Now, that may change soon. Who knows?

      • Doobie74OU says:

Might be confused with Clyde Edwards-Helaire who is from LSU and OU offered last week. Initially he said he was locked into playing locally but then committed to LSU like 3 days later.

      • soonerguy421 says:

Dobbins is supposed to visit LSU on January 27th

    • Wade Durham says:

Did anyone read the story about the Gov of lousyana saying the state had such a big deficit that unless taxes are increased there won’t be any money to fund the state university’s sports programs. So, LSU might not play ball next year?

  • hOUligan says:

Like seeing OU staff working to get that ‘core’ K spoke of who will help recruit. Espec love that ‘the core’ is currently ‘local’ kids. Hoping some of these kids will take early looks at other schools and then commit ‘early’ to keep that momentum.

    • TSFFKAG says:

The “Local Core” means from the northern edge of KC to the southern edge of D/FW.

      • hOUligan says:

Agree ‘local’ for recruiting purposes extends beyond the OK borders to Tx, Ks and even Arky. Culturally similar and ‘know’ the OU brand and ‘what a Sooner is’.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

#3 in both AP and Coaches. KU #2 in both.

      • Brian says:

When two of your four losses are close games to the #1/#2 team in the country, you kinda get a pass on those…And we beat the other #1/#2 handily

  • Stephen Dale says:

if its Tx /OU battle fo Dobbins, OU might want to start looking for other targets…

  • SquidGiant says:

If the Big 12 really wants to add Cincinnati, I hope an added stipulation is to fire Tuberville. I can’t stand that guy even though I do give him partial credit for screwing up Texas Tech’s program.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

TCU entering the Big12 screwed up TTech’s success. That along with TTech not hiring Art Briles back in the day.

      • SquidGiant says:

So you don’t think firing their most successful coach was a contributing factor…

      • Stephen Woods says:

Leach locking the kid in the mechanical closet hurt their success..

        • TSFFKAG says:

the kid was a spoiled brat but we live in a politically correct age and he probably should have been disciplined in another way.

          • Stephen Woods says:

I agree I’m not much of a fan of the PC movement. However he could have handled that situation much better. That whole incident really pushed away parents of nearby recruits.

        • SquidGiant says:

To clarify, my real knock on Tuberville involves not being able to sustain Leach’s success. However, being aware of the circumstances surrounding Leach’s firing and also capable of examining the situation in the proper context it is clear to me that there is more to the story than Adam James or the University would be willing to admit.

      • RBear says:

lack of tradition screwed up their success and will continue to do so

    • TSFFKAG says:

First kick out UT, then add Arkansas, New Mexico and New Mexico State.

    • j l says:

I really hope they dont add a team that has half the ticket sales revenue that ISU and KSU do.
Not to mention only a 40k stadium, and that 45% of their sports revenue is from subsidies.

      Completely worthless add IMO.

      • SquidGiant says:

I don’t think there are any teams with athletic programs like OU wants, that compete in a wide range of sports. I also think the Big 12’s biggest problem is that the most popular sports network in the world is constantly telling recruits that, “the SEC is where they play “real” college football,” not the level of completion in the conference. It’s probably a coincidence that they have a broadcasting deal.

        • j l says:

I dont disagree with you, frankly I dont think there are any good adds that would realistically make the move to the big 12.

Not sure that I agree with Danley being on the list. I guess if ford is ahead of him on the list then I would understand. I think I would have Wade and Johnson higher. And quick is a guy who can leap up the list but right now that’s about right.

No updates after a weekend with all those recruits. Sigh…bored!
